Whumptober Day 7: "Can you hear me?"
“Your Highness? Your Highness!”
The Prince is missing. He’s. How can he be missing? It’s the middle of the night. He shouldn’t be anywhere.
Zang Ming had half woken for some strange reason he has yet to work out himself. He’d been ready to turn over and go back to sleep except… except… Prince Bai snores, quiet things that have become part of Zang Ming’s life, something he hopes he will be able to keep when he finally finds a healer willing to take his eyes and give them to his highness.
There was no snoring when Zang Ming woke.
The first, worst fear, the one that had almost choked him on the realisation was quickly put away when he found the bed empty, only to be replaced with the knowledge that that means that the Prince is missing. He could be anywhere.
“Your Highness?”
Zang Ming finds himself running through the palace, calling out for him. He hopes he’s just walked in his sleep. That he’s still here somewhere, that he hasn’t been taken.
A dark form, curled up on the floor. A relief, and then a worry again, when the Prince is unconscious, a small pool of blood beside his head where he has tripped and fallen.
“Your Highness. Please. Wake up.” Zang Ming tries to keep the anxiety out of his voice, but he’s fairly certain he’s not succeeding.
He’s sent one of the guards off to find a healer, and Zang Ming can’t, doesn’t dare, move the Prince on his own. He has pulled his prince’s head onto his lap in a terrible breach of propriety, but he couldn’t bare to see him lying there on the cold floor.
The cut is only small, now that Zang Ming can see it, now that he has gently dabbed the blood away with his sleeve. But still. Still he hasn’t woken up. Zang Ming is his retainer. He should have been there. He should have prevented this from happening.
A few tears drop onto Prince Bai’s forehead. Zang Ming brushes them away with his bloodied sleeve. It would not do for anyone to know exactly how worried he is. These are not the tears of a failed retainer.
A low, quiet noise emanates from near Zang Ming’s hands.
“Your Highness! Can you hear me?”
“Zang Ming?” Prince Bai slurs. “You’re here.”
Prince Bai reaches a hand up and finds Zang Ming’s unerringly, squeezing gently.
“Of course I am. Always.” He hopes Xiao Chong can’t hear the emotions in his voice. He will always be there for him. He will.

The number one most endearing thing to me about tgcf is the way the flashbacks make me feel like I’m watching Hong-er grow up. I feel like I’m watching a montage of that trembling little kid gather every ounce of courage and strength the world has to offer and slowly learn how to become somebody he can be content with. Somebody who has likes and dislikes, desires and preferences, and especially the freedom of choice, the freedom of anything, really. So now when I see Hua Cheng, legendary ghost king Crimson Rain Sought Flower, all I can see is that little kid who grew up. And that kid was always loved by the one he wanted to catch up to most in the world. He achieved exactly what he wanted and he deserves every ounce of power he’s acquired.
