After switching sides on the whole recast vs. legit debate- you sort of realize that pro-recasters just spew a bunch of BS to make themselves seem like the better people. I'm genuinely like- mind blown. I was told legit collectors were stuck up pricks who hated everyone who didn't "do it right" after being around them they're usually pretty nice. Yes people are dumb or easily offended, but they're not horrible people

I repainted my fan-art Ken Kaneki (MYou Bettina male) for the second time. I had enhanced the 1st face up I gave him previously. However, I decided to attempt painting him the way I learned to do 1:6 sculpts, form that one (15 episodes) tutorial I watched. I was impatient however, which I regret to no tomorrow. So, I was able to get most of the pigmented skin texture on there with mostly acrylics. Then I grew impatient, because I was taking too long (it was dumb of me, terribly so!). 

I am still super happy with how he looks despite using pastels and ruining the beautiful subtleness I had going on. I did take progress photos, but they ar more awful than these. I am of course heavily disappointed in my hair strokes -- my eyebrows and eyelashes are horrid. However, I am happy with how much more mature he appears, due to the heavy dark brows, so I’ll probably be keeping them for a while (before I start obsessing and repaint him again!). 

I need to get a new pointy brush, because I managed to already ruin the one I was using to paint my Sephiroth and Leon 1:6 head sculpts. Bettina has much, much larger eyes, and I was still not able to get not-so-clean, but kind of sharp lines like on Sephy. I wasn’t able to do a better job on Leon either, but he has tinier eyes and they were sculpted way off, so I kind of have to cheat with the way I shade his lower eyelid to make it look like they are a more accurate shape. Leaving me to having to pain the lashes on an area that is hard to do so (and yes, I also suck, so there’s that too!). 

Still, I am super happy with my Kaneki fan-art doll so far. I wish he had broader shoulders, and overall, more lean-young-male body proportions, like Kaneki has in the anime. Instead of noodle arms and child-bearing-hips. Besides the proportions, I am in-love with this tiny face! He’s so pretty and has great lips, as he as intended to be female, but can be a very versatile sculpt! (: Now I just need to start making some actual Kaneki inspired clothes and maybe a more accurate wig, as painful as that will be. I was thinking of this wig as his default one, but it makes him look cone-headed. Lol! DX

Pro recast owners can be annoying sometimes, call me an elitist gatekeeper offline and see what happens. You're not welcome at meetups, I hope you realize that, unless you create your own recast friendly ones. Just keep in mind that recasts are NOT welcome at official events like ResinRose. I will not hesitate to call you out, go ahead and call me a bitch but I want to preserve the community.

The comparison between bjd collectors and designer purse collectors has always made alotta sense to me, especially in regards to fakes. But what I NEVER understood was the way anti artists use that comparison and rework it into their anti artist arguments.

We as bjd collectors will compare the two and say that collecting bjds, just like collecting designer bags, is a hobby that requires saving up funds, hunting for bargains, buying from the source, researching reputable resellers and dealers, modifying, refurbishing, and building up communities and relationships with other people involved in our luxury hobby

But anti artists will compare the two and almost only focus on the looks! They'll state that they would never want to own a minifee Chloe when they can have a finimee Zoey just like they would never want to own a Prada when they can have a Nada! And it's like, fine, if you don't want to buy the doll you want then werk mama. But at least try to be more sane about it like the Nada owner is!!

I've see girlies go on paragraph after paragraph rants about how happy they are with their "minifee" and how it's (allegedly) just as good as a Fairyland minifee and how they're doing better than us because their "minfee" didn't cost an arm and a leg. And it's honestly concerning in a sick way. Like watching someone struggle (and fail) to not throw up

You think the Nada purse owners are doing that!? NO!!!!! The Nada owners are being just as shady, sneaky, snake like, and silly as the anti artists girlies, but at least the fake purse owners haven't convinced themselves that they ACTUALLY own the designer bags they NEVER paid for. You talk to anyone in the rbjd and ask them to name what type of dolls they own and those clowns actually have the AUDACITY to name off companies and sculpts!

As you may know, I'm a former pro bjd faceup artist. I've been painting commissions for eight years of my life, got a disasterous burnout, sold most of my bjds and quit.

But than Arcane hit me like a truck and resurrected my long gone spark.

So here is my humble ode to Viktor. I love the way bjd helps to reveal and put your emotions into something physical, material. It's some sort of magic for me. This doll is a symbol and an idea I appreciate so dearly. Every time I see my bjd Viktor, I remember that even if I am a person with physical limitations, I must not give up on the way to my goals. It really warms me up.

Hi everyone! I will have several big expenses over the summer (wisdom tooth removal, newer car, potential ADHD and pcos evals/diagnoses, etc) and I want to make sure they are as... least-impacting as possible on my savings, especially since most are medical and I have no idea how much my insurance is actually going to cover... so any reblogs and shares are always appreciated!

Harucasting Smile Maji head: She’s some kind of tan resin, but I don’t 100% remember which one. Her previous owner split the head and body so the coa went with the body. I remember her previous owners name & email, but I don’t recall their instagram handle. Maji has thankfully NOT been recasted so I do not worry about her legitimacy, but I wanted to be upfront about that detail. Her magnets need to be reglued and she still has faceup residue. As with any of my Harucasting dolls, in respect to Haru’s wishes, I will only sell his dolls to pro-artist/anti-recast individuals.

5stardoll Elf Elaine: She was painted by her previous owner and given a mani-pedi which is chipping as well as pretty purple body shimmer. Her face still has faceup residue on it. She’s really cute but I need to make room — I am willing to sell her head separately, though. According to her card of authenticity she was produced in late 2018. I believe she is in normal pink skin.

Latidoll Blue Yern:

Yern is a slim MSD sized doll and the Blue (MSD) line has been long discontinued. Yern still has her coa and Latidoll manual, as well as the emblem in and outside of her head. I am not sure of the specifics but her torso has had some kind of mod job for mobility reasons?

Yern is from early 2009 and has certainly yellowed, but her yellowing appears to be consistent. Yern would probably benefit from a restringing with thicker elastics but I can get her to pose and stand just fine. Her s hooks were replaced and she has traditional/standard bjd s hooks in her wrists and ankles. For whatever reason one elbow likes to stay slightly bent. Yern will be shipped UNSTRUNG so that would be a good opportunity for her elastics to be changed; she still has an o hook for her head.

Her faceup is holding up really well considering it is quite old but please be aware that it is old, has some wear, and it is not factored into the price I am selling Yern at. The biggest sign of wear I noticed as a small dark streak near her temple.

She has some damage near her foot/ankle. Considering her age I think she has been holding up really well.

Dollzone MSD Girl Body: normal pink resin. Arrived from Alice collections in late 2022, spent most of its time in the box. Asking $200 + shipping.

Harucasting Big Geuru: She is in neul medium tan. She has a face up by @tonocha331. She has an extra pair of hands and comes with her box and card of authenticity. She will come without clothes or eyes.

She has some small s hook scratches in one wrist from a previous owner and several small scratches on her belly. Her face up seems to be in overall good condition other than three shiny spots on the side of her head. $550 + shipping

Logandolls Primrose: Primrose in light tan (coffee) with additional heel feet (strung) and an extra pair of hands. She does not come with a company box but she has a card of authenticity and comes with a blanket that I believe logandolls made for her. Received in a trade from my friend @groovyblueworld! She will NOT come with a pair of eyes. If desired, I can ship her in an old Dollzone company box for extra protection. Ordinarily she would cost $480 new but I am asking $440 + shipping - you basically get the extra hands and feet for free and an extra $10 discount. I can also sell a Flower Primrose faceplate in Resinsoul normal for an additional $40.

the slippery slope of Recasts

“We buy recasts of limited old dolls because they aren’t available anymore.” Many have been rereleased. I’m betting you still didn’t buy them when they did become available again - because recast acceptance is now such a mindset once you get into them.

“We wouldn’t buy recast artist dolls, only company dolls.” That went by the wayside too.  Now artist and small studio dolls are among the most recast. How do you think the the rampant recasting of P0povy dolls doesn’t impact the Sisters? That is impossible to ignore.

“We don’t think it hurts ‘big companies’ like Fairyland.” Fairyland releases videos showing their extremely modest workshop with their whole design team consisting of only a handful of people.

“Dolls are just too expensive and hard to get.” Yet many recasts these days are of readily available, standard dolls, mid-size, mid-price like MNF Chloe.

I could go on and cover every point recast people have brought forth but they all end at the same place, there’s a right and a wrong way to do the hobby if you want to be accepted within the main hobby spaces and by most of your fellow hobbyists, and that is to respect the artists and buy legit. I think it is more important than ever to crack down on the any tolerance of recasts since we are meeting up more in groups again. I suspect there has been some backsliding into recast buying over the pandemic. I don’t advocate being nasty to anyone, I know I can’t really sway you into not buying recasts if that’s your choice, but I also don’t have to associate with you, sell you anything, sew anything for you or do faceups for your dolls if you own recasts, that’s my choice. And as a whole, we can also certainly and clearly restrict our groups and meets to legit dolls only, making no exceptions.

2023 might be a very good time to do another BJD Artist Day (or even week) across every doll space as an online photo-posting event to re-affirm the support that so many of us will always have for the artists who create our dolls.

Had my first bjd meet up yesterday afternoon!!! It was just two of us but we had a blast!

Look at all our babies:

My friend brought her very large SD Angelphilia and Fairyland Feeple girls in the back of the group as well as her gorgeous Lilycat Poulpy in green resin!

I brought Horus (Dream Valley Rah), Calypso (SleepySheepyDreams Puff + Doll Leaves Hybrid), Milo (Doll Leaves Louis), Anubis (Modded Dream Valley Glen) and my Frappzilla Blooms: Caspian (White), Astrophel (Black and Gold) and Brier and Fleur (Purple)

Compared to her Fairyland Feeple girl, Horus is so tiny 🥲:

He's so used to being the tallest among my collection and he's met his match 🤣

I ended up not repainting my Myou Bettina male, but instead I “enhanced” his face a bit.  After staring at him in Photoshop for what seemed like years and doing a bunch of mock-ups. I decided that I wanted to try making him look more mature, by just shading him a bit heavy-handed and just add to the gloom. I love that he looks constantly pissed, petulant, somber all the time, but now it’s at another level, and I am really loving it!  I probably make all my dolls look that way, due to my eternal love of angry brows. However, they all work in the end, because of the characters I choose to recreate in doll form. 

I am still hoping to improve on my hair strokes one day, but this time I just wanted to add to his face. Instead of repainting him completely. I kind of tried adding two pairs of eyelashes to his tiny eye openings, so I need to fix those. I do enjoy the thick, full-lash-line. That’s what I always hope for with my dolls with applied top lashes. However, these don’t look that nice and one of them looks further messier than the other. Maybe I wouldn’t mind it, if both were about equally messy/clean, but I do mind this level of asymmetry. I had to trim some of the lash hairs, and now I am dreading finding if I ruined his “default” pair, because those were really nice lashes. I hope I didn’t damage those int he processes. 

I am happy with the way he looks overall; I can always try repainting him again fully, from zero next time! He is a beautiful doll, I only wish I was more talented (or had steadier hands!), to at least give the sculpt a tiny bit more justice. These turned out granier than ever, I am not sure what went wrong. My cell phone was at full charge, and I had the light blasting right on his face (if I put the light anywhere further, the photos become darkness themselves).  I suck! DX
