Many women report experiencing postpartum depression and anxiety, but these symptoms are transient and relatively mild for most. However, 10-15% of women experience mood disturbances such as Postpartum Depression (PPD) (1) and Postpartum Anxiety (PPD-A).

I'm a terrible mother. That thought and others berated me almost every waking hour. It was not true. In fact I can say that I am proud of the mother I was then and I am now. Postpartum Depression can sneak in when you least expect it and mix with the hormone crash after birth. How one comedian’s battle with postpartum depression turned laughs into legislation
Los Angeles-based comedian Angelina Spicer is not only using her experience with postpartum depression to make audiences laugh, but also to create a fundamental change in how the illness is perceived in society.
“I didn’t even know that black women could get postpartum depression,” Spicer said. “Number one as a black woman, you’re not socially given the permission to just stop and cry.  Like we want to do that so badly.”
It was when she couldn’t be funny anymore that Spicer said she knew something was wrong.
Ten percent of U.S. women are at risk for postpartum depression – and some studies suggest the rate triples in women of color.
“Researchers from all over the country are trying to understand why women of color are at higher risk,” Dr. Eynav Accortt, Ph.D in Clinical Psychology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said.
“Psychologically, women of color are raised with this narrative of being a strong black woman, which is a wonderful and powerful narrative,” Dr. Accortt said. “However, when one is feeling weak, when one is feeling depressed, when one is feeling anxious they need to feel comfortable to seek out professional help.”
“The mentality of, you know, we take care of everybody else and I’ll get to me last is totally a strong black women feature,” added Spicer.
Biological and psychological perspectives
Some researchers believe that there is a biological reason why African-American woman can be more prone to postpartum depression. From a biological perspective, women of color have a higher risk of inflammation and Vitamin D deficiencies, both of those combined can leave an individual with a higher risk of depression.
Biology is important, but social stigmas also get in the way of properly diagnosing PDD, but that is changing. “We just need to reduce stigma so people don’t feel badly about asking for help,” Spicer said.
“From a social perspective, it’s really important that we are aware that discrimination and stereotypes exist,” added Dr. Accortt. “We need to be aware as providers that some of those assumptions and some of those stereotypes that we are all making may get in the way of providing the very best care that we can for our patients.”
Spicer feels fortunate that she was able to get the help she needed.
“I hear about women who have either hurt their babies and hurt themselves or run away or who are locked up,” Spicer said. “And I think to myself, ‘Wow, I made it. I made it.’ And it’s just something that I just do not take for granted.”
Comedy as an ally
“As a comedian, my truth is my gateway to the funny,” Spicer said.
Angelina’s honesty in her jokes during pregnancy and the battle with postpartum depression after her daughter was born is helping to break down the social stigma while making the audience laugh.
Jerry Corely, owner of the Comedy Clinic in Los Angeles has a simple philosophic attitude as to why pain can be funny. “If you take your pain and your flaw and you speak of them and you receive laughter as a result, they are no longer your flaws, they are your power,” he said.
Spicer was able to evolve her struggle with postpartum depression and make it her power and took it up with lawmakers.
“I’m what you call an ‘accidental activist,’ I never intended on lobbying on nobody’s Capitol Hill,” Spicer said.
Yet, Spicer found herself in that very spot and had three bills approved by Governor Jerry Brown.

“The year 2020 we are talking major change,” said Spicer about the three bills, which require mandatory screening, training for medical staff to administer those screenings and federal funding to implement a referral system.
Through anxiety and pain, Spicer was able to take postpartum depression and find the strength to not only survive, but help other women who will face the same struggle.
“My advice to those moms or those women out there who don’t have a dime or don’t have the resources that I was blessed to have – we gotta get in front of this, we have to prevent it,” she said. “Give information, reduce stigma so that people don’t feel afraid to ask for help and that their needs are met with help. We need to be able to look into our family’s eyes and say ‘I need help’ and have our family be there to meet us where we are.”
Using comedy to find her power, Spicer found allies through her audience and government.
“I had it and I made it,” she said. ” You know I feel like we can all be an ally to each other if we’re just transparent and open and honest about it.”
Spicer is currently raising funds for a feature-length documentary

I have this #mantra I tell myself more often than I think. #YouAreInChargeOfYourHappiness no one owes you shit. And you definitely can’t find happiness in filling a void. You can’t seek happiness in someone and hoping they will fulfill the need that we desire. It’s not their job. The people in your life can only love you the best way they know how and if for whatever reason you are not feeling #love the way that you desire why are you choosing to suffer? . . . You can’t find what you’re looking for, when you are looking for change. Change isn’t in the future. Change is now. You must embrace the change within and take the necessary steps to control your narrative and no longer rely on others to stand beside you along the way. . . . If you don’t want to repeat the same tired mistakes than you change your environment. What good are you if you’re unhappy? The future turns out to be something you make instead of find. . . . #StoryTime I’ve been going thru a series of challenges since this year have started. I find myself taking it out on my significant other because I swear his life is so Unbothered. I simply couldn’t stand that he was just living his life while I was filled with so much stress and agony, yet he has a normal routine and to me he just seems so unaffected because his life hasn’t been impacted or as severe as mine. Because his life runs like clockwork because I’m the motherfucker making it tick. I realize I’ve been taking a lot of my anger and unhappiness within myself on him because he isn’t easily troubled as me. In fact I always have an issue lol. So most recently I made some necessary changes to really get me back on track. It’s a new week, and free day before the new month. This picture was taken on #May3rd My husband dragged me out the house because he knew I needed it after a confirmed phone call and it’s crazy how the universe works because just the day before I posted about #MentalHealthAwareness month.. I was excited to share with you all the content I had plan for everyday of the month of May and how important #MentalHealth is and why we need to #BreakTheStigmaOfMentalIllness but on this day about 2hours earlier I receive some terrible news that Im honestly still completely shocked. I had to start all over. I had to focus on my own mental health. I can share with you all I was damn near falling apart. . . They always say that you cant help others if you can’t help yourself. I partially agree because the Thing is I have drugged myself out of number 3 #Depression hole plenty of time, my #PpD hell I’m a #PpdSurvivor all the #Trauma I’ve endure being a #SingleMom but I would advise against going that route. Doing this alone is hard and you’ll find yourself in it deeper and longer and harder to get out of. If you can find support go out and get it! . . This go around I have my husband and a few of my best friends who check on me daily to make sure I’m ok, by having our normal everyday conversation. I appreciate them soooo much. This coming Sunday would mark 4 weeks of the #heartbreaking news I receive. And in all fairness I’m still healing from this.. but who’s to say I can’t help others while I’m still healing from my own hurt. We can all help one another. . . On May 3rd I received a call from my sister that our father passed away from a sudden #HeartAttack I felt completely helpless as I’m 3k miles away. And for those who knows me know the special bond I have with my father. I’m still #grieving I’m still #Hurting and I’m still #Indenial nothing can prepare you for losing a love one this close #MyFirstLove #LosingMyDad If you have ever lost a parent you were very close with I would love to hear how you cope with this heartbreaking loss. . . #Grief #GriefSupport #GriefJourney #GrievingDaughter #LosingSomeone #CopingWithGrief #Anger #Sadness #5StagesOfGrief #Covid19 (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAtdaFxgQny/?igshid=1pua8bmm92emj

Did you know Approximately one in five adults in the United States, 43.8 million, or 18.5%, experiences a mental illness in a given year and approximately one in five youth aged 13–18 (21.4%) experiences a severe mental health disorder at some point during their lifetime. For children aged 8–15, the estimate is 13%. Mental illness is not prejudiced; as mental health disorders affect men and women of all ages, races and social classes. Since 1949, the month of May has been observed as Mental Health Month in the United States and many national organizations such as NAMI, MentalHealthAmerica, and other affiliates spotlight Mental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and to stop the stigma associated with mental health disorders. The theme for this year’s Mental Health Month is Fitness #4Mind4Body, meaning that health is an all-encompassing matter and we must take care of our minds just as much as we take care of our bodies. #Mentalhealth is important for our physical health and vice versa. A well-balanced diet, a healthy sleep schedule, exercise, gut health, and hydration all affect our mental health and our physical health equally. Studies have shown that individuals who have chronic medical illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure or autoimmune disorders have a higher likelihood of being diagnosed with a mental health disorder such as #depression or #anxiety. Our bodies and mind act as one unit and therefore it is important to care for both our emotional and mental states as well as our physical health. . . . Earlier this year I finally got to really dress up for the 2nd time and boy was I excited to wear this outfit I bought over a year ago.. My beautiful friend @cocokittybeauty invited me to join her to this private intimate women’s dinner hosted by @lauramdifrancesco at her beautiful wonderful establishment she and her sister built in West Chester called @flourishwestchester a co-working space and community for those looking to grow, build, motivate, inspire, and empower one another In their line of work. . . It was a small group of us which was just the perfect amount of people, we laughed, we shared, we learned so much more about one another and we did all of this over some good vegan food. With such a short period of time we got so comfortable with one another that we even shared some very intimate experience. Most importantly we got to share our businesses, our endeavors, our passion and doing this is in such an authentic vulnerable way. . . I hope to cross path with these amazing women one day, hopefully sooner than later. I’m finally live! Yes after months of trying to make it perfect, designing logos, expanding the site, building links, adding my #podcast, then building my podcast website, hated the logo 23x and changing that again! And then having to relearn how to change it on the website again, digging in archives of my professional pictures, and just the #Blogging alone! Sheesh this #website shit was no joke. And finally making it #relatable for the #Singles, the #mamas, the #married, the married #Singlemamas, the single mamas who married, and the #wasmarried. Www.Singlemamamarried.com is finally up and running to what I want it to look like. . There is always room for opportunity and growth as I continue to evolve and while attempting to make it perfect I realized that it isn’t. 😒 And I know longer care if I don’t have all my T’s cross, hell I write in cursive anyways 🤷🏽‍♀️ so this is it. 🤪 Either way it’s live now! #MommyBlogger #SAHM #WAHM #Marriage #SingleLife #MomGoals #PhillyWellness #PhillyBlogger #Blogger #LABlogger #Ppd #PpdSurvivor #Postpartum #PostpartumJourney #NewMom #MentalHealthawareness #NewPodcast #WomensPodcast #WomenSupportingWomen #HealthAndWellness #TravelingPodcast (at Old City, Philadelphia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B823JJAAyAP/?igshid=svjkokuowo02
