Cigarettes bastardise your chords like tar, for sins you must repay. I don’t think of you as immoral, just that there’s a holy in your mouth, orally fixated on the smoke. As you breathe it out, the cigarette breathes you in—deeper than a fire to a match, sadly, deeper than how you see my love.

you’re the smoke in my lungs
the lump in my throat
suffocating me sweetly
if only a coughing fit
would befit
your release
i would hold you tight
my last sign of life
you’d squeeze
you had your chance
now i find breath in dance
and life in song
i reached for the moon
and fell from your view
an illusion of blue
it’s been six months now
since i last smoked a cigarette
since i last saw your face
funny how one unhealthy habit
could make a whole world
change

Cigarettes seem to know
The ecstasy of being burnt
And then smoking for someone
Who lit all of you in flames
All by a small click of a lighter
And then slowly devours you
Till nothing is left
Flicks you right away after
Into some street garbage
Till you are not found anywhere, anymore
And all that is left of you
Is the little smoke
Which lingers on in the air
Every single day.

When the years of struggle with a mind that won’t cooperate with the long line of ambitions I have mounted, the reality of my current state sinks in: this is how it has been and this is how it will be.
