Daminette December: 30-Dressed to Impress

Everyone in Gotham Academy knew that Marinette was beautiful. She wasn't one of the wealthier students, but she seemed to attract everyone with her smile.

Damian glanced down the hall, only to see Marinette Dupain-Cheng getting asked out again. He didn't see what was so special about her. He turned back down the hallway he had just came from, deciding to take the longer route to class.

'Why the hell is she getting asked out again? She should just pick one and end everyone's suffering.'

"You should have said yes." he heard someone tell her, "You're going to the Wayne Gala. You'll need a date."

'So she will be there as well. I wish Father would keep annoyances like her out of the event. Likely she will try to speak to me and react badly when I refuse.'

Damian stared as he recognized Marinette at the gala. She had a ombre dress that was dark in the middle and spread out to pink, with her hair in an intricate design. The difference startled him. The Marinette he saw at school was more relaxed. Damian had a hard time refocusing.

'I cannot grasp the change. She is not more attractive this way, but she is alluring at the same time. Her appearance has brought forth many of her features: her eyes appear bluer and she appears to hide her muscles.'

It took him a few moments to recognize she was standing next to Jagged Stone. Even from his distance, he could hear the rock star raving about Marinette being his personal designer and how talented she was.

"BUG!" a voice shouted.

Damian watched as a blonde boy ran up and hugged Marinette. She looked tiny in his arms. Damian just glared, waiting for her to shove him away.

"Don't yell that here!" she shouted at him, "This isn't the place for that! You could have scared someone and caused a disaster!"

From behind Jagged, a boy with ombre blue hair grabbed Marinette's hand and kissed it. It only instigated a fight with the blonde, where he took her other hand and kissed it. He watched as Marinette sighed, in what he could only perceive to be annoyance. Then began the whispers.

"Wow."

"Damn, so that's why I got rejected."

"Me too."

"So, which one do you think is her boyfriend?"

"The blonde seemed more excited to see her."

"But the other guy just swooped in and kissed her."

"Maybe they both are?"

If anything, the whispers dug the way into the young Wayne's brain.

'These idiots are the reasons for the rejections? They are why I have to hear people asking her out constantly?'

Damian growled as the trio began to laugh.

"Come." Bruce spoke, "I have some people I want you all to meet."

Damian followed, only to realize they were going over to Jagged Stone and his party.

"Jagged!" Bruce called out in his overly friendly tone.

"Brucie Boy!" Jagged shouted, hugging his old friend.

"You know Jagged Stone?" His brothers shouted.

"Know him?" Jagged laughed, "Bloke threw absolute ragers in college! His parties have toned down now but let me tell you-"

"Jagged, you said you have kids. Do you want your kids at those kinds of parties?" Bruce interrupted, hoping to get his point across.

Jagged rolled his eyes, "Alright. Luka is my boy. My daughter is with her wife, back in Paris." placing his left hand on his shoulder and then placed his right hand on the girls shoulder, "Marinette is my adopted niece and rockin' designer."

"Wait!" cried Tim, "You made his album cover?"

"And me clothes, Mate. What we're wearing right now is her exclusive clothing line." Jagged bragged.

"Your work is high quality for your age." Bruce declared, "Oh, right. Jagged you know my adopted boys: Dick, Jason, and Tim. This is my biological son, Damian." shoving him to the front.

Jagged cackled, "Looks just like you!"

Damian watched as Marinette blushed red and quickly looked down. Adrien caught the look and started laughing.

"You had no idea, did you?" he laughed.

"Oh, shut up!" she growled at him, "I didn't even know who you were and I follow fashion!"

"Ouch." Adrien smiled.

"You know my son?" Bruce asked, looking between them, praying nothing bad had happened already.

"Uh, I wouldn't really say I personally know. I've seen him at school." she replied.

"Yes, the Queen of Broken Hearts." Damian stated.

Marinette crossed her arms and glared at him, "Says the Ice Prince of Gotham."

The Wayne looked at each other, seeing it looked like the two were about to do battle.

"Broken Hearts, huh?" Luka teased, "Damn, even here, you're pulling people."

Marinette rolled her eyes and faced the blonde.

'So, she doesn't like the attention.'

"We both tried our luck with her, but ultimately failed." Adrien smiled, "Don't let us fool you though. She can pull girls, too."

"I'm not looking for romance right now!" Mari whined.

"At least you have options lined out the door for when you do." Luka smirked.

"We'll volunteer again." Adrien smiled.

Mari smacked them both in their chests.

"You both are dating, each other." Marinette cried out, "Adrien, you're practically family."

The boys looked at each other and smiled at her, "We don't mind a third, if it's you." they declared.

"I hate you both." Mari pouted, "You're both perfect for each other."

Jagged laughed, "I love having another musician in the family. Luka, when are you making Adrien my son-in-law?"

The boys turned red, while Marinette giggled.

"Why don't you and Bruce's boy go dance?" Jagged suggested, shoving her forward towards the Waynes.

"You want me to step on his foot?" she questioned.

"Bug, you dance flawlessly." Adrien spoke, "I don't know why you say you can't. Even Felix agrees with me and he's had years of dance recitals."

"Is that so?" Damian asked, grabbing her wrist, "Let's find out."

Marinette glared at Adrien, as she was dragged away, "No crossaints for you!"

"So what did you mean?" Damian questioned, as they began to dance.

"My family are bakers." She spoke, glancing down at her feet quickly, "He always asks me to make him some when he's not with my parents."

Damian tilted her face to look at his, "Baker, fashion designer to rockstars, college student. Is there anything you can't do?"

"Love." she whispered.

"Same." he answered.

Marinette focused on his facial features, gaining his curiosity.

"What?" he questioned.

"You're attractive." Mari stated.

Damian faltered for half a second, not expecting her bluntness.

"That's it?" Damian asked, suddenly expecting more of a compliment.

Mari huffed, "It's not like you want my opinion or actually care what I think. Besides, You seem like the type of person to look at someone as a whole."

"Explain." Damian spoke, trying to see her reasoning.

"You don't care if someone looks good. You care about actions. You care about your safety and making sure you're not hurt in the end. You're not going to entertain somoene who wants to marry you for your money. You want someone real and as real as you." Marinette declared.

The young Wayne was so enthralled with her words, he hadn't realized how close she was to his face.

"I, personally, hate rumors and tend not to believe them." she stated, "I can find out for myself if someone is trustworthy or just another liar. It's the same with fashion; people are more two-faced then Harvey Dent and just try to take the easy way to the top, usually with a drink or a bed."

Marinette pulled away and walked off, back to her company.

Damian stood there, rooted to the spot. As he gained his thoughts and walked away, he could hear the whispers.

"Is she dating Damian Wayne?"

"Fuck! I'm never gonna get her now!"

"What about me, huh? What about my chance with Damian?"

"What chance did you think you had? Obviously, she looks better."

"I can't believe you'd say that!"

"I don't know. He is the Ice Prince."

"And she's the Queen of Broken Hearts; your point?"

"Maybe she's out of his league. Queen and a prince?"

Damian smirked, getting an idea.

'Perhaps, this time, being close to a classmate would not be a bad thing. If I stay near her, I would not have to hear people asking her out. It would not clutter the hallways and I would not be late to class. I would not have to hear her name mentioned constantly around the school.'

The young Wayne looked back to see the blonde on his knees, hugging her legs. Marinette looked exasperated, while Jagged and his son laughed at the scene.

'He looks desperate. I wonder if her baking rivals Alfred's to make him put on that display.'

"So, Little D, what do you think?" Dick asked, hoping to hear his decision on the girl.

"Adequate dancer. Adequate conversation." The young Wayne stated, " I may have just solved an ongoing issue. Excuse me."

"Huh?" Tim questioned.

"Did the brat just compliment her?" Jason asked.

"I believe your brother did compliment the young lady." Bruce replied.

"Marinette." Damian spoke, standing in front of her, "I believe it would be fortunate for the both of us if we declared a relationship."

Damian watched as her cheeks turned red, at an alarming rate. Her party seemed stunned by his declaration.

"But you...why?" Mari finally asked, "From our conversation-"

"We both hate people surrounding us and the attention we bring about." Damian interrupted.

"Us dating....would get people to stop." Marinette concluded.

"Mari." Adrien spoke up.

"You are asking me to....fake date you, so you don't get asked out, but by extension, neither will I." Mari declared.

Damian nodded, "Correct."

"Sure." Marinette smiled, "You got a deal."

"What?" Cried the boys with her.

"Oh, and expect a care package. My boyfriend can't dress like that. The design doesn't suit you. I'll make sure my clothes do." she declared.

Damian bowed and walked back to his family.

"What was that?" Asked Tim.

"Marinette Dupain-Cheng is now my girlfriend. " the youngest Wayne announced.

They were silent for a moment, but Jason broke the tension.

"Guess she impressed the brat." He stated

'Impressed? Perhaps.'

Damian looked back towards Marinette. He wouldn't have just chosen anyone to be in a relationship with, even if it was just for appearances.

I know people don’t like viola all that much, but what if I I made an viola (bayonetta 3) x reader story about them exploring the Avalon forest, so viola can understand her faerie side. And the reader is viola’s only friend. They often get dragged around by viola during her odd jobs.

I did consider making reader a distant relative of someone who was born from a lumen sage but never practiced it, also the lumen sage that could’ve given birth to this relative Isn’t balder. I think both the lumen and umbra were ok with their members having families but they couldn’t have relations with the other clan. But I do think it ultimately wouldn’t matter if the reader was like 1/8 lumen sage because well viola is what 1/4 lumen sage and they don’t give a fuck to try to preserve both the lumen and umbran clans. Which is fair because both were terrible, but only one took care of cereza even if it wasn’t the best. Ultimately there’s no real importance to making reader a lumen or someone with magic. It arguably adds more to the dynamic if the reader isn’t magically powerful.

Also I’m going to have the story have an alive Jeanne, Luka, and cereza, because I’m thinking this takes place after what I assume what the plot of bayo 4 being, which is more based on explaining why cereza is alive and bringing her back from inferno. Yes I know bayo 4 doesn’t exist yet I’m just making a lot of assumptions here. Also I’m having the trio being a throuple, because fuck you. I like staying in canon and we could all debate as to whether or not cereza loves Jeanne platonically or not, so both Luka and Jeanne are in a romantic relationship with cereza.

I do plan on not having it being explicitly romantic or platonic. I don’t have attraction towards viola anyways, plus I’m aro so I don’t think I would be able to write it correctly. So use y’all’s imagination, also if I get a lot wrong about the canon of faeries or the inspirations that the series pulls from then I’m sorry. I’m lazy and sometimes I’m just going to take the basic bitch information.

While I’m writing this I might just make it focused on reader’s and viola’s odd jobs and then towards then end have them acknowledge the Avalon forest as a place of investigation.

I’m sorry if the story ends upkinda bad, in the long run, most of the time I’ll get really into a project and just want it to be done.

Idk if you already discussed this but how do you feel about Adrinette being canon when there wasn‘t a reveal yet? Because I think the show just took all the exciting aspects of the love square away by making one side canon and the others strictly platonic.

Sure, they‘re cute and whatnot, but I don‘t think they‘re exactly interesting without the identity shenanigans and stuff? Especially because (to me at least) Adrinette always felt like the weakest side. It‘s a school crush romcom type of love, which is great and all, but like…. You have superheroes in your show?? Hello??? Why not combine the two elements more effectively???The others are either badass superhero couple (I loved the Ladynoir dynamic in the movie for example) or one superhero hangs out with the civilian and they bond. That‘s literally all of fanon Marichat, and I personally think it works with Ladrien too. There‘s different aspects of those relationships that can be explored and create problems that they have to overcome (like the power imbalance with the civilian x hero ships, how do you handle that while dating?)

I wish the writers would use the square more effectively

I'm not against pre-reveal dating, but I agree that Adrienette is the worst side to chose from a story telling perspective because - as you so rightly pointed out - it's arguably the side with the least identity shenanigans and the side that has the least ties to the superhero stuff that's supposed to be the show's main focus. Adrienette is the side you chose if you're focusing on civilian drama which, to be fair, was season five's main focus even though Gabriel had stolen the miraculous and we were all expecting that complication to be the focus of the season five plot.

Instead the focus was "will Marinette ever have the courage to say a kind word to Adrien's face instead of just telling others how much she loves him even though she knows that he explicitly returns her feelings, making this plot kind painful on every level" which was... a choice.... Five seasons and we're still doing this shit? Really?

This may mean that the writer's plan in season six is to continue to focus on civilian drama or it could mean that they didn't think further than season five and we're about to get a lot of awkward writing. Who knows? I have no idea how they're going to handle civilian dating plus secret identities for long since the writers chose the only side of the square where running off to fight akumas isn't a given thing that the couple-in-question knows will happen. My best guess is that the writers will probably just avoid putting Adrienette in the type of situations Adrigami and Lukanette were put in, I guess?

No matter how they handle it, I don't expect major identity shenanigans because the show has never done much with identity shenanigans probably because quality identity shenanigans require you to be able to draw out plots over multiple episodes and then resolve those plots. This show cannot have that kind of plot progression given it's formulaic nature and the "there must always be a secret between Adrien and Marinette" rule, thus the identity shenanigans being so limited.

This means that the side best suited to the show's writing is probably Ladynoir. Still room for the minor identity shenanigans that the show limits itself to, baked-in-yet-low-stakes tension from having to keep the relationship a complete secret, and a much more logical result of the writing in the first four seasons. While Adrien is far from perfect and has issues to rival Marinette's, his crush always felt like the stronger one given that he actually spent time with Ladybug and had a true relationship with her.

Marinette, on the other hand, barely talked to Adrien because the show literally has a rule that she can never successfully confess her crush, so they needed to keep her and Adrien from becoming close to make those continued failed confessions somewhat plausible. Given all that, it's hard for me to buy that Adrien's crush flipped to this girl that he barely knows. Meanwhile Ladybug's crush flipping had a pretty strong setup given that Chat Noir has been her loyal support in her darkest hours.

But that's not what they went with! Instead of having the secret be the low-stakes identities secret, the secret between them is, "Your father was a super villain whose minions killed you on multiple occasions and whose death you were arguably involved with. While were on the topic of your messed up family, you're an artificial being whose creation killed you mother. Oh, and we're also hero partners, which feels like a minor thing compared to all of that, but we might as well mention that, too."

...choice were made folks. Choices were made. This is so not how you write a formula show! You never go this serious!

Since you mentioned the Civilian/hero pairings, let's talk about those both to end on a lighter note and because that's where my personal favorite lies as I am here for identity shenanigans. That's right, folks, I am once again here to sell you on my Ladrien supremacy agenda.

While I have nothing against Marichat, it is not a good fit for canon. It's simply too limiting because Marinette is not a celebrity. There's a reason that of Marinette's canon hangouts with Chat Noir (and almost all Marichat fics) start on her balcony. That's really the only place they can meet up without drawing attention, which should be a major concern for them.

I physically cringed when the show had them go to the movies and on an ice cream date because Chat Noir was being so irresponsible! He cannot be shown to have a close relationship with a civilian, which is the excuse he should have given at the end Elation since that the episode included Gabriel discovering their relationship. The excuse Chat Noir actually gave feels pretty dismissive of his canon relationship with Marinette. She has canonically spent more time talking to Chat Noir then she's spent talking to Adrien and the same actually goes for the amount of time Ladynoir spends talking about non-hero things, so this feels off:

Cat Noir: I’m sorry about what happened, Marinette. You’re right, you have the right to love anyone you want. Even a superhero. But it’s easy for a person to mistake idolization of a superhero for love. So, even if I like this person very much, I could be taking advantage of the situation, and I just can’t do that. It would be wrong.

Evil Illustrator, their heartfelt talk in Glaciator, the movie date in Glaciator 2, and a bunch of other little moments add up to somehow make Marichat the deepest side of the square, which is painfully bad writing given how little screen time this side gets, but it's still what canon gave us. Marinette is not just a fan who only knows him from a distance. They are friends and even occasional teammates. The only reason this pairing doesn't work in canon is because there's nowhere for the relationship to go until a partial or total reveal happens.

Prior to that, it's just these two hanging out on her balcony or maybe going on secret dates around the city. Cute, but not suited to a silly superhero romcom aimed at kids where every story needs to be told in about 20 minutes. It's best left to long form fan content that is allowed to be more about drama and romance than the actual show and also a little more spicy than the actual show because - let's be real here - those rooftop dates would not just be talking. I don't know how you'd write this pairing in a way that's both genuine and well suited to the intended audience. It's simply way more suited to a teen drama than a kid's show.

Ladrien, on the other hand, could work if canon wanted to go there. I don't think it would be a good fit for more than a season*, so Ladynoir is still the better pick for canon's format, but Ladrien could be a nice bit of pre-reveal padding to draw out the reveal and add some fun comedy if the show were allowed to have a reveal.

Because Ladybug and Adrien are both celebrities, you can have them interact in diverse settings without anyone thinking twice. This allows for a good amount of hijinks where Ladybug is trying to protect her boyfriend at public events without revealing their relationship while Adrien is trying to get her to let him run off and transform.

You can also do things like the public seeing them together, thinking they're a couple, and having them both deny it because they aren't, leading to Ladynoir comedy where Ladybug cries because she wishes they were and Chat Noir is like, "Wait, what? You what? ...My Lady, as your loyal partner who is here to support you in all things, I will get you your man even if it kills me!" The thinking-they're-a-couple thing could also be solved via Ladynoir by Ladynoir going public while Adrien remains "single". There's just a lot of potential for the show's style of absurdist humor here.

*Ladrien does eventually fall into the same issues as Marichat where it feels like the reveal needs to happen otherwise you're just repeating the same plots or going too spicy for a kids show via bedroom-based meetups, thus me saying that it's only good for about a season. There's also the problem that Akuma fights and supervillains are endless fodder for Ladynoir issues, but the only issue Ladrien could possibly address is Gabriel and Marichat's got nothing save for maybe Lila? So if you don't want to let a reveal happen, Ladynoir really is the best pick by far. Adrienette can work, but it's way less fun since they have to keep all these secrets while Ladynoir really only has one major secret or, at least, Ladynoir should only have one major secret (the identities). Canon has really dropped the ball on this one.

Now that I've written all this out, maybe the spicy issue is why canon went Adrienette? It's a lot easier to limit their alone time than it is to limit the alone time of any other side. I maintain that you could get away with it in pre-reveal Ladynoir by just ignoring the issue and giving them things to fight any time they try to have a date. You could also end episodes on them starting their date, leaving everything to the imagination but also keeping the setting relatively public (rooftops and the like) unlike the civilian/hero sides whose dates are going to be way more private. I fully understand why a show aimed at 5-to-12-year-olds wouldn't want to go there. That is far more suited to the teen drama Miraculous so desperately wants to be based on the ill-suited plots the writers keep going with.

What are the minimum requirements?

Art must be at least flat colors. Fics must be at least 1500 words. These are MINIMUM requirements and you are welcome to do more! We encourage everyone from all sides of the fandom to join us, but the pairing of Luka and Marinette MUST be the focus! Background pairings are allowed, as well as mentions of past LS.

Do I have to post to AO3?

No! AO3 is convenient for us because it allows us to reveal the majority of the works all at once, but you may post to any platform, or all the platforms, you prefer. Please just make sure you send a link to the mods so we can make sure your giftee receives it and so we can include it in our final wrap up list. Anything posted to tumblr will be reblogged to this blog, and we will do a post listing all of the submitted works at the end of the exchange.

How do I know I'll get what I want?

Well, there's obviously no guarantees, but we've done everything we can to make sure you get something you like, and every year our discord discussions are full of people worrying about whether their giftee will like their gift, so we know our participants are committed. Some people get really detailed with their prompt, and some are very general. When you sign up, you'll provide several prompts for inspiration, and you'll be able to note what you DON'T want to see, what salt level you're comfortable with, and what level of explicitness you are willing to read (none, fade to black, full NSFW, etc). You'll also be able to note whether you would prefer art or writing as your gift, and whether you would prefer to do writing or art for the gift you are giving.

Do I have to use all the prompts? Can I combine prompts?

You may use as many prompts as you want in one or more works, but you are only required to use one. Many people find it fun to combine and you can even do more than one work if you are especially inspired. We never complain about extra.

Can I do more than the minimum?

Of course you can do more if you're inspired! We're delighted when the event spawns multichap stories - but see the caveat below.

Does the complete work have to be posted on the deadline day?

We only require a first chapter meeting the minimum requirements to be posted by the deadline. However, please keep in mind that life happens, and try to address the prompts in your first chapter, so that if you are unable to finish or need a lot more time, your giftee still gets something that they can be happy with.

Can I do platonic Lukanette?

You may request platonic Lukanette in your prompts, but you must be prepared to write or draw romantic Lukanette to meet the request of your giftee.

What if I have a question about my prompts?

You'll also be given contact info for a mod who can act as a go-between to pass along any questions you have. We also have a Q&A channel in the discord and we encourage people to ask questions there and get answers from a lot of people - hopefully including your giftee! It's a great way to get a sense of your person's likes and dislikes, and it makes for a lot of fun discussion.

And the biggest question...

What if I sign up and then can't deliver? What if I can't make the deadline?

Hey, stuff happens! We'll have pinch hitters available to take over if you have to drop out so no one gets left in the lurch. We only ask that you keep in touch. If at all possible, let us know by February 5 if you need to drop out. If you think you'll be late, let us know. Dropping out will not stop you from being able to participate in future events. However, if you don't communicate with us you may be asked not to participate in the future. We send out check-in emails, we will follow up with you on whatever date you told us you thought you would finish, and we just need you to write back and let us know whatever the status is. We know it can be embarrassing to have to admit you're having trouble, but we truly understand. We're not going to shame you. When people don't let us know what's going on, it puts us in a difficult position trying to figure out whether we need to activate a pinch hitter, and leaves the poor giftee hanging for that much longer. There's no shame in admitting you can't finish - we completely understand that things happen! We just need to be able to plan around it.

Little Lukanette fic! Inspired by the ‘snow’ from @lukacouffaineappreciation 7daysofLuka for Christmas!!! 🎅 I had a lot of fun writing this :)

Marinette is feeling stress from her everyday life of being ladybug, and with the stress of the holidays coming up she seeks out some comfort from a certain blue haired boy

Bittersweet Luka x Mari ~ post breakup

Why had she agreed to do it? She had enough to deal with right now. As if being Ladybug and secretly saving the city every other night wasn’t enough, she’d promised to bake Christmas macarons for her schools bake sale. Then she had promised Alya she would take her little sisters so see Santa tomorrow so she could see the last movie showing with Nino. On top of all of that she’d now promised Rose she would design and make an elaborate, angelic dress for the upcoming winter dance. It was a lot.

She was an overly helpful person, she’d always been this way. Saying yes was just a second nature for her, and she wasn’t very good at disappointing people. Her plate was always full, then once she’d eaten away at some of the responsibilities and the plate seemed a little easier to eat, it just kept overflowing.

Christmas was only seven days away and in typical Marinette fashion she hadn’t got a single present for anyone, well other then Adrien but she had his next 30 christmases sorted. They were just friends now, good friends too, Marinette never thought her feelings for Adrien could be platonic but here she was. Maybe she could regift some of the old Adrien gifts? After all she had still to buy a gift for her parents, a gift for Alya, as well as the secret Santa she was doing with her friends! Master Fu! Tikki!?

Marinette sank down on the stone cold bench by the river, shivering a bit as she did so. Paris seemed colder this winter than it had been any other. The cold air was thick, and glittery with frost, even with all the layers of clothing Marinette had on it was still freezing. Her thoughts outweighed the cold though, she was too busy worrying about everything to notice how red her nose and cheeks had become. Her eyes were too busy swirling with anxiety she hadn’t noticed the light frost falling on her eyelashes. Her mind wondered to him, and how much regret she had for the way things ended between them. She missed Luka, and with all her heart she still loved him, but she couldn’t bear the extra responsibility of loving him, it was too dangerous for them both. She was so deep in thought she hadn’t even noticed when someone sat down on the bench next to her.

“Hello Marinette.”

His voice took her by surprise, she jumped back startled, which caused him to cover his mouth, stifling a giggle.

“Luka! Sorry I didn’t even notice you. I was just ….”

“Overthinking?” Luka said smiling, shuffling a little closer to Marinette.

“Was it that obvious?” Marinette looked down, trying to hide her eyes, knowing full well Luka could read them like a book

“Your Marinette, you’re always worrying. You can talk to me about it you know.”

Marinette looked away, she always told Luka her problems, it seemed like a regular thing now to the point she was starting to feel guilty. Every time she went on crazy and rambling Luka just sat there, supportively listening and taking in her each and every word.

“Don’t feel bad about it, you’re my friend Marinette, one of my most dear friends. I’ll always listen to you.”

Marinette signed, knowing Luka genuinely wanted to hear her worries, “ I’m just getting so tired of it all Luka. Every second of my time is accounted for, and I can’t catch a break. There’s things that I have to do and things I’ve promised to do, and they’re all combining into one giant time consuming lump and I feel breathless. I think sitting on this bench is the first moment I’ve had to myself for weeks.”

“You’re a busy girl Marinette, you always seem to be rushing off to do something…important.” Marinette sunk down the bench, feeling guilty remembering all the times she’d made excuses during the dates she and Luka had been on, all of times she had to transform to ladybug and abandon her friends on liberty. After all she was the reason they’d broken up, and had make Luka so sad. “You have to take time for yourself, the holidays are stressful enough time for anyone. You’re an amazing girl Marinette, and you shouldn’t overwork yourself. You need to find the right balance, you can’t press every piano key down at once, it’s impossible, you’ve got to select what notes to play at the right time, and don’t play too fast or your fingers will ache.”

She giggled at his musical euphemism “Thank you Luka. You always cheer me up.”

“Anytime Marinette, I’ll always be here for you, even if it’s just as friends.”

Marinette paused, wondering if she should say what she wanted too, “I…I‘m still really sorry about that Luka, how things ended up. I didn’t want things to be that way, I don’t even think I wanted things to end at all. It was just all too much.”

She looked at his eyes, they were showing nothing but calmness and compassion for her. Luka was good at reading people but he was even better at hiding his own emotions. Marinette knew how much pain Luka hid, and she knew that pain was inflicted by herself. Luka put a reassuring hand on her shoulder, resting it on top of her pink, knitted scarf.

“I understand Marinette, and it’s okay.”

“No Luka it’s not okay! I didn’t want -!” Her voice trailed off and she could feel cold tears prickling in her eyes, the icy wind making it harder for the tears to stay dormant. Her hands instinctively covered her face, and she turned away in embarrassment.

“Marinette you don’t have to hide yourself, you’re beautiful even when you cry.” Luka whispered, slinking his fingers between hers and pulling them from her face before pulling her into a hug. “I’m here for you always, and I’ll put your feelings before my own because I know you need it. You’ve made it perfectly clear that I can’t know the truth, and as much as I want to know I respect that you can’t tell me. The little things that pile up on top though, they’re okay to tell me aren’t they?”

Marinette sniffled, throwing her arms around Luka returning the hug, “I’m always using you for advice and I can give you nothing in return.”

“But you do give me something Marinette, you give me your smile.” Marinette’s blueberry eyes met Luka’s, she had to admit his sweet words did bring a smile to her face, she didn’t consider it payment for all he did for her, but she still couldn’t stop her lips from spreading at his words. “It’s getting cold out, do you want me to walk you home?”

“What about you?”

“I’ll be fine, it’s not a far walk, but I think my dad said he can pick me up in his tour bus”

Marinette nodded and stood from the bench, and Luka followed suit. The glazed over path made Marinette stumble back, she was about to fall to the floor when a warm pair of arms grabbed her from behind, and set her back to her feet. “Thank you Luka, I didn’t realise how slippery it had gotten.”

“No problem Marinette, it’s just a shame it’s only icy and there’s been no snow.”

“Yeah I agree. Even though it’s the coldest winter we’ve had for years there’s still been no snow, Christmas doesn’t feel right without it.”

“Yeah, even when it does snow it doesn’t last long.”

“It’s honestly so pretty when it snows, I love how beautiful the city looks in snowfall I wish it would last forever.”

“That’s a nice wish Marinette, I don’t think it can snow forever but if I could wish for anything this Christmas I’d hope for some snow this winter for you, if it would make you happy.”

“That’s really sweet Luka.” She smiled at him.

“Actually I think I’m being a little selfish with it too…” Marinette cocked her head confused by what he meant. How could Luka ever be selfish? “I’m wishing for snow to see you smile, but mostly I think I’d like to see how radiant you look as the snowflakes float down behind you.”

Marinette just laughed, Luka always seeming so perfect. The two walked slowly through the slippy streets, looking at the twinkling decorations that lit up Paris. After a couple of more close falls from Marinette slipping, Luka took her hand firmly, arching his own arm as a support beam. Marinette blushed but said nothing, stealing glances at Luka when he wasn’t looking.

He looked so handsome in the crisp night, his soft, fluffy hair looked like a galaxy against the night. His eyes so brilliant blue, so full of the Christmas wonder. She hated being a superhero sometimes, she just wanted to be a normal girl who could have a normal boyfriend and do normal couple things.

“You’re overthinking again Mari.” Luka smirked, side eyeing her

“Sorry aha, I was kinda just trailing off from the world again.”

“Talk to me.”

“I just wish I was normal..”

“You’re not normal though, and that’s what’s so special about you. You have a tune that no one else can play. Everything about you is extraordinary. You’re like a beautiful, winter snowflake, each snowflake that falls is different yet every one is individually beautiful , and the more layers that form the more stunning you become.”

“You always know what to say Luka.” Marinettes cheeked turned crimson, now matching with her frozen cheeks and Rudolph nose. “Do…do you really think I’m as beautiful as a snowflake?”

Luka’s eyes darted up to the blackening sky and he smiled softly, turning his gaze to meet Marinette’s. “As beautiful as the ones falling from the sky.”

“What do-“ she started, before Luka span her round to see the first snow fall. Majestic white droplets dancing down to the ground, swirling around the landscape of the city, each droplet of snow that fell complimented the dazzling lights that decorated Paris.

“Looks like you got your wish.” Luka said smiling

“It’s so beautiful!” Marinette exclaimed running out towards the snow covered grass in the park, twirling about in the snow fall. Snow fell on her bluebell hair, and covered her shoulders.

“I got my wish too.” Marinette turned to look at him. He was stood watching her intently with such a loving gaze in his eyes, just pure adoration. Watching her excitement prancing about the snowy night, it was the highlight of his whole year.

“Merry Christmas Luka.” Marinette said pulling him into a snow covered hug.

Luka pulled her in deeper, planting a light kiss of her forehead. “Merry Christmas, Marinette.”

I like lukanette regardless of whether they’re platonic or romantic or something in between or completely outside the spectrum

Never really felt chemistry with adrigami though. Like I see how they could be friends but they just never seemed to really vibe? As if they were reading a script in declaring how important they were to each other but there was no real emotion behind it. I can’t really find a way to attribute Kagami’s insistence on pursuing Adrien to anything a normal person would consider as a regular crush and Adrien never really seemed to have much interest in Kagami so it gave the vibes of him just kinda going along with it just cuz (it’s been an issue with the show never having Adrien put effort into non romantic relationships at all post S1 with the only exception I can think of being getting laxatives for Marinette that one time? idk but the lack of importance given to his platonic relationships made the little effort they made him put into romantic interests feel like a bad coping mechanism)

As for Luka and Kagami on their own

I quite like Luka but think he could’ve done without the daddy drama. Also idc what canon says, he will be a music therapist whether he wants to or not. I hc him having like three different jobs as a young adult rip

With Kagami, I like a combination of various aspects of the 3-5 different personalities she’s had so far but she’s too inconsistent for me to have solid opinions about her. She’ll probably have a whole new personality in S6 and every half season going forward anyway. In my heart she’s just a unknowing lesbian picking the beards that look best on paper bc she’s convinced that’s what attraction is supposed to be like (practical and with good reputation) and also as a young adult she fakes going to business school and uses the money to bribe her mother’s employees to stay quiet about her spending the time pursuing an art career

Also Kagami hates that Marinette rides a motorcycle (death machine) and gets close to setting it on fire herself before Ladybug is forced to use it as a projectile to stop a villain’s plan and miraculous cure isn’t able to save it (Ladybug is crying throughout the whole incident for some reason) (oh yeah I refuse to entertain the idea that Kagami learns maribug’s identity in such a lame way so in my heart she’s doesn’t know)

Marinette walked into school on a calm Wednesday morning, feeling content. It had been a year since she started dating Luka, and she was finally over Adrien. Things had settled down both in her civilian and superhero lives.

Chat Noir had stopped flirting with her as Ladybug, claiming he found someone he truly cared about and wanted to be with. M'Lady had become a platonic nickname, and Marinette was okay with that.

She had removed all the pictures of Adrien and his schedule from her room and replaced them with photos of her, Luka, and her friends, along with a yearly planner. She was determined to keep up with all her commitments, from commissions to exams to her duties as a hero.

Marinette had even found a great friend in Kagami. They would often go to coffee shops together and attend Art Club, where Marinette bonded with Marc and Nathaniel over their shared passion for art. Her group of friends no longer made overly complicated plans to win over Adrien, but instead enjoyed hanging out, watching movies, and attending Kitty Section gigs on the Couffaine houseboat.

As she opened the door to the locker room, Marinette spotted Adrien loading his books into his locker.

"Good morning, Marinette!" Adrien greeted her.

"Good morning, Adrien!" Marinette flashed him a genuine smile.

Marinette was finally able to have a conversation without stuttering and becoming jittery.

"How have you been?" Adrien asked.

"Not too bad," Marinette replied. "My commissions have eased up a little. And you?"

"Great," Adrien said. "Kagami and I have a fencing tournament in two months. Would you like to cheer us on?"

"Of course," Marinette grinned. "How's Luka doing?"

Here are some of the things that come up every year, answered up front for your convenience!

Schedule

What are the minimum requirements?

Art must be at least flat colors. Fics must be at least 1500 words. These are MINIMUM requirements and you are welcome to do more! We encourage everyone from all sides of the fandom to join us, but the pairing of Luka and Marinette MUST be the focus! Background pairings are allowed, as well as mentions of past LS.

Do I have to post to AO3?

No! AO3 is convenient for us because it allows us to reveal the majority of the works all at once, but you may post to any platform, or all the platforms, you prefer. Please just make sure you send a link to the mods so we can make sure your giftee receives it and so we can include it in our final wrap up list. Anything posted to tumblr will be reblogged to this blog, and we will do a post listing all of the submitted works at the end of the exchange.

How do I know I'll get what I want?

Well, there's obviously no guarantees, but we've done everything we can to make sure you get something you like, and every year our discord discussions are full of people worrying about whether their giftee will like their gift, so we know our participants are committed. Some people get really detailed with their prompt, and some are very general. When you sign up, you'll provide several prompts for inspiration, and you'll be able to note what you DON'T want to see, what salt level you're comfortable with, and what level of explicitness you are willing to read (none, fade to black, full NSFW, etc). You'll also be able to note whether you would prefer art or writing as your gift, and whether you would prefer to do writing or art for the gift you are giving.

Do I have to use all the prompts? Can I combine prompts?

You may use as many prompts as you want in one or more works, but you are only required to use one. Many people find it fun to combine and you can even do more than one work if you are especially inspired. We never complain about extra.

Can I do more than the minimum?

Of course you can do more if you're inspired! We're delighted when the event spawns multichap stories - but see the caveat below.

Does the complete work have to be posted on the deadline day?

We only require a first chapter meeting the minimum requirements to be posted by the deadline. However, please keep in mind that life happens, and try to address the prompts in your first chapter, so that if you are unable to finish or need a lot more time, your giftee still gets something that they can be happy with.

Can I do platonic Lukanette?

You may request platonic Lukanette in your prompts, but you must be prepared to write or draw romantic Lukanette to meet the request of your giftee.

What if I have a question about my prompts?

You'll also be given contact info for a mod who can act as a go-between to pass along any questions you have. We also have a Q&A channel in the discord and we encourage people to ask questions there and get answers from a lot of people - hopefully including your giftee! It's a great way to get a sense of your person's likes and dislikes, and it makes for a lot of fun discussion.

And the biggest question...

What if I sign up and then can't deliver? What if I can't make the deadline?

Hey, stuff happens! We'll have pinch hitters available to take over if you have to drop out so no one gets left in the lurch. We only ask that you keep in touch. If at all possible, let us know by February 5 if you need to drop out. If you think you'll be late, let us know. Dropping out will not stop you from being able to participate in future events. However, if you don't communicate with us you may be asked not to participate in the future. We send out check-in emails, we will follow up with you on whatever date you told us you thought you would finish, and we just need you to write back and let us know whatever the status is. We know it can be embarrassing to have to admit you're having trouble, but we truly understand. We're not going to shame you. When people don't let us know what's going on, it puts us in a difficult position trying to figure out whether we need to activate a pinch hitter, and leaves the poor giftee hanging for that much longer. There's no shame in admitting you can't finish - we completely understand that things happen! We just need to be able to plan around it.
