Thoughts and prayers the current speaker at my work's conference is talking about the ethics of using "AI" in a legal context and she has gotten to the point of describing search engines as AI, claiming that AI programs can reason, and asserting that it is "unquestioned" that AI increases efficiency and consistency send help I am going to explode
#woolly rambles#please i need only software engineers to talk about these programs please please#particularly the software engineers that know multiple coding languages and arent under the illusion that software is demon magic#“it simulates human intelligence” it literally does not

Physics Friday #5: The Wonderful World of Programming Paradigms
Welcome to the first actual post on the dedicated blog! This will be continuing on from what I started over on my main account @oliviax727. But don't worry, I'll still repost this post over there.
Preamble: Wait! I thought this was Physics!
Education level: Primary School (Y5/6)
Topic: Computer Languages (Comp Sci)
So you may be thinking how this is relevant to physics, well it's not. But really, other adjacent fields: computer science, chemistry, science history, mathematics etc. Are really important to physics! The skills inform and help physicists make informed decisions on how to analyse theoretical frameworks, or to how physics can help inform other sciences.
I may do a bigger picture post relating to each science or the ways in which we marry different subjects to eachother, but what is important is that some knowledge of computer science is important when learning physics, or that you're bound to learn some CS along the way.
Also I can do what I want, bitch.
Introduction: What is a Programming Language?
You may have come across the term 'programming paradigm' - especially in computer science/software engineering classes. But what is a programming paradigm really?
Computers are very powerful things, and they can do quite a lot. Computers are also really dumb. They can't do anything unless if we tell them what to do.
So until our Sky-net machine overlords take control and start time-travelling to the past, we need to come up with ways to tell them how to do things.
Pure computer speak is in electrical signals corresponding to on and off. Whereas human speak is full of sounds and text.
It is possible for either one to understand the other (humans can pump electrical signals into a device and computers can language model). But we clearly need something better.
This is where a programming language comes in. It's basically a language that both the computer and the human understands. So we need a common language to talk to them.
It's like having two people. One speaks Mandarin, the other speaks English. So instead of making one person learn the other's language, we create a common language that the two of them can speak. This common language is a synthesis of both base languages.
But once we have an idea of how to communicate with the computer, we need to consider how we're going to talk to it:
How are we going to tell it to do things?
What are we going to ask it to do?
How will we organise and structure our common language?
This is where a programming paradigm comes in - a paradigm is a set of ideas surrounding how we should communicate with a device. It's really something that can truly only be understood by showing examples of paradigms.
Imperative vs. Declarative
The main two paradigms, or really categories of paradigms, are the imperative vs. declarative paradigm.
Imperative programming languages are quite simple: code is simply a set of instructions meant to tell the computer specifically what to do. It is about process, a series of steps the computer can follow to get some result.
Declarative programming languages are a bit more vapid: code is about getting what you want. It's less about how you get there and more about what you want at the end.
As you can see imperative programs tell the computer how to do something whereas declarative programs are about what you want out.
Here's an example of how an imperative language may find a specific name in a table of company data:
GET tableOfEmployees; GET nameToFind SET i = 0; WHILE i < tableOfEmployees.length: IF tableOfEmployees[i].firstName == nameToFind THEN: RETURN tableOfEmployees[i] AND i; ELSE: i = i + 1; RETURN "employee does not exist";
And here's that same attempt but in a declarative language:
FROM tableOfEmployees SELECT * WHERE firstName == INPUT(1);
Note that these languages aren't necessarily real languages, just based on real-life ones. Also please ignore the fact I used arrays of structures and databases in exactly the same way.
We can see the difference between the two paradigms a lot more clearly now. In the imperative paradigm, every step is laid out clear as day. "Add one to this number, check if this number is equal to that one".
Under the declarative paradigm, not only is the text shorter, we also put all of the instructions about how to do a task under the rug, we only care about what we want.
With all this, we can see an emerging spectrum of computer paradigms. From languages that are more computer-like, to languages that are more English-like. This is the programming languages' level:
Lower level languages are more likely to be imperative, as the fundamental construction of the computer relies on a series of instructions to be executed in order.
The lowest level, the series of electrical signals and circuitry called microcode is purely imperative in a sense, as everything is an instruction. Nothing is abstracted and everything is reduced to it's individual components.
The highest level, is effectively English. It's nothing but "I want this", "I'd like that". All of the processes involved are abstracted in favour of just the goal. It is all declarative.
In the middle we have most programming languages, what's known as the "high level languages". They are the best balance of abstraction of reduction, based on what you need to use the language for.
It's important that we also notice that increasingly higher-level and increasingly more declarative the language gets, the more specific the purpose of the language becomes.
Microcode and machine code can be used for effectively any purpose, they are the jack-of-all trades. Whereas something like SQL is really good at databases, but I wouldn't use it for game design.
As long as a language is Turing-complete, it can do anything any computer can do, what's important is how easy it is to program the diverse range of use-cases. Assembly can do literally anything, but it's an effort to program. Python can do the same, but it's an effort to run.
Imperative Paradigms: From the Transistor to the Website
As mentioned previously, the imperative paradigm is less a stand-alone paradigm but a group of paradigms. Much like how the UK is a country, but is also a collection of countries.
There are many ways in order to design imperative languages, for example, a simple imperative language from the 80's may look a lot like assembly:
... ADD r1, 1011 JMZ F313, r1
The last statement JMZ, corresponds to a "Jump to the instruction located at A if the value located at B is equal to zero" what it's effectively saying is a "Repeat step 4" or "Go to question 5" type of thing.
Also known as goto statements, these things are incredibly practical for computers, because all it requires is moving some electrical signals around the Registers/RAM.
But what goto statement is used as in code, is really just a glorified "if x then y". Additionally, these statements get really irritating when you want to repeat or recurse over instructions multiple times.
The Structured Paradigm
Thus we introduce the structured paradigm, which simply allows for control structures. A control structure is something that, controls the flow of the programs' instructions.
Control structures come in many forms:
Conditionals (If X then do Y otherwise do Z)
Multi-selects (If X1 then do Y1, if X2 then do Y2 ...)
Post-checked loops (Do X until Y happens)
Pre-checked loops (While Y, do X)
Counted Loops (For i = A to B do X)
Mapped Loops (For each X in Y, do Z)
These control structures are extra useful, as they have the added benefit of not having to specify what line you have to jump to every time you update previous instructions. They may also include more "safe" structures like the counted or mapped loop, which only executes a set amount of time.
But we still have an issue: all our code is stuffed into one file and it's everywhere, we have no way to seperate instructions into their own little components that we might want to execute multiple times. Currently, out only solution is to either nest things in far too many statements or use goto statements.
The Procedural Paradigm
What helps is the use of a procedure. Procedures are little blocks of code that can be called as many times as needed. They can often take many other names: commands, functions, processes, branches, methods, routines, subroutines, etc.
Procedures help to organise code for both repeated use and also it makes it easier to read. We can set an operating standard of "one task per subroutine" to help compartmentalise code.
Object-Oriented Code
Most of these basic programming languages, especially the more basic ones, include the use of data structures. Blocks of information that holds multiple types of information:
STRUCT Person: Name: String Age: Integer Phone: String Gender: String IsAlive: Boolean
But these structures often feel a bit empty. After all, we may want to have a specific process associated uniquely with that person.
We want to compartmentalise certain procedures and intrinsically tie them to an associated structure, preventing their use from other areas of the code.
Like "ChangeGender" is something we might not want to apply to something that doesn't have a gender, like a table.
We may also want to have structures that are similar to 'Person' but have a few extra properties like "Adult" may have a bank account or something.
What we're thinking of doing is constructing an object, a collection of BOTH attributes (variables) AND methods (procedures) associated with the object. We can also create new objects which inherit the properties of others.
Object oriented programming has been the industry standard for decades now, and it's incredibly clear as to why - it's rather useful! But as time marches forward, we've seen the popularisation of a new paradigm worthy of rivaling this one ...
Declarative Paradigms: The World of Logic
Declarative languages certainly help abstract a lot of information, but that's not always the case, sometimes the most well known declarative languages are very similar feature-wise to imperative paradigms. It's just a slight difference in focus which is important.
Functional Programming Languages
Whereas the object oriented language treats everything, or most things, like objects. A functional language uses functions as it's fundamental building block.
Functional languages rely on the operation of, well, functions. But functions of a specific kind - pure functions. A pure function is simply something that doesn't affect other parts of the computer outside of specifically itself.
A pure function is effectively read-only in it's operation - strictly read-only. The most practical-for-common-use functional languages often allow for a mixture of pure and impure functions.
A functional language is declarative because of the nature of a function - the process of how things work are abstracted away for a simple input -> output model. And with functional purity, you don't have to worry about if what takes the input to the output also affects other things on the computer.
Functional languages have been around for quite a while, however they've been relegated to the world of academia. Languages like Haskell and Lisp are, like most declarative languages, very restrictive in their general application. However in recent years, the use of functional programming has come quite common.
I may make a more opinionated piece in the future on the merits of combining both functional and object-oriented languages, and also a seperate my opinions on a particular functional language Haskell - which I have some contentions with.
Facts and Logic
The logic paradigm is another special mention of declarative languages, they focus on setting a series of facts (i.e. true statements):
[Billy] is a [Person]
Rules (i.e. true statements with generality):
If [A] is [Person] then [A] has a [Brain]
And Queries:
Does [Billy] have a [Brain]?
Logical languages have a lot more of a specific purpose, meant for, well, deductive/abductive logical modelling.
We can also use what's known as Fuzzy logic which is even more higher-level, relying on logic that is inductive or probabilistic, i.e. conclusions don't necessarily follow from the statements.
Visual and Documentation Languages
At some point, we start getting so high level, that the very components of the language start turning into something else.
You may have used a visual language before, for example, Scratch. Scratch is a declarative language that abstracts away instructions in-favour of visual blocks that represent certain tasks a computer can carry out.
Documentation languages like HTML, Markdown, CSS, XML, YML, etc. Are languages that can barely even be considered programming languages. Instead, they are methods of editing documents and storing text-based data.
Languages that don't even compile (without any significant effort)
At some point, we reach a point where languages don't even compile necessarily.
A metalanguage, is a language that describes language. Like EBNF, which is meant to describe the syntaxing and lexical structures of lower-level languages. Metalanguages can actually compile, and are often used in code editors for grammar checking.
Pseudocode can often be described as either imperative or declarative, focused on emulating programs in words. What you saw in previous sections are pseudocode.
Diagrams fall in this category too, as they describe the operation of a computer program without actually being used to run a computer.
Eventually we reach the point where what were doing is effectively giving instructions or requesting things in English. For this, we require AI modelling for a computer to even begin to interpret what we want it to interpret.
Esoteric Paradigms
Some paradigms happen to not really fall in this range form low to high level. Because they either don't apply to digital computing or exist in the purely theoretical realm.
Languages at the boundaries of the scale can fall into these classes, as microcode isn't really a language if it's all physical. And pseudocode isn't really a language if it doesn't even compile.
There are also the real theoretical models like automata and Turing machine code, which corresponds to simplified, idealised, and hypothetical machines that operate in ways analogous to computers.
Shells and commands also exist in this weird zone. Languages like bash, zsh, or powershell which operate as a set of command instructions you feed the computer to do specific things. They exist in the region blurred between imperative and declarative at the dead centre of the scale. But often their purpose is more used as a means to control a computer's operating system than anything else.
Lastly, we have the languages which don't fit in our neat diagram because they don't use digital computers in a traditional manner. These languages often take hold of the frontiers of computation:
Parallel Computing
Analog Computing
Quantum Computing
Mechanical Computing
Conclusion
In summary, there's a lot of different ways you can talk to computers! A very diverse range of paradigms and levels that operate in their own unique ways. Of course, I only covered the main paradigms, the ones most programmers are experienced in. And I barely scratched the surface of even the most popular paradigms.
Regardless, this write-up was long as well. I really wish I could find a way to shorten these posts without removing information I want to include. I guess that just comes with time. This is the first computer science based topic. Of course, like any programmer, I have strong opinions over the benefits of certain paradigms and languages. So hopefully I didn't let opinions get in the way of explanations.
Feedback is absolutely appreciated! And please, if you like what you see, consider following either @oliviabutsmart or @oliviax727!
Next week, I'll finish off our three-part series on dark matter and dark energy with a discussion of what dark energy does, and what we think it is made of!

autism machine brain
some random thoughts. disclaimer I am between levels 1-2 and have generally low support needs. please do not take my personal experiences as written to describe the whole community!! if others have similar experiences to me, maybe with different words, feel free to share them. it’d be interesting to hear from people all around the spectrum. but do not take my words and use them to talk over others who are not me.
this is mostly about ideas of what is seen as ableist in the community and how it pertains to how I like to identify and describe myself. there’s a stereotype that is seen as ableist, that (usually low support needs) autistic people are like robots. honestly, I feel like one, and it comforts me to identify with them, as I feel like my brain operates and processes language/actions etc like one. specifically, a slow, old family computer.
I call myself slow, which may be seen as ableist language, because I am slow. Maybe due to catatonia (I think that’s the right word?) and like. cognitive stuff? like how it’s kind of hard to like. comprehend and process things unless they are perfectly laid out for me. it is not unlike writing lines of code. if the line of code is not written perfectly into my brain engine, I will freeze up and be unable to complete the action properly. Ive gotten better about this as I’ve gotten older, but I still usually need to be told the exact details of how to do a lot of complicated things, like schoolwork, especially math.
there are just simply too many steps and possibilities. I get overwhelmed and don’t know where to start, as there is too much room for error. even as I try to fill in the blanks and infer what I am meant to do based on what I know, it is simply too much of a risk to attempt something I understand so little. my brain short circuits and blue screens, and I end up sitting, staring at my task and thinking of nothing. this is not ideal for school!! but it is so hard to ask for help, because I feel stupid and disruptive. other kids just run on a newer and faster operating system than me. i am simply behind on software updates.
a big part of my experience as autistic is having an incredibly hard time figuring out how to do or even comprehend things that are new to me, foreign to me, too complicated and large for my mind to run efficiently. I don’t even really know if I’m explaining this properly. At this very moment I am scraping through those lines of code, looking for errors. I very much have a hard time deviating from my “comfort zone”, things that I have already been doing and repeating. repetition is comforting to me. I have already run these programs countless times, and they are proven to work.
My robot brain is my explanation as to why I have trouble improving my art, why I have struggle with disordered eating, why I sound so dry while texting and so awkward while talking. i need the steps broken down for me in such a specific way that is simply not possible most of the time if I want to understand how to do something new or in a new way. for example, I draw the same things over and over, and as such, I do not improve. need to learn fundamentals like lighting, space, form color etc. but attempting such a task is so very daunting. what if I do it wrong? what if I crash? where do I start? Or I try to make something for myself to eat. What if I ruin the dish? There are ingredients in this dish that are not proven to be edible by me. This is cooked in a way that may not be able to run on my operating system. Corrupted code, threatening to break the program. Instead of eating something otherwise healthy and nutritious, I may choose the same, simple food, or not eat altogether.
I am rather verbose, having collected many evocative words over the years, but when there is a concept that I have not attempted to explain before or must explain in a new way, my brain struggles to put it together. a jigsaw puzzle can only be put together successfully in one way. I am not a creative person. I cannot find new and creative ways to complete the puzzle. all I can do is put it together in the same way each time. I often upset people when texting with them, as I use the same responses, same wording, same punctuation etc over and over. To them, they may feel like I am simply uninterested or bored with the conversation. Texting can be stressful because I must rearrange the puzzle in a different way over and over as to not make the person feel ignored. It must hurt to see someone reply with the same mannerisms and phrases each time you speak to them.
I have compared myself to a generative ai before. That may be what I am, but I don’t think I am a very good generative ai. I am more like a factory machine being made to run the software of a generative ai. A machine that has been putting cars together over and over is suddenly asked to create a picture. it is so very strange to be an artist in this state!! again, I do not consider myself a creative person!! it is a lot of the reason I see my work as lacking the same spark and life to it as others work does. they can imagine all sorts of ways to create, all I can do is haphazardly rip apart what I already know, put it back together, run the program and hope it works.
I do love to learn. I do love to scrape and compile new words, new techniques, new food, new tasks to update my software. this is why I have low support needs, as over time I have been slowly integrating more and more features into my program. but it is still overwhelming and disheartening to see my classmates diligently working on an assignment that I rainbow wheeled through the too fast, too complicated explanation of, or see another artist younger than me create beautiful work using techniques that threaten to crash my brain trying to deconstruct, or eating something that I wish to try, but may threaten to poison my code.
I don’t want to be a factory machine, assembling the same parts over and over. I want to be a person, capable of creativity and confidence and working around error and operating smoothly without freezing or shutting down or overheating all the time, needing long cooldown periods, time spent laying in bed doing nothing when I could be lending my time to be productive and do things I want to do. but since I don’t have any other words to describe my experience, it is a comfort to at least be able to name the feeling in a way that others may be able to understand. saying you function like a vintage IBM on dial up also sounds better than saying you’re developmentally retarded.
or maybe my attention span will get better if I get off that damn phone amirite LOLOLOL
but sorry if this was incomprehensible. I feel like it was.

I was gonna leave it in the tags but this touches on a special interest and a particular Hill I Will Continue To Die On so I want it said (particularly for peeps that are less Aware): With the advent of more and more powerful gaming hardware that you don't ultimately need to use nearly as much of the hardware's power to get a stunning and gigantic AAA experience, and the rise of one-size-fits-all game engines like Unity and Unreal giving ultimately less control over the backend of your game to cut the costs of developing your own proprietary engine, AAA gaming corporations have gotten EXTREMELY comfortable cutting costs because you don't NEED to optimize every pixel of your game :) Not to mention ALL OF THE POINTS in the tags listed above because the tags above are SO GODDAMN right. And that's not getting me started on the culture that's formed around constantly pushing games that are BIGGER, FLASHIER, and MORE BEAUTIFUL with MORE CONTENT than the last which exasterbates the issue to the nth degree because that creates more space for things to fall between the cracks. And the Hill I Will Continue To Die On is that this attitude is what causes most ports and even first party nintendo games to run like ass on the switch and why you'll still hear people roast the switch for being dogshit hardware. Because yeah, like everyone above me is saying, weaker hardware just does not get any love. And especially in the case of ports, they never optimized the game properly for their home hardware in the first place and now they have to put it on something running a mobile processor??? And not to say nintendo doesn't put work into optimizing for their own console (they certainly do the best at it for the most part) but they still release games that frequently have optimization issues. My mind falls back to the remaster of Miitopia which would have framerate drops during certain scenes, and that was originally a 3DS game. They easily could have not had that problem. And you know what if you read all of this and you think we're all just being whiney and should REALLY just shill for the biggest beefiest tech and stop being poor, or if you wanna see examples of why this jams a stick this far up my ass please please I implore you to watch GameHut's videos on youtube where he talks about his work and career as a software engineer, or if you want to be pointed more directly at a video, how about a video detailing how he had created a system similar to and arguably more efficient than No Man's Sky's signature seamless loading as early as the PS2, or perhaps the making of Micro Mages, an NES title by Morphcat Games from 2019 where they discuss all of the (super clever!) techniques they had to use to get the game to do what they wanted and still have it run natively on the actual hardware, or how about an interview about the development of Crash Bandicoot for Playstation 1 where they talk about how they literally programmed the game to hack the console to get it to run the way they wanted it to. It's LITERALLY not an exaggeration to say these people used to (and in some cases still do!) bend the laws of physics, and these are only a handful of examples. I promise you, a large swath of AAA titles being released today could very extremely likely run on your phone if they were allowed the time and resources to make the port. Yes, even that one.
we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better
#reblog#thoughts of bard#I'm not even going to get started on how cloud versions of games should die in a hole#that's another rant for another day#sincere apologies if this is Too Much of an addition to the post#I just have so many bones to pick about an industry I've been so excited to enter for my entire life#It's corporate greed all the way down and it's ruining every facet of my favorite medium

The Sequence Chat: Justin D. Harris - About Building Microsoft Copilot
Quick bio
This is your second interview at The Sequence. Please tell us a bit about yourself. Your background, current role and how did you get started in AI?
I grew up in the suburbs of Montreal and I have always been passionate about mathematics. I left Montreal to study math and computer science at the University of Waterloo in Canada. I currently live in Toronto with my wonderful girlfriend and our little dog Skywalker who enjoys kayaking with us around the beaches and bluffs. I am a Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft, where I have worked on various AI projects and have been a core contributor in the development of Microsoft Copilot. While my colleagues recognize me as a diligent engineer, but only a few have had the opportunity to witness my prowess as a skier.
For my career, I have been dedicated to building AI applications since I was in university 15 years ago. During my studies, I joined Maluuba as one of the early engineers. We developed personal assistants for phones, TVs, and cars that handled a wide range of commands. We started with using classical machine learning models such as SVMs, Naive Bayes, and CRFs before adapting to use deep learning. We sold Maluuba to Microsoft in 2017 to help Microsoft in their journey to incorporate AI into more products. I have been working on a few AI projects at Microsoft including some research to put trainable models in Ethereum smart contracts, which we talked about in our last interview. Since 2020, I have been working on a chat system built into Bing which evolved into Microsoft Copilot. I am currently a Principal Software Engineer on the Copilot Platform team at Microsoft, where we’re focused on developing a generalized platform for copilots at Microsoft.
TheSequence is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
🛠 ML Work
Your recent work includes working on Microsoft Copilot, which is a central piece of Microsoft’s AI vision. Tell us about the vision and core capabilities of the platform.
We have built a platform for copilots and apps that want to leverage large language models (LLMs) and easily take advantage of the latest developments in AI. Many products use our platform such as Windows, Edge, Skype, Bing, SwiftKey, and many Office products. Their needs and customization points vary. It’s a fun engineering challenge to build a system that’s designed to work well for many different types of clients in different programming languages and that scales from simple LLM usage to more sophisticated integrations with plugins and custom middlewares. Many teams benefit not only from the power of our customizable platform, but they also benefit from the many Responsible AI (RAI) and security guards built into our system.
Are copilots/agents the automation paradigm of the AI era? How would you compare copilots with previous automation trends, such as robotic process automation (RPA), middleware platforms, and others?
Copilots help us automate many types of tasks and get our work done more quickly in a breadth of scenarios, but right now, we still often need to review their work such as emails or code they write. Other types of automation might be hard for an individual to configure, but once it’s configured, it’s designed to run autonomously and be trusted because its scope is limited. Another big difference with using LLMs compared to previous automation trends is that we can now use the same model to help with many different types of tasks when given the right instructions and examples. When given the right instructions and grounding information, LLMs can often generalize to new scenarios.
There are capabilities such as planning/reasoning, memory, and action execution that are fundamental building blocks of copilots or agents. What are some of the most exciting research and technologies you have seen in these areas?
AutoGen is an interesting paradigm that’s adapting classical ideas like ensembling techniques from previous eras of AI for the new more generalized LLMs. AutoGen can use multiple different LLMs to collaborate and solve a task.
Semantic Kernel is a great tool for aiding in orchestrating LLMs and easily integrating plugins, RAG, and different models. It also works well with my favorite tool to easily run models locally: Ollama.
Here’s a somewhat controversial question: copilots/agents are typically constructed as an LLM surrounded by features like RAG, action execution, memory, etc. How much of those capabilities do you foresee becoming part of the LLM (maybe fine-tuned) themselves versus what remains external? In other words, does the model become the copilot?
It’s really helpful to have features like RAG available as external integrations for brand new scenarios and to ensure that we cite the right data. When training models, we talk about the ‘cold start’ problem: how do we get data and examples for new use cases? Very large models can learn about certain desired knowledge, but it’s hard to foresee what will be required in this quickly changing space. Many teams using our Copilot Platform expect to use RAG and plugins to easily integrate their stored knowledge from various sources that update often, such as content from the web based on news, or documentation that changes daily. It would be outlandish to tell them to collect lots of training data, even if it’s unlabeled or unstructured data, and to fine-tune a model hourly or even more often as the world changes. We’re not ready for that yet. Citing the right data is also important. Without RAG, current models hallucinate too much and cannot yet be trusted to cite the original source of information. With RAG, we know what information is available for the model to cite at runtime and we include those links in the UI along with a model’s response, even if the model did not choose to cite them, because they’re helpful as references for us to learn more about a topic.
One of the biggest challenges with using models such as GPT-4 for domain-specific agents or copilots is that they are just too big and expensive. Microsoft has recently been pushing the small language model (SLMs) trend with models like Orca or Phi. Are SLMs generally better suited for business copilot scenarios?
SLMs are very useful for specific use cases and can be more easily fine-tuned. The biggest caveat for SLMs is that many only work well in fewer languages than GPT-4 which knows many languages. I’ve had a great time playing around with them using Ollama. It’s easy to experiment and build an application with a local SLM, especially while you’re more focused on traditional engineering problems and designing parts of your project. Once you’re ready to scale to many languages and meet the foray of customer needs, a more powerful model might be more useful. I think the real answer will be hybrid systems that find ways to leverage small and large models.
How important are guardrails in Microsoft’s Copilots, and how do you think about that space?
We have many important guardrails for Responsible AI (RAI) built into our Copilot Platform from inspecting user input to verifying model output. These protections are one of the main reasons that many teams use our platform. The guardrails and shields that we set up for RAI are very important in our designs. RAI is a core part of every design review, and we standardize how RAI works for everything that goes into and comes out of our platform. We work with many teams across Microsoft to standardize what to validate and share knowledge. We also ensure that the long prompt with special instructions, examples, and formatting is treated securely, just like code, and not exposed outside of our platform.
Your team was very vocal about their work in the Copilot user experience, using technologies like SignalR. What makes the UX for copilots/agents different from previous paradigms?
We built new user experiences for our copilots to integrate them into existing products and we wrote a blog to share some of our design choices such as how we stream responses and designed the platform to work with many different types of clients in different programming languages. I also did a podcast to discuss some topics mentioned in the blog post more. One of the biggest noticeable differences with previous assistants or agents is how an answer is streamed word by word, or token by token, as the response is generated. The largest and most powerful models can also be the slowest ones and it can take many seconds or sometimes minutes to generate a full response with grounding data and references, so it’s important for us to start to show the user an answer as quickly as possible. We use SignalR to help us simplify streaming the answer to the client. SignalR automatically detects and chooses the best transport method among the various web standard protocols and techniques. WebSockets are used as the transport method by default for most of our applications and we can gracefully fall back to Server-Sent Events or long polling. SignalR also simplifies bidirectional communication, such as when the application needs to send information to the service to interrupt the streaming of a response.
We use Adaptive Cards and Markdown to easily scale to displaying responses in multiple different applications or different programming languages. We use the new object-basin library that we built to generalize and simplify streaming components of JSON to modify the JSON in the Adaptive Cards that were already streamed to the application. This gives the service a lot of control over what is displayed in the applications and the application can easily tweak how the response is formatted, for example, by changing CSS.
💥 Miscellaneous – a set of rapid-fire questions
What is your favorite area of research outside of generative AI?
Quantum Computing.
Is reasoning and planning the next big thing for LLMs and, consequently, copilots? What other research areas are you excited about?
Reasoning and planning are important for some complex scenarios beyond question answering where multiple steps are involved such as planning a vacation or determining the phases of a project. I’m also excited about ways that we can use smaller and simpler local models securely for simple scenarios.
How far can the LLM scaling laws take us? All the way to AGI?
I’m confident that we will get far with LLMs because we’ve seen them do awesome things already. My personal observation is that we tend to make giant leaps in AI every few years and then the progress is slower and more incremental in the years between the giant leaps. I think at least one more giant leap will be required before AGI is achieved, but I’m confident that LLMs will help us make that giant leap sooner by making us more productive. Language is just one part of intelligence. Models will need to understand the qualia associated with sensory experiences to become truly intelligent.
Describe a programmer’s world with copilots in five years.
Copilots will be integrated more into the development experience, but I hope they don’t eliminate coding completely. Copilots will help us even more with our tasks and going back to not having a copilot already feels weird and lonely to me. I like coding and feeling like I built something, but I’m happy to let a copilot take over with more tedious tasks or help me discover different techniques. Copilots will help us get more done faster as they get more powerful and increase in context size to understand more of a project instead of just a couple of sections or files. Copilots will also need to become more proactive and less reactive to respond only when prompted. We will have to be careful to build helpful systems that are not pestering.
Who are your favorite mathematicians and computer scientists, and why?
I don’t think I can pick a specific person that I fully admire, but right now, even though we wouldn’t typically call them mathematicians, Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman come to mind. People have been talking more about them lately because Daniel Kahneman passed away a few months ago. I think about them, system 1 vs. system 2 thinking, and slowing down to apply logic, a deep kind of mathematics, as I read “The Undoing Project” and “Thinking, Fast and Slow” a few years ago.

Oooo ask for Pike, how about pike and a non human (preferable gn or male please :) ) reader and how they would try and communicate if the universal translators go down whilst stuck in a turbo lift together? :D
Oooh what a FUN concept! 🤩 I’ll do my best! I got really creative when I heard the word “alien” I hope you like it!
Color Coded (Platonic Pike x Reader)
Rating: E for Everyone!
Word Count: 1.1k
Content: SFW, Ops!Reader, Alien!Reader, Cadet!Reader, GN!Reader, budding friendship, author OG alien race, minor concussion, reader saves the day!, shenanigans, general cuteness (with stakes!)
Teaser: The language of your people is unique, even amongst Federation worlds. So much so that you need to have your own personal translator on hand. Sure would be a shame if a freak turbolift accident broke it or something!
It had been a long day of recalibrations and catching up on redundancy checks, but the Enterprise was back in peak condition. At least now you could finally go relax in your tank.
The turbolift doors whisked open hardly two floors after you’d started.
“Bridge.”
You straightened as much as your petite cephalopodic frame could manage, it was the Captain! A human you had only seen but had yet to meet!
“Oh! Hello Cadet! I’m Captain Christopher Pike. I apologize that I wasn’t able to meet you in person when you came aboard. I had some unexpected diplomatic duties on Starbase One.”
“No worries sir! I know you’re very busy!” You scented into your personal translator, turning dark blue then pink with humility and a little intimidation.
“Still, I try to make sure I get to meet everyone who comes aboard, especially someone as historic as you. You’re Starfleet’s first Prismatican correct? Your people communicate through color and olfactory sequences, unique even by Federation standards. How’s that personal translator working for you?”
“Quite well sir! Cadet Uhura and I have begun programming a software workaround that will hopefully allow me to patch into the universal translat-“
VOOM!
The turbolift froze in its tracks with a violent force that knocked the power out, and both of you off balance! You went flying and instinctively clung to the wall. The captain wasn’t so lucky, you heard him slam against the side of the lift with a grunt, and the sound of delicate metal crunching.
“Oh no.”
Unless the Captain was hiding a delicate piece of scientific equipment in his pocket, you could only guess what his unexpected dive had broken.
This was going to be a problem.
“Unh, are you alright Cadet?”
In the darkness you had no idea what he just said, you couldn't see him. You only felt movement, and with your scent resynthesizer crushed, you’d have to rely on lip reading. Thank goodness you took Federation Standard at the academy! But there was just one issue, it was pitch dark in here!
You skittered toward the where you knew the emergency switch was but the power came back on right as you reached for it, or where you had thought it was, turns out you were on the ceiling!
It seemed the Captain was surprised to find you there, he winced at the light. You tried to make yourself useful and open the ceiling hatch, but it was dented shut. You looked down and noticed something even more worrying, Captain Pike was bleeding!
You let go and landed right in front of him, turning red and trying to say ‘blood’ or at least scent it, not that you knew what human blood smelled like until just now.
“Ok, why… why do you smell like copper? What are you trying to, oh.”
Pike grazed his temple and noticed the red streak across his fingertips.
“Whelp, that explains why I was having such a hard time getting up. Is the turbolift actually tilted or… or is that just me?”
You tilted yourself to indicate that the turbolift was in fact almost sideways. The Captain nodded, pinching the bridge of his nose before reorienting himself towards the communications panel with a little help from you.
“We gotta talk to engineering, they’ll be able to get us out of here in no time.”
You sensed he was trying to be reassuring but you barely caught what he said, he wasn’t exactly looking at you. How were you going to tell him you could read lips? Would he even remember? He didn’t seem to be feeling too well.
“Engineering this is Captain Pike, status report?”
No response.
“Engineering, status report, what the hell happened out there?”
Still nothing.
“Captain to Bridge, Number One is everything alright?”
Captain Pike swallowed hard, Humans may not change color (much) when they were upset, but there were other ways to tell.
Hoping nothing bad had happened, you realized there was another possibility. You removed the cover panel of the communications hub. Ah! Just as you thought! The impact the turbolift took jostled some of the relay chips free.
It’d be an easy fix, if you had humanoid digits like the rest of the crew. Lesson learned, never leave your accommodations in Engineering!
You were going to have to show the Captain how to do it for you. You tapped the Captain on his shoulder, gesticulating to the chips.
“Ok, got it, how do we fix this?”
You turned orange then yellow, orange chip, yellow wire. Easy right?
“I don’t, I don’t follow.”
Apparently not.
You reminded yourself to be patient, he was your superior officer, and also, he hit his head pretty bad. Which couldn’t be good for somebody whose bones were on the inside. Human biology was so strange.
You pointed to the loose chip, and then to the wire, turning orange, then yellow again.
“Oh! Sorry, uh, I think, I miiiight have a concussion. Don’t worry though, I’ll be fine.” He grinned half-heartedly as he followed your directions.
You didn’t really believe him. But at least you knew what the thing that was wrong with him was called now! Maybe you should’ve taken a first aid course, fixing humanoids couldn’t be that different to fixing machines, right?
This process went on for a few minutes, there were a couple moments where he scared you a little by taking a while to respond or having to lean on the wall for a minute, but it got done. Wanting to be as much help as possible you pressed the comms button for him.
“Una…”
“Captain! Oh my god we’ve been looking all over for you, are you alright?!”
“I’m fine I- ugh, smells like battery acid, what’s wrong? Are you angry with me?”
“I’m sorry what was that Captain?”
“Okay, okay, okay I’m sorry. I might have a mild concussion, our new Cadet and I are trapped in a turbolift, hatch is damaged shut, not sure where we are…”
Oh no he'd zoned out again! You tapped the Captain on his leg, but he didn’t seem to notice.
“Captain? Chris?”
“What?”
“Don’t worry Chris, we’ll send someone to get you. I’ll fill you in on what happened AFTER you go to sickbay alright?”
“…Alright”
You turned off the comms, ushering the Captain to sit down, he did so heavily.
“Guess it’s time to sit tight, you did, ow, you did good Cadet. Especially given the circumstances, sorry about that by the way, I’ll… somebody'll fix it. Hope I can return the favor.”
You turned bright yellow, it sure felt nice to be appreciated!
“Oh, okay, that’s minty, I’m guessing that means thank you?”
You know what? Close enough!

chrissy advice please? 🥺 im in the middle of a small crisis over my career decisions, how did u choose software engineering and what is it like,, baby's first major switch and its scary
Ah okay so! I can talk about how I ended up switching majors and work and stuff.
When I was doing college apps, I wasn't totally sure what I wanted to major in. I knew I liked all of math, bio, chem, and physics, and I could kinda throw a dart at any one of them. But I was trying to think in terms of career prospects. I liked medical stuff, but didn't want to be a doctor, so I kinda bundled that in the direction of biomedical engineering and went with that in my college apps.
For a while that was my plan. The Dartmouth engineering tracks all share the same set of pre-reqs and intro-level classes before people branch off to take classes more specific to the field of engineering they're targeting. So by spring of my sophomore year I'd completed all the pre-reqs and shared-level courses and was picking out my schedule around specific upper-level bio engineering courses. (These were grad-level, technically, and needed instructor sign-off for you to enroll in the class.)
So I was just, sitting in the engineering building waiting for the professor to show up so I could request the instructor sign off to join the class. And it kind of occurred to me "hmm this is maybe my last chance to switch tracks if I want to."
I'd joked with my roommate before (chem major) frequently like "what if we both become English majors instead? Dance majors? German majors?" but only jokingly, and had stuck with biomed as a sort of "meh, why not?" and a "meh, what else?"
But since this was REALLY my last chance, I decided to pull up the engineering site's set of example major plans for the various engineering branches. I looked through like, mechanical engineering and went "meh, nah", and same for chemical engineering and civil engineering and whatever else there was.
Then I got to the example computer engineering major plan and I read through all the courses going "man I'd love to take that course if I had the free time". And when I realized I was doing that to EVERY course on the list I was like "hey wait a sec".
The general engineering track required we take a course in C, which I'd taken and really enjoyed and liked messing with in my free time. We used Matlab in various other course work and I was usually the odd man out in my friend group in that I actually LIKED using Matlab. I just, really fundamentally, liked Making Programs Do Stuff. And it really started to sink in how like, every bit of coursework where I'd happily done more with it in my own free time was all programming stuff.
I'd interned in a cancer research lab on campus my freshman summer (had a great time doing grunt work, but knew I didn't want to do what my post doc boss did as a profession). And the post doc who'd been my boss (her name was Abeer and she was great) happened to walk by at that time and asked what I was doing. So I used her as a sounding board and she helped me really solidify on the idea that this is what I wanted. It should have been obvious, but I was just so set in biomed because that's what I'd been answering with for years now.
Anyway so I kinda packed up my stuff and left the building being like "never mind I'm computer now."
This DID make me nervous in a long-run kind of way. I'd carefully planned out my major for the biomed track, and suddenly I was changing gears without a plan and I knew I was gonna be competing with people who'd taken CompSci courses since freshman year. (I'd not, at this point, even taken a real computer science course through the CompSci department, just the engineering course in C and some scattered Matlab knowledge.) But on the other hand I think this angle helped me in internship interviews by pushing the fact that I made a difficult switch because I was passionate about software. Though the imposter syndrome was a rough time.
Worked out surprisingly well. I only needed to throw my resume at two companies while seeking out an internship for the next year. And after five interviews and being flown to Washington state Microsoft said "yeah you" and I said "hooray thank you"
For industry experience, I can only really speak to Big Company experience (been working at Microsoft since I graduated). In terms of day to day, I'm very glad, and I made the right choice. The most frustrating elements come from working in a HUGE code ecosystem, where you have to be EXTREMELY diligent since any Little Whoopsie I make could bring down Microsoft Office if I'm not careful (of course, there are a lot of various fail safes and procedures around, but I would still cause a huge headache for a lot of people if I fuck something up and it drags things to a screeching halt, even if I don't break production itself).
The ramp-up is tough because there is a LOT to get under your thumb, and your skills tend to get pretty niche to serve the particular area and role your team attends to. Code writing can go very slow because it often feels like trying to work within the world's biggest jenga tower.
But as for positives: I still do feel I generally enjoy my work, even if I'm not banging out thousands of lines of code a day. I'm well-supported, well-treated, and well-compensated on a team that demonstrably supports their employees, not just in lip service. Software engineering in general is a super in-high-demand field, and once your foot is in the door it's easy to make yourself desirable. I'm not personally looking to hop jobs since I like my stability and where I am, but many other people hop jobs frequently within software since it's a way to pursue better pay.
In short: I hopped to software because I realized it was something I just genuinely enjoyed doing. (The hop did scare me because I was like "oh no im gonna be competing with Leet Gamers who've been coding since they were five". And while those people exist, they're not the majority.)
Software engineering in industry varies. If you go to a smaller company, you probably have a lot more leeway and a lot more rope to hang yourself with. So probably more fun and freedom but also way less stability and a much higher likelihood of biting off more than you can chew and not having guidance on how to actually do things well.
Big Company is sort of all that in reverse: much less freedom, much higher bar to do things correctly and air-tight, stability, a lot of more-senior engineers above you as mentors

Other Space episode 1 sentence starters
“I had some hot dogs generated for you guys. Y’know, it’s just my way of saying thanks.”
“Once we’re clear, it’s hot dog time!”
“We’re showing a power drain of 85%.”
“Oh, crap, it’s an ion asteroid!”
“I have allergies, and I’m also lactose intolerant, so, y’know, sometimes I have these explosive sneezes. It’s like a fart-sneeze combo.”
“You guys think I’m an idiot, don’t you?”
“You’re making me captain of my own ship!?”
“Sorry I’m late, everybody, I had to wash my balls.”
“I had your action figure when I was a kid.”
“He’s absorbed his share of engine radiation over the years, but, at our price level, he is still the best in the business.”
“We’re all terrified of her, so we’re making her your second-in-command.”
“Oh, no, no, no, undo command! I was just kidding, I don’t want to fire any lasers!”
“Greetings, captain! My name’s [name]. I’m programmed to monitor all ship functions, communicate with command vessels, and provide data analysis and reference databases.”
“Are my breasts and buttocks to your liking?”
“Optimally, I’d be attractive enough for you to want to perform well in front of me, but not so attractive that you’d fantasize about having sex with me.”
“With a communicator, we can talk every night. I even installed an upgraded sensation software so that our screen kisses will taste and feel like the real thing.”
“Control says they need you. Apparently, they need you right now, so stop kissing her, they’re saying.”
“Make me proud, Turkey.”
“God, he couldn’t even say ‘I love you’. I mean, how hard is that? Three words. ‘I. Love. You.’.”
“You’re out of your mind, right?”
“I think you’re supposed to salute me before you speak to me.”
“Your first decision as captain, and you made your crush the navigator?”
“I also signed off on the computer’s boob and butt size.”
“I’m gonna make your life a living hell, and you’re gonna wish you never set foot in that academy.”
“You’re the best babysitter ever!”
“You can be my second-in-command anytime!”
“We thought Jupiter was a solid mass. We were dumbasses, weren’t we?”
“Greetings, [sir/ma’am], and may I just say it is an honor to be serving under you.”
“I’m still the kid you used to babysit, remember?”
“Actually… They gave second to [name], so you’re going to be my third-in-command.”
“You’re wearing a captain’s shirt.”
“Hello, captain; I’m [name], your new science officer.”
“I couldn’t be less pleased to be here.”
“Thank you for your honesty.”
“Lying is not a skill that I possess.”
“My preliminary reading is that people are not, in fact, excited.”
“It’s time to say something I have been waiting my whole life to say.”
“Do you guys not know the motto?”
“I know we got off on the wrong foot today, but that’s only because we haven’t had time to gel as a team.”
“On this, our very first night together, I thought we’d have a little celebratory meal.”
“I can’t eat tryptophan. It makes blood come out my ears.”
“Let’s raise a fork to our new family.”
“We’re in this together.”
“Jesus Christ, this tastes like Grandma.”
“Did you also space out how we’re supposed to survive a year on this ship with no food!?”
“This is so cool, but I don’t think we can eat fudge for a year.”
“I haven’t peed in a decade.”
“Does anybody else feel like their head’s about to explode?”
“Oh, that’s just the radiation. You’ll get used to it.”
“Can’t you see I’m dreaming of electric sheep here?”
“I don’t think I remember seeing a robot on the crew manifest.”
“I’m riding the intergalactic rails like the space hobos of yore.”
“So you forgot to bring usable food, but you managed to bring along a stowaway?”
“She really wants to get back to that stupid Swedish boyfriend of hers.”
“We’re caught in a gravitational field.”
“…Was anyone else just a baby?”
“Hello? New friends?”
“Who messed with the lights? Jeez.”
“Preliminary data shows that we encountered a rupture between our universe and some parallel entity.”
“’Brane Theory says that our universe is like a large, flat jellyfish.”
“It’s nothing like a fecal disposal unit; it’s jellyfish.”
“So, we discovered a tunnel to a new universe? Yay, us!”
“Don’t call me ‘Nibs’ in front of the crew!”
“Oh, shut up, you fudge-eating hippie; long hair went out in 2083!”
“I’m detecting high levels of personal tension.”
“Nice body. Who designed it, a 13-year-old boy?”
“This was all just a simulation?”
“Deception, though sometimes necessary, is never cool.”
“And the Nobel Prize for excellence in Physics and Rockin’ Hot Bod goes to…”
“I’ve had a huge crush on you ever since we started at the academy together.”
“Let’s hold hands. And let’s screw all night.”
“I wanna play board games with you. I wanna have dinner with your parents.”
“Tell me about Spider-Man.”
“Let’s open the airlocks and go celebrate. The drinks are on me.”
“I hereby declare this mission over.”
“The idea that this is not real is not real. The simulation is simulated. It’s not that complicated.”
“[Name] just told me s/he’s in love with me. You told me that would never happen in a million years.”
“So that was fake? People taking me seriously?”
“What happened to my sandwich?”
“Activate door lock.”
“Override.”
“Override override.”
“Override override override.”
“What a mess. [Name] doesn’t love me, all we have to eat is fudge, something’s trying to kill us and I have no idea how to get us out of here, and, on top of everything, you hate me.”
“Your fantasy is literally me getting fired.”
“Why do you have to be such a jerk?”
“I’m tired of busting my ass to get things that just fall into your lap.”
“I just tried to stage a coup against you, okay? You don’t apologize to me.”
“The reason that you succeed is because you… Are… Good.”
“You’re a better captain than I could ever be.
“Are you recording this?”
“This is a special moment you’re gonna wanna remember.”
“Regulations on mutiny are pretty clear.”
“So your number one fantasy is to find a tuna fish sandwich on the ground?”
“Everyone’s super sad.”
“What would you name that planet?”
“We all went to the academy because we loved outer space. We wanted adventure.”
“We’re gonna see things that no one on Earth could’ve ever dreamed of.”
“Forget what your stupid programming says!”
“Very well, captain. Initiating self-deletion protocol.”
“It’s just us out here.”
“Now let’s go find us some dinner in this crazy new universe.”
“Captain’s just a title, really. It’s just a word. We all have captain potential, if you think about it.”
“You guys are the best and I will not let you down.”
“Okay, so, imagine a toilet, and we are in the toilet…”
“Are you disrespecting your captain, Second Officer [Name]?”

Because I'm obsessed with Hivemind Etho, here's another little story with them for the @hermitcraftheadcanons Hermitopia AU. As before, this is just a quick piece that's only been lightly edited because of the time constraints of this community AU.
This is also some setup for a potential future confrontation for somebody else to write.
---
The two Ethos stood at the door to the apartment, waiting for the hour to strike.
It was all they could do to not to brush the hastily cut and dyed hair away from one of their selves' forehead, or fight against the overly tight suit and tie, or scratch at the cheap surgical mask that sat in place of their regular cloth face covering, or the makeup that tried to conceal their prominent eye scar. The other self pulled their jacket closer, trying to extract enough comfort from it for the both of them.
The clock struck 7am. Etho knocked.
A few minutes later, the door was pulled open by a bleary-eyed Mumbo in a dressing gown.
"Hello– oh no what are you doing here please don't hurt me please don't hurt me."
The undisguised Etho pushed through the doorway as Mumbo backed away from the Unrestrained villain, now fully awake.
"Your ID card," said the Etho, entering the room.
"What?" said Mumbo.
"Your ConCorp ID pass," clarified the Etho, holding out their hand. "Give it to us. Now."
"Um, I don't think I'm supposed to do that," said Mumbo, desperately searching for something to grab.
The Etho's eyes bore into Mumbo, cold, unflinching, unwavering. One looked right at him while the other seemed to look right through him.
"Um, right, ok," said Mumbo. "Uh, can you pass me my bag? It's in there."
The disguised Etho entered the apartment and grabbed the briefcase sitting by the door, opening it and grabbing the pass inside, clipping it onto their own trousers. They closed the bag and held it beside them.
"Um, ok," said Mumbo. "I– is that all you wanted?"
"Your phone too," said the undisguised Etho.
"Please no!" Mumbo pleaded. "I can't lose that. What if there's an emergency and I need to call for help but I don't have my phone so the apartment burns down or if somebody gets hurt and I can't call an ambulance or–"
The Etho took a step forward. "Your phone," they repeated.
"Ok ok please don't hurt me," said Mumbo, retrieving his phone from his pocket and holding up both hands.
The Etho grabbed the phone and tossed it over their shoulder at their other self, who caught it flawlessly.
The Etho looked between the cowering Mumbo before them and their other, disguised self. About the same height. Hair roughly similar enough to pass. The ConCorp-issued suit didn't fit quite the same, and the face mask was an obvious difference, but it was close enough if nobody gave them a second glance.
And, having been observing Mumbo for the last few weeks, there didn't seem to be anybody who would give Mumbo a second glance.
The disguised Etho turned silently and left. The other Etho shut the front door and turned the lock, trapping them and Mumbo inside.
***
The disguised Etho walked up to the ConCorp entrance at 8:53am. This seemed to be the average time of Mumbo's arrivals. They walked towards the turnstiles and swiped Mumbo's pass.
"Everything alright?" asked a receptionist behind the main desk, presumably concerned by the face mask.
The Etho coughed. "I'll be fine," they croaked.
"Sweetie, if you're feeling unwell, you should be at home, resting," she said.
"Got stuff to do," croaked Etho, walking forward into the elevator before any further questions could be asked.
"Where's your office?" the Etho at Mumbo's apartment asked, sitting in a corner of Mumbo's couch from which they could see the whole room.
"Um, at ConCorp HQ," said Mumbo, fiddling with a teabag.
Etho sighed. "Precise directions from the elevator please," they said.
"Oh, uh, straight ahead down the corridor, last door on the left," Mumbo said.
The "Mumbo" Etho followed the described path and scanned their pass to enter the room.
The kettle clicked. Mumbo poured the boiling water out into the mug. The Etho in the apartment tensed, ready to spring away at any sign the hot contents would be flung towards them.
"And what's your password?" asked Etho.
"For what?" said Mumbo.
"Your ConCorp laptop," said Etho, the faintest wisps of exasperation creeping into their otherwise carefully controlled voice.
"I am so getting fired for this," sighed Mumbo.
"Better your job than your life," Etho replied flippantly.
"Of course," said Mumbo hurriedly. "It's – oh gosh I can't believe I'm saying this aloud – it's BMX4lyfe95!"
The Etho at the office typed it in. Finally, the internal network was open to them.
They started working to set up a reverse proxy to tunnel out from behind the firewall. Another of their selves at home was already positioned to connect to the network tunnel as soon as it was opened.
Mumbo poured milk into his mug, throwing away the teabag and walking over to the lounge. The Etho already on a couch got ready to jump, but Mumbo just sat down across from them and took a sip.
Mumbo stared down into his mug. "You're a hacker, right?" he asked, his eyes not looking up.
"One of my talents," said Etho cautiously.
"Since they're gonna fire me anyway, can I ask a small favour?" said Mumbo, still acting like his tea was the most fascinating thing in the room.
"Depends," said Etho.
Mumbo drummed his fingers against the mug. "I have this friend, Iskall," Mumbo said. "He's one of the office workers at ConCorp. I made his cybernetics after he got injured. But they keep breaking in weird ways and I don't know why. His explanations don't make sense! The metal I use doesn't melt like that from accidentally touching a stove. They shouldn't buckle like that from tripping into a wall. They shouldn't shatter from falling down a flight of stairs. I'm... I'm just worried for him. Is he in danger? What isn't he telling me?"
The Etho on the couch was quiet for a few seconds. "You only have partial access to the VEX files," they said. "There's a lot I can't find here."
"It's so creepy how you do that," said Mumbo.
Etho ignored him.
The Etho at home let out a quiet cheer as they managed to connect through the tunnel into the ConCorp network. They started browsing, collecting, and saving as much information as possible.
The Etho in the office switched their focus to finding some sort of privilege escalation vulnerability that would let them access the more secure files.
"Erm, I probably should have asked before," said Mumbo. "Would you like some tea? Some breakfast?"
"I'm fine," said the Etho in the apartment.
"So, uh, do you have any hobbies?" asked Mumbo.
"Please don't small talk," said Etho. "I'm busy."
"Oh, ok," said Mumbo. "Can I go grab a book or something then? Since, y'know, I don't have my phone or laptop or anything."
Etho nodded. "But if you call for help," they said, "I will know about it and I will make you regret it."
"Of course," said Mumbo.
The Etho in the office kept prodding at the ConCorp intranet. What they needed were the credentials of a superior, maybe even the Director himself. Hmm, it seemed from this directory structure that the Director was Mumbo's direct supervisor. It would only take a few hours to set up some sort of spear phishing attempt that would let them pivot directly onto the Director's computer. As long as they didn't get caught first, of course.
Etho opened Mumbo's calendar and declined all meetings that day that wouldn't look suspicious to avoid. There weren't many meetings to sort through.
"How often do you get visitors to your office?" Etho asked Mumbo.
"Iskall usually comes for lunch when he's not swamped by a project," said Mumbo. "Otherwise, nobody else just pops 'round usually."
"How about your boss?" asked Etho.
"He's busy," Mumbo said. "I have to go to him if we ever talk."
The Etho in the apartment nodded, settling back to focus on what their other selves were doing.
***
Hi Cub, Etho typed. Can you review this interface I made? It should let us remotely view what's happening with our heroes through their cybernetics. With some extra work, we could get actual video from their perspective to send to the media!
Etho sent the message, then sent the file with their exploit. The exploit was covered by a very quickly and poorly thrown together interface which returned the live location of a GPS receiver they had found in the lab.
They left it a few minutes, stretching back in Mumbo's desk chair as they waited for a reply.
Finally, one came through.
Hey Mumbo. Great prototype! We'll probably need to pass off development to the actual software engineering team, but this is a great initiative. I'm proud to have a thinker like you on our team!
Etho allowed themselves a smile as they checked to see if their exploit had worked. There it was, a tunnel open on the expected port right into the Director's machine. Jackpot.
The Etho at home pivoted through the new tunnel and started scraping as much information as they could.
"Your friend is a mercenary," the Etho in Mumbo's apartment said, making Mumbo jump at the sudden sound.
"Wait what?" said Mumbo.
"Iskall is a mercenary and assassin for ConCorp, working for them in exchange for ConCorp saving his life," clarified Etho.
"Iskall, a mercenary?" Mumbo said. "No no no no no. That can't be!"
"That's what his file says," Etho said with a shrug. "Either way, I've got what I need. I've called you in sick for the next week, and I'm keeping your pass to enforce that. Your phone will be returned, but I've programmed it to inform me if you let any part of today slip. I hope you understand."
"Uh, thank you, I guess," said Mumbo.
"I'll be here with your belongings in half an hour," Etho continued, standing up.
"What do– oh, right," said Mumbo.
"And don't do anything stupid," said Etho, opening the door to leave. "As thanks for your assistance, the nHo will try to keep you safe from any upcoming confrontation. But if you break this trust, that guarantee will not hold."
"I understand," said Mumbo, gulping at the idea of having to further betray his company, his friends.
The Etho left his apartment.

Chasing Ghosts

____________________________
Tasha comes down the hall and stands like a ghost behind the sofa.
James is in the recliner across the living room, and he barely looks up from the textbook he's pretending to peruse. The quiet music he's had playing in one ear has long since captured his attention more than the multiplication of matrices. He's fairly sure he'll never use the skill lest he become a software engineer post-graduation, and the prospect of that's looking pretty slim.
He sees Tasha out of his peripheral vision, but doesn't move his head or lift his eyes for acknowledgment. She's probably drifted down from her weekend high, realized it's Sunday night, and gotten up for a Gatorade and maybe a glance at her homework.
Steve, though, who's lying on his stomach and taking up the whole of the couch, practically jumps to attention. He stands, scoots, and sits again in the amount of time it takes James to blink and make the first inhalation of a laugh.
"Sorry," Steve says, as if he's personally offended Tasha and just been called out. "I didn't mean... I was just, like, studying..."
Tasha shrugs. "Didn't come to sit with you," she says, in a voice that recalls the 'boys are gross' tone of young teenagerhood.
"What's up, then?" James asks, trying to bring back the balance of the room's atmosphere.
Tasha makes an ugly face. She opens her mouth, then shuts it. "Can I talk to you alone?"
James scoffs. "You think there's privacy in this apartment?"
"I can go, I don't know--" Steve looks around.
"Just talk," James says. He almost rolls his eyes, but the undercurrent of Tasha's affect seems to hold an air of seriousness. If there's something she needs to confess or ask for help with, he doesn't want her to feel less than secure.
Tasha lets out a breathy sort of sigh. "Blood," she says. "There's blood."
"Huh?" Steve responds first. "Where?"
James takes a little longer to contemplate the admission. Has she cut herself? There's no visible damage; Tasha's not holding an injury or howling in pain. Bloody vomit? That's nothing new, really, and even with vampire-red teeth, which she doesn't have, Tasha probably wouldn't come crying to him.
James is still thinking when Tasha points vaguely down the hall and to the left, which is, technically speaking, her side of the apartment. Or at least the bedroom and bathroom they'd parceled out for her when they'd unofficially moved her out of her dreary campus housing.
"What, in your room?" Steve asks.
"No." Tasha screws up her eyes. "I mean... I'm bleeding."
The cogs continue to turn in James's head, and just as he lands on an answer, Steve gives up, shaking his head and saying, "I don't get it."
"Fuck you," Tasha mumbles. "Both of you." She turns and starts to head back down the hallway.
"Tash." James jumps to his feet, his algebra book falling to the floor.
"You guys are fucking gay..."
"Hey!" Steve interjects.
James flaps his hand at Steve to shut him up. "Maybe we're gay, but I'm your big brother." He shoots a quick glance at Steve, hoping this won't surpass his no privacy promise. They've done some pretty wild stuff together: partying, puking, cleaning the carpet... Period talk shouldn't be too far out of their wheelhouse. At least, not if Tasha wants to talk about it.
Tasha huffs and rounds the edge of the sofa. She stands beside the arm, leaning her hip against it for a moment, before finally deciding to sit down, as far away from Steve as possible.
"I..." James starts, assuming it's his responsibility to keep the conversation going. "I assumed you hadn't been, um. You know."
Tasha's 100 pounds soaking wet. In her usual cutoff shorts and tank tops, he'd give her 95. Maybe 92 if she's detoxing. James assumes she has something like female athlete triad going on, except without the athlete. He doesn't like to think she's just too skinny to go through... normal biological processes. If he blames the drugs, sees them as wrecking her body instead of bringing her solace, then he'll have to turn eyes on himself, and there's no way in hell he wants to do that.
"Smart one," Tasha says. "And exactly how much thought do you give to the functioning of my uterus?"
Steve gives an 'oh shit' face, looking from James to Tasha and back again as if wondering how he's been so thick headed. James agrees, but is also relieved, in a way, that his boyfriend hasn't been thinking about his sister in, well, that way.
"Seeing as I have, more than once, pulled you out of an R-rated situation with iffy consent, and you have yet to become pregnant--" James starts.
"Yeah, ok, you don't have to..." Tasha shakes her head.
James decides not to stop his momentum. "Do you know how much sex you're having? How often you're using protection?"
"I said, you don't have to." Tasha glares at him. "I don't have one. A cycle, or whatever. I can't get knocked up."
"Well, I figured that, but you can still get an STD--
"I don't think you're hearing me," Tasha says. "I don't have one. I haven't. Like, ever."
"But--what?" James squints and cocks his head. "What about, what was it? Cheerleading camp?"
"That stupid summer program when I was 16?" Tasha bites her lip. "Yeah, that was a lie."
"You're losing me." Steve reminds them he's part of the conversation as well.
"What, didn't your mom send you to cheerleading camp when you were a sullen teen?" Tasha asks him, seemingly in all seriousness.
"Um. No." Steve withers a little under her stare. "There was a threat to beat it out of me with a bible when I was that age, but that never came to fruition."
"Mm. Fun times." Tasha scrubs her hair back from her face. "I told mom of the moment I started at camp, so then she couldn't go nuts about the moment I 'became a woman,' or whatever."
Tasha has always seemed like a little kid to James. Her stint at camp had only taken place... he quickly calculates... 3ish years ago. Tasha is a kid. She hasn't busted 20 years old yet. But, for the first time James wonders if other, more metaphorical factors are at play.
The idea quickly fades, though, when he remembers the actual topic at hand. "Ok, but Tash," James says. "What's actually going on right now?"
Tasha practically sinks into the couch cushions. She wraps both arms around her abdomen. "Blood," she says. "Kinda...everywhere."
"We'll clean the bathroom later," James says dismissively.
"And I'll do laundry," Steve offers. "I used to be the scrawny kid who got beat up a lot. I can do bloodstains."
"Not helping, babe," James tells him before Tasha can get a word in.
"Feel sick," Tasha admits, rather suddenly.
"Bathroom it is, then," James decides. "But, let's use mine."
Tasha seems to have turned into a shapeless blob on the corner of the couch, her chest meeting her thighs with her arms still wrapped around her stomach. Her face is in her knees, which James has to admit, would be easier to clean than the carpet.
"Come on," he says gently, taking Tasha's shoulder. "If you're gonna puke, don't do it here, please."
"But I already diiiiid," Tasha complains, drawing out the last word and adding the hiccup of a fake crying fit.
"Sorry." James hooks his flesh arm across Tasha's chest and lets her cling to him down the hall. He takes her into his and Steve's disorganized yet bleach-shined bathroom. Cleaning was practically Steve's hobby. Yet keeping down the clutter? Not his strong suit.
Unsure of exactly what kind of sick his sister intends to be, he sets her down, fully clothed, on the toilet, which, of course, has the seat up. Then he dives for the trash can and shoves it into Tasha's chest.
She gives James an appreciative glare, then sets her chin on the edge of the trash can, ostensibly to wait for an upcoming retch. James can practically see it, rising from the bottom of her spine, up her back, to her neck and throat before finally pushing a pitiful amount of spit and bile out of her mouth.
"Ok..." James sighs. If she's down to just that, she's been at it a while. Lost a lot of fluids already.
"Gatorade?" Steve asks in a chipper tone, putting voice to what James is thinking without a trace of delicacy.
"Hmph." Tasha spits. "If it'll... make it stop burning..."
"Lemme guess, vodka last night?" James tries to make her laugh. Maybe cough.
"Fuck you."
"Eh, we'll talk about that later," James says, hoping he doesn't sound threatening. "For now, how about I go with you?" James pulls on Steve's arm and heads for the bathroom door.
"Hey, you said no privacy here..." Tasha's irritated and sickly voice trails after them.
"Yeah, well, puking people aren't allowed to leave the bathroom," James says. "That's the house rule that trumps all the others."
"But I puke on the couch all the time--"
"That's because it's too hard to get your fucking limp-ass octopus body into the bathroom in the first place." James rolls his eyes. "Just sit tight."
He quickly drags Steve into the kitchen. "Ok," he says. "You have to know about this stuff. You took health class in high school, right?"
"I've lived with a woman," Steve reminds James, a little shamefully. "But Peggy was super private. You know, like inhibited, about, like, um..."
"Yeah, I get it." James shrugs. Then, "Did you know you can stem a nosebleed with a tampon?"
"Why would I?"
"I don't know..." James shakes his head.
"Why do you?" Steve looks a little take aback now.
"The field. Desert air's pretty damn dry."
"Ah. Ok."
"We'd get donations of shit from the states. Care packages, Costco overstock, you know. Just, whatever. When we got pads and stuff, whoever was unloading the box would just hold them over their head and yell 'who needs them?'"
"And I'm assuming people would just raise their hands?" Steve postulates.
"Yup." James pops the P. "No privacy. Everyone knows everyone else's bathroom habits. When you're deep in the field, there's no men's and women's facilities. Half the time the privies don't even have doors."
"Ok." Steve nods. "Experience, then. You have lots of experience."
James shrugs again. "You have to be chill, ok?" He opens the fridge and pulls out two bottles of Gatorade. He holds one to either side of Steve's neck, as if to physically cool him. "This is, like, super weird and awkward for her. She's really scared, I think, and her brave face just looks...jerk-ish."
"Yeah." Steve takes the Gatorade. "I can be good with this. I really care about her, even if she doesn't think I do."
"I know you do," James says. "It's all in the presentation right now, though. She's skittish. But, also, for some reason, willing to talk. We have to tease it out. And you can't ruin it, ok?"
"Ok, ok." Steve seems to understand, even if he doesn't appreciate the words.
They head back to the bathroom, where Tasha has, for whatever reason, decided to heave into the toilet instead of the trash. She squats awkwardly, sitting on one heel. From the angle he's at, James can see a spreading stain on the back of Tasha's shorts, which has made an imprint on her ankle and the bottom of her foot.
"Don't move," James says, reaching for a towel.
"The fuck would I?" Tasha coughs, holding her stomach and moaning.
"Well, when you're done, stand up slowly and wipe your feet."
"...Shit..." Tasha spits. "Like I said. It's fucking everywhere."
"Yeah..." Menstrual blood, James has no experience with. But blood in general, yeah. It does get fucking everywhere. There's that first moment when the entire body and all its systems are still in shock, like when the arm is first blown off, and then all he can see is red. Even the bone that was white just a second ago is lost in a sea of scarlet--
"Well, I suppose congratulations are in order," Steve says with a grin, clearly trying to be friendly, but missing out on one, or more, of the points. "You're not pregnant."
"Well, of course I'm not, you dingbat," Tasha replies, rolling her eyes so hard that James is sure it must give her a headache. If she doesn't already have one. "And besides. He used a condom."
"Wait," James says. He's been preoccupied by not looking at Steve. "You know that?" he pokes cautiously. "For sure?"
"...Yeah..."
"Every time?"
"To be honest," Tasha starts, spitting and pushing herself away from the toilet. She crab-walks to the towel, wipes her feet, then sits on it, criss-cross like a little kid. "I don't know if he actually gets off every time." She draws her mouth into a straight, defensive line.
"The fuck does that have to do with anything?" James asks.
Steve looks very much like he wants to get the bleach from the cabinet under the sink, pour it into one ear, tip his head, and see if it comes out the other.
"He pulls out," Tasha says bluntly. "And there's never any, you know. Gunk."
"Wait, he does both?" Steve's eyebrows disappear into his hair. "A condom and--"
"Ok, ok." James puts up his hands to shush them both. "And this is, what, this is your dealer we're talking about?"
"Yeah, I guess, if you want to call him that," Tasha says with a shrug.
"What else would we call him?" Steve now looks disgusted. "That'd be stupid to let him just, like, defile you every week."
"He doesn't--" Tasha starts, but then she hiccups, and maybe thinks better of what she was going to say. She still stares Steve down, though, then looks to James as if grasping at straws of support.
"He's, like, a manufacturer?" Tasha turns her gaze sideways.
"Oh, for fuck's sake." James puts his hand over his face. He'd assumed Tasha was getting her stuff on the street, through a framework of various interlopers. Now he's getting news that his kid sister is taking substances thrown together in some coed's bathtub? This is too much.
"Tash--" James starts, trying hard to keep his bubbling anger and concern from spilling over.
"He's a PhD candidate," Tasha says defensively. In Chemistry. And--" her eyes flicker from side to side as she seems to wonder what's appropriate to spill. "I won't tell you his name. But... I'll tell you that he got kicked off the football team for being too violent, but he still wears his green jersey all the time to prove how much better and calmer he's become since that happened, which was only in the freshman year of his undergrad..." Tasha babbles on.
The more she defends the guy, the more James hates him. He feels bad for him a little, slinging synthesized crack to get by. He feels better for Tasha, knowing that what she's taking is most probably pure. But the sex thing is--
"It's kinda creepy," Steve says, taking the words right from James's mouth. "Like, how much older than you is he?"
"I don't know." Tasha shrugs. "Not that much, I don't think. Started school early, finished fast. And I'm not sure this is his first post-graduate program..."
"Maybe shouldn't've added that last part," James says, screwing up his eyes. "So he's had, like, however long to prey on girls who are barely legal. Who might not even be legal..."
"Well, I'm legal, and I can do what I want." Tasha crosses her arms in front of her chest.
"Yeah," James sighs. "Unfortunately."
"But what about the thing with the handcuffs? The gang rape? Losing your bra?" Steve blurts out.
"Wait, you..." Tasha's eyes flash with anger. "You told him?"
"What did I say about privacy?" James quickly reminds her. "The non-puking kind? And, um," He looks to Steve. "Maybe a little respect?"
"Sorry," Steve mutters. "But--I really do--"
"I don't really remember that stuff," Tasha says.
James studies her face, but he can't tell if she's lying.
"Probably just party stuff that got out of hand."
'You mean you were too stoned to know the difference between your regular and some random dude off the street,' James thinks. 'What do you do at parties? And how the fuck do you slip past me?'
"He's your pimp, too, isn't he?" Steve asks, pointing at Tasha rather accusatorially, in James's opinion.
"No!" Tasha leans forward and brings her arms down to cover her clearly still sore abdomen. "Bruce wouldn't--" She swallows. "I didn't-- You didn't hear--"
James hasn't been a student long enough to know who was on the football team 4, 5, 6-odd years ago. He supposes he could look it up, crossing the name with accounts of any violent incident that amount of time ago. He's not sure he wants to, though he'll probably wind up looking it up later. Either that, or Steve will. James still has his ex-mil connections, a few of which were absorbed into the local police force. Steve, on the other hand, is better with social media and navigating the niceties of such mysteries as SnapChat and TikTok.
"Ok, fine," James says, just ameliorate his sister's panic.
"He doesn't even drug me at parties," Tasha goes on, probably unaware of how terribly young and desperate she sounds, making lame-ass excuses so she can keep her boy toy.
"And you've had other guys who did?" Steve asks incredulously, even though James shakes his head frantically at him to try to get him to shut up.
"You know Rumlow?" Tasha asks, since apparently she's now all about spilling names.
James shakes his head, but Steve screws up his eyes and says in a disgusted voice, "him?"
"Yeah..." Tasha sighs and looks down at her fingernails, which are stained rust-red at the root. "Remember the night I didn't come home?"
"Yeah, and scared the living shit out of us because your phone was off," James fills in the blanks.
"Well, I didn't turn it off."
"You mean that asshole kept you overnight without any means of getting yourself out of there?" Steve looks downright sick. "I mean, I know he looks slimy, but that?"
"I think Maria accidentally slept on the couch and found me at, like, 6am trying to stick my head in the linen closet because I couldn't find the bathroom." Tasha laughs, though the situation is anything bur funny.
"And I was so pissed at her for having you out all night..." James trails off.
"Yeah, maybe respect my choices a little more?" Tasha glares at him. "I mean, Maria's studying to become an EMT now. You can't think that badly of her."
'Great,' James thinks. 'Someone who'll drug Tasha to the gills every weekend.' She'll be less likely to overdose, but James has seen it all too often in the field. Newly minted medical personnel eager to sow off their skills and rushing into action.
"Yeah," James says, trying not to smirk. "So you got a girlfriend and a boyfriend now?"
"Ew, no," Tasha replies. "Friends with...benefits, I guess. If you even want to call it that. Folks who look out for each other, using a barter system?"
"Did you recently take World History?" James can't help but poking at her vocabulary.
"Fucking-a, I don't know. Once I pass, it's in my past."
"That's actually a good motto," Steve points out.
"Anyway," James says, bringing the conversation back to topic. "None of your...friends... are invited to this house."
"It's not like I want to bring them over for dinner," Tasha replies. "I guess drop off and pickup might happen, since, well, you know now, and I don't have a car." She shrugs. "Cool?"
James hates the idea of someone inebriated driving a car in which his sister is a passenger, despite the fact that he's done it before. Regularly, actually. Maybe he just hates the idea of the driver being someone who Tasha just fucked. The air might be heavy between them. They might smell like each other's deodorant and musk. They might kiss each other good bye. The thought makes James's stomach turn.
But, "sure," he says. "That's fine.” At least she'll come home.
James shares a glance with Steve, which seems to confirm the same sentiments, "Yeah," Steve echoes, as if his opinion counts for anything. "Fine."

on aurora
aurora! she’s 1. the love of my life 2. incredible i care her and finally 3. all her lore is a mess. recently, i’ve been bothered by the lack of aurora-centric fics- there’s a few, but they’re all nastyaurora- but i’ve realized that’s not really a fault of the fandom! aurora is difficult to write and hard to learn things about! so, i’ve decided to make this meta on her!
it has two sections; history, which is more lore-focused red stringing, and characterization, which gathers some of her canon thoughts and reactions on things in an attempt to help people write her.
a large amount of this is based on things maki has said on the discord, which are both partially secret and of dubious canonicity, so please keep that in mind! (and assume that when a source is not cited, that is the reason).
in addition, i have written the aurora’s wiki page, which includes a list of physical features! this is helpful for anything set onboard.
history
terra
aurora was born as a moon! moons being weaponized is apparently a thing that happens, so that’s likely how she’s a ship now, but the physics of all this are very strange. she seems to have grown up in the same way as a human, meeting carmilla as a baby and jonny and nastya when she was older. importantly, she was sentient as a moon, and this is before she had any sort of programmed ai! she wasn’t capable of speaking at that point, but that may have just been because of her very young age.
aurora and dr carmilla have known each other for a very long time. extrapolating from things maki has said, we can assume that aurora was a moon of terra, carmilla’s home planet. maki has implied in the discord that 1. terra used to have two moons and 2. carmilla blew the other one up; that, combined with ‘i raised an orphan’ and a few other messages, could suggest that carmilla did the moon equivalent of killing aurora’s parent. perhaps because of this, carmilla took it upon herself to raise aurora. however, aurora is not a mechanism. as a alternative theory (though not a mutually exclusive one) there are a few messages about carmilla ‘creating life’ in discussions of aurora; we know carmilla didn’t assist with aurora’s birth, but it’s possible, as they are moons, that rather than already being there aurora was created from one of the fragments of the moon carmilla destroyed.
cyberia
we don’t know what happened between aurora and carmilla that made them separate, or how aurora ended up in cyberia; however, we know quite a lot about what happened there.
a large amount of it can be found in the fiction ‘the ghost in the machine’. the first thing there that i will address is that aurora’s sentience was actively inhibited rather than increased by her programming. as noted above, we know she was sentient as a moon, and the fiction repeatedly pushed that cyberia did not have fully fledged artificial intelligences, or if they did did not treat them as people. she is also said to have ‘hard-coded inorganic response patterns‘ coded into her, which are likely things similar to the toy soldier’s compulsion to follow orders. needless to say, that was most likely not a good situation for her to be in. it’s difficult to speak on this without getting too far into my headcanons, but my thoughts are that she was very dehumanized, most likely turned into a warship against her will, and the one person who cared a small bit more about her only did so as a project/experiment, which is equally as bad.
speaking of which, let’s discuss that! we meet aurora’s programmer, specialist 278 tereshkova, in ghost in the machine, where her distress call serves as the titular ghost. (i’m not going to summarize the actual fiction- it’s 1152 words and quite well written, if you want to read it!) the one direct line we have about her relationship with aurora is this- ‘[Aurora’s] software engineers never needed art either, although Specialist 278 Tereshkova thought of programming like lacework.‘, which suggests that 1. tereshkova had a bit more focus/care on aurora specifically but 2. still viewed her in a dehumanizing lens and likely contributed to aurora’s suffering. this is supported by the fact that aurora did not talk about her or attempt to help her when she was dying on the ship.
we actually have a large amount of information about who tereshkova was as a person! this is because she coded the mechanisms’ blog, (as in specifically, the wordpress one with posts archived on their website) and in a way that makes her personality show. well, what is her personality, you may ask? ...incredibly passive-aggressive and annoying. it’s so funny i love it. (’tales of the blogbot’) (sample blog post). we know the mechs are able to reprogram it, though with difficulty (1 / 2), and nastya actually mentions communicating with it (x), which goes unaddressed.
joining the mechanisms
moving on: when jonny and carmilla go to cyberia, carmilla tasks him with stealing aurora. (’how the aurora was won’). this could be because carmilla recognizes aurora; in fact, getting her back could have been the entire reason why they went to cyberia in the first place, with nastya being a bonus.
the aurora is most likely based upon the historical ship of the same name. (wikipedia). said ship fired the first shot of the october revolution, signalling the assault on the winter palace. this is the revolution nastya died in (both historical anastasia and mechs nastya, though i’m referring to the latter here). this suggests, because jonny stole her from the cyberian navy rather than revolutionists, that jonny and/or carmilla decided to fight in the revolution. this ties in with the theory that carmilla was purposefully sabotaging the mechanisms’ past lives (i have not written on this and do not plan to, but it’s a fairly common one) or it could also be viewed as several other things, including them just finding it a fun idea. this is contradicted by ghost in the machine, in which tereshkova says that an already supposed-to-be dead nastya was one of the people boarding the ship- however, that bit of ghost in the machine does not line up with any of the other canon.
characterization
any attempt to tell people how to write her is obviously going to be dependent on my own personal views and headcanons, but i’ve tried to compile as much canon as possible to let people make their own decisions.
in ‘the aurora strikes’, aurora is the one who advocates for the mechanisms to help briar rose. there’s an additional line in ouat(is) live, ‘she cannot bear to see another biomechanical organism in pain’, that points to her being sympathetic towards briar rose, and/or having high empathy. (it’s important to note here that empathy and sympathy are not synonyms- empathy is literally feeling someone else’s emotions to some degree, and so aurora having high empathy would be a slightly more literal take on that line). either way, she makes the mechanisms help briar rose, pointing to her being more compassionate/having more morals than most of the other mechanisms.
the fiction ‘a bedtime story’ is the one with the largest amount of dialogue from aurora. the main thing we can learn about her character here, besides the physical features of the ship, is what her speech patterns are like. they’re a bit strange, and read very much like an ai is speaking. in addition, we know aurora is comfortable enough around nastya to let nastya edit her programming, which given the cyberia section above could definitely be interpreted as a big deal.
this facebook post is interesting, because in the comments we learn aurora’s reaction to nastya leaving to destroy cyberia. (if you didn’t know about that bit of nastya’s story, ‘drive the cold winter away’ is here and ‘cyberian demons’ is here.) we don’t know if aurora was aware of nastya’s plan, though she likely was, but either way, her response was to become quiet and stay very cagey about it.
edit: a few small points i forgot! aurora has a voice + can communicate with the crew beyond nastya (ghost in the machine) and apparently has the same amount/brand of chaos as nastya (discord messages).
there isn’t too much else on what aurora’s like, given that she’s not an actual band member, but these three things are a good starting point. i could find a few more, but at that point it would just be a compilation of links to very minor mentions or bits of dialogue that don’t give very much of an actual insight to aurora’s character.
thank you for reading! aurora is one of my favorite characters and i hope to see more fic about her in the future!

Hongjoong’s Angels - Hongjoong w/ f! Yeosang + f! San
-req by @pirate-hongjoong
Pairing: Platonic Hongjoong (Speaking in italics) + f! Yeosang + f! San + Female Reader (ft. the rest of Ateez)
Summary: The angels are about as elite as they come, but all of them are at risk now. For a mission that they would have assigned a dozen angels to, it comes down to just three. Would that be enough to prevent their whole world from falling apart though?
Warnings: Spies, violent themes, espionage, guns, suggestive themes, seduction, kidnapping, breaking and entering, fight scenes, tasers, explosions, lies, missiles, betrayal, some member x member themes (the couple is a secret to prevent spoilers), death.
Word Count: 8,086
Note: I still have not watched the most recent movie and this is an original piece, so please don’t give me backlash for it. I was very excited to do this though, because the original Charlie’s Angels movies were my childhood, so this seemed very fun.
“Once upon a time there were three very different little girls....”
“I’m sorry the only spot we have open is for a mascot.” The head cheerleader mocked, but Yeosang simply smiled, her braces on full display.
“Oh my god, that’s great though! It’ll be so much fun! And I still get to dance!” Yeosang practically bounded out of the hall, tripping over her own feet at the entrance and falling flat on the ground.
---
“Ladies and Gentleman, that does it. Your winning rider is Choi San on her prized horse Blue Ballad. The youngest yet to win this competition.” The announcer called over the sound system. Choi San standing proudly on the podium for photos with her horse standing behind her, taking in the applause.
---
“Y/L/N Y/N! You get in here right now young lady!” The principle called from her office, you smirking as you walked in and plopped down opposite her, “ Would you explain to me why we have you on camera spray painting the school wall?”
You snickered as she showed you the film they had, “Oh look that’s my favorite part.” You muse as you watch the clip of you giving the camera the bird before spray painting over it.
---
“Who grew up to be three very different women...”
Yeosang held the little hairless kitten in her arms, giggling at it as people gave her strange looks in passing.
“Maybe you should put that one down Yeosang, no one’s gonna adopt...it....”
“Awe, but there’s nothing wrong with her. Besides she’s so cute...and she doesn’t do that...”Yeosang counters gesturing to one of the hairballs from the other cats in the shop.
---
“Prep OR3 and tell them I’m on my way. We have to move people, this is life or death! Now scrub me in!” San huffs, washing her hands, as one of the assistants puts the gloves and scrubs on for her. San opening the door to the operating room with her back to not contaminate anything.
“Alright, let’s do this.”
---
“Hi, welcome to Good Burger. What can I get for you today?” Y/N droned over the drive-thru headset in the same monotone voice you did everyday, with a huff.
The car pulling up moments later, a rambunctious group of young men in the car, “Hey sweetheart, why don’t you give us a show with that meal?”
You gave them a deadpan look, before holding up the paper bag with their order in it and shaking it, throwing it into the window of their car before closing your drive-thru window with a fake smile and walking away.
“What they have in common is that they’re brilliant, they’re beautiful, and they work for me. My name is Hongjoong.”
“Good morning, angels.”
“Good morning Hongjoong!” You three replied in unison, sitting on the couch across from the little speaker. The device is your only connection to the mystery man that was your boss.
“So Hongjoong, what do you have for us today?” San questions, hugging your arm slightly as she sits to your right, eager to get a new assignment.
“Well, angels, we’ve recently been hired by Jeong Yunho, CEO of Jeong Technologies. They’re currently the largest private technology and information firm around. Their lead engineer Song Mingi was kidnapped, there’s footage of three assailants taking him from the front of Jeong Technologies science building the other night and there has been no sign of him since.”
“There any leads so far? Anyone who wants to see Jeong Technologies fall?” You ask, looking over the tape on the screen one last time, watching the poor engineer get shoved into the van by some masked men.
“Bosley hasn’t given you the files yet, has he?” Hongjoong chuckles over the speaker, “Where has my good friend gone off to now?”
“Bosley? I thought you told me your name was Wooyoung?” Yunho’s brows furrow as he walks in with the man in question.
“It is my name is Wooyoung. I’m simply in the Bosley family....it’s a term of endearment at this point.” Wooyoung shrugs, gesturing for Yunho to sit on the couch opposite of you, “I was just greeting our guest Hongjoong, no need to rush anyone.”
“Well, angels, it looks like you’re in capable hands. If you need anything, Wooyoung will provide you with it. I’ll be in touch.” With that, the speaker was off, and Wooyoung was handing you each of your respective files on the case. Almost identical, but each with slightly unique details based on your unique skill sets.
“So, you’re Jeong Yunho then?” Yeosang looks at him while offering her hand, each of you following suit and flustering the young, shy CEO who shakes your hands.
“I-I am. I-I just want to say that whatever you girls need to get him back, I’m happy to help. Mingi is more than an employee, he’s also a friend.” Yunho is flustered at first, but slowly it changes to concern for his missing friend.
“If you don’t mind me asking then, is that why he is so special? I mean, a kidnapping is usually handled by the police, so what about this makes it a better fit for us?” San inquires, barely looking up from the file finding bits of information that might prove useful.
“Not exactly. You see, we’re a private firm, but we recently landed a government project, and that’s what Mingi was working on. The intelligence involved in this project cannot get out, but Mingi’s the only one who currently knows how to access it or lock it down. Which is why we need to get him back before they can get it out of him.” Yunho explains, catching the attention of all the angels.
“What kind of information are we talking about here?” You finally dare to ask, not sure you’d like any answer that he would give you.
“Potentially limitless information. The program is designed to screen through all sources public and private without interfering with people’s privacy. What I mean is no person is scouring through people’s information. It uses facial recognition and voice recognition software to track people internationally based on the specs you give it. That person’s trail. With hopes of finding the most wanted criminals who have fallen off the face of the earth. When it pings with that, all the computer saves is the clip with their voice or face. Then it shares that with those who need to find that person. Without sharing private information about the person whose device it was with said investigators. Like an anonymous tip phone call of sorts, but it also provides a location. However, in theory, those safeties can be removed and you could potentially access any information on anyone from anywhere in the world.” Yunho worries his lip between his teeth as he explains the purpose of their latest program.
“And Mingi is the only one who knows the system well enough to do anything with it? To allow or prevent that from happening?” Yeosang sucks in a breath at the sorrowful nod that Yunho answers her with.
“Who would have the most to gain from kidnapping Mingi? People who knew of this program? Of its potential? Or, just have something to gain by taking him?” You look for the page you know you saw when skimming the file, the one that listed off Yunho and Mingi’s enemies.
“Honestly, we kept a tight lid on the information flow only those working on the project and myself knew. Everyone was very adamant about not discussing it outside of the work area for safety reasons, so unless someone got that information elsewhere, I don’t know. However, there is one person I have in mind...Park Seonghwa. My leading competitor, he’s been known to send spies into our staff to steal ideas and information. I wouldn’t put it past him to kidnap our lead engineer in hopes of getting ideas to put out before us.” Yunho shakes his head, “That man never gives up, I’m telling you.”
The angels nod in unison, turning to Wooyoung and handing back the files.
“Yunho we’re going to need access to your building. We’re gonna see if they left anything behind where they took Wooyoung.” San explains, to which Yunho immediately agrees.
“Also, we’ll need to check your systems to see if anyone did get in and access confidential information,” Yeosang added before the two looked at you.
“Then we’ll check Park Industries too, just in case. Though before that, we should probably make sure your home is secure, for all we know they could be after you too.” You try not to worry Yunho too much while still telling him the reality of the situation.
“Alright, angels, let’s move.” Yeosang jumps up, catching the keys that Wooyoung tosses to her so that the four of you can head out to Jeong Technologies to start unraveling this mystery.
“Find anything in here?” Yeosang asks, joining you and San from checking out the scene where Mingi was finally grabbed.
“Good luck, angels! I’ll be checking in!” Wooyoung calls after you before sighing as he sits down again, left all alone now.
“I’m not seeing any immediate signs of someone snooping around, but not that we’re in. I'll have the computer at the base run a more thorough analysis and let us know,” San responds, looking to you and Yunho.
“I haven’t found any bugs or signs of forced entry if there was something here, it would have to be moving in and out on an employee. I say we check them out, just to be safe.” Your suggestion is met with nods from the other two, “What about out front?”
“Ah, I found a few things...our van had some specialty tires on it based on the treads it left behind. We could look for suppliers and cross-reference based on that to find who’s van it is. Also, there was some debris left I’m assuming when the kidnappers jumped out of the van. We’ll see if these little plants can tell us anything about where they were before being here.” Yeosang proudly beams, holding up her prize.
“Okay, why don’t you two get those back to the base and Wooyoung. I’ll go check out Yunho’s house and make sure it’s safe for him there.” You insist, causing the two to roll their eyes slightly at you.
“Please, you just want to go with him because you think he’s hot,” Yeosang mumbles, making San chuckle while you fluster and throw a glare at her.
“Not my fault, the yummy CEO hired us! Now get out of here.” You hiss quietly at the two before shooing them as they laugh. Before turning to Yunho, who was flustered and blushing after watching that exchange.
“C-Come on, I’ll drive us.” He offers leading the way out of the building and to his car so that he can drive you to his home. Of course, solely for professional reasons. Pulling up to a large modern home after not too long, it somewhat secluded in the woods. Yunho welcomes you in and helps you with your jacket, offering you something to drink while you immediately set to work and stumbling across an interesting photo.
“Isn’t this Park Seonghwa with you?” You question holding the photo up to Yunho, who nods in response, only further intriguing you, “I thought you two were rivals?”
“We are now, but things weren’t always that way. In fact, I’d prefer if they still weren’t.” Yunho sighs softly, holding out a glass to you, “We went to school together growing up, even picked the same university to attend. Honestly, he was more like a brother to me than anything. Until he tried to steal my final during our last year...he was found out and kicked out of the school, but money spared him most of the consequences. He blamed me for what happened, though, and now it seems he wants to get me back in any way at all.”
You nod, placing the picture back down, feeling worse for the Yunho now, “So you lost one close friend already, and now the other is missing...that must be tough.” When Yunho nods, you reach out to gently squeeze his arm in reassurance, “Don’t worry, we’ll get Mingi back, and we won’t let anything happen to you. The house is clean, and I’m leaving you this panic button. If anything is wrong, you just press it, and the closest one of us will come right away.”
“So if I pressed it right now, that would mean you would come, right?” Yunho asks, stepping closer as you start to step away, flustering you some.
“Well, yes, but I just checked the whole house Yunho and nothing wrong.” You chuckle despite being shy, thanks to him.
“Yes, there is.” Yunho blurts, a little too quickly, making you raise a brow in question, “W-What if I don’t feel safe being here all alone? I-I think you should stay for a bit...y-you know just in case.”
He was so impossibly close right now, standing right before you. Not even letting you respond, though, before the two of you were kissing. Your coat slipping out of your arms again as you slipped them around his neck, not letting him go again.
Yunho pouts, hearing your phone ring, and you chuckle, answering it.
“Y/N, we need you back here, we’re going to regroup and talk to Hongjoong. How far out are you?” San asks over the phone, and she and Yeosang finish up in the lab, looking over their results again.
“Not too far, I’m just at Yunho’s.” You answer before cursing internally at giving that away, while the CEO besides you blushes.
“Still? Why? Was something wrong?” San’s voice is teasing, but you know she genuinely wanted to know in case there was an issue, and you just hadn’t gotten the chance to ask for their help yet.
“N-No, nothing’s wrong...I-I’m heading over now.” You quickly hang up before she can question you anymore, giving Yunho an apologetic look, “Well, duty calls. If anything happens, though, hit the panic button, alright?”
Yunho nods, slipping his arm around your waist and pulling you in for another kiss, “ Be careful out there, okay? If you have to leave me, then at least come back in one piece.”
“I will.” You give him one last kiss before slipping out of his grasp to leave, knowing there was still plenty to do before Yunho would be safe and have his friend back.
San and Yeosang, smirking at you as you walked back into the base, their looks suggestive, now armed with the knowledge that you had spent the night at Yunho’s place. You sighed with a soft blush and brushed them off, taking your seat with them for yet another morning. Wooyoung, laughing, and accepting the incoming call.
“Good morning, angels.”
“Good morning, Hongjoong!”
“Do you girls have an update on the situation?”
“We looked into the tires, and it leads back to Park Industries. They have an arrangement with one of the shops they like this specific brand on all their trucks and vans. They also have vans matching the make and model of the van that was used in the kidnapping.” San closes her file on the track report, having nailed Park Seonghwa or at least his company to taking Mingi the question now was just where.
“The plant material was interesting, it allowed me to narrow down to a fifty-mile area where they had been before, the only problem was that any way we cross-referenced things, in that area we found no connection to Park Industries at all, whether directly or otherwise.” Yeosang added with a shrug, “Unless they’ve managed to keep that hidden very well from us.”
“The computer didn’t come up with anything either. It looks as though Park Industries never got into Jeong Technologies computer.” Wooyoung continues before looking at you, now that they had pretty much covered all the leads before speaking up for you, “Oh, and Yunho’s house has been cleared.”
“It seems like whoever is hiding those details from us is doing a very good job of it. Get into Park Industries and see if you can find the last few things that you need to find Mingi, we might not have a lot of time left before they get that information.”
“We’re on it, Hongjoong!”
“So what’s the play then, angels?” Wooyoung inquires, leaning across the desk and smiling at you, “And what do you need for it?”
“You know...we could actually use your help on this one, Wooyoung.” You smiled at him, “How would you like to play a young, up and coming CEO? Willing to give Park Industries exclusive access to specialty supplies?”
“I’ll be your assistant, there to help you if anything happens and seduce Seonghwa enough to get the key for San to get in with.” You reassured Wooyoung as you three pull up the building specs.
“I’ll distract the others around, so San will just have to worry about security making their rounds and cameras on the outside. Once inside the room, though, there is a laser grid, moving, very high end. The code to disable them changes every five minutes. so it’s not likely we’ll be able to get that unless Y/N can manage it in Seonghwa’s office somehow.” Yeosang added before looking to San.
“I’ll be in and out with what we need before you even know it.” San nods looking at Wooyoung, “So what do you say Woo, you in?”
“Well...whatever the angels need, the angels get.” Wooyoung shrugs before chuckling softly, “I’m in.”
Sitting in your van outside of Park Industries and doing final preparations, San spotted something watching the building for any last-minute security changes. She couldn’t be sure, though, until she pulled up a still from the kidnapping video.
“Guys, I just realized something we’ve been missing.” San turns to the rest of you, showing the clip where a snake tattoo is visible on the kidnapper’s ankle, “We should have run with this from the start.”
“Well, what good does that do us now? We can’t call this mission off.” Yeosang frowns softly and San tsks, shaking her head.
“We won’t, we just would have gotten here sooner.” San zooms in on the building security guard from the camera hidden in the side of the van, “Considering this is the tattooed man.”
You look at the screen before initiating the facial recognition software and grabbing molar mics for you and Wooyoung, “When you figure it out, let me know. I’m meeting Wooyoung now.”
You slipped out of the side of the van that faced away from the building, sneaking a few blocks away to where Wooyoung was waiting in the driver’s seat of a black Lamborgini Huracan. Smoothing over your dress one last time, you get into the passenger seat, handing him his mic and earpiece before putting on your own.
“Ready, Mr. Jung?” You smirked softly at Wooyoung, who chuckles in response, starting up the car.
“Honestly, if it means getting to do stuff like this and driving nice cars all the time, I might just have to tag along more.” He drives off to head towards the main entrance of Park Industries, you two needed to be the first to go in.
“Y/N, we got a match over facial recognition. His name is Choi Jongho, he hasn’t been working for Seonghwa long, but they have a history. We better keep an eye on him though, he has a pretty remarkable rep. Numerous fighting styles mastered, history in dealing with arms. Keep an eye on him, don’t let him catch you off guard.” You hear San over the mic, knowing Wooyoung does too as you notice him tense while driving.
“Relax Wooyoung, just act natural, and nothing will go wrong. Besides, even if it did, you have the three of us there to protect you.” You assured him, leading him to take a breath and relax slightly, as he pulled up. Parking the car and the both of you got out. Showing Jongho your identification in passing, him eyeing you both up for a moment before opening the door to let you through.
“We’re in, work your magic girls.” You whisper, before taking over at the front desk, “Hello, we’re here for the meeting with Mr. Park. His 2 o’clock.”
The lady raised a brow at you, clearly not impressed until Wooyoung spoke up, “Is there a problem here? I’m a busy man, but I made the time to meet with CEO Park out of professional courtesy, I’d appreciate it if you made it happen, doll.”
She flusters, stuttering a bit behind her desk, “O-Of course CEO Jung, my apologies. It won’t happen again.”
“Good work Wooyoung!” Yeosang cheered over the mic as the lady led the way for you both through the building. That being her cue as she slipped out of the van next. Heading up to the building with a blinding smile as she stopped in front of Jongho.
“Hi, I think I’m supposed to go in here, yes?” Yeosang fumbles through her bag for show, before finding her company id for him, “It’s my first day, so I’m just a little lost.”
Her helpless giggle and clueless innocent nature must have done the trick, Jongho scanning her id and even giving a small smile back before getting the door for her. San drove the van around to the back, preparing to make her entrance.
“Let me know when we’re good, Yeosang.” She says, grabbing her ‘delivery’ and going in through the service entrance, before slipping into a bathroom to change into professional clothes, hiding her face from cameras the entire time.
“Give me five minutes,” Yeosang responds, stumbling into the room where the various cubicles were by the mainframe, blushing and giggling as people start to stare. Yeosang works her charms, pouting softly and twirling her hair, “I’m new, and I think I managed to get lost. Do any of you think you could help me?”
Yeosang played further into the act as they scrambled over each other to get to her, and show her the various areas of the building. More than eager to be around a beautiful woman after being cooped up at their desk for hours without end. Giving her verbal cue to San who slipped out after the group had passed and headed in the opposite direction as them, just waiting for the key to be dropped off.
“You make a very appealing deal, Jung Wooyoung. Draw it up and send it to me, I’m more than interested in it.” Seonghwa smiles from his spot across from Wooyoung.
“That won’t be necessary, my assistance already drew it up. I hope it meets your liking?” Wooyoung gestures you forward. You round the desk and lean forward to place and open the drawn up papers on the desk, letting Seonghwa see your form in the process. It is a good distraction as your free hand slipped the key card off his desk, before taking your spot besides Wooyoung again. Slipping the card into his hand as Seonghwa reads and signs the document, Wooyoung signs afterward before collecting up the document, as his phone rings.
“If you’ll excuse me, I forgot I have another appointment. However, my assistant can stay to discuss anything else about the contract with you.” Wooyoung shakes Seonghwa’s hand before answering the fake call and stepping out of the room to hand the card off to San and get out of the building. The exchange, going successfully.
“Just keep him occupied for me Y/N.” San moves towards the room, hiding her face from view as she slips in to look for access. The easy part passed now just came the harder part of slipping through the lasers.
You trailed your fingertips over Seonghwa’s desk as you moved back to the same side as him, “Is there anything I can help you with, anything at all?”
Your hands, moving to massage his shoulders, noticing something sitting proudly on his desk that you hadn’t the first time. The same picture you had seen at Yunho’s house, of the two of them together.
“Oh, angel, as enticing as that sounds coming from such a beauty, I’ll have to pass. After all, I’ve got so much to do you know...with kidnapping people and all.” Seonghwa grabs your wrist-twisting you around and pinning your front to the desk beneath him. The others heard what happened clear as day.
“I’ll get Wooyoung out, you just finish up getting what we came for San and then help Y/N if necessary.” Yeosang is already in the ladies' room, slipping up and into a vent to make her way out without being swarmed again, dropping out and finding Wooyoung, but too late as Jongho pulls him through a door and shoves him into a van, while a man blocks Yeosang.
“Jongho got Wooyoung.” She announces, flipping a switch in all the angels. None of them were happy that their Wooyoung had been taken.
“San get that stuff back to base, we’ll clean up here.” You say before twisting enough to elbow him in the face. Still, missing something, though, as Seonghwa tased you in the side. The world, going black and leaving the mission up to the other two for the time being.
Slowly you come too, eyes shifting around for any sign of Wooyoung or Mingi as you do. Instead, you hear someone tsking, followed by footsteps, drawing your attention forward and away from the dirtied surroundings. Yunho before you, as he leans down towards your face, pinching your jaw between his thumb and forefinger to make you look at him instead of at Seonghwa behind him.
“I may have underestimated you, girls...I thought it would be easier to snatch all of you at once. The others got away, though, with something that belongs to us, and you’re going to help us get it back, angel.” Yunho’s glare only hardens further when you smirk at him, feeling the molar mic still in your mouth, even if they took your earpiece, knowing it’d help Yeosang and San even more.
“See that was your problem, you underestimated us. Besides, there are more than just three angels, a lot more.” You shrug, leaning back in your chair, knowing it was only a matter of time before help showed. Not that you couldn’t break out of the chair if you wanted to, but it was more fun letting them think they’d won and spilling everything to you while you learned everything about their security from the inside.
Seonghwa stepped over and joined Yunho, slipping his arms around Yunho’s waist and resting his chin on Yunho’s shoulder, “Oh, we know Y/N. After all, once an angel always an angel, right? And there are quite a few from what we can tell.”
Seonghwa tilts Yunho’s body away from you, letting you see the monitors working on trying to break into Hongjoong and the angel’s database, not able to get much more than the number of angels at this point. You knew security was the best there was.
“If only there were a way to get access to their personal information, though? You know...so anyone who wishes could get revenge on the angels...oh wait, we have this.” Seonghwa tauntingly waves Wooyoung’s phone in front of your face, “Almost like when Hongjoong calls, we can use his voice to gain access to the system or something of the sort.”
Your heart races, knowing that was the one way to gain access to everything there, even to information on angels who retired, “Why would you want to do that to the angels? Just money? There’s plenty of easier to access information you could sell than this.”
Yunho scoffs, rolling his eyes, “No angel, this one is personal. Seonghwa’s sister was an angel, on a team much like yours...only her team didn’t bring her home. So we’re gonna teach the rest of you a lesson.”
“Once I find the two that left my sister, though...I’ll handle them myself.” Seonghwa hisses before letting Yunho go, gripping on your chair as his gaze darkens, “Now let me guess, they took what they got from me back to your little base and are going to try and find us?”
“Try?” It’s your turn to scoff now, “Don’t tell me you’re already underestimating us again, they won’t try...they will find us. And then breaking into the database would be the easiest challenge you’d have to overcome today.”
Yunho clicks his tongue, pulling a gun out of the back of his pants before putting it up to your temple, the click of the safety echoing in the room, “Just answer the question, or we won’t let you see any more of what we have planned. Which would be a real shame considering things are just now starting to get interesting.”
You sigh softly, gaze shifting to Yunho for a moment, before back at Seonghwa, “Yeah, that’s what they would do.”
Seonghwa smirking as he leans back, “See angel, that wasn’t so hard now, was it?” His eyes flick over to Yunho now, “Come on, babe, put the gun away. The little angel is cooperating now, and we want her to see just what’s happening, don’t we love?”
Yunho rolls his eyes, putting the gun away again, pulling out the duck tape and toying with it some, “ I hope you know, you won’t be able to depend on Yeosang and San much longer...they’ve got their own problems to deal with.”
He nods to Seonghwa, who pulls up the coordinates of your base, turning to you again, “I’ll give you a moment to look and say goodbye, they’re about to get quite the bang.”
“Wha-” Your statement is cut off by Yunho putting the duck tape over your mouth and putting a finger over where your lips would be, shushing you.
“Shh, isn’t that much better?” Yunho chuckles as Seonghwa clicks enter on the keyboard, launching a missile straight at the coordinates of your home base. Leaving, you to hope that Yeosang and San heard enough to know to get out by now, but not quite sure if they did.
“We gotta move fast San, who knows what that could mean,” Yeosang calls, snatching one of the bags of supplies from the base and slinging it over her shoulder so they could have something while they rushed out.
“I know, I’m shutting this down now. I’ll be right behind you.” San responds, finishing up, before grabbing her bag and rushing out behind Yeosang. The two almost at the car by the time the missile hits the base, the force of the blast throwing them tumbling to the ground. Thankfully, though, with little more to worry about than a few scratches.
“Yep, they definitely want us dead.” Yeosang grunts, picking herself up off the ground with a groan and dusting off.
“Well, unlucky for them, I know where they are now...Seonghwa didn’t have any buildings in that radius, but Yunho does...that’s where we’re going.” San pulls herself off the ground too, before getting in the car and putting the location in. Letting Yeosang drive as they head towards the location, and parking a safe distance away from where they wouldn’t be seen.
“Security looks pretty tight, we won’t be able to just storm our way in without help...”Yeosang sighs, shaking her head as she lowers the binoculars she was using to get a better view of the front entrance.
“So, we’ll just have to make our own way in then.” San shrugs, “Come on, I have an idea.”
Seonghwa spotted the tear that rolled down your face before you could spot it and chuckled, “Aw, who knew angels could cry~”
He mocked you before having Jongho bring Mingi in and shove him into the chair in front of the monitors before going back to guard Wooyoung until he was needed, “It’s almost time, Mingi. I’m going to need you to get us set up. Or there’s gonna be consequences.”
Yunho smirks playfully, brushing a finger over your cheek and collecting the tear, “You know you were rather pretty that night...but I think I prefer you this kind of broken.”
You glared at him, pulling away from his touch, which only made him chuckle. Until Jongho brought Wooyoung in. Seonghwa handed him the phone that was hardwired to the headset he handed Yunho, and the computer.
“You’re going to call Hongjoong for us.” Yunho demands of Wooyoung, pointing the gun at him. Wooyoung looks at you, with big frightened eyes. You nodded as you spotted a flash of Yeosang’s blonde hair in the security camera for the attic of the building. Seonghwa noticed the same thing and sent Jongho to deal with it. Wooyoung dials Hongjoong’s number, but when there’s no answer his hands shake, going to call again until Seonghwa stops him.
“Let Hongjoong call back, it’ll work better for our plan.” Seonghwa insists watching and waiting until the phone rings again, gesturing for Yunho to answer and Wooyoung to keep his mouth shut.
“H-Hello? This is Yunho.” He puts the front on again, despite grinning wickedly at you, “Wooyoung can’t come to the phone this second.”
“Oh, hi Yunho, this is Hongjoong. Are you with the angels again?”
“Yeah, they had a lead, and since they weren’t sure where it was secure, they just had me go back to the base and hang out with Wooyoung. I think he went to the kitchen or something though, he shouldn’t take too long, hopefully, that’s okay.” Yunho watches Seonghwa and Mingi for the signal saying they got enough to use, to get into the system.
“That’s perfectly fine, Yunho. I’m glad you can be someplace safe right now. I don’t mind waiting for a few moments. Have the angels been doing alright?”
“Oh, the angels are perfect. Thank you so much for all the help, I honestly don’t know what I would do without you guys.” Yunho answers, and you here Hongjoong give an intrigued hum.
“Wonderful...you said you were at the base with Wooyoung, right?”
“That’s right, I think I hear him coming back right now if you want to wait. Or I can take a message for you?” Yunho licks his lips as Mingi tells Seonghwa that they need just a little bit more.
“That’s interesting cause I thought I heard that the base just blew up.”
Your eyes widen, Wooyoung prepares to yell for Hongjoong to get help, but not quick enough as Yunho hangs up, “You’re gonna have to make that work Mingi, and fast. I don’t think we have a lot of time.”
“I-I don’t know if I can...”Mingi’s hands shake with fear as he works at the computer, Yunho huffing, impatiently as he puts the gun to Mingi’s head now.
“I don’t believe that was a question, Mingi. Now do it.” Yunho insists, taking over and making Seonghwa chuckle with a smirk.
“You’re so hot when you’re pissed.” Seonghwa winks at the other man, the pair cocky until Yeosang drops down from the roof, behind Seonghwa, cocking a gun at his head.
“Put it down, Yunho.” She glares at him, Yunho grumbling, but doing as she asks, only because it’s for Seonghwa, “Now kick it over to Wooyoung...Wooyoung I want you to take the bullets out.”
Wooyoung is obviously scared out of his mind. He does as he’s told, though, knowing that right now Yeosang has the upper hand. The girl chuckling afterward, the three of you from the agency, knowing something that the others didn’t...angels don’t use guns. Wooyoung quickly moved to undo your ties before they had a chance to get the upper hand again, so at least the odds would be a bit more even.
“How did you get past Jongho, though?” Yunho asked, only further infuriated by the current situation. Yeosang’s brows furrowing at the question.
“What do you mean, I never saw...”Her words fade out, glancing at the security cameras to see Jongho making it up to where Yeosang had come in. Her eyes, widening knowing that San was up there right now. Seonghwa, taking the opportunity to grab her wrist that held the gun and twisting it around until she dropped it, picking it up and pointing it at Yeosang.
“That was a mistake. You should have just run away, little angel.” Seonghwa hisses before pulling the trigger, thrown off by the click sound that it gave instead of going off.
“Wow, for having a sister as an angel, you don’t know much hm?....angels don’t use guns.” You smirk, expecting a fight, but you don’t get one. Seonghwa simply snatched the drive with the locations from the angel’s database on it and clicked enter again.
“That one’s special......that one’s Hongjoong’s.” He growls before running off, with Yunho rushing behind him.
“Wooyoung, get Mingi out of here and call Hongjoong to try and warn him in time. Y/N and I are going after them since San is trying to get to the angels and warn them if she can...plus she has her hands full with the henchman.” Yeosang tells him before you and Yeosang are racing after the two men who hold the key to all the angels’ past and present, confidential information.
San was linked into the satellite they had been using to access the angels’ database, not there in time to stop them, but able to copy and document everything they had gotten. That way, they could get to or warn the angels at risk before the information got out if they weren’t able to stop Yunho and Seonghwa. Seemingly clueless to the fact that Jongho was coming up behind her. Only noticing something when he pulls out a knife, the metal reflecting sunlight flooding in from the window in front of her, sending a glare over her laptop screen.
San noticed and spun to sweep Jongho’s leg, knocking him over in surprise and dropping the knife over the edge of the floor, dropping floors below. She’s quick to close the laptop and secure it in the case, slipping the strap around her form, where it could safely sit on her back. Jongho flips back onto his feet, to find her tying a knot into a rope hanging from one of the beams in the roof. Stopping her from going anywhere, by grabbing her hair and pulling her back so harshly she stumbles back and out of his hold with a yelp. It is a miracle she didn’t crush the laptop, but obvious that Jongho wasn’t going to let her get away without a fight.
San slipping on her gloves, getting an idea. When Jongho surges forward to get her again, she slips between his legs, sliding across the ground and grabbing the rope. It was supposed to be her way down, as the other end was secured to a sandbag. If Jongho didn’t want to let her slip away so easily, though, maybe he’d rather take that trip instead.
“You really can’t stay still, can you? You’re a real pain.” Jongho frowns, that turning to agitation when San smirks at him.
“Maybe you shouldn’t be so slow.” She taunts back, hoping to get the response she wants of him. Knowing she’d need an opening to be able to get the rope in place. Jongho gives her just that when he turns and kicks, aiming for her face. Only San ducks, the hand with the rope slipping around his foot, before pulling the knot tight as she rolls out of his way. Moving quickly to get on her feet again, jumping up and grabbing onto one of the beams before swinging and kicking full force at Jongho’s chest with both legs.
Jongho spills over the edge, plummeting stories down. San, bouncing off the edge after him and grabbing the bag as it reaches the top, now having to use Jongho as a counterweight.
Wooyoung and Mingi, stopping abruptly and shrieking when Jongho is suddenly hanging upside down in front of them before suddenly heading back up where he came from, soon replaced by San. The pair have paled in shock and fear, trembling as they look at San with shaky eyes.
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to join you, girls, on missions anymore.” Wooyoung’s voice is soft as he blinks at San. The whole experience, proving to be far more than he was used to or expecting.
San giggles and kisses his cheek, handing him the laptop bag, “You’re doing amazing, Woo. Take this and warn the other angels, I’m going to help Y/N and Yeosang. I’ll see you soon.”
With that, she runs off, leaving Wooyoung and Mingi to take the laptop and bolt for one of the cars while security was preoccupied with helping Yunho and Seonghwa out. Easily snatching one of their cars, Wooyoung hands Mingi the laptop bag.
“Hold on to that! We have some angels to save.”
Wooyoung pulls up to the carnage remaining at Hongjoong’s house, the whole place gone. He chews on his lip, uncertain where to go now. Until he gets a phone call, answering with furrowed brows.
“I’m sending you an address Wooyoung, meet me there...we’ll have everything we need to help our girls.”
Seonghwa and Yunho closed a door behind them and secured it so that Yeosang and Y/N couldn’t get through. Even as they tried to bust it down, the pair cursed as they can’t get it open, even together.
“Hold on! I’m coming.” San yells, watching the struggle from where she races to meet them, the trio trying again together now. It finally being enough to breach the barrier. The guards, turning along with Yunho and Seonghwa.
Yunho pushed Seonghwa towards the car that had been started right before the angels got through, “I’ll take care of them, just go get your revenge.”
“Yunho’s mine.” You tell the girls, eager to finally be able to pay back the man for the way he’d played you since the beginning of this entire involvement.
“I’ve got the guards, Yeo you go get Seonghwa,” San tells the other, who quickly snatches a motorcycle from one of the guards, slipping on a helmet and chasing after Seonghwa before anyone can stop her from doing so. Leaving San to handle roughly five guards unless you could finish Yunho quickly and get there to help her.
“Awe, is the little angel angry? That’s too bad.” Yunho jabs, evidently not at all fearful of you or the threat you pose to him, “After I kill you, I’m going to join Seonghwa in taking out each and every angel...painfully.”
“Show me your worst then, tough guy, cause I’m not going down without a fight.” You taunt right back, waiting for him to come closer. Though thrown off as his foot tosses a board up, kicking it in your direction, instead of coming straight for you. It's something you can easily deflect, but it hides Yunho’s form long enough that you aren’t prepared for him to be at you, metal chain in hand, and quickly wrapped around your throat. Leaving you gasping and squirming, barely able to turn around before he presses you against the wall, your hands gripping the metal tightly, trying to pull it off your neck enough to get a breath.
You’re lucky to get a foot on the wall, using the leverage and walking up the wall to flip over Yunho. The chains now in your hand instead of around your throat. You twist, pulling the chain, and Yunho along with and onto the ground. Hovering over him before landing a hard punch to knock him out, while he was still stunned.
“You okay, San?” You question hearing the sounds stop from the other group, the girl huffing as she flips her hair out of her face with a soft chuckle, before approaching footsteps.
“Yeah, just a normal day on the job. You good too?” She asks, watching you secure Yunho with the chains with a nod. Doing it on the off chance, he regained consciousness before someone came to get him. She laughs at his state, “Was it really necessary to leave a mark like that?”
“Yeah...it was.” You shrug, backing away from him to head towards another motorcycle sitting there and grabbing a helmet, “Come on, let’s go help, Yeo.”
Seonghwa spotted Yeosang in his rearview mirror as he drove away, the latter quickly working to close the gap between the two of them. Seonghwa moving to take a more public road now, weaving in and out of cars hoping Yeosang wouldn't spot one before it could hit her. It didn't matter, though, as she reached his Jeep, jumping off the bike, to grab onto the back of it. Yeosang holds on tightly as Seonghwa made a sudden turn trying to throw her off. Yeosang hanging on long enough to be able to pull herself up and into the back, though.
Just because Yeosang no longer had to worry about the risk of being flung off the car immediately, didn't mean she had time to catch her breath. She was quick to climb up, punching Seonghwa and trying to gain control over the wheel, though he was not thrown off for long, before shoving her back off him. Yeosang slamming back into the car door on the opposite side. It popped open just as she grabbed the frame of the car to pull herself back in. Shutting the door behind herself, but getting an idea from what had happened.
Yeosang grabbed the frame of the car, kicking across the center console to throw Seonghwa against the door on his side. It popped open like the other one had his grip on the wheel the only thing keeping him inside until she did it again at least. Seonghwa rolled out of the car as Yeosang hopped into the driver's seat and safely pulled it over and to a stop. You and San, reaching them as Seonghwa pulled himself back up.
"Hongjoong is gone and your base is gone. What can the three of you do to stop me at this point? You're alone and don't have anything." Seonghwa continues to refuse the fact that he didn't stand a chance. Rejecting defeat until the very end.
The three of you standing, side-by-side in front of him, in the signature angels ass-kicking pose. You shake your head, "You're wrong, Seonghwa. You're the only one here who's alone."
"Besides, once an angel, always an angel." A voice calls from behind Seonghwa. More angels, currently, and returned surrounding him down, "You picked the wrong fight."
The three of you looking at each other and smirking, before knocking Seonghwa out while he was distracted. Wooyoung and Mingi driving up, the former immediately jumping out, still frantic.
"I see you girls got reinforcements. Did I do alright? You're all fine, right?" Wooyoung questions looking over you girls, making you chuckle and nod, to which he breathes a soft sigh of relief.
"What about Hongjoong, is he okay?" Yeosang asks, voicing your worries. Wooyoung smiles, pulling out his phone and clicking the button.
"Hello, angels. Good work on another successful mission. I think you girls have earned yourselves a vacation... don't get too comfortable though, it's only until you get a new base."
"Thank you, Hongjoong! We're glad you're okay."
Wooyoung hangs up, turning back to the car as Mingi flusters and opens the door shyly for Yeosang. His cheeks tinted a bright pink, smiling softly at her as his eyes sparkle.
"T-Thank you for saving me." Mingi looks her right in the eyes, "M-Maybe I could make it up to you...o-over dinner sometime? U-Unless you're seeing someone?"
"Yeah." Yeosang smiles, before seeing his face fall and realizing how that sounded, "I-I mean, yeah, I'd love to do dinner or something... I-I'm not seeing anyone."
You and San roll your eyes, laughing softly. Before you finally speak up, "Come on you two, get in the car."
"Yeah, Hongjoong's giving us a vacation, and I want to soak in as much beach time as I can get before we're off again," San adds, Wooyoung rolling his eyes at your antics and getting in the driver's seat once more to drive the whole group of you off.
The vacation on Hongjoong this time, it being the least he could do to take care of his angels.

Is Reality a Simulation?
Okay, so I want to preface this post with: I am a computer scientist. I’m not a physicist. I want to talk about how and why the theory of reality being a simulation is ridiculous.
Main points you can read in the jump below (this will be long):
The people who argue reality is a simulation aren’t computer scientists (we have proof that reality isn’t a simulation... yes, really)
We are reaching a plateau in digital technological advancement
The technology needed to simulate the universe would require more matter than the universe holds
You are reading this post which is eliciting thoughts and feelings
Finally, I talk about the proof we have reality isn’t a simulation
Below the cut, I’ll go into detail.
The people who argue reality is a simulation aren’t computer scientists
I strongly believe that outsiders to a field can bring new insight. In this case, I think it comes from a lack of understanding of how computers “think” (your computer is “thinking” right now).
And yes, I’m choosing to focus on the philosophical explanation rather than the proofs reality isn’t a simulation because you won’t internalize the math required. But you will be able to see logical steps in reasoning with some light explanation. So, moving on...
When computer scientists and software engineers talk about computers “thinking”, we mean very specific things. Your computer has to prioritize tasks in a way that makes it feel seamless to you, the user. It’s making decisions. It’s thinking.
When other people talk about how computers “think”, they mean something more like how we think. Where decisions are a product of environment, past experience, personality and intention.
The problem we have with true AI is that we humans always give computers an intention and focus. When you are telling someone to do something they can’t refuse, it’s not free will when they do it.
We’ve reached a plateau in digital advancement
Have you noticed the trend of phones getting larger instead of smaller? This is because we’ve reached the limits of the law that says technology will get faster and smaller every year. That law is called Moore’s Law. What people fail to realize is Moore’s Law is not a straight line. It’s a logarithmic curve that eventually plateaus and ceases to get larger.
We fell below the pace predicted by Moore’s law in 2010. We slowed even further in 2015.
That makes sense though, right? I mean... At some point you get down to electrons and the things that make up electrons and then how are you supposed to get smaller? I mean, we are experimenting with using the density of electrons to designate 0 and 1 binary in computers.
This is what Gordon Moore (the “Moore” in “Moore’s Law”) said in 2005:
In terms of size [of transistors] you can see that we're approaching the size of atoms which is a fundamental barrier, but it'll be two or three generations before we get that far—but that's as far out as we've ever been able to see. We have another 10 to 20 years before we reach a fundamental limit. By then they'll be able to make bigger chips and have transistor budgets in the billions.
Just as he predicted, in 2015 transistors slowed to a crawl. The amount of technology we can pack into your phone is probably as good as it gets until we ditch computers altogether.
The technology needed to simulate the universe would require more matter than the universe holds
I’m not really gonna explain this one. I kind of did it above.
This section is just for the nerds. This will not make sense to people who aren’t nerds. You can skip it.
Perfect time to say that quantum computing will be a thing in the future probably. But even that would likely have to be simulated because the only way to get real quantum computer is to have the computers be kept at near 0 Kelvin which reaching 0 Kelvin is considered at this time to be impossible. So we can’t even perfectly do that until we do the impossible.
And if we’re simulating quantum bits by rapidly gating between 0 and 1, we still run into the issue of computers being fundamentally deterministic (i.e. unable to achieve True Random).
I’m not even sure we’ll be able to conceptualize quantum computers as “computers”. Their use would obliterate our entire digital infrastructure and a user’s understanding of how to interface with one. We might be able to do simulations with it, but we’ve found that quantum computers are actually pretty bad at doing things that our binary computers do pretty well. Like harnessing randomness from mother nature, we’d likely end up with a hybrid system where deterministic results are created by truly random quantum computers to be fed into a deterministic interface.
You are reading this post which is eliciting thoughts and feelings
Buried the lead on this one. This is what I really wanted to talk about. You are having thoughts about this post. Feelings.
Computers don’t do that. They won’t do that.
Fun fact about when you let AI talk to another AI: They completely transcend human understanding. Just like you come up with shorthand references like “yeet” that confuse boomers. AI will ultimately begin to develop language like that Dueling Carls video.
youtube
(Please god turn down your video before watching)
It’s almost hilarious how well this video demonstrates exactly what computers do. They start at the level of human understanding and then faster than you can blink, they ascend beyond what we could ever hope to conceptualize. The things about Facebook’s chatbots aren’t true of course, but they held a seed of truth.
AI will exist on another level.
This is because computers (like humans) are greedy. They use the fewest possible resources to reach the same goal. If you programmed a computer to simulate the universe, then it would try to take shortcuts where it could.
The fact that some people can think visually (seeing “pictures” in their mind) and others can’t really demonstrates that humans aren’t simulated. Or even further, did you know that humans really do have a 6th sense? It’s your ability to know where your body is when you can’t see it. Called propioception.
We know it exists because people can be born without it. When they close their eyes they physically can no longer use their limbs. It’s genetic.
Why would a computer account for these things? It’s made it harder to simulate a gene for propioception. Well, maybe the humans who programmed it, told it to account for that.
Then why are you having thoughts about this post? Why read it at all? It’s going to get what... 5 notes? Why account for you at all. It can have you do things without that “inner voice” that’s reading these words. It doesn’t have to give you intention behind your actions. So then humans made it give you intention.
Humans telling a computer to create humanity. And having to account for every single little thing. Telling it not to ignore the nuances of all human existence.
Why would we do that unless we wanted to simulate our entire human history?
How would we simulate all of our history if we didn’t know everything that everyone ever thought or felt?
If you are a simulation, then you are memory of someone who is real.
Finally, I talk about the proof we have reality isn’t a simulation
If you skipped to here, you’re going to be really disappointed. The math is complicated. You can read it here.
Here’s a summary of their findings.
In summary, we suggested that nontrivial gravitational/geometrical responses can be identified with obstructions to sign-free local QMC simulations. First, we pointed out that geometrical perturbations are unique in this context because they can always be added to a classical partition function without introducing complex phases or signs. Then, we established that having a global gravitational anomaly on an edge of a gapped system, as is the case for most fractional quantum Hall phases, implies a sign problem. The same argument extends to frustrated quantum magnets that support a chiral spin liquid phase, although here, some additional microscopic assumptions are currently required. Last, we pointed out that sign problems in critical 2D oriented loop models are also associated with a coupling of charge to curvature. Curiously, tensor network–based numerical approaches, for which the sign problem is irrelevant by construction, also struggle with simulating FQHE states (in the thermodynamic limit). This raises an intriguing connection between gravity and computational complexity via sign problems.
The point is that storing a single matrix of 20 spins of a quantum particle requires a terabyte of data. We’d run out of universe before we made even a small simulation.

Sunshine After Rain-- Connor (RK800) x Reader (Part 2)
Summary; After the death of your little brother, Cole, your dad hated androids. He blamed them for Cole's death. Hank couldn't stand to be around them. How the hell are you supposed to tell him that your soulmate is an android?
Warnings; swearing, terrible writing
Word Count; 3.2k
Notes;
Part One
Your mind felt heavy. How could your soulmate possibly be an android? There was no way you could tell Hank, not at the moment, at least. You glanced over at him. He was sitting at his desk, pouting over whatever Fowler just told him. You knocked on the captain's office door. Fowler looked up from his paperwork and motioned for you to enter. "I gotta get some air. I'll be back at some point this afternoon." You started to leave, but he called you back in.
"Actually, I'm gonna need you to stick around. An AX400 attacked its owner and kidnapped the guy's daughter. It was spotted down in the Raven Dale district." He reached into a bin and pulled out a sealed bag containing a pink sweater. "I want you to go down there with Hank and Connor to help them track down the kid. Her dad brought this by this morning." You carefully took the bag and examined it. "You'll be able to get some air in the Raven Dale district, right?" You sighed, nodding.
As you walked out of Fowler's office, you saw Hank shove Connor against a wall. Hank yelled at Connor to stop pissing him off. Another officer politely got Hank's attention back to the case at hand. "Hey, dad, Fowler wants me to tag along to see if I can help track the kid down." You called out, catching up to his retreating form.
"Good, I'll have someone to help me keep that plastic bastard in check." You rolled your eyes.
"I'm sure he's not that bad." Hank shot you a disgusted look.
"You've obviously hardly been around the thing. It's fucking annoying."
To save time, the three of you rode together in Hank's car. No one said a word. Awkward silence reigned until Hank started blasting heavy metal. Every once in a while, you would accidentally make eye contact with Connor in the rearview mirror, but you would both quickly look away. You tried to keep you attention on your dog and the case, but your mind kept roaming to the incident with Connor. Sure, he was pretty handsome, but how would a relationship with an android even work? You shook your head in an attempt to clear all the thoughts that were cluttering your mind.
As soon as the car stopped, you clamored out. Hank raised a brow at you but didn't say anything. He walked over to another officer, and the two started questioning the nearby witness. You attached the leash to your dog's collar and led it out of the car. A hand wrapped around your arm, and color exploded before your eyes. You gasped, turning to face Connor. "I do not understand what is happening every time we make contact. My programing is unable to process the circumstances. I feel it is best to remind you, (y/n), that I am an android. I am not a living being capable of having a soulmate." You pulled away from his grip.
"I never said you were," you retorted. Connor nodded.
"I am glad we can agree on that." You rolled your eyes and snatched the evidence bag from the car. Hank walked over to the two of you. He and Connor started talking about deviants having emotions. You opened the bag and carefully pulled out a corner of the soft fabric, holding it out to your dog's direction. It sniffed the sweater before turning its nose to the air.
"It's been raining a lot. Hopefully we can still track it down." Hank crossed his arms, watching the dog sniff around. The dog barked, leading you across the street. You pushed open a gate, allowing your dog to investigate a broken down car. It then made its way to a hole in a chainlink fence separating the lot from an abandoned house. The dog barked again, pawing at the fence. "We got a lead!" You called out. You got down on your knees and crawled through the hole. Moments later, Connor was following suit.
Hank and the other officers used bolt cutters to remove the lock on the front gate. Your dog tugged on its leash, trying to go towards the house. You looked at Connor and nodded. He went in front of you and knocked on the door. "Anybody home?" He shouted. The two of your waited a moment. You could hear shuffling inside. Connor swung the door open and marched inside. You stood in the doorway. Your eyes scanned the area, and your hand hovered over the pistol in your belt. Connor approached the damaged android that was sitting at a table in the middle of the room. The other android, Ralph, swore that he had not seen anyone. Your dog sniffed the floor then snorted. You loosened the leash, allowing the dog to follow the scent trail. You slowly crept closer to the staircase while Connor looked around the main threshold.
Without warning, Ralph leapt from the table and grabbed you. His arms tightened around you. You hardly breathe, let alone move from his grasp. He yelled at the AX400 to run. Your dog snarled and barked wildly. "Down!" You shouted at the animal. The last thing you needed was for it to attack one of the androids or the little girl. The dog laid on the ground as commanded but continued to snarl at Ralph. Connor pulled Ralph away from him, shoving Ralph to the ground. Hank jogged into the house.
"What the hell is going on?"
"It's here. Call it in!" Connor shouted before dashing out the door. You picked up the leash and went to follow him, but Hank blocked your path.
"Are you okay? You've been acting weird all morning."
"Dad, I'm fine. Shouldn't we focus on the task at hand?" You huffed, moving around him. You ran out of the house. Another officer told you what direction they went. "Then why the hell are you just standing here?" you muttered, dashing down the sidewalk. You dodged civilians as you thundered down the street with your dog at your side. You saw an officer dash down an alleyway and followed. He aimed his gun at the deviant, but Connor stopped him from shooting. You all watched as the deviant and the little girl slid down to the highway. Hank came up from behind, clearly out of breath.
"Oh, fuck. That's insane."
"There's no way they'll make it across alive." Connor started to scale the fence, but Hank pulled him back down. They started arguing about whether he should go after them or not. Connor decided to ignore Hank and continue to climb the fence. You reached up and grabbed his arm. He looked down into your eyes. "Come on, Connor. We don't need you getting destroyed again. It'll just slow down the investigation,” you tried to reason. He looked out onto the highway, and you followed his gaze. You watched the different colored vehicles zip down the road. You glanced back up at him. "Connor, please, just get down from there. We found them once, I'm sure we'll be able to find them again." Connor blinked slowly.
SOFTWARE INSTABILITY
He slowly climbed back down, and you removed your hand from his arm, sighing as the color drained from your vision.
You and Hank started walking back to the car. "How the hell did you do that?" he inquired with raised brows. You shot him a confused look. Hank scoffed. "How did you get it to listen to you? The damn thing seems to never hear a word I say." You shrugged.
"I don't know. Probably because of my charming personality, which is something you seem to lack." You playfully elbowed his side. Hank gave an exasperated laugh.
"Oh yeah, very funny." He stopped, putting a hand over his stomach. "I'm starving. We should grab a bite before heading back to the station." You smiled, already knowing where he was thinking about going.
"Hell yeah!" You climbed in the backseat, letting Connor sit shotgun. Hank turned up the music as soon as the engine sputtered to life. You gasped and gently shook Hank's shoulder. "Dad, play Killer Queen!" Hank rolled his eyes at your childish antics but complied, reaching up to adjust the stereo. You smiled and sang along to the music that was blasting from the old car's speakers. You poked Hank's shoulder until he finally started to sing too. "Connor, join in! You're the only one not singing." He stared at you with furrowed brows. "Quit being a party pooper and sing!" He turned his gaze to Hank, who just shrugged.
"Might as well give in Connor, they'll just keep buggin' ya until you do." Connor sighed. He mouthed along to the words. You lightly thumped his temple.
"That's not singing," you teased. Connor rolled his eyes and finally joined in. The three of you sang without a care in the world. It took him a while to warm up, but Connor eventually started singing as loud as you. "She's a killer queen! Gunpowder, gelatin dynamite with a laser beam-- guaranteed to blow your mind!"
"I swear, sometimes you act like you're still a child," Hank said as he parked the car. When he climbed out, you leaned forward to look at Connor. He was smiling.
"See, wasn't that fun?" He slightly tilted his head with a hum.
"Yes, I suppose it was." You smiled back at him before climbing out of the car. Connor stared at his lap. His brows knitted together. He wasn't supposed to develop emotions. He wasn't supposed to have a soulmate. He's an android, not a living being. He wouldn't let himself become a deviant.
You caught up with Hank at the counter of the little food truck. Although it wasn't the healthiest of choices, Chicken Feed made one damn good burger. You weren't too hungry, so you just ordered some tater tots and a soda. The owner, Gary, was a good friend of Hank's. He usually didn't charge either of you for your food, which you were very grateful for. As the two of you waited for your orders, Connor came to stand beside Hank. "Look, you don't have to follow me around look a poodle," he huffed. Connor tried to apologize to Hank, which made him laugh. You thanked Gary when he handed over your food. You followed Hank over to one of the tall tables nearby, and Connor followed behind you. The android made a snarky comment about how you both shouldn't eat your meals because it was unhealthy. Hank shrugged and continued to eat his burger, while you threw a tater tot at Connor.
"Unlike you, we only live once. So I will continue to eat whatever the hell I want." Hank snorted, and Connor looked slightly offended by the fact that you threw a tater tot at him. There were a few brief moments of silence before Connor spoke again.
"Is there anything you'd like to know about me?" Hank wrinkled his nose.
"Hell no.. Well, yeah, why did they make you look so goofy and give you that weird voice?" You laughed aloud but quickly covered your mouth to stifle your giggles. Hank looked slightly proud at his joke while Connor just raised a brow. He then explained that he was specifically designed to work harmoniously with humans. Hank nodded, as if he understood. "Well, they fucked up." You snorted.
"Leave him alone, dad. You're not the best looking either." Hank scoffed and rolled his eyes. A wide smile crossed your face.
"Don't you fucking dare say it."
"You're giving him grief about having a weird voice when you're the one that sounds like Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob!" you said in between laughs. Hank nudged you with his elbow, and you retaliated by throwing a tater tot at him. Connor cleared his throat and suggested that they reconvene by discussing the deviant cases. You sipped on your soda as they talked. You were only half paying attention, glancing at the two in between bites.
"Adapting to human unpredictability is one of my key features," he said with a wink. You started choking on your drink. Hank looked at you quizzically. You grimaced and cleared your throat. You could feel the heat rising to your cheeks.
"Sorry, it went down the wrong way." You coughed before popping the last tater tot into your mouth.
Connor started to blink rapidly. His LED indicator flashed. He alerted the two that he had just received information concerning a deviant case not far from their current location. Connor suggested that they go investigate once you two finished your meals. With that, he turned on his heel and headed back to the car. Hank turned to face you. "So, what was all that about?" You feigned confusion, and he just raised a brow at you, waiting for you to answer.
"Nothing, dad. Like I said earlier, I'm fine." Hank hummed and sipped on his drink, clearly not believing you. You rolled your eyes and threw your trash in a nearby trashcan. "Well, since you've got another case, I guess I'll be sticking around a little while longer."
You followed Hank out of the elevator. Casting a glance over your shoulder, you saw Connor still standing in the elevator with his eyes closed. "What is he doing?" You looked over at Hank. He threw his hands up.
"I don't understand half the things he does. Hey, Connor!" The android opened his eyes to see the two of you staring at him. "Did you run out of batteries or what?" He apologized, stating that he was making a report to CyberLife. You raised your brows in awe.
"You can do that just by closing your eyes?" Connor nodded. "That's so cool! I wish I could do that. It would make paperwork hella easier." Hank snorted.
"You got that right." He started walking down the hall, and you motioned for Connor to follow. Hank grumbled about having to investigate a strange noise. Connor walked around the hall, analyzing everything. You squinted at a large pile of feathers near the apartment door.
"That's a lot of feathers. I wonder if the deviant has a pet bird or two."
Connor knocked on the door but received no answer. He looked to you and Hank, and you just shrugged in response. He knocked louder. Still no answer. He knocked one last time, announcing that they were with the Detroit Police Department. A loud crash sounded from the other side. Within seconds, Hank had his gun out and was standing in front of you. "You two, stay behind me." You pulled out your own weapon. Connor swept you behind himself.
"Connor, I can take care of myself ya know," you muttered.
"I can be replaced, and as you pointed out earlier, you only live once. Having someone injured could be detrimental to the investigation."
"Fine," you huffed. Hank kicked the door in. He led the way inside the apartment, making sure that no one was hiding around a corner before entering a room.
The three of you separated into different rooms. You walked into the living room. You frowned as pigeons flew all around the room upon your entrance. You made sure to watch your step, not wanting to get shit all over your shoes. A large drawing on one of the walls caught your eye. You made your way to it and traced its details with your finger. Connor came to stand beside you. He seemed more interested in an urban farm poster than the drawings. He peeled back the poster, discovering a hole in the wall that was hiding a journal. Connor pulled it out and flipped through the pages. You leaned over to look at it and furrowed your brows. "Do you have a program that can decode it?" Connor tucked the journal in a pocket inside his jacket.
"No, it's indecipherable." You hummed, turning to face the closet next to you. You swung open the doors and screeched. Hank and Connor swirled around to face you. You swung your arms wildly as a flock of pigeons flew out of the closet.
"Fucking rats with wings!" you hissed. Hank's laughter filled the air as you scowled at him. Even Connor seemed amused. "You would've screamed too if they were coming for you!" You turned to Connor. "If you don't wipe that smug smile off your face, I'm gonna shove a pigeon in your face." He tilted his head.
"How can I wipe away a facial expression?"
"You have so much to learn about slang," you sighed. The three of you continued to search around the small apartment. Hank would randomly make a smartass comment about the pigeons just to annoy you, and you would retaliate by flipping him off.
Without warning, someone fell from the ceiling and knocked Connor over. When the deviant ran out of the apartment, Hank shouted something about chasing it. Connor was the first to dash out of the door, and you attempted to keep up until they stared doing parkour type shit. You and Hank gaped at the two androids as they started jumping on to moving trains. The two of you somehow managed to find another way around and made it to the greenhouses. The deviant ran into Hank, and he fell over the ledge. Everything seemed to go in slow motion. Your heart skipped a beat as you lunged forward in attempt to help pull him back to safety. Connor was stuck between chasing after the deviant or helping you. "Connor, get your ass over here and help me!" You shouted, cutting through his analysis.
SOFTWARE INSTABILITY.
He clinched his jaw as he stepped forward. Connor reached over and helped you pull Hank back onto the roof. You sighed in relief. Hank got to his feet and ranted about how they would have caught it if it wasn't for him.
"Dad, don't say that. It'll be okay. We know what it looks like, and I'm sure we'll be able to track it down again. Right, Connor?" The android nodded.
"It wasn't your fault, Lieutenant. I should've been faster."
"Both of you need to quit being so hard on yourselves. We did good today." Hank nodded and started walking back through the greenhouses.
You gently grabbed Connor's arm to stop him. When he turned to face you, you wrapped your arms around him in an embrace. He stiffened, unsure of what to do. Connor's LED flashed yellow until it settled on blue as he returned the embrace. "I know your main goal is to complete your mission with capturing deviants, but I just.." You paused, sighing. "I just wanted to thank you for what you did back there." You pulled away from the embrace, but kept a hand on his arm so you could see the color in his eyes. "My dad's the only family I have left. I would go batshit crazy if something bad happened to him and there was something that could've been done to prevent it." Connor's eyes softened as he looked over your facial features. He went to move his hand but hesitated. He took a breath before reaching up to touch a strand of your (h/l), (h/c) hair.
"Of course, (y/n)."
Hank turned around and saw the two of you. At first he scowled, but then he saw how gentle Connor was with you. He hummed, deep in thought. Hank turned on his heel and continued walking.

A note to Tucows Downloads visitors:
All good things…
We have made the difficult decision to retire the Tucows Downloads site. We’re pleased to say that much of the software and other assets that made up the Tucows Downloads library have been transferred to our friends at the Internet Archive for posterity.
The shareware downloads bulletin board system (BBS) that would become Tucows Downloads was founded back in 1993 on a library computer in Flint, MI. What started as a place for people in the know to download software became the place to download software on the burgeoning Internet. Far more quickly than anyone could have imagined.
A lot has changed since those early years. Tucows has grown and evolved as a business. It’s been a long time since Tucows has been TUCOWS, which stood for The Ultimate Collection of Winsock Software.
Today, Tucows is the second-largest domain name registrar in the world behind Go Daddy and the largest wholesaler of domain names in the world with customers like Shopify and other global website builder platforms. Hover offers domain names and email at retail to help people brand their life online. OpenSRS (and along the way our acquisitions of Enom, Ascio and EPAG) are the SaaS platforms upon which tens of thousands of customers have built their own domain registration businesses, registering tens of millions of domains on behalf of their customers. Ting Internet is building fiber-optic networks all over the U.S. At the same time, we’re building the Mobile Services Enabler SaaS platform that is powering DISH’s entry into the US mobile market.
Point is, we’re keeping busy.
Red Ace Squadron is a challenging shooter that features colorful graphics, diverse sound effects and march music. Graphics is quite well done; jets, AA guns, tanks and structures look decent though they lack details in order to be called realistic.
Download Free Red Ace Squadron
For the past several years, history, well sentimentality, has been the only reason to keep Tucows Downloads around. We talked about shutting the site down before. Most seriously in 2016 when instead, we decided to go ad-free, keeping the site up as a public service.
Today is different. Tucows Downloads is old. Old sites are a maintenance challenge and therefore a risk. Maintaining the Tucows Downloads site pulls people away from the work that moves our businesses forward.
Tucows Downloads has had an incredible run. Retiring it is the right move but that doesn’t alter the fact that it will always hold a special place in hearts and our story. We’re thankful to the thousands of software developers who used Tucows Downloads to get their software in front of millions of people, driving billions of downloads over more than 25 years.
Thank you. Sincerely, Elliot Noss CEO, Tucows

Thoughts of the Past - Reimagined
Alright fair warning, this is a lot more angsty (?) than the other chapters, and I am not sorry about it.
CW: Angst...like I’m not kidding this hurt to write
Previous Chapter // Next Chapter
When Lorcan walked into the gallery with Aelin and Rowan he was greeted by a friendly staff member who directed him how the show should be viewed. She handed all three of them a pamphlet that contained the artwork and prices for the pieces that were for sale, mentioning that the proceeds tonight benefited public schools in the area keep their art programs. Aelin thanked the staff member and whispered something to Rowan who nodded before she slipped away.
“Aelin is going to look for Elide, do you want to come with us or…?”
“No,” Lorcan responded. “I’m gonna look at the pieces that Elide did. I should,” he cleared his throat, “I should appreciate them, I mean her,” he sighed, “I mean the art.”
Rowan chuckled slightly as his friends' nervousness, nodded and followed after Aelin. Lorcan nodded at the staff member and followed a couple of people who were walking into the first part of Elide’s show and stopped.
All the air that he had left his body.
The first portrait he saw was of him. It was of him sitting on a curb, elbows braced on knees, a lit cigarette in one hand and a bottle of Jack in the other. His hair was windblown around his face and he was smiling.
He got closer to the painting and looked at the label, First Smile, Oil, and Acrylic on Canvas, 18 x 24, Elide Lochan.
Lorcan looked at the painting closely, there were some parts of the painting that were blurred or out of focus - his eyes, for instance, were squinted from the smile on his face but were painted in a way that looked like they were painted over. The main focus was his smile though, everything from the cigarette that was placed in his hand near his mouth, to certain windblown strands of his hair. But the title. First smile?
This portrait reminded him or so many days spent with Elide or even Rowan that he couldn’t pinpoint where or when this portrait was supposed to take place. He decided to move forward and was confused by a banner reading ‘Once upon a time’. Looking at the pamphlet that the staff member had given him he found that the exhibit was split into five parts that told an overall story.
-------------
“Ellie, wait please.” Aelin followed Elide into the bathroom that was near the bar. “You just said that you wished he was here.”
Elide was pacing in front of the sinks, “I know what I said,” she moved to take her hair out of a ponytail and into a bun before remembering that her hair was styled so she did the next best thing - she washed her hands….furiously.
“I said it in a way that any person wishes to stumble across their ex to show off that they are doing really well without them.”
“Well that’s definitely the case here.” Aelin sighed handing her a couple of paper towels to dry off her hands.
“I don’t think,” Elide sighed, balling up the paper towels and throwing them away, “I don’t know if I want to talk to him.”
Aelin walked over to the settee couch that was placed in the bathroom for the exact reason of having secret, deep, or meaningful conversations. “Listen,” she said patting the spot next to her, “I am on your side no matter what, I need you to understand that. Okay?” Elide sighed and sat next to Aelin. “I’m not going to like what comes out of your mouth, am I?” She asked crossing her arms. Aelin huffed a laugh, “Probably not, but you need to hear it anyway.” Elide took a deep breath and motioned for Aelin to continue.
“Lorcan and I were never destined to be friends.” Elide’s head shot up to Aelin’s face. “I have never met anyone that was objectively more of a pain in the ass than I could be on any given day. He is moody as hell, standoffish, and he’s about as nice as a carnivorous plant.” Elide opened her mouth to say something but Aelin held up a finger telling her to wait.
“Still, I could see the way he looked at you and knew that if anyone could help smooth the edges of his soul it would be you.”
Elide lifted her face and began to try to blink back tears. Still looking at the ceiling she responded. “It is not my job to fix him.” The words came out sharper than she had intended especially because she knew that Aelin’s words were coming from a good place. Aelin’s hand took hers. “I know that. That wasn’t what I was trying to say. I only meant that...” Aelin sighed. “There is something that I’m not supposed to tell you. In fact, I don’t think I’m even supposed to know but Rowan told me and even if I can stand Lorcan now, doesn’t mean I have that much loyalty to him.” Elide brought her index finger to gently dab under her eye, careful not to ruin her makeup. Aelin stood up and grabbed the box of tissues next to the sink before sitting down again.
“What is it?” Elide asked.
And then Aelin explained that for the past month and a half since Elide had left, Lorcan had been going to AA meetings with Rowan and with the couple’s help was not only going to therapy but also had quit his in cybersecurity and gotten a new one working in software engineering, finally accepting Rowan’s offer to put his degree to work. That not only was he and Rowan finally working together after all this time but that they were developing a program that would help the families in Terrasen easily find resources to help them within their communities anonymously so that they didn’t have to worry about seeming weak or being judged.
“I don’t...understand.” Elide said slowly once Aelin was done talking. “I mean it’s not like I didn’t know that Lorcan was capable of doing amazing things but I just don’t understand why now.” Elide grabbed another tissue and blew her nose.
“I think he’s just trying to show you that he’s changed...or I guess changing would be a better way to describe it.”
“He hasn’t called me once A. The only time I’ve talked to him was when I asked to meet him so he could sign the disclosure release.”
“I don’t have all the answers El. Talk to him, don’t talk to him. You broke up with him for a reason, and if you decide to ignore him for the rest of the night that’s is 100% complete valid, Ro and I will keep him away from you. However, if there is just some tiny part of you that doubts or second guesses whether or not you made the right decision in leaving, take this chance to make sure.” Aelin handed Elide the small clutch she came in with. “Inside are wet wipes, mascara, eyeliner and lip gloss. Fix yourself up, I’m going to look at your art.” Aelin stood up and checked herself in the mirror.
“This is your night babe, you’re a badass with a great ass.” Aelin winked at Elide who let out a small laugh before heading out of the bathroom.
-------------
Lorcan may not have known much about art but he knew the story that was being told. It was his story, seen through Elide’s eyes and admired by the random strangers who were here. He heard some people discussing how this was not only an impressive collection of work but also a change of pace from her usual pieces, combining a variety of mixed media with paintings. Lorcan kept his ears open for remarks made about the pieces if only so he could understand and mimic key phrases that the people around him used, but it was hard when he knew the story behind Elide’s art and not just a theory of what it was about.
Five sections; The Beginning, The Sex, The Love, The Pain, The Future.
Walking through The Beginning was like a blast from the past. Every bit was a memory or story that he had experienced with Elide. Four 16x40 inch black canvases had bubbles blowing through each, and while you couldn’t tell who was blowing the bubbles, Lorcan knew that it was Elide’s hand. Hidden within the bubbles were little clues about their relationship, so minuscule that no one but him knew. They would just see a Farris Wheel, a teddy bear, a popcorn container, and a rocking chair.
“There seems to be a reoccurring theme of security in each of these pieces, don’t’ you think?” Lorcan overheard a couple talking.
“I was thinking the same thing, like this piece over here with the lightbulbs, and how each time someone gets close to it they turn on. Like that’s such great imagery to being safe. Parents turning on a night light during bedtime, coming home from a long day and the lights are on because your significant partner is already inside. Or even the painting that used gum wrappers, is reminiscent of childhood.” The couple began to walk down to look at other pieces and Lorcan couldn’t help but follow them with their eyes. Was that how Elide saw him? As something safe to come home to at the end of the day? There were times at the beginning of their relationship when she said she would rather be with him than go home. When they first met he knew that she had just moved out of her Uncle’s house. Aelin always got a dark look in her eyes whenever Vernon was mentioned but Elide had never said anything….and like an idiot he had never asked.
He continued walking.
The next part of the exhibit - The Sex, was a much different layout. The lights were dim to highlight the use of neon lights and blacklight paints. The pieces in this part of the collection were bigger and took up more space but there was a rhythm here that could be felt. The paintings are more obscure and vague here, less of the innocence that was seen in the beginning, but if this was still following his and Elide’s relationship - as he was now finally figuring it was, the sex had never been the problem in their relationship. They could always find each other in bed...or the couch...or the kitchen island...or...well you get the point. Words and feelings that he could never say allowed were whispered onto her skin in breathy moans or grunts. The way he would breathe out praises to the Gods when she was on her knees before him. Lorcan shook out the thoughts and continued past this collection, trying to block out the fact that Elide had basically put their sex life on display even if he was the only one who knew.
The Love was a much brighter place, golds and yellows blended with pinks and lilac colors. There were symbols of holiness and domesticity in portraits. But as Lorcan moved through the collection he saw blackness creeping in. At first, it was small, used only for details or outlining, but as he walked, it started to grow in shadows and on the edges, starting to look like mistakes or spilled ink. Lorcan could feel his heart beginning to race and then he was moving past a heavy, thick black curtain into a pitch-black room. He could vaguely make out the other people in the room with him who were standing - and listening.
Overhead, playing on unseen speakers, was a couple fighting. Not just any couple - him and Elide.
“I’ve only had like one drink.” He heard himself slur. Elide huffed out a laugh. “One? Try again, there are four bottles lying next to you.”
“They were all basically empty, I don’t even know why you’re upset.”
“You were supposed to meet me at the restaurant!” Elide said. Her voice sounded tight, she wasn’t yelling at him - that was something that Lorcan was remembering, she never really yelled at him.
“I didn’t want to go! They all would have judged me anyway, I had a long day, and if I wanted a drink then I was going to have one in the comfort of my own home.”
“Who would have judged you? No one would have judged you, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Then the audio changed. Eldie was crying on the phone. “I just don’t know what to do, I keep trying to talk to him but it’s like he doesn’t even see me anymore. I come home and he doesn’t even respond when I say hello.” She sniffed. “Every time I try to talk to him we always get into a fight, I’m so...I’m so tired of fighting with him. I’m just so….so tired. I don’t want to do this anymore.”
“I just don’t get it,” Aelin’s voice filtered through, “...says he’s the most loyal person that he knows.” The audio cut off Rowan’s name, but Lorcan knew. “Listen, why don’t you come and stay with us a couple of days?”
It got quiet in the room and Lorcan heard some people leaving. After a while, the audio started up again. The argument was different this time, but it ended with Lorcan dismissing Elide and her accusations and her walking away or crying. Some of the audio was done journal entry style, where she explained her thoughts and fears, of how every time they got into a fight she felt like she wasn’t what Lorcan wanted or how she felt he didn’t love her anymore. Some of the audio was them making up, him apologizing, and her saying that it was okay. That she understood. That she loved him, of course, she loved him. Him promising that it was going to be better - that he was going to be better. And then another fight would happen.
She never used his name though. He knew it was on purpose, that despite having him sign a disclosure, he knew that he wanted everyone to feel the experience with her, and by adding names it took the audience out of that experience, it was why even Rowan’s name was censored out. He stood in that room for a while, listening to the fights that had been recorded over and over, hearing them sober and knowing just how deeply he fucked up. He knew now why Elide hadn’t accepted his apology at the coffee shop, understood that he had already apologized and that it hadn’t changed anything.
He finally walked out of The Pain section, although a part of him had just wanted to stay in there and torment himself.
At first, Lorcan thought that he had finished the exhibit, before remembering that there was one final part, The Future. There were blank canvases on the wall, and Lorcan could feel Elide’s emotion with each one he passed. The uncertainty, the fear of the unknown, the lack of assurance and confidence. Everything that he had ever felt throughout their relationship, he was beginning to understand that she felt too.
Stupid, idiot, asshole.
He was so blinded by his own insecurities that he didn’t even think about Elide’s. She had always been there for him, but he had never been there for her. Not in the way that it mattered. There was one final piece on the wall, he could hear the chatter of polite conversation around the corner, where he knew he would find food and drinks for the people who came tonight. It was a wall covered in pictures and painted over. Some like Aelin’s and Manon’s were untouched by paint. Others like Fenrys and Rowan had almost little to none and some were completely painted over in black, in the center was a plain canvas like the ones leading up to this, but the one that Lorcan couldn’t take his eyes off of was the one of his face.
It wasn’t completely painted over, but it had more paint on it than others. The picture was blurry and convoluted, the paint on outlining his face. As if Elide had wanted to keep the picture but wanted to symbolize that she was unsure of whether or not to let him go completely.
And that gave him hope. He couldn’t stop staring at the picture. He didn’t know how long he had been standing there but he saw Rowan appear in his peripheral.
“What are you thinking?” His friend asked.
Lorcan released a long breath. “That I never deserved her, and that I’m an ass for putting her through everything.” Lorcan started to fidget with the ribbon hair tie on his wrist. “I messed up so bad Rowan. I will never be able to make this up to her. It would be better if I just left her alone.” Rowan placed a hand on Lorcan’s shoulder.
“The main goal tonight wasn’t to have her get back with you. In fact, the main goal tonight wasn’t for you to even talk to her, not really. It was to step up and offer the silent support that she needed from you. You two could never talk again, but you coming to her show tonight is going to mean a lot to her regardless of how much you fucked up.”
“What if I only made her hate me more?” Lorcan asked.
“Then she’s entitled to her feelings. You cannot tell her what to feel, but just make sure that the next time she talks, you listen.” Lorcan nodded, still looking at the final artwork.
“I’m gonna get a soda, do you want one?” Lorcan shook his head, and continued to stare. A couple of moments later he felt a presence coming up to him.
“Actually, I do want that drink.” Lorcan said.
“Aelin said you weren’t drinking anymore.” The voice responded. Lorcan stiffened and turned to look at Elide who was staring at him with hesitancy in her eyes.
