“Do you believe in the existence of extraterrestrials?” // “Logically, I would have to say no.” [1x01 — pilot]
“You believe in extraterrestrials?” // “Let's just say I don't not believe. As I said, I try to stay open.” [8x14 — this is not happening]

trying out the pilot parallel 3.0mm today!
i've been doing "fake calligraphy" (using a regular sharpie or pen and manually drawing in the line variations) for a long time. it's cool to finally try a real calligraphy pen! i definitely need more practice though.

i love that this pen can also be used on its side to write really fine lines. say hi to the eels! the eels are friends :3

As an artist, I tend to draw a lot of the same things over and over again. Part of it is comfort, part of it is a weird perfectionist thing where I never feel like I am putting on paper what I see in my mind. Weird angles, issues with symmetry, trouble with shading/lighting… my weaknesses are many.
I am now trying my best to not let any of that discourage me. I sometimes use little drawing prompts (usually from my daughter) or draw random things from what I see around me. I find myself visualizing the lines but at times struggling to put them down in a way that makes sense to my eye. It’s like that scene in Amadeus about too many notes. I look at it (sometimes while I’m doing it!) and it’s got too many lines. Not really, but something just looks off. I like it, but it doesn’t wow me.
Too measured. Too precise. Too controlled. Too…
Overthought.
I’ve since turned to my heroes for inspiration. Particularly some of my favorite comic book artists that can do incredibly clean precise lines and wildly chaotic splashes with or without color.
Bill Sienkiewicz, Ashley Wood, and for this particular sketch: Jim Mahfood.
I’ve been a fan of his since I got the first Clerks comic he did. After that I found the 40oz stuff, Grrl Scouts, Voodoom and more. Watching him sketch, draw and paint is so interesting to me. The tools he uses, the movements of his hand. His lines hitting the surface without a hint of trepidation. No second-guessing, no erasing, no starting over. Get it out of you. Get it down on paper. Or in this case, card stock.
This is the first sketch in this way, hopefully I’m doing his style justice.
Carnage. By me. Pilot Parallel Pens on card stock.
