March 2024 Wk 1 & 2

Ongoing Series - Thai

Cherry Magic (Sat YouTube grey) ep 12 fin - Unfortunately, there was singing. But what can we do?

A soft charming warm hug of a show about crushes and mind reading and self worth, with no-fuss execution from a consummate team and an OG lead pair proving why they remain eternal and deserve to grow up. Look, here’s the thing, Cherry Magic is a great Thai BL in its own right not comparing it to any other iteration. But even when I do compare (and I've seen all the Cherries and read the manga) it still stands. This is a great show, a solid adaptation, and a pleasing take on the original yaoi. I personally like it better than the Japanese live action, but I think that’s because I just really like Thai BL and I LOVE TayNew. I doubted them for this and I shouldn’t have. They did a great job, as did the sides. I will say all the kissing was both present and better than any other iteration. As it should be. Definitely one for the rewatch rotation. 9/10 

Deep Night (Thurs iQiyi) ep 1 of 8 (10?) - Damn it, I love it. And I don't want to. It’s more classic BL than I thought it would be, and far less Only Friends or Playboyy. (Thank fuck.) We got a big cast and a lot of tropes going down out the gate, including SMITTEN popular hot guy versus nerd with secret identity. (Incidentally, Khem did drop into rude / informal when arguing with his Aunt and defending his ma. Bratty boy.) The leads have good chemistry (First always does), and everyone is very pretty. The main boy reminds me of J-Min's role (and look) in Love Class 2. I am entertained. (And faintly wonder why this isn't a MosBank vehicle.)

To Be Continued (Thai C3 Thailand grey) eps 1-3 of 8- High school sweethearts who had a bad break up reunite a decade later when both of them have full time jobs (celebrity & doctor). Dr Ji is a familiar face (hi Dream it's been a LONG time) and everyone is way too old for high school, but I guess I prefer this to child actors?

I'm enjoying it, actually, the cast may be older but they're solid as a result and the chemistry is on point for a pulp. Whether our celebrity is on the DL or cheating or something else remains to be seen but he sure is smitten. The way he LOOKS at Ji = hawt.

Frankly? Celebrity/doctor is a good pairing and this is a solid Thai BL. I hope we have a nice angsty reason for the break-up and we're not in another Promise situation. I like the sides too. Carry on, little show, I'm disposed to be pleased with you.

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) eps 5-6 of 12 - I am enjoying it, actually. It’s incredibly silly. But I don’t really mind. STOP SINGING. 

1000 Years Old eps 3-4 of 12 - I love that these kids basically adopted a vampire pet. And one of them accidentally got a vampire boyfriend. This suddenly turned from a PNR into a family drama about domestic gays opening a food stall and I'm not mad about it. Nothing makes sense and I don't care because... rainbow umbrella!

A Secretly Love (Thai WeTV grey) eps 1 of 10 - I don’t love it. I make no bones about the fact that a pining uke rarely works for me, especially if he’s younger (cute supportive besties not withstanding), the power dynamic isn’t good. I always like Kimmon, he’s a stiff actor but v pretty. (I shallow af.) Still it’s time he started acting his age… literally. Having to watch ads again as well… for this? Ooof. I'm not sure I'm strong enough.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Perfect Propose (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 6 fin - It was very cute. I liked that there was uke instigated kisses. However I have some reservations on this one, much as I enjoyed it.

Adapted from Mayo Tsurakame’s manga, production team included Tadaaki Horai (My Love Mix-Up!) and Takeshi Miyamoto (Old Fashion Cupcake). Essentially Perfect Propose was about finding hope in a person when all other hope is gone. This show focuses on apathy, and perforce is somewhat apathetic and un-engaging especially as the pacing was off (and with only 6 episodes? now) However, this is countered by great visuals, good archetypes, and a clean story of childhood sweethearts reuniting after loosing their way in life. I landed on 8/10 mostly for a demanding younger seme and some great kisses. 

Unknown (Taiwan Tues Youku YouTube) eps 2-3 of 11 - Oh it’s great. I love it. I’m still worried by how gritty and "Taiwanese short-esk" it feels, but wow does this hit all my favorite taboo tropes and buttons. I also adore the little found fam, they the cutest gay older bros ever. The younger one who wants so bad to grow up and take care of the older one and pushes himself because into self sacrifice that’s the only model of love he has. ARGH. BOYS. Why so much pain, just smooch already! Sheesh. It's on YouTube for some of us, here's the schedule.

AntiReset (Taiwan Fri Viki/Gaga) eps 6-7 of 10 - They remain questionably cute, and that is probably going to be my ultimate review of this show. Awe cameo! (Hi babies, hope the ghosts are leaving you alone.) The irony does not escape me that the person in the relationship with the most emotional acumen is, in fact, the robot and not the human. I'm sure that's meant to be deep.

Love is Better the Second Time Around AKA Koi wo Suru nara Nidome ga Joto (Japan Gaga) ep 1 of 6 - A tortured second chance romance featuring a reported and a successful celebrity(?) academic. The kid actors look nothing like their adult counterparts, but they do look much younger. So, okay. Ah the utter embarrassment of first love. Oh I like it a lot, so very messy Japanese emo. Sigh. Here we go again.

Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Japan Thurs Gaga) eps 8-9 of 10 - They are a cute couple. They both trying so hard and so confused and awkward and polite in trying to understand each other but TERRIBLE at communication. 

My Strawberry Film (Japan Thurs Gaga) eps 3-4 of 8 - I don’t know how I feel about this. But I do know it’s not my thing because it’s not BL. I’ll finish it because it’s short but… meh.

What Did You Eat Yesterday Season 2 AKA Kinou Nani Tabeta? Season 2 (Japan Gaga) 10 eps - will binge when I have any spare time. 2024 is crazy busy for me so far.

The Servant and the Young Master (Vietnam YouTube) - I will try when I have a window of time.

Began Beginning (Myanmar YouTube) - A Burmese BL? @heretherebedork vouched for it, so I will watch eventually.

It's airing but...

Dead Friend Forever (Thai iQIYI) - finished it's run and I won't be watching it. It's horror with BL elements and the ending, well, let's just say that's a "no thank you" from me.

Ossans Love Season 2 (Japan Gaga) - 5 years later, will anything have changed? This is Japan so… no. I'm not watching this. I dislike this franchise.

Time the series (Tue Gaga/YT) 10 eps - dropped it at ep 4.

Takumi-kun (2023) movie version AKA Takumi-kun Series 6: Nagai Nagai Monogatari no Hajimari no Asa released on FOD 3/5/2024. The original project was a 6 ep series. Having seen all the previous iterations and read the (terrible) yaoi I admit to being intrigued. If anyone finds eng subbed please let me know with a link in comments or in a DM? For those intersted in this show, probably the world's first true BL franchise I chat all about it here.

Phupha (Gun) and Khram (Nat) love each other but Phupha is murdered. Then Khram is pulled to a parallel world where, 12 years ago, Khram and Tai (Max) were in love. However, Khram was killed by Thai’s dad. Now Tai finds alter-Khram apparently alive. But then there is ALSO an alter-Phupha (played by Gun Thanawat who is Khom the repressed butler bodyguard from Unforgotten Night).

Everyone at your high school knew that it was best to avoid Blake.

The upperclassman was a bully, plain and simple. He had a habit of beating people down if they dared get in his way, or even if they just looked at him in a manner he didn't appreciate.

You were on the complete opposite of the spectrum: a grade-A nerd. You were a goody two-shoes to boot, always volunteering after school and helping your fellow classmates study whenever they struggled with a subject. The captain of the Mathletes team and one of the star columnists in the school newspaper, you were the epitome of nerd.

However, even with your good nature, you avoided Blake as best as you could, fearful that you'd face his wrath and have him beat your face into a pulp. You'd heard the stories, and you'd seen enough teen movies to know that bullies and nerds do not mix, at all.

Unfortunately, one Friday morning, you walked out of the front door to your house to head towards the bus stop-- but you immediately froze when Blake was in your driveway, leaning casually against his car.

"Bl-Blake?" you coughed out in surprise. "What are you doing--"

Blake just grunted and opened up the passenger side door, gesturing at it. When you didn't make a move, his frown deepened on his face.

"Get in!" he barked, the forcefulness of his deep voice making you jump.

Afraid of making the bully even angrier, you scurried over towards the car and practically leapt inside. "Um, wh-where are we going?" you trembled as soon as Blake got in and started to drive off down the street.

Blake cocked his eyebrow at you in confusion. "School," he scoffed, as if it should've been obvious.

You wanted to ask why the school bully was driving you to school, but you were too concerned with how he placed his arm over your small shoulders in the tight confines of the car.

You were stunned silent at first, but then something popped into your head that you couldn't ignore.

"How did you know where I live?" you asked Blake, your voice small and barely audible over the loud music playing over the speakers.

"Huh?" Blake asked, turning the volume down a bit before shaking his head. "Don't worry about it."

"B-but..."

Blake turned the volume back up, effectively silencing you. You kept your lips pursed for the rest of the drive to school, anxiety seeping out of your every pore. When Blake finally parked in the parking lot, you thought about bolting as fast as you could, but your legs were like jelly.

You nearly crawled out of the car and cautiously began to walk towards the entrance when a tight visegrip swallowed your hand.

Blake interlocked his fingers with yours, giving you a sneer when you attempted to pull away. He was much stronger than you, and when you kept trying, he leaned down closer to your ear.

Thanks to his proximity, a lot of the other students began to gawk at the two of you, their eyes widening and many of them murmuring to another as they saw the school bully holding hands with the nerdiest person in class.

"You're smart," Blake smirked as he whispered in your ear, "so I need you to comprehend this: You're mine."

A cold shiver traveled down your spine, and you tried to pull away once more; but Blake was much stronger than you, and he gave you a rough tug, making you topple into him.

"That's one," Blake sneered, even holding up one of his fingers to count. "When I get to three, I'll have to punish you. So make sure you behave and be my sweet little angel, got it?"

Swallowing hard, you nodded, fearful of what was in store for you.

- Simon expected that once he quit boxing and left his career behind him, he would never have to deal with it again. He assumed wrong. He was called back by an old friend, John Price

“I know she doesn’t look like much but trust me, she packs a punch. She’s just like you.” John slid a picture of you forward, showing Simon your bright grin. How could a girl like you be as ruthless as he had heard in the news?

Simon knew what they called you; the female version of Ghost.

- During his prime, Simon was a merciless fighter. He was known for destroying his opponents to a pulp and apparently, you borrowed his methods

- “Come back, Simon. The boxing world misses ya. Don’t you miss it too? Come back and I promise yer, I’ll you the most famous trainer this club has ever seen.” John ambitiously stated, folding his arms over his broad chest.

“Trainer?” Simon questioned, raising an eyebrow.

“You train ‘er,” John tapped your photograph, “And you’ll go down in history.”

- It didn’t take much to convince Simon to return. All he needed to see was you train and he agreed in a heartbeat

- He watched you carefully as you sparred with a teammate. It was supposed to be a mock fight but you were treating it like it was real. Beads of sweat dripped down your neck as you moved without even thinking. You were on a hunt for blood

- Simon saw your eyes light up as your fist connected with your teammate’s nose. Blood dripped down, staining their teeth. But instead of kneeling down and sobbing, they smiled

- “Only the crazy ones go up against her. We have ‘ta put out a warning that if you spar with Y/N, she’ll make ya bleed.” John states. “So, what’da ya think?”

It took Ghost a moment to reply. He slowly nodded his head. “Okay. I’ll train her.”

John whistled, beckoning you over like a damn dog. Through, in the arena, that’s all you really were.

- You were excited to be paired with Simon, aka Ghost. You had watched his fights in your late teenager years. He was an absolute legend

- Despite Simon being a little annoyed John managed to drag him back into boxing, he soon overcame it while spending time with you

- You understood his advice that no one else could. He wanted you to punch harder? You did so until your knuckles split and Simon had to patch you up. He wanted you to practice your kicks? Say no more, you spend all night practicing.

- He wanted you to perfect your signature move? No problem. He just has to be prepared to find you slumped in the corner of the training arena the next day because you refused to leave until you got it perfect

- The line between trainer and trainee blurs when Simon gives you his number in case of emergencies. You call later that night.

“We’re out of Doritos!” You yell into the phone. Simon furrows his brows in confusion, rechecking your contact name.

“Wot?” He mutters in confusion.

He hears you mumble to yourself as you check the number you had dialled. And then you’re back on the line. “Sorry, sir. Wrong number. Meant to call my roommate.”

“You still want Doritos? I got some at my place.”

You pause before speaking again. “You got any Coco Cola?” Simon loudly hums. “I’m on my way.”

- You didn’t fight fair but Simon liked that about you. You bit and scratched like a feral animal and nobody ever punished you for it because you were the crowd’s favourite. And you just so happened to have another favourite as your esteemed trainer. Simon only had to wave his hand and the charges against you for clawing at a girl’s face during a match would be dropped

- It’s not like you meant to develop a crush on your trainer. It just… happened. He was an attractive man and you were only human

- You had the stupid idea of confiding in Jonny, another trainer whom you had formed a close bond with. You expected him to keep his mouth shut but little did you know, he had a knack for blabbing

- Everything fell to shit the day you collapsed. You were a living, breathing replica of Simon but that also meant you overworked yourself. You didn’t remember much of what happened that day

- You had just gotten out of the ring, victorious and listening to the crowd cheer. You remembered how your chest ached and yet you ignored it. The match was difficult which explained the way your legs wobbled in exhaustion

- Your lips were cracked and stinging and bloody spit coated your face. You looked and felt absolutely disgusting. But you didn’t have a chance to clean your face before black dots invaded your vision and it got harder to breathe

- You remember how your head hit the concrete but everything after that was an unknown blur

- You were sitting on the rooftop after being discharged by the hospital when Simon approached you.

“Kid.”

Your jaw clenched at the wretched name. That was all he saw you as; a kid who no longer had any idea what she was fighting for. “Don’t call me that.”

“Y/N.” He corrects himself and it makes you feel a little better. “You want out of the ring? Just say the word and I’ll get yer out.”

- Simon expected you to be like him. To realize that boxing was useless without passion. But when you turned to look at him, he saw the fury in your eyes.

“I ain’t quitting, sir. I don’t quit.”

“I know you had problems with your parents. They pushed you to do things you didn’t wanna. You don’t have ‘ta do this if ya don’t want to.”

“Don’t wanna fuckin’ talk ‘bout them. You ain’t my therapist.” You were more hostile than usual thanks to the stitches in your lips.

- “Kid.” The word just slips and Simon doesn’t have enough time to take it back.

“Call me that one more fucking time!” You exclaim, “I ain’t your fucking kid! I don’t want ‘cha to be my daddy!”

- Something clicks in Simon’s head as he remembers Jonny’s drunken words during a pool match. Jonny told Simon about your crush, unintentionally outing you. No wonder you were staring at him with so much pent-up rage. You were sick of this ‘will they, won’t they’ game

- “Y/N.” He states firmly, “I know how you feel about me. Jonny ain’t exactly good at keepin’ his mouth shut.”

“If you’re gonna reject me, hurry up. I don’t got all day.” He watches as you scowl, so quick to jump to conclusions.

“Who said I was gon’ reject you?”

“The way you’re looking at me right now says it.”

“This is literally my resting face.”

- Simon isn’t good at expressing any emotion whatsoever. But the way you make him feel is different. You brought his love for boxing back

- Before your trip to the hospital, you trained daily per Simon’s request. You thought it was so he could monitor you better. In reality, he just wanted to see you more frequently. He liked the way you laughed and the way your eyes crinkled when you smiled

- “Three words, Y/N. Say ‘I like you’ and I’m yours.”

Simon knows how prideful you are. You won’t repeat after him unless you really mean it.

“I like you.” Surprisingly, you say it. You’re playing with the hem of your knitted sweater and Simon almost laughs at how ironic it is

- You’re one of the most feared boxers currently, always lusting for blood, and Simon has you like putty without even touching you

- You don’t need to speak for Simon to know what you’re indicating now. You want him to kiss you. So he does

- He leans forward, pressing his lips against yours and you swear you feel fireworks go off

- From then on, the line between trainer and trainee ceases to exist. A week later, a picture of you and Simon kissing after your latest match makes headlines

- “Was this all a hoax to get me a date?” Simon grunts before taking a small sip of his tea.

“Yup.” John shamelessly confesses, “So, how’s my matchmaking skills?”

“Fucking shit.”

“Hm. Didn’t seem too bad when I saw you and your lady kissin’ in the hallway.”

“Don’t watch us make out, yer creep.”

“Then don’t make out where I can see it. I walk that route every single day. I don’t wanna see the two of you exchanging saliva.”

Hey Shan!! IDK if you're planning to do a BL wrap up or superlatives or anything like that this year so this question might be a bit too early but um...what has been a few of your favorite first watches for 2024 bls?

Hi Eboni! This is actually pretty good timing for a list because most of the shows that will end within 2024 are already over! The only two I could see maybe making my list that have not ended yet are Love is Like a Poison (Japan) and Blue Canvas of Youthful Days (China), so I'll mention them here (fingers crossed they end well and stay favs).

That said, here are my favorite completed BLs of 2024 (alpha order)!

At 25:00 in Akasaka (Japan, Gaga)

Two actors who first met in college are cast in a bl together, old feelings resurface, and the lines between their professional and private lives start to blur. This show is super beautiful and moody.

Cooking Crush (Thailand, YouTube or WeTV for uncut)

Ten and Prem are my favorite of OffGun's many couples. Ten is a med student with food issues who wants to learn how to cook, and Prem is a chef in training. Their romance is super sweet and I also really like the side couple and friend groups in this one.

Cherry Magic Thailand (Thailand, YouTube or Viu, requires VPN)

I still can't believe this show happened. How on earth did GMMTV manage to make a superior version of Cherry Magic?? Tay Tawan had a lot to do with it, along with a very smart adaptation. It's so sweet and funny and perfect (if you just pretend ep 8 doesn't exist).

City of Stars (Thailand, iQIYI)

I was surprised by how much I liked this charming little Thai pulp. It had an interesting story with strong writing and the pair was very good together. More people should watch it!

I Became the Main Role of a BL Drama (Japan, Gaga)

This is a short and sweet and note perfect BL comedy about two actors falling for each other while making a BL. Loaded with meta jokes about the industry and stan culture and very loving about it.

Knock Knock Boys (Thailand, Gaga)

I am obsessed with this excellent Thai BL that not nearly enough people watched. Two couples, both compelling and sexy and fun, and amazing friendship dynamics. I want everyone to watch it!

Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo (S Korea, iQIYI)

My top BL of the year. It's a second chance romance, you see the characters both in high school and later as adults and I don't really want to spoil anything else about it. It's beautiful, the characters are so compelling, and the story is masterfully told.

Love for Love's Sake (S Korea, iQIYI)

This one is special and quite unique, and I also don't want to spoil much about it! It begins with a basic isekai set up that then goes to some unexpected places. Really, really beautiful show.

Love Sea (Thailand, iQIYI)

Definitely my favorite spicy romance of the year. I really loved a lot about the story for this one, in particular the class dynamics that defined the characters and their relationship, and Mahasamut (played by Fort) is on my list of favorite drama characters this year.

Marahuyo Project (Philippines, YouTube)

We didn't get much from the Philippines this year, but they did drop one absolute banger in this show about a fierce and proud gay kid who gets booted out of school in Manila and sent to live with his grandma and mother on a small island. He makes friends and enemies and starts an LGBTQ+ club, and falls in love along the way.

Mr Mitsuya's Planned Feeding (Japan, fansub)

An excellent age gap romance about a young editor and the chef who writes for his magazine making food together and falling in love. Lots of fun side characters, too. I loved every minute of this show.

Perfect Propose (Japan, Gaga)

Two old friends meet when one of them is in need of housing and one is on the verge of a nervous breakdown from a soul-sucking corporate job, and help each other heal. This one is short and sweet.

Ossan's Love Returns (Japan, Gaga)

This one is technically a sequel, but you can enjoy it without having seen the original (and might like it better that way, tbh). One of the funniest shows of the year and featuring a main couple that is a personal fav and are now on my ride or die list.

Takara's Treasure (Japan, Gaga)

This one is a simple story but so, so sweet. A cute little bean follows his mysterious idol to university and joins the hiking club to get to know him better. They get to know each other slowly and fall in love.

Unknown (Taiwan, Viki)

ALMOST my favorite bl of the year, but we had a few issues on the back end. Despite that, I still loved it a whole lot. A family drama and a love story about two chosen brothers whose relationship changes over time. Easily the best BL Taiwan made this year.

Looking at this list, I am realizing how absolutely invaluable my Gaga and iQIYI subscriptions have become; it's where nearly all my favorite BL is airing.

Broken Bones.

Grian sat stiffly on one of the makeshift beds that Stress had thrown together to resemble a hospital setup. It was more of a padded bench with blankets and extra pillows stacked around for support, but it did the job. His scarlet macaw wing jutted out at an unnatural angle, the vibrant feathers ruffled and bent. It was unmistakably broken. Pain throbbed up and down his side, but he tried not to let it show.

Across from him, on a second “bed,” Mumbo lay with a crooked grin and an equally crooked wing—his cinnabar moth wing, soft and dusted with pale orange scales, was slightly crumpled at the edge. He shifted carefully, trying not to disturb the injury, though his shoulders were shaking slightly.

“You’re trying not to laugh, aren’t you?” Grian muttered, raising an eyebrow.

Mumbo let out a strangled chuckle and nodded, his teeth clenched. “We both crashed trying to get through that last ring first. You clipped the edge and spun me right into it.”

Grian tried to look annoyed, but the memory of their midair disaster—the way they’d each aimed for the same opening in the sky, pushing their wings to the limit, the sudden tangle of feathers and air and curses—was too ridiculous. A grin tugged at the edge of his mouth. “You rammed me!”

“And you challenged me!”

“Fair point.”

The laughter faded, though, as a strange sensation crept up Grian’s spine. It wasn’t just the wing. Something… off. A shadow of unease curled in his chest. He tensed and looked around the room as if something might be watching from the rafters, but nothing was there. Just the soft creak of the wood, the gentle scent of herbs in the air. He gave a small shake of his head and forced the tension away.

Stress strolled into the room a moment later, framed by warm sunlight from the hallway. Her long, chestnut hair was braided with wildflowers, petals woven in like jewelry. The earthy smell of soil and green things followed her in; she’d clearly just been in her garden. Her monarch butterfly wings unfurled briefly behind her, orange and black veined, catching the light before flicking shut again. She took one look at the scene—two broken-winged idiots grinning at each other like children caught doing something they shouldn’t—and sighed.

“What now?” she asked dryly, walking over to Mumbo and inspecting his injured wing with gentle, practiced fingers.

“We… may have been racing through the ring course,” Mumbo admitted sheepishly, his voice light with guilt. “It was fine until the second-to-last one. I think we both clipped it at the same time.”

Stress gave him a flat look, then moved to Grian and examined the bright red feathers of his wing. Her hands were cool and firm. “They’re both broken,” she declared, shaking her head again. “Honestly, you two… like a pair of hatchlings.”

She crossed the room to her workbench and began pulling out ingredients from woven baskets and glass jars. A bunch of comfrey leaves went into a stone bowl, and she crushed them with a smooth pestle until they turned to green pulp. To this, she added a blob of minty, semi-transparent gel—its sharp scent cleared the air—then crumbled a few dried lavender blossoms over the top. The mix turned a soft violet as she stirred.

Next came the casts—specially made for wings, feather-light and flexible. She lined the inside of each with the paste and carried the smaller one over to Mumbo.

“Hold still,” she said, carefully wrapping it around his wing, binding it snugly but not too tight. “You’ll need to stay grounded for a while. Don’t even think about flying.”

Mumbo saluted her with his uninjured arm. “Yes, ma’am.”

Stress turned back to Grian. “Yours is worse. I’ll need to set the bone.”

He tensed. “Ah. Great.”

“Deep breath, hon.”

Before he could protest, she took the twisted section of his wing in her hands, gave it a sharp, precise push—crack—and straightened it. Grian yelped, gripping the edge of the bed with white knuckles. The pain bloomed for a second like a sunburst behind his eyes, then dulled slightly as the cast was quickly applied.

“There we go,” she said soothingly. “Now both of you, sit still. I’ll make you some poppy and chamomile tea for the pain.”

As she bustled back to her supplies, muttering about reckless flyers and how she was going to start charging them in feathers, Grian leaned his head back and sighed. Despite the pain, despite the soreness and his faint unease… he smiled again.

“I still think I was winning,” he murmured.

Mumbo laughed softly. “Keep dreaming, bird boy.”

Grian was sent home after just one day in Stress’s care. She had done all she could: bound the wing, given him salves and tea, even kissed his forehead with a playful warning not to “do anything stupid or aerial.” He'd laughed then, but now, sitting alone in his kitchen, the silence felt louder than any of her teasing.

He sat at the small wooden table, hunched slightly forward, one wing stiff and cradled in its cast. His food sat untouched in front of him—simple bread, some honey, a little fruit—but he couldn’t bring himself to eat. His talon tapped rhythmically against the tabletop, the clicking echoing in the stillness.

Something was wrong.

It wasn’t the pain; that was dull now, managed with tea and ointment. It wasn’t even the immobility. Grian had dealt with injuries before—scrapes, sprains, even a cracked rib once during a prank gone wrong. Broken bones healed. That was just what they did.

But this time… this time felt different.

His gaze drifted to his wing. The feathers were limp where they spilled out of the cast, dulled and bent at the edges. The vibrant scarlet seemed faded, like an old memory of color. He frowned. What if it didn’t heal?

The thought hit him like a stone to the chest.

Where did that come from?

He tried to shake it off. Bones heal. He knew that. He’d broken a leg once when he was younger, tumbling off a rooftop chasing a paper kite. It had healed just fine. So had the wrist he’d strained lifting stone for a redstone project that went wrong. This would be no different.

Except… it was.

His wing wasn’t like a limb. It wasn’t just bone and muscle—it was flight. It was instinct. It was freedom. And the more he thought about it, the more the possibility haunted him.

What if it didn’t heal?

What if he never flew again?

The thought dug its claws into his mind and refused to let go. It followed him through the quiet hours of the day, when the sun cast long shadows through his windows. It hovered beside him in the evenings, when the pain in his wing flared and the tea wasn’t enough. And at night, when the world was dark and he lay in bed listening to the wind rustle the trees outside—taunting him—it grew louder.

After a few days, Grian began to recognize the feeling curling deep in his chest. Sadness wasn’t new to him. He’d wrestled with depression before—times when the world seemed to dim, when everything felt like it took too much energy, too much thought. But this wasn’t just emotional. This felt primal.

He wasn’t just sad. He felt… wrong.

Like something essential had been stripped away. Like a deep, ancient part of him had registered the injury and decided: You should not be alive. The same instinct that told him to eat when he was hungry or drink when he was parched now whispered something far darker: Wings are meant to fly. If you can’t, then what are you?

It scared him.

Not because he thought it was true—but because it felt true. Somewhere beneath the logic, under all the reassurances he tried to give himself, the feeling remained. And feelings that deep… they didn’t go away easily.

He rubbed his hands over his face, then looked at his untouched food again. He forced himself to pick up a piece of bread. He had to start somewhere. One bite. One breath.

The wing would heal. It had to.

But in the quiet moments, when the pain flared and the doubts returned, Grian wasn’t sure what he feared more: that it wouldn’t heal…

…or that even if it did, something inside him had already broken.

Now, Grian sat outside, perched on the very top of his base, balanced on the highest of the floating rocks. The wind up here was sharp and restless, tugging at his feathers and ruffling his hair. Clouds drifted far below him, casting shifting shadows over the land. The sky was wide and open above, the kind of view that should have made his heart soar.

But it didn’t.

Stress had told him just that morning—it’d only be another week before his wing healed completely. One more week and he’d be free to fly again. One more week, and this would all be over.

But it didn’t feel that way.

Even with the news, even with the careful, hopeful tone in her voice, Grian still felt like he should be dead. It wasn’t dramatic. It wasn’t even emotional, in the way pain or sadness usually was. It was just… fact. A still, cold truth that had settled deep inside him and refused to leave.

He shut his eyes tight, trying to breathe through it. He’d used scaffolding blocks to climb all the way up here. The old way. The slow way. His wing was still bound, still stiff, feathers half-mended and twitching now and then in protest. He knew it was getting better. The bruising had faded. The pain was mostly gone.

But still.

He didn’t trust himself up here.

Because the longer he sat on the edge, the louder the thoughts got.

What if he just… leaned forward?

Just a little. Just enough.

He wouldn’t even need to think about it. One shift of weight. One breath. One moment of surrender.

And the funny—no, awful—thing was: it didn’t even scare him. Not anymore. He wasn’t standing on the edge in fear of falling.

He was standing there wondering if he wanted to.

The instinct to live… the one that usually screamed when you stood too close to an edge… was quiet now. Gone. All he could think about, all he’d been able to think about for the last two days, was death.

Maybe he could just—

The sound of wingbeats snapped him back.

They were strong and steady, beating through the air like a drum. Grian looked up sharply, blinking as the light caught on tawny feathers. Another avian—stronger, taller—touched down beside him with practiced ease.

False.

She folded her eagle wings tightly behind her and crouched beside him on the rock without a word, as if she belonged there too.

“…Hi?” Grian said, his voice cracking just a little. He didn’t know what emotion he meant to show—confusion? guilt? shame?

False tilted her head, eyes unreadable. “Hey. Just wanted to see how you’ve been handling the broken wing.”

Her tone was casual, but there was something careful under it. Something measured.

Grian shifted, hugging his good arm around his knees, looking away. He didn’t answer.

False sighed softly, wings rustling as she adjusted her perch. “Have you ever broken a wing before?”

He shook his head without looking at her.

“Ah,” she said. “Then you don’t know… do you?”

Grian frowned and glanced at her. “Don’t know what?”

She gave a quiet, breathy chuckle, but it didn’t sound amused. “Avian instincts. They’re a beast of their own.”

False looked out across the horizon for a moment, eyes narrowed against the wind. Then she spoke again, slower now.

“When an avian breaks a wing, something happens. It’s not just physical. The body panics. The mind starts turning on itself. We’re wired to fly—meant to. It’s instinctual, not emotional. When you can’t fly, your instincts start to believe you're dying. Or worse—that you should be dead.”

She turned back to look at him. Her eyes were softer now. “And when that goes on for too long, it gets worse. You start to believe it too. Even if the wing’s healing. Even if everyone says you’ll be fine. If you think you’re grounded forever… your brain starts whispering terrible things. That’s when avians become suicidal—just because their body’s convinced there’s no point living anymore.”

Grian stared at her, his mouth slightly open.

“Did… did you never learn that?” she asked gently.

He shook his head, eyes wide, voice barely audible. “No. I haven’t.”

False nodded slowly, and for a long moment, neither of them spoke.

The wind continued to howl around the rock. Somewhere far below, birds chirped, oblivious. Grian’s thoughts were still tangled and heavy—but now, suddenly, they weren’t entirely alone. A thread of understanding had been drawn between him and someone who knew.

He wasn’t weak. He wasn’t broken. He was just… an avian with a healing wing.

And maybe, just maybe, that made this awful feeling make sense.

False leaned back on her hands. “You’re not the first. You won’t be the last. It will pass, Grian. But you gotta give yourself time—and stop climbing up to high places when you’re thinking like this.”

He let out a shaky laugh, and it sounded more like a sob. But he nodded.

“…Okay.”

I will say, Kidnap is turning out to be as pulpy as I was initially hoping it would be.

It's fast-paced in a way that BL rarely is—our hero finds himself in a new predicament every week, struggling to balance his situational needs with his moral code. He's fighting off loan sharks, his brother has health issues, he's struggling with a kidnapping that he's not emotionally committed to, he's falling for his target, he's getting involved with the mafia, and soon enough, the police will be on his tail.

It may not be as heavily sexual as some pulp can be, but Kidnap bears markers of erotic and romantic pulp stories—it's tinged with situational bondage, we have a sadistic villain, and its romance is built on a contrast of high danger and emotional tenderness. As a romantic lead, Min is both strong and vulnerable, while Q plays a "damsel in distress" who is smart, snarky, and more capable than he seems.

Because I'm not fluent in Thai, I'm not comfortable speaking to the wittiness or snappiness of the dialogue, but the show is funny, and the comedy brings a levity that such a fast-paced story needs. Not all shows dealing with heavy topics like loan sharks or mafia need a lighthearted or silly aspect, and often this can be out of place, but when you are moving as quickly as Kidnap, those heavier elements can feel like a constant barrage.

I won't declare that the show was for-sure going for a pulp feeling, but it certainly bears the markers of a lot of pulp literature. Pulp weeklies (which, incidentally, made a lot of their money off of advertisements x), needed stories that would keep their readers coming back week after week. How will Min get out of this predicament now?

Overall, I hope that people can take Kidnap as it is without judging it for failing to achieve something that it's not trying to accomplish. Pulp may not be for everyone, and that's fine. It's certainly not high-brow literature, it was made to be accessible to the masses, but many great writers got their start in pulp, and the pulp era had a lasting impact on modern storytelling. Personally, I tend to really love things with strong pulp influences, so I am being well fed by Kidnap. Maybe that will change in the future, but so far I have enjoyed each episode more than the last.

On a whim I decided to watch the new episode of I Promise I Will Comeback first tonight and holy hell!

What an NC scene!! Absolutely wild!! I don't even know how you could show it on tumblr without getting sent to horny jail. This show is really committed to giving Nankrai's love for TK all the spice... and all of the yearning!

The fact that we get these lengthy spicy and sweet scenes with TK and Nankrai, even if some are Nankrai's fantasy, makes me hopeful that they won't just stay his fantasy but become real.

But then again this is a pulp created to advertise an area of Thailand by the guy who also plays the main character and named the character after himself, so I'm not sure I can trust the show to follow what's normal for Thai BLs.

Question is whether we'll get a similarly steamy NC scene with Victor and TK. If this was a normal BL I'd guess no, but as already established, it isn't, so maybe... 👀

Side note, the fact that I decided to watch this show before Reset tonight really says a lot about this show. It's really won me over!! It's a weird one but there's just something genuine about it that makes me excited for the next episode. Also I did just get a WeTV subscription in part because I wanted to watch and support this show.

Oh no, y'all, oh no, I love Sprite. I adore him. This boy? My favorite.

He's soundly rejected and struggling with the feeling of not mattering to the people who should have loved him and like the lesser of the two choice and like he can do everything he can and no one will ever be proud of him...

And now he's seeing his twin brother, the one who is better than him, the one who was chosen when he wasn't, beaten and he has no idea why (and it's because of him even if he doesn't know yet) and now he all he has is his own skills.

I love him.

It really is Not Me but with sports instead of politics. Like, that's it and I love it here.

This is also my favorite way to do one-sided enemies to lovers because it's only one sided because the person changed, not because the enemies are actually one-sided.

Deep Night (Thurs iQiyi) ep 2 of 8 (10?) - Everyone seems to be a bit of a player and I’m not mad about it. It’s nice to see high-grade flirting, and I really love how very gay the leads feel. Not BL gay. Actual gay. We shall see how it goes, I suspect we are in "messy gay" territory in which case, I predict utter carnage and that this show will drop ranks precipitously for me. But right now? Of all the Thai BLs airing, I'm enjoying this the most. How bizarre. 

I like the side couple (thrupple?) too, despite the prat fall kiss and possible cheating. They very pretty:

To Be Continued (Thai C3 Thailand grey) ep 4 of 8 - oh dear NO honeychild, face masks are gross tasting!

Rule no 966 of the BL world. He’s never asleep. 

Argh Achi wants Ji so bad. Nice mutual kiss tho, despite Ji's baggage. I guess Ji knew what would happen if Achi stayed? But why is he so scared? Just deeply closeted? The backstory is very high school achy and I feel like it explained Achi but not Ji. And the crying in the movie was lovely, so we totally understand Achi's but Ji is just messed up and confused? I admit to being a bit confused too. Why is Ji the one so angry?

On a totally different aside, I really like how the set dressing is done in Ji’s apartment. It looks lived in and not staged. Super rare in Thai BL. I'm reminded of Ai & Pond's dorm room in Love By Chance, which actually looked like a real college dorm.

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 7 of 12 - Why is it always the pulps that actually trot out the best communication, conversation, consent, and healthy relationships? Yes I'm still wincing over the truly bad acting but I’m enjoying their good relationship. The sex scene was sweet and tender, although the likelihood of rose petals getting stuck places wigs me out. (Flower petals + lube = terrible combination. Just FYI.)

ALL PRAISE VERSE REP! And a bottom who owns it! Yay! 

1000 Years Old ep 5 of 12 - How ridiculously colorful and flirty they all are. There is nothing at all vampire about this show. I’m a bit bored by the restaurant plot but I'm tuning in for the bonkers approach to goth. How dare they be so cheerful with my precious emo youth, but also, how very Thai pulp of them.  

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Unknown (Taiwan Tues Youku YouTube) ep 4 of 11 - oh it’s SO GOOD. Reading the yaoi and crying. COME ON TAIWAN HAVE MERCY. The red wrapping of the hands (red thread, yes yes we get it). The boy who doesn’t want to box for so many reasons. Not the least of which is how unpleasant it is to spar with a lover. 

This is easily the best BL currently airing and it is going to hurt us. But I don't care. I love it.

AntiReset (Taiwan Fri Viki/Gaga) eps 8 of 10 - This show is dangerously cute and I’m scared for everyone involved, including me.

Love is Better the Second Time Around AKA Koi wo Suru nara Nidome ga Joto (Japan Gaga) ep 2 of 6 - Poor baby thrown in all willynilly amongst a pack of queeny bitchy gay intellectuals. I'd be lost too. It's the worse kind of fight, one you have to philosophize your way out of.

Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 10fin - They are extremely adorable and it was a very good ending - mature, adult, and bittersweet. I liked it a lot. But I didn’t love it the way I wanted to.

The promise of this show, younger cook courts older divorced office worker, should have been my catnip. I mean if someone pitched this to me in an elevator I would have downloaded it by the second storey. Unfortunately, it did not exactly fulfill that promise, not in the way I'd hoped. Did I still enjoy the ride, yes, but I feel just a little let down. 8/10 

My Strawberry Film (Japan Thurs Gaga) eps 5 of 8 - Honestly now I’m just shipping the two girls getting together. Frankly, I really don't like this show, and normally I'd DNF but there's only a few eps left and nothing else is airing rn.

A Secretly Love (Thai WeTV grey) 10 eps - I watched the first ep but grey is too much work for this inferior of a show. I may pick up and binge if it gets distribution but for now, it gets a DNF from me. KimCop might have held this crap together but Kim without Cop? No thank you.

Lady Boy Friends (Thai WeTV grey) 16 eps - reminds me a bit too much of Diary of Tootsies only high school, not my thing. DNF unless it turns a corner and is truly amazing for some reason.

The choreo controversy - Deep Night vs OnlyOneOf. Look, like a musical rift, or a styling photoshoot, there are no new ideas in choreo, I feel like Madonna did this pose too, a long time ago. Certainly someone in the 80s. Or whatever. Anygay, it's an ironic thing to see a Thai BL being called out by a gay-branded Kpop group when both are exploiting eroticized homosexuality for commercial profit... just saying. (HOW DID WE GET HERE?) Not to mention that BOTH are ALSO exploiting the kink community. We live in interesting times, BLabies. In the end, it's a good publicity stunt all round. And I think Nine knows exactly what he's doing (and why he is doing it). Finally: Drama drama drama around coreo? That is V gay boys. Fun fun fun, carry on everyone.

3/21 Two Worlds (Thai IQIYI) 10 eps - One of those "he's dead Jim so time travel" thingames staring MaxNat. I'm over this concept but Asia flipping loves it and I do enjoy MaxNat. Phupha (Gun) and Khram (Nat) love each other but Phupha is murdered. Then Khram is pulled to a parallel world where, 12 years ago, Khram and Tai (Max) were in love. However, Khram was killed by Tai’s dad. Now Tai finds alter-Khram apparently alive. But then there is ALSO an alter-Phupha to deal with. (Phupha is played by Gun Thanawat who was Khom, the repressed butler bodyguard from Unforgotten Night. We like this, we scared of the love triangle aspect.)

Have ya noticed that it's slender pickings right now but it shouldn't be? This is not the mid summer slump nor end of year lull. We should be getting some heavy hitters on first quarter release. (Side eyes GMMTV. Perhaps those painful Japanese acquisitions were a bigger issue than any of us realized?)

Anygay, IMHO, Thailand's BL bubble has popped and sponsor money is drying up. This is my shocked face:

Look, the 2021-2023 level of release and growth (exponential) was never gonna be sustainable, so I'm not surprised. I suspect that in 2024 Thailand will actually produce fewer BLs than 2023 (73, 64 in 2022, and 40 in 2021).

I know I'm sticking my neck out predicting any film industry but... I have seen this kinda thing before and it just *feels* like shrinkage. Thai BL's load has been shot, my peeps. (Not to be crass or anything.)

Oh, don't worry you pretty head about it, it's not going away, just getting less prolific.

I thought last week's episode of Kidnap had a much stronger core to it than this week's -- but I don't *think* I'm going to technically complain about it, because I think it was intentional.

Last week's episode clarified (at least at that moment) that Kidnap was playing around with pulp and camp, which, for GMMTV's ever-present demands on romance-above-all-else, eases the cheese on some of this episode's more commercially lovey moments. I loved this piece by user le-trash-prince (via @lurkingteapot) that went into some origin frameworks on pulp and how Kidnap is playing around with pulp tropes. This show is literally putting a bondage kink side-by-side with Series Y/Thai BL tropes, which we got SO MUCH OF today (man, that Thai rainfall is really killer).

What I missed in this episode, and what we got out of last week's episode, was the spotlight into Min's "work life," but we know we're gonna get back to it next week, and I see that the series felt the need to push the developing romance forward so that the future boyfs can handle the revelation that Min is working for the drug ring that wants to take Q's dad down. We're now up to episode 5, and Q still hasn't unlayered his PTSD for Min yet, but I think the show is being intentional about GMMTV's demands for love-in-boys-love by saying, listen, you want the moments? Here are the moments, I am intentionally handing you the moments. The hands over the ears, the play fighting, the mole touching, the gazes. Now, next week? We'll get back to our job of moving this plot forward.

At least, I'm hoping for that, because I thought that the way Min's life is twisted in these circles of crime was paced well, and I don't want to see that pace move off track -- and I liked how the crime stuff was juxtaposed with BL tropes as well.

I'm remembering that this show is directed by the guy who did Midnight Museum, so I'm giving the show a lot of leeway in messiness. This episode wasn't messy, per se -- I truly, honestly, LOVE SEEING the classic BL tropes back in my face (geez, Ohm is arguably an originator of some of these tropes!!!) -- but I liked where we were going with Min's money travails, and I'm hoping that's as equally a driver of this show as MinQ themselves moving forward.

yoyoyo speaking of pulp that features hell and weird porn(?) I read part of a chinese anthology (https://exiledrebelsscanlations.com/he-and-it-chapter-66/) because the concept was so goofy and weird; Horse farrier falls into hell and gains a harem of hell-horses. The fetish(?) is uhhh, "farrier-ing" (cleaning a horses' hooves) and clearly inspired by those edited instagram/tiktok videos that got/have gotten really popular (look up farrier on YT and you'll see videos with millions of views). It kinda made me think of Hell Game a little?
