Mystic slumped back against the peeling wallpaper of the rundown motel. The old chair moaned as he rocked back and forward on it. He watched the small flame on the single candle quiver atop the one-person portion pastry set on its plastic tray. His mismatched eyes glimmered in its light, making the blood splatters upon his face all the more noticeable. He had arrived so utterly exhausted, the thought of cleaning himself up hadn’t even occur to him.

A tear of wax fell along the side of the candle, then another. The grandfather clock out on the hall struck midnight. The walls thumped with a disgruntled guest on the other room.

Mystic leaned forward and blew out the flame; smoke trailed up towards the ceiling in ghostly tendrils.

The Founder sighed, a very subtle smile tugged at the edge of his lips. “Happy birthday to me…”

           Klee got to run around aaaall day and play with Diona under Kaeya's watch, got to make monsters and bad guys go BOOM, and she didn't get in trouble for anything either! Not to mention Jean, Kaeya, Miss Lisa, Albedo, even the weird grownup ( Mr. Diluc, Kaeya had told her while coughing strangely into his hand after the guy had given him a funny look; like the ones Jean gave Kaeya sometimes when he made jokes during a talking to about blast-fishing ) gave her so many good wishes and presents. She even got some presents sent from far away! From her mama, no less!

           But now–

           "Ah???" –now, Klee's expression brightened with excitement, as Boothill knelt before her, like a real knight! A cowboy-knight bringing tri-bute to his person! But what did he have for her? What did he have???

           Even with her curiosity, she managed to keep her coo. Like a cu-cumber, the way Boothill's funny saying went. So very calm, because Kaeya told her to always be polite when getting her gifts. And he was watching so closely now too, so she kept veeery patient. As patient as she could be, bouncing on the balls of her feet in eager anticipation, until-

           "Waaaa~!" Her eyes grew wide as saucers as the little cry in surprise left her. Almost immediately after, she made a mad dash forward, scooping up the plushie with a louder squeal, raising it up and spinning. "It's a horsie! You got Klee a horsie!"

           "Aha...Klee? Aren't you forgetting something?"

           She stopped then gave a loud gasp, turned back to Boothill, bouncing a little in place before rushing right at him and leaping at the man to tackle him right into a hug. The biggest, tightest hug she could ever give! Because he deserved it! Because,

           "Klee's very happy! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Klee loves him!"

           She pulled back, hugging the plush tight in one arm as her eyes shined with utter glee in throwing the other out wide.

           "Happy Birthday, Papa!"

Honestly, my twin and I are kinda hurt that Tobin (our dad) didn't text or call us to tell us happy birthday.

Nothin all day.

Reminds me when he went to a water park with our brother when I lived literally 30 minutes away from it and he didn't even call to invite me.

We use to go to the same water park for our birthday every year, but stopped a few years ago. It's not that I didn't want to go (I did, actually, it was fuckin HOT that day), I just wanted to see him after a few months of not seein each other when I moved away.

He did call to say happy birthday that day, but it still made me upset he didn't bother to invite me to have fun with him and my brother.

Even his girlfriend thought that was rude as fuck to do.

My twin was PISSED OFF when they found out what he did and chewed him out for it and that's when he called to tell me happy birthday and that he was sorry he didn't invite me.

I'm like Ciel Phantomhive from Black Butler when it comes to my birthday. I never cared for it.

The word count is still under 9k, but I did write an Akutagawa sibling banter scene yesterday, and a couple days ago I finally had a breakthrough and did allllll of this planning for where this chapter is going. Basically, it's going a lot better now and I'll be doing writing sprints for a couple of weeks 🫡

Thank you for your super kind words of encouragement, and thanks to everyone who left comments and DM'd me and sent anon messages about this fic. I wasn't sure I was gonna finish it at all, but everyone loving it made me want to keep pushing and I appreciate the support so much ♥️
