to me i feel like the hells were meant for a campaign more like cr2, which i feel like that's been discussed before even on your blog? like idk orym and braius were the only characters who actually fit this campaign, maybe imogen for obvious reasons. but laudna, fearne, ashton, chetney all felt like they belonged in a lower stakes, more personal campaign
Yes, I have talked about this extensively: honestly, either a Campaign 1 or Campaign 2 structure would have served them better. For what it's worth I feel like everyone other than Laudna managed to make something of it - Fearne and Chetney frankly did a lot of work to explore their concepts, it was just never rewarded or frankly in many cases revisited in any way (again, consequences do not mean punishment; they quite literally just mean that one's actions lead to results that follow from said actions), and while I ended up not caring much for Ashton as a character, I actually think Taliesin played them with a strong logical throughline. But it is true that the plot really, in the end, served none of them, not even Orym or Imogen (Braius it kind of did, but he was developed so late in the game that he was designed around its flaws). There was just never space to really explore the dark fairytale Ashley talked about early on; Tuyen and that other toymaker back in Marquet were never revisited nor was Ruidus's impact on Chetney nor was there an appearance of Doreo, and even Drixlich and the offers to the pirates vanished (side note but Travis is perhaps actual play's best plot thread generator and I think it's telling that he kind of gave up on that eventually because it never fucking went anywhere, after two campaigns where it consistently did). When it comes to Imogen I am reminded of the possibly apocryphal theater review for King Lear that went "the lead actor played the king as though he momentarily expected someone to play the ace;" she was a great concept but at no point inhabited her decisions meaningfully on the rare occasions she made them. Orym was never really given the opportunities Caleb had to explore grief and while I personally am okay with his deal with Morri being canceled, it plus the whole Vax thing really feel like a thumbing of the nose at Liam's RP choices across the decade. Ashton's temporary growth and then regression honestly feel very real, just deeply unsympathetic, though the ending of the story where nothing about the All Minds Burn or his talk with Shady Sally or the titans or the Hishari came up and the genuinely great moment of sacrifice turned into another "and then Essek fixes it for you" was narratively empty. But the more I think about it, the more this was largely a failure of Matt to tell a different kind of story with any measure of success. I think this campaign in many ways played hard to Matt, Marisha, and Laura's weaknesses in particular (and a little bit of Liam's if I'm being honest in the end) whereas the others embraced their strengths, and this is what happened; the rest of the cast kind of made the most of it.

CRITICAL ROLE CAMPAIGN 3 EPISODE 86 SPOILERS
RAHHH, SPOOKY LAKE MINI ARC!!!!!!
God. I fucking love you Matthew Mercer.
The back door is indeed a back door and while that is exciting, I honestly need us to table all theories.
First of all, Matt really did his big one with this campaign and all of the spooky horror elements that are scattered all over. The nightmare king, Laudna, Jrusar tbh, Uthodurn and the Savaliir woods, the creepy ass monsters and gjosts we keep running into, the GHOST PIRATES, the fucking shattered teeth as a whole, RUIDUS, and now this fuck ass lake.
The way Matt slowly built up the suspense and the intrigue of this odd abandoned town that started as just curiosity and location discovery to help us understand where in Exandria they were, and then slowly became an investigation into how...empty it was despite no signs of struggle or even a mass exodus to somewhere safe... and then the notes about the disappearances... how people were rumored to have just...walked into the water.
GOD IT WAS SO GOOD.
The way my heart dropped out of my ass when Liam used the stone to talk to Dorian (I don't wanna discuss that "I miss you" that definitely felt like an "I love you", I'm so upset rn Robbie please come home). I knew the stone wikldnt work because he'd already talked to Caleb (which !!!!! CALEB!!!!!!! AHHHH) but then Matt was like "you hear something outside, it's Dorian" and I just???? Almost shat myself when I understood what was happening.
It is...interesting that whatever is in that lake only affected FCG, Orym, Chettie and Ashton.... it can't just be that they weren't women because... that doesn't really make any sense so it must be something magic related? Because they were making charisma saves and the witches have either max charisma or amazing fucking charisma. (But so does FCG? I think? Whatever).
I loved everything about that battle and the lake but I especially loved Laudna's whole deal... Dread Pirate Queen Laudna fan art needs to flood my social media feed so much that I get sick of it (I wont). She's such a silly little guy I love her to bits. (We won't discuss she who must not be named except to say... she was kinda spitting during that whole later interaction)
FINALLY THESE DUMB FUCKS SLEPT BUT GOD. I WAS CONVINCED MATT WANTED THEM DEAD FR.
ANYWAY. JESTER. JESTER LAVORRE. JESTER HAS SENDING. SHE TALKED TO US. SHE TALKED TO IMOGEN. THEY’RE EITHER ON THEIR WAY TO THE KEY OR TO THE LAKE AND EITHER WAY I KNOW WE'RE GONNA SEE THE NEIN AGAIN IDC IDC
Kinda almost broke down in tears when Jester spoke to Imogen because I just??? love Laura Bailey so much??? AND WHENEVER THE OTHER PCS SHOW UP I JUST GET SO HAPPY
I know Jester is being a terrorist with sending rn, and I know she's gonna message Imogen constantly.
Did not want them to leave that lake until Kiki's group showed up the next morning but my hellians never listen to me so cest la vie.
(Also????? Fearne and Chetney romantic tension??? Let's discuss. Let's also discuss how bad Fearne wants to kiss Imogen)

Critical Role, Campaign 3 Episode 108
Whoa ... tough names. Well done, Matt. Oh ... a PowerPoint Presentation? Hmmmm ... actully this looks quite professional ... ah ... yes ... guess I spoke too soon ... yeah, Sam, I don't think you REALLY thought this one through ... okay, the tattoot thing was kinda cool ... Matt: "This is a PIRATE book, Sam. Could you try and do it as a pirate?" Sam: "I am, Matthew. Because capitalists are the modern pirates." Oh ... I see. Okay ... yeah ...
"We get wet." Um ... okay, Marisha?
What's this? A GAG REEL? O.O Oh, this is kinda fun ... XD Just wish it was bigger ...
Shit, yeah ... that last episode got TRIPPY at the end ... where's THAT gonna play out here?
Unconscious prisoners? Oh ... yeah, we forgot about that shit ... now what?
Laura rolls ASS right at the start ... Laura: "I have 4 hit points!" Taliesin: "Stop hitting yourself!" XD
Double-team? Braius, they're really not thinking about THAT kind of party right now ...
The guardians? CRAP!!! Not good, not good ...
Mass Cure Wounds? Thank you, Dorian ...
Hunter's Bane? Hmmmm ... IS something going on? Oh, wait ... oh, is that IRA? Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me ... yeah, I was NOT surprised by that AT ALL ...
A mental Deception Check? Against the NIGHTMARE KING?!!! Oh, this'll have to be HIGH ...
Kashador? Hmmm ...
Wait ... Chetney can BANE?!!! Nice ... O.O
Modify Memory? Okay, then ... oh yeah, that's right, fae are naturally resistant to this stuff ...
Yeah, so ... THAT hasn't gone all that well ...
Psychic Lance? REALLY?!!! O.O At SEVENTH FUCKING LEVEL ... oh man, this is gonna be NASTY ... oh my fucking GODS ... Travis: "On this fucking guard?!" Laura: "Well that's all I have!" 34 points of Psychic damage? Oof ... shit ... oh no is he DEAD?!!! I am NOT surprised that happened the way this was going ...
It didn't work ... no shit ... this is about to go VERY BAD ...
Nice takedown, Fearne ... now here comes Ashton to potentially MASSIVELY overdo subduing him ... 44 points of damage on the FIRST attack? Fucking hell ... oh, so now he's RESIGNED to killing him ... okay, then, just PUREE this poor bastard ... 24 points this time ... so ... is he just knocked cold, or is he, like, PROPER DEAD?
Well that's it, then ... Dorian's just putting the Emissary under a sleeper hold then ... meanwhile Orym delivers the ultimate knockout hit with the Sending Stone? OOF ...
What, take everything back to Nana Mori's? You sure about that?
Gloamglut? Hmmmm ... is that old dragon lurking or just GONE? Which is more of a problem right now?
Imogen Messages Nana ... is it 11 or 12? Hmmmm ...
An hour? That sounds ... complicated ... a lot can happen in an hour ... but at least they got time for a Short Rest while they're at it ...
Orym Flea-jumps to the roof to keep an eye on the surrounds ... yeah ... still no sign of the dragon ...
Crap ... and Zathuda is now coming to ... great ... oh yeah, 25 EASILY knocks him out again. Nicely done, Braius ...
Spirit of Death? Interesting ... oh gods ... Laudna summons Bor'dor ... O.O ... she has him HAUNT Zathuda in the capacity of a BABYSITTER ... wow ...
Ashton (to Laudna): "You finally managed to creep me out."
Braius' convoluted plan to fool the Emissary ... yeah ... bizarrely, that might actually WORK ...
Dorian makes the already concoluted plan even MORE convoluted ... and possibly a bit GAY too ... XD
Continuous attempts at Bane ... oh, but FINALLY the Emissary FAILS his save ... YAY!!! About damn time ...
Phantasmal Force? Oh yeah, that could work ... but it IS pretty risky ...
What ... Laudna should just ASSUME the identity of the Emissary for the rest of her life? That is, like, a SUPREMELY DUMB idea, Braius ...
Oh okay ... so now they're putting their wildly overblown concoluted plan into action? This should be entertaining ...
Meanwhile Fearne is now STEALING ALL THE EMISSARY'S SHIT ... I mean OF COURSE she is ...
Fuck ... here we go, then ... O.O ... wow, and that wasover SO FAST ... almost an anticlimax ... XD ... you magnificent idiots ...
Born theatre kid Dorian offers his underwhelmed critique ... LOL
Take 2? Hmmmm ... best to get their shit WORKED OUT this time, people ... Ashton's being the forecful director of the scene ... cue MASSIVE overacting ... wow, that was such a mess ...
Final take? Dear gods help us ...
Balls ... Zathuda ESCAPED while they were working out their scene? Oh, that is SO BAD right now ... O.O Good thing he's Haunted, at least ...
Imogen is now GIVING CHASE ... this is getting SO COMPLICATED ...
Initiative? Crap ...
Chetney rushes outside and just CHUCKS HIS CHISEL AT HIM ... holy fuck, THAT HIT HIM?!!! Unbelievable ... 15 points of Piercing damage ... and he's DOWN again? Bloody hell ... that was a VERY SHORT bit of combat ...
FUCK!!! GLOAMGLUT'S BACK!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!
Gloamglut takes a swipe at Imogen ... and misses ... so it grabs Zathuda and prepares to flee ...
Braius makes it to the outside entrance ... oh, Misty Step? Nice, do that ... Channel Divinity ... Nature's Wrath? Oh nice ... yeah, DEFINITELY do THAT ... grab that dragon! Oh no ... what mad shit is Riegel planning now? Oh VERY WELL DONE, you muppet ... you just outthought yourself ...
Orym runs under Braius' legs and attacks Zathuda head-on while he's still out ... first is a miss, but second hits ... a Pushing attack? Hmmmm ... nope, not with that massive Dragon strength ... meanwhile Zathuda is now making Death Saves ... oh shit, so he's just DEAD?!!! Wow ...
Crap ... Gloamglut is now SERIOUSLY angry ...
Ashton is in ATROCIOUS shape right now so he's gonna be USELESS for three rounds ... lovely ...
Imogen tries to mount the saddle again ... okay, then ... O.O ... Animal Handling? Ballsy ... oh, with a Psychic Connection? Interesting ... rolling a 19 or 20 will do it, otherwise it's a bust... 6? Holy fuck, Laura Bailey ... so she just tries to REASON with the dragon, ALSO telepathically ...
Dorian sprints outside ... and he's just SHOCKED by what's tranpiring ... yup ...
Laudna blasts it with a Ray of Frost from INSIDE THE BUILDING?!!! Wow ... thank fuck for Spell Sniper ... still a miss, though ... balls ...
Fearne joins the others outside ... oh yeah, this is just a TOTAL MESS, she's not gonna be too impressed with this ... oh, she's trying the family card on Gloamglut? an even BALLSIER plan ... O.O ... roll INSANELY well please, Ashley ... wow, Laura's reaction to that roll CRACKS ME UP ... XD ... 31? HOLY FUCK ... wow ... IS THIS gonna work? Please fuck let this shit work ...
Chetney holds Inflict Wounds to wait and see how this plays out ... O.O
Wait ... is Gloamglut CRYING?!!! Awwwwwwwwwww ...
Braius prepares Ensnaring Strike for JUST IN CASE ...
Orym joins the rest to hold his attack ...
Ashton uses the hammer to restrain the two unconscious fae ... and waits ...
Imogen's hoping tyhis is gonna work ... while using Mage Hands to stroke the dragon in a calming manner along with Fearne's soothing ... wow ... smart ...
Dorian back off back inside as discreetly as he can ... yeah ... "You're doing great. You're so strong ..." For Inspiration ...
Laudna Messages Nana Morri to inform her of the situation unfolding ... and holds her action, ALSO just in case ...
So IS THIS working? Fearne continues doing what she's doing ... then very carefully tries to MOUNT the dragon ... 27? Oh nice ... it lets her get up into the saddle behind Imogen ...
Oh ... now it REALLY wants to eat Chetney ... O.O ... is she going to have to establish dominance right now? And now it's clutching Braius ... wow ... and now Orym too? AND Chetney? Wow ... this is suddenly REALLY complicated ...
IS the dragon under control, Imogen? REALLY?!!!
And now they're flying ... oh boy ... this is all kinds of fucked again ... O.O
Oh, here comes Nana ... time to go, then ... the ones left on the ground are gathering, then ...
Yeah, this could just all kick off again in the air with Nana ... oh thank fuck for Imogen being a horse girl ...
Okay, back to Ligament Manor, then ... phew ... that worked out surprisingly well in the air ... oh, time for a break? Okay then ...
So right now Nana's basically like a nightmare fuel version of Bird Howl? Lovely ... O.O
Yeah, I think Zathuda's probably proper dead by now, guys ...
All right, we're back at Ligament Manor ... yeah, that's NOT topiary ... everybody coming to a landing in turn on the roof garden ... okay ... how's THIS gonna go, then?
Oh, so Gloamglut's all chill now? Okay ... that's gotta be a good sign, right?
Crap ... is Nana thinking about EATING the fae right now?
Laudna attempts to explain the situation to Nana ... in a really convoluted way ... I'm not sure if she REALLY gets the gyst of that ...
Wait ... she's TRAPPING Gloamglut? Hey, not cool ... Fearne just got it ... but yeah, she's got a point, she does owe it a little mistreatment right now ...
What about Zathuda? "Put him through the Loom?" Why does that sound really bad? O.O
So they really are doing this ... okay ... this is going to be interesting, then ...
So ... The Loom. Oh boy ... why is this making me think about that rack in Apostle? It looks REALLY horrible already ...
Oh fuck me ... it's FLAYING HIM?!!! Layer by layer? Holy fuck ... this is DEEPLY unsettling ... she's literally turning him into a flesh tapestry ... O.O ... yup, like I thought, pure nightmare fuel ... he is now a piece of SERIOUSLY macabre art ...
Nana: "It's good to have hobbies, isn't that right?" Sweet fuck that is awful ...
So they can question him now? Okay then ...
Primal Savagery? Go off, Fearne ... O.O
Whoa ... bleak shit to lay on a guy, Ashton ...
Matt describes the subtle horrors on display. Travis: "You okay, Matt?" Very true, very true ... we're ALL a little concerned about the DM right now ...
This ia all turning into a weird opportunity for Fearne to finally connect with Zathuda as her father ... it's all deeply weird ... I'm really not sure what to make of this right now ...
The key to the Ruidusborn? Oh, that's useful information ... spill, creepy living tapestry man ... O.O
He wants Fearne to be his last revenge on Ludinus ... well yeah, he's probably gonna get his wish eventually ... XD
Zathuda: "Now I'm furniture ..." Yeah ... he is that ...
Crap ... does this mean he can't offer up any real information about the new fortress at the Maleus Key? Balls ...
Yeah, let Fearne keep the dragon ... it's so COOL ...
A blood ritual? Oh yeah, that's the ticket ...
Yes! The skinny about the Unseelie ... good call, Imogen ... oh, so this likely hasn't really taken all that much off the board? Bugger ... the Ruidian forces are MASSIVE?!!! Great ... O.O
Ludinus' weakness? Smart, Orym ... hubris, yeah ...
Travis is HATING all of this ... well done, Matt ... you've creeped your boy out again ... XD
Whoa ... Braius, nice ... does Fearne have any siblings out there? No? Hmmmmmmmm ... I'm not convinced that's really true ...
No ... NOT THE TIME, people ... do not bring Foreigner into this ...
Birdie! Hey! Okay ... maybe not the best of timing for their arrival ...
Oh, Nana can make it go invisible? Yeah, probably for the best ... O.O
Yeah, Laudna and Nana bonding over twistd artistry is ENTIRELY to be expected ... XD
Fearne and Ashton continue to be adorable ... :3 Meanwhile Sorian and Imogen are DEEPLY unsettled by what they've just witnessed ...
Oh gods ... the porno ... don't invoke the porno again, guys ...
Nana Morri's fucking with the fae's heads ... yeah ... that's some more creepy disturbing unpleasantness ... aaaaah ... the cracking knuckles ... and OTHER joints ... yeesh ...
Nana: "If at first you don't succeed ..." Laudna: "Wait! I know this one! Shut the fuck up!" Nana: "Push until they stop moving." Ye gods ...
Fuck ... this poor bastard is just being TORTURED right now ...
Oh my gods ... HOW are you all rolling SO FUYCKING BAD right now? This is SO FUCKED ... NOW what are we gonna do?
O.O ... fucking hell ... THAT'S how they make the topiary things? That's just SO FUCKED UP ...
So we just have to rely on what the guard reveals to make this work? Oh boy ... I don't have a huge amount of faith in this plan ...
And so it's all down to Dorian, then ... okay ... Matthew, you BASTARD, that wasn't funny ... XD ...
Kamal? Awwww ... poor kid's really being used right now ... so here we go, then ... let's see if this finally fucking takes ... Bane! And more Bane! AND Silvery Barbs! SOMEHOW it finally fucking takes ... oh my FUCKING GODS ...
Awwww ... sweet Coriolus, MVP of the episode ... :3
"MISSION COMPLETE!!!" Yeah!
Wow, that's one QUICK maid service ... XD
Right ... what's the next step then?
Laudna: "He looked at me and said 'Spooky lady wants to talk to you'." Hmmmm ... maybe talking to the Matron could be the right call right now?
You're definitely selling yourself short there, Imogen. You really are something special ... you're some proper Seventh Son of a Seventh Son level of special ...
What, Nana might have an IN with the Matron? Interesting ...
So sleep, then back to Vesselheim, and then ... whatever's next? Or deal with Gloamglut first? Well, sleep on it first ...
Awwwwww ... Dorym sweetness ... just what we need right now ... :3
There's HOT SPRINGS?!!! Really?
Oooooooooh ... Ashton! You little shit! I love it! XD
Fearne's spending the night out with Gloamglut, then ... awwwwww ... :3
More Pate bizarreness ... XD
Oh, okay ... Braius and Asmodeus? How's this gonna go? HOLY SHIT he's getting an answer! O.O Is that Matt Mercer doing an impression of Brennan Lee Lulligan?
A vision of hell ... and the god of lies himself ... wow ... that'ssome crazy shit ...
Fuck me ... is Braius propositioning Nana Morri? O.O Holy fuck and she's INTO IT TOO ... oh my gods is that ACTUALLY HAPPENING?!!!
Chetney came SO CLOSE to being trapped in his fancy demonic armour forever there ...
Bompers! Hi! So cute and so unsettling in equal measure!
Fearne starts bonding with Gloamglut ... gods, they're so sweet together ... :3 Awww ... and it's accepting of Ashton too ... nice ... and they drift off into a nice, peaceful sleep ...
Yeah, that's EXACTLY where I expected Matt to call it a night this time. Good place for it, really ...

Okay but did you ever think about
how Jaron has often said that if there is anyone, anyone, other than him who could be a good king, he'd surrender the throne right away. And he could have given it to Tobias, Roden, Amarinda, Mott, Kerwyn, Harlowe, etc. because he trusts them all with his life. But he didn't. Because (although never explicitly mentioned) while he trusted them, he didn't know if Carthya would- 1. that could lead to a revolution in which the first target would be whoever is on the throne + their loved ones or 2. he just couldn't see them as rulers of Carthya- instead he though they'd be better off with some other roles in the castle. And then came Imogen, who he trusted with his life and the well-being of his country. Flashback to when his parents kicked him out of the castle- ever since then, he hasn't felt like he really deserved the throne. But he's so very loyal to his country that he was willing to try, to do his part until someone could come along. That someone was Imogen. So on top of his desire to marry her, he felt relived that should anything happen to him, there would be someone who could rule Carthya the way it should be ruled. And over time, his belief that Imogen would make a much better ruler than him just kept growing (keep in mind this is after losing his family, rising to the throne after four years of disguising as an orphan, going to the pirates on his own to win their loyalty, winning a war, and going through so much emotional and physical torment from literally everyone). And then came that plot twist in TSC where Imogen was revealed to be of royal descent, and that just made me feel so much sadder for Jaron because at that point Jaron didn't even care what happened to him because not only was Imogen the best person he could think of to take the throne, but she was a queen by blood too, and (again, not explicitly said) Jaron couldn't help but think, "why should I even be around when nobody needs me anymore?" even after literally everyone in Carthya believed he was the best ruler they had ever had so he just did what he could for Carthya and didn't care for his life at all. Idk it's just very depressing to think about
Long live King Jaron

Pirates: We're going to kill the prince.
Jaron: Good luck.
Connor: I'm going to hire the pirates to kill the prince.
Jaron: OK boomer.
Veldegraph: This fake-ass bitch better prepare to be disembowelled.
Jaron: I'm pretty attached to my bowels actually.
Vargan: Prepare to be buried with the rest of your Country.
Jaron: And I took that personally.
Devlin: I'm going to *successfully* kill the prince.
Jaron: I'm king now, haven't you heard? You illiterate, fat swine-
Wilta: King Jaron. More like soon-to-be-dead Jaron.
Jaron: You'll have to try harder than that.
Imogen: I think we need to have a little chat...
Jaron: *screams, runs, hides*

Am I about to word vomit about a series that isn’t super well-known and I haven’t even technically finished since the fourth book was released and I never read it? Yes. Yes I am.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Ascendance series. Formerly the Ascendance Trilogy but I just discovered there was a fourth book released in 2020 (I think I was told before but I forgot 💀). A bit of a staple series in my adolescence and cemented my love of sarcastic asshole main characters (along with Percy Jackson)
But, more seriously, beyond Jaron’s fuckery on the surface, I kinda wanna dig deeper into his character. Cause, even thinking about his story for more than a minute is rather sad. He was the second-born of his family, the royal family, and an embarrassment to them because of his shenanigans (I’m willing to bet he has ADHD). The black sheep. The screw up. Everything that his brother, the crown prince, wasn’t, and it reflected poorly on him. He was impulsive and passionate, but most of all, he was hardly 11 when he went missing.
11. Eleven years old when he barely missed being attacked and murdered by pirates. Eleven when he escaped to Avenia, a country that was looking to devour his own and slaughter his people and murder his family. Eleven when he was told by his father not to come home, as it was his duty to prevent war between the two countries; one that Jaron’s own, Carthya, would lose. Eleven when he was disowned, essentially, and orphaned and had to survive in a hostile country. The jump from prince to starving street urchin couldn’t have been a pleasant one.
Then he spends the next four years living as this vagrant. I can’t imagine what his thoughts towards his family were; how his father told him not to return, for the good of Carthya. How his mother would never know what happened to him, her cherished son, and simply had to wonder for those four years what had happened, until she was murdered with her husband and son. The revelation that Conner had murdered his family in order to prompt the power struggle to find the missing prince, or rather, create a convincing copy of the prince. And the further revelation that Conner had hired the pirates to attack Jaron’s ship to kill him, but had failed.
Would he not feel as if his family’s deaths were his fault? He never got to say goodbye to them, not properly, and he was hardly 15 when they died. He was still a kid. He already buries his true feelings and emotions under layers of bitterness and sarcasm and defiance. Almost every one around him betrays him or tries to kill him in one way or another. His entire world is deceit and lies and murder, so it’s no wonder he’d grow up salty and bitter at the world around him.
He’s king. 15 and king of a country. And despite everything, he still does everything in his power to protect his people. Cause even if he is salty and bitter at the world and the fucking assholes around him, he’s going to do his duties as king and protect his people to the best of his ability. He’s protective of those he cares about. We see that with Imogen, how from day 1 at Farthenwood he’s sticking up for her and looking out for her. He often goes to ridiculous extremes to protect the ones closest to him. Even to the point where he puts himself in jeopardy.

Note
ive been rereading the ascendance series for the first time since the last book came out and i feel crazy but there is so much romantic tension between jaron and roden like i dont remember this the first time through😭 theres this one scene in TCK where rodens challenging jaron for pirate king and at one point tackles jaron, and when he thinks jaron's hurt roden whispers to him Word for word "Is it your leg? Are you hurt?" mind you roden's pretending to be working for the enemy and they are also fighting like. 6 yards away from said enemy. And I could list a billion other things in the OG trilogy like??? unnecessary
😵‍💫😵‍💫advocating for my polycule imogen x jaron x roden Jaron has two hands. and if i said jaron and roden had more romantic connection than nico and will did in TSA一💥💥💥💥
me and my demiace ass who only ever saw the boys as platonic: hi
BUT I SEE YOUR VISION ANON. I SEE IT!
advocate for those polyrights! we need more polyrights!

you don’t belong here
word count: 2158
part 2
The room went silent when Imogen’s eyes locked on mine– or maybe I just stopped processing sounds. Shock had emptied my lungs like a knee to the chest. There wasn’t enough air in the whole room for me to draw breath as her gaze scraped across my body.
(The once-over was familiar: she was searching me for injuries. She had done so many times before, with frustration and fondness mixed on her face. This time, the fondness was gone.)
The corners of her lips twisted downward. “King Jaron.”
“That’s him?” asked a gray-haired woman beside her.
“Oh, it’s him. I would recognize that face anywhere.”
I finally found my voice. “Imogen, what are you doing here?”
“If His Highness addresses me by any name other than ‘king’, you may run him through, Malina,” she told the woman beside her. Roden snickered. Imogen’s icy gaze jumped to him and the sound died. “The same applies to our other prisoner.” Gregor cleared his throat softly and her fingers closed around the hilt of the sword at her hip. “All of our prisoners, in fact,” she said impatiently, rounding on Gregor. “Captain, do you have something valuable to say for once or are you just testing my patience? I warn you, it’s short.”
Wait. Gregor was a prisoner too. Which meant, not necessarily a traitor. Which meant, I thought, my heart lifting, a potential ally. But he had made himself cozy with the pirates, to the point of roaming freely– unless his hands weren’t just folded respectfully behind his back, but tied. Why was he even here? His lips tightened at Imogen’s sharp tone. The sight was absurd, and almost, almost funny. Gregor, captain of the guard of Carthya, ducking his head in reluctant deference to Imogen. King of the pirates. This couldn’t be real.
“My king,” he said. “The conditions may have changed, I admit. But I beg you to remain open for negotiation.” What had he offered her? What did Imogen even want? My head ached. Oh, the devils were having their fun with me now.
“I could just kill him now,” the gray-haired pirate offered, with a sharp-toothed smile. Gregor blanched. “Make a nice little example.”
“Kill them both,” Roden suggested.
“The pirates swore to kill the king of Carthya,” said a second pirate. “It’s a matter of honor.”
“A matter of Devlin’s honor,” Malina said. “Do you want to go take it up with him?”
“Devlin’s honor is all of our honor,” Roden shot back, rising onto his knees. His chains pulled him back.
“Remember your position, mutineer,” Malina said.
“My king,” Gregor said desperately, raising his voice over the quarrel. “If you let me send word to Drylliad–”
“Everyone shut up!” Imogen’s eyes blazed. The noise died immediately. She squared her shoulders. “Take the captain to the root cellar and lock up the mutineer with Erick and his boy. In thirty seconds, King Jaron should be the only one in this cell beside me.”
I wasn’t at all sure I wanted that. Roden’s chains were rapidly unlocked. “Maybe Gregor should stay,” I suggested, my voice high-pitched. I would take any chance of an alliance now.
“Coward!” Roden spat on the ground as he was dragged out, earning him a kick in the calves.
I grimaced. “As it sounds like you’ve already started negotiations– guh–” The tip of Malina’s sword pressed against my throat and I choked on my words.
“Address her as king.”
“Malina. Out,” Imogen ordered. As a pirate caught Gregor’s elbow and spun him toward the door, my suspicions were confirmed: his hands were tied behind his back with knotted rope. Malina sheathed her sword, bowed, and exited. The door clanged shut behind her. The sound echoed through the suddenly quiet cell.
I didn’t trust myself to speak. I pulled myself upright, now that there was no threat of attack from Roden. The rusting chains pulled at my wrists as I folded my hands in my lap. Imogen stood motionless, with light from the barred window catching in the uneven strands of hair that drifted around her chin. A dozen emotions churned in my gut– fear, confusion, fading shock, rising anger. This wasn’t the same Imogen I thought I knew, I reminded myself. I had to tread carefully.
But my sense of self-preservation buckled under the growing weight of my anger, and I had never been as good as Imogen at holding my tongue. “I don’t understand what’s going on,” I said, striving to keep my tone even. “What are you doing here?”
She didn’t answer.
“How long have you been working for the pirates? While you lived in the palace? While we were in Farthenwood?”
She tipped her chin up, expression inscrutable. “Why do you care?”
“Are you kidding?” I rattled my manacles. “Because I want to know if you decided to join the pirates despite finding out they wanted to kill me, or because of it.”
“There you go,” she said. “This isn’t about you. I was trying to get away from you. I thought, surely, this is the one place he wouldn’t be stupid enough to come.” She couldn’t hide the venom in her last words. True or not, the words were meant to hurt, and they did. But the spark of anger in her voice brought a vicious sort of relief. Anger, at least, I could understand.
“And the whole assassination thing didn’t give you pause?” I demanded.
“Why would it?” she said. Her knuckles were white on the hilt of her sword. (Her earlier threats still rang in my ears. I had a vivid image of myself, pinned to the wall like a skewered moth, with blood spreading through my tunic. I needed to tread carefully.) “Because we’re friends? Because you care about me, and want me around? Oh. Wait. No, I think you had something to say about that last time we saw each other.”
I felt a stab of guilt as I remembered what I had said to convince her to leave the castle. It had been for her protection. I resented her bringing it up now, trying to distract me from the matter at hand, reminding me of something I would much rather forget. I had said some cruel things, I knew. But that was a far cry from siding with assassins. “You know I didn’t mean that.”
“On the contrary,” she said coldly, “you were very convincing.”
“So this is about me,” I said, narrowing my eyes.
“You’re not listening to me!” Her bracelets glittered and clinked as she jabbed an accusatory finger towards me. (I had never seen her wear jewelry before. I had tried to give her a necklace, once, soon after she came to court. She refused it.) “You can’t think about other people for one second. It’s all what does this mean for you, how will this help you win, how are you going to show off how clever and brave you are while everyone else is just– just swept into the corner to collect cobwebs.”
“I did it to protect you,” I said. “I thought Roden would target you next.”
“Why would he do that? He knew I could gut him like a fish!”
“Well, I didn’t know that!” We were both too loud now. Imogen’s sword was out, the tip weaving to punctuate her words, while I strained against my chains. My guilt was becoming harder and harder to ignore. (She knew me too well. If she saw a flicker of regret, she would pounce.) “Since you never saw it fit to tell me you were a master swordsman.”
“Do you really want to make this about things we didn’t tell each other?” she snapped. “Face it. You refuse to trust people that you claim to care for, you would rather be cruel than vulnerable, and it’s finally come back to bite you.”
My cheeks flushed. “I’m sorry. Is that what you want to hear?” I snapped. “I was stupid, and I shouldn’t have said those things, and I’m sorry.”
“Except you’re only sorry because it got you into trouble,” she said.
“What do you want me to say? And don’t you try to take the moral high ground while you have me chained up with a sword at my throat!”
“I’m not going to attack an unarmed child.”
I couldn’t let the insult slide. “You realize that you’re a child, too.”
“I am a king,” she hissed. “And unlike you, I earned my crown.”
“I have done everything–”
“Look at you,” she said. “You ran away from Carthya. You deceived your regents. What if you had found Devlin, and he recognized you? He would have tortured you until you gave up every secret you knew, and then killed you. You are a danger to your country and to yourself.” Her words hit like physical blows, leaving me gasping. My eyes burned.
“Enough.”
“I’m not done,” she snarled. “You risk your life on idiotic schemes and you make enemies of your only friends. Because we were friends. Whatever you say, we were friends, and I cared for you, and when you sent me away it hurt like you had carved my chest open, and I hated you. And the only way I thought I would find any peace was to get away from you, and then here you came.”
“Imogen, enough!”
“I told you not to call me that!”
“Or what?” My chest heaved. “You’ll kill me? Do it. If my life is really so worthless.” In instant, her sword swung up, poised over my pounding pulse. I lifted my chin, bracing myself for a biting pain. Her brow was knotted, her shirt soaked with sweat. Her sword hand shook.
Then she lowered her blade, stepping back. “You just don’t understand.” Step, step– she retreated, shaking her head. “You can’t understand the position you’ve put me in.” Step, step– her back hit the opposite wall and she slid down until she was sitting, her cutlass clattering to the ground beside her. Her expression was suddenly, unbearably weary.
The fire had died in both of us. “Tell me,” I said softly.
“I can’t.”
Neither one of us spoke for some time. I had the strangest feeling of seeing her for the first time. Her cheek bore the shadow of a bruise. Damp strands of hair clung to her neck, twisting like roots. I imagined brushing it back, tucking it behind her ear.
“I don’t suppose you could let me go,” I said. “I won’t come back.”
She shook her head. “Too many of my pirates see your life as a blight on their honor– the one mark that Devlin couldn’t kill. I wouldn’t survive another mutiny– and for Carthya’s sake and mine, I need to remain king.”
“I understand.”
She stood. “Well, I think I know what has to be done.” I took some consolation in her pained expression: she didn’t seem to take pleasure in the thought of my impending death.
“Where are you going?”
“I need to talk to my first mate, and Gregor. See if they can change my mind.”
My heart caught in my throat. “And if not?”
She had the grace to meet my eye. “I’m sorry it ended up like this.”
***
She returned late that night, or maybe early the next morning. I would never be sure which. Her expression was tight, pained. I didn’t need to ask if there was good news. She knelt in front of me, holding a mug of some dark liquid.
“Would you die for Carthya?” she asked.
“If I have to.”
She held out the mug. “I thought… this would be gentler than a sword.”
I caught a bitter whiff as I took it. Poisoned. Ironic that, in the end, I would die the same way as the rest of my family. What would Darius have thought of this? Would he have done the same? No, I knew– he wouldn’t have come here.
“Are you ready to hear my last words? I spent a long time thinking of them,” I said conversationally, swirling the mug.
“Oh?”
“‘Better to die a king than to live a coward’,” I said, and took a gulp of the poisoned drink.
“Hmm. I was hoping there would be an apology in there somewhere,” she said. I opened my mouth to respond, but she pressed a finger to my lips. “No, those were good. Don’t ruin your last words.” My fingertips were turning cold. I took another sip. “Listen, we both did what we thought we had to. Don’t look back. I won’t.”
My hands were numb, and my head felt like it had been stuffed with cotton. “I really am sorry for what I said,” I mumbled. I took one more sip, then tried to set the mug down gently. It slipped from my grasp, spilling across the packed earth floor. A moment later, I slid to the ground beside it.

fandom: the ascendance trilogy word count: 1068 flavor: melodramatic canon-divergence @ascendancejaron here we are!
As pirates slunk around corners and out of darkened doorways, forming a ragged circle around us, I patted Mystic’s neck, as much for my benefit as hers. The men and women of Tarblade Bay weren’t the nicest-looking lot of outlaws I’d met-- nor the cleanest, I though, gagging as the smell of sweat and rancid breath hit me. One man stepped forward, lifting his chin in recognition.
“Erick, my friend,” he said, catching the reins of the thief’s horse. “How long has it been?”
“Too long, Agor. Too long.” Erick put on a more convincing display of joviality than Agor, but even his voice sounded strained. He jerked a finger over his shoulder. “This is Fink, an errand boy of mine. And this is a new member of my family: Sage.”
There was no mistaking the wave of whispers that passed through the crowd at my name. At a hand signal from Agor, a young pirate peeled off from the crowd and trotted towards the half-hidden barracks. I didn’t like that at all. “Why have you come?” Agor asked, eyeing me.
“To talk to Devlin,” I said, before Erick could answer. “I have a proposal for him.”
That was the wrong thing to say. Agor nodded and I was pulled from my horse with a yelp. I struck out at my assailants, but within seconds four pirates had pinned me down, face in the dirt.
“What’d he do?” Fink asked shrilly.
“I need to talk Devlin!” I said, spitting dirt from my mouth as I lifted my head to glare at Agor. My hands were bound behind my back, tightly enough that it would take a good minute or two unobserved before I would be able to free myself.
“You’re too late for that, boy,” Agor said. “Devlin’s dead.”
***
I only knew of one person who could have beat Devlin and set the pirates on watch for the name Sage. So Roden was the pirate king. My plan had suddenly become a lot more complicated. I was strong-armed toward one of the buildings. I could hear Erick’s half-hearted protests in the background. A nice gesture, if stupid: he’d be better off distancing himself from me.
Then one of my captors opened a metal-reinforced door and yanked me into a dark room. “I hope you’re noting my good behavior,” I said, resisting the urge to kick out as a manacle clicked into place around my ankle. Unfortunately, this didn’t seem to be the time to put up a fight. The pirates shuffled out and I blinked, my eyes adjusting slowly to the dark. “So when do I get to talk to Roden?”
One of the pirates sniggered. “Now,” she said, and pulled the door shut.
That was when I saw the second prisoner: a broad-shouldered boy with a matching chain around his legs, attaching him to the wall. That didn’t stop him from lunging at me. I jumped out of the way, only for my manacle to yank me back. I slammed to the ground, bruising my chin on the stone floor. Roden’s fingers stopped short a foot from me as I rolled back, panting, against the wall. “Sage,” he snarled.
“What are you doing here?!” I asked. He yanked at the chain that held him fast. He was seething, teeth bared, but looked mostly unharmed-- other than a few mottled bruises on his arm and a cut on his lip. “I thought you had become pirate king!”
“And I thought you were king of Carthya,” he said, swiping his sleeve across his bleeding lip. “And yet here we both are.”
“But they said that Devlin was killed!” I had given a little thought to what I would tell him when we came face to face, to how I might persuade him to switch loyalties and aid Carthya. But all those words had fled with my shock. “Who else could kill him?”
“The devils are taunting me,” Roden growled.
“Roden,” I said. “Who put you here? You’re the best swordsman I’ve met.”
Roden snorted. He seemed to have accepted that as long as I stayed pressed against the far wall, I was out of his reach. He sat against the wall, staring at me balefully. “That’s not what Mott said. Or have you forgotten everything you learned in Farthenwood?”
“Mott knew you were incredible,” I said. My head hurt-- from my fall, from puzzling through Roden’s terse answers. I hoped Erick and Fink would be alright. I was starting to think I was past helping. “He said that while he was at Farthenwood he trained three of the finest swordsmen Carthya has seen. Remember? Tobias spit out his tea in surprise-- he was still covered in bruises from tripping during practice.” Roden leaned his head back smugly. He remembered. But he still hadn’t answered my burning question, and my anxiety grew with every sound of approaching feet. He clung to his silence like an anchor, happy to drown if he took me down with him. “Roden, please. Whoever the king is, he put you in prison! The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right? If you answer me, I swear I’ll get you out of here. That’s a better offer than anyone else will give you.” He pursed his lips. I groaned. “It looks like I’m not the one who’s forgotten our lessons from Farthenwood, you--”
“Mott wasn’t talking about Tobias, alright?” Roden snapped. I almost melted with relief at his grudging cooperation.
“What?”
“The third swordsman he taught,” Roden said. “He was talking about--”
He was interrupted by the door opening. Two pirates came in, flanking the entrance, and then Gregor strode in. Gregor, my captain of the guard, grey-haired and sour-faced as ever. So he was the traitor. My gut twisted.
“King Jaron,” he said, his lip curling.
“Greg,” I said, making a face. “What a nauseating surprise.” But something still didn’t add up. Gregor had never been to Farthenwood. Although he seemed to be on good terms with the pirates that sidled aside to let him past, his wrist lacked the tattoo that marked theirs. Roden’s gaze shifted to someone behind Gregor.
“Hail the pirate king,” Gregor said softly, his eyes fixed on mine. And then a girl walked in, her dark hair cut sharply to her chin, a curved sword at her waist, her sleeves pushed back to reveal golden bangles and the pirate’s brand. It was Imogen.

A pirate’s desire
A/N: YAYAYAYAY! I finally have internet on my computer so I’m gonna post the first part of this fic, hope you guys enjoy it! Also just a disclaimer, if the characters are somewhat inaccurate or there’s plot holes, I’m sorry! I’m currently on a trip so I was only able to write most of it but actually sharing got complicated but anyways, yeah enjoy! Lemme know if you’ll want a part 2 :)
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Salty air sprinkled the air as waves crashed against the boat. Jaron squinted towards the setting sun, which now illuminated the seas in vibrant shades of orange and pink. He let out a sigh of content before turning to the crew from atop the forecastle deck. “Men, get your smelly scallywag bottoms to work! We’ve almost made it!”
His eyes scanned the main deck, looking for someone until he finally found him, with a disappointed glare. Or in other words, the regular look Jaron got from him. “Ahoy Tobias, matey-” Jaron started as he walked towards his direction.
“Jaron, don’t. Roden and I told you that the pirate accent sounded terrible and that still hasn’t changed.” He frowned, opening up a book of mythology. A wicked grin rested naturally on Jaron’s lips as he replied.  “What you call terrible, I see as a form of uncomfort for you and Roden therefore it’s actually quite beautiful.”
Tobias rolled his eyes, continuing. “Also, I believe we’re much closer than I’d calculated beforehand. Once we pass Sirena’s rock, then the pod should be near the area.” Jaron clicked his tongue, as he began to pace around. “And what do your books say about catching the fish itself?”
“Not much. Just avoid hearing their voices. That’s the main warning when it came to hunting them, some sailors became so entranced by their voices that they jumped off their ships willingly to be eaten.”
His eyes shimmered with fear as his voice spoke quietly to avoid spooking the rest of the crew. Though, not much could be done anyways if they did hear. “Ok, don't listen to the freaky sea song sung by women fish, got it.” Tobias nodded briefly before walking away to presumably do more map studying. A familiar face appeared as he walked up to Jaron. “Roden, you look absolutely terrible.”
“Yes, because that’s exactly what one wants to hear when they get vomited on. You never were the best with words… or accents” His lips pressed in a thin line, although humor dripped from his expression. Jaron rolled his eyes, once more as he glanced at the horizon. The sun was nearly gone, they’d be at Sirena’s rock any minute now.  “It’s truly a gift you get to interact with me everyday or would you rather have a visit with the hungry ladies down below? I’m sure you won’t be able to make an opinion on how they speak when-”
Jaron’s expression, although now only lit up by moonlight, tensed. The boat creaked as it passed by a rock, standing north of the island. It wasn’t very large but it was recognizable anywhere. Sirena’s rock, drips of pure white glittered down it. Sirena’s first and last tears of genuine love, as the tellers of the myth like to call it.
A shriek pierced the quiet air, followed by a splash. All heads jerked towards the direction of the splash, peering over the ledge. Jaron did the same, his breath hitching. A red spot stained the dark seas. No one spoke a single word for several minutes.
Just then, a cry filled the air for a brief moment. This time however, Jaron along with a few others were able to see for a split second the sailor, before he met death. A green slimy strip of seaweed wrapped around his neck. “The blasted women fish, they’re here.” Jaron muttered to himself, as he snuck down on his stomach to the main deck.
He found his men, their eyes widened in horror. Jaron felt a tinge of guilt, he may not have mentioned the specifics when inviting the men to come mermaid-hunting. “Alright, matey’s-”
“No, not the accent.” Tobias snapped. Behind his snarky exterior, hysterical fear was shining in his eyes. How did he even get down here?, Jaron thought for a second before shaking the thought. As he opened his mouth to continue, he shut it when he saw that Tobias wasn’t done. “I can’t believe we’re going to get killed by mermaids, you better have a plan.”
Idiot, he thought, closing his eyes for a moment. When he opened them again, just as he expected, in place of the terrified stances were infuriated glares. Aggressively whispered comments were thrown all around until a terrifying beautiful melody filled the air silencing them.
“Cover your ears, now!” Jaron commanded in a low whisper as he slowly stood up from his spot to scour the island they were drifting closer and closer to eyes didn’t make it far when a flash of slimy green wrapped around his right forearm, pulling him intensely towards the edge. His left hand instinctively went to the sword that rested comfortably at his hip. With a swift movement, he sliced the seaweed. A whimper followed.
A weakness, good to know. Jaron thought before he yelled out to his crew.  “Men, attack!”
Shrieks and hisses came from below as more strips of green flew towards the boat. The sailors quickly scrambled to the cannons, stationing them towards the murky waters. Another seaweed flew towards Jaron’s head, it missed by a centimeter and stuck to an empty barrel instead. He quickly picked it up and tossed it over.
In return, a yelp of pain came. With likely only seconds, he looked around the deck to make sure no other sailors had been lost. From what he could tell, all still seemed to be fine until his eyes landed on Tobias, smacking the seaweed wrapped around his knee with his book.
There was no time to go down there so his hand flew towards his belt and pulled out a dagger. “Let’s hope this hits both your hand and your book.” Jaron aimed the dagger and with as much force as he could threw it. It stuck swiftly to the wood plank on his right. He yanked it out and cut the green strip. He stood up, the dagger glued to his hand.
Jaron’s eyes then drifted to Roden who had the most seaweed springing towards him and the cannon he was maneuvaring with one hand while the other was aimlessly attacking. He’d be a good first mate, Jaron thought as another seaweed of green shot towards his chest. He pat his waist and pockets quickly as the plant pulled him harshly to the edge. A few crewmmates, including Roden and Tobias, noticed. I held back from the strength of the pull but it got increasingly difficult as I felt my energy drain. Tobias and another soon came up, pulling me back from my arms. Their jaws were tense, as was mine as we pulled my body back.
The weight loosened greatly and despite our energy being drained, the excitement began rising at the sight before us. A mermaid, in the flesh.
Chestnut brown waves framed her beautiful face that radiated complete hatred. Her breaths were quick and short but she did manage one thing out. “Bloody pirates..”
Charming, Jaron thought, resisting the urge to laugh at the comment as if he hadn’t heard it countless times. Her eyes fell onto his, then the sailor beside him and finally Tobias. Her eyes lingered on him most before they returned to Jaron’s. The hatred, no less intense than before.
She lunged with a screech but didn’t make it far when a net was tossed over her courtesy of Roden. The scene appeared so similar to an insect getting caught in a web.  “Get her a fishbowl. Now.”  He said nonchalantly. Roden dragged her away below deck with the help of a few others. Tobias followed behind right after. The rest of the mermaids were nowhere to be found once that one was pulled up.
Jaron let out a sigh as he leaned against the edge. The rest of the crew ushered to their quarters, he stood alone staring into the brightness of the moon. It’s luminous light filled him with warmth, reminding him of his mother’s smile. This was all for her.. Once he got her the cure she’d accept him home again. Maybe, just maybe.
He was snapped out of his daze when a pair of hands spun him around followed by a sharp dagger held against his throat. His eyes met a pair of soft but intense hazel brown ones. “Where is she?”
Her voice was dangerously low but threatening regardless. “Well, if you’re looking for a female. We don’t stock many but there is a replacement by the name of Tobias.” The dagger was pushed ever so slightly harder causing Jaron to wince. No, don’t let her win, he repeated in his mind. “Where is my sister? I saw her get taken from this ship and I’ll kill every single of you if that’s what it takes to get her back.”
Jaron was taken aback. He was, dare he say, impressed. The way she spoke of her reminded him so much of how he’d protect Tobias and Roden. His brothers, not by blood but that didn’t make it any less strong of a bond to him. His eyebrows knit in confusion at a sudden realization.
“So if you’re related to that ladyfish then where is your fishy part?” He raised an eyebrow, half-hoping that the question would distract her for a second to release her grip. To his dismay, no change. Her eyes remained hard and unconcerned. “I was born of man and mermaid, that’s how I can shift. Now tell me where my sister is before I slit your throat.”
“Wait, that’s possible? Does the rest of the pod know? How were you accepted if you’re a mutant?” He needed to waste time. There was something in him that knew she’d bluff.. He couldn’t explain how he knew, he just did. Or maybe the sea salt was just leaking into his brain causing his braincells to mush. “I don’t answer any questions to a person of cold heart that attacks my family.”
“Your pod attacked first! If anyone is of cold heart, it’s you.” Her lips that were previously pressed into a thin line fell into a frown as her grip faltered. This was it. He quickly grabbed her wrist tightly winding it behind her back and doing the same with the other. The dagger fell, hitting a wood plank a few feet away. She stumbled back slightly towards the wall. He’s got the advantage now. “Ok, that was all fun and games but it’s my turn to get some answers.”
She huffed as she tried to manuevar out of his grip. “Yeah, no luck. It’s not a nice feeling, I can understand.” He had a smug grin resting on his lips. “Alright, now tell me what you did to my crewmates and I might release you scar-free.”
“I already said that I don’t answer to people of cold heart and that I’m not going anywhere without my sister.” She sneered, leaning in dangerously close. Their noses brushed ever so slightly. “Fine then, don’t go anywhere. You’ll stay with her.”
He called for a crewmate but no response. He tried again with Roden and Tobias. No response.
His angered gaze fell to her’s. “What did you do to them?”
“Find out for yourself.” Her eyes remained serious but there was a glimmer of humor in them, hidden deep inside. I released from our position and began making my way below deck, pulling along the somewhat charming yet dangerous girl. His jaw dropped at seeing every single one of his men, asleep. Soft snores came every so often from a few of them. He felt a rush of relief flow inside him. He’d seen enough death for tonight. He regained his composure before turning to the girl. “How did you manage to make them fall asleep? How did you even manage to sneak aboard?”
“I used a seaweed rope to climb once I saw that all of them went down to their quarters.. Well at least, I assumed all. When I snuck by, I used enchanted coral dust and they all went out like a light.” Her voice said softly as though they’d wake up if her voice was loud. Jaron despite not being the most intellectual, did a bit of research before his hunt and fell upon the topic of coral dust in one of Tobias’ books. He read that inhaling a whiff could cause one to sleep for days.
Jaron glanced over at her. She radiated peace when not angered, it was almost pleasant to view but then he noticed the moonlight glittering in through the windows. His mother. This was for her. He grabbed an old rope that rested along the floor with no particular use and tied her hands behind her back. “I’d apologize but that would require regret… which I don’t have.”
Her eyes immediately jerked to his, there was a mix of pity and sadness but hatred shined brightest of all. He almost felt a tinge of guilt. Almost.. Maybe he did.
A/N: There it is! Lemme know your thoughts, fav parts?? I dunno what else to say besides, hope you liked it haha <333
