✨ It's two weeks until Hanukkah and Christmas! ✨
If you celebrate or who have loved ones who do, and you're looking for a gift -- I'm running a holiday sale of my novel, A Box Full of Darkness. It's just $1 USD on Kindle through the end of the month. :) If you would prefer a paperback, it is currently $12 USD.
Here's what reviewers are saying...
"I had a hard time putting this book down. Tessa, Ryan, and the rest of the cast felt so real and well-rounded, and I found myself cheering and crying along with them. While the book covers a lot of dark subjects, the author handles them with the proper care and gravity, while at the same time letting hope and love shine through. A wonderful read!"
"A book that had me ignoring housework and reading instead! The story moves along with interesting changes all along the way. Loved every page and learned a lot about the military and politics. A must read!"
"I've been in a reading slump for a while now but I finished this book in three days. I know this sounds weird but I've never been so proud of a book character until Tessa. She is the heart of the book and the way the author treats her and all the other characters with compassion and care brought me to tears several times. In addition the political angle and stories of friendship kept this character driven book so refreshing and interesting!! Loved it!!"
"This is an absolute work of art. If you like character-driven stories full of emotions and resilience, political intrigue, questions surrounding morality in complicated relationships, and amazing writing, you’ll love this."
"Just finished my reread of this book after the US election news and it comforted me so much."
#so grateful to everyone who has read the novel so far#reblogs tremendously appreciated#if you have read it please feel free to leave a review on Amazon or Goodreads!#eternal props to @chewytran for her cover design and @broomchickabroom for her interior design#if you want royai vibes this is the novel for you :)

I just played . . .
Taking place in a small town of Gallows Creek during the 1980's, you are Forrest Nash, the new radio DJ from Chicago who assumes the role of a late night show host for the town's only radio station. While expecting a slow night of music and silly contests, things take a dark turn when you receive news of a murder which throws Forrest into the role of savior for the town.
There's a killer loose in Gallows Creek and people are in danger and Forrest Nash is their only hope of saving lives and uncovering the town's dark secret.
Okay, a lot of things to point out.
Strong Narrative - Meaning there is a LOT of dialogue between Forrest, his producer Peggy, and the numerous callers who need their help eluding a killer. Walking a jogger who lost her keys hotwire her car to escape the killer and aiding teenagers trapped in an abandoned house come up with an escape plan are just a couple of the things you'll be doing in this game.
Puzzles - The puzzles that range from easy to mid level difficulty. I actually had a pen and notebook next to me to take notes of anything that seemed important, but they were all fun. As long as you pay attention and be investigative, you should figure them out. However, be sure to save often incase you get something wrong and want to retry, you can easily reload to a previous save so you can try again.
Interactive - You are literally a radio dj. Meaning you can put on songs from a collecting of vinyl records, fulfilling song requests, and play ads. There are hidden records you can find throughout the studio as you explore to find clues to aid you in recusing the citizens of Gallows Creek.
Game Length - The game is only a few hours long. Easily beatable in an afternoon or evening. (Better to play at night for the creep factor).
Atmosphere - Perfect. It really captures the tension and atmosphere of 80's slasher films. Every time I left the booth to explore the studio, the music would change to a low tense beat, reminding me there's a killer out there.
I know Diablo 4 is just around the corner for a lot of people, but I would for this gem to be buried under the hype for Diablo 4. While I'm sure Diablo will be a great game, I also believe Killer Requency is a great game too. And I also believe great games deserve great attention.
So give this game a shot on Steam, PS5, and there is also a VR version available.

Hey there you little shits (/pos)
So recently I have mentioned a webtoon that I’ve been working on. Now, while it is no where near finished, I really need some help. Even if you don’t know me super well or at all. Even if you don’t care about this (I can respect that)
So I have a character in my webtoon who is mute and communicates through sign language. I’m going to be honest I don’t know too much on this specific topic so I came here for help. I really want to know
What is a stereotype/way it’s depicted in media/common misconception that bothers you? As many as you want, the more the better!
My main goal here is to make this character & their experiences realistic as possible. I really don’t want accidentally portray some form of misinformation.
Thank you to everyone who read this through <3
I hope you have an absolutely lovely day

Sonic x Shadow Gens Review.
(MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!!)
So, gamers, i have played and finished Sonic x Shadow Generations, both campaigns, and i just wanna say.... GOD. DAMN.
I cannot believe that Sega released a Sonic "remaster" and it actually TURNED OUT GOOD!?!? WITHOUT ANY BUGS!!? NO GRAPHICAL GLITCHES FROM MY KNOWLEDGE!!?!? WHAT HAPPENED!??!
I will quickly go over Sonic Generations before we talk about... the big boy.
So, how is Sonic Generations? Welp. It's.... it's the same game!! And as someone who played it on PC for years, it looks identical to the original release! Maybe the colours are tweaked? The UI looks way nicer with the resolution boost and the chao rescue stuff is really cute.
Uh, i will say though. i do like MOST of the rewriting that they did. But here's the thing, Sonic Generations' story is like eating a McDonalds cheeseburger, but it's only the patty and buns. The rewrite just adds some cheese and a dab of tomato sauce. It's better, but you're still eating a damn McDonalds cheeseburger. And to add on to this, the VAs didn't sound... good, this time around... Idk, something seems very off about their performances? Mike Pollock especially, bro lost ALL OF HIS ENERGY in his Eggman performance. Tails' VA sounds kinda... bleh too, i dont know what happened here. Roger Craig Smith sounds bored playing Sonic, and i feel bad for him because Ian Flynn's writing can be pretty damn wordy. He's a skilled voice actor FOR SURE, but i never clicked with his Sonic, ever. (Jason Griffith, i miss you every day, my sweet prince... They took you away too soon... At least i still have the definitive Sonic voice in the Japanese version...)
The story also continues the trend of turning Amy into a boring side character with zero personality or spice because GOD FORBID A CARTOON CHARACTER ACTS CARTOONY AND A LITTLE CRAZY! SHE IS NOT AN ABUSIVE STALKER WHO WANTS TO FORCE SONIC INTO THINGS HE ISN'T COMFORTABLE WITH! SHE IS A FUCKING FANGIRL OF SONIC WHO WANTS TO HANG OUT WITH HIM AND SHE LOVES HIM AS A PERSON!!!! IF YOU PLAY THE OLD 3D GAMES WITH RETRANSLATED MODS YOU WILL SEE!!!!!!!! GOD!!!
But i could make a whole post about Amy man... I really could...
Okay enough about Sonic Generations, it's time to talk about Shadow Generations and what do I think of it?
First, I'll brush over the story, NO SPOILERS DON'T WORRY!! I will say this, there were plenty of moments that easily got tears out of me and the stuff involving Maria and Shadow? Oh.... oh baby... PEAK!!!! Black Doom is really dope too, Shadow was pretty well written in this, too, and his VA knocked it out of the park!!! Kirk Thornton, I'm sorry that i doubted you... And Maria's VA too? Love the performance!!
However... This story feels... underdeveloped? Undercooked? it feels like there needed to be MORE! I think that the pacing felt a litttleeeee too fast and i kinda wished there was just more to chew on! It's like eating some damn good chocolate ice cream, but the ice cream is just one scoop. LIKE I WANT MORE!!! I WANT TWO SCOOPS!! I WANT SOME CHOCOLATE CHIPS IN THE ICE CREAM!!! UGH!! It's good, BUT I WANT MORE!!!! There needed to be more on it's bones, more screentime with Maria and Gerald, more time fleshing out stuff and properly explaining Black Doom's return instead of it being optional dialogue in the white world or prologue animaton on YouTube that you could skip. There's all this cool optional shit that is well... OPTIONAL!!!! And it actually enhances the characters, BUT I DIDN'T SEE IT UNTIL I LITERALLY BEAT THE GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DIDN'T READ GERALD'S DIARY UNTIL AFTER I BEAT THE STORY!!! THE LAST TWO PAGES ARE LITERALLY AT THE FINAL SECTION OF THE GAME!!!!
There is this one moment with Maria and Shadow and like.... it gave me the biggest damn smile on my face. And the ending too man, my god.
ALSO THE CUTSCENES ARE FILMED REALLY WELL?!? HOLY SHIT THEY ARE ACTUALLY GOOD?!?!? It makes Frontiers look like a PS1 game in terms of quality like holy mother of god, the cutscenes and animations have improved so MUCH in the span of one game... It makes me so so excited for what's to come....
NOW! GAMEPLAY TIME! How does Shadow control? How does this black and red alien hedgehog play?
I'll put it like this... Imagine Sonic Forces, BUT!!! The air control is better, platforming feels smoother, the homing attack is better and more satisfying and 2D control feels actually good. it's just like Forces but everything feels a lot better, it's WAYYY BETTER THAN VANILLA CYBERSPACE FROM FRONTIERS!
Good controls don't mean much if the levels aren't good, BUT THANKFULLY Shadow Generations level design is actually pretty damn solid, and each level made me feel satisfied and wanting to go again!! There's plenty of optional pathways but the pathways don't really go to brand new exclusive areas. It's not on the same tier as Sonic Generations, BUT! It's close.
My favourite level is either Sunset Heights or Radical Highway. YES! THE SONIC FORCES LEVEL IS MY FAVOURITE! HOW CRAZY IS THAT?!!? THEY TURNED MID TO GOOD!!!
I also love how the collectables are placed on the harder pathways and reward you for skillful play, unlike in Sonic Generations where most of the red rings ARE ON THE BOTTOM PATHWAYS!!!!! WHY?!!? THAT'S THE PLACE MOST PLAYERS WON'T GO TO!!!! Ugh. I hate collecting red rings in Sonic Generations but thank god the collectables are actually fun to grab in Shadow Generations.
Now i wanna brush on the white space because i have some words to say on that too.
White space was really fun to explore and unlike Frontiers, you could see things in the distance and platforms don't just pop in!!!!!!!!!! I loved doom surfing around, finding chests, bolts and just running around. It's really fun. It's not as in-depth as Frontiers, but i want the next Open Zone game to take a lot of inspiration from this white space. Also, seeing Omega and other characters in the hub and talking to them is really cute stuff.
Finding ALL the chests and bolts tho makes me wanna wish a thousand year torment onto someone.
And speaking of Doom Surf... The Doom powers and Chaos Control, i.... LOVE THEM! They are the perfect way to make Shadow more unique from Sonic and give the levels that extra level of flavour. Doom Spears add some spice to the standard homing attack chains you do in 3D Sonic levels, Doom Blast is really fun to use and opens up new pathways, Chaos Control is AWESOME!!! I LOVE HOW IF YOU USE IT AT THE RIGHT TIME IT OPENS UP COOL PATHS!! MY JAW DROPPED MULTIPLE TIMES SEEING THE PATHWAYS THAT I FOUND FOR MYSELF WITH CHAOS CONTROL!!! Doom Surf is fun to use and it spices up Kingdom Valley a lot, but... Doom Morph? The squid? THAT ONE SUCKKKSSSS!!! Awful turning, awful speed control, awful jump arc that makes Super Mario Bros. from the NES look like a top tier platformer, they don't properly explain the grappling mechanic which left me feeling so frustrated at certain points.
And... of course... The Doom Wings...
THE DOOM WINGS.... THE STUFF YOU COULD BREAK WITH THEM AND THE LEVEL DESIGN ACCOMINDATES FOR THEM TOO?!?!? SO IT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE YOUR GLITCHING THE GAME?!?!? SONIC TEAM DID SUCH A GOOD JOB OH MY GOD!!!!
Now, let's talk about the bosses...
Bosses are pretty fun!! They feel very satisfying to beat down and have some awesome dialogue. Although they are kind of one note, like the strategy to beat them doesn't REALLYYY change but hey, It's Sonic bosses, they've never been that amazing since the beginning of the franchise. But i would rather take this kind of boss design OVER SONIC SUPERSTARS!! BLEHHH!!!
Also I'm not gonna go too much into it but what they did with Mephiles, story wise for his boss fight? Oh man, I LOVE IT!! THEY DID SUCH A GOOD JOB! (the new VA for him, Robbie Daymond was kinda.... okayyy. Needed to sound deeper and it would been damn great. I know he played Akechi from Persona 5, he just needed better direction.)
Alright.. Let's discuss arguably the most important part of any Sonic game, the music, and um, I'm gonna be for real, it's kind of a mixed bag? DON'T GET ME WRONG!! There are some bangers, some top tier tracks that will get that blood pumping! But for every banger, there's a Space Colony Ark Act 2 and a Chaos Island Act 1....
The music can be summed up with this handy chart!
I wanna quickly brush upon the challenge acts too, i liked most of them but having to complete 4 OF THEM FOR EACH ZONE TO ADVANCE THE STORY IS SOME MASSIVE PADDING!!!
And.. I think that is it!! Overall, Shadow Generations is great!! The story has some cool moments but it felt VERY underbaked, the level design has improved a lot from previous games, i like the white space and the simple enjoyment of going around and collecting things.
It is a good to great game but it definitely has some flaws and i wouldn't give it a 9/10 and say it's PEAK overall like what some are saying online. Yeah it's good, but, it has flaws. It isn't perfect, however it is VERYYY fun!
Shadow Generations really does give me hope, this isn't yet another "step in the right direction" no. This is a LEAP!

Magical girl ramblings of the day: GUSHING OVER MAGICAL GIRLS
I think it’s the best time to bring this manga series up considering it’s getting an anime adaption next year.
First and foremost I’d like to clarify that I don think anyone should watch this anime when it comes out, or even slightly support it.
Now onto what the manga is about; it’s about a girl who’s super into the Tres Magia, a trio of pastel magical girls who fight the forces of evil. She gets confronted by a creature who asks if she’d like to be like them too, which she eagerly agrees before transforming into a bdsm based outfit, and being declared on the enemy side.
I went into this manga knowing purely it had Yuri, and I thought that was interesting and the designs and magic system seemed cute before I was jumpscared with bdsm. To be frank, nsfw mangas are okay but not when they involve children. It gets worse when they get a 8 year old on the enemy team, and they proclaim her as dirtier than the rest of them, with her powers also being bdsm based.
That’s when I dropped the manga. I tried pursuing through it so I could atleast write a good review on it, but I couldn’t continue once the 8 year old was brought into the picture. I’m disgusted that this manga is getting an anime adaption but then again, Miss Kobayashis Dragon Maid got one too. It’s sad that we keep getting anime adaptations of blatant ch***p**n.
I only wanted to make this post because I don’t think a lot of people understand just how horrific this anime will be, if based on the manga. It’s not cute, it’s not good Yuri. If you want something cute with good Yuri in the magical girl franchise, I beg you to seek other media. Such as Madoka Magica, Magical Girl Raising Project, Sailor Moon, and so much more.

Hot Wheels: Let's Race - Season 2 Thoughts
Season 2 has been out for a few days now, and I've watched every episode at least once through, so I'm finally going through all of my thoughts on the show, what's going on, and what I think is going to happen next. The joy of serialized kids shows!
Everything will be under the cut, just in case. Spoiler alert for all of season two!
First off- we're finally introduced formally to our "mystery racer"- Cruise! She's the daughter of the villain of the first season, Professor Rearview, and a racer in her own right. I have to say, I think her character design is very clever, having the shape of her pigtails match Professor Rearview's big hair! i know some people may not like that Cruise is his daughter, as opposed to a grandchild or niece, but I think that the fact of her being a direct descendant makes more sense for the story they're telling. That and there's fun to be had with Professor Rearview being an evil dad.
Cruise is undeniably the highlight of the season for me, and my new favorite. I enjoy the angle of the racers having a non-camper opponent, as the lack of constant close proximity, or down-time with one another means they don't have to be cordial or polite towards Cruise, and we see a lot of more intense emotions fester as a result- especially on Coop's end.
I also think in general, Coop as a character works much better in this season. The pre-established motivation, plus his new outstanding title as the camp champ are threatened directly by Cruise, as he is her primary target to beat, and the determination and vigor it brings out in him is very entertaining to watch.
The rest of the racers sadly don't fare as well, as it feels like they take more of a backseat when compared to season 1, outside of a character focus episode. This feels especially apparent with Axle, who has gone from his role as the main rival, to being good-aligned all of the time. His personality is still intact, but It feels very odd to see him so reduced in role, as the show doesn't frame him as a threat to Cruise also- despite the fact he is probably the only racer outside of Coop who could pose such a threat. The rest of the cast seem much more competitive when Cruise is not in the picture, but once she is, the show relegates them back to supporting roles. Considering the show's age demographic and the story it wants to tell, this isn't a huge problem, but nonetheless a little sad to see.
We also get a bit of backstory for Dash and Professor Rearview! I'm surprised to see they're the same age- either Dash has aged really well, or Professor Rearview has aged terribly. It's interesting to see they were campers at the same time. Were they friends? The amount of team-strengthening exercises that Dash has her own campers do is re-contextualized by this reveal- is she trying to prevent a repeat of what became of Rearview by making sure they do actually like eachother and get along, meaning the jealousy that comes with losing is minimal, or reduced because they can feel good for the person who does win because they are friends?
The environment that Dash and Rearview were in was clearly far more competitive and unforgiving. Of course, we can't pin it all on just that, as Professor Rearview's coping mechanism and overreaction to his loss is his own fault. Explanations, not excuses. And carrying this grudge for at least 30 years, it has long passed being something to be blamed on the conditions of the environment.
I'd love to see a flashback episode regarding their time at the Ultimate Garage honestly! Who were the other four campers who they trained alongside? I'd like to think maybe Axle's dad, Striker, was one of them. Seeing the exact conditions of the race would certainly help to clarify as much. Not to mention, they already have the 3D models for young Dash and Rearview...
One thing that was made clear by the episode count, and the season ending about half-way through the level 2 arc is that season 2 has been split in half, and the season 3 we're to get is really the second half of season 2. Which means more time to dwell on what we've gotten, and who will be the winner of the Ultimate Garage. There's also the question of whether the show will redeem Cruise, and have her join the side of good. I personally am conflicted? It would be interesting, and makes sense, but we are also yet to see any desire to change- let alone Cruise's own motivation and feelings towards her father's plans.
One thing I wish we had seen was a slower moment between Cruise and someone else, particularly any of the racers! I think the show would have it be Coop, as he is our main character, and I don't really have an issue with such. Season 1 gave us a whole episode where he was made to work with Axle, and it gave us a better insight into his character, motivation, and storyline. I think an episode like this with Cruise, under a circumstance that suits their storyline and characters better, would work wonders. Cruise clearly LIKES to race, and yet she is willing to help her father win it in order to destroy it? There's the general question of why Professor Rearview would even allow his daughter to be a racer, but considering he was a former racer, I suppose it would be a waste to not pass on those skills. Is Cruise of the belief that her father will spare her car, and allow her to keep racing? I want to see Cruise forced to talk to someone so that we get these answers.
As mentioned in a prior post, I have two theories regarding the next season's end, the winner of the Ultimate Garage, and the events that could follow. These are both hypotheticals in which Cruise does get a redemption arc, so both of these could very easily be wrong, and Cruise could remain evil, which still would be fun to see.
Option 1: Coop wins the Ultimate Garage. Coop manages to catch up in flame badges to Cruise, leaving the final race as to being between the both of them. Coop ends up winning the big race, much to the delight of the other camp racers, Dash, and his father. However, this victory does not stop Professor Rearview, and he puts his plan into motion to destroy the Ultimate Garage anyways. The campers and Dash all band together to stop him, but It's not enough. All hope seems lost, and there is a moment between Professor Rearview and Cruise where Cruise comes to the realization that their plan working means she will never race again, and lashing out in anger to get a victory that destroys the rich car culture of the city, and takes away something she loves, is just not worth it. She'd rather race again and get a chance to prove herself and improve, rather go down as a sore loser. Using her knowledge of her father, her car's unique abilities, and a little encouragement from Coop and the other campers, Cruise helps to stop his plan. After his defeat, Coop invites the other racers to continue staying with him at the Ultimate Garage, wanting them all to continue improving together. He also ends up extending the invite to Cruise, considering that now she has no place to go, as she's betrayed her father, and now that she's "good".
Option 2: Cruise wins the Ultimate Garage. Despite the campers' best efforts to beat her, Cruise still ends up winning out, and is rewarded with the ownership of the Ultimate Garage, much to the despair of everyone else. She excitedly shares the news with her Father, who is excited to begin the plans to destroy the whole thing. However, Cruise is starting to have doubts. She has all of these amazing cars and resources at her fingertips now, and she can use these to become an even better racer! She tries to convince her father that maybe they don't have to destroy everything, and can keep some of it intact, but he is not having any of that. He's looked forward to this for years! Realizing that he won't listen, Cruise instead asks for help from the campers, admitting that she was wrong, and needs their help now to stop Professor Rearview. Reluctantly, they choose to believe and trust her, and foil the plans with their racing skills. Once he is stopped, Cruise attempts to hand back over ownership of the garage, but the others insist she keep it. They come to a compromise- they'll share. After all, there's a lot they can all still learn from one another, as people and as racers.
Thanks for reading all of the way through! What are your thoughts on the new season, and your theories, if you have any ! I'd love to hear what everyone has to say!

ARC reviewers wanted!
Please reblog if you know any avid readers who frequently review books online! Especially if they enjoy novels containing: - fae - witches - angst-free queerness - romance - a cozy noblebright mood even amid magical disaster - '90s cover bands I seek reviewers and general word-of-mouth-spreaders for my novel Ballad for Jasmine Town, which contains all of the above. (As to the romance and queerness, the main couple is a trans man and a bi woman, in case you prefer to know such details.) It can be requested on NetGalley and Edelweiss right now, or I could email you an ARC in PDF or epub format.
Here is the publisher page if you’d like to read more about it. (Though distributed by Simon & Schuster, the book is independent-press-published. The publishing world is complicated.) For those who've read Lava Red Feather Blue: it takes place in the same country and has some overlapping events, but you don't have to read one book to make sense of the other. They are both stand-alones. Thank you in advance, and I hope it finds some happy readers!

!!!NEW REVIEW!!!
the first Looney Tune of the 1941-1942 season is one of the LT shorts i personally have the most opinions and theories and feelings on out of the entire run—a very promising start to a very promising season!
perhaps best known for its own remake, 1948’s Back Alley Oproar starring Sylvester and Elmer Fudd, Notes to You is a hidden gem of musical timing, behavioral comedy, empathetic portrayal of characters, immersive storytelling, dubious directing to keep the audience guessing, and perhaps the bearer of the darkest ending to any Looney Tune. all high praise for such a seemingly innocuous short about Porky’s plans to get a good’s night sleep being repeatedly violated by a cat with an insatiable itch for music—and heckling.
#*WIPES MY BROW* this may be a consequence of trying so hard to get myself into Porky’s mindset to study this but this one took it out of me#in a VERY good way. posting late and busted my ass on this one so i may reblog again tomorrow to ensure it gets a little traction because it#deserves it! i’m really adamant about turning people onto this cartoon. please watch it#lt#notes to you#freleng#reviews#looney tunes

obscure things i think are very very underrated, part 1:
one: _.iCEY_ (9.99/10). basically megaman x pony island x the stanley parable x portal. ost was great, gameplay was awesome and easy to use, despite the easily adaptable controls the enemies were still hard, once you get used to the gameplay you can focus on the story which is nice. my only takeback is the fact that i had to use a guide to figure out which order to do things in since it was kind of confusing at times. overall amazing game.
two: The Final Battle of Geometry Dash series (8.5/10). cringe was immaculate [/pos]. amazing series and original concepts, however some of the storylines tend to be the same/repeated. no takebacks for grammar issues, as english isn't PhoeniX and rmr24HD's first language. the order in which you need to watch the series is convoluted for anyone who watched after 2020, however i've made a google doc to order them. (happy watching!)
three: The Heroic Six (>5/10). no episodes have come out at the time of writing this (may 18/2024), however there have been several shorts, trailers and other sneak peaks. to sum it up, it's basically My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic meets Cookie Run. which is a cool concept in and of itself, and i can't wait to see where it goes!
four: Epithet Erased (9.45/10). a D&D campaign where everyone needs therapy. not only are all the main characters Epithet-users, they're also more neurodivergent than a goddamn rainbow infinity symbol. voice acting is awesome, the animation takes a bit to get used to but it works really well with the theme, humor is good too (sylvie is peak, imo).

Chapter 11 - Uthgerd III: Bleak Falls Barrow
Middas, 20th of Last Seed 4E201 Afternoon
Uthgerd
"Any ideas?"
Talao ducks back behind our overlook of the entrance to Bleak Falls Barrow, where four bandits stand on guard. If their associates from the outpost down the mountain were anything to go by, they wouldn't be much trouble, but for their superior numbers.
"A few," he says. "Surprise will be to our advantage here. So try not to go yelling at them first this time."
I grimace, despite his neutral tone. The bandits at the outpost hadn't attacked us, but when one had called me a mud-crab lover as we left... Well, I suppose I was lucky there had been only one unseen bandit. I can still feel the sting in my side from the mace blow, despite my steel plate armour. "Of course. They're likely on alert in the first place, and we won't be able to approach too closely.
"Can we wait for nightfall?"
"Not possible. There's a storm on the way, within the next hour." In truth, probably sooner. The air is already more bitterly cold than it was just an hour ago. The sky is completely covered by dark, flat clouds, and the wind is picking up. "We need to be inside that barrow before it hits."
Talao crosses his arms, a thoughtful look on his face. "We can't go 'round the other side, thanks to that cliff, and they've two guards watching the path. Do you think the brush will cover us long enough to get within bow range?"
Another peek over the ridge. "If they aren't focused on it, yes. If I can make it to that tree, I'll have enough cover to draw.
Talao nods. "Likely our best choice. The guard overlooking the valley is isolated, and if you're lucky, his death won't alert the other three."
"Aye, if I'm lucky. I'd prefer another bow-hand rather than relying on luck." Blast, my mouth got away from me again. I don't really blame him, but it's frustrating enough.
"The only strings I've plucked are instruments', as I've told you before," he responds crossly. "My hands create art, not violence."
I notice snowflakes drifting into my vision. Damn. "No time. We can figure out how you've not died yet later, but it's now or never. Wait here; I don't need you getting in the way." And before he can reply, I slip over the ridge and slide into the sparse brush along the path. The coming winter has killed most of the foliage, but these shrubs stubbornly hang on to their leaves. No movement from the path guards, thankfully. They seem to be looking out on the plains, to the oncoming storm. My armour blends in a bit with the rocks as well, which helps.
The tree, when I reach it, is near a hundred yards from the guard, at my estimate. Not terribly far, but nothing to scoff at. I stand, nocking a steel arrow on my Orcish bow. Cost me quite a few Septims, but worth every one. I keep a second arrow held between my fingers as well, for quicker access. Two is all the time I'll get. The wind hasn't picked up yet, but there's a small steady breeze coming from the plains. I adjust my aim. The bandits are all wearing fur, so I go for a safe body shot.
Inhale. Pull.
Hold. Steady.
Exhale. Release.
The arrow is thrown through the air, and my second is nocked even before the first reaches its target. It lands true, punching deep into the bandit's chest, and he collapses without a sound. I quickly set up my second shot for the closest guard, before any of them notice. Just as I let it fly, I feel a slight gust, and curse as the arrow moves from its path, striking the guard in his left arm.
His screams of pain are clear over the wind, and I duck behind the tree once again. Is it worth drawing another arrow, or do I charge now? They're sure to know my general position now, but three on one odds are not easy to go against, however unskilled they might be. The longer I stall, the more organized they'll be, so I decide to drop the bow and charge the guards before they can rally.
I've always wondered what goes through the minds of bandits when they see a Nord woman as tall as they, sprinting at them in full plate armour, greatsword waving above. The first always seems surprised more than anything. This one is no different. The yards disappear and I finish the job my arrow started, driving my blade into the injured guard's gut before he can draw his weapon. He falls to the ground, silenced, and I move on.
Two left.
The last have finally drawn their weapons, though too late to save their fellow. They're also smart enough to approach me spread out so that I can't move them into each others' paths. No matter. Before they can attack, I shout a battle-cry, swinging at the guard on my right. Despite their shock and fear, he manages to deflect the cut with his own sword, though the force drives him to a knee. I send him sprawling back with a kick to the chest, turning just in time to parry a cut from the other guard's axe. I take the momentum into a downward cut, hoping to cleave off his arm, which he blocks with his shield. Surprisingly, both he and the shield hold steady, and he scores a solid hit to my already injured side. I lose my breath, pain shooting through my side, but I can tell the armor has held strong. I feint to his side, then flip my sword around his guard and thrust the tip through his neck.
The second always dies with fire in their eyes, cocky in the face of danger.
A shout from behind draws my attention back to the other guard I'd been fighting. I manage to dodge a wild thrust from his blade, but he tackles me, and I lose hold on my blade as he forces me to the ground. Still unrecovered from my last injury, losing my breath again so quickly after the last, I struggle to take in any breath at all, stars dancing in my vision. The bandit rips off my helmet somehow, or maybe it fell off from the impact on the stone ground, and he punches me in the face once, twice, sword seemingly forgotten, and I can see the terror in his eyes as I grab his forearm to stop him, even though I can't gain any leverage against him. Suddenly his free hand is on my throat and I still can't breathe, my vision is going black from the edge, and my ears sound filled with cotton, so I can faintly hear a shout, as the bandit looks up and then a dagger is sticking out of his eye
All at once I can hear and see and feel pain again. I yank the dagger out of his eye, and plunge it under his arm where I know his heart lies, and then the world is blessedly silent again but for the ragged gasps of my own breathing.
The last one always dies in fear, a coward to the end.
"Uthgerd! Uthgerd! Are you alright?!" Gods, that bloody bard will be the death of me, I can tell.
"I'll... I'll live," I gasp. He appears in my vision, offering an arm up. I wave it off and sit up, a wave of curses rolling off my tongue that would've had me over my mother's knee for the rest of my life. Okay, pain. Where? Side, obviously. That needs some attention right away. Throat, sore, will bruise terribly, but not life-threatening. Face, couple of knocks. Some blood from my mouth. I spit. Shit, there goes another tooth. That makes... Three now? Well, I've had worse scraps.
Talao is kneeling over the dead bandit by my side, and the details of the fight click in my head. "Did you throw that dagger?"
He starts, as though I'd interrupted some deep thought. "I... Yes, I did." He acts even more surprised than I feel, as if he doesn't believe it himself.
"Well... Damned fine aim there, I guess. Suppose you aren't useless in a fight after all." Slightly less useless, at least.
"But... No, I didn't mean to... I was only trying to distract him, not... It was an accident."
"Accident or not... You saved my life, Talao. For that, I'm grateful."
He perks up at this. "Yes, you're right. He wouldn't have hesitated to kill us both." A pause, the wind echoing around us, slightly muted by the towering entrance of the barrow. "Do you suppose they're here for the same reason as us? The artifact?"
I struggle to remember what Talao had told me about the treasure - bit difficult to think at the moment - the "Dragonstone." "A map of ancient dragon burial grounds? Highly doubtful, I should think. They aren't after something with no clear value like that. I imagine only the Jarl's wizard knows anything about it, let alone have any interest in it. They'd be after burial tributes. Gold and valuable buried with the deceased."
"Then why post so many guards? It's like they expected people to follow them... Perhaps there's some other treasure down there?"
Hmm. It's an interesting idea. But the light is quickly dying as the storm picks up. "We can discuss this further inside if we need to. Right now we need to take shelter."
"Right," Talao replies. "I'll grab the packs and your bow, and meet you at the door." I stand, grunting, as he heads back toward the ridge. I look out toward the plains of Whiterun Hold. On any other day, the sight would have been beautiful, but the oncoming storm robbed the vision of anything but dread. I've never really thought of the weather as anything great than that, or the influence of Kyne upon Nirn, but I can't help but feel as if this is a terrible sign - of terrible things to come. A herald of truly dark times.
