A fundamental aspect of my pirate Nolan Stormgate AU is that he is convinced he has utterly no friends. That he is not being supported when accusations are slung his way because no one liked him anyways. That he is somehow just not a good person and the ostracization is at least somewhat justified, even on false charges.

What he doesn't consider is that he's literally a teenager. All teenagers are assholes. Sure, he's especially standoffish, but still. He doesn't know that there is a handful of wizards in Ravenwood that do consider him a friend.

No one's ever told him they were friends, so how could he know? He needs that kind of clarity in relationships, or he will just assume someone is annoying and harassing him, hanging around waiting for him to snap back at them and tell them to go away. He needs them to say they want to be here, that they care about him. No one's ever done that, not really. There are those who he tolerates the presence of, who don't set him on edge, but that's just acquaintances, right?

So when Nolan leaves Wizard City, he assumes there will be no one missing him. His parents may be mad, he did steal some of their things on his way out, after they already disowned him. His last conversation with Professor Cyrus had been abrupt and hurtful, being told to leave him be. Cyrus had been in mourning and Nolan doesn't know how one is supposed to act around someone grieving.

Nolan doesn't think about Duncan. About Marlon or Penny or Mindy or Marla. People who know him, who think of him as a constant. Who walked with him to meals and asked about his studies. Who weren't competition in his school of magic, who didn't poke at him trying to anger him.

How at first when no one would speak Nolan's name after he disappeared, they thought him dead. They thought he may have been attacked by the invading monsters in the city's streets. They imagined him crushed beneath a cyclopes' hammer, mauled by a ghoul.

And to learn he just left? All alone, without a goodbye, without a note?

It hurt. But they had things to do. An Academy to set to rights. A rogue professor to track down so they could clear Nolan's name.

Then they could find him and hug some sense into him. Maybe then he'll understand that you don't just up and leave. That next time, he's taking them all with him.

Captain Hook kept a dagger pressed to my throat sending me a smirk. “You heard of me. Strange I haven’t ever seen the type of garments you’re wearing. Tell me stowaway, what’s your name?”

“Jaide, Jaide Stilskin.” Glaring at the pirate above me I slowly moved one of my combat boots kicking him in between his legs.

The pirate groaned in pain after I kicked him in his penis watching me push myself up from the harsh wooden floor of the ship. “Stiltskin - do my eyes deceive me by having the Dark One’s daughter standing before me after all these years?”

“It’s been some time since we last saw one another, Hook. But from where I’m standing it appears you have finally given up your obsession with killing my father.” Putting one hand on my hip I clicked my tongue teasing him. “I must say it was quite foolish. Vengeful for him taking your hand.”

Hook grunted getting up from the ground still wincing with some pain. “He took more than my hand, lass. Although I believe you won’t remember much after you got knocked the bloody hell out.”

“You wouldn’t give my father the magic bean that you promised him. My father had just lost my brother Baelfire and that was the only way to travel to a land without magic.” Rubbing the back of my head I somewhat recalled the massive headache I had after someone had knocked me out.

Hook chuckled, shaking his head. “I never would have guessed the woman with long blonde hair would wield a frying pan so fiercely.”

“You know my mother. You know Rapunzel.”

He smirked in my direction. “Indeed I do. I certainly found your mother to be attractive-“

“How the hell do you know about my mother!” Finding an abandoned sword laying on the ground I snatched it up. Pressing the blade tip against the pirate's throat, baring my teeth. “Why would she give you the time of a day if she knew you were planning to kill my father?”

“Because I helped her escape the Queens Black knights and return home to her kingdom before you and your father came for the bean.” Hook explained not being bothered by the blade against his neck. He locked his gaze with mine. “She hated hurting you that day but she never stopped loving you.”

Following behind my father in her red cloak I held onto the clasp of my own cloak. My heart necklace dangling from my neck that he had given to me once he had enchanted it to be magical. Allowing me to draw magic from it if I was in dire danger. “Well, well. Seems like you finally found a family… You could never have with me.” The ship was full of a lot of men who were all loyal to the man named Killan Jones.

“Papa, who is she?” Shifting my gaze to a woman with black curly hair that takes the satchel from someone that contains the magic bean. She takes the bean out of the bag and holds it up as evidence for my father. He goes to take it, but she throws the bean over to Hook, who clenches it in his hand. “Oh that’s just mean.” I scoffed under my breath.

The lead pirate who called himself Capitan caught the bean mocked to my father. “You asked to see it, and now, you have.”

The woman I didn’t know asked. “Do we have a deal? Can we go our separate ways?”

“Do you mean, do I forgive you? Can I move on? Perhaps, perhaps. I can see you are twooly in love.” My father stepped around her with his sword attached to his hip swaying. He pointed between the woman and the pirate,

She nodded. “Thank you.”

“ Just one question.” He pointed his finger at her.

She questioned him. “What do you want to know?”

“How could you leave Bae?” Several ropes anchored along the ship begin magically coming undone. And as if second nature my hand fell down onto the handle of my sword not sure if a fight was about to break out. “Do you know what it’s like, walking home that night-“

She attempted to speak. “Rumpel-“

“Knowing I had to tell our son-“

“ Please.” She begged him to stop talking.

He finished his sentence growling. “That his mother was dead?”

“ I was wrong to lie to you. I was the coward, I-“

He cut her off. “You left him! You abandoned him!”

“And there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t feel sorry for that.” She fought back.

He throws his hands up in the air shouting. “Well, sorry isn’t enough! You let him go.”

“I let my misery cloud my judgment.” She spoke up.

“Why were you so miserable?” He stepped closer to her, getting in her face.

Her next words even nearly broke my heart and I didn’t even know my brother's mother. “Because I never loved you.”

My father Rumpelstiltskin magically sticks his hand through his ex wife’s chest making me scream, clasping my freehand over my eyes not used to his dark magic yet. “Ahhh!”

“Milah!” The captain cried out running towards our direction causing me to take out my sword thinking he would hurt me. Papa uses magic to bind him to the mast and pulls out her heart from her chest. “No!”

The pirate captain managed to break free from the ropes, causing one of the hooks to fall to the ground. He runs over to Milah and gently lays her down onto the deck. “ I love you.” Baelfire’s mother whispered to the pirate.

“Papa, surely we don’t have to kill her - d’oh!” Holding up my sword at the pair laying on the ground I got cut off getting smacked in the back of the head by something really hard. My sword clanked to the deck floor with me collapsing down onto my elbows and knees.

My father cried out my name. “Jaide!”

“I’m sorry, daughter.” Rolling over onto my side my vision started blurring and there was massive pain appearing in my head where I knew I must be dreaming. A figure stood above me wearing all black with braided blonde hair holding a frying pan in her hands off to the side.

“She’s - she was the one who knocked me out that day.” I released a breath I didn’t realize I was holding inside, tightening my grip on the handle of the blade in my hand.

“Aye. Now if you’d be so kind and lower the blade I’d like to have a fighting chance to duel with you. Allow me to grab a blade of my own and I can die in the pirates way.” Hook suggests to me.

Lowering my blade briefly he pulled his sword out from his belt aiming it at me. “Can I ask you a question first?”

“Fire away, little crocodile.” Hook nodded at me.

“What kingdom did she return to. What was its name?”

Hook replied. “Corona.”

Hook raised his sword and I followed his actions having our swords hit one another the first strike we took on one another. Sliding back on my boots I charged at him swinging for his head but he swing his sword underneath my foot, tripping me where I fell down harshly on my back. “A little rusty are we, princess.”

“It’s been 28 years since I last held a sword, pirate.” Glaring up at him I heard the water crashing underneath his ship remembering we were in a Iand full of magic now. Pressing my freehand down onto the deck boards it turned bright red, I gasped in rolled feeling fresh magic running through my veins.

Hook aimed the tip of his sword to my throat standing over me. “Have you given up already?”

“Not a chance in hell. Immobilus.” Raising my freehand I launched him backwards with magic, wrapping some tight rope straps around his body and the post he was shoved into.

The pirate's sword clattered to the deck floor as he winced. “You’re just as much a coward as he is.”

“I jumped into a magical portal to rescue my daughter so I’m not a coward, pirate.” Pressing the end of my weapon to his throat he gasped for air with my nose being pushed against his. “Now you better tell me where my daughter is on this ship or things are going to get much worse for you.”

“Sorry to disappoint you. But she’s not here, just you.” The pirate responded to me.

Blinking my eyes I felt some tears falling down my face, realizing that we were even more separated than we were before she got pulled into the portal. “Emma’s - she’s - she’s not here. Where the heck is my daughter now?”

Shout-out to Marcus, one of my many ocs with horrible tastes in men 👍

Quick cut just to lore-dump a bit (skip this if ya want).

Marcus got to Ravenwood, calamity happened, Blueflower ran off to solve it. Marcus met Nolan while exploring Cyclops Lane and immediately clocked him as a pirate (cuz his bestie Griffin was a pirate) but said nothing.

Marcus stuck around and managed to befriend Nolan after a *lot* of struggle, but they got super close. Nolan was cocky and rarely did any actual work, but Marcus was willing to help him improve one step at a time, which worked to make them all the more connected. Nolan associated his forward progress with Marcus, and therefore Marcus was a valuable pawn.

Then Marcus suddenly wasn't a pawn, and in the most neurodivergent way possible, Nolan confessed a crush to Marcus. Marcus (who'd had a crush 0.2 seconds into hearing Nolan be obnoxious) returned the sentiment, and in my headcanon lil universe they're a pair.

Marcus is a beloved little pastel goth, and Nolan is still the most hated student on campus, but they're working on their shortcomings together.

OKAY. Pirate Nolan Stormgate moments.

What the hell is his flag. I'm personally thinking his parents had two different more generic flags, and he definitely has to make his own because he's a dramatic Bitch and we love that for him!!!

SO.

Colors??? Gut Instinct is Myth Gold And Cobalt, however, while that would indeed be cool, the reason (in my AU) that he's even a Pirate In The First Place is to abandon magic & wizardly shit. So he never even uses Myth Magic, and cannot continue studying it seriously and would feel like using the colors of his old school is more like he's falsely representing the magic he abandoned rather than keeping a reminder of his past/origins.

Gold however, should stay.

While I'm tempted for it to be the main color and not the trim, and know that our boy Nolan is wearing Banana Yellow in canon. I can't do that in my brain aesthetically. Have Mercy.

So I'm thinking gold trim, and like, brown? maybe? as like a leather & gold type thing? or black? something neutral that isn't going to clash or stand out Too Much. While the boy's dramatic, he's not exactly Hot Pink Dramatic like my OC Alexander.

AND HIS FLAG SYMBOL???

I was considering several things. First, the Myth Eye/symbol. Quickly dismissed for above reason. Then, I looked through the images on google for p101 flag symbols. I'm considering the ram, or the elk/stag, or potentially a tree, not like the design in p101, but more looking like Bartleby or Ivan in shape w/ no face. BUT considering the color scheme, a tree wouldn't look good.

A brown ram or deer with gilded horns might kick ass though. A Bird might fit better though, like an eagle or hawk, considering he's a musketeer.

I'm just rambling all my thoughts here, I'd like some of your thoughts though! What Colors would YOU pick for Nolan? What Symbol? How would his thoughts on those colors/symbol change over time after adjusting to p101 world(s), how would he think on those if your pirate!nolan is from p101 and goes to ravenwood after?

I'm late but happy Film Score Day (April 3rd)!!!

Just a few of my favorite film scores include Star Wars, pretty much any Christopher Nolan movie score but especially Interstellar, Inception and Tenet, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and of course my all time favorite soundtrack, TRON: Legacy.

And of course I have to honor the amazing composers behind these amazing albums as well. The absolute legend, the Maestro himself, John Williams. And perhaps the second best to do it, Hans Zimmer, who along with Ludwig Göransson help create my favorite parts of Nolan films. And it's not a movie but Göransson's soundtrack for The Mandalorian is phenomenal. On the subject of Star Wars shows I have to mention Nicholas Britell and Kevin Kiner. The Kiners are the true successors to John Williams' Star Wars legacy. And of course Daft Punk and Joseph Trapanese created the soundscape that is Tron, and Trapanese did it again with M83 on Oblivion. I could go on but my last two favorite film composers would be Klaus Badelt and Nathan Furst. Badelt of course did the first Pirates of the Caribbean (though Zimmer often gets credit for all of those films) and he also did one of my personal favorite movies, ExtremeDays. And Nathan Furst just went way too hard for the third BIONICLE direct to DVD movie. I mean, that Web of Shadows soundtrack is solid!

let’s be so real, David Nolan would have been the Chapter President of Pirate Haters Anonymous

The problem with Shepherd David x Hook is that David is never depicted as being mean enough.

That man hates pirates through and through even if he’s not a prince yet

The running gag with my interpretation of Pirate!Nolan Stormgate is he is very talented. He has a lot of unique skills he's developed and perfected from being raised on a pirate ship (athleticism, cooking, hand-to-hand fighting, mechanics, navigation, sailing). However, he does not want to be skilled in them. He wants to max out magic.

The problem is he struggles with magic. He was born into a different magic system. He was taught in a hands-on learning environment while wizards have a more traditional classroom setting. He was raised in a different morality system. Every part of that causes him to struggle, but he can't ask for help because he burnt bridges early due to massive cultural differences and the one adult in his life he thinks he can count on is a dickwad stuck in grief.

In summary, Nolan Stormgate was born to be a pirate, but he desperately wants to be a wizard.
