Different Italian anon, but the thing with Tuscan C is that it's pronounced like a very strong H sound, which is extra weird cuz the letter H makes no sound in Italian, normally. It sounds the way Spanish pronounce the J. We say it's "aspirato". So then people from there will say things like Hoha Hola (coca cola), and it's funny. It's also extremely contagious, I got family in Florence, you spend 3 days with them you start doing it too before you even realize.
.
#that sounds really endearing actually#answered#anonymous#this is entirely beside the point but I still feel sort of bamboozled by languages that have silent letters#or when letters have multiple pronunciations that vary wildly from word to word#and when the sound and the letter don't seem to match like how J sounds very close to H in Spanish like you mentioned#I'm generalizing a little but none of these are really a thing in Finnish#in Finnish words are pretty much always pronounced the way they are written if that makes sense#I don't know the language terminology but I think phonetic spelling is what you call it#each letter represents a specific sound and you string those together#when you hear a word you can always tell how it's written and when you read a word you know how to pronounce it#even if you're encountering the word for the first time and have no idea what it means#it's comparatively direct and predictable there's practically no need for guessing or memorizing#also the stress is always on the first syllabe and it's so subtle it might as well not be there at all#which sometimes makes spoken Finnish and Finnish accent sound kind of monotonous there isn't a lot of intonation#I was extremely confused by the concept of spelling bees as a kid#anyway long tag ramble but this stuff is just interesting to me

B4 I actually watched stories and was just reading the events on the god forsaken fandom wiki I was pronouncing emu/nene as eemu/neenee in my head… I could say “I don’t know Japanese” as a reason but English also favors the [e] pronunciation of “e” vs [i] (i.e bed vs see) in situations like this. My excuse for emu is the bird but idk what happened with nene. I think im just stupid. Muscle memory phonics failed me. Child left behind. Girl you know how words like emulsify and never/vender are pronounced.
#I was also dropping the e in kanade/kohane but I can blame French for that.#I had a whole phonics thing in the tags and then tumblr deleted the post and I’m not rewriting it so instead you’re getting the scarier fact#that teachers are no longer teaching a phonetics based approach to learning to read#and instead emphasizing the uhhh. ‘use context clues to figure out what the sentence says’ approach.#& now kids Can’t Fuckin Read. ‘why is a large population of America semi illiterate’#ask George Bush. no kid left behind is actually leaving kids behind.#oh right the reason I made this post is because I kept calling emu weemu in my head & nene neeners so now I have to fight with my brain#about pronunciation. get rid of the nicknames u are fucking up.#mine

reminder that ao guang, dragon king of the east sea, has a son and a daughter named “third kid” and “dragon girl” respectively
#for legal reasons this is a JOKE …. sorta#also this is if you accept the idea that longnü (dragon girl)’s dad is ao guang (longnü as in guanyin’s attendant/disciple)#the “bing” in ao bing is often used to replace the letter C in chinese#though it makes more sense to translate it as “three”#but your third son being named “kid C” is similarly funny#bing is 丙 from the heavenly stems (abcd would be translated into 甲乙丙丁)#ao guang what were you on. i just wanna talk#very reminiscent of li jing’s sons being “gold” “wood” and “??????” actually#and then him suddenly having a daughter in jttw whose name actually has meaning#(irl explanation is that the li brothers’ names were phonetically translated into chinese so their meanings are a little goofy)#i KNOWWW legit names like “octavian” denoting numbers exist but when i read “ao bing” and “longnü” in chinese i just giggle#anyway here is my mythology infodump for the day feel free to correct me if i got something wrong /gen#jttw#journey to the west#chinese mythology#ao guang#ao bing#longnü#should i tag lmk? ao guang is a character in lmk…..#eh whatever

Child me feeling excited:
*inhale* SQUEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAALLL!!!!!!
Adult me stimming out excitement:
squeak! ... squeak! ........squawk.... squeak >:) .......... *inhale* *voiceless squealing & bilabial fricative sounds*
#when i learnt about stimming & emotional regulation. my childhood filled with squealing & kicking my legs made sense haha#and those memories became even sweeter to me. i was stimming! i was so happy that i could not contain it! i was a kid full of autistic joy!#love how as a kid it was for stuff like sleepovers or xmas or birthdays & now it's like. i was just thinking about The Things lol#or not even that sometimes i just get that rush of elation unprompted and have to release it#i think my squealing as a kid was exclusively egressive but now i switch between ingressive & egressive for squeaks. v fun#discovering/realising/exploring new stims my beloved#i think learning all the places & manners of articulation in phonetics rly upped my vocal stim game lol#stimming

today on mara is still struggling to learn chinese very slowly in the most inefficient way: got door (门) and the plural modifier (们) mixed up and could not for the life of me figure out why 开门 meant 'open the door' until i put it into google and realized the error of my ways
#its a slow learning process but in getting there. rookie mistake i know#BUT HEY i can now read the entire sentence that contained 开门.#which in this case was '小姐你开门啊!'#i think some of my difficulty with it is that i cant sound out phonetics which was how i learned how to read english as a kid#i just gotta. memorize hanzi 👍 which is actually happening for me so yay. its just taking a million years for my fish brain#mara reads#<- technically

I always really like it when I hear someone say "scourge" and they pronounce it like skowrj or skoorj instead of skerj because there's like a 80% chance the first time they saw the word was either while reading Warriors, Redwall, or those Sonic comics and it makes me happy
#what do they call it. a readers accent? i think its wonderful#this is not facetious whatsoever the only reason i know how to pronounce it is because 1) the redwall cartoons#and 2) i had a weird interest in phonetics and etymology as a kid#that second point is how i know how to pronounce a lot of things actually. i just get curious LOL#but its so sweet i love it. skowrj is music to my ears

I have a question about Singapore: when learning how to write, do they teach you the phonetic spelling, and then move on to Chinese characters, or do they start with Chinese characters? Or something else?
OOH THATS A VERY COOL QUESTION !! :3 if we are learning actual words, they must teach both at the same time!! Since chinese characters are not entirely phonetics based, you need to know both the pronunciation and written character to read it ! that's why for younger kids they print worksheets with the phonetics above the characters, but once you get older they just give you the characters and expect you to know how to pronounce them </3
However for like absolute beginners the first thing they usually teach is the tones using the vowel sounds so u can properly use and differentiate the tones later on, so if you wanna be technical it would be some sort of phonetics first, but after that any new words are usually taught with both at the same time :3
#when i say u need to know both pronunciation and written itz cuz there are MAAAANNNY MANY words and phrases with the EXACT same tone#and pronounciation but are totally different written characters with different meanings#conversely there are characters that can change meaning based on pronounciation#like uhm 觉 :) if its pronounced jue it means like feel but if its pronounced jiao it means sleep :3#this is from a chinese kid so this is from my knowledge of how they teach young kids#idk if the people who take chinese as a third language learn any different but it should be the same!#actually correction chinese is not phonetics based but u can guess for SOME words based on prior knowledge#like 干 and 赶 have similar pronounciations but different tones#but its not always the case like 甜(tian) isnt at all 舌(she) or 甘(gan)#THIS IS A COOL QUESTION THANK YEW :33#isa rambles
