En Garde Ch 21 - Angulation is up on A03

Summary:

The group were celebrating Altara making it to the finals, but Triston, her ex, decides to spoil the mood by getting drunk and causing a scene in the club. Later, Vivian and Altara make a promise to eachother to face eachother in the final, and Altara intends to keep that promise, but first, she needs to get through the finals and defeat Aelia Aurelius, the crimson queen, a fencer from Tevinter who had a reputation for hitting too hard when she scores points and being a bit of a bully on the piste.

"Come on, your bout is in five minutes, let's get you suited up," Lucanis says, his hands resting on her shoulders gently. She looked up at him and grinned.

"Ok, can you help?" She asked with a cheeky grin, making him blush.

"Mi amore, if I help you, you're going to be late for your match." He whispered in her ear, and she nearly melted at the gravely purr.

"Maker, your voice should be illegal." She comments, making him chuckle as they walk to their booth to grab her gear. There is a changing room set up near the piste area.

"Remember, Aelia hits hard, but she isn't that flexible, use that to your advantage." He says as she's changing into her uniform.

"Don't worry, I will," she says, pulling back the curtain. Her pure white uniform looked good on her, they had swapped out her lame for a custom one like Lucanis, adding a little flair. her face guard had her rose insignia painted on it.

The Cantori Diamond was making a show of the finals, using the stage and LED screens to introduce the competitors before they walked down to the piste, their insignias would be projected on the screens behind them, their name in bright lights.

The crowd was earning it up. Enjoying the theatrics of it all. Antivan's were known for putting on a show and being extravagant.

Lucanis takes her hand in his and pulls her close, pressing his forehead to hers.

"You've got this, I know you can win." He says softly, she smiles, kissing him. A wolf whistle breaks them apart. Lucanis blushes slightly.

"Wish me luck." She grins at him, making him laugh.

"You don't need it." He retorts

A bit of an update:

I've been out of fencing for the better part of 5 years now. I never thought I'd fence again. But as chance would have it (or fate, according to sabre mother. He prophesied when I was a baby 19-year-old fencer that I would be a coach by the time I was his age. He was 31 at the time. I just turned 31) I am now coaching sabre! [Yes, I also don't believe it... and I've done it for 3 weeks now.]

Because I am coaching I decided I need to make sure I'm a halfway decent fencer. So I went back to my old college club (they accept both students/staff/alumni and community members). Needless to say, it was something else to say, "yeah I'm a club member from 10 years ago." And then have people say, "oh my God! You're that one name on the armory wall!"

So I guess redthefencer is alive once more! Expect content like, "I'm 31 and I'm trying to fence like I'm 19 wtf" and "shit my fencing students say."

I'm glad to be back. And those of you who are still around after all these years, it's fucking great to see you.

What do you think about the fab five polycule

i'll be SO honest i wish i had like. insightful interesting opinions on them but i've always been a Young Justice kid and sort of. breezed past consuming Fab Five Teen Titans content-

but of what i *do* know, from the few comics i've read with these characters is this is one of the best ships for Dick, honestly. it always deeply annoys me when fanon content breezes past the Titans as if they're just some distant teammates and not some of Dick's closest friends, if not a second family. *especially* the Fab Five. for most, if not all of them, it's the first time getting to actually connect with other teen heroes. so there's something fun about how sort of terrible they are at it, at first. they all care about each other a lot. but they're kind of chucked into the deep figuring out how to work with each other and get along with *very* different personalities, so it's fun to see where the conflict comes.

as a ship, i do really love it. the Titans are a family. like we call a lot of teams found families, but for the Fab Five, that shit is the truest. they depend on each other and trust each other. when Dick and Bruce are on outs and Bruce fires him, he goes to the Titans.

i also enjoy how, to an extent, all of them are outsiders of some kind. Donna is alone in a new world she's never experienced, the same as Garth. Roy is still new and awkward to living the rich life with Oliver. Wally doesn't connect to his parents well. and of course, Dick has lost his parents and only has Bruce, who isn't the most emotionally available. of course they're going to cling to each other, as the first people they can really develop connections too. they're very clingy with each other and i think that's both cute and *fun* to explore like, codependency issues with them. how protective they can be of each other, how they default to trusting each other over their mentors, etc. it's all very interesting for a polycule, especially since for most of them, it's their first real relationship. i'm a big fan of "none of us know what dating looks like bc we've had such strange childhoods so we don't understand the Rules very well. we're all just going to date each other bc why would i date only one of you. do teamups count as dates now." vibes with teenage polycules. and the Fab Five just. have that on lock. they each fulfill a different "niche" in the group. Garth is the softer, more emotional one you can go to if you're upset. Donna is the one for planning bright fun trips and making sure you don't wallow. Roy is protective and can pretend to be suave, but he shows affection through gift giving and grand gestures where words fail him. Wally can cheer any of them up with jokes and distractions. and of course Dick is the logical one who makes sure they all keep their heads on and don't drown in the responsibility.

overall i think it's a really cute ship and i do wish i just. knew more about them to be able to write them/read fic of it because i do love their dynamic. and i'm just a firm believer in the Titans being Dick's family, just as important to him as the Batfam. they're a disaster and for that you gotta love them.

Nitpicky pet peeve for published books, I find it extremely grating when a character isn’t doing something they otherwise would and it’s obvious the only reason is the author has decided “X can’t happen yet for the plot”. Because it’s totally fine and reasonable if X can’t happen yet for the plot, but then…come up with a legitimate reason for the character not doing X? Don’t be lazy about it!

(This complaint brought to you by the fact that the protagonist of the book I was listening to was confronted by what he thought was the dead body of the love of his life and went into a blind rage and tried to murder the antagonist who was responsible for her death and he…stopped himself for Reasons that seem to boil down to “she wouldn’t want me to kill someone” except that a) he regularly kills people who have done far less than the antagonist, b) she knows this and is fine with it, c) she would definitely support him avenging her with murder (to be clear she is not actually dead but neither he nor the antagonist know that), and d) this motherfucker (the antagonist) definitely deserves to get murdered. Like…it would have been extremely easy to write it as “he was stopped by the guards in the room” or “the antagonist managed to escape” so the fact that the reason the antagonist is still alive is because the protagonist had a bizarre crisis of conscience resulting in a complete and total personality change is just???????? Please be so fucking serious rn)

En Garde Chapter 20 0 Hit is up on A03

summary:

The Diamond has finally reopened its doors after a long period of closure for repairs the Foil Tourney is mere hours away, the opening ceremony is a little different this time. The Demon of Vyrantium was coming out of retirement for one off bout, an exhibition match, where anyone could challenge him for the chance to skip the elimination rounds and go straight to the final, but who would be stupid enough to challenge him.

"Hey, watch where your..." The man trails off as he recognises Altara

"Altara?" He asks, not believing she was here, this was a foil competition after all. He glances between her and Lucanis and frowns at how close they are.

"Triston, are you here to compete?" Altara asks, trying to ease the tension, Lucanis frowns, feeling how tense she was beside him. Who was this man? Why was Altara shrinking away from him like she was frightened of him?

"Of course I am." Triston smirks, glancing at Lucanis with a smirk. "The Demon of Vyrantium, didnt think I would see you here." He greets him, but it comes off snide like an insult.

"I'm sorry, do I know you?" Lucanis replies coldly. He didnt like how Altara was reacting to this man, didnt like the way he was looking at her either. The man Bristled.

"Triston Chevrolet, current Foil champion, ring any bells?" He smirks at him, and Lucanis smirks back. Did he really think that meant anything to him? "Can't say that it does," He retorts, pulling Altara to the side to let him pass.

"What are you doing here, Altara? This is a foil competition, not sabre. You don't belong here." He says, ignoring Lucanis, to look back at her.

"I'm competing, actually." She snaps back in her defence, and Triston lets out a bark of laughter like it's the most absurd thing he has ever heard.

"You compete in foil!" He scoffs, "You should stick with Sabre, it's easier." He taunted, like he always did. She had no idea what she had ever seen in the man. He was so full of himself, always putting others down to make himself feel like he was somebody.

"You should probably get a better instructor than a washed-up Fencer like him. he hasn't competed in years, if you want to get anywhere in foil, maybe I could teach you a thing or two" He smirks.

Lucanis steps forward angrily, but Altara stops him, holding her hand in front of him. "Don't listen to him, he's just jealous." She snaps, and Triston bristles like she struck a nerve.

"Like I care who your fucking." He snaps back before entering the lift. "See you around." He smirks at her as the lift doors close.

"Asshole," Altara growls, marching down the corridor angrily. "Altara, wait," Lucanis calls after her, catching her arm.
