REPOSTOBER DAY 1
Truly old art that I don't think I've actually uploaded to the internet until today. I did stuff like this before I really branched out into creature design. Extinct creatures were so fascinating to me, but I especially drew bugs, fish, non-avian reptiles, and birds when I was younger.
I used to spend a lot of time drawing from the science and nature books we had in the classroom, and this was no exception. I didn't always do a background and so many subjects on one page.
I hope this is a fun take on this October challenge, we'll get to the more current stuff at the end of the month!

Ammonites were some of the most diverse organisms in the ancient ocean. The Museum holds one of the world’s largest collections of ammonites, containing nearly two million specimens that represent 300 million years of Earth’s history!

500-Million-Year-Old ‘Alien Fish Taco’ Was among First Creatures with Jaws
A bizarre fossil of a Cambrian creature that looked like an “alien fish taco” reveals how a single group with jaws came to account for around 90 percent of all animal species on Earth
Around 500 million years ago a strange creature with bulging eyes, a rudderlike tail and 30 pairs of spiny limbs extending from its cigar-sized body swam through Earth’s seas. Most of its legs couldn’t touch the ocean floor because they were tucked inside a protective shell that wrapped almost entirely around its midsection. And like a tiny King Neptune, it wielded a mysterious trident-shaped tooth between external jawlike structures in front of its mouth. Though it looked more like an alien fish taco, it was an arthropod called Odaraia alata. The creature, spanning about 20 centimeters long, likely met its end very suddenly, buried underneath a thick layer of sediment. But the circumstances that spelled the animal’s doom also immortalized it in the fossil record...

Megalodons were likely warm-blooded, despite being stone-cold killers
This evolutionary advantage may have also contributed to their eventual demise.
Most fish are cold-blooded, which means that they rely on the temperature outside of their body to regulate their internal temperatures. However, some sharks are surprisingly warm-blooded, storing the heat that is generated by their muscles the way many mammals do. A study published June 26 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences finds that their evolutionary ancestors—the mighty megalodon—also share this endothermic nature. The amount of energy that the meg used to stay warm may have contributed to its extinction roughly 3.6 million years ago, and could help scientists study the impacts of future environmental changes...

Squart here bringing you the goods from the Twilight Zone. Things are starting to get freaky where the sunlight doesn't reach.
-Coelacanths were thought to be extinct for a while, but scientists found living specimens chilling in the deep, relatively physically unchanged from 400 million years ago.
-Cuttlefish have a unique bone in their body to control buoyancy called the cuttle bone.
-Goblin shark jaws can shoot out to catch their prey.
-The telescope fish can reach about 20 cm in length, thankfully not more. Can you imagine a 6 foot beast with that face swimming after you?

sometimes i doubt myself as a nonhuman but then i imagine myself running and i automatically picture my paws, all four hitting the ground rhythmically. When i imagine myself swimming i picture a great tail beating against the water or claws grabbing onto rocks. When i picture freedom i can feel myself flying among the clouds and stars, reality at my very fingertips.
I know this new experience and body can still be wonderful, i choose to experience this life for a reason, but it’s impossible to deny it is not my true form. I know I hold so much more power, and it brings me great comfort in this life to believe i will get back to it again.

It’s Trilobite Tuesday! Over the last three decades, Morocco has become an epicenter for trilobite discoveries, with hundreds of new species emerging from dozens of active quarry sites. Some of these specimens have been remarkable in their morphological complexity while others, like this crimson-toned Harpid, are notable for their unexpected color. Environmental factors, including the presence of specific minerals, can change the color of fossils to striking hues like this one.

Star feathers are unique, they have high resemblance to pre-historic aquatic fauna; plants. Just like horseshoe crabs, their existence as a subset of species dates back to millenniums.
These are mobile versions of crinoids, that's a member of animalia (animal organisms), their original predecessors that came first --- the prehistoric plant-versions of crinoids that were rooted in the sea's sand as shown in the bottom figure were also animalia, but have differences in mobility. The rooted plant crinoids are among the oldest prehistoric members of lifeforms that dates back to even before the Cambrian explosion period. Fossils of crinoids are often seen in fossil marketplaces, alongside fake's, but these more recent versions of crinoids which have genetically adapted through evolution to thrive and live outside of the sand and actually swim amongst other fish, it was a characteristic often seen in the ocean's habitat.
