One of the biggest awakenings I’ve ever had is one in sixth grade. There was this certain drink trending on TikTok back then (I don’t have TikTok but I know it was), and everyone was talking about it constantly. It was hard to get a hold of it where I live, and if you actually managed to find it, it cost about 12 € (that’s a lot for a bottle of that drink).
Everyone was supposed to taste it and collect the bottles. I didn’t taste it, not once.
Because one thing I’ve always genuinely struggled to understand is trends. Like, what the fuck are they even good for? I see people my age lose more and more of their capacity to think for themselves every day, because they follow trends blindly. They dress like everyone else, talk and act like everyone else, download the same apps and try out the same challenges… and it’s weird for me to see. Maybe it has to do with one or more of my diagnoses, or maybe this is just who I am, but I can’t for the life of me understand why fitting in and being popular is so important to some people.
Anyways, back to the story. When I was younger back in sixth grade, I didn’t know better than to ask people about this. I approached one of the meanest girls in my class, a girl who hated my guts for some reason. And I was like “why are you all obsessed with this drink? I’ve seen how much it costs! And I’ve heard it tastes so bad.” And she said “Yeah, it tastes awful”, and I was confused and asked “but why are you collecting the bottles and pouring out the drink then???”.
The conversation quickly escalated, and I could see that she was getting angrier by the second. I don’t remember exactly what my last question was, but I saw the change I made. I saw confusion in her eyes, and she looked like she had never thought of things this way before, which shocked me. She looked like she was questioning literally everything she knew… and then she just rolled her eyes and played it off by saying (in the brattiest, most dramatic voice known to man): “You wouldn’t understand.” And with that, the conversation was over.
That was the only answer I got from her, from anyone, and since then I’ve never started a discussion like this ever again. Because that day, I walked away from the conversation with a feeling of “Oh. Oh.”.
And I realised, maybe I’m not stupid for not understanding social norms and rules… maybe I’m not stupid for simply not getting the whole idea of trends. Because, based on what I saw in this girl’s eyes that day, I have a pretty strong feeling that I’m not alone. I think that those people, the popular and “cool” ones, aren’t even sure of what they’re doing themselves. When I introduced this girl to the idea that trends are stupid and meaningless, the thought of it scared her, literally frightened her. Because some people don’t seem to be smart enough to ever question anything themselves. They just follow the stream, do like everyone else because that’s all they know.
And you know what? I pity them. I really do.

popular people make me anxious to be around but popular girls are so fucking terrifying because even though they’re nice to you, they’re definitely not sweet
like the other day i was in pe, where i have two popular friends—clarissa (@angelliicc you already KNOWW what’s about to come) and rose. they’re both super nice but def have sides to them yk? anyway, we saw this other kid who’s short and “weird”, and he was trying to play basketball. the way he shot the basketball was kinda funny ig? but he was just trying his best. and then fucking clarissa and rose started like laughing, not making fun of him, but they were just laughing and idk, something about that is just so off and so wrong.
that’s why popular girls are trouble !!
thanks for listening to my ted talk

To the high-school-age guys feeling discouraged because they "aren't attractive enough" to get a girl...
JUST YOU WAIT
After high school, many girls' standards and preferences change dramatically! The popular blond worship team dream girl at my church, who once idolized Harry Styles, settled down with a guy who looks like a seasoned ex-convict. The high school cheerleader who rejected every guy who wasn't the stereotypical star quarterback ended up with a flannel-loving "dad bod" type guy. My church's ballet princess queen bee married a scrawny man going bald at 35. The flirty theater girl doubled her weight and got engaged to a man who looks like sasquatch. The girl who was obsessed with Channing Tatum married a geek. I could go on and on with stories of girls I've known settling down with guys who looked nothing like their highschool celebrity crushes.
Post-highschool, many girls subconsciously switch to prioritizing money and personality over magazine cover looks. Be patient until then and in the meantime, start laying the foundation for a future where you have unmatched emotional maturity and can provide financial stability.

Don't waste your time and energy, now, on immature girls with shallow, fickle interests.

not caring too much about a fandom’s favourite guy is the worst. you’ll think “oh i’ll look into the tag see if anything new and cool’s there” and it’s just that fucking guy again

“I feel like I complain too much about being unnoticed on here. Too bad every day is a constant reminder that very few people in the school remember I exist unless I am screaming at them.”
“Today, these two airheaded popular girls were like “oh, you should meet our soccer coach. She’d love you.”
“DUH! IT’S ME! I AM THE SOCCER COACH!”
“This running gag has run into the ground. Do I have to dye my hair and wear fishnet leggings again or what!?”

It's hard to think of a better feeling than being one of the few people included in on the popular girls story on what she's thankful for
