“The things you criticize AI for is stuff most of your tech does” is not whataboutism for a simple reason: AI literally is built into the same industry as the rest of the tech you use, bc it’s the tech industry. Thus, trying to reject AI alone for what is essentially a product of a hyper capitalist tech industry is functionally useless.

For example, it’s very reasonable to be concerned about the new Twitter data center that’s poisoning Memphis right now, and single out the LLM, grok, as a source of it. However, generating an image using locally run stable diffusion does literally nothing to contribute to this. Conversely, using Twitter without using grok absolutely contributes to the polluting Memphis. If we try to simply boycott AI entirely and nothing else, we still contribute to that data center. However, if we single out Twitter/X as a company, then we can actually have an effective boycott.

If your problem is the environmental cost of all data centers, and you single out AI as the source, but still continue to stream video (ie Netflix, YouTube, TikTok etc), use social media, etc, you are still contributing to the stuff that’s at least 90% of current datacenter output. I know this is news to people but data centers didn’t just. Suddenly become a problem post-AI.

People pointing this out are not being contrarian for no reason. Current anti-AI thinking has done literally zero for actually combatting the issues we need to care about, because a lot of these problems go beyond AI. This is the tech equivalent of banning straws.

The point of this isn’t to go “oh and yet you participate in society…interesting”. The point of this is to show how you need to be thinking systemically about these issues beyond the superficial shit you hear in op-eds and tweets, which by the way, frequently misreport the actual data/info regarding the situation.

Amazing how even when people try to criticize the US military and rightfully identify the US as imperialist, they still manage to defend US soldiers as innocent poor little meow meows who were forced to kill people for capitalism, had no free will in choosing to sign up to do imperialist murder, and are the real victims.

Also, how many times do we have to go over that the US military is NOT made up of impoverished people, who are actually the least likely to enlist, but the majority are middle-class and wealthy (mostly white) Americans who join out of patriotism and military family legacy, and if they are 'deprived' of anything, it's entitlement to a free MBA and corporate consultant job.

When we have these discussions about "be nice to men" or whatever. We often use a variation of this line: "Would you expect a poc to be nicies and considerate to whites all the time?"

I've used this before myself, and I do think it's an apt enough comparison. But yknow, rarely does it work. It flies over their head. Because for one, half of them think we really do need to be nice whites. And the other half... for as radical or punk or progressive as they might think they are, they know nothing of what its like to be a poc.

Gringos can never understand the true extent in which I have been terrorized by crackers. Tell me, have you ever had to read the leaders of your country posting about feeding people of your skin to alligators? Most people were rightfully disgusted to see such a thing, but I think theres a fundamental difference between reading that as a gringo as opposed to people like me.

To tie this back to the topic of men. Im sure alot of you are more familiar with being terrorized by men. Me too. Physical, sexual violence. And every single time, it was a man, mostly white men. This is my reality, and my life. Why do I always have to be egalitarian? Why must I reassure your insecurities, affirming that you're not a meanie because of your whiteness and/or maleness?

I can say all of this, but the crackers who read this likely won't learn anything from it. Because to you, I am a hypothetical. A bargaining chip to win arguments with. Ever notice how the most #punk trans and/or gay people, if they're white, always end up doing imperialist apologia? I certainly do. In all these small ways, they're always trying to downplay colonialism and racism in any way they can. I have to see this, and walk on eggshells lest I hurt their feelings.

So no, making fun of men or whites is not gonna kill you. No matter how mean we get, you'll be the ones getting paid more, the ones who abuse the global south for your grotesque spoils. And you'll be the ones to rape and kill us with a slap on the wrist. So just get over yourself, jeez....
