“I’ve just upset the entire history of the future,” said Mort. “Yes?” “You see, when he tried to kill her I killed him, but the thing is, according to the history she should have died and the duke would be king, but the worst bit, the worst bit is that although he’s absolutely rotten to the core he’d unite the cities and eventually they’ll be a federation and the books say there’ll be a hundred years of peace and plenty. I mean, you’d think there’d be a reign of terror or something, but apparently history needs this kind of person sometimes and the princess would just be another monarch. I mean, not bad, quite good really, but just not right and now it’s not going to happen and history is flapping around loose and it’s all my fault.”
Mort (Terry Pratchett)
This is what it looks like, when fictional history's written by a person, who knows a thing or two about the real one, and doesn't care to preach about morality instead.

"What made you decide to become a wizard?" [...]
"It's indoor work with no heavy lifting," said Cutwell. "And I suppose I wanted to learn how the world worked."
"Have you succeeded, then?"
"No."

a change in nature +18 (shuri x reader)
you had picked on some hints before but this all and in all was a bit strange. the late nights, the certain wardrobe, the way she talked, something about shuri was just different; you had just chalked it up to her being eccentric in some ways, only to fine out the actual truth— it’s more likely she was vampire. but, it didn’t scare you, it was actually exciting.
vampire ! shuri what the fuckkkk, i know this is a little out there but this is just an AU i had gotten requests for and it kinda had me like 👀👀 anyways the reader is a royal figure, not explicitly a princess but you’ll see.
warnings; LOTS OF BLOOD— like descriptions, talk of periods/cycles, bleeding all that jazz (she’s a vampire so yeah), soft top! shuri x sub! reader, overstim, multiple orgasms, pet names, name calling, established relationship, scent kink, praise kink, blood kink, pain kink, descriptive biting, strap on sex, some magical elements, vampire rules, possessive sex, slight breeding kink, squirting, semi mating ritual, aggressive sex, dumbification, drooling.
song inspo: draculas wedding by OUTKAST ft kelis

it starts with a simple joke.
shuri is enthralled with you, completely captivating you under your sheets, your hands grabbing at hers while you’re finishing against her mouth. you whimper once you’re done, and shuri pulls away, sighing and kissing your clit and you jerk a bit, overstimulated and sighing.
she comes up to you, mouth still wet, kissing you and holding your face still. she bites at your lips and you smile. she had always had a habit of doing that; biting at you and kissing your lips when she bit too hard. she’d always apologize, a whisper of, “i’m sorry, my love,” then she’d do it again and again. only when you whimper in fake pain does she she stop; because it really doesn’t hurt, in fact it feels good, but you’re afraid you’d scare her off with an admission like that.
she’s biting at your lips once more when you pull away smiling, mouth red and wet. shuri stares at your lips for a second, eyes darkening and licking her own and you chuckle slightly, joking, “you like when i bleed, love?” you say and she looks back up at your eyes and you see it— excitement. maybe even, want.
and you’ve been with shuri long enough to know her and her faces. you know when she’s upset, you know when she’s sad without saying a word and you especially know when she’s excited, when she wants to fuck you until you say stop, and that look, that look— was what you just saw. it’s small flash but you catch it and shuri’s smiling again, wordlessly kissing against you to distract you from her revealing eyes but it stays with you;
shuri likes when you bleed.
you stir a bit, as shuri gets up to clean up and you blink in the information you had just realized. a kink, maybe? you think, watching her move to the bathroom and washing her hands. “should we finish in the garden tomorrow? i think your peonies are overgrown,” she says, smiling and you nod, still not truly hearing her. “yes, we can,” is the small response and your mind is still wondering once shuri is in bed again, tilting you to look at her, “did i bite too hard, again, love? i’m sorry,” she whispers as you suck on your lip.
you blink, nodding, realizing that’s a better reason than what you were thinking. she kisses you softly, so obviously holding back, and you kiss her back. your lips are still bleeding a bit and you can feel shuri suck on your mouth, both to ease you and to get the blood from off of your lip. you moan a bit, pulling back, feeling more heat pool at your stomach like you hadn’t just cum, “we should sleep,” you whisper and shuri nods, breathless and mouth wet, wanting more.
you turn to cut off the night lamp you at your bedside and shuri comes to cuddle up next to you, sighing and closing her eyes. you joke, “what time do you think you’ll actually go to sleep tonight?” and she smiles in the darkness, “hmmm.. 4, maybe 5,” and you laugh a bit in her shoulder, sighing, “you should get that looked at, love, i have no idea how you function with so little sleep,” you whisper back and smile, feeling her smile on your forehead,
“i’m sure i’ll be fine. remember i told you, i hadn’t really gotten a lot of sleep when i was younger either,” she says back and you feel your eyes closing, sleep residing behind them, “i wonder why..” you mumble back before you feel yourself drift.
Tumblr media
you decide to do some research the next day, mind still buzzing while shuri’s in the garden. your library attached to the castle is huge so there’s got to be the book you’re looking for.
you find it, tucked away and placed between a cookbook for witches. you were no stranger to magic and wild like creatures, your mother was a witch and your unknown father had been hinted at being a warlock, it doesn’t surprise you at all that your girlfriend might be.. well, a vampire. it’s just— vampires are extinct, you know this, much like everyone did. driven out by the ever changing and burning sun and being shifted into small communities that grew smaller and smaller by the decade.
maybe not small enough, you thought, flipping through the history book and finally reaching V. this book your mother left you contained all the living families of all living beings. you find it, the longest family tree at the end of the book and low and behold, the udaku name is printed in bold before you. your eyes move lower and lower until you see it,
shuri udaku is the last living vampire in this family. she has survived her mother, brother, father, and cousin.
you blink a bit, mouth slightly opening, and you feel your heart sting. you sigh, shuri had told you that, that she was the last of her family, everyone else passing in such hurtful ways she never told you. you only heard of her mother and brother, her father being distant and her cousin being hot headed as she described, but you had no idea it meant… she was it. you hoped there was a forgotten auntie or loved one somewhere, but your mother’s books never lie, and update to the date. you sigh and close the book, even though you had gotten your answer, you felt sullen.
you put the book down, exhaling. you see shuri through the windows in the garden, picking flowers with her dark jumpsuit and gloves on. you smile, seeing how far she is from the fresh garlic you grew, all her little idiosyncrasies suddenly making a lot of sense; her fashion sense, the way she talks (Gods, shuri’s probably much older than you, you realize), her need to ask you to come in even though you’ve lived together for so long, her biting.
you shudder a bit; you had read up on vampires and biting and mating rituals, how they only bite at a certain time of year and with their mates. you remember during your first year together, how shuri one random summer fucked you nearly everyday it seemed, biting you ever so softly but still keeping you practically strapped to your shared bed, there were few moments you two were apart that summer. you only read about it because you wanted to know if there was a summerly ritual in some way but it wasn’t; the vampire season happened in the winter.
you lick your lips, thinking. it is getting cold, you start, could shuri be close to that time? you turn back around and search the library again, straying to find V, the smallest section there. you chuckle to yourself, your mother nor father cared for vampires; how heated they would be to know one lives in their castle now. you find a small vampire calendar, but it’s nearly 200 years old. shuri’s older than you but not by that much, you conclude, moving it aside.
you find another, so your girlfriend’s a vampire?! the cover reads and you smirk, opening the page and seeing your mother’s handwriting.
“don’t think you could hide a vampire in my house, daughter. even in death, i’ll know,” you read aloud and laugh, your mother always one to get the last laugh. the actual book behind the cover reads, the importance of understanding your vampire partner, a guide to making your home theirs and being apart of their culture.
you smile sadly, your mother still and always looking out for you. you hear the door to the library open, shuri shaking off her gloves and taking off her shades, “darling, it’s freezing out, those poor peonies,” she says, exhausted. you cast a quick hidden spell on the book and place it down, “oh, they’ll be fine. they actually thrive in this kind of weather,” and she nods, smiling.
shuri comes up to you wraps her hands around your waist, leaning down to kiss you softly, “what’re you doing in here, hmm? avoiding your garden and making me do all the hard work,” she mumbles against your mouth and you smile, thinking of the book you had tucked away and shake your head, “no, no i was about to come out, just — mother left me a note, i wanted to read it.” you say and it wasn’t an entire lie, something you knew vampires could detect. you watch shuri closely and she nods, “i understand, what did it say?”
you smile again, “just to take care of you, and how much she loves you,” you laugh out smiling and shuri rolls her eyes, swaying you both, “well i hate to be the one to tell you this, but that was definitely another ghost, my dear, your mother would never,” shuri laughs with you, pulling you away into a kiss, and you smile against her mouth, sighing.
you pull away suddenly, an idea forming. “darling, wait, i have an idea,” you say smiling brightly, and she looks at you puzzled but intrigued, “please, if you could, go into the market and get some lamb. i have the money for it, don’t worry, but i want to make a special dinner tonight,” you say and she smiles, “lamb is expensive, my love, i could buy it if needed—” and you cut her off with a shake of your head, “no, nope, i want to, wanna buy it and cook it, i want to,” your reiterate and she laughs, kissing your cheeks, “alright, alright. do you want the whole thing or just the body?”
you think, grabbing her hand and leading her out the library, she puts her shades on and gives you her coat, “the body, just make sure the butcher cuts the fat, he skimmed on me last time,” you say and smack your lips, and shuri laughs. “alright, understood. what ever is the occasion, if i can ask?”
you smirk at her and walk ahead, skipping a bit, “a celebration, if you will,” you say, walking in the corridor that leads to the main part of the house. you drape her coat over the hanger and see shuri behind you still thinking before she gives up, “i’m stumped. it’s not our anniversary nor your or my birthday, what else is there?” and shake your head, laughing, “if i tell you, it’ll ruin the surprise! go, go get dressed, we’ll talk when you come back,” and you kiss her cheek, skipping away and laughing. shuri stands in the hallway sighing and smiling, before walking away and going to the bedroom to get dressed.
you dash to a bathroom, your hidden spell nearly giving up and reveling your book before you get there. you flip through it, know the page is in here somewhere, you had read it as a child. you find it, page 97, “a traditional and welcoming vampire dish: baked, blooded lamb and thyme potatoes— a meal to show your love and appreciation for your partner’s culture and lifestyle.” you smile, simple and easy instructions, with the help that you’ve baked lamb for shuri before and she nearly tried to marry you on the spot. you read through the ingredients and make sure you have everything. but then you see—
you gasp, opening the door to the bathroom and yelling down the hall, “and be sure to pick up red wine, as well, my love!” knowing she can hear you. shuri yells back, “okay!” and you smile, closing the door and flipping through the book once more.
you get to a chapter named “mating and the sex life of vampires” and blink, biting at your swore lips. should you? it wasn’t necessarily an invasion of privacy, you think, you’re just getting … prepared. you turn the page, reading quickly, as you knew shuri would need your wallet soon since you said you’d pay for the food.
vampires take love and sex very seriously, you read, to them it’s an extension of their love and craving of you, therefore they don’t engage in one night stands or hook ups unlike other creatures and humans. you nod, agreeing like the book can see you. shuri had told you about the two other girlfriends she had before you, all long term relationships that always ended because the girl breaking up with shuri, never the other way around. you wondered if those girls knew shuri was a vampire and the fact that they might and you hadn’t made your stomach bubble in jealousy.
you sigh and continue reading, a typical mating season for a young ~300 year old vampire is during the colder months, starting around October 31. (and please don’t make Halloween jokes to your vampire partner, they don’t enjoy them.) during the colder months, a vampire’s energy is spiked due to the lack of the sun and the frigid air sticking to their skin as opposed to the humidity and aridness of the warmer season, typically drying them out. there is an off period during a young vampires life where they may find the urge to mate during the summer. it usually happens because they’re deeply connected to their partner that their own biological chemistry cannot contain the excitement they feel around their partner.
you gasp, that one summer! you remembered every detail, how shuri wouldn’t let you go, sometimes even to the garden alone, and how many times she had professed her love to you. you first joked that she’s in her period but now you’re wondering if that’s what it all was.
you read on, trying to see if you need anything to prepare. typical vampire mating periods last a month and a half. the vampire may feel deeply connected to you, they may try to hinder you from leaving their side, let alone the house you may share. for the partners of vampires, prepare to be bitten over and over. you gasp a bit, sitting down in the edge of the tub and close your legs to subdue your arousal. she’s going to bite me, you think, reading on.
though your vampire partner may not have their adult fangs yet, typical youth fang sizes are nearly 1 1/2 inches long and half an inch thick. we recommend drinking plenty of pomegranate juice and eating dark chocolate, to increase blood circulation and reduce ache and pain on the areas your partner will bite. vampires enjoy biting at the neck, calves, forearms, buttocks area, inner thighs, as well as stomachs. if the partner of the vampire has a vulva, your partner may enjoy orally pleasing you while on your menstrual cycle. however, it’s usually a vampire to vampire basis thing, as most vampires don’t enjoy it, so remember to as your partner their preferences before the season begins.
you exhale slowly, trying to steady your pacing heart. gods, you couldn’t believe it. your girlfriend was a fucking vampire and she was going to bite you and mark you up and make a mess of you and keep you in bed for days on end and—
a knock at the door stirs you, moving the book away from your lap, and a quick “don’t come in!” leaves your mouth. and shuri laughs from the outside, “i wasn’t, my love, i was just going to say i can’t find your pocketbook, have you got it?” you stammer a bit, shoving the book into the bathroom cabinet and and feeling around your pockets for your wallet.
you open the door, a shy smile on your lips, “sorry, forgot i had it.” and shuri smiles, her coils blocking her eyes a bit and she leans down to kiss you, holding your hands and waist close. it was probably supposed to be a simple good bye kiss, but you’re not letting her away that easy. you tilt your head and deepen the kiss, you sigh against her mouth, pulling her closer and wrapping around her neck and pulling her closer. you open your mouth slightly, her tongue happily invading and you moan softly, feeling her rub up and down your back, lifting your dress to grab at your butt.
you sigh, some of the arousal you felt from your reading coming back as shuri kisses you. you think again, if tonight goes well, she’ll bite you, everywhere, marking up your skin and leaving you breathless and shaking, more than she already does. you moan a bit in her mouth and she smiles against yours, and she pulls away for a bit, “you alright?” and you nod, dazed.
shuri smirks at you, “are you that riled up from one kiss?” you shy and laugh a bit, “maybe,” you whisper back and shuri chuckles to herself, moving and kissing at your neck, holding your waist close with a strong grip, and she backs both of you deeper into the bathroom until you feel your backside hit the sink, “you want some help then?” she whispers into your neck and you nod, running your fingers against the back of her coils to guide her against your neck. she nods back, sliding your dress up and pulling at your underwear, still kissing at your neck and holding you close.
you exhale out moans, sighing a breath of relief once she starts to play with your underwear, moving them aside and sliding her fingers against your lips. you bite your lip, wanting it to be shuri’s teeth instead and you tilt your head, moving hers as well and combine your mouth, kissing her roughly and sighing once she angles her fingers directly at your core, feeling around before sliding her middle finger inside.
you separate, a hushed “fuck,” leaves your mouth against hers and you feel shuri’s smirk. you lean against the sink counter, your hand coming down on it to give you some grounding. shuri comes to your ear, “you’re so wet, my love,” and you shy up, looking away from her as her finger works inside you, moving slowly but with pressure, adding her ring finger along with it. you moan out, taking your hand away from the sink and holding on to her forearm, moving your hips in tandem with her fingers.
your mind wonders, and you think about tonight. what shuri might do to you once you tell her everything, how long she’ll fuck you, how hard she’ll bite you, how she won’t let up. you gasp once she finds your g-spot, “right— fuck, right there, please baby—!” you moan out and shuri nods, fingering you harder, still holding you steady with her other hand and using her palm as something your clit can grind on to. and you do, moving your hips and pussy along with her thrusts and tossing your head back, practically hitting the wall. shuri’s whispering praises in your ear, “so good, sthandwa, you hear how loud you are for me? your pussy is so sweet,” she sighs out and you buck and squeal against her, nails digging into her forearm and neck, bitting your lips until you feel a small trail of blood leave it.
shuri nearly instinctively looks up, probably smelling it, and sighs, fingering your pussy harder and she comes to your mouth, licking away the blood. her tongue on your mouth, licking up your blood and tasting you drives you over the edge, you moan out, no clear warning leaving your mouth and you cum, pussy twitching against shuri’s fingers and body shaking. you dig your fingers deeper into her skin and she kisses at your neck, nearly hiding away as you orgasm washes over you in waves.
shuri coaxes you through out, stopping her fingers and allowing you ride out your euphoria, whispering, “good girl,” over and over in that deep voice that makes you feel like you’re going to cum again. you sigh out in overstimulation once she pulls them out, some of your cum sliding out as well. shuri looks at her fingers, sighing, “oh, you made such a mess, darling,” she patronizes jokingly, and you sigh out a laugh, eyes still closed and mind still coming down to earth. she kisses you deeply, holding on to you and moving you slightly so she can wash her hands. you move slightly, still leaning on her for support and she lets you, drying her hands and holding you steady as you walk out of the bathroom together.
she kisses you in the corridor once your at the door, “i’ll be back, we’ll finish later tonight, hmm?” she says against your mouth and you nod, realizing she has no idea what you have planned.
Tumblr media
when shuri gets back, you start cooking, following the recipe to a t. she tries to investigate the book you have, curiously moving the pages but you always slapped her hand away with your spoon and she’d frown and walk away.
you had read up a little more while shuri was away, both about the recipe and vampires in general. you wanted to do everything you could to make shuri feel welcomed and loved, more than you already did.
the potatoes cooked the fastest, and you reduced them in the red wine concoction the recipe called for, starting the oven and skimming the rest of the fat off of the lamb. shuri sat idly by in the living room, playing music and reading.
you called to her, finishing up seasoning the lamb, “my love, what’re you reading over there?” and she speaks up, “your letters to me,” and you blush. there was a period where you hadn’t known if shuri liked you back or not, and instead of being sane and just asking her, you wrote a bunch of hypothetical love letters to her, all unsent and unsealed until shuri asked you out. you had given all of them to her one anniversary and to this day she cherishes them dearly.
“those are so embarrassing,” you mumble and shuri walks in the kitchen, one in hand, “‘oh shuri my love, how could i stand to live without you? this is torment, whoever is keeping us apart deserves hell,’” shuri reads aloud dramatically and you shout, threatening to throw the pepper at her. she laughs and flinches, “you were so dramatic, sithandwa, and to think i was only down the street, if anyone saw these they’d think i was out to war and couldn’t return to you,” she giggles at you and roll your eyes, face hot, “i was deeply in love with you! i hadn’t any idea what time or space was, all i knew was we were apart and it killed me,” you defend yourself and shuri comes behind you, hugging you as you continue seasoning.
“i know, my love, i’m only teasing. you know i love these, more than anything.” and you roll your eyes, her chin resting on your shoulders as you prepare the sauce. she kisses your neck, holding you close but you don’t miss her hand reaching for the book you still had out. “ay,” you slap her away again, and she sighs, “how important is a cookbook?” shuri huffs, rubbing her hand.
you snark back, “yeah, how important is a cookbook, ms. ‘i need to read it while my girlfriend is clearly cooking’. go and read something else, or — no, actually, set the table please,” you say, distracting her and shuri smiles, rolling her eyes and agreeing to do so, walking away from you and gathering dishes.
the oven goes off maybe fifteen minutes later, just as the wine sauce finishes simmering. you take a swig of pomegranate juice and sneak a bit of dark chocolate while shuri’s turned around. you gather some gloves and open the oven, pushing away the steam and opening the crock pot, admiring your work. you smile, taking the temperature of the lamb before you look back at the book and nod, perfect.
you handle the pot delicately, setting it atop the towels shuri laid out for you on the table and sighing. she turns to you and you smile, dancing with your shoulders before rushing to get the potatoes. you hear shuri’s laugh behind you and you sit the potatoes down next to the lamb, incredibly proud. she speaks first, “now, can i ask what the occasion is?”
you giggle, taking off your gloves, “once that lamb is in your mouth, you won’t even care,” you joke, but inside your stomach was twisting, it was about to happen. you got so wrapped up in cooking that you completely forgot about what you even cooking for. how would you even say it, you start to wonder as you cut the lamb, hey shuri i know you’re a vampire but it’s okay i find it hot, let’s fuck?
you hear shuri stifle a laugh while she gathers her potatoes and you blink, “what?” and she shakes her head, “nothing, love,” but you squint at her and think again, can you read my mind? shuri. shuri, shuriiii laugh if you can read my mind, shuri. shuri i want a kiss, kiss me if you can read my mind. shuri!
you watch her move, sliding past you to get some lamb and you pour some wine next to her. nothing, maybe she just had a thought. you settle, realizing you maybe should’ve read more of that book than just the sexual aspect, and you both begin to eat, shuri’s sweet, “thank you, love,” breaking your trance for a bit.
you both eat in silence, clearly enjoying the meal but you can’t help the hot pool of arousal that sits at your stomach as you think harder and harder about the latter part of the night. if all goes well, shuri’ll… shuri will.. you don’t even know and it’s so exciting, you squeeze your legs together, watching your fork move around your potatoes and you hear, “calm down, darling,” and you look up, eyebrows down.
shuri hasn’t moved, food in her mouth and eyes closed in happiness. lamb was her favorite after all, but you could’ve sworn you heard her speak just now, her voice is unmistakable and it sounded so close, so near you like she was in your head—
you glare at her, “you can read my mind!” you accuse and she blinks at you, smiling, wiping her mouth, “i have no idea what you’re talking about, y/n, why aren’t you eating?” and it’s tearing you up inside, you roll your eyes and groan, “because—! god dammit, okay, i know you’re a fucking vampire alright?! and if you’re gonna do sexy vampire things you should at least warn me!” you spew out, not even entirely meaning to but shuri raises her eyebrows at you in silence and you sit, nervous, maybe you got it wrong—
but she smiles, tucking her head a bit, “why did you wait so long to say something?” she asks, locking eyes with you and you can see now they’re slightly a different color, a deeper red that looks hypnotizing, her already dangerous eye contact making you more nervous than you already are, “i— i wanted you to tell me,” you huff, setting your fork down and finally giving her all your attention.
shuri smiles again, “more than i already practically have? your mother was a witch and you’ve been with me for four years, i thought you’d pick it up but i think last night was the closest you got to even knowing what i was, and even then you thought it was too good to be true,” she outs you and you reel at all the information she’s just given you. shuri’s been dropping hints? how many could you have missed—?
“seventeen,” she answers, eating more lamb and you huff, “don’t — don’t read my mind right now! i’m recouping,” you sigh and and she puts her hands up in defense, going back to eating. you move your legs and settle in your seat better, trying to formulate your questions. “okay so,” you start, “last night, after all that… you knew i knew?”
and shuri nods, “i thought you’d say something then, but you came so hard you wanted to sleep, i’m assuming,” she boasts and you rolls your eyes, “i wanted to do research, actually. i looked up your family this morning,” and shuri nods, silent suddenly. you speak again, “i’m sorry, by the way. i’ve told you that before but now that i know, i.. i’m really sorry, shuri,” and she nods, smiling, “thank you, love,”
you clear your thought, “but really? you’re a full fledged vampire right, like teeth and spikes and garlic and all?” and shuri laughs, and you finally get a glimpse of them, her fangs, they’re sharp but not that big and they fit her face perfectly and you want her to bite you— “yes, complete vampire love, not full fledged but yes,” and you close your legs harder, curiously tilting your head, “why not full fledged?”
shuri shrugs, “never bit anyone,” and you gape at her, mouth nearly hanging open. she shakes her head, emphasizing the point. you stammer a bit, “so— so your previous girlfriends, you guys never—?” and she shakes her head again, “they didn’t know, never told them.” you smile a bit, suddenly proud and happy you were the only one to know.
shuri laughs a bit, “yeah i heard how upset you were at that, why would i have bitten them, love?” and you shrug, not realizing that shuri’s heard your very loud thoughts for who knows how long, “i thought vampires bite their partners,” you say shyly, and shuri moves her hand sides, “sometimes, it’s not an every relationship thing. and it depends on the vampire— me, i wouldn’t waste a fang on them,” she says, a little disgusted and it makes you giggle and you feel bold and ask, “would you bite me?”
and shuri holds your eyes, almost keeping you looking at her, “in a heartbeat,” she whispers immediately back, and you lick your lips and smile, “you can,” you say back, and she nods, “i know. you’ve thought about it a lot, yeah?” she says and you nod, biting your lip and nearly squeezing your dress apart. “i’ve thought about it, too, i’m sure you can assume. i thought i was being really obvious when i would bite your lips but you never said anything so i guess not,”
you shrug a bit, “i thought you just liked my lips,” and shuri laughs, “no, i do, but like.. you’d bleed, i thought that was pretty ‘hey, i’m a vampire,’ but,” she shrugs again. you lick your lips again, “where, um.. where would you bite me?” shuri licks her lips, sitting back a bit and adjusting her top and looking at you. it feels like her eyes can see everything, everywhere apart of you and it makes you shy up even though shuri’s seen you naked, been inside you even, so it shouldn’t be this intense but it’s her eyes, they’re so deep and hypnotic it has you wanting to look away but you can’t. she speaks, “your neck, right where that mole is,” she finally says and you know what mole she’s talking about. you remember that summer shuri had been nearly obsessed with it, fucking you from behind and always having your neck in her mouth and you’d never question it.
you nod, running your fingers across the skin and still holding eye contact, “i did it mean, shuri. i want you to bite me, wherever you want, whenever you need.” you promise and you can see shuri swallow a bit, nodding and still looking at your neck. “yeah?” she asks and you nod, getting up and making your way to her side of the table, wrapping your arms around her neck once you’re in front of her, “yeah,” you whisper back, “i want it so bad, shuri. i want you to bite me and mark me up, i want everyone to know you bit me and that i’m all yours, baby,” you whine out, holding her deep eyes and you see her smile a bit, hands on your waist as she looks up and keeps your close.
she sighs a bit, collecting herself, “y/n, if i bite you .. i won’t stop,” and you lick your lips and nod, practically pushing your whole body on her upper half, “i know, love. so don’t.” you whisper back and she nods, standing suddenly and holding you taught and she finally kisses you, her teeth slashing against yours. you moan unabashedly, holding her tighter, your mind fogging over and body becoming hot.
shuri’s tongue invades your mouth before you can think, and you lick around hers right back, feeling her teeth against your tastebuds and it makes you wetter than you already are, they’re so sharp when they’re actually against you and apparently sensitive, because you hear shuri moan, squeezing at the skin of your ass and it makes you sigh, licking at them more. she pulls away, a small line of saliva connecting the two of you, “fuck,” she whispers out, and you nod, “you wanna bite me here?” you whisper back and she shakes her head, “no, no, wanna fuck you properly, love, wanna do it right,” and you lick your lips in anticipation, “yeah, yeah,” you agree and she turns you both to finally head to your bedroom and you follow her, the lamb you slaved away for left closed on the stove.
when you get to your bedroom, shuri captures your mouth again, pushing back against you and grabbing at your skin. you moan more, loving this new side of shuri, who was always so calculated in never showing you too much of her strength or pushing you now open and out, biting at your lips and letting you lick at her teeth while she grabs at you and keeps you selfishly close. it’s so good, making your poor underwear completely ruined.
shuri pulls your dress up, finding your underwear and sliding them off and slipping her fingers between your lips, adding some pressure on your clit with her fingers and holding your waist with her other hand. you pull away from her mouth and moan out, bucking against her hand and she sighs, beginning to bite at lips like she always does, but she’s not holding back now, her fangs sinking into your bottom lip and it has you tearing up, your brain fogging. you slur out, “fuckkkkkk,” and she nods behind you, pulling away and licking at your lips to get up the wet blood.
she stops touching you all together, you gasping before she practically pushes you onto the bed, you fall back with a slight push, dress pulled up and lip bruised and you look up at her. her eyes are a such a lovely deep red, her fangs are a little bloody and sticking out of her mouth, they look bigger and you remember you had read that— fangs can increase in length once in contact with blood.
she’s back on top of you in an instant, kissing at your neck and opening your legs which you do instinctively, moaning once you feel her run her fangs against your collarbone. you groan, “shuri, please.. just bite me, baby, i can take it,” you sigh out, head back and presenting your neck for her to see. shuri sighs and pulls away to look deep in your eyes, “you’re really sure? because we’ll be bonded for a long time after, baby,” she says, holding your deep gaze.
bonded. bonded. bonded, the word rings in your fogged brain and you nod breathlessly, tilting your head once more and presenting the skin. you hear shuri sigh out a curse, holding the side of your face with one hand while the other holds yours that’s on the bed. she kisses at your neck, sucking slightly, something you knew vampires had to do to get the blood to one area, and it makes you moan, pushing up towards her mouth.
shuri takes a step away from you, sighing, before she opens her mouth again, the ends of her fangs poking at your neck and you gasp, gripping the sheets, anxious. you breathe slowly, remembering what the book said to do; breathe, relax, and wait.
and you do. then you feel it.
shuri’s teeth sink into your skin, breaking the surface layer there and piercing you like a needle. you gasp out a deep moan of her name, and jerk. she holds you close, before you feel her entire fangs in your neck, she starts to suck. you moan, “fuck, baby…” a blissful sound to shuri’s ears, who happily takes all that you have to offer, sucking unabashedly now that the small discomfort you felt is gone. she holds you tighter, squeezing your waist and hands as you sink lower and lower into the bed.
you start to feel dizzy, moaning and panting softly, holding the back of her head and you try to remember what the book said, if it gets too much, let your vampire partner know and they will stop. your health comes first.
and you know it does, but the lightheadedness feels like a fucking drug, shuri’s so close and she smells so fucking good, and you can tell she’s happy, feeding off of you and getting everything she needs and it turns you on, but you can feel yourself slipping away. you moan, “shuri,” it comes out slurred and she moans back, just as dizzy as you are. your eyelids feel heavy and your breathing is slowed, “fuck, fuck, baby, i— unngff, i can’t..” you whimper out, grabbing at her coils and she gets the hint, slowly stopping and taking her fangs out, sitting up to look at you, mouth bloody and eyes wide. she holds your face, “you okay?” she pants out breathlessly, and you nod, falling back on the bed and sighing.
shuri comes above you, kissing your face and thanking you as you recoup. she comes to your neck and kisses the swollen spot there, and you jerk and moan at the sensitivity of it. “thank you, baby, taste so good,” she mumbles against the skin, spreading your legs with her hands and rubbing up your thighs. you’re dizzy and high in arousal and shuri takes full advantage of your state, slipping off your dress and cupping your breasts in her hands, her cold skin making contact with yours.
you moan, “shuri,” you sigh out sweetly and she laughs a bit, leaning over your face and licking her blooded lips, “you okay, baby?” and you nod, hooking your arms around her and kissing her, tasting your own blood against her fangs and moaning. the pain had completely subsided now, thanks pomegranate, and you feel all of your senses come fully back to you, wanting her to bite you again.
she pulls away, “can i taste you again?” she whispers, looking down and you nod, getting the hint, whispering back, “like i said, whenever you want,” and she smiles, bright teeth out and all and it’s a fucking sight, it makes you gasp.
she kisses down your body, moving you out of your underwear and handling your thighs. shuri wastes no time, spreading your legs and biting at your thighs, not leaving a mark but biting none the less. you sigh, your neck aching in a delicious pain that has you moaning when you turn your head against the pillows. she opens you up, sighing at the sight of your leaking pussy and it causes you moan, feeling her huff against your lips. shuri’s always had a fetish for eating you out and you moan at nothing, thrusting your pussy towards her and she shushes you, “oh baby, i know,” she says cruelly and you sigh, sliding your eyes closed.
she finally leans forward, licking up the leaking slick from your lips all the way to your clit and you gasp out in surprise, moaning once she comes to your clit and kisses it softly, sucking and keeping your legs open, you feel your thighs flex under her hands and she uses her strength to keep you open. she sucks harder at your moans, moving her tongue all around your pussy and licking up everything she can. your back arches, holding on to her hands and squeezing, “mhhhgggffffuckkk—!” you moan out loudly and she hums against you, you can hear her in your own head, “let it all out my love,” she’s encouraging and you groan, biting your lips and making the bruises there leak a bit.
she moves one of her hands and slides her middle finger inside slowly, twisting against your walls and making you buck, “fuck, oh fuck, shuriii— right, right there, oh—!” and she keeps up the pace, adding her index finger and holding you still to attack your g-spot with her other hand. you jerk, thighs twitching and you feel your orgasm start to flow through your body, pussy gushing and leaking more and more as shuri’s mouth continues to suck on your clit. you gasp out a small, “cum— cumming, cumming baby—” but shuri’s not worried about it one bit, sucking and unrelenting. you toss your head back and feel yourself squeeze around shuri’s fingers, clit pushing against her tongue and you moan loudly, cumming hard against her mouth.
shuri takes it all, sucking you and making some filthy noises as you come down from your high, whining in overstimulation once you feel it subside. she kisses your clit and you shake, moaning and trying to get away from her mouth before she moves to your thighs and bites you again, sucking at the skin there and you groan, feeling her fangs pierce you again and it makes you twitch, hands gripping against her coils.
this time is a lot faster, she sucks with ease and comes up, slightly bloody and fangs still leaking. she kisses you, dazed and high as much as you are, and you accept, sighing against her lips. she pulls away, sighing and looking deep in your eyes. she smiles, “you alright, baby?” and it’s genuine but you feel fuzzy, shuri’s mouth is nearly dripping with both your cum and blood it’s making your head fog up. she runs her fingers against her lips, and asks again, this time you decide to respond, “yeah, yeah, i’m okay. i’m— fuck, shuri, i’m dizzy,” you admit, eyes closing and she nods, leaning down and kissing your face, “you wanna slow down, then?”
and you shake your head, spinning and closing your eyes, “no, no no baby, please please fuck me, please —” you stammer out and she kisses you to mainly shut you up, youre absolutely rambling and her mouth calms you. you sigh against her, wrapping your arms around her neck and moving against her, your body aching in the sweetest ways.
she pulls away, sighing, “yeah, i’ll fuck you baby,” and you nod, leaning up to kiss her again but she pulls away, getting up to get her strap and you sigh, licking your lips and missing her.
you blink, and wonder for a bit, “shuri,” you call and she responds in the closet, “since we’re bonded, can i read your mind now?” and you hear her laugh a bit, coming back with lube and her strap, boxers and sports bra on.
she shakes her head, looking you up and down and likely admiring her work. “no, it doesn’t work like that, baby,” she laughs out, settling on top of you and smiles, “and i can’t read your mind exactly, you just have very loud thoughts, i can hear you is all,” and you turn your head, curious. “how loud?” you ask and she adjusts herself, opening the lube and thinking, her fang peering out from her mouth a bit and your mouth salivates. “loud. you always want my attention,” she says, lining up against you and you gasp a bit, spreading your legs, moving some of your cum around with the strap and sliding her fingers against the bite mark and rubbing it.
you moan at the stimulation, opening your legs wider and sighing, “shuri, shuri, please,” you whine and she nods, leaning forward and you feel her enter you slow and deep and it makes your back arch, a deep moan settling in your chest. shuri leans down and kisses at the skin there, holding your waist and guiding her dick deeper, sighing against your chest, “fuck, y/n,” and you nod in agreement once she pressed against you completely, all the way inside you.
shuri leans up after settling for a bit, kissing you and opening your mouth with her tongue. you feel her teeth graze against yours again and it makes you moan, moving your hips and wanting her to start. she gets the hint, pulling out and stirring back inside, and you moan right against her mouth, wrapping your arms around her and pulling her closer. she bites at your lips once more and it makes you smile, moaning in her mouth as her thrusts pick up.
you sigh and separate, shuri holding on to the sheets below to continue thrusting, angling harder until— “umgffffuccckkk, shuri, oh fuck—!” and she nods, keeping her sick there and pressing harder, moving back against you and using her hands to lift your hips up and angling better. you can see her bite at her own lips, “right there, yeah?” and you nod, hands grabbing at the sheets as she continues. shuri picks up her pace, gripping at your thighs and leaving imprints and bruises that you know will be there later and it makes you moan, tossing your head back and opening your neck, the mark there aching.
you whine when you feel your stomach stir, your orgasm in the back of your brain but not quite there, “shuri, shuri, fuck, bite— bite me, please, need it, baby, please—” you slur out, begging, and shuri sighs, rubbing against your legs and moving her hand to add pressure to your lower stomach and thrusting harder, “fuck! fuck, fuck, please please, shuri PLEASE, need it need you—!” and you’re reaching up for her now, moving against her thrusts and begging and shuri leans down and finally bites you again, teeth sinking right back into the spot they were earlier on your neck and your orgasm pushes through you full force with no warning. you body stills against her thrusts and you gasp out silently, mouth hanging open and eyes squeezed shut as you cum on her dick, thigh twitching.
she haults her assault as you come down, more enamored with your neck now that anything and it makes you squeal out moans, holding on to her coils with a heavy hand as she sucks against you more and more. she lets you go with a soft call of her name and pulls out, both teeth and strap, and you shudder as she leans up and looks at you. shuri smiles while you twist around, trying to calm your body down and she holds your pliant legs open to see your pussy, leaking and milky white, “fuck, love,” she whispers and sighs, running her fingers through your lips and you gasp, not even able to move away from her, you’re so weak.
she stops, leaning down to kiss at your thighs and rub against the skin, “you alright, sthandwa?” she asks and you nod, eyes still shut and trying to process where you are. she chuckles a bit, coming up to your mouth and kissing, teeth sensitive against yours. “can you lay on your stomach for me?” she whispers against them and you sigh, nodding, your body already ready to go again just at hearing her voice.
you move slowly and shuri helps you, encouraging you and kissing you all the way. she knows you’ve lost a lot of blood and your body is weak, so she’s patient and sweet much like she always is. when you’re finally on display, ass out and pussy gleaming, she settles behind you sighing, spreading you open and rubbing her dick against your entrance. you sigh, bucking a bit, and she soothes over your skin and shushes you, “last time, okay love? you’re doing so good for me, baby, just relax,” and you nod, the praise and love all you need to keep going.
she pushes in, sliding deep inside you with ease and you gasp, mouth hanging and a low moan leaving your chest. you find the sheets between your fingers and shuri comes up to your neck, kissing the skin there and holding you taught. it doesn’t take her long to start a harsh pace, and your eyes weld up as they usually do after going for so long and you whimper, “sh—shuri— shuri, fuckkkkk—” and shuri nods against you, kissing your cheek and holding your hand against the sheets. she knows by now your brain has become absolute mush, she’s fucked into for so long that you can’t keep up, “i know baby, you can take it though, right? be my good girl and take it okay?” and you nod, tears spilling over and your stomach feeling full.
shuri’s thrust become sloppy after a couple of moments and you have just enough thought to know, she’s about to cum. and you grind your ass back against her since your words don’t work, moaning and crying unabashedly out for her and she gets it, “want me to cum inside you, yea? you want it, baby, the say it for me, okay love?” and you gasp out, eyes in the back of your head and your body is glowing, neck aching, “shuri, shuri, fuck, fuck—! please baby, please please cum inside me, bite me, fuck me, make me yours shuri, i— i can’t, i need it, shuri—!”
shuri groans at the sounds your making, leaning down again and finding another spot on your neck to bite down on. she does so your orgasms washes over you once more, she still thrusting and finally cumming herself, and you moan, high pitched and all the way in the air as everything happens all at once. shuri holds you close, her palms making bruises in your hips and she stirs and cums against you.
after a moment, shuri let’s go, teeth releasing your neck and strap sliding out, cum leaking out and your pussy pulses, missing her already. she huffs, turning you slowly kissing you deeply, your blood on her mouth making you dizzy. you fall against the sheets and she falls with, mouths still connected and she’s still holding your hand, squeezing and making sure you’re still all there with her.
you move away first, sighing, “cho—chocolate,” you whimper out and shuri frowns, confused, “do.. do you want some?” she wonders and you sigh, deciding instead to think loudly i need some, my blood is low, and shuri thankfully hears you, letting out an “ohhh,” and getting up, rubbing your back and butt a few times before skipping to the kitchen and getting the bar you had hid behind the ‘cookbook’.
she comes back with water, chocolate, and the book, and settles it all next to you, helping you sit up properly and kissing your hands with soft thank you’s. she scurries to the bathroom, quickly and gets a warm rag and takes off everything, putting on a bit shirt instead, and coming back to lay next to you. you immediately lay next to her, sighing and eating your chocolate slowly, body weak and mind numb.
shuri kisses against your cheeks and holds you close, cutting off the lamp and dabbing your makes with the warm rag so they don’t swell and you moan softly, the skin still sore and aching. she shushes you and you accept it, still not as verbal as you want to be but you think it, “thank you, i love you, i love you, shuri i love you,” and shuri laughs and says it back out loud, kissing you softly.
you look up before your eyes drift and smile, leaning up to kiss her deeply and your loud thoughts make her smile against your lips.
Tumblr media
the next morning, shuri’s making sure you have everything you need to recuperate, always by your side in case you faint or get lightheaded which, according to her, happens more than you think. but you feel fine, a slight ache but your body is up and moving, just a little sore like your girlfriend bit and fucked you.
you ask her a bunch of questions the next day too, mostly out of curiosity. you’re having breakfast in the garden, her shades on and coat hugging her body. “can you turn into a bat?” and shuri laughs, “no, i can’t other some other families can but not mine,”
you think, “what does my blood taste like?” and shuri thinks, swallowing her food, “sweet. like cherries. which is interesting,” and you cock your head so she continues, “well, your lips don’t, those taste like sugar. but you overall taste like cherries. you’re just very sweet, baby,” and you giggle, shy and proud at the same time.
you think, “how long are we bonded for?” and she responds, “6 months, then we do it again in the summer,” and you gasp at her, “wait, so that one summer, you bonded with me and didn’t think to tell me?!” and shuri lowers her eyebrows, thinking, “what summer—? oh! no, i was just on my cycle. i told you that was what it was, remember?”
and you think, sighing, “yes, but i thought you were joking. plus i looked it up, vampire don’t get periods,” and she nods, “no, but we do get cycles. usually it’s just being horny, and it does happen over the winter, like next week, but it can be offset by a partner,” and you nod, drinking, so the book wasn’t lying.
and shuri laughs a bit, “yeah that book is pretty great, i’m happy your mom left it for you,” and you huff, “you knew about that too? how much did you know?” and shuri smiles, “i told you, you have very loud thoughts, i knew most of what you were going to do before you even did it. i specifically waited until you got to the chapter about mating to ask for your wallet, i knew it would throw you,” and you roll your eyes, “whatever, i should be able to read your mind as compensation,”
and she shrugs and laughs, “i’ll just tell you what i’m thinking all the time, hmm? that seem fair?”and you smile, shrugging, “yeah, i guess so,” and shuri smiles with you, teeth out and proud and it makes you smile a bit harder, feeling the ache on your neck settling there.

Mort by Terry Pratchett
According to his response to an ask on Tumblr, one of Neil's favorite books by Terry is Thief of Time. It's the last in the Death series, and the Death series is one of my favorites, so I'm reading/rereading all of them in order, starting with Mort, which was originally published in 1987. A year before I even existed. Three years before Good Omens was published.
Here are some vague thoughts.
A tiny note: while I enjoy the central premise of Mort a great deal, it's got some humor based in racial stereotyping (think Klatchians speaking in overly formal terms and discussing "honor" in a way used to stereotype Eastern cultures on Earth). Fortunately, none of it matters to the plot, but if you find stereotypes frustrating or triggering, you should know they're in the book.
Super simplified summary with spoilers:
Mort is an awkward, thoughtful young man who can't seem to find anywhere to belong in his own community. However, Death decides he wants an apprentice and chooses Mort. Mort meets Ysabell, Death's adopted daughter, instantly disliking her just as she dislikes him. Mort also meets Albert, Death's mysterious servant. Death leaves Mort with the reaping duties while Death curiously explores what human lives and pleasure are about and reveals himself to be rather lonely.
At one point, Mort finds out that Ysabell has been reading people's life stories in Death's domain and leaving their books out when she isn't supposed to; however, realizing this is a sensitive issue for Ysabell, he conceals this fact and takes the blame for it instead, which endears him to her. It turns out Ysabell has been reading about young women's lives on the Disc because she doesn't get to have a proper social life here in Death's domain.
While on the job as the Reaper, Mort tries to save a princess named Keli, whom he is attracted to, when he discovers that she is about to die; he chooses to reap the soul of her assassin instead. But because Keli's death has already been fated, her survival leads to an awkward alternate reality situation, which can only last so long before she dies anyway. Mort and Ysabell frantically attempt to find a way to save the princess for real. During this adventure, Mort bonds with Ysabell, and Keli bonds with a wizard, Cutwell, whom she has enlisted to try to help her be crowned before her imminent death. Most of all, Keli does not want to die without being officially crowned queen. Meanwhile, Mort is slowly being taken over by a part of Death and risks losing himself.
Mort also discovers that Albert is an extremely old wizard who has stayed close to Death as a servant in an attempt to avoid actually dying. While Mort is trying to save Keli, Albert in fact betrays Death, getting a bunch of Unseen University wizards to try to summon and bind Death as an attempt for Albert to escape his servitude and live on the Disc again. However, the summoning just brings Death back to himself after his adventures in human society (he's not happy about this). It also restores Mort to normal, as it summons the portion of Death that was taking over Mort, too. The Unseen University's Librarian keeps Albert from escaping and Death takes him up as a servant once again, seemingly oblivious to Albert's betrayal.
Eventually, it is too late; Keli isn't crowned as queen, reality closes in on them, and they all end up back in Death's realm, facing a Death who has learned about Mort's attempt to tamper with fate and is very angry. They have a duel, and Death wins. However, when Mort points out that he actually understands now what it's like to be Death, Death decides to ask the gods to change fate, so that Mort and the princess both survive. Ysabell has fallen in love with Mort, and he in turn falls in love with her, and they get married. Although wizards can't formally get married, Keli and Cutwell also get together, with Cutwell as "Master of the Queen's Bedchamber."
Themes:
Here are some interesting themes in Mort, each of which charmed me and reminded me a bit of Good Omens in one way or another. Some of them are reminiscent because of their similarities, and some of them are reminiscent because of their stark differences, but they're all fun and interesting.
An immortal being who exists on a scale that is incomprehensible to us humans (that's Death) becomes fascinated by mortal life. He tries a lot of things before discovering that he really loves being a cook at a restaurant.
This immortal being, though well-intended, exerts control over mortal lives in a way that isn't fair or healthy; in the end, though, he puts it right.
"True love" is unexpected and quiet and most of the intimate moments are left to imagination. And yet, by the end of the story, that love is also undeniable.
We've got a situation where a human is trying to take on a cosmic role, and the role starts instead to take over him; the more of Death's job Mort does, the more he begins to embody Death. Ultimately, Mort doesn't triumph over or control this - the Death aspect is removed from him by Albert's summoning spell. Meanwhile, the more Death lives as a human, the more human-like he becomes.
Our immortal being puts in a good word with the gods for our mortal protagonists and succeeds in changing their fates.
Death's loneliness is a recurring issue that comes up. It seems like one of the things that makes him fascinated by humans is their social lives, which he tries to emulate. The moment that seems to push Death to ask the gods for a reprieve for the mortals is Mort pointing out that he may in fact understand how Death feels about reaping.
With that said, the characters' motivations are allowed to drive the story without always being bluntly stated. You can see them, clear as daylight, outlined by the way they define the action, but just as real people don't stand around declaring their intentions, the characters don't say everything they're thinking and feeling. I think this is the standard in both Terry Pratchett's and Neil Gaiman's work, but I'm feeling compelled to mention it.
Ultimately, both Mort and Death are struggling with their "places" and feelings of loneliness. Spending time in each other's roles gives them much-needed perspective. This perspective does not cause them to leave their former roles on the Disc (human and anthropomorphic personification, respectively), but it helps rejuvenate their approaches.
Mort starts the book lonely and lacking in conviction; he figures he might as well become Death's apprentice because he has no other options. Through his adventures as Death's apprentice, Mort bonds with people who are every bit as lonely as he is and gains conviction about the kind of person he wants to be, making a place for himself on the Disc.
Meanwhile, Death starts the book curious about human pleasures, and just when he is beginning to understand them, he is torn away. As a result of this rude reminder that he's outside of human life, Death starts his final confrontation feeling rigid and insistent that fate is written and he must enforce it. It's the very moment Death realizes Mort, a human, might be able to understand him - he isn't completely alone - that he decides to go ahead and ask the gods to change Mort and his friends' fates. It's both understanding and feeling understood that make the difference.
Tying it back to Good Omens:
Naturally, Death of Discworld is an immortal fascinated by humanity, and so are Aziraphale and Crowley. That's a pretty core similarity. So, of all the differences between their places in their narratives, what are the most substantive?
I'd suspect that it is reasonable for Death to remain outside of human society because he represents a real force of nature, an essential part of the universe that life as we know it can't exist without. On the other hand, I think Aziraphale and Crowley have been given contrived jobs; I don't believe the core of the Good Omens narrative holds that it is necessary to split people into Sides, so it makes more sense for there to be upheaval in Heaven and Hell, and for Aziraphale and Crowley to choose not to do their jobs.
Those are my main thoughts for now. The two works really do share thoughtful themes of mortality and love, flavored, of course, with charming absurdity.

Even more OC Icons
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(English under read more)
And with that, that's all the OC icons I've made for now! Well kinda, I also made one of a friend's OC but we'll see at another time if she agrees with me sharing it. In any case, here we have three different projects. First are 6 characters from Terne, my fae story. First are Ateana, the Sun Queen, and then her twin children, Safra and Sadi. The second line is made of Njall, a swordsman from the Snow court, and then Victorine and Tricia from the Moon court. Victorine is the rare human who thrives in fae territory, as well as Kelis' best friend.
After these six, we have three characters from Aux Fleurs l'éternité, a project I'm not sure I'll write but who knows! In order the Nameless Anand princess, Ilkay, and Gwenn. And finally on the last line we have the three characters I liked the best in a project I wrote back in high school. It honestly sucked but I still have a fondness for these three best friends, their names are Aisia, Skaï and Ezra.

Mort!
Mort is definitely one of my favorite Discworld characters, alongside Captain Carrot and Rincewind. I love characters that are just Some Guy
Loved the descriptions of Death's domain- the hall of Lifetimers and the library were really cool
Death- and elements of his domain- really reminded me of Gaiman's interpretation of the character. I could absolutely believe that they were the same person represented in different dimensions
I do wish that Ysabell and Princess Keli got more character development; Ysabell especially. I mean, Deaths adopted daughter? She's been 16 for 30 years? Never even been to the real world? She'd be Weird As Fuck
I also wish that Mort had a bit more motivation for rescuing Princess Keli- the teenage infatuation didn't quite cut it for me
I do think her solution to being Technically Dead and having everyone ignore her was very funny
Also enjoyed Death exploring life a little bit, and ending up as a short order cook
Rincewind cameo!!!!!
The fight between Mort and Death was cool
Death seriously needs to take some vacation days. Also he needs to adopt a cat (or twenty). Maybe joing a union.
And thems my thoughts on Mort! Feel free to leave a recommendation for which Discworld I should read next (and check my tag to see which ones I've already read).

"How do you know?"
He wondered if he could get away with saying something like, I'm a wizard, we know these things, but decided against it. The last time he'd said that she'd threatened him with the axe.
"I asked one of the guards about that inn Mort talked about," he said. "Then I worked out the approximate distance it had to travel. Mort said it was moving at a slow walking pace, and I reckon his stride is about--"
"As simple as that? You didn't use magic?"
"Only common sense. It's a lot more reliable in the long run."

TAYLOR READS 2024: MORT BY TERRY PRATCHETT
Tumblr media
Title: Mort (Discworld) (1987)
Author: Terry Pratchett
Genre/Tags: Fantasy, Comedy, Third-Person
Rating: 7/10
Date Began: 1/6/2024
Date Finished: 2/4/2024
Mort, a young man with no clear direction in life, becomes apprenticed to Death himself. While learning the so-called trade, Mort makes a mistake which threatens to rewrite the course of history.
I INVITE YOU INTO MY HOME, he said, I TRAIN YOU, I FEED YOU, I CLOTHE YOU, I GIVE YOU OPPORTUNITIES YOU COULD NOT DREAM OF, AND THUS YOU REPAY ME. YOU SEDUCE MY DAUGHTER FROM ME, YOU NEGLECT THE DUTY, YOU MAKE RIPPLES IN REALITY THAT WILL TAKE A CENTURY TO HEAL. YOUR ILL-TIMED ACTIONS HAVE DOOMED YOUR COMRADES TO OBLIVION. THE GODS WILL DEMAND NOTHING LESS. ALL IN ALL, BOY, NOT A GOOD START TO YOUR FIRST JOB.
For live reading notes, check the reblogs (contains unmarked spoilers).
Content warnings and review (spoiler-free and spoiler versions) under the cut.
Content Warnings: Mentioned -- Suicide, animal abuse. Depicted -- Death (i mean. yeah), animal death, sexual humor, suicidal ideation, fatphobia (kinda).
**SPOILER-FREE REVIEW**
Before I dive into the review, I want to acknowledge that despite several criticisms, I did enjoy reading Mort. It certainly has issues that keep me from rating it higher, but I still recommend it as a fun read despite these flaws.
A major reason for this is the prose. It's difficult to express just how clever Pratchett was as a writer. He has a unique way of presenting scenes and situations which consistently feels fresh and original. Whether it's clever wordplay or a unique spin on tired cliches, he's always catching me off guard in the best way. Saying someone's voice "could have kept milk fresh for a month" instead of "was icy" is one among hundreds of delightful examples. And while there's plenty of witticisms, they feel genuine rather than cynically scripted to appeal to as many people as possible.
Pratchett also doesn't shy away from serious topics despite the general comedic tone, and this contrast makes the grounded parts of the writing all the more poignant. His fantastic style is so omnipresent in his work that to explore it in detail would devour the rest of the review. Even when taking notes while reading I'd have to be selective on WHICH great phrases I wrote down lest I only spend time on them to the exclusion of all else.
One specific thing I like about Pratchett's writing is how specific jokes recur throughout the story but often in ways one doesn't expect. There's a running bit in Mort where characters will call him "boy" or "lad" and he tiredly corrects them with "Mort". As a reader I fully expected him to eventually get fed up and chew someone out for failing to use his name. And… he does! But later the joke is subverted again in a (spoilerific) way I DIDN’T expect, which caught me completely off guard. Setups and payoffs like that are delightful.
**SPOILER REVIEW**
My biggest struggle with Mort is that I found it difficult to care about the plot until the end. There are two things working against Mort's story that made me feel this way.
The first is the main conflict's inciting incident: Mort commits a selfish act and saves the life of a princess who was supposed to die. In doing so, Mort warps reality and the fabric of history itself. The problem is, the only reason he saves Princess Keli is because of a superficial crush on her just from seeing her for a few seconds. The two barely interact before he saves her, and when they do later, there's not any chemistry to make this decision interesting. And yes, I'm aware that this was probably intentional: Mort did something foolish and impulsive and has to deal with the consequences. The problem is that since the rest of the plot hinges on his choice to intervene, and the context around that choice is so lackluster, it brings the entire plot down. I found myself wondering why Mort bothers to keep up the ruse and lie directly to Death when his reason for doing so is so vague and uninteresting. The personal stakes just felt nonexistent to me.
The second issue is how the story is structured. Rather than closely following a standard plot progression, Mort is more like a series of vignettes and scenes loosely tied together. There's nothing wrong with that in and of itself; I'd argue Guards! Guards! follows a similar style, and I'm willing to bet much of Pratchett's work does. The problem is when this lack of focus combines with a weak core conflict. Reality being split and history diverging should be compelling, yet I wondered why I should care at all. The main thing that kept me reading was the clever writing and setups in these scenes. So I found the book fun to read but the story mediocre.
To Mort's credit, the stakes get more personal and involved toward the end. I finally found the story and characters compelling when Mort started to become more like Death. It's jarring when his dialogue intermittently switches to Death's unique typeface. This is probably the only time I've had a font choice genuinely catch me off guard-- unexpected Death dialogue is surprising in other Discworld books, but here it serves a different function because it's NOT actually Death speaking. The true love interest Ysabell also gets a lot of characterization toward the end, which is a shame because she's a great character who should have had plot involvement sooner.
Speaking of characters near the end, it seems like Pratchett suddenly realized the book needed a villain in the third act, so randomly assigned the role to side character Albert. So he's evil for a few dozen pages after showing no indication of this before, then the whole incident with him is resolved by Death with zero problems. It's super weird-- in fact, you could probably cut Albert out of the story entirely and nothing would change. Perhaps I'm missing something but I really didn't see the point of this. There is some context suggesting he is an historical figure referenced in other Discworld novels, so maybe it's more interesting if you've read those. However, having only read Guards! Guards!, this obviously fell flat for me. While inter-book references are fun (I was delighted to see The Librarian, for example), I don't think key components of the plot should rely on them, assuming that is the case here.
On the positive side, there are some small details I loved. One is how Pratchett uses the phrase "There is no justice. There is just me," to refer to Death. Because the moment I read it I wondered when we would hear "there is just us" instead, since the pun speaks for itself. So when we DID get that line during an emotional moment of the story I was cheering and hollering and punching the air and shit. It's one of those predictable things that is nevertheless extremely satisfying as a reader.
Another great detail is that every person has a literal book that describes their life until they die, which is constantly being written. While this is true metaphorically, it's a literal thing in Death's domain. Mort the novel closes with Mort the character seeing his own book and reading from it, and this becomes the narration for the last page or so. It's a clever payoff to a mechanic introduced in the novel.
A last thing to note is that there are still some loose ends. This isn't necessarily a criticism since there is a chance they are addressed in future books, but I'm mentioning them for my own benefit. In one early scene, Mort bungles his job so badly that a witch named Goodie Hamstring successfully manipulates him and escapes dying entirely. Considering the emphasis on this scene and the ominous tone, it isn't addressed at all by the end of the book, so it is possible this character shows up elsewhere.
Something not fully explored is the theme of reality. When Mort rescues Princess Keli, he creates a paradox where multiple realities exist, and one has to dominate over the other, which serves as part of the main conflict. Death's realm is not real despite being a major location in the story-- something that's true in a meta sense (Mort being a work of fiction) but also in the context of the story. Then there's implications throughout the book that Mort becomes "more real" the more he behaves like Death. While Death is the final reality of life, obviously, this is presented more in a mechanical way than a philosophical one. At the end of the story Death gives Mort a pearl of reality that Mort created due to the events of the novel, stating that it can be the beginning of a new universe whenever Discworld finally dies. This is… quite the detail to drop at the end. I feel like reality is explored as an in-universe mechanic rather than a metaphorical theme in the story, which is why it doesn't feel conclusive by the end. It makes me wonder, again, if this is going to come up in a later Discworld novel.
**CONCLUSION**
Overall while I had some issues with Mort as a story, as a reading experience I really enjoyed it. I might delve into more of the City Watch storyline next, since I had a great time with Guards! Guards! and want more of those characters.

The online Demri book is so good!! I've known about Demri for nearly 10 years now but there's stuff in there I hadn't read before, you did a great job. I would be so curious to know more about her flaws, as weird as that sounds. I think she's always come across as a perfect human which makes it feel she was almost supernatural. I have trouble articulating it fully in a short message, because I also know that loved ones would rather not speak poorly of her and want to focus on the good, and that should be respected. But I don't know, I think it would be nice to know about her more 'fully'. It seems alluded to in the book and it made me wonder. Flaws make people more relatable, she's always seemed unattainably perfect to me, even with the darkness and addiction. Anyway, great book, and I hope I explained this with the nuance and tact that I intended!
Hi anon, thank you for your question, it is very interesting indeed. We will first let her family and friends talk about the subject.
One aspect of Demri’s personality, according to Austin [Demri’s mom], was her inability to handle guilt. In Austin’s words, “If she offended you, and you didn’t have a cell phone or anything, she would start calling your house, waiting for you to get home to apologize.”
Kathleen Austin: Her concern for others was far beyond her concern for herself.
Barbara Dearaujo: She was constantly on the run. Not sure it was running scared but running for sure. Maybe she was afraid of missing out or just looking for the next thing to stimulate her. I have no clue what it was but I definitely could not keep up with her and whenever I tried or whoever tried we all would end up just as sick, lost and confused and most of us would tap out. She never tapped it seemed, no matter how horrible the circumstances got she could deal with it. Crazy. I wouldn’t call her suicidal but definitely self-destructive. Poor girl. Such a sad story. Demri always and forever a wild wood pixie.
Fabiola Gonzalez: The beautiful soul of Demri is she never had an ounce of hate in her heart. She loved everyone. She was so unconditional even when she was judged and even faulted on her own self-love. She was a good person. Better to others than she was to herself.
Krista Kay: She also had some rough times and went down a heartbreaking road. She was beautiful and complicated, and unforgettable, and human.
Krista Kay: Want to honor their [Demri's and Layne's] memory? Pursue your dreams and talents, lift up others, and take care of your body and mind.
Keli Lake: Demri is special to me because she inspired my self-confidence. It’s complicated since she lacked it herself. It’s like she gave it all away until she was depleted.
Rob Meiser: She was a good person with a big heart but she was fighting demons like most of us.
Jacque Nakken: She always wanted to make others happy, more than herself.
Elsa Schmolke: It’s all very sad but Demri was certainly loved but just so out of control nobody could help her.
Scott Spivey: Always kindness even when she struggled so hard with her demons.
Mara Wheelan: My dear soul sister, she extracted the truly beautiful parts of my soul and made me unafraid. She brought light into the depths of darkness from within. She loved all my ugliness and glorified my uniqueness.
Chay Wilkerson Moore: Demri was like a beautiful flower stuck in a tornado. She was very sweet, most of the time. Always yelled my name and hugged me, made me feel special, like she did most people. Very strong spirit, very bent on destruction, I don’t know why... [She was] The most powerful pretty little thing, with this profound sense of vulnerability that she seemed surrounded by. A princess in distress. I immediately felt the need to protect her in a brotherly way.
For what we've learnt about Demri trough all these years, and reading what her closest people said about the subject, is that she had a poor mental health. She had an addiction in the first place, an addiction usually is the consequence of a poor mental health. She may also was not very self-confident or self-conscious, she always wished the best for all the others but didn't apply to herself. Like Robbie Williams, sometimes the people that look the happiest, have the worst demons, and with no professional help, it is very difficult to fight them.
Maybe she went to drug therapy and I guess that included mental health therapy. But back in the day that was taboo. Still today it looks you are crazy or insane if you admit you go (or have been) to therapy (and I have been and still go!), so imagine back then. Plus if she didn't have the money nor the support, probably for her it was easier to escape her demons by actually taking the thing that caused them - the drugs.
I always find her story so tragic. So young. With so many people around that cared about her, and still she succumbed to drugs. I suppose is what Jerry Cantrell said about Layne. All the band members and his mum tried to help him, but they had their own struggles as well, and if ultimately he didn't want to be helped... there's not much you can do. I wish she could have let herself help.
The book is here for everyone to read it. Please, take care of yourself, look for help and support if you need it. Mental and emotional health are as important as physical health.
