The local people we’ve been with so far tell us that the rains have come, so we expect very variable weather days wherever we are. Rain is crucial for food, so we are glad for them when it rains. But we are quietly a bit pleased for us when we have a sunny day!

Today dawned bright gold and blue. We set off after breakfast for a very happy brisk walk around the locality. As always there were lots of folk about, many in churches – you hear the singing and preaching from afar – and many walking purposefully here and there. They are always rather mystified by our propensity to “just walk”. ‘Yes, but where are you going?’

Taking the cows for a walk

We saw plenty of children playing and laughing, (often at us, funny white people), which is one of the signs that there may be more joy around than last year which held such a depressed mood following covid.

Simply walking down the dirt road you can learn a lot about everyday life here. Today all the washing is out on the lines in front of the shops and houses – well, the sun is shining. No one has a washing machine, never mind a drier. You will also see the women bending and stretching to do their washing and rinsing in a big bowl on the ground.

Incidentally you also see the boda-boda drivers washing their motor cycle taxis in the streams. When there is water, of course. Drought has far-reaching effects in many ways.

Crops for food grow in little family ‘gardens’, like our allotments. Bananas are important because cooking bananas are the main staple in most of Uganda. They are boiled and mashed to end up as “matoke”, like mashed potatoes though more yellowish than creamy white. With the matoke you might eat groundnut sauce and greens, a bit like spinach. Or if the crops have failed because of drought, you might have nothing.

In a universe where no one's allowed to age, why are the modern Jessie and James so withered and decrepit?

Dragon Ball has been on for more than three decades. Its stars were permitted to grow up, because the head can cope with the opportunities this offers.

Yet Goku, Krillin, Bulma et al bear a greater similarity to their younger selves than these gurning invertebrates do to Team Rocket, wearing a papery approximation of their skin.

Akira Toriyama is actually concerned about his life's work, still coming up with interesting concepts, brand-new characters, and most importantly, values his audience by keeping to the established canon.

And what's that flaccid growth between his weary peepers? Is that meant to be fringe?

And why are her digits just as thick and oblong as his?

The great gaping pink cave looks like the end of Looney Tunes when Porky Pig pops up and stammers: "That's all folks!"
