obviously, zeus + poseidon + hades all swore on the styx to have no more kids… but they did. and i was thinking what if their kids are cursed because of it (because obvi the gods are gods so they won’t be effected).

thalia grace, daughter of the god of the skies → has a fear of heights

percy jackson, son of the god of the sea → has a fear of drowning

nico di angelo, son of the god of the underworld (where it’s basically always night) → has a fear of the dark

Thinking about Abraham and Isaac in relation to Hazel and Bianca’s relationship to Pluto/Hades…. Thinking about the urge to ask your parent why they would let you suffer such a cruel fate if they knew they could prevent it. (13) Athena x Frederick - He's not a perfect or admirable person by any means but Athena forcing a baby on him that he didn't consent to making was disgusting regardless of how much I like Annabeth.

(12) Apollo x Naomi, Latricia, & Darren - I understand why Apollo was attracted to all three of them but I don't really give a fuck.

(11) Zeus/Jupiter x Beryl - I find interesting that he came to her in both forms but the amount of hate I hold for these two kills most of my interest.

(10) Demeter x Midas - Why the fuck was she into him?!

(9) Hephaestus x Esperanza - I love her but he's kind of a useless fucking deadbeat. A point for him specifically blessing Leo with fire though.

(8) Pluto x Marie - Slightly interested. I don't like Marie, but I don't feel the same distain for her the way I hate Beryl either, so I give a little bit of a fuck.

(7) Apollo x Commodus - Terrible couple but at least they're fun to read about.

(6) Calypso x Leo - I don't like them and find their relationship problematic just like much of the fandom, but the development in HOO honestly wasn't bad. It's just the fact he's a minor will always bother me.

(5) Hades x Maria AND Poseidon x Sally - They're not all that, sorry. I like that Hades & Poseidon care about and try to protect Maria & Sally but Persephone & Amphitrite deserve better so I'm never going to be a fan.

(4) Aphrodite x Tristan - There might not be anything unique about Aphrodite's interest in him, but that's ok. Tristan is pretty likable so I think their relationship actually must have been cute.

(3) Demeter x Phillip - There is no logical reason for them being this high, it's just that I happen to give a fuck. I hate the way Demeter's written but still. She rightfully hates Poseidon, Phillip's a descendant of Poseidon, but he's sweet and kind in a way Poseidon isn't. She also helped his ancestors so long back and he's almost like something good coming back to her for being good.

(2) Mars x Emily - I'm actually so interested in them I want to read a novella or short story about them and learn how they met and fell in love.

(1) Hermes x May - Having a Luke Castellan brainrot means thinking about these two for way too long. They're far from a perfect couple, he has so many lovers and she's perfectly ok with letting go of him in favor of the Oracle. Yet he loves her more than the others. She herself still loves him despite willing to let go of him, and she screams for him, but she was right that he'd move on. He did exactly that, exactly what she expected of him, but he loves their son to the point of negligence in regards to his other kids. Their son is his pride and joy, but he loved her before he loved Luke, so he's also willing to tell their boy to stay away from her, for her own sake. They're both messy AF and their love is doomed but I can't help but give a fuck.

love thinking about the underworld siblings just being absolute fucking creatures. they stare at you too long after a conversation has ended and quickly look away if you notice and look back. they sit catatonic on the floor of a pitch black room and get mildly annoyed when someone turns the lights on. they get each other in a distinct way that no one else ever really could and hold hands creepily like the twins in the shining. nico notices the tiny little things of another person's life and when they ask him How he knows he says "the ghosts in your walls told me" (it's a joke and no one laughs). hazel has a fun night on the town with friends when suddenly she lays her fingertips to the earth and says "oh... someone was murdered here in 1998" and the mood is killed instantly. they have a shared macabre that looms over others like the presence of an urn in the corner of a room. percy/frank/will/jason/reyna are used to it but even they get caught off guard by their behavior sometimes. they need to be Weird in a way that makes other people uncomfortable

• it takes them a bit longer to realize that they’re demigods.

• despite their best efforts, plants will wilt and die in their presence.

• the hecate, hades, and melinoe cabins are in charge of setting up the halloween decorations and like to bring a bit of festive scariness to the camp by raising ghosts and skeletons.

• they’re really close with the hermes cabin because they can shadow travel in and out of camp with contraband.

• many gravitate towards apartment living. their uncomfortable, deadly auras, demigod training and sharp features keep them safe in dodgy, dangerous areas.

• they’re some of the most sarcastic people you will ever meet. they are characterised by a dry, deadpan and dark sense of humour.

• despite popular belief, hades is accepting of persephone’s demigods. he doesn’t directly interfere with their lives as long as persephone doesn’t interfere with his demigods.

• because there are so few of them, they have monthly "family dinners" in the underworld.

• the sass levels are not only off the charts, but wholly encouraged.

• they have a talent for blending in the background, making them excellent scouts and spies. their presence is subtle, preferring to work from the shadows.

• when their nightmares are intense enough, some will unconsciously summon the dead.

• they have resting bitch faces so people often judge them to be unlikeable and mean. growing up, many become bitter of this preconception despite their efforts to dismantle it.

• they become the monsters others see, at least on the surface. as they mature, they soften the resentment they have towards others mislabelling and vilifying them.

• they’re all really good under pressure.

• like their father, they are fair and just (provided they don’t hold a grudge against you). their word is their bond.

cabin exterior

• the cabin is a gothic-style building, with sharp, angular lines and a towering structure. the walls are made of solid obsidian, giving it a sleek, almost reflective surface that absorbs light rather than reflecting it.

• the entrance is framed by two large, wrought-iron gates that creak ominously when opened. the door itself is made of heavy, dark wood with intricate carvings depicting scenes from the underworld.

• a faint mist surrounds the cabin, clinging to the ground and giving the impression of a thin veil between the living world and the underworld. the air around the cabin is noticeably cooler, even in the heat of summer, as if the chill of the underworld seeps through it.

• instead of traditional torches or lanterns, the cabin is illuminated by greekfire. the greenish, ethereal flames burn in sconces along the walls, providing an eerie, flickering light that never goes out, even in rain or wind. the greekfire adds a sense of ancient, powerful magic to the cabin, making it even more intimidating and otherworldly.

• the cabin has subtle decorations like skull motifs and symbols of death, but nothing overtly terrifying— more a nod to the power and respect for the dead rather than fearmongering.

• the ground around the cabin is sparse, with few plants growing near it. there a few dark, twisted trees and wilted flowers that can only survive in the shadows. there’s also a small patch of asphodel that grows near the entrance, as a symbol of the underworld.

• despite popular belief, their cabin is actually the warmest at camp half-blood. this is due to a ventilation shaft-like furnace duct that comes up from the underworld.

• the floors are made of polished black marble, cold to the touch. they reflect the green glow of the greekfire inside the cabin. the marble is inlaid with intricate silver patterns that resemble ancient greek symbols and constellations associated with death and the underworld.

• the walls are made of dark, rough stone, giving the cabin a cavernous feel. they are adorned with ancient greek tapestries depicting scenes from the underworld, like the river styx, the elysian fields, and hades on his throne.

• the furniture and decor feature accents of stygian iron. the metal is used in everything from the bed frames to the candleholders, giving the room a dark, powerful aesthetic.

• the corners of the cabin are always shrouded in shadows, no matter how much light there is. these shadows seem to move on their own, giving the impression that the cabin is alive and watching.

• the beds resemble ancient sarcophagi, with dark stone frames and plush black bedding. the pillows and comforters are surprisingly soft, lined with rich fabrics like velvet and silk, offering a stark contrast to the stone surroundings.

cabin traditions

• they have a tradition of crafting small obsidian tokens, like rings or pendants, which they give to friends or loved ones. these tokens are believed to offer protection against spirits and negative energy, serving as a charm from the god of the underworld.

• if a demigod at camp dies, it’s tradition for the hades and thanatos cabins to take part in the funeral rites. they help guide the soul to the underworld, using a special ritual passed down through the cabins. this ritual is seen as a great honor and responsibility.

• each child of the underworld creates a "memory jar" where they place small objects, notes, or symbols representing significant moments or people they’ve lost. the jars are kept in a special alcove in the cabin and are said to help them find solace and remember that the dead are never truly gone.

• they maintain a hidden underground garden filled with ghostly white flowers, black roses, and even a few pomegranate trees. these plants thrive in the dim light of the greekfire and are said to be gifts from persephone herself. during the fall, they harvest the fruits and hold a small festival in her honor, believing it helps to keep her favor and bring balance between life and death.

jason and hazel's beef in hoo was always way more interesting than whatever percy and jason had going on sorry. the differences in gravity and intrigue in the jason/hazel relationship vs jason/percy are only further compounded by the ways they're connected and the ways that their stories are similar

because 1. they have a HISTORY they knew each other before he went missing!!!!! they were in the fifth cohort together!!!! hazel is the ONLY person in the prophecy 7 that was in jason's life before he disappeared and had his memories stolen. yes they didn't know each other well but if you ask me that was just a bad writing choice rick made. can you imagine if they used to be friends/if jason had grown to be a big brother figure to hazel only to go missing for months and then they have a very awkward reunion on the argo because he barely remembers her and then she's even more betrayed because he doesn't wanna save nico initially. the drama. we could have had it all man

2. beef between a son of poseidon and a child of zeus/jupiter from the grace family? yeah been there done that why are we doing this again (and it was way more engaging the first time). god I wish we had gotten a big fight between a child of jupiter and a child of pluto instead

3. their issues regarding nico were way more high stakes than the silly alpha male posturing rick was trying to force between jason and percy especially considering how mega nerfed jason is written in hoo because no one's allowed to be on equal footing with percy

4. the tacit layer of betrayal in jason being hazel's ex-centurion/praetor only to end up preferring chb (to be clear this particular conflict belongs to jason and reyna and is more impactful between them - but since hazel is actually on the argo and reyna isn't she can still be an opportunity for this camp jupiter/camp half-blood conflict to be explored with jason)

5. I'm just gonna say it - I think hazel ought to have complicated feelings about white authority figures in a military camp as a black girl from the freaking jim crow era (not that this would have ever been explored satisfactorily in the books because as far as rick is concerned hazel is colorblind and hardly ever thinks about race despite growing up segregated. which is crazy unrealistic but whatever)

6. something something about the parallels that jason and hazel have about making hard choices about their pasts in order to have a more fulfilling future

7. this isn't necessarily interesting in and of itself but I just think it's neat that they're both big three roman kids with greek siblings that they didn't grow up with. what could have been interesting is jason seeing how close hazel and nico are and feeling some type of way about everything he never got to have with thalia and some exploration into how that impacts his feelings about the rescue mission. I'm starving for more grace sibling content by the way

8. they both have really awkward romantic conflicts in their pasts that intrude upon the present (whether he and reyna were ever even slightly romantically involved or not) because the jason/reyna thing is written as a initial source of conflict/uncertainty for jiper in the same way that hazel/leo (sammy) was a conflict for frazel to grapple with. this is interesting to me because like... hazel is connected to reyna and jason is connected to leo. like there could have been a moment of connection over letting go of pasts loves to wholeheartedly pursue new ones in the way that both of them are (were) with piper and frank

9. they both died. this bullet is a joke but I just thought I should put it here

10. percy is a well-established character and hazel and jason are new in hoo. percy has 50 povs in hoo and hazel has 28. economically speaking it would just be a more effective use of your limited pages to spend more time developing important interactions and conflicts between two new characters (esp new big three kids) who already have a more interesting foundation than the one involving our previous protagonist of 5 entire books

11. beryl grace and marie levesque. think about this for a second. ok that's all

imo hazel and jason are the most weirdly written new additions to the main cast but I strongly feel that rick severely underutilized the way that characters like those two could play off of each other. hazel isn't just a sweet little cinnamon roll she is passionate and contemplative and morose and guilt-ridden and jason isn't just a bland rule-follower he is kind and committed and loyal and conflicted and they're both painfully self-sacrificing and I just think it's such a shame that these two characters with great concepts on paper and so many obvious threads to connect them didn't get as much as attention as.... whatever happened in kansas did

and I mean if you like the jason/percy conflict that's fine, but I think it's worthwhile to compare the merit of them because rick chose to centralize and build up to one more than the other when he had such perfect material to expand on the other instead and I think that says something about his biases. and I think part of the issue is that rick struggles with strengthening tension and applying complexity to conflicts between male/female characters that aren't romantic or onesidedly antagonistic like clarisse/percy. we have several noteworthy conflicts between male characters but when women are involved it's like rick doesn't know how to put them on equal footing and apply platonic depth. imo this is just another reason why big three girls (hazel/thalia/bianca) don't get to be as powerful and transformative in the overall narrative as big three guys (percy/jason/nico). all this world-changing narrative weight is afforded to big three kids but hazel in particular is weirdly excluded from all of that and doesn't get to have much impactful interconnectedness with the prophecy or with other big three kids. what happened to big three kids being super dangerous when put together or when they're on opposing sides of conflicts!!!!!!!! we had impactful percy/thalia and percy/nico and jason/percy and jason/nico conflict where is the fleshed out jason/hazel beef!!!!!!

anyways tldr all I'm saying is that jason and hazel complement each other well and rick was too hung up on the Colliding Of Alpha Male Strong Dudes (that he didn't even write well) to see everything that hazel and jason could have had instead
