It's not so much that they wanted to help, as it is how they went about it. The only ones with, arguably, selfless intentions, that genuinely had Nesta's best interests at heart, were her sisters. Even then, the IC's, namely Rhysand's, personal issues with her tainted it just a bit.
There's also the issue of us having little to no clue what Nesta and the IC were doing for the past, like, year? This has more to do with the writing, I think, as it goes against one of the biggest rules in writing, 'show don't tell'.
Putting aside the atrocity that was their intervention, the whole idea of putting her in the HOW, sequestered away from society, with no way to come or go of her own volition, is a very extreme measure. But her condition doesn't imply that such a measure is necessary. Are her coping mechanisms unhealthy at best? Yes. But she hasn't sown any signs of being addicted, or even overly dependant. If she was, there'd be withdrawal symptoms, and going cold turkey, especially with substances like alcohol, is very dangerous. She would've been in no condition to train or work, had that been the case. She also would've needed to be under the care of a healer, or medical professional of some kind. But she wasn't. Again, this could have more to do with the writing, but looking at plot only, it was severely mishandled.
Leaving her to handle it alone, and spiral, for like a year or so feels like an extreme measure to take. However, locking her in the HOW is an even more extreme measure, so I wonder where and when they used... Normal methods?
And even if it was bad enough that she was unfit to be in society, she should've been handled by a medical professional. Or at the very least the councillor that they mentioned having, but Nesta never saw for some reason. Instead, we have one guy who only ever validates the worst things she's ever felt about herself, and the other who finds amusement when asking if the first guy pushed her down the stairs.
By the end of the book, her whole character arch leads to her realising that she needs to earn the love of her sister, mate and father, all of which is incredibly concerning.
The entire thing was poorly thought out at best, and incredibly abusive at worst.
@casualbuttercupblog Nobody (or at least nobody that I've seen) is arguing that they should've let her be for another year, but outcome of that would've been just as bad as the outcome of ACOSF was. In different ways, perhaps, but still just as bad.
I think this covers a few of the broader strokes of my issues with it, but I'm happy to have a bit more of a conversation about it, if you want.
Will never understand the people who clain the Inner Circle should have just let Nesta keep spiraling instead of helping her. Because "it's mean to put her on house arrest." But you know. The first 14 months of leaving her to spiral worked. I'm sure another 14 would've been GREAT for her.

Suddenly, the reasoning behind Nesta's sudden institutionalisation, and forced training, after waiting over a year to help her, makes perfect sense. No, it's not because Feyre sobbed into her eggs one morning or because they care about helping her.
It's because of the trove.
rainkatzanddogs on tiktok, put together a timeline for the SJM universe, and for each events, references which chapter (including bonus content) they take place in. I'll be referencing that in this post.
Feyre learned about Nesta's 500 gold marks spending spree one day before the start of ACOSF, right before Rhysand explains his plan. The one that Cassian believed he'd made a while back, given how detailed it was. The next day is when the intervention happens, and after that, Rhysand asks Cassian to look into the Human queens.
If he's asking Cassian to look into it at this point, then we can assume that he has reasonable evidence to suggest that they're doing something shady. By this point, according to the timeline, Baron has already made a deal with them, Eris' soldiers are under the Crowns control, and have been for a month. Meaning Briallyn has had the crown for longer than a month.
16 days after the start of ACOSF, they have the meeting where they use Elain to manipulate Nesta into searching for the trove.
I think it's reasonable to assume that the IC had some idea about the trove, and if not that specifically, than that magical items were being used by a death god and a cauldron made queen to control people. It would be naive to think they were completely ignorant of what was going on. Even by the time that first meeting takes place, they clearly have a decent level of knowledge on the trove, how to find it, and who's currently looking for it.
It isn't unreasonable to think that Rhys had some idea that they'd need Nesta to scry for them or to help them later on. So, he devised a plan where she trains, and works in the library so she'd be ready to help them when they need it.
She'd be prepped for missions due to her training.
She'd have ample time to research and study while in the library, even if she only shelves books, she'd know where to find the ones she needed to research whatever they asked of her,
And since her life would be in their hands, they could make her do anything without her arguing that she's a free citizen, because at this point, she isn't.
They used the guise of it being healing as a way to pitch the idea to Feyre and Elain, even though neither of them seemed to have an issue manipulating her into doing what they wanted, since they likely discussed the using Elain to convince her to scry, because Elain didn't seem to surprised when they didn't ask her to do it later, nor did she seem bothered when Nesta ended up doing it anyway. Hell, she literally came in to say she'd do it, got under Nesta's skin, and left without listening and/or contributing to the conversation anymore than that.
Cassian seemed hell bent on making her into a warrior from the moment they met, despite her wishes, and since he so blatantly doesn't care for her or her autonomy at all, he's obviously in, so he can get what he wants. A mate that's a warrior and his emotional punching bag to take out his insecurities on, but also has her own insecurities and traumas, so she'd never go against him and he could continue to flirt with Mor and (let's be real) Rhys without worrying about said mate having the strength to stand up to him.
It was never about helping Nesta, it was all a rouse to make her into a tool that was useful to them, with little risk. If she dies, she's no longer a problem for them, or anything to fear. If she lives, she's either contained forever, or heals into the perfect tool for them to use whenever they want. It's a win-win for Rhys and Cassian.

it always kills me that nesta who was already a victim of sexual assault got assaulted AGAIN while doing missions on behalf of the inner circle and she just kept. going. she kept doing things for them! she’s so much more self sacrificing than anyone in the fandom is willing to give her credit for!

Nesta is a thousand times better than me, babes.
If that's how you wanna play, I'll also ignore Morrigan, and my sister every time either of them opens their mouth, openly badmouth Rhys and make them bargain with me every time they needed me to lift a finger for them.
Also, to your point, @jon-snows-man-bun , I swear, if I'd gotten that reaction for saving his brother's life, next time, I would keep that funny feeling to myself and let them all die. She's better off without Cassian anyway 🤷‍♀️
why is this the first thought feyre has after rhys tells her about how mor's parents tortured her? what does any of that have to do with nesta? surely she's not implying that nesta being mean is in any way comparable to what keir did. right?

Why Feyre as High Lady Could Lead to the Night Court's Downfall (Or, How to Ruin a Court in 10 Easy Steps) comming from someone who is planning to study international relations and whos whole family is quite familiar with it:
Look, we all love Feyre. She's fierce, she's brave, and she can paint a mean flower. But let's be real: as High Lady of the Night Court, she's a Fucking diplomatic nightmare. If there were an award for "How to Piss Off Every High Lord and Their Neighboring Courts," she'd win it. Twice. Here's why Feyre's reign might just bring the Night Court crashing down faster than rhys can growl or cum to the image of his child
1. Explosive Temper and Poor Diplomacy Let’s talk about the High Lords meeting in A Court of Wings and Ruin. Remember that? Feyre’s blow-up at Beron wasn’t just a passionate defense—it was a major diplomatic fuck-up. Yes, Beron was being a total asshole, but diplomacy often means biting your tongue and playing the long game. Feyre's outburst could have easily cost them an alliance with the Autumn Court, potentially turning Beron into an outright enemy. With Hybern on the horizon, losing any potential allies could have been catastrophic. Instead of keeping things cool and trying to find common ground, she let her temper flare, risking everything Rhysand had worked for to keep the courts united. Feyre basically threw a damn match onto a pile of political dynamite.
2. Alienating Potential Allies Ah, the Summer Court fiasco. Remember when Feyre decided it was a good idea to steal from Tarquin? Not just any theft, but a "Hey, let's be friends—JK, I’m taking your most powerful magical artifact" kind of theft. Brilliant move. And then she had the nerve to act all shocked when Tarquin was pissed about it. "What do you mean you're mad I stole from you? We're supposed to be allies!" Gee, I wonder why Tarquin wasn’t thrilled about that little betrayal. It's like borrowing your friend's car and returning it on empty, with a dent in the side. And by "borrow," I mean grand theft auto. Feyre, maybe try not to screw over potential allies next time? Just a thought.
3. Emotional Decision-Making Feyre often lets her emotions drive her decisions. While being passionate isn't inherently bad, it becomes a problem when it overrides logic and strategy, especially in the high-stakes world of Prythian politics. The High Lords meeting is one instance, but it happens repeatedly. Her open hostility toward Tamlin, even if understandable on a personal level, didn't help the broader cause. By pushing him further away instead of seeking some form of truce, she risked driving him into Hybern's arms. A High Lady needs to think beyond personal grudges to what’s best for her people and her court, and Feyre struggles with that balance. You can't just say "screw it" and go off on people when the fate of your entire court is on the line.
4. Ignoring the Complexity of the Night Court And let's not forget the Night Court's lovely little secret: Hewn City. You know, that underground hellhole they basically keep under lock and key. Rhysand and Feyre are all "Oh, look at Velaris, it's so pretty and free!" Meanwhile, half their court is rotting in a glorified dungeon. And what's Feyre's big idea for dealing with Hewn City? Oh, right, pretend it doesn't exist. Smart. Because ignoring a potential uprising within your own court is definitely the way to keep things stable. It's like the French Revolution all over again—if the Night Court were France, then Feyre's approach is like Louis XVI ignoring the starving peasants while hosting extravagant parties. Eventually, ignoring the discontent and keeping people oppressed leads to revolution. Treating Hewn City like an inconvenient problem rather than addressing it is a recipe for disaster.
5. Undermining Rhysand’s Diplomacy Rhysand spent centuries mastering diplomacy—playing the long game, keeping everyone in check. And then comes Feyre, storming in like, "Oh, you spent centuries building these delicate alliances? Well, watch me fuck it up in five minutes." She's like that one friend who always says, "Hold my beer," right before doing something incredibly stupid. Rhys is trying to keep the court from crumbling, and Feyre's out there acting like diplomacy means "scream at the enemy until they go away." Newsflash: That’s not how this works. This isn't some street brawl where whoever yells the loudest wins. It's politics. You know, the art of not making enemies out of every living soul around you?
Conclusion Feyre's got the passion, the guts, and the fighting spirit of a warrior. But when it comes to actually leading a court? She’s like a bull in a china shop, if that bull also happened to have a grudge against every piece of porcelain in the room. Being High Lady isn’t about who's right in the heat of the moment; it's about playing the long game, keeping your people safe, and not, you know, burning bridges with every other court. If she keeps going down this path—alienating allies, ignoring the needs of half her own court, and letting emotions drive her decisions—the Night Court is in serious trouble. Feyre needs to understand that diplomacy isn’t about who can throw the best tantrum. It’s about avoiding a revolution and ensuring the stability of your people. Otherwise, the Night Court might fall not because of an external threat, but because its own leader is too busy screwing things up from the inside.

SJM reeks of money. she cannot write a poor family to save her life. the cabin years writing was so minimal and hollow and caricature-esque and filled with gaping plot holes
the closest you Get to any kind of poverty trauma with Feyre is her feeling bad about spending money. there are so, so many factors to consider when it comes to poverty besides just morality over spending money or not
hoarding money
binging and purging money
how you eat
what you eat
what you wear
how you protect what you already have
bitterness and Jealousy with ppl who do have money
being poor and feeling worse when you cannot help someone else who is also poor and struggling (like panhandling)
etc
if I was Feyre I'd be mortified if I had five houses. I'd be embarrassed to live in a giant house (let alone FIVE) while Cassian has to hand out BLANKETS in Illyria. I'd be judging the IC for how they spend the money (which isn't even theirs. "Rhys money" is all blood money and from taxes BE real) and then condemn Nesta for blowing a drop of Rhys' blood money on booze
statistically poor people help each other and give more than wealthy people Ever did. Cassian should also be embarrassed as hell by the IC and how they spend money and their attitudes towards the Illyrians and other poorer fae and even how Nesta spends "Rhys' money"
in both ToG and aCoTaR the series end with the main character flush with more money than they know what to do with it and they're married. it's like one step away from Trad Wife smh
poverty is inherently traumatic and affects people on every. single. level. from what we eat to what we wear to who we spend time with to what time we even have to spend

What always confuses me when people try to argue that Nesta abused Feyre, because the books said so and they're gospel, is that, by that logic, Feyre abused Nesta too. They were just as bad as each other, according to the books, so if Nesta was abusive, so was Feyre.
Also, we learn Nesta had literal holes in her shoes and Feyre wouldn't let her buy new ones. Yet she was expected to go outside to cut firewood? Imagine how cold she'd be, with so many blisters and cuts, that would get infected from getting dirt in them.
It makes me wonder what state Elain's cloak and shoes were in? Were they intact enough to even function as needed? If Nesta or Elain complained about holes in shoes or something, did Feyre not at least check if there were or not?
However, if Nesta really has to repay her sister for her hunting, then she did so ten fold by the time she was thrown into the cauldron.
She encouraged Feyre to follow her heart and find happiness, before risking hers, Elain's and their father's reputation and lives by helping Feyre meet the Queens. Did nobody consider that by the first letter, The Mortal Queens could've had Nesta and Elain executed for helping the fae? Even after they agreed to meet with Rhys and Feyre, they could've arrested or executed Nesta and Elain for arguing with them and siding with the fae during their meetings.
None of this takes into consideration what Nesta did during the war. So, the bottom line, is that if Nesta was abusive, so was Feyre. Imo, Feyre has a few things, at least, to apologise and make up to Nesta too, which she hasn't done yet. I'm honestly convinced SJM doesn't know how siblings work. They'er your best friends and your worst enemies who you can count on to always have your back when it counts.
'The text clearly says Nesta is abusive because Feyre heard her voice—‘
Listen if the narrative says something remotely close to Nesta making Feyre feel bad it's not that hard to latch on and make the worst of it as if it’s impossible to question the narrative itself. Which is what we're SAYING. Reading feyre act like that is unserious to us not everyone and that’s fine because we know what it's like to have siblings who we'll trash talk to but also idk maybe go follow them to the end of a magical fairy wall should they happen to be abducted? Kinda like Nesta did? And still not act like the trash talking traumatized us like that? So stop quoting the story as if that’s not what we’re actively criticizing?
And then SJM contradicts herself when she tried to push this idea that Feyre ‘wasn’t perfect either’ and that ‘both’ were shitty to each other but then she also tries to not uncover her poor outlining from the first book where she made the sisters ‘the wicked sisters’ by throwing in measly lines about Feyre hearing Nesta’s voice. So unreal to me. I’m sorry go ahead and be upset about it but I will never take it seriously.
Like in an alternate universe how stupid would it be for there to be a some measly line thrown in about how much it affected Nesta that Feyre thinks she's evil because she acts like their shitty mom. And so therefore Feyre is abusive. That’s all it would take, one line to be published on ink and paper by SJM, for it to be true and verified. Yea no, I’m sorry we are allowed to question things that don’t make sense to us.
Even if I chose to follow the text so religiously then I’d still make my peace with the whole mess since the sisters ‘made up’ because no Nesta wasn't as 'abusive' and even SJM herself tried to sell off as.

How torturous is it to love with everything your heart can give, and then some, only for your acts of love to either be forgotten about or to be treated like the villain for caring? And on top of that, you never once receive even a fraction of the love back.
Nesta loved Feyre enough to go to the wall for her, and she would've gone farther, if she were able, only for Feyre to forget.
Nesta spent her entire childhood taking her mother's abuse so her sister's didn't have to, only for Elain to turn her back on her.
Nesta spent her whole life trying to give Elain the love that she would've given anything to receive from their mother, for Elain to abandon her and condemn her when she needed that love more than ever.
Nesta joined a war for Feyre, only for it all to be forgotten.
She stayed in the mortal lands, despite it being dangerous after the Queens denied the IC's request for the book, clearly ready to sacrifice their people, including Nesta and Elain, all because Elain wanted to be near her betrothed and be comfortable, just for Elain to try and force Nesta out of her safe space, and into uncomfortable situations.
Nesta stayed with Elain, putting aside her own trauma for her sake to look after her, but when she needed the same love and understanding, Elain abandoned her for the comforts Feyre provided.
Nesta put aside her own trauma to help with war efforts, but it's never brought up again.
Nesta is most likely the one who cooked and cleaned and looked after the cabin, and who thanked her?
Nesta is the one who demanded their neglectful father be held accountable for his failures, but, instead, that burden was forced onto her.
Nesta is the one who demanded Rhysand be held accountable for lying to both her and Feyre, only for Feyre to turn around and laugh at the idea of her being punished for something Feyre said herself, that she isn't mad at.
Nesta endured verbal abuse at the hands of Feyre's new family, let them stare at her like a zoo animal, and didn't comment on it.
Nesta would've gone into the blood right after Emerie and Gwyn, laws be damned, to save them. She would've done it for any of them, only for them to decide she's fine and leave her there. Did they worry about her while she was there? Azriel didn't seem worried. Neither did Feyre or Elain.
That's not even the half of it. Nesta loved so much, with her whole heart, and not a single person could give it back to her. Not one. How tiring, and heart breaking must that be for her? The thought alone brings me to tears.

Azriel X Rhys sister oc (but Rhys Centric kinda?! Rhys and Az angst?)
Summary: HOFAS bonus chapter inspired. Azriel and his mate Y/N Moonbeam aka Rhysands little sister have been hiding for over 50 years. When her older brother finds out he is anything but happy.
Masterlist
Warnings: mentions of SA, Yelling, lots and lots of Angst, quite Az.
Words: 1,382.
~~~
She and Azriel had been seeing each other secretly for over 50 years now. They had been through hell and back together, finding out about Rhysand under the mountain, Supporting her brother with his mate, fighting a damned war, and even finding out they were mates. Not once did either of them let on to their secret relationship, always passing each other with cold glances and curt words. The only form of kindness shown was on important occasions. But the minute they were alone, when they got back to their secret apartment, they were perfectly fine.
That was until Rhysand barged into Azriel’s apartment yelling something about Nesta telling Feyre something about their babe and found the two of them laying on the floor. Y/N reading and Azriel mulling over paperwork with a biscuit. In an instant, albeit a second too late, Azriel’s wing was covering her. Rhysands words fell away and he stood still, she could see him just barely through her mate's wing but she knew that her older brother could smell her.
“Azriel,” Rhysand growled out. With a knowing sight, Azriel released his wing that covered Y/N’s frame, not hiding her wings.
The moment Rhysands eyes found her matching violet ones he turned and walked out, slamming the door. She turned her head to her mate whose eyes were glazed over in silent conversation, she decided to listen to what Rhys had told him.
“Do we go? We should probably give him time to calm down shouldn’t we?” She asked, staring at Azriel’s golden eyes. He just nodded quietly.
Silently and with deathly calmness they gathered themselves and flew to the river house. She winced as they walked in the door, taking in the ruined vases and the loud shouting of her other brother and sister trying to calm Rhysand down.
“I DO NOT CARE. THAT IS MY SISTER.” He screamed at Cassian. She turned to Azriel, putting a hand on his chest to stop him,
“Maybe I should go in there alone.” She offered. And with a short nod he agreed, before she could walk away he grabbed her arm, and with a deadly voice he spoke,
“If he even thinks about yelling at you I will be in there. I will just be right outside.” Then he let go so she could enter the room. When she did she gasped at the sight of her older brother.
“Rhysand,” she spoke firmly, only slightly scared as his raging eyes turned on her.
“Is that bastard here?!” He spoke.
“It doesn’t matter, Rhysand.” She went to place her hand on his arm when he flinched away and stared at her with disgust.
“Don’t even get me started on you.” He raised his voice, tears springing to her eyes at his reaction. The pair of them had always been as thick as thieves, never staying mad, and definitely never yelling at each other like this.
In an instant, Azriel was behind her, hands on her waist to inform her he was behind her. Her brother didn’t even glance at the male behind her before continuing,
“I can’t believe you slept with my brother like some common whore.” He spat out like a slap in the face, he knew what she had been through, what she had done for him while he was under the mountain. A cry fell out of her mouth, his words inflicting more pain than any physical blow could.
Before she could say anything the entire room went still, the bottom half of the room covered in angry shadows. Before she could blink her mate had her brother around the throat against the wall.
“Be very careful how you talk about my mate,” Azriel growled, she could feel his anger festering through the bond. She sent a comforting phantom hand over his shoulder.
“Your mate?!” Rhysand laughed, “That’s hilarious brother, no one could ever love a bastard like you. We all know it, just admit it Azriel, you aren’t capable of loving a female.”
And then it was Y/N who was on top of her brother, facing him with a slap that resonated throughout the entire room. Not a single soul spoke as the sound of flesh meeting flesh echoed through the room. Not even Feyre said anything as her sister-in-law hit her mate.
“Fuck you Rhysand.” She yelled. “Fuck you for reacting like this! You are nothing but a cowardly piece of shit. You blame everyone else for everything that is your fault. Did you ever stop and think as to why we didn’t tell you?!” She yelled, Rhysands mouth opened to respond but she continued, “No Rhysand, you don’t get to speak. Maybe if for once in your godsforsaken life actually looked at anyone other than your mate you see that the people around you are going through shit! You would see the face that Elain is on the verge of breaking, that Nesta was going through something none of us could possibly imagine, that Cassian was coping and that I, your fucking sister, was traumatized. I get it Rhysand, what you went through under the mountain, trust me I get it, but it does not give you the right to treat everyone else like shit because they don’t react the same way you do to trauma. You do not get to sit here and act like my brother trying to defend my honor when you haven’t actually acted like a decent brother for the past 3 years!” She screamed in his face.
She gave him one more resounding slap before standing up and finding Azriels hands.
“Do not come find us brother, for I do not want to see your pitiful face.”
Then, hand in hand with her mate, they left. They both flew, flew for hours till they were at the cabin Azriel had built for his mother before she passed. When they arrived and got out of the cold she sunk to her knees, tears finally flowing.
Az’s rough hands came to hold her face, “Shh my love, he is not worthy of your tears.” He murmured into her hair. Instead of trying to calm her again he just let her cry, not once letting her go, instead instructing his shadows to gather water and blankets.
So she fell asleep crying in his arms over the hurt her brother had caused. And when she woke she found Azriel’s dark hair. She stared at him as her fingers twirled in the onyx strands.
“You know what he said wasn’t true right, you know how to love and you are worthy of it Azriel. You and I are the proof, this right here,” she gestured in between the two, lightly pulling on the golden ribbon that flowed between them. “This is the proof. I love you beyond words Azriel. I know you feel the same shadow singer.” She told him. Observing as his hands tightened around her waist. They had both suffered far too much to let the words of her cruel brother diminish all the progress they had made.
It wasn’t easy at the beginning, getting Azriel to open up and come to accept himself. It took him years to realize he was worthy of her love. That he wasn’t a broken bastard.
“I love you beyond the sun and the stars, I would travel worlds for you Azriel. And if the stars would vanish then I would voyage through the darkness with nothing but my bare hands to find you.” She whispered, “I would rip the wings off my back if yours were ruined because I know how much you need to fly. I would kill gods and kings alike to ensure you are safe. For as long as I am alive you will no longer be alone ever again, you will always be loved. I will always love every part of you.” She brought his scarred hands to her lips and kissed the skin on them. When she released his hands her lips found his mouth.
“There are not enough words in this world for me to express my love for you Y/N Moonbeam, So instead let me show you.” He spoke against her lips before moving his kiss down her neck.
And show her he did.
No further comment is required.
Some things about the Nesta-mask-Bryce-Rice situation:
1. The entire situation regarding the decision of whether or not Nesta should give the mask to Bryce was always gonna be a lose-lose situation for Nesta. Because-
Exhibit A: (canon)Bryce asks for help, Nesta gives her mask, Rhys gets mad at her because she gave mask to Bryce and he thinks Asteri will invade. But Bryce won, she gave all the things back, Asteri gone (presumably)
Exhibit B: (imagine)Nesta doesn’t give the mask to Bryce. Bryce most likely loses to the Asteri. Asteri use her to get to Prythian. Prythian in danger. Rhys find out the tid bit about Bryce asking for help from Nesta and Nesta refusing. Rhys blames Nesta and gets mad at her for Asteri invasion.
2. Rhysand’s reaction to Nesta’s decision just adds onto how unstable and unfit he is to be a ruler. His immediate reaction being overtly emotional “I’ll execute you” is wild af. Rather than acting like a composed authoritative figure and excusing himself and calmly discussing the issue with Nesta later, he resorted to acting like that in front of everyone (not to mention the fact that she’s not only a part of his IC but also his sister in law from his wife and his brother’s side).
3. And Cassian is an idiot. No other comment on him.
Sometimes I forget how funny ACOSF was:
Lucien asked, sipping his tea, “How’s the training?”
She gave him a smile—a true one. “Good. We’re learning how to disembowel a male.”
Lucien choked on his drink, nearly spewing it onto her head.
Cassian appeared, a cup of tea steaming in his hands, and passed it to her before he declared proudly to Lucien, “As you’d expect, Nes excels at it.”
