My bestie and I have been on a The Lord of the Rings / The Hobbit movie marathon this month. And we got to this scene in The Return of the King (Extended Edition).
I'm not sorry to say this, but I don't sympathize with Eowyn, neither here nor in the book.
In the films, Eowyn already knew that Aragorn was in love with another woman, when she asked him in The Two Towers "Who is she? The woman who gave you that jewel?" (This is when she sees Arwen's Evenstar pendant around Aragorn's neck.) Eowyn knew that Aragorn was already with another woman — and, per the film timeline, which was drastically condensed, he and Arwen have been betrothed for 5 months by the time Gandalf and the Three Hunters get to Edoras and meet Eowyn — and yet Eowyn continued to "love" a man she didn't know jack-squat about, and whom she found out was, in fact, way too old for her in the Extended Edition of the film (he's 87 compared to her 24).
In the book, Aragorn and Arwen have already been betrothed since Third Age 2980, a whole 15 years before Eowyn was even born (Third Age 2995). By the time Aragorn met Eowyn in Third Age 3019, he and Arwen have been bethrothed for 39 years.
And guess what. In the book, Aragorn and Arwen have known each other since Third Age 2951, a whole 44 years before Eowyn was even born. Hell, they've known each other for a whole 10 years before even Eowyn's father was born (Third Age 2961).
Take a good look at the book timeline (if you need to, look it up on The Lord of the Rings Wiki or Tolkien Gateway):
Aragorn was born in Third Age 2931.
Aragorn and Arwen meet for the first time in Third Age 2951.
Aragorn and Arwen become betrothed in Third Age 2980.
Eowyn was born in Third Age 2995.
Gandalf heals Theoden in Third Age 3019, March 2nd, and Aragorn meets Eowyn that same day.
They all depart to Helm's Deep, and then the Battle of Helm's Deep takes place, the next day, March 3rd. Both the departure and the battle take place in one day.
Aragorn reaches Dunharrow on March 7th, and then goes to the Paths of the Dead the next day, March 8th.
That same day, March 8th, before Aragorn departs, Eowyn confesses that she "loves" him, and he rejects her because she was Loving a Shadow.
That's right. In the book, Eowyn knew Aragorn for literally only 6 days at best before declaring that she "loves" him.
In the book, in Third Age 3019, when a large portion of the main narrative of The Lord of the Rings takes place, Aragorn and Arwen have known each other for 68 years, since Third Age 2951, and have been betrothed for 39 of those years, since Third Age 2980.
In the book, in Third Age 3019, when a large portion of the main narrative of The Lord of the Rings takes place, Aragorn and Eowyn have known each other for literally only 6 days at best — from March 2nd to March 8th — before she confesses her "love" to him.
In both the book and Extended Edition of The Two Towers, during the main narrative, Aragorn is 87 and Eowyn is 24.
There is no way that an 87-year-old Aragorn was going to throw away his betrothal of 39 years to the woman he's known for 68 years and instead go after a 24-year-old woman he's known for literally only 6 days.
Tolkien himself must have realized this, and that's one reason why he decided that Aragorn was "too old and lordly and grim" for Eowyn — because, as shown in the book timeline, it's true.

In full support of having cake and eating it, too;
gay!Faramir and bi!Eowyn marriage of convenience, orchestrated by Eomer who's like
"You, lord Faramir, need a wife to give you an heir and not mind the besotted looks you send our King. My dear sister needs a man who won't constrain her to house and hearth or mind the company she keeps. You should talk."
(Little Elboron still grows up well-loved though. Brought along to whever his parents go instead of left with a wet nurse, he can ride before he can walk and has disrupted many a council meeting with his happy babbling.)
#wild poly Gondor is now firmly my headcanon#bi!Aragorn and demi!Arwen had an open relationship from before some of the others were born#King Eomer is the much-burdened het of the group#read a bunch of fics where it's a Thing that Rohan is pro-lgbt while Gondor isn't#so Eomer I imagine as an ally in the way of publicly going#isn't it a SHAME King Elessar that some in your kingdom are so close-minded as to deny their fellow people the happiness of a loving union#and Aragorn is like YES I am DEEPLY SADDENED that SOME MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL would still hold to such ANCIENT and OPPRESSIVE views#he's King side-eye#i will jump any and all hoops to make sure Aragorn/Faramir can make love without being bothered by unnecssary realism#thoughts

Jobs LOTR characters would have in the modern world
Sam
Landscaper or forest conservationist. I headcanon that he started out training in his dad’s landscaping business and then Frodo and Bilbo encouraged him to get a higher education. He double majors in sustainable agriculture and forestry. I think he would work for like a national park or another conservation agency but he’s really passionate and good at working with impacted communities and local farmers since he came from a blue collar background
Frodo
Like in the books he has a passion for languages and so is a translator and has a phd in linguistics. I think he might work at a museum or even in archaeology. I could also see him doing some kind of social work since he is willing to give anyone a chance (like Gollum). After his traumatic experiences he probably works from home translating novels
Merry
Merry is a trust fund kid and a stoner. He studies business in college and his dad hopes he will use it to make bank but he uses it to open up a really successful weed store in California
Pippin
Like Merry is a trust fund kid, he helps out at Merry’s store but doesn’t really have a real job
Aragorn
I could see him as an EMT or a search and rescue officer in a huge national park similarly park ranger would make sense. Elrond wants him to be a doctor or a lawyer but he likes his park ranger job
Boromir
Military. Not sure which branch maybe army? He retires in his forties and hangs out with Merry and Pippin at their weed store and lets his vet buddies in on their good deals
Gandalf
Old professor at an esteemed college but he’s very much considered an eccentrentic by other staff
Legolas
He’s an influencer and model. He has like 2 million followers on instagram and is constantly terrifying his PR person (Aragorn or Boromir alternate this job)
Gimli
Geologist. He’s done a lot of different jobs within that from working for the government to high end jewelry stores to making his own stone crafts
Eowyn
Works for Planned Parenthood and also operates a horse barn where people teach lessons and board their horses. She’s really chill at her barn because she gets all her anger out at the pro choice marches she organizes
Elrond
World renowned doctor. Probably a heart surgeon. Kind of full of himself for this
Not sure yet what Arwen and Faramir do…

All the options are based from my prior 2 polls asking who people wanted Faramir’s Dad and Mom to be.
I came upon some confusion with myself at first do to my removal of all the one’s that didnt get any votes at all from the list- and so ended up with 7 mom candidates and 10 dads.
It was late enough that when i made the decision that i should take the three lowest voted dad’s and put them with the highest voted dads to even out the equation i forgot to put into consideration that that meant i’d taken six Dads out of the way. And thus decided i should line up the bottom four of each list to fix it. I realized ‘math dosent work for tired brains’ and smushed the remaining 3 together and called it a night. As a Bonus: Merry, Pippin, Fili and Kili get spots on the list. To understand what each of these pairs mean- here are some of the pros of co-parenting.
Elrond and Dain: many children (mayhem and otherwise)
Gandalf and Bolg: totally terribly absurd and polar opposite methods of raising children.
Aragorn and Smaug: compromise is not easy
Bard and Shelob: she has kids, he has kids, they’re equally horrified
Bilbo and Arwen: casual aunt and uncle vibes all the way
Beorn and Dori: mothering is a term not used lightly between them
Sméagol and the Bardlings: they’re all children your honor
Dis and Thranduil and Lobelia: Strong willed, sassy, intense group of differing backgrounds and cultures all set on raising a baby human.
Bonus:
Kili and Fili & Merry and Pippin: they handle things like an Ent on fire.
As a note this is for General co-parenting without romance between a bunch of ill adjusted peoples over a very human child with an overprotective brother.
The winning group will be written and posted of here, anything from snippets, dialogue, world traits to poetic prose. If it comes to be it will be viewable here- so choose wisely for Faramir’s new family depends on it.

Discord Highlights: The Fellowship of the Dudes
[4/28/23]
InvisibleWashboard:
I have a head canon that one of Merry's sons in particular had to be taught to swim early because the kid was OBSESSED with any and all things to do with water. Estella was afraid to ever let him out of her sight for fear he would end up drowned before he could even walk.
meg is me:
Imagine merry desires his kids to be Equestrians and good old Stybba bears many a baby Brandybuck rider To Merry's dismay bby Eomer HATES ponies
InvisibleWashboard:
Eomer is the son that loves the water in my head.
[4/29/23]
Writing Valkyrie:
I was thinking last night, and I'd like to think that surfing was big in Numenor. Elros and his Queen made it a family tradition, and the whole populace really took to it. It died off a bit with the King's Men, deeming it not worth their time, something only the Faithful indulged in. Now adays, it only survives in Dol Amroth. And can be found in Alqualondë It took Thorongil some time to learn it, but once he did, Prince Imrahil never beat him again.
On the first diplomatic trip the High King makes to Dol Amroth, Imrahil demands a rematch. "Lets get barreled, dude!" -Imrahil (probably) "Yeah, dude, lets go shred some waves!" Aragorn (also probably) "Don't forget to reapply your sun balm." -Arwen (definitely)
Rumor has it, that the King is set to take the title of "Surf Champion" from the previous master, Thorongil.
InvisibleWashboard:
Someone who can draw please draw Aragorn as a surfer dude, I am begging.
Writing Valkyrie:
Shaka sign and everything.
InvisibleWashboard:
Does Arwen participate/get good at it? I feel like Legolas would be decent when he comes to visit.
Writing Valkyrie:
She'd be very graceful at it, and soon comes to surpass her husband.
InvisibleWashboard:
Mmmm. Yes. Very good.
Writing Valkyrie:
Legolas would just do handstands on the board. Or shoot targets while shredding the waves.
InvisibleWashboard:
I like the idea of him showing off with handstands. I know canonically he doesn’t have siblings but he has SUCH youngest sibling energy and handstands on the board is very much a youngest brother thing, I think.
Writing Valkyrie:
He can even do 'em one handed "Look ada!" The Good Surfer gene runs in the Olwë/Elwë bloodline.
Gimli would just like to enjoy the sunshine, thank you very much.
InvisibleWashboard:
Who else gives it a go? Faramir? Eowyn? Would Boromir from the Boromir Lives comic have tried?
I’m obsessed with this idea now.
Writing Valkyrie:
Boromir would give it a try, but he'd surf like the old timers that just kinda stand and just ride it out.
Eowyn and Faramir would boogey-board.
Lothiriel is a pro at surfing. Eomer would like nothing with that thank you very much, but he will just get in the water and float a bit.
Imrahil kinda hopes that [Lothiriel would] surpass Aragorn, but she just enjoys it for the fun of it and not competition. Though if she did compete, everyone better watch out.
Elrond and Celebrian get into it a bit after Elrond sails, due to 1) Elros did it, 2) Arwen and Aragorn did it, and 3) Elladan and Elrohir enjoy it.
Though they steer clear of Galadriel, 'cause she absolutely shreds them waves.
Celeborn just like his floaties, thanks.
InvisibleWashboard:
Celeborn is such a trophy husband. I love him.
Writing Valkyrie:
Finrod thinks it's neat, and is the best at getting barreled.
But yes, surfing picks up again in the fourth age, and becomes a tradition of the royal families, that unites them all.
Me:
I haven’t read the Silmarillion, but based on Tarva’s comics, Finrod gives me such strong surfer dude vibes.
Writing Valkyrie:
I haven't read it yet, either, but maybe we're onto something. 😂 I mean, they did grow up on the beach. You can't tell me Earwen and Grandpa Olwe didn't teach the kids about the beach and the ocean.
Gandalf would do it sometimes, but he'd just stand on the board as if on dry land, staff and everything, riding it like it was a segway.
InvisibleWashboard:
Not to bring up stuff from yesterday, but Merry brings his family to visit and water obsessed Éomer is losing his mind over the surfing and wants to figure out a way to do something similar back in the Shire.
meg is me:
pippin is canonically good at balancing just throwing that out there
Writing Valkyrie:
He'd be good at it, but he'd ride goofy-footed.
ladyofgifts:
what if he's better at it than Merry so whenever they visit, Eomer sticks to him for the whole time going this is my Favorite Uncle
InvisibleWashboard:
Yes. So much yes.
meg is me:
Merry: gasp how rude eomer: dad you aren't my uncle Merry: i know but still
Me: (re: surfing in the Shire)
Hmm…okay, no way they’re gonna have wind strong enough to make waves on the Brandywine, but if they can get a dinghy going fast enough on a brisk day, they might be able to water ski! X-D
InvisibleWashboard:
Estella would hate that. So much. Merry would think it's great though.
Me:
If you’re ever lacking wind, you can always compensate by tying the prow to two ponies, one on either bank, on a narrow stretch of the river 🤣🤣
InvisibleWashboard:
What I'm picturing now is a bit closer to what I grew up doing with my brothers... if it got really muddy, we would tie a skimboard to the back of a four wheeler and ride/pull each other around on that. I could see little hobbits trying something similar with their ponies.
Me:
Oh the mess it would make. But how fun!
InvisibleWashboard:
Oh yes, so much dirt in places dirt is not supposed to be!
Me:
All I’m hearing is that Eomer Brandybuck is the first hobbit to move to Dol Amroth. Ostensibly it’s to be an ambassador on behalf of the Shire, but in actuality, it’s for the waves, bro.
InvisibleWashboard:
I'M OBSESSED.
Me:
Tolkien: Hobbits, as a rule, hate the water. Us: So this is our OC Eomer Brandybuck, he’s a hobbit surfer bro
chaosandwhatnot:
"this sign can't stop me because i can't read"
InvisibleWashboard:
No, you don't understand... Eomer wasn't even one of Merry's OC kids I was that interested in, but NOW...
Wait does he move out there by himself or does he have a family he brings with him? Does he form a small hobbit community outside of the Shire by doing this or does he just stay single forever because his heart only belongs to the sea?
Me:
“His heart only belongs to the Sea” sounds so beautiful and poetic and Tolkien-esque until we add the clarification “by that we mean he just really, really loves to surf”
Writing Valkyrie:
I'd love to say that he has a small family when he moves down there, along with some other like-minded hobbits, but I'd think that he'd also teach others, hobbit and non-hobbit, to surf, regardless if he's alone or not.
Kasey Gondor:
forms a community of inter-racial surfing enthusiasts. after Legolas leaves Ithilien some of the elves that were there join up. we'll get some dwarves down there too. everyone just intermingles. here we are not hobbits or men or elves or dwarves. but dudes. surfing dudes.
meg is me:
The Fellowship of the Dudes The other fellowship was male of course but not all of them were Dudes
Writing Valkyrie:
Come to Gondor, we have surfing. 🤣 And thus, peace was established with Harad, Khand, and Rhun.
Morgoth cannot surf. Evil does not like water -> They will not come to the ocean -> Cannot surf.
meg is me:
Truer words have never been spoken
[4/30/23]
Me:
InvisibleWashboard I believe you requested this yesterday X-D
InvisibleWashboard:
This is perfection. Thank you.
Writing Valkyrie is @writingvalkyrie, InvisibleWashboard is @invisiblewashboard, chaosandwhatnot is @grondds-and-roses, Kasey Gondor is @captaingondor, ladyofgifts is our beloved Zara, and meg is me does not have tumblr :-3

It's fun to talk about Fellowship as an adaptation because they changed so much- including some key details but it still feels faithful to the book. You can see how they made changes in the adaptation both from the perspective of making it work for the length of an (admittedly still very long) film as well as making changes due to having slightly different priorities as storytellers from Tolkein. Tolkein was very big on having a world that felt like it was big and very full of different people and cultures. There are a lot of extraneous named characters in the book that got either cut from the movie or de-emphasized. The use of characters is just a bit more economical in the movie which is important as there is a lot less time to work with in a film.
I really liked that they made Arwen be the one who rides with Frodo to Rivendell. I liked that they added scenes between her and Aragorn to heighten their romance. I liked that Boromir wasn't immediately pro-Aragorn being king and there was more tension between the two which allowed them to have their own personal arcs.

Nepotřebuju každou epizodu tucet takřka identických montáží kmenového života pouze s hudbou (takže mě to coby diváka nijak nepřibližuje k soutěžícím).
To nejspíš souvisí s absencí nějakých individuálních herních výhod (krádež hlasu, extra hlas...).
Ještě nevím, jestli do toho půjdu, protože předabovanou královnu Sandru bych asi nedala.)

for the threesome ask game:
thranduil and his wife but you have to spend the whole of the next day with Legolas and you're not sure if he knows or not
éowyn and faramir but it's at aragorn's coronation and while he doesn't actually walk in on you or interrupt, it is unfortunately how éomer found out his sister was engaged
arondir and his guard friend whose name i forgot but they make you go on a run with them at 6 a.m. the next morning
galadriel and thranduil but you have to do it in rivendell because they both kept arguing about whose kingdom had the better "👁️ elf 🫦 toys 👁️" and you end up having to explain the reason for your visit to elrond
arwen and aragorn but the whole thing is just a ruse to get him to shower and you spend at least 39% of the time doing looney tunes-esque schemes with arwen to push him into the lake while he's distracted. Pros: you get unexpected shower sex and he doesn't smell like horse
glorfindel and elrond but you spend a good portion of your energy trying to avoid touching glorfindel's hair so he doesn't get upset but it is Very Long and there's A Lot Of It so it's like that one tiktok game where you tie a bottle to a ceiling fan and try to avoid getting hit. Pros: extra adrenaline
beren and lúthien but huan keeps scratching at the door to be let in
isildur and valandil but ontamo finds out and he's not upset or jealous (he is canonically engaged) but is nevertheless a little put out that he wasn't invited
rings of power elrond AND lotr trilogy elrond
fëanor and nerdanel but they get divorced immediately afterwards and while it definitely was not because of you and they both assure you of it fingolfin starts high fiving you every time he sees you and it's getting a lil awkward
any two characters of your choosing but you have to do it in erebor while smaug is asleep and if you wake him up you will both absolutely die
I already can't stop laughing and I haven't even read that all yet 😂😂
All of this is absolutely unhinged and I especially love the last one.
thranduil and his wife but you have to spend the whole of the next day with Legolas and you're not sure if he knows or not: YES. 1000 times yes. I think Legolas knows what his parents are up to and chooses to politely ignore it. He could give me the "omg you slut" look all day. I don't care.
éowyn and faramir but it's at aragorn's coronation and while he doesn't actually walk in on you or interrupt, it is unfortunately how éomer found out his sister was engaged: I don't think I want to do that. Eowyn and Faramir should have some time to themselves first :)
arondir and his guard friend whose name i forgot but they make you go on a run with them at 6 a.m. the next morning: No. There are very few reasons I would ever go on a run, and there are fewer reasons I would be up at 6am. Combine the two and you got me hysterically laughing in your face at the suggestion.
galadriel and thranduil but you have to do it in rivendell because they both kept arguing about whose kingdom had the better "👁️ elf 🫦 toys 👁️" and you end up having to explain the reason for your visit to elrond: I would give a public speech about the reason I am in Rivendell if that means a threesome with GALADRIEL AND THRANDUIL. Heck, I would invite Elrond to join if that makes him feel any better.
arwen and aragorn but the whole thing is just a ruse to get him to shower and you spend at least 39% of the time doing looney tunes-esque schemes with arwen to push him into the lake while he's distracted. Pros: you get unexpected shower sex and he doesn't smell like horse: I would absolutely help Arwen. This man needs to shower. The threesome would just be an added bonus to that. Seriously, Aragorn needs to shower.
glorfindel and elrond but you spend a good portion of your energy trying to avoid touching glorfindel's hair so he doesn't get upset but it is Very Long and there's A Lot Of It so it's like that one tiktok game where you tie a bottle to a ceiling fan and try to avoid getting hit. Pros: extra adrenaline: I will braid his hair out of the way. If that bothers him he can punish me. 10/10 I would smash them.
beren and lúthien but huan keeps scratching at the door to be let in: I feel like it would be awkward because the dog can actually talk??? But no, I don't think I could get in the mood with that permanent distraction.
isildur and valandil but ontamo finds out and he's not upset or jealous (he is canonically engaged) but is nevertheless a little put out that he wasn't invited: I don't want to come between the Numebros (pun intended). Also I am not into any of them (Isildur's dad can get it tho)
rings of power elrond AND lotr trilogy elrond: If we leave the moral implications aside (self-cest?) then yes, 100%. I think that Elrond would be a very attentive lover. But TWO Elronds??
fëanor and nerdanel but they get divorced immediately afterwards and while it definitely was not because of you and they both assure you of it fingolfin starts high fiving you every time he sees you and it's getting a lil awkward: Okay I am still laughing about that one. WHAT THE FUCK. I would smash them. I would also both smash them individually after the divorce. They had their issues, I don't care. Plus, high fiving Fingolfin 24/7 would be absolutely hilarious
any two characters of your choosing but you have to do it in erebor while smaug is asleep and if you wake him up you will both absolutely die: Bold of you to assume Smaug wouldn't join (hello ao3 history). Allow me to set the scene. Feanor and Thranduil, both obsessed with shiny things. Not only would we fuck in Erebor, we would do it on top of the whole hoard. It's giving inappropriate use of the Arkenstone. And honestly, if Smaug wakes up and does not think "oh my this is hot, I want to watch" but instead decides to kill us all, I think Thranduil and Feanor could handle a dragon easily. If not, it would have been worth it.

Will never not go insane about how Aragorn literally uses his last breath to kiss Arwen's hand.
***
The death scene is very uncomfortable for me on some levels (I really think Tolkien would have written it differently if his world was as pro-euthanasia for the elderly as ours is), but this is such an unspeakably beautiful moment.

lotr with bluegrass music or instead of a ring gollum has a banjo
Arwen chased by the Nazgul while Foggy Mountain Breakdown blasts in the background (sorry, I don't make the rules, that is *THE* chase song). Haunting high lonesome harmonies instead of the ethereal fantasy vocal music. Ralph Stanley's singing "O Death" or something when Gandalf falls into the deep with the Balrog. Concerning Hobbits is fiddle-based and keeps that lilting folksiness. Hmhm. I was screwing around, but some of this could actually work. ;)
I think I want to use this opportunity to be as obnoxious as possible and assign instruments to the Fellowship. Because the Fellowship of the Ring is a bluegrass band now, right?
------
Sam: Rhythm guitar, because that is the ultimate rhythmic support instrument and Sam is the heart and support of the group
Frodo: Lead vocals and guitar, because the Fellowship focuses around him
Merry: Mandolin. An instrument that can easily shimmer into the spotlight, take the lead, or support in the background.
Pippin: Bass. The instrument that doesn't get as much appreciation as it should and contributes more than non-musicians realize (says the person with heavy pro-Pippin bias <3 ) (yeah yeah yeah bass is a foundation instrument and Pippin isn't the foundation but shhhh)
Aragorn: Fiddle, which has been around forever in the heart of American folk music, the true king of the instruments, around which bluegrass was built (or so Father of Bluegrass Bill Monroe claims)
Legolas: Banjo, because he needs to be as dramatic and fabulous as possible, and even if you're just playing straight chords, banjo sounds so ridiculous people will stare at you
Gimli: Also banjo, first because it's as big and obnoxious as an axe, second because almost no one wants two banjos in a bluegrass band; this gives ample opportunity for him and Legolas to conflict
Boromir: Fiddle, because two fiddles are fantastic in a band, and everyone mourns the loss of its simultaneous leadership and harmony when the second fiddle fades
Gandalf: The manager herding everyone to get from one gig in Town A to another gig in Town B
#what have I done#LOTR#Lord of the Rings#The Lord of the Rings#non-dragons#not sure I LOVE these roles but they're what I came up with while on the work clock#(shhhhhh I'm totally getting work done <.<)#Tolkiendom#Middle Earth#The Fellowship of the Ring#Fellowship of the Ring#too lazy to tag all the chars#my joking around is on the Jackson movie characterizations for any who doth protest#bluegrass#thatbanjobusiness#that banjo business#if I were still in a phase of lots of free time for editing I think I'd be annoying enough to edit some new background music onto clips

my friend sent me this dilemma in the group chat the other day, and i have to say… i’m picking 9. i’m gonna have so much fun pranking everyone on the rest of the plane before the balrog inevitably hijacks it as a result of something pippin did while we were out of our seats, and nearly kills us all (thanks gandalf).
will it be insufferable sitting in front of aragorn and arwen? probably. but it could be worse. we could be behind them. and you KNOW none of us are staying in our seats the whole flight, we’re gonna collectively migrate to 10 to bother gandalf and sam and boromir and just generally be bastardous little gremlins. That said, my rationale (which I was asked for as our group chat’s local LOTR expert) is as follows…
Balrog. This foe is beyond any of you. Do not sit here. I can only assume things are chill until Pippin does SOMETHING to set the balrog loose from these presumably god-tier seatbelt-plot-devices keeping all the bullshit contained.
Treebeard. EXCEEDINGLY chill, if you like poetry.
Frodo. This could either be very chill, or ZERO chill, depending on where you are in the journey. The pro play here is to trade seats with Sam. I mean really what kind of monster separated these two.
King Theoden. If it wasn’t for literally everything going on AROUND this seat, it would probably be okay.
Éomer. Again, if not for everything going on AROUND this seat, this would be one of the best in the house.
Boromir is going to die before this flight is over unless you somehow kill the Uruk-hai sitting next to him.
In the middle of Galadriel and Sauron??? I haven’t even read the Silmarillion yet and I know better than to sit here.
Aragorn and Arwen are going to be making out and crying about it the whole time. 0/10, do not sit here, they won’t even ask you to join.
Merry and Pippin. You are about to get SO high and have the BEST time, until they decide to steal Gandalf’s fireworks and set them off mid-flight.
Sam and Gandalf. I hope you like gardening and tall tales. Objectively one of the best seats in the house for real, I love Sam, but I’d rather be menacing him from seat 9.
Legolas and Gimli. They will be arguing over you like an old married couple the entire time. You don’t want to get involved, but they’re GOING to get you involved.
Lord Denethor and Faramir. Depressed idiot bastard who thinks he’s king, and his abused neglected son. I would only pick this seat for the opportunity to KILL DENETHOR. 🔪🔪🔪
The Witch King and Eowin. Do not sit here, unless you are no man and can help her kill this nazgûl bastard. As a genderfluid person, there’s like, at least a 25% chance at any given time that I might not qualify, so, sorry bestie but also? I know you’ve totally got this.
The King Under The Mountain. Are you Aragorn? No? And he’s distracted making out with Arwen? Don’t sit here.
Galadriel’s husband?? I don’t remember his name. It’s been a minute. This is probably fine though so long as you’re cool with Galadriel.
Lord Elrond. He’s cool, but probably busy glaring at Aragorn from across the aisle.
17. Uh. Well. That’s… Literally All Of The Nazgûl. What can I really say, except… You’re fucked, man. Do not sit here.
Though I’d be lying if I said my brain didn’t immediately pull this post up out of the abyss upon seeing the placement of Seat #17.

"Would you fuck a clone of yourself?"
Aragorn: Yes.
Arwen: No.
Gimli: I don't want to fuck my clone because that would be gay sex and I'm not gay.
Merry: I'm not gay, but I would actually totally fuck my clone.
Legolas: I'm gay, but I still don't want to fuck my clone, that's gross and weird.
Frodo: I don't want to fuck my clone because my self-loathing is THAT strong.
Pippin: It's basically the same as masturbating, right? So no big deal.
Faramir: It's not the same as masturbating. It would be like having sex with your twin. Wrong and bad!
Éomer: Not only would I fuck my clone, I'd probably make a bunch of clones and just get it on with all of them at once because that's how pro-clone fucking I am.
Boromir: You guys are nasty and I'm, frankly, a little concerned.

The one post to rule them all: a comparison between LOTR and ACOTAR
Disclaimer: this is just my opinion about how the azriel pov mirrors the trio between Aragorn, arwen and eowyn and is a very LOOSE theory which means they are not a copy of each other and it’s my interpretation. If you are pro gwynriel i suggest you to ignore this post because i’ll be talking about the similarities between the LOTR trio and the one in ACOTAR. Also i’m following mostly the movies but i’ll add extracts from the books to make my point. Again, i know LOTR is huge and i don’t want to offend anyone.
Disclaimer 2: i’m aware of the meaning behind arwen’s name and how some things might parallel gwyn ,however, this is my interpretation of the context and if you think the opposite you are more than welcome to create your own post. This is meant for elriels and elriels only. I think that’s all. That being said welcome :D
This whole post is about the similarities between Aragorn/Arwen/Eowyn and the whole Elain/Azriel/Gwyn. I want to clarify that i believe elain story is next and it’s about her choice but i’ve noticed some similarities between the dynamic in LOTR and the dynamics we see in ACOSF, but mostly in azriel POV. Again, this is a very loose post and it’s based on my interpretation. I want to start with the key players and why they are similar:
Arwen/Elain:
While they are vastly different i found arwen’s and elain’s arc intertwined. In the books Tolkien describes arwen as:
‘’ a quiet person, but not a shy one, rather with the profound gravitas of someone who has a youthful visage but the wisdom that only comes from a long life’’
(FRODO UPON HIS FIRST MEET WITH ARWEN, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING)
While elain is not as old as Arwen (who had a pretty long life before frodo’s journey has started) they are both described as shy and quiet. They are rather observant and they don’t play a big role in the series. Arwen plays a bigger role in the movie and i think Elain is going to play a bigger role in the upcoming books. They are both gorgeous (hello, liv tyler is STUNNING) and they are both made fun of due to their hobbies and their minor roles in the story.
In LOTR ,arwen doesn’t play your average role. She doesn’t go to war like other females and she doesn’t fight with a sword. I’m going to use an extract from one tumblr page i’ve read so you can see arwen’s main role:
‘’She doesn’t go riding off to war like Eowyn and she doesn’t run a country like Galadriel; she’s the courtly ideal of a noble lady who sits quietly at home, being beautiful, and waits for her man to go out and defeat the dark lord.
What that assessment misses is what it cost Arwen to do that and what else she does.’’
Source: lawyernovelist on tumblr
I highly encourage you to read the post above ,so you can see how arwen’s role was important in the whole middle earth story, even if it was minor. As you can see, like elain, she’s someone who is supposed to be sat down at home while looking pretty and waiting for her man to come. This heavily mirrors Elain, a beauty who was brought up as a tool to get a good marriage. Both Arwen and Elain are feminine, shy, quiet and not warriors.
However they have other strengths that need to be noted. Neither Arwen or Elain carry a sword, however they play a big part on the upcoming wars. First, we have arwen. People believe Arwen did nothing because she wasn’t at the front in the middle of the war but in the fellowship of the ring she rides with frodo and faces Nazgul. She uses her power in the river to SAVE frodo (who is the main hero) and makes sure to take him safe and sound to Rivendell. Mind you, the Nazgul are extremely powerful and there’s 7 of them against Arwen and a dying Frodo.
During ACOWAR, Elain is the one who has visions about the future and who locates and tracks down the cauldron. Like Arwen, she’s not a warrior, she’s not on the battlefield but she gets the job done and helps everyone by having those visions.
Also during the big war, people believe all Arwen does is stay at home and they mock her because she loves embrodiery. Both Arwen and Elain enjoy hobbies that are often dismissed and overlooked and made fun of because they are not funny or adventorous. But like Elain, Arwen’s hobbies play a big role in the war:
‘’She also creates a banner for Aragorn and sends it to him.
I can already hear the response that sitting and doing embroidery is not that much different to sitting and waiting. But that banner is actually really important. That’s the thing that marks Aragorn’s identity as he leads the ships up from the south. That’s the thing that puts hope into the defenders of Minas Tirith. Without that banner, Aragorn’s just a random human leader. Helpful, but lacking the massive impact his arrival actually had. Arwen made that banner for him as a symbol of her hope and faith in him and so that he could fly it at the exact right moment to bring victory out of defeat. And that was what it did. It’s not slaying the Witch-king or casting down Dol Guldur, but it’s certainly not nothing.
Arwen may have been quieter, acting in more of a supporting role, but she nonetheless used that role to powerful effect. She is determined, warm, loving, filled with integrity and dignity. She stands up for her choices and takes the rougher path. She does not fit the mould of a Strong Female Character, but she is nonetheless strong in her own way and should not be disdained or dismissed.’’
Source: Lawyernovelist on tumblr
Much like Elain ,they both play a role behind the scenes. Elain with her visions and arwen with the banner that later on, aragorn would use in the battle. They are not fighters but their strength and their power is different.
Arwen and Elain have more in common than what we think. While Tolkien didn’t give Arwen a major role, he gave her an interesting storyline. And her storyline had to do with choice. Arwen’s journey is about her choices. Is about her coming to terms with what she wants vs what she’s supposed to do. Arwen is the daughter of Elrond and she grew up with her grandma. However, her destiny is to leave middle earth and go to the undying lands with her kind. Arwen is meant to fullfill her dad’s wishes and what others expect of her. But in the end, all of her journey lays down to one thing: choice. And arwen wants to stay with aragorn. She’s torn because she has to lose her dad and she loves him very much. She’s someone who wants to make her dad happy and who wants to follow her people. Elrond encourages her to leave middle earth several times:
‘‘Elrond: "Arwen. Tollen i lû. I chair gwannar na Valannor. Si bado, no círar." (Arwen. It is time. The ships are leaving for Valinor. Go now, before it is too late.)
Arwen: "I've made my choice."
Elrond: "He is not coming back. Why do you linger when there is no hope?"
Arwen: "There is still hope."
(LOTR: THE TWO TOWERS SCENE)
And then we have sweet Elain saying this in ACOWAR:
‘’It's already ended badly. Now it's just a matter of deciding how we meet the consequences.”
(ELAIN ARCHERON, ACOWAR)
The choice that Arwen has to make is not an easy one. Either she follows her destiny and what her dad has prepared for her, or she stays in the middle earth with a man who will die eventually. Elain has to choose between what the cauldron had for her since ACOMAF or the guy she actually wants canonically. But in the end, both arwen and elain have to face one thing: choosing her future. And for Arwen it won’t be easy either:
‘’Here you will dwell, bound to you grief, under the fading trees, until all the world has changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent."
(LOTR, THE TWO TOWERS)
Both Elain and her have to make a decision that will affect their lives forever. Arwen would give up her own inmortality, her family and her own dad and elain will have to pay a cost for choosing her true love, but what’s important is that these two characters have to make decisions for themselves and face the consecuences. Both had a path written for them and they never had a choice. Arwen had to follow her dad and go to the Undying lands and give up her love for Aragorn; Elain had to grow up and marry a man and live with him just because that’s what her family expected of her. And now, the cauldron and everyone is encouraging her to follow the mating bond and give up of anything else. To do what’s expected of them. For Arwen i,s to go to the undying lands and reject Aragorn; for Elain is to follow the fae rules and accept a bond with a man she didn’t choose and who was thrown at her randomly after her most traumatic experience. We don’t know what would elain do but we know what choice Arwen made and i think it’s POWERFUL. When faced with the consecuences of her choice this is what she says:
‘‘Mine is the choice of Luthien, and as she so have I chosen, both the sweet and the bitter.”
ARWEN, LOTR.
You can see that the message is there: choice. For her, for her future, for her own mortality and for her undying love towards Aragorn.
Aragorn/Azriel:
While i believe their journeys are vastly different, there’s some similarities between aragorn and azriel that are worth mentioning:
‘’A quiet, almost brooding individual, Aragorn seeks only the company of a select few people who he can trust’‘
Like Aragorn, Azriel is someone who is extremely quiet and who doesn’t trust a lost of people but he’s loyal and loves the ones he’s close with. Aragorn and azriel didn’t grow up in easy conditions but both found a family and a purpose. Aragorn was meant to be the king of gondor and i think azriel will play a bigger role in the upcoming books. What it’s interesting about these two is their constant feelings of unworthiness and how they are a current theme throughout the series. We know that azriel feels unworthy of anyone’s love. He’s afraid of his scars and how people would perceive them. We know he believes the cauldron is wrong but he also believes he’s not worthy of elain at some point. Aragorn was a little bit luckier in the romance department (because his relationship with arwen was established really early on in the story) ,but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t feel this way. A recurrent Aragorn theme is how he feels unworthy of being a king and a leader. His ancestor Isildur failed with the ring and he believes he might succumb to it’s power at some point. He feels weak and carries the burden of his ancestors and it takes him a long time to accept himself ,not only as the king of Gondor but also as someone worthy of love and respect despite Isildur’s actions.
‘’A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship. But it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down. But it is not this day! This day, we fight!”
(LOTR, THE RETURN OF THE KING)
Eowyn/Gwyn:
Like Aragorn and Azriel, Eowyn and Gwyn might not have a lot of things in common but i think there’s a few worth mentioning.
Both Eowyn and Gwyn live a very secluded life for different reasons. Eowyn has to stay with her uncle in Rohan and she barely leaves the palace due to her uncle’s sickness.
‘’What do you fear, lady?' he asked. 'A cage,' she said.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
Gwyn had a traumatic event that led her to the safety of the library and the priestesses, however we do know she wishes to leave the library and to be a warrior. Eowyn, on the other hand is trapped because Wormtongue has a hold of her uncle and she needs to take care of him and his destiny:
‘’Oh, but you are alone. Who knows what you have spoken to the darkness, alone, in the bitter watches of the night, when all your life seems to shrink, the walls of your bower closing in about you, a hutch to trammel some wild thing in? So fair, yet so cold like a morning of pale Spring still clinging to Winter's chill.’’
(WORMTONGUE TO EOWYN, LOTR, THE TWO TOWERS)
Both Eowyn and Gwyn share a kind spirit and a wish they want to fullfill. They want to fight. They want to be seen. They want to leave their mark in the world one way or another. Eowyn secretly trains and knows how to use a sword. She wants to go to the battle and even though she’s been secluded her whole life, she’s determined to fight alongside the men. Gwyn is determined to win the Bloodrite alongside her sisters and to prove all of the Ylirian males that she’s worthy as well.
“And she answered: 'All your words are but to say: you are a woman, and your part is in the house. But when the men have died in battle and honour, you leave to be burned in the house, for the men will need it no more. But I am of the House of Eorl and not a serving-woman. I can ride and wield blade, and I do not fear either pain or death.'
(EOWYN, THE RETURN OF THE KING)
‘’I want to take the road that no one dares travel, and I want to travel it with you two. No matter what may befall us. Not as Illyrians, not for their titles but as something new . To prove to them, to everyone, that something new and different might triumph over their rules and restrictions.”
(GWYN, ACOSF)
As you can tell both have a common goal. To prove man kind that they are worthy, that they can fight and held a sword and that they have wishes and dreams that can be achieved. Eowyn defeats the dead king in the iconic:
Both Eowyn and Gwyn proved that they can fight in a male centered world and thats why i think they are alike.
THE NECKLACE, THE PARALLELS AND THE AZRIEL POV:
While i personally do not believe the necklace would play a big part in the upcoming ACOTAR books, i think it’s interesting to mention a few things:
Azriel POV starts with him giving a necklace to Elain. He bought it with a clear idea and it reminded him of her. It was a thing of secret, lovely beauty and it represents elain.
In the books, Aragorn gifts Arwen a ring that symbolizes their love and potential engagement, but in the movies they changed it to a necklace. Why it is so important?. Well because there’s some parallels between the necklace and the meaning and the consecuences:
-In ACOSF, Azriel gives elain a necklace that embodies what she represents. it has a rose, and it’s something that he gives elain after sharing some glances and delicate touches. They are not in a relationship, but it represents something. It’s the first gift azriel gives her during solstice and it’s something that he bought with elain in mind.
Now the necklace that Arwen gives Aragorn is called the ‘’Evenstar’’. It represents light and the unconditional love that she has for him. However, the interesting thing about this necklace is that much like Rhysand, Elrond is not happy with the romance between her daughter and Aragorn. He’s not as mad as rhysand because he’s more controlled but he constantly reminds Arwen of the dangers of staying with him. Rhysand reminds azriel that elain’s destiny is tied to lucien and the mating bond so both men have to see the fate of the women they love growing apart from them:
-Elain has to be with Lucien because that’s what the Cauldron choose.
-Arwen has to leave the middle earth to go to the undying lands and aragorn has to make peace with it
‘‘You are to stay away from her’‘
(RHYSAND, ACOSF EXCLUSIVE BAM POV)
(ELROND TO ARAGORN, THE LORD OF THE RINGS)
While different, the message is pretty similar. We have two really powerful authorities figures (rhysand, high lord of the night court; elrond, a noble half elf) telling someone with less power that they are to stay away from their love interests. Elrond does’t forbid aragorn or arwen to stay away from each other; in fact he’s aware of it and allows it to happen. However, like rhysand, elrond makes a big effort to remind aragorn that arwen has another destiny; her path is written and it’s tied to her people and what she’s supposed to do. Elain, has to follow the fae rules because she has a mate and can’t be with anyone else. Both aragorn and azriel are being constantly reminded by others that the women have other plans and they are not supposed to be part of them. Arwen has to choose inmortality and Elain has to choose a mate.
Then we have eowyn and aragorn. Eowyn is fascinated by aragorn upon their first meet. We don’t know how gwyn feels regarding azriel because we don’t get to see her reactions but we know she’s intrigued by him. Something similar happens to eowyn when she first meets aragorn:
‘’she now was suddenly aware of him: tall heir of kings, wise with many winters, greycloaked, hiding a power that yet she felt. For a moment still as stone she stood, then turning swiftly she was gone." (The King of the Golden Hall).
Eowyn is fascinated by Aragorn’s presence and for good reason. She grew up guarded, only knowing the company of her siblings, uncle and a weirdo. Aragorns appears in the scene and he’s older. Extremely attractive. He’s a hero, someone who’s broody and mysterious and someone that notices her.
During the two towers, eowyn is training with a sword. Aragorn clashes his sword with hers and they have a little exchange:
Aragorn : You have some skill with a blade.
Eowyn : The women of this country learned long ago, those without swords can still die upon them. I fear neither death nor pain.
While in the tolkien canon is known that eowyn had feelings for aragorn, in the ACOTAR canon we don’t even know if gwyn feels any attraction towards azriel or any men for that matter. We know that she admires him. We know that he trains her and the others for a while and nesta claims she views him as the new ribbon. But it’s a dynamic pretty much like the one that goes on between aragorn and eowyn:
"You desired to have the love of the Lord Aragorn. Because he was high and puissant, and you wished to have renown and glory and to be lifted far above the mean things that crawl on the earth. And as a great captain may to a young soldier he seemed to you admirable. For so he is, a lord among men, the greatest that now is. But when he gave you only understanding and pity, then you desired to have nothing, unless a brave death in battle. Look at me, Éowyn!" (The Steward and the King)
Gwyn views Az as this figure who she can challenge. Someone who is powerful and she desires to prove him wrong. Much like Eowyn, she wants to be seen in a world where the males are predominant. Eowyn has her first encounter with Aragorn and Gwyn does it with azriel after being secluded for many years. Sure, Eowyn is way more developed than Gwyn in the tolkien canon but i believe their relationship mirrors the one that aragorn and eorwyn shared.
Aragorn was way older, he was wise, he was respectful, he saw Eowyn. Unlike the men around her, Aragorn recognizes her potential. They share a few words here and there, she admires him and he’s charming, mysterious and he’s there. But Aragorn has feelings for another woman. Funny enough, Eowyn finds out about Arwen thanks to:
TADANNN. The necklace. Aragorn is not an idiot and he’s never been rejected so he doesn’t feel the need to regift the necklace but eowyn sees it and knows it belongs to another woman. She knows about arwen because the necklace is there and aragorn is wearing it really close to his heart. It’s awrens gift, it represents their love and compromise but it’s mostly a reminder of arwen and her promise to him.
Also, sarah is a really big fan of tolkien and while i might be reaching a lot i think this is worth mentioning:
‘’It is possible to love more than one person (of the other sex) at the same time, but in a different mode and intensity. I do not think that Eowyn's feelings for Aragorn really changed much; and when he was revealed as so lofty a figure, in descent and office, she was able to go on loving and admiring him. He was old, and that is not only a physical quality: when not accompanied by any physical decay age can be alarming or awe-inspiring. (The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, letter 234)’’
Disclaimer number 2338223: I don’t think gwyn has the same feelings for azriel as Eowyn did for aragorn nor do i think she views az the same way. Also i don’t think every character needs to have a li and i don’t think sarah set the dynamic between those two the same way tolkien did. My point is that i think both females might view the guys under the same light. With admiration, respect and maybe as a crush. Eowyn liked aragorn but we don’t know if gwyn has any sort of feelings towards azriel since it was never implied and in azriel pov she was there. This theory is just my opinion on the events but i don’t know what sarah is going to do with gwyn in the upcoming books!.
I don’t think gwyn loves azriel in any shape of form. I don’t even think she likes him that much but like eowyn she might be intrigued by someone who’s older, inspiring and respectful. And i believe much like eowyn, she would find someone else at some point or maybe not. Both are fine btw. For Aragorn, Eowyn might have been a good match. She was a royal, she was the lady of rohan and most importantly she was human. Unlike Arwen, Eowyn didn’t have to give up her life to be with him. Aragorn was born to rule gondor and a potential alliance with rohan would have benefited him. But aragorn wanted arwen and Eowyn had another man waiting for her somewhere else (even if she wasn’t aware.( And even if she didn’t find Faromir let’s be honest, eowyn would’ve been fine). Someone who was way more fitting and someone who was not in love with another woman and that’s what she deserved.
Again, the eowyn/aragorn part might be a reach because their relationship was way more established than the one az has with gwyn (he doesn’t even consider her as a friend) but i thought this is the route sarah might take in the future books because some casual viewers thought aragorn could choose eowyn in the end instead of Arwen. But it was a red herring and they weren’t meant to be together, even though they shared some scenes and some moments that might be misleading. Arwen was away and out of reach so tolkien could’ve used eowyn as the one for aragorn. But arwen was there before, in his mind and in his heart. And in the end, arwen chose aragorn. She chose a mortal life for him and because she wanted to make the choice that was best for her. And i hope elain would make the choice that she wants in the future as well.
I believe that’s all! I hope you enjoyed this little post. I apologize for any grammar mistakes. English is not my first language so i was sweating while making this. I wanted to write a parallel between faramir/lucien but my fingers are too tired right now. i hope you enjoy this little rant and mess and if you love LOTR and acotar i truly hope you loved it!

thinking about how Arwen is so radically pro-life that she sees a vision of a child, a son she could maybe potentially have with Aragorn, and she rides out to her father and tells him she will not leave to go to Valinor but that she will choose to die in Middle-Earth with the love of a mortal and suffer what fate she may--because there is death, yes, but there is also life, and there is still hope and she will die for that love.
I don't care how many people overlook Arwen or only give her credit for carrying Frodo to Rivendell and calling down the waters of Bruinen. For as softspoken and gentle and beautiful as Arwen can be, she is fiercely determined to stay steadfast in her love, even if it means a sacrifice.

Agree he should be pro Aragorn the whole way. I mean the LOTR movies also ignore Elrond is an half elven half man so there's no reason he'd be treating Aragorn that way, along with constantly sending Arwen away and even lying to her about seeing Eldarion, that's not what Elrond would do at all.
Very Thingol behavior, I can't agree more. I mean Thingol and Elrond should be literal opposites on anything so that makes no sense.
But also I feel Rob!Elrond is just kinder and gentler but also a crazy good fighter which is Elrond's point, Elrond is like a gentleman and a scholar but also one of the best warriors, often judged for being half elf but actually the best of elves and men, basically.
say what you will about rings of power but I think we can all agree that elrond
