I haven't read this series, but this is for my little sister's birthday (it's her favorite series/character). I hope it's accurate...

Another meme that I'm hoping no one has already done again:
Mott: If you took a shot for every time you made a bad decision, how drunk would you be? Imogen: A little tipsy Tobias: Drunk Roden: Wasted Jaron: Dead

"average person fakes their death 3 times a year" factoid actualy just statistical error. average person fakes their death 0 times per year. Jaron Eckbert, who thinks faking his death will solve every problem & fakes his death over 193479 times each year, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

Jumping on the Ascendance bandwagon because I remembered I’m actually apart of the fandom. Also, spoilers, duh.
let’s talk about king Eckbert.
I don’t think anyone has really mentioned him, or talked about why he’s such a good character. And now I’m here with the love.
ECKBERT IS JUST AN OLDER JARON!
Think about it. He had sensed danger in the castle, and instead of being a normal person and bringing his son back, he found him, and gave him a rock. And knowing his son so well, he put the idea in his head it was gold. And he knew this would work, because he loved his son. He knew Jaron wouldn’t let anything go once it was in his head. And this little goblin used that. He set it all up just in case he died. And when he did, Jaron had proof he didn’t even know he had.
Not only that, but it was very clear in the books that he loved both his sons dearly. He loved Darius so much, that everyone knew he was his boy. No one ever even questioned where he came from, because Eckbert loved him so much. He wasn’t denied a kingship because he was adopted. He happily accepted a baby into his life and heart.
He also adored his wife, so browny points. Not only that, but like Jaron, he literally dressed up like a peasant and just did his thing? Dude went out to be a little bard man and came back with a wife? How can you not love that?!
Also, what parent wouldn’t yell at their kid for theft or burning a tapestry? I’d be grounding my kids too!
We have a very bias opinion on Eckbert, because Jaron tells it that way. He’s known for grudges, he’s known for shining himself in a brighter light. And he’s known for loving his father despite it all.
Jaron may have had Erin’s eyes, and her big heart. But he is 100% his father’s son, mind and soul.
And if anyone needs any more reasons to love him, I have a whole separate rant I can do.

I'm reading book 3 of the ascendance series and I cannot take Jaron seriously. I just finished chapter 10 and like he's in enemy territory and he's all like "wow I really want to kiss Imogen and brush her hair through my fingers." BITCH you need to be worrying about not DYING.
Like maybe it's because I'm ace but I cannot handle one more instance of him going "you need to stay away from me Imogen it's too dangerous" and then the next chapter she's kidnapped and is used against him anyway even though she was sent away. At this point keep her close with guards.
Tobias never gets in these situations I wonder why? Maybe it's because he's at the castle with VIGILS.
Also, I don't think she's died even though she just got shot, it's too early in the book but if she does I might celebrate. Don't get me wrong I actually like her, but I just don't like reading romance. Like I did not think they were going to be romantic at all.
Like I got blindsided when in book 2 Jaron was like "I can't be in love with her I need to marry Amarinda for the good of Carthya." Not that it meant anything since he said she could marry whomever she liked anyways lol.
Also, he's kind of dumb like when he made Roden Captain of the Guard and one of the soldiers was like "you can't expect us to trust him as you do" and in his inner monologue he's like "Yeah lol I kind of did" Like dumbass he literally tried to kill you a few months ago. Sure, he didn't think he could have actually killed you, but THEY don't know that. He was literally working for the enemy. You cannot expect them to just forget that lol. YOUR THE KING.
Also, he keeps going on missions like by himself instead of sending someone else, and the one time he does send someone else to do that (so far) it's a trap. I do not think he will learn any useful lesson in this besides that if he want's something done, he should do it himself. Like no. Maybe don't send some of your most trusted confidants into enemy territory. Like I know it's because he didn't trust anyone else besides Mott to be able to rescue Imogen but still.

I think the reason Jaron lost all of his character development in the 4th book was because of erick's death. Sure they weren't so close and jaron, being the unreliable narrator he is, didn't express that he was sad, but it obviously effected him.
whenever a loved one of his dies, he relapses into thinking he's all alone. It happened with his parents and erick. I'm gonna add onto this post after reading the 5th book because ik Kerwyn dies too.
Erick's death had jaron once again not trusting anyone because he didnt want anyone to die, which is actually really sad. He trusted erick to handle things and boom, istantly he's out like a light. It didn't help that wilta was also lying and trying to earn his trust either.
