even ignoring everything else wrong with lore olympus (which in itself feels impossible) there is just something really egregious and insulting at the way a "modern retelling" over an ancient greek myth just full-heartedly whitewashes the entire culture and mythos.

and it's not like rachel is the first to do it - greek myths and legends have been whitewashed for centuries, depictions of the gods have been categorically stripped of their ethnicity and origins long before rachel got a hold of them. it's the fact that rachel goes out of her way to insult the original myths whenever she can, that she emphasizes and pushes a western-centric mindset and viewpoint over and over and over and not only reinforces the whitewashing, but continues it down the line.

like, this is the first episode.

rachel goes out of her way to mock the original styles and wardrobes of the ancient greek world, and i get her attempt was to make persephone feel "out of place" with the more "modern" clothing that the other gods wear, but it really just does more to a) demonize demeter, who is almost always in traditional clothing, b) sexualize persephone.

go even broader with it, move away from the clothing itself, and rachel doesn't even bother to use any of the ancient traditions that are core to the myths. like for the love of god, she uses a christian wedding for persephone and hades!

greece is the birthplace of modern democracy and had a powerful judicial system, and rachel instead uses the modern / western iteration of court because ... why not

(completely unrelated but the inserts of everyone except eros and aphrodite come from the stupid zoom session zeus had back when he first charged persephone with treason, meaning we have proof yet again that rachel isn't drawing the characters into the scene, she's making pngs and sticking them into pre-arranged backgrounds downloaded from stock images)

and there are ten thousand more examples i could pull, because this is just the whole entire comic. you can look at a lot of modern adaptions and see where things have been modernized respectfully, and where they are done with disdain for the source material - no one is claiming percy jackson, for example, is perfect, but the author took a great deal of care in his research, and the love for the original myths and culture shine through. lore olympus has zero respect for the original stories, exemplified in how rachel demonizes demeter - the actual crux of the myth. it's bad writing and bad research and further attempts to whitewash a rich and storied culture that had people from so many walks of life, who existed in full spectrum of lgbt identity, who did not conform or even know of the world that exists today. you can modernize without erasing it, and rachel's refusal to do so is one of the many issues tacked to lore olympus.

always kind of frustrated that the conversation around gendered segregation in sports is sort of dismissed as "well men can't handle losing to women" and it's never deconstructed further like. the elephant in the room is that institutionally it serves a purpose of functionally cosigning women to lesser treatment because of deep, deep, deep misogyny. it's not just pay, though that's the most obvious surface-level marker of inequality, but the time, effort, and support. funding, access to facilities, coaches, safety on the job (if the woman's game is even a viable professional career! if leagues even exist!) that's what support means here. the reason women do not "perform as well as men" is because of fundamental structural inequality. often, the game is decades behind. think about like... what someone playing for the chelsea woman's team could accomplish if she had access to the same salary, coaching staff, and training ground. like its important to consistently bring this up because it directly challenges the idea that "women's sports" are uniformly materially beneficial and even need "protecting" in the first place (protecting, of course, being a word which is all about weakness and coddling womanhood).

Hands down, this is the best scene in the whole series. Not because they're starting over. Not because Ming is about to knock the sneezes right outta Joe.

Because they're laughing during sex. So much of their relationship has been about control, and sorrow, and finding each other, but in this specific moment they are starting from the same place. They're steeped in joy. They're comfortable. They're open. They're scandalising the neighbours. They're together. They're laughing.

What a joy this show was.

i adore how mxtx sorta flipped the idea on the whole top/bottom thing with svsss, and just BL relationships in general.

making bingqiu very open to switching, not making the "bottom" super feminine and actually leaning more to the handsome side compared to the "top", how luo binghe is manipulative sensitive and cries easily, etc. one of the main themes in svsss is literally about sexuality (and possibly even about gender roles).

as a queer asian man myself, i absolutely despise the "yaoi archetype" and it was one of the reasons why i avoided consuming BL media. hell, years ago when i first saw heavens official blessing, i mentally groaned and went, "ugh, let me guess, the bottom is super feminine and innocent, while the top is masculine and experienced." of course, that's not the case now, but it's disappointing how that thought was there purely because of the god awful way fetish-y media portrays homosexual people and couples. because, believe it or not, we are not assigned male/female typical gender roles just because one likes to top/bottom (and even then, it's not even like that! some people have preferences, sure, but it's not so strictly "i'm top/bottom")

so, while i absolutely LOVE the english novel designs (especially luo binghe's cute curly hair, gongyi xiao, etc, and personally believe a lot of the takes from the western artist on the designs are an improvement), i am greatly saddened by people subconsciously assigning shen qingqiu as someone more delicate and feminine and luo binghe as someone super masculine and muscly. like, if you're going to have luo binghe depicted as the western design (i believe this stems from binghe being applied to more western ideals for men, and, admittedly, i actually really love his design), at least don't make shen qingqiu feminine and delicate? don't have his appearance play into the stupid yaoi thing?

i get that people have different takes on svsss, especially how the western version depicts it. but, people just... seem to very over exaggerate the top/bottom roles when it comes to bingqiu (again, these two are, canonically, VERY open to switching).

it's weird, it's uncomfortable, and it comes across as, "so, who wears the pants in the relationship?"

so, can we please have more canonically handsome shen qingqiu? canonically beautiful and pretty boy luo binghe (they literallly state that binghe looks EXACTLY like his mom, su xiyan! while a more handsome woman, is still very beautiful!! plus it is stated several times that binghe is slim, and that shang qinghua made him that way!) or at the very least, a BL couple who actually look like normal people (ok thats a little hard considering binghe is literally supposed to be perfect) and not just a stupid fetishized version of themselves.

and no, i'm not saying that queer men shouldn't be feminine or men who are feminine shouldn't be in a relationship with guys who are masculine, etc.

TLDR: please stop twinkifying shen qingqiu and going against what mxtx defied for us queer men (the stupid yaoi roles). and for the love of whoever you believe in, do NOT think that i hate the english design or people's personal interpretation of characters, i just hate the subconscious assigning of gender roles to bingqiu and how media portrays and fetishizes LGBTQ+ relationships in general.

edit: also i love teardrew's (check them out on twitter!) interpretation of shang qinghua. while i do really like the the eng novel design's tiny scared hamster vibes, teardrew's version just radiates "up to no good, paranoid but suspicious looking bitch" rat man and i love it so so so much. i'm not gonna repost their art bc i don't know how they feel about that but perhaps you can search up "svsss designs" on here, you'll see it pop up eventually lol.

edit 2 (1/16): i just saw someone reblog a post (that im pretty sure was referring to this one because, well, if you saw it i think it'd be a little clear kahxj) that was about how bingqiu switching and completely eschewing traditional top/bottom dynamics was a fandom idea or smth? so now i'm wondering, since i swear i remember that they were open to switching, but it's just that sqq preferred to bottom and/or was just a little too lazy to top. plus, sqq is a pretty unreliable narrator who says he doesn't want something one moment and then he does. how could he say no to bingbing? esp if he seems to wanna try bottoming too. perhaps i'm mixing things up though, idk? so if anyone can find that passage that says he only and strictly wants to bottom or whatever please show me! but i think the point of this post still stands haha (i wanted to ask about it, actually, but when i clicked on the og post's user it turned out that they blocked me ? so that was a little surprising oops. hey if ur somehow reading this, im... sorry for making you want to block me bc of this post? akdhxjj)

They say a parent should never have to bury a child. It’s one of the saddest things that can happen. 

As an elf, death was never something you ever really thought about. You will live for hundreds, thousands of years. It’s a length of time almost impossible to imagine. The difference between your lifespan and forever is really not that distinguishable on a day-to-day basis. Sure, accidents can happen. They have an unusual frequency in your family. But it’s just coincidence, not something to worry about. 

There is this stigma that elves are… sad. Perhaps melancholic is the correct word. If you think about it too much, it makes sense. You worked with other races, with humans, with half-elves. With people who will only be alive for such a small fraction of your lifetime. To build a relationship with a non-elf is to know that, someday, it will end. This is inevitable. 

There are some elves who live their whole lives in fear of that inevitable end. The joy that can be experienced in those 50, 60, 70 years with a human is not worth the grief you will hold for the rest of your life. Others find themselves mourning that death long before their non-elf loved one ever dies. 

You never intentionally steered clear of forming relationships with non-elves. It just so happened that the woman who completely swept you off your feet was an elf. And boy, did she sweep you. You had plans, a structure, work that meant something. You were doing something you could picture yourself spending effectively eternity doing. But she came along and in even the short time you originally planned to spend together, the thought of not being with her was just unbearable.

(Maybe you understood even then the sadness felt by those elves with their non-immortal loved ones)

So you go off with her, change your entire life because making her happy makes you happy. 

And you have a child. A beautiful baby girl.

She looks so much like her mother.

You’re going to have almost forever with her. And on dark days, days where you struggle to see the colours that make up the world, she gives you hope. Once, you thought there was nobody you’d want to spend time with more than your wife, but this girl… she is so full of life. She has an impossible spirit and determination. She is music, and art, and everything good in the world. Any doubts you’ve ever had about what your life will be like in a hundred, two hundred, five hundred years time, whether it will still be worth living, are gone the moment you look at her. Because you don’t know what the future will be like but she’ll be there so it can’t be that bad.

You never thought about having to bury her. Why would you? She’s an elf. She’ll live for thousands of years. Just like you. Just like her mother.

But then… 

Horns. 

Then the woman who swept you off your feet and changed your entire life confesses she had an affair. It was a silly, brief mistake. She wanted some excitement. The stability you provided wasn’t what she felt she deserved. She screwed up. 

And your daughter isn’t your daughter. She is. She’s not your blood. She’s not… 

It doesn’t hit you straight away. There are so many feelings. The hurt, betrayal, anger. Blaming yourself, blaming your (now ex-) wife. Blaming the other man. The other man. The other man who is not an elf.

And eventually, it does dawn on you. Even as your daughter accepts you back into her life, even as she tries to spend an alarming amount of time with you, you know this is only temporary. You’ve heard other elves call the life of a half-elf a blink of an eye. Is it really that? Her father, her biological father, isn’t mortal. So maybe… 

It doesn’t matter how long your daughter lives, because it will be nothing compared to your life span, stretching on to near eternity. And in five hundred years, she will be gone. And you… will you want to be here?

But cheer up. You can’t mourn her before she’s gone. You just have to make the most of the time you have, even if it’s serving her tatter-tots in the school cafeteria.
