hey this isn’t aimed at anyone in particular but I’m saying it for the record here: if I tell you no, please stop messaging me about fundraisers and mutual aid.

I get enough messages that it’s impossible for me to keep up without devoting at least half an hour each day, when I’m not even on tumblr that long most days. Me having a boundary about this isn’t a moral failing, it’s a lifeboat for me on my own blog.

In my personal life I’m already advocating and donating literally as much as I can spare. This is not me not caring, it’s just me not willing to interact with that on the one place I go online to not interact with irl news and world events for the most part.

I cannot be upset all the time. I cannot be upset everywhere. I cannot use all my emotional and mental energy fielding my own upset from ongoing events. My options are to hold boundaries about this or stop coming online at all.

I’m all for sharing information and signal boosting to reasonable extents, but the scale of it this year is so large and so enduring that it is literally not possible to for me to participate on every account I have. I’ve previously shared links to Gaza eSIM donations and a major hub of verified Go Fund Mes here and elsewhere online. We, the online humans, know how to look those things up ourselves by now. There are many, many people choosing to do advocacy work, and right now, I can’t be one of them.

If you’re extremely upset when I tell you I can’t share/donate right now about a Gaza family or personal fundraiser you ask me to share here, just unfollow and block me. That’s what those buttons are for. Protect your own emotions and energy and get me off your feed instead of staying upset and continuing to engage with online people or content that upsets you.

Tips on spotting Palestinian aid scams + more

Turn on timestamps, if the account is a day old but they have reblogged tons of stuff be suspicious

If the name they claim to be and the name of their PayPal account aren't the same

If their username appears to be an autogenerated list of random words (ex: persongarden, jollyduckdetective, sotyphoondelusion)

A lot much all of these scams will use diabetes as the reason for why they need money, specifically the medication Humalog

Don't trust blogs just because they say they are verified, often times they will say VERIFIED POST and then don't specify who they are verified by

If you are suspicious just dm them and kindly ask some questions. After a couple minutes they will usually get very defensive and block you.

Verified posts usually have a GoFundMe. If you get an ask saying they are vetted and just have a PayPal, be suspicious.

I hope this is self explanatory but if someone asks/has an option to send your credit card information over email DO NOT DO THIS. This is how people get their credit card hacked.

In general I'd say assume any mutual aid asks you get are a scam to be safe, research them and if it turns out to not be a scam, donate!

Reblogs/replies missing on their post - if you go to their replies section and it looks like this start asking questions.

BEFORE YOU SEND ME AN ASK ABOUT IF SOMEONE IS A SCAMMER. PLEASE DO A BASIC SEARCH OF THEIR USERNAME IN TUMBLR. IF SOMEONE HAS A GOFUNDME, SPECIFIC DETAILS, AND IMAGES ABOUT THEIR LIFE I CAN ALMOST GUARANTEE IT IS NOT A SCAMMER.

If you have verified that a blogger is a scam please report their account on Tumblr and PayPal.

First of all, don't beat yourself up, it's frustrating but these people prey on our generosity and emotions. Secondly, it is important to note that PayPal encrypts your debit/credit card information, however the scammer will be able to see your name and email address. Unfortunately donations on PayPal are not refundable, however you may be able to contact your bank to get your money back. Here is PayPal's article with information about donations and what information is shared.

🕊️🍉Watching Out for Scams and Helpful Ways to Help Palestinians in Need🍉🕊️

With the humanitarian crises across the globe, there are (very unfortunately) absolutely vile people who want to take advantage of these horrific circumstances to make a quick chunk of change.

This is very bad since often legitimately new users of Palestinians in need seeking assistance from tumblr who just don’t know the culture here (IE: don’t really get that it’s considered rude, bot-like behavior to send asks about donations) are lumped in with these scammers and get banned, treated like spam, etc.

I hope this post can help people here discern if this is going to a real person in need or just a slimy scammer.

Things to look out for

Very guilt tripping language. Typically things like in very big red letters saying to please don’t scroll past at the most tame to actively berating users or the person the ask was sent like having very graphic descriptions of violence and saying “you wouldn’t want that to happen to you, would it?” at worst. The use of guilt tripping language is very intentional to convey urgency to anyone who may scroll past it, and make them feel awful if they don't do something right this second.

Check the age of the blog. I’m one to talk with having just made this sideblog, but it’s common for scam blogs to reblog a bunch of random posts to appear legitimate and their only original post is the one calling for donations.

Check to see if the Go Fund Me has been vetted by blogs known to vet and verify the legitimacy of Go Fund Me campaigns on tumblr. There are a few users who are known to verify the legitimacy of campaigns of those in need through a pinned post. Make sure you use the exact spelling as often scammers will see the name of a legit campaign, but end up switching a letter, spelling differently, etc. to appear all the more "legitimate". These users are @/el-shab-hussein , @/nabulsi, @/ibtisams, @/palipunk. Some have stopped vetting for fundraisers, but it's always good to check through their lists.

If the Go Fund Me link redirects you to a PayPal, it's very likely a scam. PayPal offers it's services to a lot of countries, however, it does not offer it's services to those in Palestine, unfortunately, so if someone is using PayPal I would consider it a major red flag.

If Venmo or Cash App are mentioned as a way to donate or any Go Fund Me Links redirect to there, it is absolutely a scam. Those apps only work to users in the US (and in the UK for Cash App).

Of course I'm aware that there are sometimes legitimate campaigns that may be organized by a relative or a friend living elsewhere and take donations through some of these means. However, it can also be something very easy to lie about. With the sense of urgency a lot of these posts present, it can be difficult to deduce if someone is really in need or if it's a scammer. You are not a horrible person for being informed about a lot of scam tactics and scrolling past.

Just remember a very important rule of thumb when coming across posts or asks:

Since yes, people do in fact lie, take advantage of the suffering of others and the kindness of those who want to help to make a quick buck. It's truly vile behavior and I hope this post can make users more informed about having a sharp eye when it comes to keeping an eye for scams, so that more people can be helped.
