Scotland’s most famous Weatherman Ian MacAskill was born on July 28th 1938 in Glasgow.

McCaskill went to Queen’s Park Secondary in Glasgow, and then to the University of Glasgow, where he studied geology and chemistry.

He began his career as an RAF meteorologist before working for the Met Office, McCaskill began presenting weather forecasts for the BBC in 1978 Ian said of himself “I think I was good,” and “I cheered up people – and I irritated a lot of Englishmen who didn’t like an ethnic Scot delivering the weather.” Anyone who can irritate the English is a hero in Scotland!!!

In 1994 McCaskill was voted Britain’s sexiest weather presenter and often received affectionate fan mail.

The forecasts did not always get it right, or even nearly right. In 1987, his colleague Michael Fish was ridiculed for saying a hurricane was not going to happen, just a few hours before it did. Later – much later, 18 years in fact – McCaskill confessed to being the guilty party who had given Fish the forecast that day. and continued to do so until retiring in 1998. He continued to appear on television afterwards as a presenter, on adverts and even as a reality show contestant.

Ian was diagnosed with dementia in 2011 and died on Saturday, December 10th, 2016.

Happy birthday Scottish weather presenter Carol Kirkwood born on May 29th, 1962 in Morar.

Born Carol MacKellaig, her parents ran a hotel at Morar, she has 7 sisters and brothers.

Carol was educated at Lochaber High School in Fort William before studying Commerce at Napier College in Edinburgh, qualifying with a BA. Carol joined the BBC’s secretarial reserve in London and it wasn’t long before she was presenting short slots on Radio Scotland, Radio 2 and 4.

She got married to hockey player Jimmy Kirkwood from Northern Ireland, they divorced in 2008. at the time Carol took a break from broadcasting, in recruitment and then as a training consultant for a management consultancy, returning to now defunct cable TV channel, Windsor TV, latterly called Wire TV, along with Sacha Baron Cohen, rejoining the BBC as a freelance reporter in 1993, also working on Independent television for Harlech Television (HTV) in a bi-monthly show Talking Issues.

In 1996 Carol started doing the job we know her best for, on The Weather Channel but after it closed down she underwent training under the guidance of the BBC at the Met Office, and returned to the BBC after her training, where sh has been ever since, working mainly on the morning news programmes. She presented the BBC’s The Weather Show and is also a regular contributor and reporter for The One Show.

Kirkwood won awards for best TV Weather Presenter in 2003, 2008, 2009 and 2012–2017.She received an Honorary Fellowship from Inverness College, part of University of the Highlands and Islands in 2015.

Kirkwood has been in a relationship with her now fiancé since 2021 but has kept his identity mostly hidden from the public, having only referred to him by his first name.

However, it's now been revealed that the BBC Breakfast star's fiancé is fitness fan Steve Randall, who at 47 is about 13 years Carol's junior. I can't see any news on a wedding date as yet, but I have to say, he is a lucky guy!

one convenient thing about this site is that most changes to the collective sense of humor are announced via a series of viral posts in which our resident killjoys unceremoniously declare a joke to be "over" and "never funny in the first place", something they have usually been trying to do since the moment they caught wind of the latest festivities but generally don't succeed in until the novelty has worn off among our largest demographic: people who are terrified of being cringe.

at first glance this seems like an obvious recipe for toxicity, but fortunately we also have a healthy population of passionate Things Enjoyers balancing this out, and the hater to creator ratio has achieved a relatively stable state ever since the twitter exodus of 2017 shocked the platform into an ecosystem reset.

the real question is whether this balance is resilient enough to adjust for an influx of new users fleeing both twitter AND reddit in rapid succession. the lack of detrimental impact so far is certainly promising, but residents in particularly vulnerable parts of the site ('respectable' fandoms, discourse-prone mutual circles, people with strong feelings about taylor swift, etc.) are advised to take precautionary measures in the coming weeks
