I had a soft, tragic dream about Wuchang Gui and Happy Ghost, and throughout it there were beautiful close-ups of grasshoppers and toads in moonlit green grass, crickets and frogs in sunlit gold grass, and when I woke up, it occurred to me: the color scheme, the height difference—this pair of ghosts is Frog-and-Toad-adjacent.
Anyways, in the dream, there was a mad scientist woman named General Ma who captured Happy Ghost and Gu Xiang and took away their ability to speak. General Ma kept them in an abandoned lumber mill and slowly numbed their minds with poison. Wuchang Gui tried to rescue them but almost died. Eventually Happy Ghost managed to escape, but when he reunited with him, Wuchang Gui’s memories had been lost and he didn’t recognize Happy Ghost. Then Gandalf pointed out a cricket mounted on a frog and said there was hope.

I love how much information this exchange gives about Jin Xuan and Jin Yan’s relationship, despite only lasting a few moments. Even though Jin Yan is much taller, he hunches down in order to be below Jin Xuan’s level. He puts on a tantrum to show how contrite he is, then drops it almost immediately for a sly, satisfied smirk once it’s clear he’s not in trouble. It’s a performance, and Jin Yan even glances towards the other eunuchs—to make sure they’re watching? To see if they’re jealous? There is also some ambiguity in the degree to which Jin Xuan is in control of Jin Yan and how successfully Jin Yan is manipulating Jin Xuan. Jin Xuan nonetheless seems unfazed by Jin Yan’s behavior. In contrast, Jin Yan barely pays attention to the start of Jin Xuan’s lecture, his finger twitching in excitement/arousal while raising his posture and taking a breath. Was it the attention that so thrilled him, Jin Xuan’s words, or his touch?
