The media likes play along with Trump's fantasy of himself as the strong man dictator beloved of the people, but Trump has the worst approval rating for a incoming President since polling started, only one person was worse, him in 2017. Doing sightly (47% approval vs 41%) is being spun as Trump riding high. People also pushed stories before his Presidency started that this version of Trump (or his team) was more ready, knew what they were doing this time! But here we are, his Executive Orders while horrifying are also just as sloppy and poorly written as ever, full of legal holes the size of midwestern states. Also we were promised a "shock and awe!" of 200! EOs! in the end day one they managed just 49 falling far short of record breaking, so they're lazy as well as incompetent. Oh also they used ChatGPT to write the Executive Orders lol losers.

Because someone is on the ball, Turner Classic is playing (among other WWII films) The Great Dictator today.

If you haven't seen it, please do. It was produced by Charlie Chaplin in the late 1930s, when it became clear that the war was going to happen, and came out in 1940 after it had started. Essentially, Chaplin realized that his famous mustache was about to be usurped forever by a fascist, and that fascist was going to kill a lot more people in the future than he had already.

It's a parody, made before the worst horrors of the Nazi regime were known to the general public, so there is discomfort here (if you've seen Disney's Der Fuhrer's Face, you'll get the idea), but the movie ends with Chaplin essentially saying "fuck it, no one else seems to be speaking out about this and I'm going to use my platform to do that."

For context, this character is a Jew who has been mistaken for the dictator (for obvious mustache-related reasons), and has been sent onstage at a rally to give a speech. Instead of trying to impersonate Hitler, he says what he really thinks. And keep in mind, Chaplin was coming out of semi-retirement for this. It was the first time most people had ever heard him speak, and this is what he said:

I meant to talk about MLK Jr with my kid yesterday on the actual day, but it got away from me. After seeing Muskrats fucking NAZI SALUTE in duplicate though, I knew I needed to say something today. So this morning while he ate breakfast, we talked about Dr. Kings words and actions, how he had the courage to stand against the status quo, how even when everyone seemed to be against him, he stuck with his convictions and stood up for what he knew was right. We watched his “I have a dream” speech and my son was fucking CAPTIVATED. (I hadn’t listened to it in a while and I forgot what an amazing speaker he was, if you’ve only ever read the transcript, do yourself a favor and LISTEN to it). I explained that he was killed because people didn’t like what he was saying, they didn’t like that he was shining a light on the dark ugly truths of our nation. And I explained that, even with the fear of death, we still have to be strong and stand by our convictions and speak up when we see something we know is wrong, even when everyone around us is telling us it’s right. He has a super strong sense of justice, almost to his detriment sometimes, so I know this message will stick. I can’t personally do anything about Muskrat, but I can do my best to raise someone who will be better than the men running our nation. I can help the next generations coming up realize that what they’re seeing in our nations capital isn’t necessarily right just because the ones in charge say it’s right. I can do my best to make sure this shit doesn’t just keep repeating.

Trump revoked the 1965 Executive Order (EO 11246), signed by President Johnson, that prohibited discriminatory practices in hiring and employment in government contracting. Since the Federal Government employs huge numbers of contractors EOs like this 1965 one are a powerful tool to influence the labor market, President Biden signed EOs (now also revoked) insisting on a 15 dollar an hour minimum wage and prioritizing unionized businesses.

In the 1980s President Reagan also wanted to get rid of EO 11246, but was told by leaders in Congress if he did they'd pass it into law with veto proof majorities. Today Republicans in Congress are much more racist than their 1980s counterparts and support allowing discrimination in federal hiring.
