The historic Puck Building on Houston and Lafayette. Built in two sections between 1885 and 1893, the red-brick round-arched Romanesque Revival building was designed by Albert Wagner for use as a printing shop. Originally five bays wide, the Lafayette Street side of the building was removed in 1899 when the street was widened, leaving only three bays and an entire new western facade. The building was constructed for the J. Ottmann Lithographic Company, the world’s largest lithographic press works and became the home of Puck Magazine, one of the country’s most famous humor magazines. Above the Lafayette Street entrance and on the northeast corner of the building are two gilded statues of Puck, a near-naked boy in a top-hat derived from the character of the same name in #Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Puck was the first magazine to successfully incorporate full-color #lithography and was printed at the Puck Building until its final issue in 1918. In 1983 the #PuckBuilding was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and given NYC #Landmark designation. In 2011 the current owner #Kushner Properties received approval from the #LandmarksCommission to build six penthouses on top of the building. The same year the bottom three levels were renovated for the #REI flagship store. REI embraced the history of the building and instead of clearing everything out, incorporated many of the relics from the printing business, renewing the historic legacy of the Puck Building. During the renovation REI restored the original chandeliers, cast iron columns and arched ceilings, and repurposed the building’s yellow pine timbers. They also discovered dozens of lithographic tablets (pictured above) dating back to the early 1900s, which are now on display on the second floor along with two nine-ton four foot wide fly wheels, which had powered the printing presses’ steam engines.
