For a good chunk of BG3, I couldnt stop myself from comparing it to Planescape Torment, and thinking that maybe... I should be playing Planescape Torment instead..but then some delightfully fragged up things happened and I really enjoyed that.. so

I listened to the podcast that was linked here. quick summary cause i want to talk about it
as a fan of Elysium and NGE it was fun to hear Robert Kurvitz say that NGE is is first recommendation when asked what inspired disco elysium and what could give a similar experience to the viewer
he likes its reckless take on christianity, and its take on human souls
and how "colossal" it is
he imagines the world revolution to be like the Third impact in the End of evangelion ("forming a unified red ocean")
NGE and EoE inspired the apocalyptic pale side of the story and the larger setting
maybe this will help us understand the world of Elysium a tiny bit more? so that means the pale apocalypse isn't only referencing the bible but nge too. and the "reckless take on Christianity" is present with the St Miro apocalypse & the Perikarnassian churches. The comment about the world revolution makes me think of Nilsen saying "it was a loss of self [..] It ran through the world like happiness intoxication". I think the "God is in heaven and all is right in the world" is probably referencing nge too and not the original source of the quote

I already shared my 999 book, which was more work, but this was the project that made me think "oh, video games as books!"
I was introduced to the game Planescape: Torment on an old forum thread about the video game with the best written story, and this game was mentioned over and over. And I remember people saying "the writing is so good, fans have made it into a book!" So I HAD to play it, right?

I knew I wanted this book to be a leather, medieval-style Tome. As I was working on the typeset I realized there are two different fan novelizations. One which is very basic and "the good one" which is a novelization of someone's playthrough from the Something Awful forums. And it's, uh, much longer. Obviously that's what I went with. And it just kept getting longer as I went.
I started thinking about doing scraps of leather but then I saw this paper, which is a lotka with string texture that reminded me of the scarred skin of the game protagonist (who is immortal but not invulnerable). His skin is grey so I painted it grey. The endpages I designed and printed and it's just the symbols of all the factions in the game.

The K118 style is based on extant medieval books and produces a very flexible spine. This giant one does the bending-backwards party trick, but it's pretty stiff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I reinforced it with a layer of cotton and then paper over my tapes and real vellum tabs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I won't be springing for real vellum in the future, but it was neat to use sheepskin in this one, and I could sand the tabs down on the board. The board is also shaped on the end where it meets the tabs, which I did with a power sander super quickly.
The spine leather was some very thin sheepskin I got from ebay, which is lovely but almost too thin. I didn't pare it at all because it wasn't possible or necessary.
The symbol on the spine is the symbol of Torment in the game and I did it with cutting stencil vinyl on my cricut which I then used to paint in silver acrylic before I put the leather on. I then sealed it with satin leather varnish.
My endbands were improvised with some braided leather cord and linen thread which I used to stitch the cord on for a rustic look.
I'm happy with the outcome. It sits nicely open in the hand and is very readable. I'm looking forward to re-experiencing the story of this game without spending so long grinding in dungeons.

I think the saddest defence of Veilguard's writing I've seen thus far...
Came from a comment on Reddit saying words to the effect of "Why are you expecting good writing, it's a video game!"
And like, okay. Discounting the other Dragon Age games which have had good writing a lot of the time (And a lot of misses to be entirely fair. I say this as a die hard DA2 Defender.)
Imagine saying games can't have good writing? Imagine shitting on the form of art you enjoy and connect with by saying that. Hell imagine saying something so profoundly WRONG
Like, Planescape Torment exists and you want to say games don't have good writing? Disco Elysium exists, Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous exists. Fallout New Vegas and Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines exist.
And thats just in the RPG Space! Portal, Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, Hades, Cryptmaster, Spiritfarer, Armored Core Six and countless other games have wonderful, funny, engaging, heartwarming and heartbreaking writing.
So yes, I did expect good writing from Veilguard. Plenty of games have done it, Bioware has done it before. I expected better and I was annoyed when the game failed to deliver.
Games can ask "What can change the nature of a man?" they can ask "Do you feel like a hero yet?" they can ask "Who are you, that does not know your own history?" And to invoke Bioware they can ask "Does this unit have a soul?"
To dismiss the work people put in to make games that have something to say, that have writing that makes you stop and think because its "Just a game" is frankly, really sad.
Games can have good writing, they often do. And the thing is, if you love Veilguard? You shouldn't have to talk it down to try to convince others that its good.
