my journey to breaking the silence on mental health
when i first started treatment at 17, i felt a mix of shame and fear. i didn’t want anyone to know i was seeking help because i thought it meant i was weak or broken. society taught me that mental health struggles were something to hide, and for a long time, i believed that. walking into that first therapy session felt like stepping into a spotlight, exposing all the things i had worked so hard to keep hidden. but as terrifying as it was, it also marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life—a chapter where i started to prioritize my wellbeing. if you’re feeling that fear of taking the first step, i want you to know that it’s okay to feel scared. healing is unfamiliar territory, but it’s worth exploring. the first step might be the hardest, but it’s also the most transformative.
for years, i kept my struggles to myself. i convinced myself that if i ignored the pain long enough, it would go away. but the silence only made it worse. i turned to harmful coping mechanisms like self-harm and substance abuse to numb the emotions i didn’t know how to process. the stigma surrounding mental health made it even harder to speak up—i didn’t want to be judged or seen as less capable. looking back, i realize how much harm that silence caused. if you’re struggling in silence right now, i want you to know that your voice matters. speaking up doesn’t mean you’re seeking attention or being dramatic; it means you’re advocating for your own well-being. mental health is just as important as physical health, and it’s time we start treating it that way. breaking the silence is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself.
starting treatment was a rollercoaster of emotions. there were moments of hope, like when a therapist truly understood me or when i learned tools to cope with my emotions in healthier ways. but there were also moments of deep frustration and pain. one of the hardest experiences i faced was patient abuse in a treatment facility. it left me questioning whether i deserved help or if healing was even possible. that experience was traumatizing, but it also taught me an important lesson: not all treatment environments are right for everyone, and that’s okay. if you’ve had a negative experience, it doesn’t mean help isn’t out there—it just means you might need to keep looking. advocating for yourself and finding the right support system is crucial. healing isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey, and it’s okay to seek the care that truly works for you.
i can’t emphasize enough how important a support system is when navigating mental health challenges. during some of my darkest moments, i was lucky to have people who reminded me that i wasn’t alone. they didn’t always have the answers, but their presence was enough to keep me grounded. whether it was a friend who sent a quick text to check in or a family member who listened without judgment, their support made all the difference. if you’re struggling, i encourage you to reach out to someone you trust. and if you feel like you don’t have anyone, know that support groups, hotlines, and online communities exist to help you. surrounding yourself with people who care can be the foundation you need to build a healthier, more stable life.
there were times when i felt like giving up. the weight of my emotions and the setbacks i faced made it hard to see a way forward. i’d fall into patterns of self-sabotage, convinced that i wasn’t worth the effort it took to heal. but over time, i learned that those thoughts, as overwhelming as they felt, weren’t the truth. i started challenging them with small acts of self-care—choosing to eat a nourishing meal, going for a short walk, or simply allowing myself to rest without guilt. if you find yourself battling self-sabotage, i encourage you to start with one small step. remind yourself that healing isn’t about being perfect; it’s about progress. every step forward, no matter how small, is a victory.
for the longest time, i thought strength meant keeping everything together and pretending to be fine. but i’ve learned that real strength comes from vulnerability. admitting that i needed help was one of the hardest things i’ve ever done, but it was also one of the bravest. strength isn’t about never struggling—it’s about choosing to keep going despite the struggle. if you’ve been taught that asking for help makes you weak, i want you to challenge that belief. seeking help is an act of courage, and it’s a sign that you’re taking your wellbeing seriously. you deserve the same care and attention you’d give to someone else in your position.
stigma is one of the biggest barriers to healing. it creates fear and shame, making it harder for people to seek help. i’ve experienced this firsthand—there were times when i felt like admitting i had mental health struggles would make people see me differently, as if my challenges defined me. but the truth is, mental health struggles are just as valid as physical health issues. we don’t shame someone for seeking treatment for a broken arm or diabetes, so why do we shame people for seeking help for depression or anxiety? if we want to create a world where everyone feels safe to speak up, we need to challenge the stigma. it starts with conversations like this, where we normalize the fact that mental health is health.
one of my biggest goals is to create a space where people feel safe to share their stories without fear of judgment. i know how isolating it can feel to go through this journey alone, and i don’t want anyone else to feel that way. a supportive community can be a lifeline—it reminds us that we’re not alone, that our struggles are valid, and that healing is possible. whether it’s through this blog, my podcast, or other platforms, i’m committed to creating a space where everyone feels seen and heard. your voice matters, and your story has the power to inspire others. together, we can build a community that supports and uplifts one another.

This is a question for people who have been treated for OCD. It's behind a cut so you can choose whether or not to engage with it, but basically I'm asking about potential treatments for my own case.
If you have a case and were treated for it in some way...exposure therapy, CBT, anything:
What treatments were you given? Did they work? How well? Was there something that worked but only one element of it did? Or did something unexpected happen? Did it just not work and completely suck?
I know treatment for OCD is supposed to be uncomfortable--they're getting you used to doing a thing you very much don't want to do--but I'm reading up on exposure therapy and so much of it seems to be about showing nOtHiNg BaD iS hApPeNiNg which...yes, duh, I know that, I know full well this is an irrationality and nothing is going to happen, that's a major factor in why it is driving me crazy. Reading some of this is making me wonder if the people writing these articles actually understand OCD. So I want to ask other people who have it.
Basically, my case eased up significantly at one point in my life that I've always just attributed to finding the right combo of meds (although in perfect honesty I'm wondering these days if other factors might have been at play. Regardless, it's barely noticeable now). The few compulsions that have persisted, I've just basically tolerated and I've been able to work around them for years. It's getting old, though, because they hold me back from a lot of things I'd like to try and fixing them or reducing them would make following several of my passions so, so much easier. I want to know what treatment options are out there, what they're like, and how they've gone for different people.
Honestly, I'm also worried that trying an incompatible method or trying it the wrong way could make things worse--that's happened to me before--and while I do expect it to be difficult and unpleasant, I'm basically trying to avoid additional trauma that could just cement these compulsions or give me new ones on top of them. I'm good at knowing my own mind and what is likely to work for me and what isn't, but I need to know what's out there and I want to hear from others how your experiences went.

OCD takes so many weird forms, and in mental health spaces, everyone's experiences are so individualized that it's impossible to predict everything that will trigger anyone or aggravate anyone's symptoms, so please don't kick yourself or agonize about it, but I want to try to do my best due diligence in being considerate. And likewise, check the tags for yourself too so you don't accidentally stumble onto something that's going to cause problems for you, I don't want to do that to anybody, intentionally or not.
