It surprises me when people say Chapel doesn’t have a trait, personality, or plotline other than being Spock’s love interest... Let me list all the things we know and have seen about this amazing character.

Christine Chapel is a nurse on The Enterprise. She is on civilian exchange from the Stanford Morehouse Epigenetic Project. She is also a part of Starfleet’s initiative to better observe alien cultures without contamination.

M’Benga treats her as an equal. Pike called her “doctor” in the very first episode which suggests that her medical knowledge and experience must be impressive.

She is an expert on genetic modification. She can mess with your genome and temporarily turn you into an Alien. And she makes it look easy.

She is also interested in archeological medicine. She is doing fieldwork, making discoveries, and writing papers on the subject while doing her other duties on the ship.

Long story short she is quite the genius!

She is outgoing, friendly, witty, funny, adventurous, strong, brave but also compassionate and emotional.

She doesn’t judge, she accepts people for who they are.

She is confident in her abilities. She doesn’t take anyone’s BS. “I don’t think the Vulcan Fellowship is ready for me”… No one, not even Vulcans can bully or make her feel insecure.

But when she was a kid she was bullied. Milo, her Malamute, bit one of those bullies. Good boy!

As it was implied in one of the episodes she is most probably bi.

She has a vulnerable side. She is afraid of commitment. Afraid of romantic relationships getting deep. Perhaps even afraid of falling in love. She uses humor when things get too serious or personal for her. There is a story waiting to unfold in time. And i can’t wait to know more of it!

She was in the Klingon War with M'Benga. They witnessed the ugly face of war and had to make some hard decisions. They used (perhaps even developed) an illegal serum that temporarily gives them enough power and stamina to survive against Klingons. This left a scar on her as much as it did on M'Benga. We will revisit this story in episode 8 (i guess).

She knows how to fight. She is a quick thinker during stressful situations. And she is a badass. For example, she can handle space pirates and all she needs is a hypospray! She can deal with baby Gorns and survive!

She is heroic. She would jump into space without an EV suit to prevent a war.

Oh and she is also Spock's love interest and it's a delicious relationship that enrichens both characters.

This is what we got in 15 episodes. I'm sure we'll learn more about her and she will get new storylines in the seasons to come.

Ok back to fandom discourse instead of general Tumblr discourse, I saw someone complain about OFMD making Anne and Mary lesbians despite Anne Bonny and Mary Read being, quote, "Historically Bisexual" and I famously do not care about historical pirates in any capacity. Please don't teach me I don't want to learn unless it's funny. However I know Enough to address this and I want to.

I want to start with, while Mary Read(OFMD) was probably a lesbian, could be bi but in the same way that Ed could be bi. Firm evidence that she likes women, no evidence she likes men. But Anne Bonny(OFMD) was very clearly portrayed as bisexual. Even before she knew that hitting on Stede would mess with Ed she was rubbing her boob with that cup and she kissed Stede. Man attracted behavior.

But more importantly, the idea that Anne Bonny and Mary Read (real pirates) were historically bisexual is fucking ludicrous. First of all the term bisexual is younger than the golden age of piracy. I'm not as brushed up on my queer history as I could be but I'm pretty sure the term bisexual was coined around the turn of the 20th century. Which is almost 200 years younger than the pirates in question.

But if we're saying there's historical evidence for Anne Bonny and Mary Read having sexual relations with both men and women we sure don't have that either. Anne Bonny and Mary Read's alleged female sexual partners were each other, the claim for which dates back to a book that was written to scandalize the rich people to whom it was marketed and all the claims within are suspect. Anne Bonny had two husbands I think so she was probably into men given that she was already a pirate by her second marriage, but who knows we can't ask her she's been dead for 300 slutty slutty years and I don't think I need to explain why a woman in the early 18th century might marry someone despite being unattracted to them. And as for Mary Read, she has no documented husbands and I think the only thing that suggests she might have ever been intimate with a man is a prison pregnancy which could be the result of rape, but also pregnant people weren't executed by the crown and getting pregnant so you have 9 extra months to live and possibly orchestrate an escape is the most straight for pay scenario I think I've ever heard so... You know... Not very "historically bisexual" of her (paging @piratecaptainscaptainpirates for a fact check)

And finally. Why do you care? OFMD doesn't care about history. It doesn't want to teach to teach you anything it is a romantic comedy about fake guys made up around 2 sentences on a Wikipedia page and a general cultural perception that is based on a 300 year old game of telephone. OFMD is not trying to be historically accurate and if it was it would be bad because pretty much every pirate from that time and place was both a rapist and complicit in the slave trade. 1 - Favorite crew member/companion?

bonnie anne my beloved. she’s so cool I wish foxes were real.

2 - Favorite world?

marleybone. the aesthetics and music go hard and the story peaks here

4 - What is your favorite class to play as and why?

musketeer for soloing cause it's the easiest imo and also the most fun, privateer for group play cause I like playing support

5 - What are the backstories for your Pirate? (Parents' death, where were they trained, Etc.)

Esmee: armada/skull island. Grew up among the rats in the sewers, having to steal what she could to get by, leading to her being quite adept at sneaking and using daggers. Strongly despises the Armada since she lost her parents to them, so she tends to be a lot more reckless whenever in a battle against clockworks.

Remmy: storm/marleybone. Was aboard a ship with his parents and sister, Maeve, when a storm struck. His parents died in the storm while he and Maeve where separated. After which, he was found by a Marleybonian ship and the dogs took him in. He grew up in Marleybone training to be a privateer but eventually found ranged weapons to be more to his liking. Was aboard a cargo ship tranporting weapons to Port Regal when he got captured in ambush by the Armada, and met Esmee that way.

Brynn: lost/marleybone. AU character of my ice wiz Brynn, just thought it would be fun to have her as a pirate so yeah no backstory.

Flint: mutiny/mooshu. haven't really worked out a backstory for him, this is just what it says in game. Will likely be change once I develope him more.

Maeve: squid/krokotopia. As mentioned earlier, she is Remmy's sister who was seperated in a storm (that a squid may or may have not been present in idk yet). Ended up in Krok where she learned magic.

6 - Who is your LEAST favorite crew member/companion and why?

wing chun, his voice and personality is a bit grating. idk I don’t really hate any of the mainline companions, and most of the non-story ones aren’t memorable and are lackluster combat-wise so they all meld together, so again I don’t have strong negative feelings towards any one in particular.

7 - How many Pirates do you have?

six, have five maxed out, the sixth was actually my first pirate I made, a musketeer named Ingrid, but I didn't make it that far into the tutorial before stopping. Later I made Esmee and it was then I got super into the game. I don't plan on questing with Ingrid anytime but I don't really feel like deleting her so she's just kinda there

18 - Opinions on Cool Ranch?

love Cool Ranch. Visually it's gorgeous and the music absolutely slaps, however some parts of it drag and I don't like having to choose between wearing something culturally offensive or having shitty stats for my witchdoctor.

tbh I find crafting really annoying in wiz so I hope it never comes to pirate. But I would love to see events akin to wiz's lost pages/five boxes. Especially five boxes I would love to see pirate get its own version of that.

at least 3 years, can't remember exactly when I started

34 - What are the hardest and easiest parts of the game to play for you?

easiest is pretty much everything up until Cool Ranch, which is where the difficulty starts to ramp up. hardest is definitely the new updates, Tartarus and Wheeler especially.

38 - Is there anything you hope for in a future update(s)? What would you like to see?

would really love to go to Albion sometime. as for features, pretty much stuff we already have in wiz like character name/appearance changing, option to hide quests, and setting a minimum player requirement for team up, and please for the love of all that is holy give us the option to trash doubloons

kind of always knew about it through wiz, wasn't until around 2020/2021ish that I got interested in playing

Son of the Fog AU - everything's the same except Barto heard rumors abt a haunted skeleton pirate and tried to find him to join his crew. He didn't, but he starts frothing at the mouth when he finds out that Premium Luffy Lore and Brook is his second favorite strawhat

Teach him a Lesson AU - In Loguetown Barto still gets his reverence for Luffy because Luffy acted the same when put in the same situation, but he also noticed how amused Luffy's captain looked, and so becomes a Luffy And No One Else stan

Yoinked AU - Barto never really meets Luffy, since Luffy doesn't have the freedom to be a pirate

Marine Dads AU (just dog dad tho) - Barto hears abt Luffy a lot later, post-marineford, but is very inspired by his story and once he finally meets him he starts crying and Luffy has no idea what to do because Barto hasn't even introduced himself yet

One Piece/Soul Eater crossover - Barto is one of Franky's peers and was a super tough bad boi but then Luffy and Usopp (accidentally) saved him from a witch that had magnetism powers that Barto was weak against in pitchfork-form and human-full-of-piercings form. Barto founded the Luffy cult and co-founded the Usopp cult, and joined in marineford-adjacent because he would follow Luffy and Usopp to the ends of the earth

Selkie Usopp AU - Bartolomeo is very passionate abt selkie and fishman rights, and somehow knows more abt selkies than Usopp and Buggy put together (he needed to know abt Luffy-senpai's beloved's culture lest he offend one of The Strawhats)

Myths & Gods AU - Barto was rejecting gods for his whole life when he got stabbed, his arms broken, kidnapped and thrown into a field to die after a gang fight. He couldn't exactly figure out where the hell he was, only that the place was full of flowers (that were god flowers but he didn't know that). He ended up chewing on a sunflower because the seeds are edible maybe and Luffy appeared like 'Hah! First time In a while I've seen someone do that' and then brought everyone over to see the hobo sleeping in their flowers, and tell Sanji to feed him. Barto will now tell everyone that asks that the gods are awesome and they saved him and he's still a pirate but hes borderline door-to-door Mormon because he just won't stop talking abt how the gods helped him in his lowest hour

One Piece/Fruit's Basket Crossover Au - Barto was a delinquent kid (and still kinda is) that, in middle school, ended up in a gang fight with high schoolers. He and his little gang was losing miserably but then they saw a crying "girl"(Barto wasn't sure at the time) with a broken nose that pointed at the towering highschoolers and Luffy, Zoro and Sanji all came out, Zoro with a baby strapped to his back, and they all proceeded to beat the shit out of those highschoolers. That cemented them as the coolest people Barto knows, but then Luffy went up to him and said he had really cool hair and he looked like Brook. Barto had no idea what that meant but it started his massive fanboy crush as well as his entire gang's matching massive fanboy crushes

Wing AU - pretty much same as canon except Barto's got some wings with a lot of dye in them, so much it's hard to tell what kind of wings they are. He can't control his wings flapping when he's excited and he's always tripping around Luffy because he keeps accidentally flying a centimeter and then falling

Roger's Ghost AU - Bartolomeo occasionally thinks abt killing himself so he can be part of Luffy's ghost posse but he never does, he also does a lot more research into the origins of the strawhat because he doesn't want Luffy to be cursed (he knows about the curse even if none of the crew does, it was by accident)

Sun's Personality AU - Bartolomeo is in denial that Luffy isn't entirely Him, tries his best not to wonder if it was Luffy that inspired him or Nika. He had a bit of a strained relationship with his devilfruit at first but learning that Strawhats liked cohabitation with their devilfruit meant Barto put some effort into actually knowing his devil, and they ended up having more in common even if his devil is very straight-laced and traditional while Barto is Barto

Halloween au - Bartolomeo is a cockatrice that is absolutely obsessed with Luffy and draws fanart that borders on furry art of him All The Time and if anyone says anything derogatory about any of the crew he turns them into stone. He has dog ears that he wears in private

Voice: Baritone with a slight Texan accent, due to location on Mars where he was raised. 

Personality: Mars produces nothing if not direct individuals, and Kai Khan is a perfect example of this. Born in a rough part of Londres Nova in a Sino-Slavic enclave, Kai Khan grew up to serve Mars as a pilot for the MCRN fleet, but defected as soon as he could with other disillusioned Martians who tired of the neo-fascist regime of the Martian Congressional Republic, using the chaos of the Cold War between Mars and Earth to start their work as mercenaries. Shortly afterwards, he set up the mercenary/bounty hunting group, the Golden Horde in honor of their group’s collective Chinese, Mongolian, and Slavic heritage. Bold and courageous, the Golden Horde are willing to hunt and kill any and all, as long as they are paid and their independence respected. Fiercely loyal to his immediate ‘family’ of multiple husbands, Kai Khan is still inclusive of those who have been cast aside by society, especially after meeting his wife, Leda Svoboda. With both the birth of his only son, as well as the opening of the Ring Gates, he is now starting to think about settling down, and changing the model of the Golden Horde. This has set some serious issues within the faction, of which repercussions will be had. 

Flaws: Amorous and passionate, Kai Khan is a terrible flirt, loving to conquer men (but not women) and win hearts across galaxies. Completely eschewing his Martian heritage, he is fiercely independent and pig-headed, especially in battle. This makes him a fantastic ally to Clone Force 99, but a challenge to many grounded allies, such as Bobbie Draper and Camina Drummer. He is also somewhat careless in terms of others feelings or guidance, preferring to move ahead on his own accord, which can (and does) have serious consequences for him. 

Likes: Smoked black tea, the smell of wood (cedar), relaxing with his family, his son, massages, clove cigarettes, steam rooms, going fast on his ship, mixed drinks (rum and soda is a favorite). 

Dislikes: Bad smells, being bossed around, loud chewing sounds, canned vegetables, Martian culture. 

Desire: Kai Khan wants to see more freedom and liberation across the Ring systems. This draws him into more battles against the Empire, as well as into the work of Camina Drummer and the escaped clones on Medina Station. At the same time, he is desperate to settle down and give his family (especially his only child, six year old Tengri Khan Petrenko), a stable life. He is impressed with Clone Force 99 and the Rocinante as a result, and is especially drawn to Hunter, whose conflict with both a greater cause, but with a desire to protect his family, is pertinent.

Occupation: Prostitute/pornographic film subject (former), gunner/communications specialist for the OPA (former), mercenary, co-commander of the Golden Horde, captain of the light frigate Mokosh.

Personality: The most beautiful flower blooms in adversity, and Leda’s had plenty of it. An undocumented Earther who was forced into sexual work at a horrifically young age, Leda was able to get off of the planet with a stolen passport by her 18th birthday. A seasoned prostitute even by that age, she worked within communications in various Earther and Belter ships, eventually ending up on the Free Navy ship Zhong Qui, where she ran into Kai Khan Petrenko, as well as Tanke Drummer. Defecting with Petrenko (and quickly marrying him), Leda is direct, passionate, and focused, but unlike her husband, is much more guarded and quick to anger. She is protective of those she loves, especially her son, and–like her former lover, Tanke Drummer–will burn cities to the ground to make sure they are safe. Her wrath is legendary, and her friendship is not. 

Flaws: Leda knows that her beauty and body have been her greatest asset, and her hypersexuality with her many wives is tied into her deep insecurity and anxiety. This also causes her to be arrogant, pushing against quieter individuals such as Crosshair and Bobbie Draper.. Having suffered extreme sexual abuse, she is ferociously protective of her wives, and has a vicious, shoot-on-sight hatred of pirates and slavers. She is not an easy ally to win, but is loyal once done. She also struggles trusting men, viewing many as potential enemies and victimizers due to her history.

Part of it is definitely the culture clash of what constitutes "traditional" family dynamics and gender roles in the anglosphere vs. here in Poland, and part of it is the standards in the environment I grew up in, but I so often find myself utterly befuddled by some of the US-Western takes on these issues. Not only the "your family could afford having a stay-at-home mother??" but also the "your father didn't pick you up from school or do groceries or vacuum the house????" and I know this is a huge generalisation, but in times like these I wonder how much of an impact discovering The Sims series at the tender age of 7 had on me. Especially TS2, because the latter games (and TS4 especially) have been progressively sanitised. That game came out in 2004 and had a household with three brothers raising canonically one, and possibly two kids, both of which they gave birth to THEMSELVES. There were two elderly ladies living together, along with a single father whose wife left him to pursue her dream of becoming a pirate (and she was playable too). There were so many different family and household dynamics presented, from nuclear and multi-generational families to siblings living together, friends living together, single fathers, single mothers, children being raised by grandparents, aunts, uncles or their older siblings, families with biological and adopted children, childfree relationships, many single-person households, it was all across the board! And yeah lol we all know Bella Goth, the famous fridged femme fatale housewife, but there's not as much talk about the stay-at-home fathers, women who provide for the families, guys who provide for their children by being an artist (Darren Dreamer ftw!!!), women in STEM (there's so many), people with successful careers and a happy family life, just. Idk if you wanna teach your kid family can be anything, let them play TS2. And of course it is a 2004 so there aren't any obviously lgbt relationships there, but the subtext is sometimes so blatant you can't ignore it lol, the community picked up on that so hard, and the majority of the characters are canonically bi. And yeah you can have a same-sex marriage with no fuss in a 2004 game, it works EXACTLY the same as a m/f relationship. I guess it was TS2 that rewired my brain a bit, 12/10 most recommended

i half rambled a bit on this. these were good questions and i had to use my brain.

Are there cultural or lore specific aspects to their identity? If applicable, does their species affect it?

So far with Sunny, no, but I'm still working on creating her in many ways, especially since she started off as a one-off type character for a six part story that helped shape her into what she is now. Like, I didn't base any of her characteristics off any particular culture, but I would say that since her mother was a member of the Cook Pirates and is a great cook, that got passed down to Sunny who definitely sees feeding someone food as a sign of love. 

Does/did your OC ever wish they could change the way they are? Why? If it's in the past, how did they get over that feeling? (This can be about internalised homo/transphobia)

I think I've mentioned Sunny is bi or pan, honestly can't remember which, and she would be in a throuple with the right partners if asked. Her family is huge, she's seen it all with identities, orientations, lifestyles. I think if she ever wanted to change anything, it would be to have met Buggy earlier to have more time with him. 

I do like writing her being with Crocodile, who I headcanon as being trans, and the story being that she was with him when he was just starting to present male before undergoing any changes. So she's very protective of him in that sense even though he could easily handle any issues, he would have to hold Sunny back if someone misgendered Croc early in their relationship (dude is over 8ft tall but his wife is abt 5’6 and full of protective rage if needed)

1. What's your oc's gender identity? What's their relationship to their gender?

Zeno is nonbinary and uses they/them exclusively! i like to think that they view their gender as neutral and that they take a lot of pride in being super androgynous. i think for them, there’s a kind of ownership associated with binary genders and so being genderless is kind of freedom. it comes as a double-edged sword, too, though, because i also think of them as a really isolated character who leans into Being Mysterious™️ because they’ve been forced to be separated anyway. to me, Zeno’s entire character is about recognizing when something isn’t good for you and getting away from it, and i think their relationship to gender is similar

5. How did you figure out your oc's identity?

i honestly don’t have a lot of (human) nonbinary characters! it really was just because i wanted to give someone they/them pronouns! as i kept writing them, though, it felt important to keep them androgynous for the reasons in the previous question, like with that relationship between varying degrees of gender and varying degrees of freedom

8. Have they had struggles with their identity, be it due to internal or external reasons?

honestly, not really? the little i share about his life outside of Plot is that he was raised by pirates and became a traveling bard. the boy’s had a lot of exposure to what different things can look like, and if anyone had a problem he wasn’t planning on staying long, anyway. he struggles a lot with identity, but i don’t think much (if any) of it is related to gender/sexuality. he struggles a lot with how he feels about Adrian, but it’s less identity based and more concerned with how he could be deceived by him and how Ardan puts his friends in danger

9. Are there cultural or lore specific aspects to their identity? If applicable, does their species affect it?

yes and no. i think Ardan truly sees these aspects of identity as details, which gives him a lot of freedom and adds to a really open-minded view of people, but it also gets him in trouble because i think he forgets that even though these are something he feels he understands naturally, other people don’t or are more ingrained in traditional cultural values than him. i think it’s important that ABC starts with him misgendering the gods, because it’s an honest mistake. i think he doesn’t see it as important, not because he doesn’t value it, but because he thinks of it as so flexible. it’s a mistake that comes off as malicious because he’s been a part of a different culture from the places he travels to. i also think it’s important that he adopts something (mindset, info, etc) from each place he goes to- he’s meant to be this human melting pot! he values interpretation above all else, and he gets stuck when he comes up against rigidity

18. Do you prefer to give your ocs specific labels, or keep it unspecified? Why? If applicable, do you change their labels depending on circumstance?

i don’t think i have any ocs where i explicitly identify someone’s label? or at least, not any ocs that i use beyond like, a short one-off. i think a lot of my ocs have explicit identities that are important to their arcs/respective stories, but i don’t know if i’ve ever said outright that Branwen is bi or Celeste is a lesbian, for example. it had been a long time ago, but Neil Gaiman had answered a question once about how he does identities/appearances for characters, and he said that he purposely leaves descriptions vague so that the reader can decide for themselves what a character is meant to look like, and if he wants an explicit feature/identity, he outright says it. that stuck with me- i like having that ambiguity and giving readers that power! it’s like how i want to make it explicit that Celeste and Ardan aren’t white, but characters like Ulysses or Casek, etc are up to you.

every character i write has a specific sexuality/gender identity, but it’s honestly just fun for me to write it in as offhand comments (i believe at one point Celeste makes a joke about how Branwen and Ardan are so similar, but since she doesn’t like men he’s not being cute, he’s just annoying) or having it like Branwen or Ardan’s bisexuality where it’s so central to their stories that the only ambiguity is that i haven’t said the word itself. it can also be a pain because i write fantasy and it’s like…do they use the same language to talk about this? is this a universe where we need a label? do they have the same understanding of gender and sexuality? all that to say, i put myself into all of my characters to some degree, and as a result each character is gonna have some aspect of queerness to them! i have specific labels for all of them that don’t change, but like, if someone says they see Ardan as gay instead of bi, i’m gonna be able to disagree but still go “yeah i get why you’d say that”

YIPPEE im so glad you asked, let me just set up my powerpoint presentation-

iswm headcanons!

captain - queer, agender, they/them. since the captain's pretty much just the viewer, this is just my own interpretation of who i feel like i'm playing as in iswm.

mark - pansexual, guyflux, they/he. i just feel like he's a guy, but not a man. masculine in some ways, definently not in others. pansexual because they genuinely do not care about your gender, he's just helpessly attracted to you no matter what.

celci - bisexual, transfem, she/her. literally blue hair and pronouns and i love her. definently realized she was bi when watching pirates of the caribbean.

gunther - polysexual, transmasc, he/him. completing the holy trinity of m-spec invincible II members. you've heard of be gay, do crime, now get ready for be trans, throw hands.

burt - aroace, male, any pronouns. i feel like burt genuinely does not care what you refer to him as.

mack/theory crew - questioning, libramasc, he/him. closer to male than other genders, but still slightly different. the only invincible II crew member to not really be open about his sexuality, mostly because he's still figuring it out (the captain had to give him a whole 'it's totally fine if no existing label fits you, and you shouldn't feel rushed to figure out your own identity' talk)

lady/allu minium - sapphic, non-binary, they/she/xe. found out about gender when researching human culture, and was both excited that some of the labels fit them, but also mildly confused. "wait, humans have specific words for all of those things? but they're just normal personal stuff, why do you need words for those things?" (mark had to teach her why labels for different gender identities and sexualities exist. xe was less than charmed to find out queerphobia is a thing.)

bandit - bisexual, demigirl, she/they. believe it or not, she's actually had to pretend to be a human quite a few times when on the run, so the way humans identify is nothing new to them.

wug - unlabeled, pangender, all pronouns. there are multiple wugs, and it's shown that they can have preferred pronouns (e.g. that one wug who goes by she/her), but i think the wug we interact with the most feels perfectly fine being seen as any and all human genders.
