Mingi - as Iris - is the deity of the rainbow, communication and new endeavours. He is also the messenger of the gods. Like the rainbow's arc, he is the link between the heavens and earth, the helper who allows for prayers and wishes to reach other deities. Lucky are the ones who catch sight of his beautiful wings that can brighten even the darkest of places, for they can be sure they are heard and understood.

A Deep Dive Into Disney’s Most Underperforming Princess

Princess Aurora can’t even be described as controversial. To most, she’s simply boring, too passive, and a continuation of the bland cycle of white princesses who wait around for magic or a prince to save them. Although no one hates her, they find her irritating at the worst, uninteresting at best. In the fifties, they must have thought the same thing. Sleeping Beauty was a commercial failure, and led to company wide annual loss. Sleeping Beauty had followed several other financial flops, such as Bambi and Alice in Wonderland, the latter costing Disney around half a million dollars. Due to her lack of popularity, Aurora may be one of the most neglected Princesses. Many cling to her out of nostalgia, or because she has a nice design, and they find it hard to defend their love for the movie. But the movie’s turbulent history and the amount of detail that went into Aurora herself is what really makes her so incredibly fascinating.

Starting with her design, Disney hired Marc Davis as the supervising animator for Aurora. He also animated Maleficent. The intention was for them to be realistic enough to be placed against the heavily detailed backgrounds of the movie. Davis had embraced this artistic direction, while many of the animators found it, and especially Aurora, laborious and tiring to work on. Both Maleficent and Aurora had to be refined and dynamic. Davis was Disney’s go-to animator for ‘pretty girls’, examples being Tinkerbell and Alice. His knowledge of anatomy and the human body brought both Aurora and Cinderella to life, two of Disney’s most visually iconic characters. Davis had also incorporated Art Nouveau and Art Deco into Aurora’s design, while the tapestry-like art style of the movie was chosen by Eyvind Earle, who was inspired by pre-Renaissance European art. The score and songs were based on Tchaikovsky’s ballet.

Aurora alone required more effort and attention to detail than any princess before her. It took Walt Disney and his team three years to choose a voice actress. They nearly scrapped the project until they discovered Mary Costa, but Disney himself avoided interacting with her in person early on in the project, fearing that she’d influence his vision of the movie.

Aurora was loosely based on her voice actress. Her appearance and her habits (such as gesturing when speaking and singing) were both incorporated into Aurora’s animation. She was also drawn to resemble both her live action model, the same one as Cinderella’s, Helene Stanley, and actress Audrey Hepburn. Davis took inspiration from Audrey Hepburn’s slender physique and elegant demeanour.

In the book Multiculturalism and the Mouse: Race and Sex in Disney Entertainment, author Douglas Brode referred to Aurora as “a model of modern (50’s) female glamour” and compared her to Brigitte Bardot. He also compared her gown to the work of Christian Dior.

As a character, she was described by Nerve as being “the apex of women who made no choices for themselves.” Aurora is a member of the “Golden Era” of Disney heroines, the original Princess trifecta. Her dreams are the same as those before her. But it’s possible that Aurora’s dreams of true love derived from the need for companionship outside of her three fairy godmothers.

On their website, Disney describes her as, “graceful and kind. She knows that a wonderful future awaits, if you just have the courage to dream it. Aurora enjoys using her imagination and sharing stories with her forest friends. She is also loyal in her relationships -- to her animal friends, her fairies, and her kingdom. Aurora believes in a wish and remains hopeful that she will find the adventure she is looking for.”

Walt Disney himself described Aurora as being “a very layered character/different. She’s calm, yet playful. She has a sense of humour, and she has an imagination.” We can not argue that she was considered layered through the lens of the fifties, because many critics disliked all three of the original princesses for their passive personality, or lack thereof. But from the perspective of the team working on the show, they saw much more to her.

This was the film that Walt Disney worked his hardest on, it took ten years to complete. It was also the very last Princess film he was involved in. Her ‘layers’ were very much intentional. Disney tried to do the same thing with Cinderella.

With Cinderella, they attempted to make her less passive than Snow White, and they showed this through her rebelling against her abusive stepfamily. Maurice Rapf said, "My thinking was you can't have somebody who comes in and changes everything for you. It can't be delivered for you on a platter. You've got to earn it. So in my version, the Fairy Godmother said, 'It's okay till midnight but from then on it's up to you.' I made her earn it, and what she had to do to achieve it was to rebel against her stepmother and stepsisters, to stop being a slave in her own home. So I had a scene where they're ordering her around and she throws the stuff back at them. She revolts, so they lock her up in the attic. I don't think anyone took (my idea) very seriously."

The toned down version of Cinderella, although rebellious in her own way, is still toned down. That part of her character was written out. In comparison to what she would have been, she is passive. Aurora and Cinderella are both less passive than their predecessors, but passive nonetheless. All three of them are the staple damsels in distress.

However, Mary Costa described Aurora as “very strong”, citing her urge to defy her guardians as a display of independence and an example of her strength. Aurora was raised by three women, and had never met a man in her life. Costa believed that because of this, she was ‘innately romantic’ as opposed to lonely or depressed with her sheltered life. To quote, “there was a certain part of her that maybe she didn’t realise, that was just so romantic and maybe expecting something that–she didn’t even know what.”

She believed that her being raised by three older women rather than her parents made her “a little bit older, and yet, she…had this young, outreaching spirit.” Author Douglas Brode points out that the fairies’ independent raising of Aurora mirrors “precisely that sort of women’s commune numerous feminists experimented with throughout the seventies.” Aurora living in an isolated, female-only space, with female authority, is reminiscent of the bold and liberating radical feminist movement. In her own way, as a peasant, she was independent. And that independence and autonomy was taken from her upon discovering that she was royalty and betrothed to a prince. She was leaving her home and the presumed man of her dreams behind, and not of her own free will.

Aurora had enjoyed her simple life, it had fulfilled her, even if she desired more. She had dreams of finding romantic love, which she talks about in the movie’s song ‘I Wonder’. Additionally, her close relationship with animals demonstrates her loving and kind personality. She has a whimsical imagination, and it’s scenes like the ones from Disney’s Enchanted Tales series and ‘Once Upon a Dream’, that would support Costa’s claim of her being a romantic. Where she’s changing in and out of pretty gowns with a magical wand, and giggling to herself. Or dancing happily with the forest animals, thinking about her imaginary prince. In ‘Keys to the Kingdom’, she proudly sings about wishing to make decisions with her heart.

Her independence is demonstrated on multiple occasions in Disney’s discontinued Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams. Aurora graciously accepts responsibility of her kingdom while both her and Philip’s parents travel away for a business trip. All on her own, she is determined to get all of her Princess duties finished on time, the hard way. She refuses to take the easy way out, time and time again, even when she doubts herself. She works harder than even her father, who would take the easy way out by signing royal documents without reading them. Even when Meriwether gives her a magic wand to help her out, she reads and fills out every royal form diligently, and helps out all of her subjects. She manages to complete her tasks on time and throw a banquet for her family and Philip by the time they return. The lesson here is to ‘stick to it’ and to ‘persevere’. But her insistence on doing everything on her own is shown once again in A Kingdom of Kindness, where she must plan a surprise party for Philip. The three fairies attempt to help her, but she continues to tell them that she wants to do it on her own. This series was cancelled, and it is difficult to find any clips of it online. But this short-series gives us some insight into Aurora’s character.

She is assumed to be the protagonist by most, but many consider the three fairies to be the protagonists. They help move the story along, they protect Aurora, and they have distinct, in-your-face personalities. Many consider Aurora authentic, or the title character, but whether she is the protagonist or not has never been agreed upon. Her lack of role in the story has been criticized by many. But some take it as an allegory for the lack of control

The most lengthy debate surrounding Aurora has to do with how feminist her character is. She may have been an improvement from the previous princesses, but she is not regarded as a particularly feminist character.

The three original princesses, all being pale-skinned European princesses with a naive and endlessly forgiving (an unrealistic standard), sends a message to their viewers that this is what princesses should look like, how they should behave. All three classic princesses are deeply intertwined with Disney’s long history of racism and bigotry. In an attempt to amend this, Disney has released back to back live action remakes of their movies, all receiving mixed reviews. Maleficent was Sleeping Beauty’s remake, focused on a maternal relationship between Maleficent and Aurora. Many people interpreted the scene where Maleficent’s wings get cut off in her sleep as sexual assault. This inclusion made many survivors of sexual assault feel represented by the character.

From my perspective, the original Sleeping Beauty is technically a movie centred around women. A teenage girl lives with her three surrogate mothers, who end up saving her in the end from the female antagonist. Although Prince Philip’s role in the story is still a large part of what moves the plot along. It is Philip who is captured, as Maleficent knew that he would go looking for her. He courted Aurora, defeated Maleficent with the help of the three fairies, and kissed the princess awake. But he still doesn’t get as large of a role, or nearly as much screen time, as the three fairies.

In short, both the movie and the princess fascinate me. And although there is depth if you squint, a character does not need to be fleshed out to be lovable, or at least endearing. Aurora is my favourite Disney Princess, and I find the history behind her and the film to be more interesting than what meets the eye.

The Gryffindor girls’ dorm was buzzing with excitement, every inch of space covered in notebooks, bits of parchment, and quills. A huge bowl of sweets from Hogsmeade sat in the middle of the floor, quickly diminishing as the girls threw out idea after idea for Halloween.

“We need something iconic,” Marlene said, plopping down on her bed with her legs crossed, fingers drumming on her knee. “Something that’ll turn heads and make everyone wish they’d thought of it first.”

Mary grinned, popping a chocolate frog into her mouth. “Yeah, but it’s got to be a group costume, too. Last year, half the school went as duos, and it was chaos trying to figure out who was who. Imagine if we rolled in as a full set. People would lose their minds!”

Dorcas leaned back, eyes gleaming. “What about fairies? Like…the Winx Club?”

“Too niche,” Lily replied with a slight smirk. “Maybe we’re aiming too young. What about something bold, like superheroes?”

The room exploded with ideas, each one stranger than the last. You leaned in, head on your hand, as they debated.

“What if we did Mario Kart characters?” you suggested, leaning in and wiggling your eyebrows.

Marlene snorted, reaching for another candy. “What, are we all supposed to carry around fake steering wheels all night?”

Dorcas snapped her fingers, eyes bright. “Ooh, ooh! Minions! We could be, like, a whole army of yellow.”

Mary burst into laughter. “The only ‘minion’ we’d look like is a nightmare with the amount of yellow we’d have to wear.”

At this point, they were sprawled out across the floor and each other's beds, snickering at the ridiculousness of it all.

“What if we tried Disney princesses?” Alice suggested finally, shrugging as she threw it into the mix.

Marlene and Lily’s eyes lit up immediately.

“Oh my god, that’s perfect,” Marlene exclaimed. “And we can put our own spin on it, make it look classy but still hot.”

Lily clapped her hands, her eyes gleaming with excitement. “We can each pick one and go all out. It’ll be like our own royal court, but dangerous and…beautiful!”

Everyone buzzed with excitement as you all quickly claimed your princesses, with Marlene insisting she had to be Aurora and Mary immediately taking Snow White. Dorcas was going as Tiana, and Lily being Megara. Alice obviously going as Alice from Alice in Wonderland and you end up choosing to be Belle.

By the time you’d dug through your trunks, swapped clothes, and haphazardly stitched what you could, everyone had their costumes mostly ready. Just a few last touches were needed, but it was time for dinner, and with a collective sigh, the girls abandoned their fabric chaos to make their way down to the Great Hall.

As they entered, the Marauders were already at their usual table. Predictably, James shot up when he spotted Lily, putting on his best charming smile. "Evans," he greeted, clearly fishing for a reaction.

"Potter," she replied, unimpressed but with a glint in her eye that made Y/N smirk. Lily would never admit it, but the way she looked at James sometimes—like he’d just hung the stars for her—was hard to miss.

As they sat down, Y/N leaned in and whispered, "Why do you keep shutting him down? You know he really likes you."

Lily rolled her eyes but bit back a small smile. "He's just... a lot to deal with. And he's dramatic."

Still, Y/N could see the way Lily’s gaze trailed back to him as she spoke. Y/N had a plan forming, one that just might break down Lily’s walls once and for all.

Dinner didn’t take long. You could feel everyone’s eagerness to get back to the costumes; the group energy was practically bubbling as you finished dessert and prepared to head out. You were about to follow the girls out when a sudden idea hit you like lightning. Heart racing, you quickly told them, “I left something on the table, go ahead—I’ll catch up!”

You darted back into the Great Hall, skidding to a stop at the Gryffindor table. James blinked, surprised to see you there. “Y/N? Did you need something?”

“Yes,” you said, catching your breath, a smirk forming on your face. “So, here’s the thing: the girls and I are doing a group costume for Halloween—Disney princesses. Lily’s going to be Megara. You should be her Hercules.”

Peter raised his hand. “Wait, but we were going to be Ghostbusters!”

“Shut it, Wormtail,” James interrupted, eyes glinting with excitement. “Y/N, you are absolutely brilliant! You’re the best wing woman ever, thankyouthankyouthankyou.”

You grinned, knowing this might be the perfect plan to bring them closer. “She’ll be surprised, so don’t let on that I told you.”

After quick goodbyes, you dashed out to rejoin the girls. As you made your way up to the common room, you could practically picture the Halloween party—James dressed as Hercules, swooping in with some over-the-top line. It was going to be perfect.

When you arrived back at the dorm, the girls were waist-deep in costumes, trying to make the last adjustments. Dorcas waved a green sash at you, and Marlene threw a handful of glitter into the air, declaring, “Princesses of Gryffindor, we are ready for Halloween!”

And as you looked around at the chaos and excitement, you couldn’t help but smile, satisfied with your master plan. Halloween was going to be unforgettable, and with any luck, it might just be the night Lily finally sees James the way he’s always seen her.

The night of the Halloween party had arrived, Marlene’s playlist blasted through the dorm, a mix of upbeat tunes that kept them all hyped as they perfected their costumes. They took turns braiding hair, applying lipstick, and laughing about how they'd pulled this whole Disney princess thing together with their limited wardrobe and a lot of creative swapping.

As they descended the stairs to the common room, they were met with the sound of laughter and music echoing through the halls. The room was buzzing with students dressed in an eclectic mix of costumes, and Y/N could feel her excitement growing.

“Holy Merlin,” Lily muttered beside her, freezing in place.

Y/N followed her line of sight and almost laughed. There, in all his muscled glory, stood James Potter in a Hercules costume that made the costume look straight out of a Greek myth. He looked incredible—his broad shoulders and arms on full display, his hair charmingly tousled beneath a golden headpiece.

Lily was staring. Hard.

Trying not to grin too wide, Y/N nudged her. “Please don’t be mad, but… I kind of told James to go as Hercules. It seemed fitting, don’t you think?”

Lily shot her a half-hearted glare, but a reluctant smile broke through. “I want to be mad… but it’s actually kind of sweet he’d do that.” She paused, her cheeks going pink as she muttered, “Plus, he looks… really good.”

They burst into laughter, which caught James’s attention from across the room. Spotting Lily, he straightened up, his usual bravado suddenly replaced with nervous excitement. He came over, cheeks tinged with a blush.

“Lily,” he started, voice soft and sincere, “you look beautiful.” He held out his hand, barely hiding his nerves. “Would you like to dance?”

Lily’s surprise was evident, but she didn’t hesitate for long. She nodded, slipping her hand into his, and Y/N saw the look of pure disbelief on James’s face. Before they stepped onto the dance floor, he shot Y/N a look of pure gratitude, mouthing thank you. She winked back, feeling like a matchmaker extraordinaire.

With the night in full swing, Y/N wandered through the crowd, catching up with friends. Eventually, she bumped into Remus, who gave her a warm hug.

“Hey! So, what did you all decide to go as for Halloween, since James bailed?” she asked, grinning.

Remus smirked and gently turned her by the shoulders. There, in the corner, was Sirius Black in a Gaston costume, flexing and striking ridiculous poses to impress the girls around him.

“Sirius,” Remus explained, holding back a laugh, “doesn’t know much about Beauty and the Beast. He thinks Gaston is the hero who wins the princess.”

Y/N’s face twisted in horror and amusement as she tried to stifle a laugh. “You didn’t tell him?”

“Oh, no,” Remus chuckled. “I’m letting him figure that out himself.”

Her laughter bubbled over, and she shook her head. “Remus, you’re evil.”

You quickly look Remus up and down trying to figure out what he’s supposed to be, but it doesnt look like he has a costume on and you look at him confused.

He gave a soft shrug, his smile a bit sly. “I’m actually the Beast, for… obvious reasons.”

She blinked, processing his dark sense of humor, and let out a giggle. “You know, I really shouldn’t be laughing at that.”

He chuckled, nudging her lightly. “But it’s true.”

Her laughter was interrupted by a question. “Where’s Peter, though?” she asked, scanning the room.

Remus nodded toward the far corner, where Peter stood dejectedly in his Ghostbusters costume, arms crossed. “He’s still trying to make the rest of us feel guilty for ditching the group costume.”

Y/N couldn’t hold back a laugh. “He’ll get over it,” she said, grinning. They shared a knowing look before the crowd swept her away.

As she caught glimpses of James and Lily laughing together on the dance floor, Sirius flexing dramatically, and Peter moping in his Ghostbuster getup, Y/N felt a sense of warmth and satisfaction. This was the kind of Halloween she’d dreamed of—a night full of laughter, a bit of chaos, and just the right amount of magic.

A watch through of Princess and the Frog:

Anyone else think it is hella suspicious that someone wanted that sugar mill only after she wanted to buy it?

- After the movie was done, it was explained to me by friends that this is a common scam to squeeze more money, especially targeted against POC potential buyers. No one else was bidding, they just wanted more money. My child brain just didn’t fit that together the first couple watch throughs- I mean, they clearly still had it for sale a long time later in order to be threatened at the end of the film… assholes.

Gathering a group of travelers by appealing to thier dreams is a very American story, Ala Wizard of Oz- the idea of the individual goals. This is Naveen, Tiana, and Louis. But then comes Ray, who is just trying to be helpful. That feels more old world, and he leads them to the old world magic- the woman of power in the wilderness. :)

Lawrence was frightened by the idea of a controlling wife, while Naveen was impressed with a well thrown book, and Tiana had dreams that included showing all the boys how it’s done. And her friend is very commandeering, and the object of all the men. There’s a theme of strong women and respect for them here- which makes sense. 1920s fairytales are just out of the Victorian era and the invention of the fairy godmother. And here comes Mama Odie. She even has the mother title.

Naveen and Tiana are so perfect for eachother. Beyond him being ok with her ambition and hustle, she needs his people skills for her resteraunt- you need a front man 😁

First time I can think of in a Disney film that an outside perspective for love song had thier own love to sing about 💘

Every good char in this movie is immediately willing to help someone out, even when- especially when- it inconveniences them. That is how you let your characters be very strong characters, even occasionally overwhelming other characters, and still be good people and likeable. This is how we bond with Lotti, and then Naveen, despite them having domineering personalities.

The way Naveen admires things about Tiana even before he likes her- then when he loves her, the way his face lights up as he watches her.

Anyone else think froggy Naveen is based a little on John Bob from Swan Princess? Those leg spots look familiar is all I am saying.

Most important line- “He didn’t get what he wanted, but he had what he needed” was given to her by her mother, who also introduced her to the upper class of town. He mother was so important to this story.

The marrying of Lotty is very “old chivalry” anything for my lady, while the tale itself is very peasant tale of pulling together to get through. As many American tales do, you gotta get ALL the tropes in there. 🪄

Ray is such a well designed character. He is wise, and has common sense, and allies and skills, and LIGHT to oppose the shadows- and they balance it by making him small and fragile. Is… is he the wizard of the party? Not nessisarily in the DND way that is very academically type, but in the LOTR classic fantasy way, that makes one member of the group to be the big support to everyone else, but can also be fridged when needed. 😅🥲 Brings wisdom and all else you need but destined to go out ina blaze of glory???

Happy that his parents seemed to be- “finally someone took him in hand” and could care less about her social position.

First time this white girl heard Neo was sitting through the credits of this film in the theaters. Still love his music. 🎶

Rambling

The other day I was looking for inspiration for something to draw and I see a prompt list for an event (Au-gust if someone ask). I will not do it, but some of the prompt give me ideas. Because my mind did not follow one single idea and branched very quickly in every direction it goes like that :

oh there is a prompt for princes & princesses and another one for Victorian era.

It remind me all of theses otome isekai I read this last year.

Should I do some otome isekai/ star wars cross over?

But which period?

So I began to organise my ideas.

For the people who did not know what an otome isekai is :

This is a sub-genre of isekai (transported in another world) where the main character is transported in an other world. Often it's an otome game or a romance novel or light novel. The main character is often a young woman and the world she end in is vaguely European. The architecture and costume are generally a mix of European fashion going from maybe 16th century to early 20th. This young woman will reincarnate most of the time as a noble young woman or child and her purpose will be to save the world and or save herself from a funnest destiny (death). These stories are almost always romance with different males characters fighting for the girl attention.

So … how does an star wars AU will work? The easiest way will be : take a star wars character and put it in an existing otome isekai. It's boring. And if I put Obi-wan or one of the Clone trooper in an otome isekai … it will probably end like an existing almost otome isekai : lout of the count family.

I could imagine an in universe otome isekai and transport one of the character in it. It's too much work. And I'm pretty sure there is already some fan-fiction with a similar premise.

I could take the different traditional characters archetype and force a star wars character in each slot as an exercise of the mind. I chose to do that. I think it will be fun. And it was.

The different roles are the following :

The main characters : often reincarnated as a villainess of the original fiction. It did not mater witch title her father, have she will be the «princess», half of the time the character is adopted. (And her family will drop a “she's adopted” faster than Thor when ask about Loki in Avenger)

The older brother : there is 3 cases : overprotective, incestuous or abusive (sometime it's a combination of the 3. It's about you “death is the only ending for the villainess”.)

The father : most of the time not a good one. Even if he love his daughter, he will pretend he don't. It's the kind of fictional character who will hate his child because her mother died or, if she is adopted as a replacement for the original child who disappear, he will blame her for the disappearance.

The dead mother : because the mother is always dead. If she is not dead the main character will wish she is.

The step mother : Russian roulette for a good and supportive one vs evil abusive one. No middle ground.

The cheeky maid : there is always one maid sidekick. With freckle.

The original female lead : 2 cases : evil «white lotus» (very mean girl) vs main's first fan (people will ask why it's not a girl's love story)

The animal or child pet : the cute item who will follow the «princess». Could be magical. Will be far smarter than any other characters.

The duke of the north : a brooding, cold and handsome young man, with a tragic back story. One of the love interest, most likely to be main's lover at the end of the story if it is not an reverse harem. Black hairs and blue or red eyes are very recurrent.

The crown prince : a rich, suave, charming and handsome young man, often blond. Somehow he need to win the crown. (In these stories they follow east Asian court rules. With concubine for the king/emperor and their children fighting for the crown.) One of the love interest.

The queen (dowager or not, sometime not even the queen in title) : the woman who really rule the kingdom. Like the step mother her evilness is define by a Russian roulette game.

The magic tower master : a smart and handsome young man even if he is centuries old. Often one of the love interest. Green or white hairs are common.

The pope or head of the local church : could be a love interest. If not he will probably be the queen henchman and scheme with her.

The faithful knight : An handsome and kind young man but because his social position is lower than the other ones is love is very unrequited. Most of the time he will be the only decent man.

Now we have the roles we need the periods. I will define them following the movies and TV show. (BBY : before battle of Yavin, ABY: After battle of Yavin) :

When Emma Falls in Love

SUMMARY: When Emma falls in love, it's all on her face. Hangs in the air like stars in outer space. Emma Nolan falls in love three times in her life. After experiencing heartbreak Emma is more wary of love, but when she moves across the hall to Killian Jones, an asshole she knew in college, things start to change and Emma begins to falls in love in a very different way than she did before.

In honour of me getting Eras tour tickets for August 2024 I thought I would post this because if like me you’re obsessed with Captain Swan and Taylor Swift then this song has been on your mind since last week

Emma Nolan was 16 when she first fell in love. When she was young, her parents would read her a fairytale to get her to go to sleep, and when she started reading herself, it was always stories about princesses and dragons. So I guess you could say she was a hopeless romantic. Neal Gold was in her High School English class, and they would share notes and he would smile at her and Emma felt butterflies in her chest whenever he did. She would dream about him at night and hope that tomorrow would be the day he finally asked her out,

 When he eventually asked her to Prom after months and months of wishing and waiting, she would tell her mom she was in love. Her mother would smile and listen to her daughter, hoping this boy would treat her right and love her the way she deserved to. She and her mother went dress shopping and Emma was sure it would be perfect, he would kiss her and they would start to date before going off to college together. He brings her a corsage that matches her dress, shakes hands with her father and promises to be home by midnight. 

 Prom night is as magical as Emma hopes it is. They dance, they laugh and she gets her very first kiss that night. Emma can’t help but feel like a Princess. He asks her to be his girlfriend and Emma feels like she is living her fairytale life. This was her prince charming, and she was going to live happily ever after.

 “I can’t do this anymore.” He tells her 6 months later. He’s leaving for college early, and didn’t want to be tied down with a girl back home. So he leaves for the big city, away from their small town and she never sees him again. She can’t help but hope she might see him for the holidays, but that never happened. He was a ghost and that was when Emma experienced heartbreak for the first time. It was then that she grew up and stopped believing in fairytales.

When Emma leaves for college, she kisses her mother and father goodbye and promises to come home for Christmas. College is the next place that Emma falls in love. Graham. She’s invited to her roommates party one night and he’s there and Emma swears she feels her heart flutter. They get talking and realise they have a lot in common, they both come from a small town and want to go to Law School and are majoring in English. Of course that means she sees him in her classes, and she makes a point of sitting next to him as much as she can.

 They’re at another party and Emma isn’t sure if she was feeling brave or it was the liquid courage doing that, but she grabs his face and kisses him. His lips tasted of whisky and her heart did the butterfly thing again. She didn’t want to fall in love again, but  oh  was she falling.

 “There's a guy.” She tells her mother when she calls. Her mother was her best friend, she wanted to tell her everything about college (well maybe not  everything, but a new guy she was falling for was top of her list)

 “What’s his name? Where is he from? Have you kissed him yet?” She asks eagerly, her mother lost her own mother when she was ten, so she made a real effort in the years she was lucky to have with her daughter,

 “His name is Graham, I met him at a party and we have a lot of classes together. Don’t get your hopes up though mom, who knows how it’s going to end.” Since getting her heart broken, she had a new perspective on life. Didn’t want to fall in love if it only ended in heartbreak.

 “Don’t rain too hard on the sun.” Is her mother’s advice. Forever the optimist.

 But she takes her advice still, and pursues a relationship with Graham. And it’s amazing. She was a lot more mature now, they would debate about things and they would ask each other about the future. She knew this love was different to the one she had with Neal. He’s on the soccer team and she gets to watch his games and be his cheerleader. He blows her a kiss when he sees her in the crowd and her heart is wild. She’s invited to all the after parties, and most of his team are nice, she becomes fast friends with Ruby, one of the other players' girlfriends. It’s also where she meets the most arrogant and aggravating man ever. Killian Jones. Captain of the soccer team, a total asshole. Thought everyone should worship the ground he walked on. “He’s a bloody bastard.” Graham tells her, “gets angry and takes it out on us. Gives me especially a hard time considering we're both from the same bloody country.”

Emma has one more year left of college. Boston has been great but she does miss her small town and its quirks. She brings home Graham to meet her family and they love him. Her mother gives him extra potatoes and stuffing at Thanksgiving and tells him he’s welcome at Christmas. He appreciates the offer but has to decline as he has a paper he hasn’t even started yet. Emma knew family was a difficult thing for him as he was raised by foster families, so she understands why he isn’t jumping at the chance to spend time with his girlfriend's family. 

 In between Christmas and New Years Emma decides to go back to campus early and surprise him. Which is when Emma experiences heartbreak for a second time. She walks into their shared apartment expecting to find her boyfriend surrounded by books and coffee as he works on his paper, not in their bed with a naked brunette. 

 “Emma, this isn’t what it looks like.” He tells her as she grabs her stuff, if this is how he treated a three year relationship then she was very wrong about him.

 “Oh please enlighten me on how your dick fell onto Regina,” She trusted him, told him her fears and how she was terrified of getting her heart broken again. She let him into her home, he ate with her family. She had visions of them moving in together for real after college, imagining starting a life with him. Three years of love down the drain. And Emma reminded herself trusting men was a bad idea and falling in love was a trap. 

 She avoids Graham as much as she can when they have an almost identical class schedule. But somehow she fights through it and graduates with honours. But no job prospects unfortunately. So unable to afford rent in the city she grew to love, she moves back home to her parents house. Her dad is sheriff of their small town and she helps out when she can, whether it be filing paperwork or trying desperately to update their ancient computers. 

 The only perk of living in a small town was the dating scene was practically non-existent. Everyone knew everyone, she knew who dated who in high school and who to avoid. Being back here felt like she was in high school, broken hearted after a boy she trusted and loved broke everything in her. Emma didn’t cry much, never in front of other people, she thought it made her look weak. But when she’s alone, she lets it all out, cries herself to sleep because what was the point of love if it only brought torment and heartbreak.

Finding a dream job is hard, just because you graduated college didn’t mean employers were lining up to employ her. She had failed interviews and was questioned why she didn’t take certain lectures or why she didn’t land an internship when she was already up to her limits in work. It was rough as hell. But eventually she finds success. Bail bonds. Not her first choice in careers, but she was desperate to get out of her small town. 

 Her apartment in Boston is a shithole. There is no other way to describe a studio apartment on the outskirts of the city centre. It’s small and dingy and the previous owners must have eaten fish every single night as that scent clung to the wallpaper, forcing her to open the tiny window to breathe fresh air. But it was all she could afford on her crappy salary. Her job also doesn’t consist of much other than coffee runs for the first year. She felt like an overpaid intern. But she works hard, she stays late to research the assholes and what could be used to bring them down, and it helps out. When she’s assigned her first case, she kicks ass. Brings the guy down and she earns respect from her colleagues. She realises she doesn’t hate bail bonds as much as she thought, she originally wanted to study law to help people but realised quickly into her second year she didn’t want to be a lawyer. But this was still helping people and as her paycheck got bigger and bigger each month she was able to move out of her crappy studio apartment and into a one bed apartment in a nicer area of the city.

 She has a neighbour across the hall. She sees the back of his head occasionally but has never had a conversation with him but he doesn’t make much noise or hold late night parties so she’s happy with that. 

 The one night she does meet him, everything changes from that point.

 She’s carrying two paper bags from the grocery store, she had a craving for pasta and realised she had no marinara sauce, and going to the grocery store when you were hungry was always a bad idea. So here she was, two brown bags covering her face whilst struggling to get her key in the door.

 “Here let me help you.” A stranger's voice says, reliving her struggle and taking one of the bags so she can open her door.

 “Thank you.” And that’s when she gets a proper look at the stranger, who she presumes is her neighbour. “Killian Jones?

 “Emma. Emma Nolan” 

 Killian Jones, captain of the soccer team. Total asshole and Graham's friend. Great. This was fucking perfect. 

 “Small world huh.” He comments and Emma wanted to roll her eyes at how small it fucking was. She hadn’t seen him in years, since she ended things with Graham, she stopped going to his games or parties with his friends. Of all the people to end up living next to.

 “How long have you lived here? Do you live with your girlfriend?” She briefly remembers Killian having a girlfriend, dark curly hair.

 He cringes at the mention of a girlfriend, clearly a touchy subject. “No uh, it’s just me. Been here around a year now.”

 They make polite conversation about what they were doing in the city, and he lets her get back to unpacking her groceries, but at the door he turns and says, “I wanted to tell you Graham was a complete dickhead, you were too good for him anyway.”

 She doesn’t know why he says it, but she’s grateful anyway.

 The next few months pass in a blur, she sees Killian in the corridor in the mornings and says hello, she holds the apartment building door open for him when he's coming back from a run. One night though Emma decides to impulsively start baking brownies because she was bored and craving something sweet. So after googling a recipe she gets her ingredients and mixing bowl out, and begins the messy process of combining flour, eggs and chocolate. It’s only when the mix is ready to be put into a dish does Emma realise she has nothing to add the mixture to. And only after rifling through her cupboards does she knock on her neighbours door. Hair up in a messy ponytail, no makeup and possibly flour on her face. Great.

 He opens the door looking almost as dishevelled as she was, grey sweatpants and a loosely fitted white t-shirt, which is where she also notices something she didn’t before. A stump in place of his left hand. She rattles her brain trying to think of when it could’ve happened, he had to have two hands in college-right? “I’m sorry, this is so random but do you happen to have a baking pan I could borrow? I had a craving to make them and I realise now that I don’t have anything to bake them with.” 

 The corners of his mouth turn upright as he smiles at her, and that goodman smile made Emma's stomach flutter again, she didn’t deny she found him attractive but she wouldn’t go there. “Say I do have one, do I get to try the brownies once they’re done?” 

 “Well that depends on how good your brownie dish is. Every good baker knows it's the tools that make them delicious.” There was no harm in flirting a little, he was her type too-dark hair, light eyes and an accent that made her weak at the knees.

 This makes him laugh as he goes into his apartment which is an identical layout to Emmas, to grab his brownie dish. “I expect great things from this.” 

 She walks back into her apartment with a giddy smile on her face. This man across the hall from her was different to the boy she thought she knew in college. So maybe she adds extra chocolate to the brownies to make them extra fudgy and then tops them with extra chocolate chips and brings them over to his apartment and waits eagerly for him to open the door. 

 “These are easily the best brownies I have tasted in my life.” Emma doesn’t know if he means it or if he's just saying it to be nice, but either way she can’t help the smile on her face growing as he takes a bite.

 Emma sits in his apartment for hours that night. They chat about college and how it felt like a lifetime ago yet also not that long ago. They speak about their lives now and she learns Killian is a high school teacher, a History teacher specifically, she learns he has a passion for mythology, and Cleopatra is his favourite story. And she tells him about how she fell into bail bonds but actually enjoys it. She learns that he moved from London when he was 17 and misses very few things about his home, “except for tea, you bloody Americans put shame on the drink.” 

 “You can ask about it, I won’t get offended.” He says, referencing his hand which she now sees is a prosthetic.

 “When did it happen? Am I a bad person for not realising in college?” She asks, hoping he won’t be pissed off.

 He just shakes his head, “don’t worry, it happened just a few months before graduation. It was a terrible storm and me and my ex-girlfriend had just had a huge fight and I wasn’t in the right headspace so I was driving alone and out of nowhere a truck hit me and my car spun and spun. I’m lucky to be alive considering I was in hospital for 3 months, the doctors tried to save my hand but it got stuck in the steering wheel and it could’ve led to a bad infection so now I have to wear a prosthetic.” He says unclipping his hand and re-clipping it in. He then goes on to explain that he ended up graduating later than planned as he missed a semester due to hospital and rehabilitation. 

 When Emma is back in her apartment that night, she feels like something has changed. There was something about her that made her want to keep getting to know him and tell him everything about her. Whenever they see one another in the hall now, they chat about their plans for the day and he lets her vent when she’s had a stressful day or no luck catching a perp. She makes sure to buy more baking pans so she can keep bringing him baked goods when he’s working late grading homework. She isn’t sure what they are exactly, there has been flirting but nothing more, she knows he doesn't have a girlfriend and he knows she hasn’t dated anyone since Graham. 

 So she decides to be bold, to take charge. She knocks on his apartment door and almost as soon as he opens his door, she pounces and kisses him. She thinks she’s made a huge mistake but then she feels his hand push the back of her head forward as he engages in the kiss and deepens it. His lips taste of rum and salt, and the kiss feels  right  , and it was so different to how she felt when she kissed Graham or even Neal. Things escalate pretty quickly, and one moment she’s up against the wall on the inside of his apartment with her legs around his waist as he places kisses down the side of her neck causing a moan to escape her lips. Clothes are being torn off and scattered across the apartment as they make their way to his bedroom.  Every touch was hungry, wanting to taste more of one another, scratchings of pleasure and wanting to make sure this was actually happening. The sex was something else, it was energetic and the way he made her feel felt like fireworks were going off in her head. His touches were soft when they needed to be, and rough and fast when she asked. Their bodies were like two puzzle pieces that had finally fit together.

 That night was a catalyst for everything good that happened. The very next night he takes her out to dinner, a small Italian restaurant which did the best pasta. They walk hand in hand and they’re both happy. They talk about life, they tell each other things they wouldn’t tell anyone else. Emma tells him her fears of being left alone and how she used to dream of a fairytale but grew out of it when she got older, to which Killian tells her his mother used to read him fairytales as a bedtime story and they always remind him of her.

 “Whose Liam?” She asks one night. They were lying in bed together and she notices there is a tattoo on his chest, of that name surrounded by a wave. He had a few tattoos but this one was different, hidden, tucked away, sentimental. She had noticed it a few times but felt like it was never the right time.

 “He was my brother.”  Was . Oh. Shit. “He died about ten years ago.”

 “Will you tell me about him?” They had been together almost every day, and she loved learning all she could about him, she knew little about his family, just that his mom died and his dad was an alcoholic and he didn’t have a relationship with him.

 “Liam was my best friend. He practically raised me after our mother died and our fathers drinking got worse. He wasn't the best in school so he dropped out early and joined the Royal Navy. He wanted to rise up through the ranks and make a name for himself. There were a lot of people who didn’t agree with the royals and the money being spent on the Navy, he got into quite a few bar fights when those kinds of people liked to pick fights. He’d come out battered and bruised, but one night he got into a fight with a big bloke who hit with-That he didn’t-the force that Liam got hit with.” This was the first time she had seen him get emotional and flustered, and she could figure out the end of that story, so she laces her fingers with his and let him recover. “It's why I came to the states rather than pick a uni closer to home, I had to get away, I wanted a fresh start where I wasn’t constantly reminded of him.” 

 She understood why he was the way he was in college, his pain was fresh and he didn’t know how to control his emotions so he likely lashed out when he got angry, Graham probably reminded him of his brother which explains why he always complained about him giving him a worse time than the others. She wanted to be there for him as much as she could, help him heal.

 This was the third time Emma had fallen in love, and she wasn’t afraid anymore. Her feelings were developing faster and she found herself looking at the sun rather than waiting for the rain. Killian felt like home. Her mother of course is thrilled and asks when she can meet him, to which she tells her soon. And when they do make the trip to her small town, he is the perfect gentleman, bringing flowers to her mother and a British beer that her dad loves. They welcome him with open arms, and despite not having any family left, Killian had found one in the woman he loved.

 Her family loves him. Which is when years pass and he is asking for their blessing they give it to him with no doubt or hesitation. 

 “Emma. When I first met you I didn’t know how important you would become in my life. These past few years have been the happiest I have felt in a long time, and I would be a bloody idiot if I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

 Emma cries. She loved Killian with all of her heart. She used to dream of a fairytale when she was younger, and as cliche as it sounded, she just had to kiss a few frogs before finally finding her Prince Charming. And when she takes her fathers arm as she walks down the aisle, dressed in white, she has to force herself not to cry so she doesn’t ruin her makeup. But it's his wedding vows that end up making her cry the most.

 “Loving you Emma was the best thing to happen to me. You’re like a book I can’t put down, you make me excited every single day and I love talking about you to people. I swear you have the power to change a bad boy and a broken thing who didn’t know he was capable of love into a good man who loves with every fibre of his being. With this ring I am also giving you my heart, and a promise of a life together filled with light and love.”

 When Emma falls in love, she falls hard and she dreams of a fairytale come true, with Killian she felt just that and more.

Finally. A question that fulfills two of my special interests. So, let’s think about this using every Barbie film since 2001 since there are a lot of materials to think about and plenty of characters to consider.

So, I guess we’ll start off with these group’s gamer boy, Yoosung. I feel like you could get him invested in more of a modern era Barbie so the films after 2009. Cliche but, Video Game Hero has a whole story arc about solving video games by programming as you venture in a plot that’s better than anything SAO could ever dream to be. Let’s get Yoosung into more games instead of leaving him to climb through LOLOL.

Jaehee deserves Barbie & the Diamond Castle film. Which is, hands-down, one of the more sapphic films in the series. What’s more powerful than learning how to work together with your best friend, singing songs and finding yourselves in a world of chaos? Nothing, you’re right. It’s what she deserves and this would be a great watch as Jaehee starts to realize more of her romantic inclinations toward MC.

Zen is one I would give to Swan Lake. I feel like he would be able to identify with that story in more ways than one. Feeling trapped and unable to live the life he wants because he seems to be nothing more than an “oddity” instead of a guy with a huge heart that shines on stage. It doesn’t matter if he feels “Cursed,” he will make the best of his situation, just as Odette does in that film since it has a much brighter ending then the original ballet does.

I know what you’re thinking here and you’re going to ask, hey, what would I give to Jumin? Well, you’re in luck. I’ll be happy to inform you that he’s getting to sit back, relax, and engage with Princess and the Pauper. I feel like he enjoys the aspect of the original story, but now they’ve added charm to it with cats and that happens to be easy to watch with Elizabeth. But, really, he would enjoy watching two worlds collide and the lessons that come from realizing everyone could have a way of relating to each other if given a chance.

Saeyoung would love Star Light Adventure, hands down. It’s the Barbie sci-fi films of the century and since it’s one of the more modern films, it doesn’t get a lot of love or attention. But, Saeyoung would love the hell out of this movie for a lot of reason I can’t spoil to you. But, let me tell you, he would love to be Barbie in this situation, surfing the stars to save space from losing its glimmer... and the little pet sidekick is cute.

V is one you’re gonna need to hear out. Okay, so, Magic of Pegasus is probably the most sassy Barbie film ever. She is a stubborn girl who dreams of nothing in this life but ice skating, but when her family and life is threatened by a wizard, it turns out she has to learn more about her family and the curse that came to take them away. Conflict happens in more ways than one, and I think V would be able to see his younger self in this movie, as well as his current self, the one who is at his wits end trying to decide what’s good for him. Literally the comeback and all the quips in this film are teenage V.

GE Saeran is my love. Therefore, I’m giving him Rapunzel since that’s always a story he can relate to. I appreciate that this Rapunzel has the ability to draw and paint her way to her freedom with a magic paintbrush set, and he would love that brand of whimsy once it was shown to him. Also, this movie has a dragon... who doesn’t like dragons? I debated if there would be a better option for him but this is what makes the most sense to me.

Vanderwood is my most cliche answer by far since Spy Squad is a movie about spies. But, I feel like this movie would be comforting to him somehow. Just this thought of Vanderwood thinking about how he wishes that the job had more a lot more like this, not corrupted, just doing good for others and not losing yourself to despair and death. It’s a movie where Vanderwood claims to be hate-watching it but... not really. There’s something about plucky spies who are too happy for the sake of it... cough cough, reminds him of the brat.

Rika... might be another cliche decision but i feel like this is the best choice in this situation. Barbie did a take on the Christmas Carol, and it’s about an opera singer instead. I feel like Rika would like this film despite how many already are aware of the plot, simply because this story is about a girl who has friends, but her trauma and frustration with the past begin to isolate her from the people in her life who love her. I think Rika needs a reminder that she’s more than all of her anguish and fear, and seeing someone overcome that and get her closest friends back could do wonders.

Bonus OCs!

Lila gets The Nutcracker, not just because it was my favorite as a child, but because there’s a lot of warmth in the story itself. It’s about not giving up when you’re faced with impossible circumstance. She would be able to do that since she’s the Saeran MC, you know? She has a heart that won’t shatter when the going gets tough. Yet, she would never be able to believe she was a princess... much like how Clara in the story doesn’t realize she’s the Sugarplum Princess until her strength reveals itself in the last second.

Judas... yeah, we already know he’s going to say that Princess Charm School would be his favorite. I assume it’s because he sometimes wishes that he had been born to better parents who cared for him instead of the ones he had. It’s a cruel dream of his to discover his parents weren’t really his parents at all, but it’ll never be the case. So, he can project onto Barbie who gets to live happily with a lot of friends and a newfound family that wanted her from the start. Of course, it’s got to have drama, too, which is why the conflict here as why this princess was far from her kingdom is right for him.

Minji is our down to earth girl. I’m giving her both of the Mermaid Tale movies as they’re both very enjoyable films that she’d take to like bread and butter. This is a series about a surfer who discovers her mother is a mermaid, and tries to find her way back to her only to discover the kingdom is in need of help. I will say it’s enemies to lovers in the second film when you meet Barbie’s newest rival and it happens to be one of Minji’s favorite tropes in media. You would think I might be thinking of a more food centric Barbie movie, but, nope, it’s about sports!

!! sure thing! it kinda depends what you're looking for but here's a few favorites of mine!! I’m gonna assume since my account is practically just talentless nana you’ve already read/watched it, but if you haven’t that’s definitely my biggest recommendation! 

if ur looking for smth sad!! 

princess tutu (anime) - a magical girl story about a duck who becomes a human girl and then a magical girl. she's trying to bring back pieces of her emotionless crushes heart, which seems innocent enough, but the story turns into a desperate attempt to find a happy ending in a world literally created to prevent one. it's really sad and cute and a big favorite of mine, and the end of it had me bawling 😭

land of the lustrous (manga) - a story about a gem-person named phos who lives in a world where their kind is at risk of being shattered and turned into jewelry by another species called the lunarians. it takes a while before the series really takes a dark term, but once it happens it really happens. reading it invoked a sense of dread in me nothing else has ever given me, and I really can't stress enough how good and depressing this manga is 😭 I suggest u watch the anime first and then read the manga! anime leaves off at around chapter 30 i think. this also had me bawling when I caught up to it. on call, with my friend 😭 very embarrassing

madoka magica - this one’s really popular so I think you’ve already heard of it, but it puts a spin on the usual magical girl trope, making it dark and depressing. they’re making a new movie, so if you haven’t watched it, this is a great time to get into it! it’s also very gay. MSJDKDJ it’s really good and sad and the characters are all incredible. there’s lots of hidden symbolism and meaning, and lots of foreshadow, so even rewatching it you’ll always find something new to enjoy <3

toilet bound hanako kun - this one’s also really popular so you’ve probably also already heard of it, but if you haven’t: the show follows a girl named nene yashiro, a hopeless romantic with a crush on a boy. she hears a rumor about a ghost named hanako, who grants wishes, and follows the steps to summon him. some things happen, and she ends up taking a job as his assistant, helping him to defeat magical apparitions in order to keep the school safe. it sounds simple, but it actually gets really, really sad and the story is really good </3 I’m not sure what they could possibly do for an ending on this one that would be 100% happy. it’s good! i really suggest it.

the promised neverland - season one of the anime is incredible, from there I’d say you should swap to the manga bc s2 does an awful job covering it. It’s a story about orphan kids who find out the orphanage they’ve been living at is actually a farm to make smart human kids to feed to monstrous demons. the manga goes downhill a little at the end, but it’s still a pretty nice read and it’s really, really good for a while

magia record - a spin-off anime to Madoka magica, set in an alternate universe. this one’s very sad too, and introduces a lot of new characters, while bringing back the old, iconic ones from the original pmmm. it’s based on a game, and the anime ending differs from the games </333 the ending for the game is actually happy though and the anime is,,sadder but still nicer than pmmm. i think this one is a good one if you like sad content, but still want to see the characters happy in the end. and all the original Madoka magica cast live! so!!! 

school live - I REALLY DONT WANT TO SAY WHAT THIS ONES ABT BC LIKE the twist at the end is so good so it’s better to just go in blind but this anime is really really good and very very sad, but the ending is hopeful!! so!!! the manga is pretty good too, and it’s completed, but I feel like the anime is a lot more enjoyable

zombieland saga - a story about 7 zombie girls from different eras trying to form an idol group! it’s so well written and so nice to watch, it can be really, really sad or really, really funny 😭 it’s a great anime and all the characters in it are very lovable <3 it also has a canon trans girl! as one of the main zombie girls! so it’s very neat. It’s one of my all time favorite animes and it’s a lot of fun

bocchi the rock! - an anime about an introverted girl with social anxiety who wants to start a band, but doesn’t know how to talk to people. it’s super funny and super sweet, and at least in my case really relatable <3 the show does all kinds of really neat things, switching to stop motion, 3d, live action, etc, and the characters are all great. it’s a really creative show and it handles social anxiety in a much more realistic and relatable way than most other shows like this do. 

spy x family - a very cute and funny manga/anime about a spy named loid who needs to make a fake family in order to complete his new mission of investigating a very prestigious school. he adopts a girl, named Anya, and gains a fake wife named yor. but apparently anya has the ability to read minds, and yor is secretly an assassin. nobody knows each other’s secret identities, except for anya, who knows bc she can read their minds, and they continue to live together for different reasons, as they slowly grow attached to each other and become a real family

brand new animal - a studio trigger anime about an anthropomorphic tanuki girl, called a beastman, named michiru, who used to be human. she moves into a town consisted exclusively with beastman, and tries to discover just what happened to her to become one, and where her best friend who went missing is </3 this one isn’t a slice of life, it’s more of an action show ?? but it’s really good, the animation is lovely and the art and colors are really pretty and cute <3 it’s a really good anime and it’s only 12 episodes, so it’s a quick watch!!

After an unknown length of time in sensory deprivation prison, Ned gets a visit from Varys who catches him up on the state of things, and reminds Ned he still has people to protect or not.

The reader, having spent far too long trying to estimate the size of a courtyard with asymmetric garden beds from pictures that were all in isometric views and is thus quite grumpy, is being perhaps a little unkind to the characters tonight.

Cracks ran down his face, fissures opening in his flesh, and he reached up and ripped the mask away. It was not Robert at all; it was Littlefinger, grinning, mocking him. When he opened his mouth to speak, his lies turned into pale grey moths and took wing.

I still kinda wish that had made it into the show. They cut out such good mental health update moments!!!

Not surprised Ned's going through the mental wringer though, between the pre-existing mental exhaustion, the pain from his leg, what ever coming of milk of the poppy is doing and the full on sensory deprivation of this cell? Ick. Like seriously ick, this is like the black magic recipe for near instant mental breakdown.

Ned remembered the moment when all the smiles died, when Prince Rhaegar urged his horse past his own wife, the Dornish princess Elia Martell, to lay the queen of beauty laurel in Lyanna's lap. He could see it still: a crown of winter roses, blue as frost. Ned Stark reached out his hand to grasp the flowery crown, but beneath the pale blue petals the thorns lay hidden. He felt them clawing at his skin, sharp and cruel, saw the slow trickle of blood run down his fingers, and woke, trembling, in the dark.

I feel like that is such a good metaphor for that whole thing. A large chunk (not necessarily the majority, but certainly not a small number from my observations) tend to think Lyanna and Rhaegar were romantic (I blame the show, just as a default maneuver because it saves time) but he was a married man and she was a literal child. She died giving birth at sixteen. Which means she had to have been with Rhaegar since closer to at least fifteen, but almost certainly younger. If this happened in the modern era, we'd be disgusted. Or maybe the 'but it's so romantic true love, secret marriage UwU' crew would do a flip and join the 'this young girl clearly seduced this married man with her feminine wiles' brigade. Goodness knows the bullshit in Hollywood proves that's a real reaction people have.

But back to the metaphor.

Because part of the narrative, especially the one driven by the show, really tried to dress it up like it was supposed to be romantic, this 'love' that dragged an entire country to bloody war, but underneath, once you start to actually look, if you start to feel it out, it's nasty and full of pain.

But also: how heavy must the weight of this gotten for Ned? The guilt for not saving her, for not keeping his promise perfectly, for the harm trying to keep that promise caused, intentional or not? And he has this weird "Even now, he was a Stark of Winterfell, and his grief and rage froze hard inside him." thing going on.

I am prescribing this entire family to therapy.

"- They taught me that each man has a role to play, in life as well as in mummery. So it is at court. The King's Justice must be fearsome, the master of coin must be frugal, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard must be valiant... and the master of whispers must be sly and obsequious and without scruple. Is that how you sleep at night Varys? By telling yourself 'it's just your job, what could you possibly do to help people?' Is that how you justify yourself? Everything you do is for the people, it's all for the peace. Then why not stop Jon Arryn's murder? Why not stop Littlefinger sewing the seeds that started this farce? Or did your information somehow miss that when you seemingly know everything else?

Either you know everything, and you allowed this all to happen, or you don't know as much as you claim. Which is it, Varys?

You disparage Ned's honour and the court for playing the game of thrones in much the same breath. Did it never occur to you, that the reason the game of thrones goes on, is because corruption is allowed to fester within the establishment of power, because any time someone with honour or a sense of actual justice tries to do anything to better the government, they get cut down and left to rot in a ditch.

"Or are you in league with Littelfinger?" That seemed to amuse the eunuch. "I would sooner wed the Black Goat of Qohor. -"

Now I'm just imagining Littelfinger and Varys playing little league baseball, complete with uniforms. "Black Goat of Qohor" hmm? hang on a tic... ... Not sure if Satan or Christmas (Gävle) Goat.

This world is so cruel. It shouldn't be, but the people who would say "it's not fair, so I'll make it fair" either never have the power to do so, or don't have the power to do so long enough to actually do so.

Not to be a complete theatre kid, but I just remembered the Queen of Night aria from the Magic Flute exists.

Act One:

A young girl is dreaming the story of a prince.

The Prince is being pursued by a snake monster. Three female servants of the Queen of Night appear, kill it, and show the Prince a picture of the Queen’s daughter. The Princess has been captured and imprisoned in the Temple of the Sun by the Sun’s priest, and he vows to save her.

To aid him, the women give him a magic flute and magic bells to protect him, as well as several spirits to guide him.

Act Two:

On arriving at the Temple of the Sun, the Prince learns he’s running in false information- the Queen of Night is evil, not the priest. He proceeds to get through the temple, charming people with his bells (literally) and flute, and encounters the priest who had apparently been trying to protect the Princess from her mother. The man determines that the Prince must pass trials if he wishes to become the Princess’s husband.

I’ll gloss over the trials because I want to focus on the legendary Queen of Night aria for a moment, with the translation as follows:

The vengeance of Hell boils in my heart,

Death and despair flame about me!

If Sarastro does not through you feel

The pain of death,

Then you will be my daughter nevermore.

Disowned may you be forever,

Abandoned may you be forever,

Destroyed be forever

Tl;dr: Princess of Night, kill the Priest of the Sun or I’m disowning you.

The Princess decides not to do that, the Prince completes his trials, they get married, and the Queen is summarily banished into eternal night while the world celebrates the dawn of a new era.

It’s definitely not one to one and I have to cherry pick to compare the two, but looking at this from an Elden Ring context is very interesting. The female servants of night who are uncannily good at murder, bells that control people, guiding spirits. In this case, the Lunar Princess kills the priest of the Sun. You have to pass trials to become Elden Lord. Marrying the princess can win you the game, though in this case you both go into eternal night forever instead of ruling under the sun.

Something I’ll be thinking over, anyway.

this was during the time when H was dating Taylor Swift

the first time YN truly felt that she was losing him in someway (we all know that's not gonna happen)

realizing for the first time that she likes H more than just a friend/band mate

I actually was inspired by this song to write this blurb but i have an idea for another blurb along the lines of the song

wouldn't label this as a love song per say but i definitely agree that it was around the time she was dating Matthew
