comments on my street food post got me thinking about what i'll call the "purple tomato/gribblethwonk dichotomy"

sometimes the worldbuilding in a story will be along the lines of "pomoros are edible berries that were brought into the kingdom by immigrants from the eastern territories. they are purple in color and have a mild, somewhat tangy flavor. they are most often eaten either raw or stewed, usually with a generous addition of herbs. most from outside the eastern territory refuse to eat them due to unfounded superstitions that they are poisonous to anyone who hasn't built up a tolerance since birth, and it's from this belief that the word pomoro is used as a faintly derogatory nickname for those from the eastern territories"

and other times the worldbuilding is like "gribblethwonks are grown in the shade of schlimzupp trees. if harvested during a new moon then they grant whoever eats them the ability to see in the dark until sunrise. it is a common practice for star-crossed lovers to each eat a piece while sneaking out for a secret rendevous, so they might travel in shadow and not be given away by the lights of their daycrystals."
