Noah Berlatsky at Public Notice:
Two weeks ago, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was largely unknown nationally. Today, he’s a widely beloved Democratic figure and a leading candidate to become Kamala Harris’s running mate. It’s a startling and disorienting political ascent. How did it happen?
Part of his sudden success is due to Walz himself, whose avuncular charisma plays well on television, and whose strong record in Minnesota gives him a lot of bragging rights. Walz has also benefited, though, from the fact that progressives and the left have settled upon him as a pragmatic compromise. Left presidential preferences over the last decade have been dominated by Bernie Sanders, a unique and to some degree anti-establishment figure who promised to seize the party from its current leadership and turn it into a vehicle for radical change. Walz is a very different politician, and his embrace by progressives suggests a new willingness to work within the Democratic Party. That willingness might translate into more influence within the coalition. It also might signal greater Democratic strength and unity.
Walz’s wins
A lot of Walz’s recent national success is directly the result of the talents of one Tim Walz. Before running for office, Walz spent 24 years in the National Guard and worked as a high school history teacher in Mankato, where he helped form Mankato West’s first Gay-Straight Alliance at a time when LGBT people were marginalized. Walz has a long and impressive record of electoral, personal, and policy successes in Democratic politics. He was elected to Congress from a rural southern Minnesota district in 2006, a year Democrats picked up 30 seats, and was elected freshman class president by his colleagues. His local focus and popularity allowed him to hold the seat through the red waves of 2010 and 2014. Trump won the district by 15 points in 2016. But even then Walz wasn’t dislodged, winning the district by a point. Walz is in fact the only Democrat to win the seat since 1992. Before his 2007-2017 tenure and afterwards, it’s been in GOP hands.
Following his 2016 victory, Walz ran successfully for governor in 2018 and won reelection in 2022. Ahead of his second second term, Democrats won a two-vote Democratic majority in the state House and a one-vote majority in the Senate. That gave them a trifecta and full control of state government for the first time in a decade.
[...]
Progressives for Walz
Walz has also benefited, though, from a swift and unusually coordinated progressive effort to elevate him. To be clear, Walz is popular within the party. However, many progressive pundits and activists with large platforms have been especially enthusiastic about his candidacy. Gun control proponent David Hogg has been promoting Walz relentlessly; so has left journalist Mehdi Hasan; so has YouTube influencer Kyle Kuczynski.
Noah Berlatsky wrote in Public Notice about how Tim Walz makes a lot of sense as Kamala Harris’s running mate.

"The US did have a national universal free school lunch program during the height of the pandemic. In the 2021-2022 school year, some 16.5 million children received free school meals. When the program lapsed, that number decreased by 1.2 million, or 7.7 percent."
My kid was one of those. My partner was let go from his job of 16 years in the fall of 2020. A lot of means-tested programs determine eligibility based on your previous year's tax returns. On paper, we looked fine. In reality, we had no income.
There are ways to appeal and we likely could have gotten enrolled in a free- or reduced-cost meal plan, but the universal program meant we didn't have to. We were saved the paperwork and red tape and headache. And that is fucking priceless.
Of course, the GOP will whine and groan and gnash their MAGA molars. They will insist that tax cuts for billionaires is more important than food for hungry children. They’ll rush to fight the overwhelmingly popular school lunch program. They’ll rush to fight the overwhelmingly popular policy of soaking the rich. Democrats should encourage them to do that. Universal school meals is a good policy for kids, a financially sound investment, and an overwhelmingly popular program. It will excite the Democratic base; it will underline that Republicans are horrible. And it’s a program already closely associated with the Democratic ticket thanks to Walz. It would be an organic commitment born of passion and very hard to pillory as a cynical political calculation. If Harris is looking for signature policy platforms, she — and hungry children across the country — couldn’t do much better. “Just feed our children” is a good campaign slogan and good policy too.

How to Advertise a Public Notice: A Step-by-Step Guide
Are you wondering how to effectively place public information ads in newspapers especially in a busy city like Mumbai? Whether you’re dealing with foreclosures, government contracts, permits, or other important matters, it’s important to get your message across clearly and quickly. In this blog we’ll walk you through the process of publishing public information advertising to ensure that it reaches the intended audience successfully.
Stepwise Procedure to Place Legal Notice Ads in Newspapers
Statutory notices, also known as public notices, are published to inform the public of important matters that may affect communities. Such articles are often published in paid newspapers, making it necessary to follow specific guidelines to ensure accurate and timely distribution
Simple Steps to Place a Legal Notice Ad in a Newspaper
Although it may seem daunting, placing a legal information ad in the newspaper is easy if you follow these steps.
1. Identify the Target Region:
Identify the location of the public notice. This could be a specific city, a specific city, or even an entire country. If the information is of national importance, choose a nationwide newspaper distribution system.
2. Choose a Newspaper:
Choose a newspaper that has a good readership in the area you want to visit. You can approach companies that specialize in placing legal advertisements in newspapers
3. Draft the Content:
Follow the specific instructions provided by the newspaper or agency for formatting your ad. The content is clear, concise, and includes all the necessary information make sure. You can use abbreviations to reduce the number of words if necessary.
4. Select Publication Dates:
Decide on the date you want your content to be published. To get the information to the public as quickly as possible, timing is essential.
5. Request a Quote:
The cost of running ads will depend on how long your content runs and how long you run. Ask for a quote from a newspaper or company.
6. Finalize the Deal:
If the quote fits your budget, submit your request for the ad to be published. Ask to see how the ad would look in the newspaper, to ensure accuracy.
7. Obtain Tear Sheets:
After the ad runs, ask for tears as proof of disclosure. This can be useful for record keeping and any future use.
Conclusion:
Publishing a public advertisement in a newspaper does not have to be a daunting task. By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your legal content reaches the right audience effectively. Remember, the key is to choose a reputable newspaper, write clear articles and publish the articles in a timely manner. If you have any additional questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out.
Stay tuned to our blog for detailed instructions on placing legal news ads in the newspaper and we will help you navigate the process smoothly.

Noah Berlatsky at Public Notice:
The Republican-controlled House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday held a lengthy oversight hearing to badger Attorney General Merrick Garland and push the GOP’s false narrative about President Biden weaponizing the DOJ against Donald Trump. Even though the hearing was conducted in obvious bad faith, it was in some ways successful, at least in the limited sense that Republicans grabbed a lot of headlines and forced Garland to spend a day on the defensive. Virtually every major news outlet it extensive coverage, ranging from the New York Times to MSNBC to Newsmax.
The hearing meant that for at least a day, everyone talked about whether the DOJ is treating Trump unfairly, rather than about, say, whether Trump should step aside from the GOP presidential nomination given his felony convictions, or whether Supreme Court Justice Sam Alito should recuse himself after an insurrectionist flag was flown over his house. Congressional oversight hearings give Congress a chance to focus the national conversation on what members want to talk about. It gives them a chance to pressure executive branch officials to adopt congressional priorities, or to explain and potentially embarrass themselves. In contrast, Democrats in the Senate have been bizarrely reluctant to use hearings to advance their agenda. Dick Durbin, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has refused to hold hearings to investigate egregious evidence of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas receiving gifts from far right billionaires, or to demand answers from Alito about his apparent embrace of the insurrection. Instead, he’s posting weak statements on social media meekly calling for right-wing members of the Court to do a better job policing themselves. [...]
Senate Democrats need to get a clue
Democrats have of course decried the House hearings on Garland as nakedly partisan nonsense. Garland himself pushed back forcefully against (baseless) Republican claims that the Justice Department had somehow been behind the successful New York state prosecution of Trump on charges of falsifying business records related to hush money payments. Garland described the claim the Justice Department was involved as a “conspiracy theory” and an “attack on the judicial process itself.” Forceful rejection of Republican lies is a good thing. But there are limits to playing defense. And Democrats have good reason to launch their own judicial investigations not of the Biden Justice Department, but of the Supreme Court. This year, after an extensive investigation, ProPublica determined that Clarence Thomas has for 20 years received lavish gifts, including vacations and loans, from billionaire Republican donors like Harlan Crow. More recently, the New York Times reported that in the days after the January 6 insurrection, an upside-down flag — a symbol of support for Trump’s coup attempt — was raised over the home of Justice Samuel Alito.
Thomas and Alito have shown clear evidence of corruption and/or bias. The Senate Judiciary Committee is supposed to provide oversight for the judiciary and monitor ethical standards and practices. This seems like a great opportunity to hold hearings on the far right Court and demand accountability. Or so you’d think. Durbin has been weirdly but consistently timid. He has not called Thomas to appear before the Judiciary Committee, claiming that Thomas would just refuse to show up. In the case of Alito, Durbin has called on him to recuse himself from cases involving Trump and the 2020 election — including the Court’s current case on whether Trump has immunity from prosecution from his role in January 6. But Alito has refused to recuse, and Chief Justice John Roberts refuses to meet with Durbin and his committee to discuss the matter. The Court has also failed to adopt even the minimal toothless, unenforceable ethics standards that Durbin has been haplessly pushing for years. So, if Alito and Roberts say they won’t cooperate, is that that?
Of course not. Congress has a lot of power. Durbin could subpoena Alito and Thomas and threaten to hold them in contempt if they don’t appear at hearings, just as the House has threatened to hold Garland in contempt. The spectacle of Supreme Court justices lawlessly rejecting subpoenas to even talk to Congress would in itself be a huge story. It would generate media headlines and bringing pressure to bear on Thomas and Alito to recuse themselves from cases involving Trump. The Senate Judiciary Committee could also subpoena others involved in undermining the integrity of the court. The committee has actually approved subpoenas for Harlan Crow and Leonard Leo, key figures in the Thomas bribery scandal. But Durbin has refused to issue those subpoenas, for unclear reasons. Similarly, the Senate Judiciary Committee could hold hearings on the insurrectionist flags flying outside Alito’s home (yes, there was more than one). Alito claims his wife was responsible for the flags, and he himself had nothing to do with them. The committee could call Alito’s wife, Martha Ann, and ask her to explain why she flew the flag and explain the justice’s involvement. [...]
Why won’t Durbin act?
The advantages of using the power of the Senate, including hearings and subpoenas, is pretty clear. Alito and Thomas have shown themselves to be corrupt, biased, and arrogant. Despite massive conflicts of interest, they refuse to recuse themselves, much less resign. That undermines the integrity of the Court, undermines the rule of law, and threatens the Constitution and democracy itself. If there was ever a case for oversight, this is it. And oversight can be effective. Focusing the media on a huge scandal can lead to more reporting, more revelations, more public pressure, and political gain. The threat of subpoenas, and the exposure of hearings, can force justices to look for ways to defuse criticism — and recusing from cases where they are compromised is a pretty obvious step. Durbin’s sad tactic of just begging the justices to do better has not worked. Why won’t he use the tools he has? It’s unclear; his explanations (like arguing Thomas wouldn’t show up anyway) don’t make a lot of sense. Maybe he’s conflict averse. Maybe he’s leery of undermining the legitimacy of the court. Maybe he’s afraid of GOP backlash.
This Noah Berlatsky column in Public Notice is 100% spot-on: Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin needs to stop acting like a potted plant and start conducting hearings into SCOTUS Justice Samuel Alito’s compromised ethics. It is time for the Democrats to play on offense instead of being perpetually on defense.

Trump, of course, spends time with vicious bigots all the time, including when he’s hanging out by himself. Even by MAGA standards, though, Loomer is a disturbing and disgusting specimen — so much so that even Republican leaders and Trump loyalists have publicly urged the former president to distance himself from her. Loomer’s constant and still unexplained presence by Trump’s side underlines his fascism, his poor judgement, and his manifest unfitness for office. The thought of a Trump presidency is terrifying for many reasons. But no one prepared to listen to advice from Laura Loomer should be elected to a water reclamation district board, much less to the presidency of the United States. ... Trump seems to have first become close with Loomer in early 2023. In April of that year, he tried to hire her as a campaign advisor; staff pushed back and managed to keep her from getting an official role and salary. Trump praised her in a video of her visit to his golf course, however, calling her “terrific” and “very special” and adding, “You are a very opinionated lady, I have to tell you. And in my opinion, I like that.” (Again, Loomer’s opinions include support for a white ethnostate.) Trump’s also praised Loomer at rallies, calling her “a very important person, politically” and “a woman with courage.” He’s shared posts by Loomer on his far right social network Truth Social.
Whatever the exact nature of the tie between Trump and Loomer, though, it’s clear that she has access to him. And that has made Republicans very nervous. Loomer demonstrated last week that Republican fears were justified. On social media, she posted that if Harris wins the presidency, “the White House will smell like curry & White House speeches will be facilitated via a call center and the American people will only be able to convey their feedback through a customer satisfaction survey at the end of the call that nobody will understand.” Loomer’s comments were so egregiously racist that even MAGA recoiled — or, alternately, they were an excuse for some in the GOP to try to pry her away from the former president. Either way, numerous Republican leaders denounced her. Extreme MAGA loon and Trump ally Marjorie Taylor Greene (she of the “Jewish space lasers”) killed irony by calling Loomer “appalling and extremely racist.” Lindsey Graham and Thom Tillis also denounced Loomer’s remarks, as did Trump’s running mate JD Vance. ... Obviously, it’s embarrassing for Trump that he has chosen Loomer, white nationalist free spirit, as his personal muse and emotional support Nazi. But how much difference does it really make? After all, Trump is a vicious bigot and conspiracy theorist himself. ... Nonetheless, having someone as hateful as Loomer so close to Trump is disturbing and dangerous. Trump is notoriously easy to influence. He has no knowledge of and very little interest in policy and a bottomless need for flattery. As a result, as many analysts have pointed out, he tends to adopt the opinions of whoever spoke to him last. ... Loomer appears to have unencumbered access and to be the person who Trump turns to for emergency flattery and puffery and emotional support, whether following assassination attempts or before big debates. The person Trump wants to be close to, the person he trusts, is a white nationalist conspiracy theorist with less self control, less discipline, and more enthusiasm for hate than even Trump himself, if such a thing is possible.

The terrible work and conditions for women and children working underground came to public notice after an accident at Huskar Colliery near Barnsley in 1838, when 26 children (11 girls) were drowned while working. An inquiry reporting on the conditions made the point that women stripped naked to the waist to work in the heat of the mines and wore trousers for the heavy work. This was as shocking to the elite as the danger of the job.
