Public domain avengers type of story where a lot of famous literature characthers are actually a part of a mysterious vampire clan (and deeply belive their transformatiom has to have something to do with their literaly fame - with the exception of the couples Carmilla and her Laura and Jonathan and Mina Haker who just happen to exist in a vampite story).
Sherlock Holmes is not really their leader but is the only one still trying to investigate the turning conspiracy (with the help of vampire John Watson) while solving more general mysteries and everyone really respects him for it. They don't hate Connan Doyle (he was John's editor in this world and hated the books because he kept trying to make clear he was just an editor and read my real books and no one listened) but they deeply dislike the Doyle state.
Now they have the sexy, sweetheart of the group Dorian Gray. And while he is waay less of a dick than his literary persona, vampire Dorian Gray just makes so much sense no one really asks anything. I mean the story about a corrupted man that doesn't get old and how this leads him to his ruin? Very vampire coded. Except years and years later they are having a discussion about their "authors" and someone asks him why Wilde wrote him as such a dick and how they had met and he says he never met him and he actually is a trans guy from the 1920's that loved Wilde's work, had an emo/edgy phase and his surname happened to be Gray so it was all too perfect in his younger mind and he named himself after Dorian. He assumed everyone knew he was not actually the characther. Since he was in the clan for a long time and everyone liked him he remains in the group still as their only not actually a public domain characther.
They later discover that there is an actual vampire Dorian who just didn't want to join tbem before and so never crossed their path but he is a dick and they already have their Dorian quota so he isn't invited and he is very bitter over it. Might turn to whoever ends up beig the villain as revenge.

22 Alternate Reinterpretations of Partially Public Domain Characters
For when "horror monster" is too obvious. As the public domain catches up with more and more of our media darlings' most inaccessible and irrelevant iterations, some variety is in order. Any B-to-D grade movie, game, tv or quick-service-restaurant style-studio/entity/cabal is welcome to use these as jumping off points.
Reinterpretation is the 'true story' that it is implied the still-in-copyright-media-franchise is based on, used as vehicle to criticize/parody megacorp owners through their supposed revisions.
Your collection of Public Domain players go all "Muppets _____" on an unrelated story.
They're furries now (The "Disney's Robin Hood")
It's a monster movie, but a kaiju monster movie.
Rock opera.
The Shonen or Shojo reboot.
We aren't doin' the 'and zombies' or 'vampire hunter' thing anymore? When did that stop?
Similar story, completely different historical time/setting.
Jason and the Argonauts, the public domain character(s) are there. The Argo was the ancient Greek Avengers and also your grandpa was there, so this one's actually like, literary.
Retired 1920s toon becomes livestreamer/tiktoker/whatever in misguided avenue to relevancy.
They're brand-safe pocket monsters.
They're exactly the same, the world is contemporary around them (ala Brady Bunch movie)
Straight-faced monsterfucker romance w' public domain character in the sexy fishman role.
Surreal office comedy.
The Next Generation AKA they have kids.
The Preadolescent Prequel, AKA they ARE kids.
Rule 63, all female, all male, all capybara, etc, reinterpretation.
90s XTREME retro style.
The Inappropriate Saturday Morning Cartoon Adaptation (Gatsby and Pals!)
Nigh-insufferable yet undeniably interesting Grant Morrison-y meta-fictional fantasy take.
... in space!
22. Full 1950s style musical with showgirls*.
*non-negotiable.

Copyright Smuggling: The Amazing Digital Circus
Often i just like taking a thing and figuring out public domain equivalence. Mostly just for fun and to showcase more public domain characters like I've done with The Avengers and Doctor Who
Ragatha - Clearly inspired by Raggedy Ann who is public domain
[ID: Image of a light browing plush doll in a flowery dress holding flowers using her dress. her hair is noodle and rope like and red END ID]
Kinger - Chess pieces are not bound by any copyright.
Jax - Theres no shortage of public domain bunny characters but I'm gonna go with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit
[ID: Image of a black and white cartoon rabbit END ID]
Gangle: Gangle is based on the Comedy and Tragedy masks from ancient greece, which are not copyrighted
Zooble: Equivalent would be Mr.Potatohead
The copyrights for the original Mr. Potato Head were not renewed in 1980 after they had expired. While still trademarked and later versions arent public domain the above version is, you can swap out their parts if you so like or rename them.
Pomni - The Joker playing card
Caine - Obviously Cain from the Bible but also just the concept of an artificial intelligence really doesn't belong to anyone
Bubble - Soap bubble with teeth, go nuts i guess just eh design it differently.

Tumblr has a few really specific ideas of what should be the next Muppet movie (all good ones!) but I think we need to go further afield. Some Muppet adaptations I'd recommend:
James Bond - human villain
All For the Game - make the coach the only human
The OJ Simpson trial - human Judge Ito
The Avengers - keep Sam Jackson; Swedish Chef as Loki, bc Scandinavia is interchangeable
The Great Gatsby - Gonzo as Gatsby (I've posted this before I know)
We Have Always Lived in the Castle - human cousin Charles
How has their not been a Muppet Sherlock Holmes with a patient Muppet Sherlock explaining Muppet logic to a human Watson (there was a comic tho). Especially now they respecting women is in the public domain

I would like to recommend a monster lover film called "Lady Frankenstein". The main character is Dr. Tania Frankenstein, daughter of Baron Frankenstein. She is fascinated by her father's work. When the Baron's monster kills him and escapes, she works with her father's assistant, Dr. Marshall, to put Marshall's brain into a perfect body. That way she makes a creature that can avenge her father and satisfy her. This film seems to be in the public domain and is readily available on youtube. The 99 minute version is the best cut.
I will keep that in mind I really want to see it but I promised a friend i'd watch it with her so i am bound to that :3

0121: Doctor Strange (vol. 2) #2
Cover Date: August 1974 On-Sale Date: May 14, 1974
And we're back to Doc's solo efforts (sort of.) It's a relief after that tiresome Giant Defenders issue with all those reprints. Well, the Defenders (sort of) guest star here as well. We're in for quite the whacko adventure.
Our splash page begins with the starling image of Silver Dagger decapitating Doc.
We quickly discover this is just a mannequin of Doc. Our Doc is still alive inside the Orb of Agamotto being tormented obstructed by that world's unreal inhabitants. The decapitation is just a stunt in Dagger's attempt to brainwash her and convert her to his religion which we will later learn is Catholicism. This sounds like the most realistic part of a comic book ever. Dagger claims to loathe using magic to get rid of magic, but it's his calling!
It appears he's done this before. Maybe someone will consider a Silver Dagger: The Early Years limited series and show us these earlier conversions. Dagger leaves Clea alone for a bit and uses the All-Purpose Amulet to show him Doc's corpse and discovering that his victim is still alive. Uh oh!
This provides a convenient segue back to that crazy Orb world where Doc is a bit discombobulated. Doc gets contemplative and philosophical. He attempts to mediate and orient himself which attracts something called a soul eater. It attempts to suck out Doc's ghost form. The attempt succeeds.
Doc is drawn into the soul eater's maw but sees a flash of silver as he's being devoured. It's the Silver Surfer, or something that looks like him, at least.
Doc encounters a bunch of other souls that have been incorporated into the soul eaters innards. Doc has no intention of ending like this. He flies to the creatures brain and works some shenanigans.
The creature "freaks out" (in Doc's own words) and as it crashes all its victims go free. Cool!
Doc and the Surfer chat. Surfer reveals that he's not the genuine article and is just part of the realm. Therefore he can't help Doc find the out door. Doc then remembers he has a physical body which has gone AWOL. Surfer points out that it walked to a nearby castle. It's not supposed to do that when Doc's ghost ain't home! The pair go to the castle which looks familiar (to me, not them.)
Inside, neither He-Man nor the Sorceress are home. Instead they find a bunch of heroes getting drunk. Around the table are his fellow Defenders, Spider-Man, a couple of Avengers, Nick Fury and public domain superhero from the 1930s, Captain Midnight. Doc's body is sitting politely at the head of the table while, next to him, the Hulk is getting angry because Doc won't talk. We know these aren't the genuine articles because Namor isn't being an angry drama queen. Frank gives us a lovely two page spread that's a bit of levity in this rather dark tale.
Doc rejoins his body and bids his ersatz fellow heroes farewell when another reveler arrives, whom the crowd address as The Queen. The Queen turns out to be an ersatz Valkyrie astride her winged horse, Aragorn.
Queen Valkyrie asks Sir Hulk who is the stranger? Hulk doesn't know but wants him to stay for tea. Doc, not wanting to tarry further as he needs to rescue Clea in the real world, declines. Perhaps he should have done it more politely as this is the reaction:
Doc has greatly softened in the decade since he was introduced, but when he's on a mission the arrogant jerk can rear its ugly head. Perhaps the knowledge that these dudes aren't real helps, but Doc makes short work of the gang.
Hulk manages to just get angrier, grabs Doc and pummels the heck out of him. But it wasn't really Doc, just an illusion. Seems an apt plan considering where he is. Revived, the entire gang comes for him again. And again he rebuffs them.
Yup! Arrogant. But powerful! The soul eater returns and Doc is about to protect the unconscious ersatz heroes when we see that Valkyrie and Silver Surfer are still awake. They explain he doesn't need to worry about the soul eater. They have no souls for it to consume! How logical in this unreal place! Doc then has the epiphany that his real foe is:
Doc realizes that he didn't escape death, he merely postponed it. He must get to the center of the Orb. Valyrie/The Queen offers him her unreal version of Aragorn who now knows how to get to the center. Doc flies off and we return to reality where Dagger has been peeping in on Doc and showing Clea to make her lose hope.
Whoa! So much going on here and Frank Brunner's art is simply wonderful. It must have been a joy to illustrate such fantastic weirdness. Yes, I'm gushing a bit. I love this arc and we're right in the thick of it. Our newly minted sorcerer supreme is thrust into a situation that probably of none of his predecessors have dealt with and has ever-mounting uncertainty. And he's got his lady friend to worry about so he really can't waste a lot of time.
As we've progressed, Englehart has improved Doc's speech to something less stilted and more formal. He knows Doc is somewhat cut off from pop culture and will have a more formal way of speaking, but not like a soap opera where everything ends in an exclamation point!
This arc gives us Doc as an explorer of the unknown. Englehart handles it well by having Doc handle it well.
The next issue tag is a bit of a lie. The next issue is reprints, but issue four will fulfil it's promise.

Headcanon that one of the Avengers, upon it entering public domain as of yesterday, gives Steve and Bucky a copy/reprint/whatever of the first Buck Rogers comic They both roll their eyes because yeah we get it it's a pun. Then proceed to read that comic the way they woulda as children. It's hard to find something out of their time that still feels like it did back then but this does and it makes for a great evening of checking out what else they remember is now public domain

1942 public domain werewolf movie
A mad scientist changes his simple-minded handyman into a werewolf in order to prove his supposedly crazy scientific theories - and exact revenge.
Edit:
There's a few flashing lights in the final I think 3 minutes of the film.
Unlike with modern films, it's not on purpose. Lightning strikes the house and a room catches on fire. They seem to be using real fire, and the comparative brightness of it makes the camera have trouble focusing on the darker areas and causes some flashes, but not a lot.
Also, the subtitles here are wrong on at least 3 occasions. Also the audio in general is very bad and quiet:
I forgot the first time the subtitles were wrong but the other ones were:
subtitles, paraphrased: to whom do I owe the honor?
what he actually said, paraphrased: What's with all the armament?
subtitles, paraphrased: You've been a good daughter
what he actually said, paraphrased: You've been a great comfort (to me?).

I will never forget how a week or so ago I was looking for people's suggestions over how they would make their own League of Extraordinary Geentleman cause I love the idea of Public Domain Avengers even if not the way it was done.
And someone goes, well Dorian Gray, and like yeah, he is in the original and while I don't like how he is portrait it was a solid choice just like Mina. And I really liked what they changed about Dorian on their version compred to the LoEG Dorian.
But then when listing the villains for SOME REASON one of the tragic villains that is not the main villain but we think it is in the first arc is OSCAR WILDE. And he has no connection to Dorian. He also is like the only author involved. All the other villains and heros were public domain. I don't even remember if there was any other historical figure even. And I cannot stop thinking about it, is driving me insane.

Lilyana (II)

Hey everyone! I'm back and feeling better! 💖 I am here to share a second drawing of Lilyana, singing. I think it's about time I share her backstory. Beware, this is going to be a long read. 📖☕
Lilyana Aretha Napoles is a character I made for a Sci-fi RP with @Mamsey . She was born in the capital city of Khose, from a small planet called Accilles— which is located three worlds away from the primary globe. She was raised as an only child in a family that reached the noble status shortly before her birth. Her father worked as a politician and her mother was a socialite. At the age of four, they moved to Ziherilia, the main planet and the Emperor's domain. Lilyana was raised in luxury and privilege. However, her parents were strict and educated her in politesse. From a young age, her singing talent manifested. She was taught and praised by her teachers for her voice. She seldom knew of hardships or what occurred beyond high society. That was, until Frederika disappeared.
Frederika was Lilyana's childhood friend and the child of her mother's abigail. Despite their social differences, the two girls got along together and behaved like sisters. In their sixteen years, a conflict broke out in Yulea, her friend's home planet. Not long after, she and her mother vanished. When questioned about their whereabouts, the nobility had to take a vow of silence by order of the Bureau of Principal Legitimacy (which are more or less the equivalent of the Thought Police in 1984). No one could question, speak about the women, or the planet itself. Yet Lilyana became restless and tried to uncover the mystery of Frederika's disappearance. After furtive attempts and risky bypassing, the truth turned out to be much darker and disturbing than she could imagine.
An insurrection took place in Yulea against the Ziherilia, which was quickly and violently put to an end. The planet became a slave labor camp with a high mortality rate. All Yuleans royalty were imprisoned and potentially executed. The Bureau of Principal Legitimacy had changed the entirety of its history, erased any traces of a revolt occurring, and wiped out important names from the Counsel. It had been done throughout the Emperor's rule. Whenever there was opposition, the Bureau was there to intervene. No one was safe from its scrutiny. Discovering and unveiling secrets was considered traitorous and carried a severe penance.
From then on, Lilyana had sworn to avenge Frederika. She joined the revolutionary group behind closed doors— whose locations varied from planet to planet and its members belonged in different social statuses. A decision that would forever change her life. In the meantime, as the years went on, she cultivated her talent in a regime where music was restricted. She became favorable not only to the ruling class, but also to the common folk. As she gained attention from the Emperor, she was allowed to perform for the people. She carefully introduced herself to politics in order to work in favor with the public— thus cementing her status as a lady.
Currently, she is working covertly as both the intermediary and agent for the Rebellion while establishing her influence among the court and the Counsel. At the same time, she is a prominent singer. She tasks in growing her reputation and the forces of the other side while avoiding the jaws of the Bureau. Particularly its leader (which is @Mamsey 's character).
__________________
Personality-wise: Refined and serene, Lilyana is described to be a cold jewel. Despite her congeniality, she maintains distance from people and avoids deeper relationships. As a result, there is an air of mystery around her persona. She would rather be addressed by her second name instead of her first. When it comes to diplomacy, she is silver-tongued and gracious. In truth, she holds passion for her beliefs and justice. She tries to resolve conflicts in her best judgment and help all those in need. However, because of her allegiance with the Rebellion, she is secretive and can be deceitful to anyone. Even those from her same class or higher. The young woman is aware of the consequences of her actions, yet she tries to remain as undaunted as possible.
_____________________
If you made it this far, thank you so much for reading! 🥹 Lilyana is my new favorite child to draw (I have no preferences, though). I have a couple of WIPs of her that I plan to post soon.
Also, I haven't done this in a while, but if you like my art and wish to see more, consider supporting me on Ko-fi! 🙏🏼💖

Redesigning Public Domain Characters: Micro-Face

"Tom Wood was a factory worker and a failed inventor. When his brother, Jim, was killed by Big Boston's gangsters, Tom promised to avenge Jim's death so invented a "Micro-Mask" - a full-face mask that contained a built-in microphone (which allowed hm to amplify and throw his voice), a hearing amplifier, and "photoelectric lenses" that gave him x-ray vision. He could also attach telephone wires to his mask to make phone calls. Tom offered the invention to the U.S. government, only to be turned down. Regardless, he used it to become "Micro-Face!""
This backstory ultimately works pretty well, however there is a few things I'd change overall for some ideas I had.
-Big Boston is no-longer the big boss head honcho gangster, atleast at the time of Jim's death. Maybe he can try to strike out on his own later. Instead, Boston works for another gangster known as Hammerfist, essentially acting as an enforcer for him.
Note- Hammerfist is a mobster character from an entirely different Public Domain comic called "The Target" from Target Comics. Figured I'd sorta consolidate these a bit since they're all on the same world in this version of events.
-Micro-Face is absolutely more of a stealthy hero than "beat people up". He strives to cause trouble and retrieve important information from the inside. He can still fight, but he mainly plays mindgames and stuff like that.
-The Micro-Mask was something Tom and Jim made together, with Jim having a few of the ideas to help make it better. This means that Tom donning it to stop the gangsters is him using him and his brother's efforts combined.

The Oracle of Nineveh
1 The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
2 A jealous and avenging God is Jehovah: an avenger is Jehovah, and full of fury: Jehovah taketh vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
3 Jehovah is slow to anger, and great in power, and doth not at all clear the guilty: Jehovah, his way is in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
4 He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.
5 The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt, and the earth is upheaved at his presence, and the world, and all that dwell therein.
6 Who shall stand before his indignation? and who shall abide in the fierceness of his anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken asunder by him.
7 Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
8 But with an overrunning flood he will make a full end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
9 What do ye imagine against Jehovah? He will make a full end: trouble shall not rise up the second time.
10 Though they be tangled together as thorns, and be as drenched from their drink, they shall be devoured as dry stubble, completely.
11 Out of thee is gone forth one that imagineth evil against Jehovah, a wicked counsellor.
12 Thus saith Jehovah: Though they be complete in number, and many as they be, even so shall they be cut down, and he shall pass away; and though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.
13 And now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds asunder.
14 And Jehovah hath given commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy god will I cut off the graven image, and the molten image: I will prepare thy grave; for thou art vile.
15 Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth glad tidings, that publisheth peace! Celebrate thy feasts, Judah, perform thy vows: for the wicked one shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off. — Nahum 1 | Literal Emphasis Translation (LET) The Literal Emphasis Bible is in the public domain. A Study in Scarlet

After reading the story I have discovered that the original story I read was the abridged version. I think some details were lost that should not have been.
It's passe to explain the idea of Sherlock Holmes; that famous detective is entirely in the public domain, and the idea of a fictional detective usually derives in some way from that smoking man in the sitting room. But in our haste to subvert, parody, deconstruct or modernize the tropes found in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories, we must not forget that the original stories are, on the whole, quite good. Mostly.
A Study in Scarlet remains as I remember it. Though I will admit it's a bizarre introduction to the detective, where something like half to two thirds of it is the detective story and the rest is about the Avenging Angels, Mormonism, and revenge. Indeed, there's almost a political angle in this book about the lifestyles and behaviors of the LDS church as a whole, and though it is certainly not a flattering portrayal, having made some study of the origins of Mormonism it does not feel entirely inaccurate to me. Certainly they never had anything as extensive or frightening as the secret society described in this book, but then social pressures can be quite powerful and do the dirty work for the elites. I believe the Avenging Angels were not in the abridged version that I read, which is a shame because of this paints an entirely different picture of Mormon society to have secret police already set up, and to have that scoundrel and bastard Brigham Young as a part of it.
But beyond that even Sherlock Holmes himself says that this mystery is not exactly mysterious. The final two pages of my special edition are concerned with explaining the mystery, and it turns out to be a simple thing with a complicated and tragic origin.
On the one hand, it doesn't quite set the tone for the other stories. Those mysteries have something of the strange or unusual to them, something for Holmes to unravel after a nicotine induced meditation.
On the other hand, starting with a simple mystery is, I believe, the best way to introduce Sherlock Holmes' detective skills, a sense of justice, his cleverness, and also his pride, which, though it is not fatal, is often his shortcoming. We get a full picture of the detective and what stories about him will entail, and it's no surprise that people wanted more of this character after Doyle wrote the story as a one-off.
The book may be long for what it is: it's a simple mystery with the steps laid out for you to follow the solving thereof. But I cannot argue that it is not an intriguing and persuasive pilot that will have me calling on 221B Baker Street again quite soon.
I'll be posting my thoughts on the further stories of the detective as I go along. Doubtless my next update on this should be sooner rather than later; the stories from the Strand Magazine tend to be shorter, less time for me to read.
Side note: the original version I read had pictures. I do not need pictures to read but I liked the illustrations quite a bit, and I'm sad that the special edition I have, while pretty, does not have those illustrations. Quite unfortunate.
