I think the biggest thing for me is how wildly uncomfortable they both look in these pictures, but in completely different ways. And then also that in this picture, she seems to be visibly recoiling/leaning away from him:
I am by no means a body language expert, so I'm happy for others to weigh in and share their thoughts, but Michael and AL just do not look like they belong together. To paraphrase @thetardisisblueandroseistoo, they look like when a bridesmaid and groomsman who have never met before are asked to walk down the aisle together at a wedding. Of course, the discomfort could be because there were a bunch of paparazzi taking pictures and cameras flashing in their faces (which is certainly not an easy thing to deal with). But it's such a strange thing to think that normally their body language is reversed (AL leaning into Michael's space and him not leaning into hers), and here he seems to actually be trying (somewhat), yet she just looks repulsed.
I've written previously on my blog about how AL only seems to like Michael when he looks a certain way that she deems "presentable," and when he doesn't, she resorts to making passive-aggressive comments about his appearance. This seems to track with whatever is going on here, as it is very reminiscent of snarky comments she made when he had a similar look and build for the role of Chris Tarrant in Quiz:
It seems possible, then, that the discomfort also emanates from the fact that she is embarrassed by how he looks/how they look together on the red carpet.
Another possible contributing factor is that Michael hates to shave--we know it's not how he prefers to present himself to the world--and so it almost feels like he's hiding in a too-big suit as a result. It pains me to even say it, because I do love Michael and I think he always looks so handsome, but whoever dressed him/put him in that suit did not do him any favors. Especially because we have seen him happier and in a much more well-tailored suit at the Pride of Britain awards in 2019:
It's just so jarring to see Michael by himself on a red carpet (or with David, or with any of his previous girlfriends) as compared to with her. There was even a PR article in the Daily Mail about how "loved up" they looked, which came across as incredibly forced and hollow. As always, I know I could be wrong about all this, but the fact that I and so many others felt so much secondhand discomfort upon seeing these pictures seems to speak volumes...
New red carpet pics and ugh what is wrong with APAT? Can’t she look happy even for paparazzi? And why does Michael always look so uncomfortable next to her in public?
Also girl needs to know how to smile if she plans to be on screen. Best she can do is a grimace 🤦🏻♀️
...I think you're mistaking 'grimace' for 'resting smug-ass bitch face,' but why quibble?
#michael sheen#welsh seduction machine#pride of britain 2023#they just do not give 'couple' energy and never have#the whole thing makes me sad tbh#i just hope Michael knows that he is lovely#and deserves good things#and i wish he could be with the person who energizes him instead of draining him#Michael is a talented actor#but he can't hide his true feelings as himself#anna lundberg#discourse#reblog

Africa after the Berlin conference
🇵🇱 "Wielki atlas historyczny", Demart, 2023
via cartesdhistoire
From 1880 onwards, a number of European nations set out to conquer Africa, not for economic reasons (by definition, they were unaware of the continent's resources) but for political and strategic reasons: France sought to make up for its losses in Europe; Great Britain wanted to compensate for its isolation in Europe by enlarging and exalting its empire; Germany and Italy wanted to enhance their prestige through imperial exploits. This new imperialism is thus a nationalistic phenomenon.
The objectives of the West African Conference, or Congo Conference, held in Berlin from Nov. 15, 1884 to Feb. 26, 1885, were to “regulate the freedom of trade in the Congo and Niger basins” and to “prevent misunderstandings and disputes which might arise in the future from the taking of new possessions on the coasts of Africa”. The General Act adopted at the time made no mention of partition The two most important colonial empires were the British and the French. The British system of colonization was profoundly different from the French system (which made colonization the vehicle for the ideals of 1789): for the English, utilitarianism remained the principle of the colonial enterprise. This rule was fueled by a quiet pride that rested on the consciousness of indisputable superiority, and maintained the distance between the master builder and the executors, leading to a solid indifference to local customs, a singular ease at contenting themselves with indirect administration and a disdain for human rapprochement and moral outreach. But extreme vigilance, tenacious energy and continuity of action made it possible to correct excesses or errors. Expansion took place from the coast, and then, after zones of influence had been negotiated on paper by diplomats, borders were gradually demarcated on the ground, sometimes taking into account pre-colonial local realities. The transformation of these limits into frontiers was a long process, requiring multiple adjustments, and was, eventually, only effective at the time of independence.

What are your favourite Leah, Lucy, Keira, Alexia, Mapi, Less & Ona fits?
fashion is NOT my thing, i just know photography and editing because i do that as well, have been since i was 11 and if anyone is thinking wow luca you have a lot of hobbies, i have autism and adhd, what do you expect? okay, off the top of my head...
(also my bestie studies fashion history and has literally made me clothes from nothing so that's why i can use big words)
alessia: pride of britain 2022 (the black dress) the dress and the hair that night i loved it - i know she's said now that it was uncomfortable but i think she just nailed this one and i want to see more red carpet looks with a dress kind of shaped like this because it suits her. honestly tho her casual outfits suit her every time but when someone else dresses her just NO fire her stylist
lucy: just anything aligne, it just always suits her but there's too many photos but especially the fit for barça v real madrid with the tank top
leah: in a suit, again too many to choose from just a suit full stop. spoty this year, both wimbledons and the elle style awards are highlights off the top of my head
keira: my fashion guru, that comfy style is exactly how i dress so all of it ngl, we have such similar styles but like the winner has to be fifa: the best 2023 because i feel like she finally wore something on a red carpet that she wanted to wear not that she felt like she had to wear and i loved it
ona: again, very similar fashion sense, she wears a lot of hoodies and that's just a mood, hoodies are the best, there isn't really a fit that comes to mind. she needs to get a couple of well deserved nominations so she starts hitting the red carpets
mapi: again too many hits to choose from but the red dress from the ballon d'or lives rent free in my brain
alexia: i lowkey adore when she dresses a little more femme. that walk in when she showed up with the little jacket and short skirt was so good but she normally aces the fits
ngl this is a random question for me but i loved answering it

Their “guerrilla protests” on Britain’s roads, at art galleries, museums, and cultural and sporting events have enraged the press, politicians and the public alike. But now experts have said they believe climate activists’ most important weapon could be “the strategic use of nonviolent disruptive tactics”. ... The findings come as Just Stop Oil’s supporters complete their 12th week of slow marching protests on London’s streets and amid uproar about lengthy queues at Wimbledon, where security was tightened to counter climate protests. ... The experts who study social movements not only believe that strategic disruption can be an effective tactic, but that it is the most important tactical factor for a social movement’s success. “This points out how our intuitions can be flawed when it comes to understanding social change, and how we shouldn’t take people’s first reactions as the indicator of an effective protest.” ... Prof Bart Cammaerts, said: “Whether we like it or not, the history of social change is also a history of political contestation and disruption. Disruption of everyday life is often the best way to receive media attention, generate visibility for a cause and above all to push political and economic elites to compromise and accept change, if only to protect their own interests.”
