We will visit the Mark Twain Grave site and the Underground Railroad monument for a group photo. From there it is a short walk to Simeon Benjamin's gravesite. Sarah Tompkins is on the other side of the cemetery. We will walk to the Celtic Cross that is next to Sarah's grave. After that, you are free to explore the cemetery to find some of the grave sites of the abolitionists. Notice other tombstones. We will be surrounded by text! The cemetery offers many natural textures as well as manmade objects. Use the "eye" you are developing in this class to notice colors, shapes, textures, as well as historical or natural subject matter.Field Trip to Woodlawn Cemetery

The auspicious month of Ramadan is a time for reflection, contemplation, and celebration. To help you prepare for a blessed month this Ramadan, we have provided the key dates to be aware of below.
When is Ramadan 2023?
The Islamic calendar follows the phases of the moon, commonly known as the lunar cycle. As a result, the Holy month of Ramadan falls approximately 10 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar. The Ramadan start date for 2023 is expected to begin on Wednesday 22 March, following the sighting of the moon over Mecca. Lasting for 30 days, Ramadan will end on Friday 21 April, with the celebratory days of Eid al-Fitr starting on Saturday 22 April or Sunday 23 April.
“Qur'an15th centuryArtist/maker unknown, Indian
The Qur’an is Islam’s most sacred text. It gives the words that God (Allah) transmitted in Arabic to the Prophet Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel (Jibril) in the mid-600s. Muhammad delivered these revelations to his followers who later wrote them into a book. The teachings cover many subjects, from creation and final judgment to prayer and ritual to law and social behavior.Made for a Muslim ruler in or near Delhi, this copy is one of the oldest surviving Qur’ans from India. The scribe used a distinctive script called Bihari with letters ending in long, swooping lines. The colorful illuminations that punctuate its pages blend ornament from across the Muslim world, including Indian touches such as lotus flowers.“

The True Artist Helps the World by Revealing Mystic Truths (Window or Wall Sign)
1967Bruce Nauman (American, born 1941)
The True Artist Helps the World by Revealing Mystic Truths (Window or Wall Sign), one of Nauman’s first neons, is a founding work in his career. Hijacking a medium generally associated with the tawdry (cheap motels, shop windows, and bars), Nauman's sign advertises a metaphysical and deeply personal message as if it were for sale. Throughout his long and illustrious career, Nauman has examined the role and responsibilities of the artist. The title statement of this poetic spiral is neither entirely facetious nor completely serious, and the contradictions embodied in the piece yield an ambiguity that is both playful and profound.
