which pokémon do you think would work best as neopets? and vice versa?

I hear people toss around "this Pokemon looks like a Neopet" on occasion and it's always clear that the people saying that have no idea what a Neopet typically looks like. For a Neopet, the usual design attributes are:

Eyes either have a defined pupil/iris/cornea, are closed, have black on the outside with color inside, or are dots. There are some exceptions to this (Buzz, Grundo), but the majority fall into one of those categories.

Bodies show very strong color blocking OR are monotone with no markings. The Llamameeah (effectively a beta design) vs the finalized Gnorbu design are a good example of this.

Not a hard rule, but Neopets loves countershading/underbelly markings and manes.

Most Neopets are either real-world animals or strange fantasy creatures.

Neopets can have visual hooks, but they don't usually have any kind of theming because that kind of thing is added during painting. Pikachu couldn't work as a Neopet because of the lightning-bolt tail, for example.

The design must lend itself to being recolored with the standard four Neopet base colours.

Neopets can't be overly humanoid or be multiple creatures at once like Pokemon can.

All that said, here are some assorted Pokemon off the top of my head that I think could be Neopets with a style change and redraw (also not including Pokemon like Goldeen which would basically be the Koi when redrawn):

Neopets that could be Pokemon are much more vague because Pokemon doesn't have as rigid as a style, given that there are hundreds more Pokemon than there are Neopets. It also doesn't help that most Neopets gain theming by being painted, so most base colour Neopets wouldn't work. These ones are probably the closest (falling into the category of "animal with a minor visual theme", "Blob(TM), and "space alien", respectively:

Question! Hypothetically, if you attack someone’s character (who is a Pokémon) and you make a fully-illustrated Pokémon card of the character, how would you go about scoring that?

I'm confused about the art and comic minimums.

So we can draw a full-body art piece without a background?

What do you mean by 3 props for a half-body art piece? Trees and bushes? Buildings and roads? Or do you just want to make sure there's a scene in the artwork and not an abstract background? How detailed does the background need to be?

For the comic minimum we can draw anything as long as it's at least 3 panels? No background required? No color required?

Yes, a fullbody art piece of a character receiving their gift will suffice. No background unless you want to

All the things you listed are valid props! Trees, bushes, buildings, roads, all will count to props/items. Basic sky/ground will not. Clouds, grass, ground may count if they are rendered with shading, detail, etc. Scenes are a way you CAN do it but we also will allow more abstract collage-style art if there are drawn objects around.

And yup! I’ll link back to the clean sketch elaboration here. And three panels is currently our benchmark, and it can be of anything, but I WILL highlight that effort is required. So something like this wouldn't work:

Basically three panels, the same angle, redrawn. The gift is only described, and the process of obtaining the gift isn't. There isn't much personality of either character.

We would be looking for something more like this (bearing in mind that we would probably be asking for a bit more polish than I did here)

there's a bit more storytelling here! And even if the other two panels don't have as much of the subjects being drawn, it brings atmosphere or context to making the gift. Lots more personality! I added colour for effort points, because these characters are very simple to draw. If the subject has a lot more detail like a legendary Pokémon, colouring probably isn't as necessary. Even then, messy colouring is also fine in this case.

Comic minimum requirements are vague because there's a lot of ways you can go about it! We are a community of storytellers and creatives so I wanted to be a little limitless. I trust that participants would naturally put effort into their submission, and we will also be moderating and giving advice as well.

Just to reassure, we do plan on posting submission examples with breakdowns as well, so you and anybody else can get the picture of what they can do. But as we're in Wishlist writing period, we've mostly been providing info about signups, wishlists, etc.

Subtle Connections Between Digimon and Pokémon Pairs...

Ever since the fairly recent interference between the Digital Realm and the Pokémon World, we have decided to study the functions and denizens of the Digital Realm.

This was once done before, albeit trying to copy a Mythical Pokémon's DNA to become a Digimon, but ended in disaster, so we won't mention any sort of detail about the incident.

Either way, thanks to our technology; we have created devices akin to the devices that certain Digimon used to inhabit, called Digivices.

These devices, which we call Poké-Linkers, help the Pokémon with this device link their power with the Digimon that inhabits it, all while helping the bond between Pokémon and Digimon.

Though before we made the Poké-Linkers, we discovered a unique bond between a Pokémon and a Digimon before and during the interference.

Naturally, we thought something like a Charmander and an Agumon to have such a bond, noting the similarities. Though, however, we've discovered that, thanks to a hired rookie trainer, such a bond can come in surprising forms.

A bond between the "Two-Sided Pokémon" and the "Attacker-Class, Dark-Species Digimon", Morpeko and Beelzemon...

Both don't seem to have a lot in common, however, they have similarities in their biology and subtle connections to their personalities.

Morpeko is an Electric/Dark type, resistant to its secondary typing but is also, like other Dark types, weak to the Fairy type.

Beelzemon is a Dark-Species Digimon, resistant to its species-typing but is also weak to Light, which, to us Pokémon Researchers, is the Digimon's equivalent to the Fairy type.

Morpeko has a hunger for food and can get angered if it doesn't have or gain any food. Beelzemon, according to some research, has a hunger for power in order to become stronger and will get angered if it loses a match (fighting seems to be how Beelzemon obtains power, by fighting and eradicating other Digimon) or doesn't gain any of that power, both representing the sin of "Gluttony".

This also would mean both are different definitions of the word "Hangry", though there hasn't been really any confirmation amongst our researchers to believe such a thing. However, both can be calmed and be your companion if you honor their trust in you and your trust in them.

Through research, we have learned that the bond between Morpeko and Beelzemon happened because they used to have the same companion and that they have been looking for her everywhere ever since the companion "has been taken away by a beast" and have been on their journey to save her, yet further confirmation as who this trainer, or "tamer" in Beelzemon's case, really is and who really took her away.

Enough off-topic talk, we also noticed certain parallels with the friendship between the Pokémon Master: Ash Ketchum, and his Pokémon partner, Pikachu.

This parallel is notable, as both Beelzemon and Morpeko have a sort of trainer-Pokémon relationship, similar to most other trainers, but the reason for this comparison is their dynamic.

Much like Ash and Pikachu when they first met each other, Beelzemon and Morpeko don't seem to get along as much, with Morpeko having a loosely-smug demeanor and Beelzemon having a short fuse ready to explode. However, throughout their journey; they've opened up and grown a bond that none of us have expected at first glance. One may say "Opposites do attract after all", despite them having the Dark type. Or Dark species in Beelzemon's case.

With this bond in mind, we strive to make something similar to that by making the Poké-Linkers the moment the interference erupted and the moment we discovered such a bond.

The Pokémon and Digimon, other than Morpeko and Beelzemon, we have decided to make bonds for are as follows:

Charmander and Agumon

Charizard and Greymon

Gallade and Angemon

Gardevoir and Angewomon

Bulbasaur and Palmon

Maractus and Togemon

Ditto and Copymon

Crobat and Myotismon

Houndoom and Devimon

Mr. Mime and Piedmon

Infernape and Gokuwmon

And other various that could be paired.

Garchomp

Soars across the heavens at blinding speed—a magnificent sight! It has a feral disposition. Utmost caution is required if one meets a Garchomp out in the wilds. Its fine scales don't just reduce wind resistance—their sharp edges also cause injury to any opponent who attacks it.

Clodsire

When attacked, this Pokémon will retaliate by sticking thick spines out from its body. It’s a risky move that puts everything on the line. It lives at the bottom of ponds and swamps. It will carry Wooper on its back and ferry them across water from one shore to the other.

Tyranitar

If it rampages, it knocks down mountains and buries rivers. Maps must be redrawn afterward. Tyranitar is so overwhelmingly powerful, it can bring down a whole mountain to make its nest. This Pokémon wanders about in mountains seeking new opponents to fight.

Excadrill

It can help in tunnel construction. Its drill has evolved into steel strong enough to bore through iron plates. More than 300 feet below the surface, they build mazelike nests. Their activity can be destructive to subway tunnels.

Gliscor

It glides soundlessly on pitch-black wings and sinks sharp fangs into the throat of its prey. It takes on a look of satisfaction once it has entirely drained its prey of blood. It dances silently through the sky. When it approaches prey, it can land a critical hit in an instant.

Gastrodon

Long ago, its entire back was shielded with a sturdy shell. There are traces of it left in its cells. It has strong regenerative capabilities. Even if parts of it are bitten off by fish Pokémon, it will return to normal within a few hours.

Game of the Week

The start and end weren't so hot, but that was quite a run in the middle of the week, wasn't it?

With an outstanding blend of platforming, gunplay, and stealth, set against an intriguing sociopolitical allegory, Aerannis easily takes the top spot this week. It is currently ranked number two out of the 57 games I've rated for this site. In my review, I said Aerannis feels like it should be an hour or two shorter. I almost cut that line because I also said the momentum was kept growing throughout my time, that I was still enjoying it, and that I hadn't actually finished the game. It turns out I was only half an hour from the end, which includes time spent reloading my save to change my final choice, which leads to a completely different stage with a completely different ending. If I'd known that, I would have just taken care of it and saved myself the trouble of a speculative review. And that was the key. It's not so much that Aerannis is too long; it's that it doesn't foreshadow its length. There were three or four missions that I thought would be my last. By the time I saw dialogue about the end actually being in sight, I didn't know if I could trust it. Even if I had, I didn't know if that meant another five minutes or another hour. I also forgot to say that it's weird how Ceyda's ponytail stays locked in the same downward position whether she's standing, sprinting, jumping, or falling. This glaring issue is about as important as knowing when the game will end, which is to say, it should not keep you from playing an excellent game.

Keep Your Stupid Game Boy In Your Pocket

Last week, we talked Game Boy. This week, we're doing it again, but with a twist.

I had planned to list off some quick picks that I'd like to see make their way to Nintendo Switch Online, but after looking through my stash of cartridges, I saw a problem: It's not much fun to write, "Nintendo should re-release all the Nintendo games." You don't need me to tell you that the Game Boy emulation subscription should include Pokémon and Donkey Kong. Then, inspiration struck in the form of LJN's T2: The Arcade Game. Why do I own this game? Why was it made?

That's the Game Boy experience. Genuinely fantastic games, built specifically for the platform. Shameless cash-ins based on unremarkable licensed games that could not possibly work within the hardware's limitations. That's what's fascinating about Alone In the Dark: The New Nightmare's inclusion in the launch lineup. A game for no one, which shouldn't exist, from a publisher that's never had particularly close ties with Nintendo? If that's where we're starting, where does it end? Are there any limits?

No, No, There's No Limit

Clockwise, from top-left: Dragon's Lair (Arcade), Dragon's Lair (Game Boy Color), Dragon's Lair: The Legend (Game Boy), and Roller Coaster (ZX Spectrum).

Dragon's Lair was an arcade game that needed a LaserDisc to store its motion-picture quality, hand-drawn animation. The home console adaptation was a terrible platformer. The GBC Dragon's Lair loses cel animation of the arcade game, but given the hardware, it's an impressive reproduction. Dragon's Lair: The Legend for the original Game Boy, however, was a port of a ZX Specturm game called Roller Coaster with redrawn graphics and a lower resolution screen. That's what Game Boy is all about, my friends.

No one thought the rights negotiations would ever be settled, but the work was worth it. GoldenEye's recent appearance on Switch and Xbox was a massive event. As long as everyone's talking—both the lawyers and the fans—why not bring out Nintendo's next adaptation of Ian Fleming's famous spy? No, I'm not talking about Perfect Dark. (Although that is very much a GBC game that also belongs on this list.) I am daring Nintendo to once again follow up beloved masterpiece GoldenEye with extant Game Boy software James Bond 007.

Speaking of Nintendo, Rare, and Microsoft's recent openness to collaboration, it's time to get serious. Despite having already been sold to Microsoft, Rare took some hard swings on the Game Boy Advance. Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, Sabre Wulf, Banjo-Pilot, It's Mr Pants—pull them all out of the freezer. Throw in Microsoft Entertainment Pack and Microsoft Pinball Arcade while we're at it.

Sega is another rival-turned-friend with GBA games you might not know exist. Crazy Taxi: Catch a Ride attempts to bring Crazy Taxi—a fast, fully 3D Crazy Taxi, with both cities—to the freaking Game Boy Advance, and it works exactly as well as you'd expect, but most of their games avoided that mistake. Space Channel 5 took a major audio/visual hit, but the game works exactly like it did on Dreamcast. ChuChu Rocket! on GBA is just Chu-Chu Rocket! Obviously the look and the music are key to Jet Set Radio's appeal, which can't be fully replicated on GBA, but Vicarious Visions did an awfully good job within the limitations. Oh, that's right, the Tony Hawk people developed this one.

Whoops, I'm supposed to be talking about impossible licensed junk. Like Mary-Kate and Ashley: Get a Clue! Like T2, this is one of those mysterious Game Boy games that just appeared in my life. And you know what? I love it! It's a three-character puzzle-platformer, like The Lost Vikings. It might actually be better than The Lost Vikings.

Here's another surprise: The Urbz: Sims In the City might be the secret-best Game Boy Advance game. I'm serious. It's an RPG/adventure game with Sims elements. Rather than managing a house full of Sims, you're in direct control of one character, but you still have to take care of their needs—eat, sleep, use the bathroom, make friends, buy a smoke alarm. I also have the GameCube version of The Urbz, and it's trash. The handheld games (I haven't played The Sims 2, The Sims: Bustin' Out, or The Sims 2: Pets for GBA or DS, but I believe they're all in the same format) are masterpieces in a genre of their own, and I can't imagine the average NSO subscriber even knows they exist.

Well, my plans to take it easy this week have gone astray once again, and I'm only getting started. I don't want to turn the Week In Review into a weekly Game Boy appreciation post, but you bet there's more to come in the future. I didn't even get to the janky Animorphs RPG!
