A.S.A. Octonauts Headcanons:

Pt. 7 — Shellington:

“Jumping Jellyfish!”

Shellington Mellegan, a lovely boy with a brilliant mind.

Shellington was born and raised in the Shetland Islands of Scotland with his older sister Pearl and his parents.

Early on Shellington (Who went by Shelly in his early years) figured out quite harshly that he couldn’t eat red urchins like the rest of his species. You’d be alarmed too if you saw his face swell up like a balloon. (When his sister didn’t let him do what he wanted–I’m the oldest in my family I get it–he would threaten to eat one just to get his way, he was that devious)

His poor parents when they realized what was happening, oh my heavens.

He didn’t mind it much though, clams and fish had always tasted better than the urchins ever did. But it was the opinions of the other otters that set him apart before he had even learned to speak.

When he began to show a higher intelligence during his childhood, learning things at a much greater speed than the other children, they began to bully him, calling him awful names and mocking his interests. And Pearl was always right beside him, making sure that they kept far away from her little brother.

(If you’ve ever seen the show Puffin Rock, Pearl acted a lot like Oona and Shellington like Baba when they were kids) [ P.R. Characters ]

He was her little shadow. But even Pearl couldn’t always be with him. Whether she was at school or off with her friends, he was out in the water playing with all the little fish that lived in the kelp.

Shellington is 100% autistic, if he isn’t throw me in the ocean, I’ll let the orcas eat me.

I see Shellington being the type of child who devoted a lot of his free time, learning about the ocean, spending time in it, and just being a part of it.

He collected seashells, bird feathers, shark teeth, anything that wasn’t sand he had a collection of. (I do see him having a small bottle of sand on his desk though lol)

Shellington, although a quick learner, was non verbal for the first 5-6 years of his life. But you don’t have to speak to be intelligent. (Unfortunately that was another thing the kids mocked for.) But his family had gotten used to it, learning new ways to talk to him, whether that was through sign language or even imaginative play. They were so used to it in fact that when he said his first words they nearly fell over!

The situation was like this: Shellington and his family were just settling down at the table for dinner, the sun was setting and it was a lovely evening all around. He and Pearl had just come in from playing and their parents were setting down the last of the food when–BAM!

The kitchen window burst open and a sea of feathers exploded all over the dining table nearly causing it to topple. An Albatross had been looking for a place to land when a massive wind took hold of him, causing him to topple right into their kitchen and onto their table.

And the first thing that was said, in the tiniest of voices yet in the loudest way possible was, “Jumping Jellyfish!”

Suffice it to say, Shellington had plenty of feathers to add to his collection that day, and his parents might’ve caught at least ten fish from how far their jaws had dropped.

(The albatross was fine, just a little shaken up)

School was almost exactly like everything else, except he liked it a lot more. There were books for him to read and an entire library for him to explore. He didn’t have very many friends his age, most people he got along with were actually Pearl’s friends (she liked to surround herself with good people who actually cared about others and never lived by anyone else’s opinions). They understood him, and were mature enough to have patience with him. He’s still friends with some of them even now.

From day one Shellington wanted to learn, but high school and college is where he actually had the resources to do it. At every avenue he sought to find all the best ways to live his dream of becoming a Biologist, later taking the path of Marine life.

At the end of his senior year Shellington received a letter, inviting him to join a short term program that would allow kids to really experience what it was like being in the field, and it was led by none other than Professor Inkling himself.

The professor was looking for students to tutor, people who were passionate enough to change the world. That’s how the pair of them met. Shellington became one of five other candidates to join the professor as one of his personal pupils. They worked together for about a year when Inkling had decided that it was finally time to retire, meaning he would no longer be on the Octonauts. (Pfft, yeah right)

But Inkling didn’t have to search far for his replacement. Out of all his students Shellington was the one to shine out the most. He cared so deeply about the ocean and the creatures within it, Inkling knew the otter had to be the one to take his place.

Family:

Shellington’s parents were scientists as well, setting quite the example for Shellington and Pearl. The pair of them actually studied whales, specializing in Orcas and Minkes. It was a dangerous job but it was their passion. They’ve since retired but run a whale watching company during the spring and summer, returning to their Shetland home in the wintertime.

Pearl eventually married to another otter named Ailean (Alan) who she met while apprenticing at a research center. Ailean travels a lot (hence why we never see him in the show, hint HiNt) for work. He is also a marine biologist and studies beluga/dolphin migration patterns (beluga's mostly).

And not long after Shellington joined the Octonauts, Pearl had Periwinkle.

The Vegimals:

Ofc we all know how special the Vegimals are. Not only to the crew but to Shellington as well.

(Canonically there are around 13 vegimals, but for the sake of simplicity I narrowed them down to 9 – excluding Vegi-Bot ofc. Still a lot, but these are the ones most people see in the show anyways besides Perchkin/Sharchini)

From the moment they hatched, Shellington felt this overwhelming drive to not only understand them, but to protect them as well. In turn he’s basically become a father figure to the little veggie-babies, making sure they always feel safe around him.

(Shellington would try to give the Vegimals the best life, never wanting any of them to feel alone or sad like he was growing up. He'd be such a good dad without even knowing it.)

Fun Facts:

Shellydoo’s fav color is green~

Fav Gup is the Gup-E, that one thankfully survives most of his outings. But he does tend to fall asleep in E, leaving the battery running a little too long every time.

Shellington had a very hard time when he joined the team, it wasn’t until he realized that most of them had the same interests as him that he finally began to really open up.

The team kinda just lets him rant, which is so wholesome.

Feeling sad cuz finished all of Bluey and now don't have a little show to watch 😭 have you got any reccs ❤️

Yes I do! I figure you might want shows that are like Bluey and not just kids shows.

Trash Truck is another tv show that is very destimulating, and talks about things with thoughtful inflection kids can understand (Like what happens when you lose your voice from yelling, or why you shouldn't chase lizards even though its fun). It's on Netflix!

Puffin Rock is about Oona the puffin and her brother baba understanding the environment around them, and understanding each other better. It's on netflix.

Work it Out Wombats is a show about a group of wombats helping each other through various problems and regulating their emotions even when upset, through compassion and thinking of how to fix the problems. Such as when one of the characters lost his stuffie, and his siblings helped him find it again! It reminds me of that one episode of Bluey where Bingo lost her bunny toy and Bluey and Chili helped her find it again.

Peeps Big Wide World is a tv show about Peep the Chicken, Chirp the Cardinal, and Quack the duck exploring the world around them and trying to understand how things work. Not quite from a social sense like Bluey, but there are moments with Chirp having big thoughts about herself and what it means to be herself.

Nothing is quite like Bluey, but these are some kids shows that are calm, and still have that social exploration to it. Lots of kids shows don't have that same thoughtfulness in explaining emotions or thoughts like lots of cartoons. I think it's why I like Bluey, and Trash Truck especially!

i was watching puffin rock with my little sister and i want to marry the narrator. watch one episode, you WILL understand. that man is so goofy and smart and silly and his voice is very nice too

sidenote : it's such a cute show. adding it to octonauts and bluey as the list of kids shows that cheer me up
