Drawing Pokemis AU has consumed me for the past few days.
Way, way too many thoughts under the cut:
Valjean is a pokemon professor with a dark secret past that specializes in grass pokemon (tree pruner/gardener), and doesn’t like talking to people. His neighbor in this small town is Fantine (who lives in this AU), and she does odd jobs for him when Cosette is young. There’s also a shady pokemon center run by the Thenardiers in town. One day Fantine leaves a note that she has gone to search for work elsewhere and has left Cosette with the Thenardiers. Valjean feels guilty that he never took the time to get to know her and help her. He rescues Cosette from the Thenardiers to care for her until Fantine returns.
If this was a game the player would play as Cosette and their rival/friend would be Eponine. Cosette has a Swablu (castle on a cloud ref, plus she gets compared to birds a lot) that her mom left her, but she prefers ghost and bug types (is this in character??? idk). I think Cosette would have a Shuppet as well (a ghost that feeds on negative/envious feelings, made from a doll), that started hanging around when she was with the Thenardiers but she has come to love. Eponine has one too, for parallels! Eponine’s main pokemon is a Purrloin, which I’m sure her parents thought would be useful for stealing but Eponine pampers it. Idk what Valjean’s main pokemon is. I’m leaning towards Sawsbuck? Maybe he has a Seedot sidekick because I think it would be cute.
Maybe the Thenardiers skip town with their money after Valjean pays them off. Years go by and Fantine is still missing. When Cosette is 10-13 Eponine comes back into town, having run away from her parents to look for her missing brother, Gavroche. Cosette wants to look for Fantine, somehow convinces Valjean to let her start her pokemon journey, and the two kids team up to go search for their family members. Maybe Eponine got news that Fantine was last seen near the Elite Four so Cosette is determined to become a pokemon master to find her.
Maybe the Patron-Minette is the evil team in this AU (Team Twilight? Team Dusk?? I’ll say Team PM for now). I’m thinking the ABC Friends are another team that people think are evil at first because they occupy the Elite Four or the gyms or something after Champion Lamarque dies because the whole pokemon master/gym leader system is corrupt and maybe Champion Lamarque was about to expose it but he died??? And Javert is part of the International Police like Looker, and has a Mightyena (get it, dog-son of a wolf) as his main pokemon. My husband suggested he have a Shednja (because it can only be hit by super effective attacks, foreshadowing his derailment), which I liked too. Javert is against both Team PM and Team ABC, and wants to uphold the current system. Is having 3 opposing forces too complicated for a pokemon game? Probably.
Eponine finds Gavroche, who had joined with Team ABC. Idk where Fantine is, but Cosette eventually finds her. Maybe she was stranded somewhere and ran out of money because the Thenardiers continued to extort her with their Team PM grunts. They have a happy reunion, and maybe Cosette and Eponine have to join Team ABC to take down Team PM and fix everything and it’s a happy ending somehow. And of course at the end Eponine and Cosette have to awaken some pair of ancient legendary pokemon that give them the power to save the day.
If I had to give Team ABC poketypes to specialize in, no overlaps:
Enjolras – Fire (perhaps a secondary typing of Ice)
Courfeyrac – Grass (his “radiance” quality is represented by the Solar Beam attack)
Combeferre – Water (these first three types balance each other out see) (also he has a Combee)
Feuilly – Ground (almost made Combeferre Ground)
Bahorel – Fighting
Prouvaire – Ghost
Joly -Psychic
Bossuet – either Normal or Dark (Dark for bad luck, could have a Murkrow as well as an Absol to mitigate disaster)
Grantaire – Poison :D

That reminds me of the notes I took when I read through the novel. I completely forgot about them, but they do have names and associations, though not all of them apply to the show version of the eunuchs. Which reminds me of some unfinished art I made of (literally) cut-sleeve Jin Xuan:

Yeah sure I can make a The Blood of Youth character reference guide with all the characters and their alternate names and key associations! This will be easy and won’t take too long!

Lei Mengsha vs. Ye Xiaoying & Jin Yan Laugh Comparison
On an acting level, there’s a strong possibility that Lei Mengsha’s laughing style in Dashing Youth was inspired by the shared laugh between Ye Xiaoying and Jin Yan in the Blood of Youth. Lei Mengsha is referenced in that scene, as well as his friendship with Ye Xiaoying.
With a more in-universe consideration, I do wonder if Jin Yan purposely laughed more like Lei Mengsha in that moment, subtly (or not-so-subtly) reminding Ye Xiaoying of his lost friend in his attempt to manipulate/win over the general to his cause.
Another possibility that could go along with this is that Jin Yan could have had some degree of friendship with Lei Mengsha in the past, and would be familiar enough with his laugh to replicate it. In the scene with Ye Xiaoying, when Jin Yan talked about Lei Mengsha’s tragic fate, he did seem quite passionate.
Going even further, perhaps the three of them used to laugh together.

Do you have any thoughts on why Happy Ghost is the way he is?
Thanks for the ask! 😺 Not much is known about Happy Ghost, but there is some information to glean from the show and characters in other media that could be useful to compare him to in order to extrapolate some possibilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To start with, there's his laugh. He considers it a breathing issue, and he's had the problem for a long time, perhaps his whole life. It worsens when he's excited, whether the excitement comes from fear or joy. His laugh nearly got him in trouble with the Ghost Valley Chief in this scene, and it's possible that it's gotten him into trouble before.
There is less information on his smile, other than how he carves a matching one on his victim's faces as a sort of trademark when he kills.
This is where the comparisons to other characters come in. The most obvious choice would be the Dark Knight's Joker, who also has what's known as a Glasgow smile, which is a wound caused by making a cut from the corners of a victim's mouth up to the ears, leaving a smile-shaped scar. The way the Joker got his scars is left ambiguous in the film, either from an abusive father, or because of loan sharks, or from something else entirely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is another character defined by his smile: Gwynplaine, from The Man Who Laughs, a 1928 film based on the 1869 novel by Victor Hugo. As a boy, Gwynplaine was surgically given a permanent grin "so he might laugh forever at his fool of a father" who was considered a rebel. Growing up, Gwynplaine was ashamed of his smile and performed in plays where audiences would laugh at him for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It may be possible that Happy Ghost had his writing and performance inspired by both of these characters. The chaos and cruelty of the Joker, and the vulnerability and shame of Gwynplaine.
As for what I think happened to make Happy Ghost the way he is, I think it started when he laughed at the wrong person at the wrong time, and was given his smile because of it. Then, in his anger for how the world treated him for his smile, Happy Ghost decided to carve one in any enemy he considered cruel, and that eventually got him in enough trouble for him to be sent to Ghost Valley.
Once there, he would find Wuchang Gui, head of the Top Ten Ghosts. Wuchang Gui, a eunuch, who would know exactly what it was like to have a scar that changes how the rest of the world sees him. Wuchang Gui, who would welcome him to the valley with open arms, tempting promises, and a green smile.

- Noxus prizes strength above all else, defining it by three core principles. Vision. The top of the triangle, charting a course and having the wisdom to navigate it. This form is your base, child. Your eyes see what others don't. Might. Bending your environment to your will. Your speed is improving. But eventually you need force. - Too much force exposes you to risk. - Indeed. The last is guile. Phantoms. Tricksters. Mages. Absent honour. Absent accountability. Remember this, Caitlyn. Tunnels in your eyes. Lava in your veins. Shadows in your heart. This is the truth of combat.
