And we’re off! Today was the Puget Sound Borzoi Club’s independent speciality to start out this year’s national! I’m handling Violette this week and we started out strong winning the 9-12 month bitch class, then Pierre discovered the joys of being a lap dog, and then Violette’s little split face was charming af 😭

A Frigate at Sea, by Pierre Puget (1620–1694)
In the 17th century “frigate” was the name for full rigged ships, which were quite fast and agile. This had nothing to do with the "frigate" type of ship that we know later at the end of the 18th century and especially in the 19th century.

![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4e68fc307873bf0a0b00fa3c11448be8/f742ada7cbcf5d40-98/s540x810/951d14aa96369f5c5f0ea9d1eb4349435fe659f8.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/65a657449a918e88afdf3b7045a79319/f742ada7cbcf5d40-ee/s540x810/9a157a4f18407d96ae31ca98704a7daacde847ce.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/193d0319687336db1f7bf281c6968a58/f742ada7cbcf5d40-67/s540x810/e66e87c48f60ebaf80919fc61b724d52f7818202.jpg)

Gaston Castel house and studio, Marseille
2 impasse Croix-de-Régnier, 13001 Marseille, France
By Roger Jones, June 27, 2024
I previously wrote about a Gaston Castel-designed building in Marseille in this post.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/063b3113f47184f57522849987c203e9/d5fd70871e6d1ee9-bd/s540x810/4183d073a8042dc2bb6aef35529bd839ab347c31.jpg)
Gaston Castel, portrait by Oscar Eichacher, 1952
Gaston Castel (1886-1971) was one of the most prominent 20th-century architects in Marseille, whose works included the Opéra Municipal, Compagnie Transatlantique headquarters, the annex to the Palais de Justice, the prison at Les Baumettes, social housing ensembles, and other notable buildings and monuments. From 1909 to 1913, he studied at l’ Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris; he was the winner of the second grand prix de Rome in architecture. In 1918 Castel was named Departmental Architect of the Bouches-du-Rhône, of which Marseille is the capital, and would later be named Chief Architect for the department, a post he held until 1941.

Hotel particulier de M. Castel, a Marseille, Documents d'architecture contemporaine, n.d.
The atelier-maison, or studio and home, of an artist, had a tradition in Marseille. A notable example was that of Pierre Puget (1620-22 - 1694), at the corner of rue de Rome and rue de la Palud in 1681 (see photograph below). Built at the sharp intersection of two streets, the house-studio's situation anticipated that of Gaston Castel's much later design.

Existing buildings at the time of land purchase. Gaston Castel et les artistes, p. 43
In 1921 Castel purchased a parcel of land at the top of the present cours Franklin Roosevelt, then occupied by a beverage depot. The plot was long and irregular, at the sharp angle of two streets. Castel would treat the narrowest side of the building, at the angle of two side streets, as the principal facade, with a large bay window on the main living floor, flanked by two small oval windows. At the base of the bay window he placed a bas-relief of a woman's head, slightly inclined, surrounded by a palm. The top level was occupied by a terrace, surmounted by a pergola. Construction began in 1924.

The lowest level of the building was reserved for a garage, workspace, and archives of the architectural practice. The street level, entered from the impasse Croix-de-Régnier side, led to the principal stairway and reception area, as well as space for the printing of plans and the reprography room.
The principal floor (premier étage) contained the living quarters, with a salon and dining room occupying the narrow portion of the building. The uppermost level, lit by many windows, contained the architectural working spaces. In the 1930s, Castel would decide to add a third floor. Emmanuel Laugier, in Gaston Castel and les artistes (p. 44), describes a "harmony of proportions" of the design. [The last level of the building, the roof terrace, is a synthesis between mediterraneanism and modern style; it's impossible not to evoke here the bridges of steamships.]

This mantelpiece dates from c. mid-1930s, replacing the one in earlier photos. It was designed by Castel, and carved by Auguste Cornu (whose signature appears on the piece). The initials "C" and "D" on either side stand for "Castel" and "Duprez" (the family name of his wife Gabrielle-Eugénie Duprez). The mantel was removed after being auctioned in 1989, lost for a time, located, and finally reinstalled in 2009. Link to PDF of Castel inventory

Following Gaston Castel's death in 1971 and that of his son in 1989, the property and its contents were put up for auction. Tentative plans for restoration were put forward.
But in the end nothing materialized and the house remained in a state of abandonment for a few years until it was bought in 1993 by Mr and Mrs Gérardin, art enthusiasts, who gave the house and its interior all its luster back, thanks to an ambitious renovation program. The residence opens on the occasion of very rare days (heritage, architecture, etc.) tourisme-marseille
La Provence provided a quote by the building's buyer:
Translation: For 15 years, they undertook the work of titans, including re-purchasing furniture designed by Castel that had been dispersed. Dominique Gérardin speaks of a love "bit by bit, by transfusion," for this architect. "Many times I told myself that I wish I had known this revered man," she breathes.
