The Devil Bat (1940)
Tumblr media
Sometimes, you dig through the films that have fallen into the public domain and find some gems. Most of the time, you find the likes of The Devil Bat.
Dr. Paul Carruthers (Lugosi) is beloved by the town of Heathville. Particularly by the Morton and Heath families, whom he’s made rich by developing several of the beauty products they sell. Bitter and resentful of their fortunes, Carruthers has devised an elaborate means of getting revenge. Using electricity, he’s enlarged an ordinary bat to enormous size and trained it to attack anyone wearing a new aftershave he’s developed. After several murders, reporter Johnny Layton (Dave O’Brien) and his sidekick photographer “One-Shot” McGuire (Donald Kerr) begin investigating.
If the plot sounds needlessly complicated and dumb, it's because it is. Carruthers’ plan has way too many phases. Step one: train ordinary bats to attack anyone wearing a very specific scent. Step two: use his SCIENCE! to enlarge one of these bats. Step three: convince his targets to try the aftershave he’s developed. Step four: release the animal from its cage. Hopefully, it rips his target's’ throat out. Meanwhile, he’s got to cross his fingers hoping the police don’t connect him and the victims’ death, a task that would be pretty hard considering he’s always the last person they talk to before getting shredded.
The plot is ludicrous and made more comical by several unintentional quirks in the direction and set design. To release the Devil Bat, Carruthers has to open a secret door in a bookcase which leads to a secret room. In this secret room, there’s a hidden door in the wall which leads to a staircase. At the top is another room whose entrance is hidden in a wall. That final room, by the way, has a window which opens to the outside. After the first murder, you figure the police will need some time to connect the victim to our villain but no! Since no one saw the bat attack the first Heath son, they assume a person attacked him despite 1) the killer getting away fast as lightning 2) the strange bite marks and scratches around the victim’s neck and shoulders 3) the “rat-like” hairs found on the man’s clothing 4) the animal-like shrieks heard as the man’s sister, Mary (Suzanne Kaaren) ran towards him. Imagine going through all these hoops and still becoming suspect #1.
Watching the characters slowly piece together what would be obvious to everyone watching even if the “twist” wasn’t revealed in the first scene is funny. I’ll give the special effects a break - the bats featured don’t look much better than the ones alongside Lugosi in 1931’s Dracula - but the dialogue is so wooden and clunky it feels like a first draft. The characters show no emotion whatsoever. Even after their loved ones are violently killed. I’ve seen stronger reactions from people who spilled a drink than from Mary after her brother is torn apart! Everyone’s a cartoon, with Lugosi faring the best out of everyone. I guess because at least his hamminess fits the part of a mad scientist obsessed with bats.
Classic horror-movie connoisseurs may find their interests peaked when they see Bela Lugosi’s name in the credits. If I had to pick, I’d say the horror icon is the best part of this movie but in this case, that doesn’t mean a whole lot. The Devil Bat only lasts 68 minutes, which is one of its strong suits. It may be worth a watch… if you want some laughs. (On DVD, March 18, 2020)

Hannah Waddingham in custom Suzanne Neville
Score: My final 10/10 of the night. Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular. 💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎
The illusion lace, the victoriana, the signature corsetry, the mermaid silhouette...it's everything. Hannah personally collaborated with Suzanne on this dress. That alone deserves a 10/10. An iconic British brand for an iconic British actress. Only the best for our queen 😌. She should work with Suzanne Neville forever.

The Mentor
The Mentor https://ift.tt/0Kl6xEn by targma At 17 years old, Hermione Granger is selected as the female Tribute of District 3, and soon she finds herself in a position in which she has to triumph over the brutal event that is the Hunger Games if she wishes to survive. Due to a lack of available mentors in her district, the Capitol’s tyrant government assigns the young, aspiring politician Draco Malfoy as her Mentor. As Hermione and Draco’s relationship extends beyond the boundaries of a mere tribute-mentor dynamic, questions start to linger: How far is Hermione willing to stray away from her humanity to win? To what depths is Draco willing to descend into the sinister politics of the Capitol, all to ensure Hermione's survival in the Arena?   A Dramione Hunger Games-AU. say we ban kate from wearing jenny packham's evening dress or gown ever again, what's the alternative other than alexander mcqueen? obviously it needs to be british brand and given kate's preference it need to be modest but also ✨glamorous ✨. imho brands like safiyaa or solace london have a very plain design iykwim so it's a bit meh 👎. sorry i don't know much about british brands, if she was part of france or italy royal household i'd just dress her with something from lvmh or kering lol
Needle & Thread gowns are gorgeous so those would be my go-to selections for Kate! They're sparkly, feminine, and look like a million bucks while costing way less. Most N&T gowns cost from $700-$1,200, which is roughly 1/3 to 1/5 of the cost of a single Jenny Packham gown!
I'm a big Philippa Lepley fan and cannot wait to see her upcoming eveningwear collection. Kate wore a blue Lepley gown on the Caribbean tour and though I don't think the color was the best on her, the style and fit were immaculate. Since everything Philippa Lepley makes is bespoke, there's no way to know the price (money obviously isn't a concern for Kate, but she's been very careful not to look like she's spending tons of money on her clothes, and custom items help obscure the overall value of her wardrobe).
Suzanne Neville's eveningwear collection has a lot of potential, too. Some of the dresses wouldn't suit Kate, but others would be perfect. Plus they have a lot of Kate's favorite eveningwear details: flowy fabrics, lace, strong colors.
Sassi Holford's off-the-rack eveningwear all looks the same, but her bridal line is big enough that I'm sure she could make a gorgeous custom piece for Kate.

✨Trivia time✨
Just for fun here are some fun facts about plotlines, both abandoned ones and ones that made it in
Plotlines that have always been in my head since Abbie popped into existence in my head 12 years ago
Abbie is Snape’s Gryffindor daughter in the same year as Harry who is friends with Draco
Snape doesn’t know about Abbie until she starts Hogwarts
Her name has always been Abbie/Abigail
She gets attacked by Lucius at the Department of Mysteries, though this was going to be for different reasons and in a slightly different way
Plotlines that were rotating in my head 12 years ago but never came to be because either they didn’t fit the story anymore or they were just stupid
Abbie’s mother was called Suzie/Suzanne and she was a one-night stand
Abbie had a muggle step-father
Suzie’s father was Tom Riddle, making Abbie a parselmouth
Suzie’s mother was also a one-night stand and Tom/Voldy didn’t know about her
This one’s a doozy: After Snape died, Abbie found the only way to save him was to go back in time. But she couldn’t go back in time but she did discover that time is cyclical so she became immortal and lived so long that the universe died and reformed around her. By the time she came back around again, she was trillions of years old and basically a god. But her memory was still human, so she could only remember a few hundred years at a time, meaning she’d forgotten all about her father and was doomed to live an eternal cycle, knowing there was something she was meant to do, some purpose to her immortality, but she’d forgotten it long ago. (Copyright me if I ever take this and turn it into some actual fantasy story)
Plotlines that I thought of while writing and/or initially intended to include before I started but they didn’t come to be
Abbie dies after saving Snape (might do an AU oneshot of this one day if I feel like breaking everyone’s hearts)
Abbie and Draco were going to be romantic until I realised she was gay
Sephy finds out she’s the product of Abraxas Malfoy’s affair with a muggle servant. Might also write an AU of this eventually. Canned because it felt too Eastenders-y + it would have made Abbie and Draco cousins (not that purebloods care about that) + I prefer Sephy coming from nowhere
Post war, James and Lily come back to life. Purely based on my desire to rub Sev and Sephy’s relationship in their faces, however I hate the Somehow Palpatine Returned trope and believe the moment death becomes impermanent in a story it loses all meaning (*stares hard at Supernatural and Moffat-era Doctor Who*) so in the bin it goes
I considered how far Abbie and Draco’s fake relationship was going to go and even considered them having to consummate and her getting pregnant but I decided not to go that far because I didn’t feel comfortable writing either Abbie or Draco in that position
Plotlines that weren’t my intention going in but happened because the story has a will of its own and I am but its teller
Abbie being gay
Abbie and Neville being besties
The arranged marriage
Snape and Sephy’s whole romance
Abbie and Snape’s kind of unhealthily codependent relationship. Originally he was going to be cold and distant like we see in earlier chapters for pretty much the entire time and he wasn’t going to admit he loved her until he was dying.
(Basically, I vastly underestimated Snape’s ability to love them)
Plotlines I regret/could have done better
Persephone and the dark magic book, I feel I should have done it better and built up to it more and had the consequences last longer
Teen Sev and Sephy by the lake, I should have just had them kissing or something. My horny mind made them shag but I should have kept their original virginity stories intact.

Dread by the Decade: The Devil Bat
👻 You can support me on Ko-Fi! ❤️
Tumblr media
Plot: A vindictive chemist creates giant bats to kill his enemies.
Review: Despite Lugosi's presence, this film is imbued with none of his charm. It's too silly to be taken seriously, yet too boring to laugh at.
Tumblr media
Year: 1940 Genre: Creature Feature, Sci-Fi Horror Country: United States Language: English Runtime: 1 hour 8 minutes
Tumblr media
Director: Jean Yarborough Writer: John Thomas Neville Cinematographer: Arthur Martinelli Editor: Holbrook N. Todd Composer: David Chudnow Cast: Bela Lugosi, Suzanne Kaaren, Dave O'Brien, Guy Usher, Yolande Mallot, Donald Kerr
Tumblr media
------
Story: 1/5 - A terrible combination of stupid, repetitive, and dull. Any camp is negated by stock characters and empty filler.
Performances: 2/5 - Lugosi is sometimes fun to watch in a campy (and weirdly sweaty) way, but everyone else is fairly one-note.
Cinematography: 2.5/5 - Serviceable enough.
Tumblr media
Editing: 2/5
Music: 2/5
Effects & Props: 1/5 - Hilariously bad. There's a stuffed bat that swings from a string and screams like R2-D2.
Sets: 3/5 - Most of the sets are generic, but the doctor's lab at least has some personality and dressing.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 3.5/5 - Just normal clothing, but of good quality.
youtube
Trigger Warnings:
Mild violence
Animal death
Casual racism (brief, dialogue-only)
