Now, here's an interesting property. You get a mid-century time capsule home- untouched since 1950 - plus a whopping 104.69 acres of land that includes a completely deteriorated private airstrip, (more like a mini airport), and a large hangar with a rotting plane inside. It's in Bryson City, North Carolina, 5bds, 3.5ba, $3.995M.
Tumblr media
Looking at the home first, it has a classic MCM front door, and the popular pony wall planter (but this one's stone and the largest I've seen).
Tumblr media
The living room is quite long and has a nice stone fireplace. Interesting how it's flat against the wall and outlined with picture frame molding.
Tumblr media
This is a classic- a curved glass block wall. Woah, a lot steep stairs, though, and I don't like how they skimped on the railing posts.
Tumblr media
Nice large dining room.
Tumblr media
The kitchen is original- the cabinetry, linoleum on the floor, and look at the tiled walls.
Tumblr media
Plus, there's a nice sized corner for everyday dining that looks like a sunporch.
Tumblr media
Check it out. You don't normally see an original toilet still a'flushin'. All yellow plumbing fixtures with original gray tile.
Tumblr media
The primary bedroom is pretty big. Do you the love the little door that opens to a storage cubby?
Tumblr media
Huge finished basement rec room isn't used, but it has glass block windows and a big stone fireplace. There appears to be a ceiling leak issue, though.
Tumblr media
The patio is looking a little sad. Needs some sprucing up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 104.69 acre property is gigantic. Here's a little picnic area by a pond.
Tumblr media
You've got your own swamp, in case you want to have an alligator farm/petting zoo (the land is zoned for multi-use).
Tumblr media
Your own country lanes to stroll or ride a horse.
Tumblr media
The airstrip has potential for a drag racing strip. (The realty ad proposes other uses for the land like horses, a vintage auto dealership, but I'm proposing some cooler options.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at this deteriorated setup. They really let this property go to pot. There's an idea- this could be a pot growing dispensary. Plenty parking, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It would cost a ton of money to repave all of this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a lot of money, for a lot of land, that needs a lot of work.

Chapter Four
RE8 | Wintersberg | Romance, Slow Burn | Action, Sci-Fi
Sequel of Winters and the Beast, a Resident Evil: Village Story
Table Of Contents
Tumblr media
Karl barely recovered from the mental imagery that flooded his mind, as he yanked backward on a suddenly-heavy object.  Eva could find and harness whatever one would call beings like Ethan when they were lost inside the mold’s strata.  His magnetic field amplified the strength of her powers, but the credit all went to her.  They’d caught a Winters.
Ethan needed a goddamn leash and collar, but this combined-effort wrangling would have to do for now.  Upon touching the familiar neck, wrapping his arm quickly around it as it appeared and jerking backward with his entire force, including the magnetic field, Heisenberg’s mind was flooded with…a something.  It was more than a memory or a visual, because he could actually smell, hear, sense …things.
Ethan, in bed with Miranda.
The field dropped abruptly.
When the blond found his footing, Karl managed-as he always did-to change gears quickly and aggressively, ranting to the man about his recklessness, going into the mold strata without Eva.  There was a hidden insult there; Karl felt as though Ethan trusted Eva more than he trusted Heisenberg to be alone with Rosemary.  They had already argued over this, Ethan’s defense that he simply wanted to learn independently, but it didn’t help the feelings of rejection.
Karl was still yelling when the pair turned away and strode toward the open dining room door.  Karl angrily kicked at a ceramic planter in the garden and stomped toward the tool shed.
----------------
Heisenberg left the domestication to those who were domesticated, and he instead spent the morning working on some of the larger equipment in the newly-constructed garage.  The mansion was built on the crest of a cliff, but the rolling hills that sloped away from it were prime real estate–they had once been used as servants’ quarters, stables, tea rooms and livestock barns along with who knew what other dumb shit.
So naturally all of that had been torn apart, a large plateau created, and on it built a large wooden warehouse structure that now held some of his beloved rusty companions.  He would never admit it to Ethan, but Karl preferred the covered wooden building to the pile of vehicles and parts that preceded it.  Ethan liked the building, which they all called the ‘garage’, because it looked better than the junk.
Karl liked it because it felt safe inside.  A big towering hangar over his head, walls around him.  It felt like home.
It was no factory, but it would do.
And though his anger earlier in the morning was palpable, and sincere, he couldn’t help but feel more flustered and agitated than anything while working on the array of vehicles.
The image was still burning into his consciousness as if it wanted a place there, and even though it felt like something he shouldn’t be watching–felt like invading someone else’s head-he nonetheless allowed the scene to play over and over again.
It had to be real.  It felt too real.
Miranda on the bed, her back to smooth silken sheets.  She was absolutely lost in ecstasy, moaning and making noises that Karl could have gone the rest of his very long life without hearing.  Whatever transferred from her mind was unreadable as human thought–it felt far more carnal, like Karl’s own…sensations.
Gross.
That wasn’t the reason he allowed it to keep invading his mind.
Ethan was on top of her, inside her.  Karl could likewise feel and sense all of the other man’s sensations, moans, spoken whispers.  Plenty of reason to hit repeat on that one.
But Ethan, in contrast to Miranda, had a stream of consciousness, even if most of it was wordless.  This was the part that made Karl feel as if he were trespassing.  With only the timid sound of the socket wrench ratcheting as he turned it, Karl could not drown out the thoughts from the memory.
Something’s not right.  So many arguments.  Fighting lately.  How do I fix this?
The emotions felt by Winters were palpable.  Love.  Fear.  Confusion.
Pretty much summed up the blond, really.  Not very sexy, to be thinking all that while fucking somebody, but Karl wasn’t surprised.  Ethan needed a bit of manhandling to forget his worries, which were many but had lessened as months went on.   Karl was happy to provide the manhandling, but as the engineer shook his head to rid his mind of the intrusive sensations, he recalled something else.
Shit, today was just all about memories.
He huffed and stood, deciding to cross the backyard gardens where another tool shed awaited him.  Maybe the fresh air and walk would do him good.

January
Miranda’s Lab
“I know why Alcina requests the mother, but we have more testing to do before I am ready to discard her.  I do not think I have time to find another surgeon, before I move next to bring the child.  How comfortable are you with a scalpel?”
Heisenberg’s greying eyebrows rose over his glasses.  He didn’t need them here.  It was a subterranean lab, after all.  But he hated this place so ferociously he needed the cover, or Miranda would see the bitter disgust and even fear in his eyes.
“On a…uh…live one?”  He shrugged.  “Ehhh?”
“I see,” she snapped, disappointed, and strode down the hallway toward the cell rows.  “Well, in that case, move her to my main laboratory.  The cell there is far more protected and isolated.  You will need to tend to her while I am away.”
Protected, from what?  It wasn’t like the American could do anything.  Miranda kept her sedated, and she’d had so much blood taken that she was woozy both times he’d laid eyes on her.  He nodded mutely when Miranda procured the keys and handed them to her ‘son.’
Heisenberg leaned against the far wall, not willing to make eye contact with the prisoner, who didn’t seem to notice him every time he’d tagged along here with Miranda.  He’d met her before, years ago.  But would she even remember him?
Miranda’s words to the captive were syrupy, sweet.  Not what he expected.  “Your husband is quite a man.”
Was that a taunt or a compliment?
The woman was on the cell bed, dark hair covering her face.
“Ethan? You have to leave him alone.  You have to–”
“He is in good hands,” Miranda answered, and then came the sinister chuckle.  Karl had more than an inkling of what she meant, and a stony expression crept across his face.  In a few more minutes, he would become more dissociated than the prisoner.
And what was it she’d said to him when they walked together toward Miranda’s lab?  Karl had to mostly carry her.
“Ethan cannot know.  It would destroy him to find out.  He can’t .  She won’t tell him, will she?”  It was a desperate woman’s babbling, nothing more, but Karl couldn’t help but to reassure her.
“He won’t find out,” he said simply, and she heaved a pained sigh.
Inwardly, Karl mused; of course he would, at some point.
Half the fun, for Miranda, was the GOTCHA at the end.  She would parade herself as a loved one, do the most intimate of intimate things, and then reveal.  She loved that part of the game.  Whatever idiot had married this American researcher, who Karl was beginning to believe was cursed–would find out at some point who he’d been sleeping with.
They all did, eventually.
—----------------
The memory of the meeting near Miranda’s lab only served to make Karl more angry at Miranda, but even that could not get the morning’s memory–vision, of Ethan, from his mind.
He had crossed the winding trails of the gardens that made up the rear of the estate, but Karl rubbed his forehead as he stood in the shade of the smaller tool shed.  He was covered in sweat, and he hadn’t even put on his coat or hat this morning.  The shade did little to help the perspiration or the intense, itchy, hot feeling all across his skin.
Maybe food would help.
Now wasn’t a good time for him to be around Ethan, though.  The repeated invasive memories were gnawing at his mind, and at other parts of him too.  Namely everything under his belt.  And while those feelings were probably rooted in something reasonable, he could almost sense the loss of control creeping back on him.
He’d just shocked the little fucker in his brain a few months ago, and it had taken a lot out of him.  More than it ever had, likely due to his own transformation and subsequent “death”.
Karl couldn’t reanimate the same way that Eva and Ethan were capable of, and he was stuck in this one goddamn body with this one motherfucking DNA-altered nematode as a compulsory companion.  And while most of the time he didn’t wish for his own reckless demise, he wished for it fervently every time these implanted, Miranda-esque urges manifested within him.
He was different from the others; most with cadou turned mindless.  Miranda had worked with the Lords, her own timely investment, to prevent this with them.  Implanted them herself, no less.  But it came with its own set of consequences.   None of the four were spared horrible side effects, though Karl knew he was far luckier than his siblings, all things considered.
It still sucked.
He smelled something fragrant; his mouth watered.  And there he was, goddammit, walking down the hill toward Karl with a sour expression on his handsome face.  He’d showered–Karl could smell the homemade soap on his skin.  He’d combed his hair into its neat little blond side part.  The scent of aftershave appeared not long after and Karl inhaled deeply.  He could even smell the scent of summer sun on the blond’s clothing and hair.
Ethan was staring at him, a trepidatious expression crossing over the scowl.  He was still mad, probably.  Mad that Karl had chewed him out this morning, mad that the engineer hadn’t been present at breakfast, probably mad about other stuff that Karl didn’t have a hope in hell to decipher.  But the intensity of Karl’s stare caused the blond to become cautious.
He was leering, Heisenberg realized, but couldn’t bring himself to stop.   It was twice as enchanting to see this absolute grouch of a creature bringing him food.  Something about it pleased Heisenberg.
Ethan was now in the doorway of the shed and he held out the plate and glass with as much apprehension as a child attempting to feed a bear.
Karl tore his gloves off and moved into Winters’ personal space, but kept his fingers flexed, working to process him without touch at first.  Better that way.
“Karl?”
The engineer stepped to Ethan’s side and inhaled by Winters’ neck.  All of the smells congregated here, seeming to be propelled into the air by the strong, warm pulse that sat under the pale skin.  He wanted to bite it, but…later.  Karl’s beard grazed the skin, but then he was inhaling again and moving around to Ethan’s other shoulder.
The scowl on Ethan’s face was replaced with an uncertain smile.  The taller man watched Heisenberg appear at his left shoulder and didn’t hesitate to make eye contact.  “You’re in a mood.”
“So I am.”
“You need to eat.”
That part was true.  Karl grabbed the toasted sandwich–he could smell eggs, some kind of grilled meat, melting cheese-and began to scarf it down.  He didn’t take the plate nor the drink, leaving Ethan to stare at him with an exasperated glare while he choked the food down.
It was delicious, but he barely tasted it.
Ethan’s smile was now completely gone as he handed out the glass of water.  Karl began gulping, and Ethan sat the plate on a nearby table so that he could cross his arms over his chest.
“You know, if you’d actually condescend to come and eat regular meals, you–”
Karl was done with the water, and the glass had crashed to the ground before he realized it.  He sighed, hoping that the sensation of being full would hit his body soon, cause him to slow down.  Cause him to be…not this way.
“--Are you okay?”  Ethan was dense, but he was also intuitive, at least when it came to Karl.  Well, sometimes.  He was getting better.
The engineer sighed and fished around his hips.  No such luck at feeling immediately satiated.  Maybe a cigar while he waited.  His fingers danced through the multiple pockets.
“Ahh…uh. I.”  Karl couldn’t lie to the other man.  He risked a glance, seeing the familiar crossed arms and that soft pout that always begged for a kiss.  He blinked rapidly, finding a lighter at least.
“I accidentally uh… got in your head when I pulled you out,” he said finally, in a flatter tone than his usual cadence.  “Goddammit, where the hell.”
Ethan tensed.  His arms uncrossed.  “What….what did you see?”
“You an….uhhhh….”
Ethan’s hazel eyes widened.  “Mia?  In bed?”
Karl’s dance through all of his pockets ceased entirely.  He blinked and paused.  Not Mia.
Ethan’s frown came back as if his face were awaiting it.  “What do you mean, not Mia?”
“I didn’t say that,” Karl snapped, but now Ethan glared, and snapped back just as quickly, “What do you MEAN, not Mia?”
“What do you think,” Karl growled, his lips pulling back over his teeth, old scar stinging as he tested its limits, then bit down as if to stop himself from talking more.  He didn’t want to say more.  He bit so hard that his lip threatened to bleed.  But if he focused on that, he wouldn’t think things that Ethan could hear.
Ethan’s angry stare moved to something else.  Contemplative.  Worried.  His eyes lost their intensity and he glanced at the ground, before he exhaled deeply.  “I can’t deal with this today.  Your…spy….will be here in an hour.  I’ve got to finish…”
“My spy?” The tone said, let’s fight, Winters.
Ethan’s reply was cold.  “I told you I can’t deal with this, Heisenberg.”
Karl’s snarl turned into a sneer.  “Oh come on,” he challenged, with a toss of his hair.  “Let me give you somethin’ you wanna deal with.”
The blond’s eyebrows raised, and by the reddening of his cheeks, Karl surmised that he was considering it.  But he stuttered out a response that indicated his intent to stay angry.
“You-you’re! Acting this way because you....  I get it was an accident.  But you saw.  Me. Uh.  You saw me being intimate and–WILL YOU STOP SMILING AT ME LIKE THAT?”
Karl stretched his shoulders, shaking out the mane.
“Karl, no!  We don’t have the time.  For this, for any of this.  I–”
“I’ll be quick then.”
Ethan made an annoyed sound.
“How about a….three second head start?”
Ethan’s nostrils flared, and his blush deepened as he backed away, holding up a finger.  “Dammit, I said no!”
“Five then.”
“Karl!”
“One!”
“You fucking asshole!”
“Two!”
Ethan’s backing steps turned into a stumble, and he spun on his heel to disappear into the gardens.  Karl’s giggle-turned-loud-laugh was through a wide grin.
After the laugh, he called one more word over the tall grass.
“Five!”

n the dining room might be a series of flickering candles and stockings full of candy hanging on the walls. Outside, the men would gather around barrels of cider or whiskey, celebrating their week off, while the women would prepare a turkey dinner. After eating the food and drinking the liquor, the men and women would find their partners and dance to the cheerful tunes of banjoes and fiddles. Christmas cheer was especially important for these people, for they were slaves on a large southern plantation, and this would be one of the only days when they were free to celebrate as a community of families.
Yet beneath the drinks, dancing, and decorations was a darker side to the holiday. Both slaves and slave owners manipulated the Christmas holiday in their constant struggle for freedom or power. The former used Christmas to assert their basic humanity, while the latter twisted holiday traditions to prevent slave rebellion.
One of the most scathing critiques of Christmas in bondage comes from the narrative of black leader and former slave Frederick Douglass. In his narrative, Douglass wrote that Christmas was nothing more than a tool for oppression.
From what I know of the effect of these holidays upon the slave, I believe them to be among the most effective means in the hands of the slaveholder in keeping down the spirit of insurrection. Were the slaveholders to abandon this practice, I have not the slightest doubt it would lead to an immediate insurrection among the slaves. These holidays serve as conductors, or safety-valves, to carry off the rebellious spirit of enslaved humanity.
Douglass argued that plantation owners used the holiday season and the weeklong break from hard labor to stifle slave rebellion. Douglass, born into slavery in 1818, came of age in a slave system wealthy planters had perfected. They knew how to mold nearly every small interaction and grand institution to serve their interests. Christmas would have been no different.
As Douglass recalled, the temporary respite from hard labor allowed slaves to tolerate their condition. Masters also used the holiday more directly, encouraging slaves to binge drink hard liquor: “One plan is, to make bets on their slaves, as to who can drink the most whiskey without getting drunk; and in this way they succeed in getting whole multitudes to drink to excess.” Binge drinking not only asserted the dominance of the slave owner, but according to Douglass, it also made working in the fields more attractive: “We felt, and very properly too, that we had almost as well be slaves to man as to rum. So, when the holidays ended, we staggered up from the filth of our wallowing, took a long breath, and marched to the field,–feeling, on the whole, rather glad to go.”
Masters relied on Christmas as a way of fracturing slave solidarity. As Christmas approached, they threatened to withhold gifts or even cancel Christmas completely. This system of holiday-based reward and punishment encouraged obedience, productivity, and disunity. Slave owners also waited until the holidays to dismantle families and sell slaves. The news that a son, daughter, or spouse was to be sold away often prompted heartbreaking acts of violence, including suicide and self-mutilation, and slave owners believed that the jovial holiday spirit could smooth the process.
Yet the slave experience during Christmas is more complex than Douglass might lead us to believe. Masters might use the holiday to reinforce their control, but slaves used Christmas in their physical, psychological, and cultural resistance to slavery.
On the most basic level, Christmas allowed slaves to endure the rigors of slavery. Even Douglass mentioned that Christmas meant gifts of food and clothes. Slaves took advantage of the free time, tending to their gardens, hunting for wild game, and crafting items for trade. Slaves also embraced Christmas for its psychological benefits. They travelled to neighboring plantations to visit friends and family, sometimes taking advantage of the lax rules of the season to stay away for weeks. As large groups came together, slaves celebrated through song and dance. These dances became a means of creating and preserving African-American culture.
Most important, slaves saw these small moments of community and joy as a demonstration of their humanity. Harriet Jones, a woman born into slavery in 1844, discussed Christmas in her memoirs. She recalled that her master helped lead the Christmas dances, calling to his slaves to swing their partners. Jones relished the opportunity to dance intimately and openly with her significant other, remembering how passionately the various couples danced. It is unclear what the observing owners thought, but many slaves saw these Christmas dances as a chance to display their romantic love in a society that otherwise disregarded and disparaged it. During the dances, men wore clean shirts and women placed ribbons in their hair. Central to the preparation was the act of removing, literally and symbolically, the confining field shoes, as the shoes were notoriously bad for dancing.
How do we reconcile Douglass’s memories with these acts of resistance? Perhaps the two accounts are not as antithetical as they seem. Christmas was an effective means of control precisely because it allowed for greater displays of resistance on one designated week a year. Ironically, occasionally affording slaves rest and freedom helped slave owners to maintain power.

Crazy Stories From Charleston's Past in South Carolina
Tumblr media
Charleston is a city with a rich history, and there are many interesting stories from its past. Some of these are famous tales that everyone knows about, but some are lesser-known facts that few people know about. These stories showcase what makes Charleston such an incredible place.
A pirate who terrorized Charleston’s waters is buried in the churchyard of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.
Five miles south of Charleston, you'll find the churchyard of St. Philip's Episcopal Church. It's a peaceful place, with a wooden gazebo overlooking the harbor and mangroves growing along its edges. But there's one grave that stands out from all others: that of Captain Edward Teach (AKA "Blackbeard").
Teach terrorized Charleston in 1718 by leading two ships into their waters, capturing several merchant ships before escaping through the harbor entrance after a battle with colonial forces led by Governor Charles Eden and Colonel William Rhett Jr. To commemorate this event and honor its heroes, Charles Towne Cemetery was established in 1750 on land purchased from local planters Isaac Motte and John Wragg; it was later renamed Magnolia Cemetery when it was moved northward into town sometime after the 1820s due to expansion demands from growing population numbers throughout South Carolina during this time period."
Slave rebellion scared Charlestonians.
The most famous slave rebellion in Charleston's history is the one led by Denmark Vesey, who was a free man of color. It was planned to take place on Bastille Day, July 14, 1822. The plan involved mass murder and arson that would have destroyed much of Charleston--but luckily for us all it was foiled by the betrayal of a slave named Tom who told his owner about it!
A tidal wave rolled over Charleston in June 1886.
In June 1886, a tidal wave rolled over Charleston.
The cause was a storm that hit the coast of South Carolina on June 22 and 23, 1886. It brought with it heavy rain and winds up to 90 miles per hour--and an unusual phenomenon: the city experienced two high tides during one day.
The effect on Charleston was devastating; thousands of buildings were destroyed by flooding and many more were damaged by wind or fire after being struck by lightning bolts from the storm's fierce winds. Around 25 people lost their lives during this natural disaster as well.*
How did they discover what caused this tidal wave? A scientific team set out to investigate what happened after receiving reports from witnesses who claimed they had seen waves several feet high coming ashore at nightfall when no storms were forecasted for days ahead (so there was no way any other cause could have been responsible). They found evidence showing how large amounts of water had flowed back into Charleston Harbor due "to some obstruction which prevented its escape through its normal channels."
No one knows who paid for the construction of the Washington Monument in Marion Square.
The Washington Monument is a monument to George Washington, the first president of the United States. It's located in Marion Square, which is located in downtown Charleston.
It was built in 1856 and designed by Robert Mills. No one knows who paid for it, though some speculate that it was paid for by the people of Charleston as a thank-you to General Washington for his service during The Revolutionary War when he helped them win their freedom from England.
Mold Removal Company in Charleston, West Virginia

A fire that started on a small island off Charleston brought the city to a standstill for several days in the mid-1800s.
Tumblr media
In the mid-1800s, a fire started on Sullivan's Island and spread to other islands in Charleston Harbor. The fire caused great damage to the city and was finally extinguished after several days.
The cause of this massive blaze? Lightning!
Pirates used false lights to trick ships into running aground near Sullivan’s Island.
In the 17th century, pirates used false lights to trick ships into running aground. The ships were then looted and their crew's taken, prisoner.
Sullivan's Island was one of the most popular places for this practice because it had a shallow sandbar that allowed easy access from land, but could still be hidden from view by tall trees on either side of it.
Charleston has many interesting stories from its past
Tumblr media
The city has many interesting stories from its past. Some of them are about pirates, slave rebellions, and tidal waves. Others show how the city has changed over time. These stories are not just for tourists; they can help you understand Charleston better as well!
In 1676, pirates attacked Charles Towne (the name Charleston was given when it became a British colony). They destroyed houses and ships belonging to settlers who were trying to make their lives here in this new land called South Carolina. It wasn't until 1718 that another attack occurred--this time by Spanish soldiers from St Augustine Florida who wanted revenge against England because King George had defeated them at sea earlier that year during the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714).
Charleston is a place with a rich history, and these stories are just a few examples of the many adventures that have taken place in this city. If you're looking for more information about these events or others from Charleston's past, be sure to check out our website!

Transform Your Space with Artificial Plants in Saudi Arabia

Your New Place
Part Three
Thrifting
Heading to the thrift store, charity shop, or rummage sale is probably one of the first things you think of when you get a new place. Here's what to focus on when you get started...
Lamp
Improving your lighting might be the #1 best thing you can do for your room. Even if you have an overhead light, you will want a smaller lamp by your bed to help you wind down at night, or in case you need to get up in the dark. Sure you can use your phone for navigating in the dark, but a bedside lamp is kinder to your eyes and more cozy. Don't worry if the lamp or lampshade isn't exactly your style. Get something that works and is a good size for your space. You can diy some changes to the aesthetics later.
Wastebasket
You need somewhere to put rubbish, and you don't have to use a boring plastic bin from Walmart. The thrift store is often a great place to find something to use as a wastebasket. I've found some really fun options at thrift stores including planters, large popcorn tins, buckets, baskets, crocks, etc.
Sheets/curtains
Basically, you need fabric. It doesn't matter what it's original purpose was, you just need fabric in a color or pattern that you like. If you get a big flat sheet, you can use it for curtains, maybe make a pillow case, and cover a cushion for the floor or a chair. You can hang it from the ceiling as a room divider. You can use it to cover cardboard boxes to make attractive little storage containers. You can decoupage it onto furniture or jars. Rag rugs aren't terribly difficult to make and you can use any fabric cut into long strips. The possibilities are endless.
Milk crates
Milk crates are one of the most versatile things for a new place, if you can get your hands on some. You can use them as bookshelves, shoe shelves, a nightstand, a little table or desk, put a cushion on top and it becomes a seat or footstool. There are some really fancy things you can do with milk crates, but even without doing anything to them, they're darn useful.

Other things to look for :
Shoe shelves

Rolling storage carts

Over the door hooks and shelves

If you don't have a closet, try to get your hands on one of these:

A couple notes on thrifting soft items such as pillows, cushions, stuffed animals, rugs, upholstered furniture, etc.
If bedbugs, lice, or fleas are a big problem in your area, thrift stores might not even stock soft items at all.
If that's less of a concern in your area, proceed with caution. Check for unwanted stains or smells (mold, smoke, pet smells, etc) before you buy. Don't assume you can get rid of a bad smell or stain.
If the item can safely be washed and dried in the big machines at the laundromat, do that.

HOW TO SAFELY LIVE IN YOUR LOS ANGELES HOME DURING A MAJOR RENOVATION PROJECT
Tumblr media
Ok, the contract for your LA Home Renovation project is signed…and your General Contractor is ready to begin. That means the plans are in place and you have made the decision to weather the dust storms, the noise, and experience living in your home during the stages of your upcoming renovation project. You will need to know what to expect, how you can keep your family safe, and stay sane through it all!
DAY ONE – HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO CONSIDER FOR RENOVATION SAFETY:
The demolition phase is the messiest and most chaotic step in your renovation. It may look fun and exciting on your favorite HGTV show but trust us when we say, “plan to be out of the house until the demolition is complete and the area being renovated is sealed off.”
NEW FAMILY SAFETY RULES:
No one goes barefoot in the construction site
Tools are not toys
The more you can stay out of the way the faster your general contractor & crew can work
Sleeping in late will be put on pause until you’re on the flip side of your remodeling project.
HOW TO SAFELY LIVE IN YOUR LOS ANGELES HOME DURING A KITCHEN RENOVATION
Plan ahead and set up a second kitchen site. Luckily, living in Los Angeles you can cook outside most of the year. If you are concerned about the weather, choosing the summertime for your home renovation could be really helpful. Use your old cabinets to create a pantry and store your dishes. Move your microwave and refrigerator to a convenient location nearest the outdoor grill or camping stove. Great time to pull out the instant pot and air fryer you received as gifts last holiday season. Set up a folding table as your prep area and you will be good to go. If you have a utility sink in the garage for washing dishes and pots …. great! If not, purchase a large metal tub to get the job done. You can always use it as a planter later to grow your own veggies. Stock up on paper plates. It’s not the “greenest” solution…. but sometimes you must go with a practical alternative. This is a great time to get each family member a new water bottle. Be gentle with yourself. There are some great healthy, pre-made microwavable meal options that will simplify your life. Time to reinstate a weekly Pizza Night! Have everything emptied out and packed away before your LA Renovation Team arrives. Great time to get rid of the items in the back of the cabinets that are just taking up space. Don’t forget to pack up your good dishes and crystal glassware. Even if they are stored in the dining room the hammering and vibrations from the renovation can endanger delicate items. Better to be safe than sorry.
HOW TO SAFELY LIVE IN YOUR LOS ANGELES HOME DURING A BATHROOM RENOVATION
We suggest, you proceed with one-bathroom renovation at a time, so patience is your friend! All the above rules apply when it comes to your safety. Please remember to completely remove your items from the bathroom before the renovation demo team arrives. Set up family rules for sharing the second bathroom. Even though your contractor will clean up at the end of the day, in Los Angeles, you should be prepared for extra dust. Bathroom renovations can be thrown off schedule if mold is discovered during the demolition. This is common in older Los Angeles homes. This could add a week or more to your timeline. That’s where your patience will be tested.
THE POSITIVES ABOUT CHOOSING TO STAY IN YOUR HOME WHILE RENOVATING:
You are available to make quick decisions on materials and design options
You can easily check on the progress
You are around for any necessary troubleshooting when unexpected problems show up
You will save money on AirBnB or hotel stays
You won’t have to move in with your In-Laws…which for some people this will be a blessing.
With a little pre-planning, you can stay safely in your home while your Contractor manages a professional renovation project to create the home of your dreams!

The Double Entendres of Dean Armitage
When I rewatched Get Out for this class, I was taken aback by how every single piece of dialogue built up to the climax of the Armitage kidnapping and brainwashing ring. Of course on my first watch, being unaware of this reveal, I didn’t pick up on many of these lines. So, in this blog post I want to specifically analyze the double entendres said by Dean Armitage.
The first example of this dialogue is when Dean relishes in the killing of the deer in Rose and Chris’ car accident: “one down, a couple hundred thousand to go… I do not like the
deer, I’m sick of it. They’re taking over. They’re like rats. They’re destroying the ecosystem. I see a dead deer on the side of the road, I think to myself, that’s a start.” Here, Dean expresses his disdain for black people thinly veiled through the symbol of a deer. He clearly believes that the American black population, which exists as a result of white people forcibly bringing people from Africa to enslave and terrorize, is too large and has grown too powerful. When he says “they’re destroying the ecosystem,” he is not talking about the environmental system but rather the order of society. Dean celebrates the murder of black people as “a start” of restoring the white supremacy of the antebellum period and denounces the relative freedom of contemporary black people. Rose and Missy’s reactions both show that they see through the deer substitution while Chris awkwardly smiles, unaware of the true meaning of this tirade.
Dean then describes himself as a traveler who “[keeps] bringing souvenirs back.” Knowing the true business of the Armistads, these souvenirs likely include human bodies. He then shows Chris his father’s portrait, describing his father’s loss to Jesse Owens, “Hitler’s up there with all of his perfect Aryan race bullshit.” To Chris this may seem like Dean attempting to validate the equality of black people, but in reality, this is Dean plotting to exploit black bodies for their mythologized athletic superiority.
The pair then move to the kitchen. As they pass the basement Dean states: “we had to seal it up. Some black mold down there.” Here, Dean again uses a symbol as a stand in for black people. This statement reaffirms his belief that the black population is too numerous, and by comparing black people to mold he also reiterates the belief that black people reproduce too much and too quickly. This basement of course is used for the brain transplant procedure, which again shows that he regards the black captives as a hazardous infestation. When they reach the kitchen, Dean states: “my mother loved her kitchen, so we keep a piece of her in here.” The camera then pans to Georgina, marking an immediate tone shift. The “piece of her” is of course her brain which has been transplanted in a black body, effectively colonizing it. Georgina is immediately off, she does not speak or carry herself like a black woman.
When the pair exit to view the backyard, they see the black groundskeeper. Dean states: “I know what you’re thinking… white family, black servants… we hired Georgina and Walter to help care for my parents. When they died, I couldn’t bear to let them go… But boy, I hate the way it looks.” Dean attempts to make Christ comfortable with the fact that the Armistads are a “white family” with “black servants.” The camera capturing the massive mansion only reinforces the image of a white planter family exploiting the labor of black “servants.” Knowing the outcome of this movie, the “hiring” of Georgina and Walter was kidnapping, and the “care” provided by them is simply the use of their bodies as vessels to hold the white consciences. When Dean describes how after his parents died he “couldn’t bear to let them go,” Chris surely believes the family had formed a connection with their workers. On the contrary, Dean is describing how he could not bear to let his parents’ end with their natural life, and artificially extended their lives by exploiting black bodies. He concludes by stating that he “[hates] the way it looks.” To Chris, it seems like Dean is expressing an awareness of the history of black laborers benefitting white families while in reality, Dean is actually expressing the disdain for his parents inhabiting black bodies.
When Jeremy recalls the story of Rose biting a boy’s tongue in highschool, Dean tells Chris: “you better be careful.” Dean masks this threat as a joke. When Jeremey fixates on MMA, Dean sniffles, which seems to be some kind of signal. Through this doublespeak, Dean simultaneously attempts to make Chris feel comfortable while he expresses his disdain for black people. This concept can be applied to the way white liberals and corporations performatively attempt to express solidarity with black people while often repackaging racist rhetoric in the process.
