“So why am I hooked up to this again?” Makoto asked, beginning to get annoyed.

“Relax, it’s all just standard procedure.” Kyoko spoke professionally. “Just answer the questions honestly. The lie detector is just to make sure you’re honest.”

“Questions? What kinda questions?”

“Oh just…questions from my anonymous source.” Kyoko coughed into her gloved hand. “But that’s enough of that. First things first, what’s your name?”

“Makoto Naegi.”

“How old are you?”

“Barely legal.”

“Enough sass mister. Now, where were you on the night of the 22nd?”

“In my room, y’know, like a normal-”

“W-what the hell was that?!?” Makoto jumped in his seat after the loud buzzing noise and the shock to his wrists.

“I told you that the lie detector was to keep you honest. We just use this on…particularly rowdy criminals.” Kyoko explained calmly, as if Makoto were never even tasered at all.

“T-that can't be legal!”

“What's not legal is you lying to me. Now I'll ask you again, where were you on the night of the 22nd.”

Nervously, Makoto fidgeted in his seat before answering. “Well, most of the night I was in my room. But around 9, Leon dragged me out of my room for around 30 minutes.”

“I see. And why did Mr. Kuwata do that?” Kyoko spoke with the coldness and authority of a lead detective, which made Makoto squirm.

“H-he just wanted to hang out with m-”

“ARGH!”

“What did I tell you? Silly boy. You honestly think you can fool a lie detector? Now confess, honestly this time.” Kyoko scolded.

Makoto blushed. “He…he and the rest of the guys wanted to go out drinking and y'know…I wanted to spend time with my-”

BZZZT

“I-I WANTED BOOZE!”

“Good boy.” Kyoko smirked. “Now, what were you doing last night?”

“We just drank and…played games.”

“What games did you play?”

“Who is this anonymous source again?”

“I DIDN'T EVEN LIE THAT TIME?!?”

“I know. That one was for fun.”

Makoto pouted a bit, but obeyed. “We played a few games, a bit of strip poker and beerio kart, and then…truth or dare.”

“Mhhm. And were you dared to do anything…extreme?”

“U-uhm.” Makoto nervously glanced at the lie detector. “Depends on what exactly you mean as extreme.”

“Well, for the sake of argument, extreme would be…someone stealing my panties?”

Makoto went rigid as his face lit up. He knew Kyoko better than anyone else, so he already realized lying was pointless. However, since he knew Kyoko better than anyone else, he knew how terrible it would be to admit it! Taking a deep breath, Makoto calmly began explaining.

Well, it sounded calmer in his head.

As Makoto rambled in, Kyoko became uncharacteristically quiet. If Makoto was less panicked, he might've even noticed the subtle yet noticeable blush on her face because of an openly perverted and jealous Makoto, or her hands slinking under the table to toy with the hem of her skirt. After what felt like an eternity, Kyoko stood up from the table. After shoving something into Makoto's hand and closing it into a fist, she leans in and whispers in his ear.

“...Makoto…if you really wanted my panties…you just needed to ask~”

“H-HUH?!”

Makoto's question was left unanswered as Kyoko left the room. Uncurling his fist he saw the gift Kyoko left him.

He jumped out of his chair and fell on his back. He stared at his prize with shock and wonder. Makoto didn't have a panty fetish. Of course he didn't. additionally, if you're like me, and are easily startled; i recommend treating it like a party. have a countdown or something. be surrounded by your loved ones. take the actions you personally need to take to make yourself safe.

i have already seen mockery towards any person who feels nervous about this. for the record, it completely, completely valid to have "emergency broadcast sounds" be an anxiety trigger. do not let other people make fun of you for that. emergency sounds are legitimately engineered to make us take action; those of us with high levels of anxiety and/or neurodivergence are already pre-disposed to have a Bad Time. sometimes it is best to acknowledge that the situation will be triggering for some, and to prepare for that; rather than just saying "well that's stupid, it's just a test."

"loud scary sound time" isn't like, my favorite thing, but we can at least try to prevent some additional anxiety by preparing for it. maybe get yourself a cake? noise cancelling headphones? the new hozier album? whatever helps. love u, hope you're okay. we are gonna ride it out together.

The great thing about the White Collar OT3 is that at no point does the introduction of Neal into El and Peter's everyday lives never feels like a threat to Peter and El's marriage.

Like from the moment Neal shows up at their house in episode one he and El hit it off.

Within the first 5 episodes Neal and El have figured out they have similar knowledge and interest in the finer things, they're sharing looks over how Peter talks about and will react to things, El is telling Peter to trust in Neal a little, Neal is helping make sure they have a lovely anniversary, and El is calling Neal in to mediate/help prove her point in mini arguments to make Peter do stuff.

They also work really well because while Peter, El, and Neal might all be slightly different flavours and intensities of hyper competent adrenaline junkie weirdos, all three of them are intensely loyal to "their people" so the second El and Neal recognised that they both trust Peter as someone who will always try to do the right thing and respect them they were like "oh green flag."

So what’s the big deal about grasslands?

they’re huge carbon sinks!! grasslands store a majority of their carbon in their roots—they’re the reason the great plains of the US are so useful for farming. the expansion of grasslands in the miocene (~20mya; even though grasses have been around since the cretaceous, at least 80 million years ago) created the soil type we call mollisols.

these are carbon and nutrient-rich soils that we depend heavily on for agriculture. however, they’re only formed by old grasslands. these soils develop over a span of like 15k years as grass grow, are eaten down to the base (crown or collar depending on what’s eating them), are consumed in fires, etc. etc..

since grasses store a majority of their biomass underground, theyre better at sequestering carbon long-term than forests. they’re less susceptible to releasing carbon into the atmosphere during fires, too.

of course, the agricultural revolution put a sudden stop to this. grasslands are one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world— but you really only hear about forests because they’re charismatic, people LOVE trees. and trees are great at all, but grasslands have contributed massively to the global climate we have today. the miocene grassland expansion is partly responsible for our ice age transitions. as grasslands and prairies diminish in range, climate change ramps up. we’re losing our mollisols, too, because the areas we farm are essentially non-renewable resources.

it’s also like… SUPER hard to get people excited about grasses, loll!! they’re incredibly hard identify for a number of reasons, and the focus on lawns has introduced a number of invasive species (bermuda grass) that overtake our native grasses.

while forests store more carbon than grasslands (this is a very broad statement and truly depends on the type of forest), they aren’t exactly creating the most fertile land. if you take a look at the soil horizon under a forest, they’ll have “bleached” the dirt and taken away most of the nutrients.

it’s just…… grasses, grasslands, and prairies are a HUGE part of our global system and are disappearing rapidly. there’s almost no effort to conserve them and that makes me very sad :(( identifying and learning more about native grasses around me is a part of my effort to acknowledge this

I've said this before but the interesting thing about AI in science fiction is that it was often a theme that humanity would invent "androids", as in human-like robots, but for them to get intelligent and be able to carry conversations with us about deep topics they would need amazing advances that might be impossible. Asimov is the example here though he played a lot with this concept.

We kind of forgot that just ten years ago, inventing an AI that could talk fluently with a human was considered one of those intractable problems that we would take centuries to solve. In a few years not only we got that, but we got AI able to generate code, write human-like speech, and imitate fictional characters. I'm surprised at how banal some people arguing about AI are about this, this is, by all means, an amazing achievement.

Of course these aren't really intelligent, they are just complex algorithms that provide the most likely results to their request based on their training. There also isn't a centralized intelligence thinking this, it's all distributed. There is no real thinking here, of course.

Does this make it less of a powerful tool, though? We have computers that can interpret human language and output things on demand to it. This is, objectively, amazing. The problem is that they are made by a capitalist system and culture that is trying to use them for a pointless economic bubble. The reason why ChatGPT acts like the world's most eager costumer service is because they coded it for that purpose, the reason why most image generators create crap is because they made them for advertising. But those are not the only possibilities for AI, even this model of non-thinking AIs.

The AI bubble will come and pop, it can't sustain itself. The shitty corporate models will never amount to much because they're basically toys. I'm excited for what comes after, when researchers, artists, and others finally get models that aren't corporate shit tailored to be costumer service, but built for other purposes. I'm excited to see what happens when this research starts to create algorithms that might actually be alive in any sense, and maybe the lines might not exist. I'm also worried too.

Someone on YouTube reanimated one episode of the 70's Monkey Magic show and released it a few days ago.

artists took a segment from "Catfish, Saint, and the Shape-Changer" the 14th episode from the 1978 series Saiyuki or better known as "Monkey". It is nearly 50 years old and while I shall say the English voices are a lil dated the artists have captured the charm and humor that made the series so popular in the first place! It is creative, it is inspiring, it is so glorious to see so many different artists show how much Xiyouji means to them and how they see this funny and strange group of monks together on their holy pilgrimage. It really captures just how beloved not only the show was but how even today JTTW is for any generation and transcends time to still be going strong after 400 from Wu Cheng'en's official release!
