Concrete Blocks - Manufacturing, Classification & Uses
Concrete blocks are nowadays replacing bricks in masonry construction, notably in many multi-storeyed buildings. They are available in three types namely solid, hollow and cellular, widely used for the construction of filler walls and boundary walls in RC framework.
Concrete blocks are usually made in large sizes to make blockwork faster and consume less cement in joints than the brickwork. If the percentage of the voids is more than 25%, then they are hollow blocks and blocks with voids less than 25% are only perforated blocks.
The cellular concrete blocks are generally referred to as lightweight aerated concrete blocks. All these blocks are extensively used for compound walls and non-loadbearing walls.
Hollow blocks are specially made for loadbearing walls, which are useful in reducing a dead load of masonry in buildings. Blocks can also be with cement and sand called cement-sand blocks or with cement and soil called soil-cement blocks which are of low strength and use for low-cost construction.
Manufacturing of Concrete Blocks
BIS recommends a fineness modulus of the combined aggregate between 3.6 to 4 and coarse aggregates used are of size 6 to 12 mm. Lean mixes up to 1:8 are generally used. Concrete mix for concrete blocks should not be richer than one part of the cement to six parts of the volume of combined aggregate.
Tumblr media
Concrete blocks can be handmade and also machine-made. The cast block is then cured in a water tank or yard for at least 14 days (water need to be changed at least every 4 days).
After curing, the blocks are dried for 4 weeks before being used in masonry construction. They should be stacked with voids in the horizontal direction to facilitate easy drying, or they should be steam cured and dried.
The whole process allows the complete shrinkage of the block to take place they are laid on the wall, which is very important for strong walls.
Classification of Concrete Blocks
Hollow concrete blocks
Open and Closed cavity-type hollow concrete blocks are classified into three grades:
Grade A - They possess a minimum density of 1500 kg/m³ and are used for load-bearing walls.
Grade B - They have a density below 1500 kg/m¬³ and used for load-bearing walls.
Grade C - These blocks are used for non-load bearing walls and have density more than 1000 kg/m³.
All these blocks are available in decorative facings like fluted facing to provide artistic effects.
Tumblr media
Solid concrete blocks
They should be manufactured for specific concrete strength of 4.0 and 5.0 N/mm² in 28 days. These blocks are used as load-bearing walls and have a density of not less than 1800 kg/m³.
Tumblr media
Paver blocks
These blocks are solid concrete blocks of different shapes specially made for exterior ground paving on sidewalks, parking lots, driveways, petrol pumps, industrial floors, etc.
Tumblr media
AAC Blocks
AAC blocks refer as Autoclaved Aerated Concrete Blocks. These blocks are also termed as light-weight hollow blocks.
They are prepared as solid blocks from cement, water and materials like ground sand, pulverized fly ash together with additives to aerate and stabilize the air bubbles.
The final result is a mixture of thick liquid which is then poured into steel moulds to form large cakes. After some time, the mixture sets and ready to cut into a serious of individual blocks of required size using taut steel wires.
Tumblr media
Very light blocks for partition and moderate-weight blocks for light loadbearing walls can be obtained from aac blocks. These blocks do not shrink on drying as the material is obtained by autoclaving.
The autoclaved cement product is crystalline, which is different from the product obtained by normal wet curing or by ordinary steam curing.
Sizes and Tolerances
The nominal dimensions of concrete block as per BIS are as follows:
 Length - 600, 500, 450 or 400 mm
 Height - 100 or 200 mm
 Width - 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250 or 300 mm
Actual sizes will be less than 10 mm of mortar thickness. For Concrete and Hollow concrete blocks nominal length 390 mm and height 190 mm. The thickness for loadbearing walls is 190 mm, compound walls 140 mm and for filler walls 90 mm.
These dimensions can easily be achieved in machine-made blocks than handmade blocks. The width of blocks use for load-bearing walls is 200 mm and for parapet or filler walls is 100 mm.
Points to Remember:
The mortar strength should not be more than the strength of the blocks. With high mortar strength, cracks will be less and very large, but with low mortar strength, cracks will be small and distributed.
We should use only blocks that are cured properly for at least 14 days and dried for 4 weeks to avoid shrinkage during construction.
We should not wet the blocks while placing in masonry construction.
Tumblr media
Freshly-made and uncured concrete blocks should never be allowed on the work.
Blockwork, particularly ordinary cement sand blocks and soil-cement blocks should not be used as loadbearing walls for concrete slab roof which favours to expand and contract with temperature.
The maximum difference in sizes allowed is ±5 mm in length and ±3 mm in height and width.
They should be protected from rains while being stored as they absorb moisture by wetting and shrinking on drying.
The main disadvantage of concrete blocks is shrinkage due to the movement of moisture content which is not present in bricks. As these blocks are much larger than bricks, any foundation movement will cause blockwork to crack more than the brickwork.

A Good Brick
For all that they chant ‘stone and sky’ at the funeral ceremony and refer to the block as ‘Maarva’s stone’ it’s clear that her ashes were actually turned into a brick.
And there’s a pun to be found in that.
Stone:
Concreted earthy or mineral matter; rock.
Stone is formed through a combination of heat, pressure, and time deep inside the earth’s surface.
Brick:
A moulded rectangular block of clay baked by the sun or in a kiln until hard and used as a building and paving material.
A mixture of sand, cement, clay, fly ash, and other materials which are blended with water and then formed into blocks of the required size and shape before being baked until hard.
Brick (British slang):
A person who is good, trustworthy and reliable. A solid friend.
Used as in 'Thanks for helping me get all that work finished on time, you're a brick!'
It's older British slang, used in the 1930's-40's (it appeared in Enid Blyton’s ‘Famous Five’ and ‘Malory Towers’ books, although it may have been edited out of more recent editions to modernise them) and probably not used much outside of expensive privately paid for schools nowadays, if at all.
And I don’t know what they mix the ashes with to make them into such a hard and resilient brick, but Brasso really lays into people with it but it shows no sign of damage when we last catch sight of it.
They know how to make a good brick in Ferrix.
In more ways than one.

Hempcrete Finally Aproved by Building Code
More than three decades ago a radically new building material started gaining popularity - in Europe: The benefits of hempcrete (a.k.a. hemplime) include exceptional thermal performance, highly effective transmission of humidity, resistance to mould, and acoustic insulation. It is also fireproof, and sequesters more carbon than its industrial production requires. Given all these incredible benefits, it may sound surprising that until now hempcrete has been not been permitted in US building codes. This had to do with hemp being considered an illegal plant. With the legalization of cannabis for medical and even recreational use in many states, the US is finally ready to include hempcrete as a permitted material in its residential building codes.
Tumblr media
What is Hempcrete?
When separating the woody inner portion of the hemp stalk from the main fiber, we get what's called shives. They are also very fibrous, but unlike the main fiber, which is threaded into rope, shives are coarse, broken pieces. This material is what makes up the bulk of hempcrete. The other part is a limestone binder, using either hydrated or hydraulic lime. This is an industrial product, requiring the calcination of lime at very high temperatures in kilns, similar to the production of cement for concrete.
Tumblr media
After the hemp shives are mixed with the lime binder, and combined with the addition of water, the curing process starts. Depending on the type of binder, this could take up to a month. For this reason, the hempcrete is usually molded into blocks, similar to cinder blocks. In comparison, however, hempcrete tends to be lighter, and less brittle than concrete.
An Alternative to Concrete?
Before I continue comparing the characteristics of hempcrete to concrete, I want to get its most important drawback out of the way: Hempcrete has about 5% of the compressive strength of residential grade concrete. This means, it is never meant to be used as a structural material to bear great loads! However, excluding this main disadvantage, hempcrete outperforms concrete in so many other aspects, that it would be a waste dismissing this amazing material for its mere structural weakness.
Tumblr media
First of all, hempcrete is not only highly insulative, but it also has a good thermal mass. Normally these would be contradictory properties, since most other materials with plenty of thermal mass tend to be poor insulators, and vice versa. Hempcrete is a great exception to this rule, due to its efficient R value of between 0.67/cm (1.7/in) and 1.2/cm (3.0/in) and a specific heat capacity of between 1000 J/kg K to 1700 J/kg K. At the same time, hempcrete "breathes", meaning it is great at transmitting humidity, keeping the interior air dry, which creates a comfortable warm sensation.
Other beneficial attributes of hempcrete are that it is fireproof, resistant to moulds, and is highly effective at insulating against acoustic disturbances. Its most notable feature, however, has to do carbon sequestration, making it highly interesting for modern applications, as we are facing an overabundance of carbon in our atmosphere.
Tumblr media
Carbon-neutral... or Carbon-negative?
Even before it is turned into hempcrete, the hemp plant is already highly effective at taking up carbon from the atmosphere. At 15 tons of CO2 per hectare it does this much faster than any forest or commercial crop, while it is fast growing and doesn't require much care or delicate conditions. So growing hemp is already a great way to combat CO2, but hempcrete takes this carbon sequestration a step further.
In its natural cycle, the hemp plant stops taking up carbon once it dies. Sure, by that time it will likely have reproduced, and its offspring can continue the good work, but in the form of hempcrete even the dead hemp plant can continue this process thanks to the lime binder it is mixed with. Due to the carbonation process, the lime continues absorbing CO2, not only during its curing phase, but throughout its entire existence. The amount of this is estimated around -1.6 to -79 kg CO2e/m2.
Tumblr media
This means that even though the production of the lime binder involves a good amount of carbon emissions, it is all made up by the joint effects of growing hemp and converting it into hempcrete. So you could say that hempcrete is not only a carbon-neutral building material, but it is in fact carbon-negative, removing more carbon from the atmosphere than it has put into it.
Time to Start the Future?
Given its amazing properties, and time tested practicality in Europe, there are many ambitious projects related to hempcrete. One such proposed application are the Urban Sequoias, enormous high-rise buildings that are supposed to sequester 1,000 tons of CO2 per year, about the amount of 48,500 trees. Although no Urban Sequoia has been built so far, the technology is highly promising.
Tumblr media
Also, now that the United States has incorporated hempcrete as a permitted material in its 2024 International Residential Code, it can be expected that this it will find further appeal and acceptance among builders, architects, and engineers in far reaching applications.

In recent years, the construction industry has witnessed a significant evolution in materials and methodologies, one of which is the increasing popularity of mini concrete. Innovatively, this trend primarily focusing on small-scale applications, has emerged as an efficient solution for various projects, from residential construction to small infrastructure works. Let’s further discover the unique characteristics, advantages, applications, and future prospects of mini concrete, particularly in Australia.
Introducing Mini Concrete
Ideally, mini concrete, often referred to as lightweight concrete, is a form of concrete characterised by its reduced weight and volume. While traditional concrete typically involves a combination of sand, gravel, water, and cement, mini concrete integrates lightweight aggregates, such as expanded clay, pumice, or polystyrene beads, resulting in a product that maintains structural integrity while being significantly lighter. This type of concrete can be used in various applications where weight reduction is essential without compromising durability and strength.
Advantages of Mini Concrete
One of the most prominent advantages of mini concrete is its lightweight nature. This quality leads to several benefits, particularly in smaller construction projects or urban environments where heavy equipment may not easily access the site. The reduced weight means lower transportation costs, easier handling, and quicker installation times.
Additionally, mini concrete often boasts superior insulation properties due to the air pockets created by its lightweight aggregates. This feature contributes to energy efficiency, making buildings warmer in winter and cooler in summer, significantly reducing heating and cooling costs.
Furthermore, mini concrete is highly versatile, lending itself to various applications. Its flexibility in mixing allows for a broad range of uses, from decorative elements in landscaping to structural components in residential buildings. The material can be easily moulded into various shapes and sizes, making it ideal for custom projects.
And lastly, because mini concrete can be applied in thin layers, it requires less material overall. This advantage contributes to sustainability which is a core consideration in modern construction. Not only construction industry will benefit but the environment as well.
Applications of Mini Concrete
The applications of mini concrete are diverse and continue to expand as construction needs evolve, particularly in Australia. One of the most common uses is in residential construction, where it is employed for non-load-bearing walls, flooring systems, and decorative elements. The lightweight nature allows for innovative design choices, enabling homeowners and builders to create unique aesthetics without a significant increase in structural weight.
Additionally, mini concrete also finds significant applications in landscaping. The material's ease of manipulation allows for the crafting of garden features, pathways, and retaining walls that are not only functional but also visually appealing. The use of mini concrete in outdoor settings often incorporates a variety of finishes, including stamped, stained, or polished surfaces, catering to diverse aesthetic preferences.
Furthermore, mini concrete can also be applicable in precast applications. Prefabricated components, such as panels and blocks, can be manufactured off-site using mini concrete, allowing for quicker assembly on-site. This method is particularly attractive for urban development where time is often of the essence, and minimising disruption is a priority.
Visions of Mini Concrete
These days, research and development are ongoing to enhance its properties further, focusing on improving strength, durability, and environmental sustainability. Innovations in mixing technologies and the incorporation of recycled materials could position mini concrete as a leading choice in eco-friendly construction. As well, with the growing emphasis on sustainable building practices, mini concrete aligns well with regulatory trends aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of construction projects. Siding  Professional Power Washing Techniques for Outstanding Results
From fiber cement to cedar boards and composites – the right siding adds character and completes the architectural style of your home. Accumulating layers of dirt, mold and mildew hide natural beauty while posing deterioration threats for wood and other products.
Choose professional washing tailored for your exterior using these proper techniques for maximum clean effectiveness while protecting integrity:
Prep Work Essentials
Identify defects for priority care – repair popped nails, caulking gaps and seal penetrations where water intrudes risking interior damage
Inspect type – wood, vinyl, fibre cement, masonry to set pressure
Note delicate areas for light pressure – softwoods, architectural details
Mask off windows, vents, ornamentals
Proper Pressure Adjustment
Vinyl, fiber cement – medium 1200-2000 psi
Wood siding – low, <1200 psi
Brick, masonry – high 3000+ psi
Using powerful gas heating elements with pressure exceeding material limits risks permanent damage – deep cleaning fibre cement risks fracturing for example. It's critical to adjust for appropriate yet effective treatment.
Apply Wood Brighteners
Oxalic, phosphoric or sodium metasilicate aid in restoration
Loosen ageing grey wood fibres
Let set for 10-15 minutes before rinse
Wood naturally greys from water and sun exposure. Brighteners dissolve ageing cells to reveal new vibrant tones and grain underneath while stabilizing against further change.
However, using care not exceeding label concentration or letting set too long risks excess bleaching.
Difficult Stains
Pet urine – enzymes break down waste salts
Mold/mildew – sodium hypochlorite bleach cleaner
Oil Drips – phosphate-free detergent degreaser
Tough stains don't necessarily require maximum pressure if using the right chemical treatment. Applying at weaker pressure allows detergents longer working time.
Power Rinsing
Rinsing off cleaning solutions entirely after dwell times is critical to avoid residue accumulation degrading wood fibres or metal corrosion long term – diminishing integrity and appearance.
Utilize high 4+ gpm flow for the fastest contaminant removal
Adjust nozzle distance to prevent surface damage from pressure
Repeat coats on remaining buildup only after fully rinsed
Proper power rinse technique prevents marring while effectively restoring surfaces. It pays to be patient – using chemicals instead of excessive pressure to cut costs and limit replacement later.
Gutter and Drain Care Key for Home Protection
Gutters play an indispensable role in whisking rainwater off your roof and protecting fascia boards, siding and foundation from leaks. But they easily clog from debris short-circuiting proper drainage.
What may appear as merely a petty annoyance can turn ugly, leading to thousands in damage if neglected further:
Water intrusion behind gutters loosens fascia for detachment
Backed-up water seeps into wall voids soaking insulation
Overflowing gutters spill roof runoff around the foundation undermining the integrity
Don't underestimate the importance of cleaning gutters! Drain problems lead to exponentially bigger issues down the line.
Comprehensive Gutter and Drain Care
Versus periodic debris removal from the roof line, comprehensive care also involves:
Check the attachment – resecure any loose hangers
Remove baffle plugs – clear built-up slime clogging drain tubes
Wash debris – leaves, and needles off the exterior to limit cleaning frequency
Check and seal separated joints – prevent leakage
Confirm proper pitch and alignment – ensure designed water flow
Washing the exterior as well as interior makes a remarkable difference allowing unimpeded drainage while restoring appearance from stains at the same time.
Our services provide this complete care package bringing new life while avoiding water damage threats.

Revitalize Your House Today with Professional Power Washing
Maintaining your home's exterior with Professional Power Washing is critical for preserving curb appeal and protecting your valuable investment from the elements. Over time, siding and gutters inevitably collect dirt, grime and mould, dulling appearance while enabling deterioration and costly repairs if neglected. Power washing is an effective solution to restore your home's pristine look. Utilizing high-pressure water and cleaning agents, it cuts through stubborn buildup that brushes can't touch – revitalizing exteriors while extending lifespan by halting mold and rot.
Properly done Professional Power Washing is a game changer for revitalizing exteriors and prolonging lifespan.
While limited light-duty DIY washing can help maintain, professional washing is often essential for more extensive restoration – using the right methods, equipment and products for outstanding results without risk of damage to siding, gutters and surfaces.

professional Power Washing Water Pressure Does the Work
youtube
By adjusting to the optimum water pressure level for the task, power washers blast away dirt, mold, mildew, pollen and other contaminants – often more thoroughly than by hand, restoring surfaces to like-new condition.
Effective on many exterior surfaces including:
Siding – vinyl, wood, fiber cement
Gutters & drain pipes
Windows & screens
Patios – concrete, stone, block
Fences & decks – wood, composite
Driveways & sidewalks
Power washing rejuvenates the curb appeal of your home while removing mold threats to home integrity and family health.
Chemicals Boost Removing Tough Stains
In addition to water pressure adjustment, mixing in some appropriate chemical cleaners into the spray further boosts effectiveness on more stubborn stains without risk to outdoor building materials or nearby landscaping.
Properly balancing cleaning agents like:
Detergents
Degreasers
Brighteners
Mildew removers
Produces Professional Power Washing Level Results
This combination of pressurized water and cleaning agents allows the most thorough cleaning possible. The high-impact spray reaches deep into crevices to remove soils that a brush simply can't touch – yielding professional-level sparkling results on par with a fresh paint job at a fraction of the cost.
Plus, property power washing extends the life of outdoor surfaces by removing damaging mold, mildew and organic buildup. Preventing deterioration protects home value by reducing costly repairs or replacements later.
However, to achieve the best results safely without risk of damage requires following essential methods….
Get the Most From Professional Power Washing By Hiring a Pro
Beyond having the experience, tools and products, professionals are simply in the best position to deliver outstanding power washing safely. Homeowners attempting DIY power washing risk three key pitfalls:
1. Inadequate Equipment
Typical consumer power washers lack the cleansing muscle professionals rely on including:
High flow pumps 5+ gallons per minute
Heating elements to maximize cleaning agents
Advanced hose/wands for applying chemicals
Water reclamation to conserve
Without these, you easily get frustrated from lacking power or control.

Types Of Bricks - Properties Of Bricks That Is Of Good Quality - UltraTech
From classic clay to sleek concrete bricks, we've got it all covered. Uncover the different types of bricks in the market and discover fascinating ways to use bricks in your future projects.
What are bricks ?
Bricks are a type of building material typically made of concrete, sand, lime, or clay. They are generally used to construct walls, pavements, and other types of architecture. Bricks can be produced in a variety of shapes and types depending on the materials used to make them and the use for which they are intended. It is because of their sturdiness, strength, and fire resistance, that they continue to be a popular building material.
Different types of bricks
Here are some of the different types of bricks :
1. Sun-dried bricks
These are made by moulding wet clay mixed with straw or other fibres and then allowing them to dry in the sun. Sun-dried bricks are not as strong and durable as fired bricks, but they are cheaper to produce and are commonly used for temporary structures.
2. Burnt clay bricks
These bricks are strong, durable, and come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colours. They are made by moulding wet clay and then firing them at high temperatures in a kiln. There are 4 different types of bricks that are classified under burnt clay bricks and they are widely used for construction purposes, especially in areas where clay is abundant. Here are a few of its different types :
1) First class bricks :
These are of high quality and are uniform in size, shape, and colour. They have sharp edges, are free from cracks and other defects, and produce a clear ringing sound when struck. First-class bricks are typically used for load-bearing structures and for exposed walls.
2) Second class bricks :
These are similar to first-class bricks but may have minor defects such as irregular shapes, sizes, or colours. They are still suitable for load-bearing walls but may not be used for exposed walls.
3) Third class bricks :
These are highly irregular in shape, size, and colour and have significant cracks, distortions, and other defects. They are not suitable for load-bearing structures and are often used for non-structural purposes such as garden walls or landscaping.
4) Fourth class bricks :
These are over-burnt or under-burnt and have poor quality. They are unsuitable for any construction purposes as they may have cracks, distortions, and other defects.
3. Fly ash bricks
These are made by mixing fly ash (a waste product from coal-fired power plants), cement, and water, and then compressing the mixture into moulds. They are a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional clay bricks and are commonly used for load-bearing structures.
4. Concrete bricks
These are made by mixing cement, sand, and water, and then pouring the mixture into moulds. They are strong, durable, and resistant to fire and weathering. These bricks are commonly used for load-bearing structures and as paving blocks.
5. Engineering bricks
These are specially designed for use in structural applications. They are made from high-quality clay that is fired at very high temperatures, making them strong, dense, and resistant to water and chemicals. Bricks of this type are commonly used in areas where the bricks are certain to l be exposed to heavy loads or where water resistance is required.
6. Calcium silicate bricks
These are made from sand and lime and are known for their strength, durability, and resistance to fire. They are lightweight and have good insulation properties, making them suitable for use in high-rise buildings or in areas where thermal insulation is important.
7. Eco bricks
These types of bricks are made from recycled materials such as plastic bottles, paper, and other waste products. They are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional bricks and are gaining popularity due to their sustainability. They are commonly used for non-structural purposes such as garden walls, landscaping, or decorative features.
How to identify bricks ?
Bricks can be identified by their size, colour, texture, and sound when tapped. Here are some steps to help you identify bricks :
1. Size :
Bricks come in various sizes, but the most common size is 8.5 inches by 4.25 inches by 2.75 inches (215 mm x 102.5 mm x 65 mm). You can measure the brick to determine its size.
2. Colour :
Bricks can have different textures depending on their intended use. Bricks used for load-bearing walls have a smooth surface and sharp edges, while bricks used for decorative purposes may have a rough texture or a pattern.
3. Texture :
Bricks can have different textures depending on their intended use. Bricks used for load-bearing walls have a smooth surface and sharp edges, while bricks used for decorative purposes may have a rough texture or a pattern.
4. Sound :
When tapped, a high-quality brick should produce a clear ringing sound. If the brick produces a dull thud, it may be low-quality or damaged.
Mistakes during brick masonry can be avoided by consulting with a professional before using bricks for any construction project. Having the right brickwork is very important for the strong walls of your home.
