ctwc 2024 is this weekend!
the two agreed favorites to win the whole tournament would probably have to be alex and fractal - alex has been on fire these last few months, and fractal will look to be defending his world championship title after a ridiculous streak of wins at the start of the year!
sidnev and blue scuti are perhaps the next most likely contenders for the title! blue scuti got 3rd at the world championships last year and has since become a cultural phenomenon - and as for sidnev, she'll want to improve on her 2nd place from 2023 and win the whole thing!
but even in this new era of tetris, we can't count out the artiaga brothers... since 2020, at least one of them have made the top four, and it's usually been both of them! could andy win his first world championship, or could dog become the first and only person to win the title with two different playstyles?
with how good tetris players are getting in 2024, though, someone unexpected could always come out of nowhere and pull off an incredible bracket run! noah, myles, danv, rahmations, huff - all of these players are regulars to the top level and have potential to cause some chaos for the favorites! or maybe even... someone else???
the classic tetris world championships are taking place june 7th to june 9th, and all the action will be livestreamed on the ClassicTetris twitch page! be sure to check it out this weekend

There are other runners as well. After 13 days, Fractal161 crashed the game on the first available crash, and then a few days later PixelAndy crashed it too. So this game went from never being crashed in 34 years, to being crashed three times in a month. All because of a new play style.
I’m going to link the follow up video for the game crash and the video that talks about rolling (because the history behind that is also fascinating).
youtube
youtube
And rolling was invented two years ago.. so it took them two years to figure out how to effectively use rolling and where game crashes would occur.
And one from a different Tetris YouTuber, giving you a progression of the world records for this game. (This one is over an hour.. but if you want to go down a rabbit hole!)
youtube
So apparently the pro-Tetris scene is exploding right now because a 13 year old nerd just reached the game's true killscreen for the first time ever
#Tetris#nes tetris#I may have my own obsession with this game#I am not willing to put in the hours to become as good as these guys#but I do love watching them play#(I’m more of a modern player anyway)#but I do play both styles#Youtube

FLASH REPORT: Oklahomian Tetris Kid 'Blue Scuti' failed to advance Semi Finals against New Yorker 'Tristop' at the 2024 CTWC in California [#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE]
(Written by Craig Ichabod Williams & Mitch Williams / Herkleton Oaks Elementary School news intern of Cartoon Network News and Senior Tech Correspondent of Nickelodeon News)
PASADENA, CALIFORNIA -- E-sports in the Tetris world would fire up the annual offline competitions, rising to new heights at the Classic Tetris World Championship in Pasadena, California, United States of America (U.S.A.) last Sunday afternoon (June 9th, 2024 - Pacific local time), using a classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) version of the 1989 Tetris game.
A classic Tetris player from New York named 'Mr. Tristan Kwai', known as 'Tristop' with 3 gaming session points scored in the Quarter Finals and 311 Tetris lines, while 'Mr. Willis Gibson', knowningly also as 'Blue Scuti' with his plushie toy of Yoshis from Super Mario games, has failed to advance to the Semi Finals with 1 gaming session point and 328 Tetris lines, supposedly compete against the last remaining Tetris players in the Grand Finals, where it potentially headlined with 'Alex T.', 'DogPlayTetris' and 'TheDengler'.
Before that in a Special Event last week on Friday (June 7th, 2024). A multimedia YouTube podcaster, social media influencer, pro-wrestler of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)'s current U.S. champion and the now-guest Tetris player named 'Mr. Logan Alexander Paul', lose himself out with zero (0) gaming session point in 4th place at CTWC 2024's Special Event. Gibson received 2 gaming session points against Mr. Logan, embarking his way to a Special Grand Finals with 'PixelAndy'.
In the early-Q1 2024, Gibson has broken and beat the entire game with a kill screen crash of nearly 160 levels that breaks its unreachable code, and crushing its Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) combined. It is fully unclear if gaming developers originated from the Soviet Union in Russia and the United States of America, who legally bought copies of the Tetris game may potentially receive a 3-digit or above the 5-digit figure offline cash incentive as a reward only for Gibson.
E-sports enthusiasts across the world are feeling really low because it's the big disheartening loss of Mr. Gibson, who personally, didn't make it to the top in the upcoming Grand Finals of his Tetris game on this same night in Pasadena.
Wrapping the e-sports competition, Gibson did pull it off and missed the Tetris drop within minutes before his latest defeat for this year's annual e-sports Tetris competition: "I thought i was but I screamed of, I misdrop the 'T' and I couldn't get 3 Tetrises after that", he said in an exclusive post-defeat interview thru TeleRadyo Serbisyo: Dumaguete and OneNETnews.
Online and in-person, friends and families of 'Blue Scuti' are in the fullest of support in Pasadena, despite his loss before entering the Grand Finals. Gibson ends in 5th Place for this year's offline E-sports competition of CTWC.

as ctwc 2024 draws ever closer...
fractal's unbeaten streak in CTM tournaments has finally come to an end, dropping matches in april and may to pixelandy and sidnev! even still, the quality of play was unbelievably high...
the summoning salt tetris video was released a few days ago, as part of the most hype evening classic tetris has seen in a while! myles streamed games with summoning salt himself in the chat cheering him on, and managed his first ever glitched colors with a run that puts him 4th on the score and level leaderboards...
while myles played this game, the two-time world champion dogplayingtetris was on a run of his own! he reached level 145, his first ever glitched colors run too, but his 5.9 million score wasn't enough to move him up from 9th on the overall score leaderboard...
finally, a player on the rise lately - danv, part of team UK in the upcoming world championships! he's been tearing apart the established top seven, not only winning against gerald freeman but defeating blue scuti 4-1 in the ctwc paris qualifier!
the quality of play has skyrocketed lately, and anyone could make a potential bracket run in the world championships next month! watch this space for more...

ok the colors just appeared wrong for 147 n they wwre all diff shades of pink. it was not actually lesbianism but it is in my heart 🩷 unfortunately darkness prevailed at level 148 with the pieces now being black, dark grey, n white. even dark grey was too dark to be seen on pixelandy's CRT tv
watching summoning salt's tetris video n i had SUCH a love for competitive NES tetris during 2019-2020 n im trying SO HARD to not cry at mentions of jonas 😭😭😭 WE MISS U KING !!!!!!!!!

also to elaborate again on this (extremely well written!!) post a little;
if youve ever played tetris on an nes, the method you probably used was just to push and hold the buttons. this is called DAS, standing for delayed autoshift, and was the reigning meta for decades. there wasn't much else you could really do. so when hypertapping was invented, it took the tetris world by storm. the only problem? it requires talent: and it physically couldnt be accomplished by many people because of that .
joseph saelee (twitch, youtube) (first CTWC win in 2018; important to note he did not pioneer tapping but did achieve a lot using the method) won by tapping and was later able to accomplish level 30+ with it. which is not easy!!
youtube
in order to be successful with hypertap past level 29, you need to be able to tap left and right faster than than the pieces drop, which is at a rate of one cell per frame. the game runs at 60fps. this means if you have a perfect, tetris ready stack (4 pieces high with a right side well), you have to tap 4 times at a speed of about 12-16hz, if only for that short burst. thats 12-16 taps per second. just to translate.
which is why hypertapping is really fucking hard and not super widespread; only a few ppl can do it, and only for a short amt of time. this is why even with tapping developing, it only advanced us to about level 30-32. players have literally developed carpal tunnel from tapping.
youtube
(joseph saelee was 16 the first time he won CTWC since then the standard has only gotten younger and younger. well talk about that later .)
Cheez (twitch, youtube) invented rolling in 2021; its a technique that allows you to use multiple fingers on the teeny tiny buttons of an NES controller by rolling your fingers on the BACK of the controller, pushing the button up into your finger instead of the other way around. rolling allowed players to play on higher speeds for longer because it requires less stamina and physical talent than tapping.
cheez also pioneered the cheez grip which is objectively less important but funnier and therefore more awesome;
(for reference, CTWC and Classic Tetris Monthly/CTM requires players to have hand cameras. cheez chose to just bring his hands up instead. also look this guys freaking awesome hair)
important note: thus far, rolling (and hybrid) are the only method/s that can bring a player consistently past the level 29 killscreen. this means that there is physically no way for Bluescuti's world record to have been achieved before.
cheez was 14 when he played his first CTWC in 2020 (born 05). other recent young champions include Dogplayingtetris (twitch, youtube) and his brother Pixelandy (twitch, youtube), with dog being 13 during his first CTWC win (2020) and andy only two years older. TetrisAlexT (twitch, youtube), an incredibly good player who's fun to watch bc of his rolling grip w his foot:
was born in 08.
all this to say bluescuti comes from a long line of young NEStris champs. he played a game past the level that was designed to kill you, past the levels that are impossible to see, until the game physically could not go any further. and hes 13.
and its actually incredibly fucking impressive. its groundbreaking. the kids are alright and theyre not letting the classics stay dead. theyre fucking reanimating their corpses.
if any of this has inspired you to get into the classic tetris scene, CTM is a great place to start. they stream classic tetris tournaments monthly as the name would imply! and many of the regulars here are people you will see in world championships, as well as some newcomers.
for individual players, id love to bump some of my favorites: EricICX (twitch, youtube) , the first to hit colors on NTSC, live during CTM; Sidnev (twitch, youtube) , a renowned player and regular in CTWC (also one of the only major female players in the scene); tristop (twitch, youtube) who i love watching bc of how joyous he looks while hes playing, and many many more.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE join the NEStris enjoyers!!! its such a fun community and anddd yeah i love classic tetris, watching inspired me to play and now i hang out with my lvl12starts and pb's of 300k and yeah. yeah
So apparently the pro-Tetris scene is exploding right now because a 13 year old nerd just reached the game's true killscreen for the first time ever
#i love love love classic tetris ive been in the community since 2018. please. please please#tetris#sorry op i love tetris i love the scene. sorry#Youtube#tetrisposting

DOGPLAYINGTETRIS 🐶🐶🐶 the 2020 CTWC was actually SO FUCKING INSANE to witness. the finals were between him n pixelandy, WHO WAS HIS BROTHER !!!! THEY WERE LITERALLY PLAYING IN THE SAME HOUSE. ONE OF EM WENT INTO THE OTHER'S ROOM TO GIVE HIM A HUG RIGHT BEFORE THE FINALS. i dont remember which was older but one of em was 13 at the time n the other 15.
also the saga of nemu booking it to his friend's house after his area lost power right before the semifinals was so stressful to me personally. the organizers had the other match go on so he could make it n he got there in time !!!! i think he ended up in 3rd place that year ??
watching summoning salt's tetris video n i had SUCH a love for competitive NES tetris during 2019-2020 n im trying SO HARD to not cry at mentions of jonas 😭😭😭 WE MISS U KING !!!!!!!!!
#text#also heartbroken to know that joseph never hit a documented 1.4 mil before his retirement 😭😭#hes around my age n was in uni when he left the scene but i hope hes doing well n is makin his way towards a degree#think he was doing sm music shit too ?
