So I just Played Star Fox Assault For the First time in Years and I have some thoughts...

So Star Fox, a franchise that needs no introduction when it comes to weird directions for a franchise to take. What started out as another classic Miyamoto title that fit perfectly alongside the likes of Mario and Zelda. Star Fox kinda fell into the unenvieable position of Mid tier Nintendo franchise: Iconic enough to have a bunch of devoted fans and not be lumped in with the weirder more niche releases like Geist, Chibi Robo, and Pushmo, but not quite enough a sales juggernaut to become a core pillar of Nintendo that will almost always get an new game with each console like Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and of course, Mario. With the GameCube being a particularly tumultuous time for the furry space mercenaries.

I'll admit though, GameCube is where I come into the Star Fox story. As I was actually not really a fan of the original SNES game or Star Fox 64. This was because as flight based rail shooters where the cool animals were bound to their ships for most the game, I just didn't really get the appeal. But around the sixth generation with the advent of... Star Fox Adventures I was willing to give the franchise another chance. And while Star Fox Adventure is literally not a Star Fox game, I still enjoyed it as it focused a bit more on something I wanted-actual control of Fox McCloud the character (Of course then I played Smash Melee and basically got the same experience). But ultimately after the GameCube generation Star Fox never really stuck with me the way it had with its fanbase. But there was one more game on the GameCube that I hadn't played for a while. Like... almost 20 years ago. Star Fox Assault.

Star Fox Assault feels like a weird middle child of the franchise no one really wants to talk about even though before the disaster that was Star Fox Zero on the Wii U, this was basically the last home console Star Fox game. And it looked to appease long-time fans of the franchise that wanted an in-depth 3D rail shooter and newer fans like me that wanted more direct character involvement gameplay. Assault originally started as an expansion of the Star Fox 64 multiplayer on-foot death match with the single-player story mode eventually being added later after poor reception to an E3 2003 showcase focusing on just the multiplayer aspect according to Electronic Gaming Monthly. This would also be a Star Fox that would be handled by Namco instead of Nintendo in-house. So did they manage to make that perfect Star Fox that would appease old and new fans and provide a fun multiplayer experience?

Well... its complicated.

Star Fox Assault, even now with my 20 extra years of developing my video game tastes still hits me oddly. The flight sections feel really slick and operatic, honestly Assault really made get the space opera vibes that fans often praised 64 for. The Arwing sections running on a much smoother frame rate than 64 also helps. Add on the damn great score after Adventures pretty generic one, and you might just have one of the best openings of the series. Seriously, even as someone who doesn't really like the flight combat sections, the presentation is strong.

But that's just the flight sections, what about the ground sections? While these section have been controversial, I actually like them. Fox being able to just get out of the vehicle and interact with these planets on a smaller scale is something that kept me from really enjoying the 64 game, but the problem with Adventures is that when they did this, their style of gameplay was closer to Ocarina of Time, with melee based combat and emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving. But Assault giving Fox a gun and making the levels being more open with little platforming honestly feels way more true to the series. Fox run and gunning through Aparoids feels like something out of Starship Troopers, and that's the kind of gameplay I think Fox and co should have and not a magic staff.

However, these on foot missions sadly are hampered by the controls. The tank-ish controls are just not conducive for me, and I would've preferred a more Star Wars Battlefront 2 style of third-person shooting. Also the GameCube controller is just annoying to play a shooter on. It always feels like when I need to get that one precise shot, I'm fighting with the control stick. Still though after all these years, this is still the part of the game I remember the most, and had hoped to see more of with some level of tune ups in future installments, but that ended up being a different story.

Speaking of the story, how is it? Honestly, the story is fun, introducing this new race of cyber insects that assimilate machines and people becoming such a threat the Fox and Wolf need to team up to beat them. Its simple, but lends itself to a lot of epic moments. Aparoids going for a more existential horror than Andros changes up the vibe of what we're fighting being a "Bug Hunt" (yes, I did just go there) and allowed us to put all of our characters under intense pressure. As well as have our banter with Wolf and his crew.

However, one thing it lacks from Star Fox 64 is branching paths, rather they opt for one much longer singular narrative which isn't a bad thing, but that leads into I think the biggest problem with this game, its single player mode is really short. All told-with cutscenes-I spent somewhere between 4 to 5 hours playing the main campaign. This is a shame because the branching pathways of 64 allowed for more replayability and unique play experiences. Now knowing that this game's single player mode came later while the emphasis on was making a great multiplayer experience first and that Assault would see multiple delays across its development cycle, its safe to assume the story treatment of the campaign didn't have enough time.

This is especially bad when we were in the sixth generation of console gaming. See, small tangent, I think one of Star Fox's problems is at its core its a very arcade-y style game, and by the time of the PS1, lots of arcade style games were getting left behind by console gamers. Stuff like Daytona USA, Pac-Man, and Virtua Fighter were more made to be quick quarter munching experiences that got pretty note-for-note home ports just weren't really justifying a purchase with what the amount of content they were offering. By now, gamers were looking for longer games, that were more ambitious in scope and story, and more complex in level design. They didn't have to be played over and over again, they were just a completely filling experience for gamers. This only got more prevalent going into the PS2.

Take for example, Panzer Dragoon by Sega, which started as a Rail Shooter like Star Fox in 1995, but by 1998 would convert in to a more traditional RPG to compete with the likes of Final Fantasy 7 on the Playstation.

But Nintendo being their usual unusual selves didn't really commit hard either way. You got arcade style games like F-Zero GX and WarioWare Micro Mini Games, but then you have games like Metroid Prime and Super Mario Sunshine that open the player up to these diverse 3D worlds and environments that you could sink hours into. Star Fox Assault sadly felt like it was stuck in the middle. You get some space sections that feel right at home with Star Fox 64, but clearly they wanted you to have something more than just being in the Arwing. But the story around those outside the Arwing or Land Master is so minimal it leaves a lot of Star Fox Assault feeling like potential was left on the table.

I know Assault isn't pure Star Fox like a lot of fans want. The on-foot sections were going to be divisive no matter what. There are fans who just want to continue the story of the Lylat Warriors but through the mechanics of 64. However, as a non purist and more casual enjoyer of the Star Fox franchise, I can say having a more intimate character levels can go a long way for people wanting to engage with the game and its world. Instead of just seeing Fox as a little talking head in the corner of the screen, being on the ground as fox fights for life is attractive. But its clear that these sections had a lot of potential just left on the table. Instead of taking the formula of Assault that mixed flying rail shooting sections with ground combat peppered with story and character moments and improving upon it and drawing out new stories or game ideas for it, Nintendo opted to basically just remake 64 again and again.

I guess we'll never know what it look like if Nintendo invested in a game that mixed the air and ground combat in a fun and slick fashion that offered a lot of content. Wait... they did do that it was called Kid Icarus Uprising!

Yeah, its kinda crazy going back to Star Fox Assault as someone who really enjoyed Kid Icarus Uprising and seeing what almost felt like prototype DNA for gameplay. Made even more surreal when researching that Masahiro Sakurai was originally considering making a Star Fox game for 3DS that would utilize the third person shooter style game play to highlight the handheld's 3D technological capability. However, Sakurai would apparently find the "Star Fox style" to be too restrictive for the gameplay he wanted to implement. So he went with Kid Icarus a franchise that had been much longer dormant.

Now look, I know this was supposed to be about Star Fox Assault, but believe when I say Kid Icarus Uprising is a fantastic game. Levels were split up into three parts: a flight rail shooter that would put your trigger finger to the test, an on-foot combat section that utilized stylus based movement, and a huge boss battle. Intersperced throughout a level is main character Pit bantering with his Goddess Palutena and villains that flesh out the characters and serve as a does of comedy.

It's crazy to say, and I'm sure it was unintentional, but I feel like I can see this game being built on the skeleton of Star Fox Assault's core mechanics. Making a character driven story of large scale proportions in the sky that would then become more intimate detailed levels on the ground that has a major focus on character interaction. Except, it manages to improve in the sections of Assault that needed more polish like its story length, its controls, and replayability.

I'm really glad we got a modern Kid Icarus game that fleshed out these characters that I guarantee most had only heard about for the first time through Smash Bros Brawl, and even though it aesthetically and gameplay wise was a soft reboot, still acknowledges the Kid Icarus games before it and the events that would appease older fans and intrigue newer ones to look into. All done in a very presentable and fun package. But it's a shame knowing that this could've been an opportunity for another franchise. A franchise that would've honestly slotted in perfectly with this style of gameplay and who have been having an identity crisis for years and seems to be now on Nintendo's self.

Going back to Star Fox Assault, while I don't think it would've converted me into the type of fan of Star Fox that waits with baited breath of hoping to see it mentioned once in a Nintendo Direct, I do see a lot of potential for it to become a thing I like. The world of the Lylat System and the anthropomorphic space-farers that inhabit it has definite appeal to reach a wide audience. The epic space battles of a Mass Effect, but with the soapy furry drama of Sonic. But it seems like the barrier of entry for Star Fox is finding that fresh idea that gets both fresh and iterative, but also attractive to new players that will grow the brand and please the existing players. And when I see how that it can be done for Kid Icarus and how close it is to Star Fox Assault, it makes me lament that we may have found that direction for franchise and let it slip away.

Sooooo yeah. Replaying Star Fox Assault after so long. I'd say the game is mostly fine to good. With the key decider, I think, for players is going to be if you got enough fun out of 5 hours worth of gameplay. Since Assault is a GameCube game, that means that its only available through second hand like eBay. And because the price for GameCube games is really jacked up, I do think its hard for me to fully recommend this game when I don't think it has one hundred dollars worth fun.

It also is just not "pure" Star Fox. Its not 64 2. Bt it isn't as radical a departure as Adventures. So I know that there's just going to be a bunch of people who don't like the new sections period, I do think it fits enough in the series that it makes its inclusion justifiable as opposed to Adventures. At the very least, I can say this is a game with a lot of potential. And we may probably never see that potential implemented in the Star Fox universe.

What game do you think most deserves a remake?

Any game ever? Kingdom hearts 358/2 days. That game is on the ds and it's still the best non numbered (i.e. 1,2,3, I get it is technically numbered but shut up) kingdom hearts game. It's a CRIME that only the cutscenes were added to HD 1.5 ReMix, especially since one of the things that made the narrative so compelling is that the cutscenes were the reward after a hard day of working missions. The cutscene collection is just the reward without any of the buildup, it sucks. It's fine I guess if you want to just experience days, but the actual game is SO FUCKING GOOD. I'd kill for a days remake. Giving it kh3-ish combat would solve one of the only problems with the game, the boring combat. I don't want them to add mission mode or the non-roxas playable characters, because I want them to focus on the main story, and the consequence of having about 20 playable characters is that every weapon has exactly one combo and it gets boring fast. KEEP THE PANEL SYSTEM THOUGH IT'S SO GOOD.

The only downside to a days remake is that there are certain scenes where Roxas visits places Sora had once been, and on the bottom screen you control Sora at the same time as controlling Roxas on the top screen, and like yeah I guess you could just cut to Sora but it's way less immersive. Still very much worth losing that one thing and getting a remake of one of the best kingdom hearts games, but still.

The only other kingdom hearts games that I'd want remakes for is kh2 (just to fix the disney worlds mainly. They're so distractingly awful compared to the rest of the game and the rest of the series) and Union cross (it's a bloody mobile game that no one's ever played with possibly the most important story in the series. At least the damo279 fandub is PHENOMENAL.)

Other games I want remakes for...

Persona 4, Persona 3 reload is absolutely phenomenal and I think that fixing persona 4's combat (every dungeon is a palace???) as well as all the other small things they could add could very well make it the best game of all time. Also you could call it Persona 4 Rewind and that's really funny

I'd love to see an omega ruby alpha sapphire level remake for pokemon Black and White, maybe even including black 2 and white 2. They've definitely got the best story of a mainline pokemon game (scarlet and violet's gets better, but it's only really the last few hours that are good) and I'd love to see them get a proper loving remake.

Last thing: Chibi Robo. I've never played it, but I've heard nothing but good things and the concept is FANTASTIC. Having a open world (but in reality it's just the whole house) Chibi robo game would be incredible. It's the most unlikely (okay maybe kh2 is more unlikely) one but I just think it'd be really good.

Just for fun, I'm going to make an absolute WORST CASE scenario for Pokemon day (with sillies)

Pokemon decides to announce NFTs (they did put out a job listing for an NFT expert months ago)

Pokemon merch that's just more overpriced garbage. Shitty pastel tshirts that just have the pokemon logo stamped on the left breast area- $50, only goes to size XL.

Pokemon Go has way too much screen time for yet another Kanto fest

Pokemon Masters, Unite, and Cafe just won't end their trailers.

New tv show that's just a vague reality show about celebrities that liked Pokémon once, and it's more of an episodic celebrity biography show with one line or two about Pokémon. Not even fun ones, C tier at best. So, something like T@yl*r Sw*ft's boyfriend's football career, but one line about playing Blue for a few hours at his cousin's house.

Pokemon Home fees will increase

Pokemon Bank will close TODAY

Port of Red, Blue, Gold, Silver, Ruby, and Sapphire to NSO- you have to pay for online to access it over cloud- internet connection required, and for some reason you have to pay extra for them in a Pokémon exclusive expansion pass. No word of third versions. Does not include the events or Japan exclusives.

Black and White 1 remakes announced. It's chibi like BDSP, colors are dry and washed out, there's graphical errors in the trailer frames, they state BW2 specifically is not part of the remake, they promise tweaks to make the gameplay EASIER than ever. Parts of the game are made with AI and script rewritten by Chat GPT, with an error you spot easily in a trailer. Masuda has the remake game director's neck clenched tightly from the back. He looks at you and says "you will buy the games this time. This isn't a request." Japan pre-order exclusives are amazingly crafted Reshiram and Zekrom statues that even have light up tails and eyes, and also you get shiny versions of them only in the Japanese copies, US gets a cheap piece of paper with generic stock images of Pikachu and Charizard on it, everything is shiny locked for everywhere not Japan.

They tease a Legends game. You think it's going to be amazing, you think oh my god we're getting Legends Unova... wait, it looks Japanese, maybe LEGENDS CELEBI???...it's Legends......... KANTO, and it's the most gorgeous thing you've ever seen after the clear lack of care put into their non gen 1 games since the Switch launched. A selling point is, once again, no new Pokémon after the og 151 so older fans can enjoy it better. Your starters are Charmander, Charmander, and Charmander, you might encounter Bulbasaur and Squirtle in post game. Your job is to stop EEEVIL outsiders from the rest of the regions with their newer Pokémon from settling into Kanto. Johto is having an awesome party next door with all the regions invited, but there's been a convenient landslide blocking the only way over. It's just reskinned Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. Professor Oak is your age and putting moves on your mom.

Features a mythical Pokémon based on depression that looks like a tiny salary man, comes with its own movie featuring Ash as a depressed Millenial realizing he peaked at 10. He has to get a job. Pikachu is dying of old age and Ash has to "grow up" and release him and all of his other still living Pokémon. It cuts to real life, and Pokémon was just a game he has been playing for years to cope with his parents' divorce and eventually his own with Misty, then May, then Dawn, then Serena, then Goh, etc. Ash's dad is finally revealed: it's Chris Pratt with bad cgi wrinkles, back with milk. They go to the arcade to play Mario to stomp on some................................................................................................................................................................................... KOOPAS.

"Well that's all. Oh wait, one more thing!"

Ed Sheeran and T@yl*r Sw*ft music video featuring 1 Pikachu in a frame that can be easily edited out, with a song not even about Pokémon. The song sounds like shit and is about another breakup.

There, the bar has been lowered to the floor. It cannot get worse.

Went to a really nice gachapon/gashapon shop yesterday and got some neat stuff!

There weren't a whole lot of anime series there that I was interested in, but they had some SpyxFamily stuff so I gave two of them a go.

In hindsight I wish I had gotten more of the sitting figures because that Yor is so cute and her paint job is really good! (She can apparently hold really teeny things in her arms too.) The Anya is… she's okay. What's with the pose (lol)?

I ended up spending the most cash on these CCS figures, which was surprising to me since I hadn't expected to be so drawn in by CCS merch. I got Tomoyo first, then the Kero/Spinel figure, and did one last try to at least get one of the Sakuras (there were four different types in the set). Might have tried for a Syaoran too but I didn't want to push my luck and potentially get a duplicate, haha. Looking closer at them today, the quality isn't the best and the stands are really flimsy and made of awfully cut plastic pieces. However I got all of these for $4 each so I can't complain.

Sylvanian Families mini toys! I got two because I really wanted the one of the ones with the little house case (I got the car set first). These would make good doll props. I just wish I could fit everything in the house case but the car and grass piece are unfortunately too big to fit in AND keep the plastic case closed.

The sole Sailor Moon gashapon machine in the store had mostly the outer senshi, along with Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask, Chibi Moon, and a random Sailor Jupitor(???). I wanted Sailor Saturn but got Neptune, which is fine. This is a really nice-sized and nice looking figure for a gashapon machine--it's just a shame about the random paint smudges on her face D:

This was from a $1 machine so I had to give it a go.

Inside the egg is a Transformers-esque My Little Pony toy. The novelty and the awkwardness of this toy is worth more than the $1 I spent on it. But why do I keep getting Twilight Sparkle from blind bags/boxes???

The shop also had claw machines filled with more toys and plushies (mostly pokemon stuff). I managed to get the Sylveon on my first try ($1), but I felt bad about leaving the Umbreon since it was the only plush left in the machine. Umbreon was. Significantly harder for me to grab but I managed it after five tries (plus some free tries from the shop owner who I guess felt bad for me and reset the plush two times). These are cute but they don't sit very well as their heads are so heavy compared to their bodies. Plus I think the Umbreon is missing the keychain attachment from its head (these are probably meant to be keychain plushies), but whatever.

The shop also sold Re-ment blind boxes and other fancier figures. I saw this and had to grab it:

A 50th Jump Anniversary Taikoubou (Houshin Engi) figure!!! I never expected to find a figure for such an old/obscure series in a random figure shop, so I immediately bought it.

I ended up spending around $85 in total (Taikoubou figure included). A little more than I expected to spend, but for what I got I think it was a good deal overall.

Ever since my childhood I've been having dreams where I see people or fictional characters who I have not met in "real life". Who actually hasn't even been "made" in real life yet. I "meet them" usually decades later. That was the case with my last night's dream. The dream was long and confusing so I write it the best I can.

In the dream I was with a group of humans on this weird place which probably was an island or something. Our "leader" was this thin and tall man in a black suit with dark glasses. I, now, instantly recognized him as Crowley from Good Omens (which I just saw few days ago for the first time in my life, having not any knowledge of it). He walked us around, showing us placed. There was a rain forest hill with a path which came from the right and headed down. On this path soon walked some dinosaurs and people were in awe! None of them had NEVER even heard about dinosaurs. I think I was the only one but I was in awe as well. I reached to touch one (long neck) as they walked past me and it was a hologram. However, these were "living holograms" so the dinosaur felt my touch, freaking out! It, with every other dinosaur just started to run the path down as fast as they could. I felt sorry for what I did.

We then ended up in a forest with snow. I headed down this small cliff with very steep, tiny steps. They barely showed under the snow. I noticed glass beer bottles, half empty, in the snow and I got angry because I knew it was 3 young men (maybe 18 at max) who drank there and threw their bottles there. Not to mention that area was already right in front of my house's front door. It took me some time when I saw those boys, telling them to drink elsewhere and take their trashes with them. They tried to joke about it but did as I told them.

Next I was on small but round summer field in the middle of the forest with the group and Crowley. I heard this same sound what can be heard when Shiny Pokemon in Arceus appears. I looked around, seeing this huge Ursaluna standing up on it's back legs. S/He stood way above the tree tops even that those trees were ancient and super tall! I got excited since I wanted to catch that Alpha Shiny Ursaluna (Ursaluna is my fave, ahah!). My bird Pokemon flied behind me and grabbed me, taking me to this Ursaluna but when I got there, there was MANY super cute and tiny bear pokemons. All seeming like chibi Ursaluna in different brown colors. I loved them all BUT I got disappointed since I couldn't see or tell that Shiny Ursaluna apart from the others so... I didn't get him / her :'D

Now I was back in that snow forest, heading inside "my house" where everyone else already was. I don't remember all what happened but at some point I was walking on this hallway with doors each side. I noticed that on the floor, in front of every door, was palm sized crystal. In front of one door was glowing red crystal, other had glowing purple crystal etc. I walked through this hallway, turning to left at the end of it, ending up in my childhood's neighbor's living room. I wanted to be alone so I laid down and I think I had a pet there with me, either a dog or a cat. Then Crowley came there too and he had a doberman. I was instantly worried it would attack on my pet but it didn't. Crowley said to me something like: "Why are you here all by yourself?" and I just said I needed some time to be alone. He understood but he remained there, giving me space nonetheless.

Suddenly I decided to look at the window right above my head and I saw black, chimp kind of hand pressed against the window. Very thin, full of wrinkles. I watched it a while thinking how the hell it could be that! I ended up thinking it could be a demon or some other evil entity since I now noticed 2 pairs more. I took a pillow which I had under my bust, starting to slam the window with it, screaming. Turned out those hands belonged to 3 human woman, older ones. Maybe witches or something. I don't remember them so well. Next we all ended up back on this dinosaur hill and once again people were in awe as they saw these dinosaurs. This time, however, it was someone else who touched one of them, making them all rampage and run away. I yelled: "I'm so sorry! I forgot to warn you not to touch them! I did that mistake myself last time!"

Next we all were on a pirate ship, being under attack by other pirates. Crowley easily dealt with them, letting the crew sink with the ship. Next we noticed a ship wreck floating on the sea, some of the crew members hanging there for their lives. We stole their gold or something, but left them with food and other supplies. I asked from Crowley why. He said that bad he left to die but these men needed help so they he let live. I understood his point.

Next we all ended up in small room which had many levels and we waited to get out or something. It was very pretty room but very weirdly shaped and tight. I was playing some matching game with my phone (find a pair and click them so that they combine and disappear from the level) when Crowley came to sit right next to me, leaning over my shoulder to check my game. I was stuck. I eyed the level when Crowley pointed one piece and spoke with his soft voice: "You can pair these." I eyed them once more, deciding to go for it since I was going to lose anyway. So I clicked them, pairing them. Right after that pair vanished, so many puzzles moved and found their pair on their own! I watched that in awe until half of them was gone! I looked at Crowley with wide happy smile, tapping his left arm near the shoulder few times. I said:

"It worked! Half of the pieces vanished on their own! Thank you!"

I felt so warm and happy inside, thanks and towards him, but I felt the same warmth from him, a bit more puzzled too. I knew he had not been used of being thanked, yet alone being touched. Usually none never thanked him or touched him (in a friendly way or at all). I managed to beat the level and then I woke up when Verti was meowing loud, demanding to go out and then also get some food.

But yeah, back then when I saw this dream for the first time like 20+ years ago, I had NO IDEA what or who Ursaluna is or Crowley. Had never seen them, had never heard of them, they had never even been created yet here on Earth.
