Photo
Favorite Queen or Queen-adjacent medieval woman: Philippa of Hainault
"The most gentle Queen, most liberal, and most courteous that ever was Queen in her days."
It was difficult for me to choose a favorite, but in light of my recent hyperfixations on the impact of revisionist history, Bridgerton, and the modern concepts of race and identity, I felt like she really was the only one I could choose.
Phillipa is often touted as the perfect queen, similar to how Elizabeth of York is later portrayed. We know that she came to England during a very difficult and tumultuous time where her husband Edward III was a ruler in name only.
She was a patron of the arts and clearly intelligent, advising her husband in ways they could restore order after the financial strains the country had gone through. At one point she gathered the English army to face King David II of Scotland which resulted in his capture. Phillips even had a whopping thirteen children!
All of that is well and good, but the part of her so many people focus on these days is what she looked like.
There is a description of a girl, alleged by some to be Philippa, written by Bishop Stapleton during a visit to Flanders.
"The lady whom we saw has not uncomely hair, betwixt blue-black and brown… Her face narrows between the eyes and its lower part is more narrow than her forehead. Her eyes are blackish-brown and deep. Her nose is fairly smooth and even, save that it is somewhat broad at the tip and flattened, and yet it is no snub-nose… Her lips are full, especially the lower lip… Her lower teeth project a little beyond the upper; yet this is but little seen… All her body is well set and unmaimed; and nought is amiss so far as a man may see. Moreover, she is brown of skin all over, much like her father. And she will be of the age of nine years on St. John's day next to come, as her mother said. She is neither too tall nor too short for such an age; she is of fair carriage. The damsel is well taught in all that becometh her rank and highly esteemed and well beloved by her parents and of all her meinie, in so far as we could inquire and learn the truth. In all things, she is pleasant enough, as it seems to us"
*Note that "However, "Michael Prestwich's 2005 summary translates the description of the hair as "between blonde and brown" (the original is "entre bloy et brun"); Plantagenet England, 1225–1360 Clarendon, Oxford, 2005, p.215"
Now there's a lot of debate about this description - first and foremost, if it describes her at all. Ian Mortimer believes it describes her sister, Margaret, and wrote a rather angry response to the 100 Greatest Black Britons project including her as there was no evidence she was black "despite everything we know about them, their genetic background and culture of the period".
Whether or not it was Philippa, I do find it interesting that the historians who argue it is Margaret seem to miss what I think is a fairly obvious point: no matter which girl it was, they were full-blooded sisters and likely looked alike but also their father is described as having the same skintone.
In a time of a raceblind Hamilton cast, of Bridgerton, and My Lady Jane, I do think it's important that we acknowledge the importance of race throughout history - both how things were, and how they could have been if not for prejudice. I also believe it's important that we're mindful of the fact that there's a very modern perception that associates blackness with both skintone and originating from Africa at some point in time, so there's no way European royals could possess a darker skintone. Only it's not that simple.
The truth is there are no absolutes with history, especially history this old. We were not there. We cannot unravel the code of Philippa's genetics and state for certain what was there. We don't have a photograph. We don't even have paintings.
Hell, just look to how many people today are discovering their own history is a lie after taking a DNA test. The number of affairs exposed, secret adoptions, even incest is showing to be more prevalent than we believed. That's to say nothing of the expression of genetics and how a person might not "look" like the ethnicity they genetically are.
Philippa very well could have been "brown of skin all over, much like her father", or not.
In a modern society she might have considered herself to be black, or not.
The important thing is we should not take the current context of race and ethnicity and apply it to historical figures because we know they themselves did not think in such a manner.
It's fun to think about, and the discussions it brings up are worth having, but at the end of the day it's just supposition.
#medievalwomenweek#Philippa of Hainault#went on a tiny tangent#but I find it so fascinating how historians respond to the description

IN A MINUTE:
A HELLSCAPE EXPRESS…
“RESCISSION” is the latest single from @codespeaker’s forthcoming LP titled ‘Scavenger’ (11/8 @weareripcord) & it finds the Edinburgh-based quintet waxing upon “brinksmanship & God complexes” across a sub-6 min slice of colossally sludge’d DoomMetal.
“INCARNATE” is the first taste of @ghostsmokerband’s forthcoming debut LP titled ‘Inertia Cult’ (3/21 @artascatharsis) & it finds the Melbourne-based quartet of Ben Astbury (guitar), Nathan Brunning (lyrics/vocals), Brayden Becher (drums) & Rhys Brennan (bass) stuck “in a loop of despair” across 7 ½ doomily blackened & post_metaled minutes.
@ingrownidaho are here w/ a brand-new standalone single titled “ENEMY” (@closedcasketactivities) & it finds the zero-fucks-given Boise-based trio maintaining their individuality/integrity while pummeling your sorry ass across a sub-2 min slice of metallically menaced, gutturally chugged & nastily riffed hXc.
“ACCURSED MURMUR” is the lead single from @nekus_necromancy.death’s forthcoming album titled ‘Death Apophenia’ (11/15 @sentientruin) & it finds the German (underworld lurking) quartet embracing the sprawl while properly death_dooming across 7 ½ mins of atmospherically blackened Metal.
“WAKE UP SCREAMING” is the opening/title-track from @privatehellva’s recently released EP & it finds the Richmond-based trio of Sam Roberts (drums), Mikey Kent (guitar/vocals) & Erik Phillips (bass/vocals) thrashing across 1 ½ raw nerved, righteously riffed & crust_metaled minutes.

happy 62nd birthday to a movie that brought to life the ethereal magic only found bound within the pages of a book: walt disney’s sleeping beauty (1959).
there’s a reason the walt disney company bled themselves dry to create the movie, and it’s evident in the gorgeous forestscapes by eyvind earle, the very detailed and stylistic animation that is simultaneously medieval in design but modern in its lush and vibrant coloring, the adaptation of tchaikovsky’s ballet by george bruns that never disappears into the background or overpowers the movie, but is a character in and of itself, and the voice talents of mary costa with her angelic singing, the commanding presence of eleanor audley, and the individualistic and comedic performances of verna felton, barbara jo allen, and barbara luddy.
the film is operatic, it’s sweeping, it’s elegant, it’s opulent, and it’s regal like the princess herself. it is, quite simply, an art piece in motion.
watching it is like being aurora and phillip waltzing atop a fluffy pastel cloud within the pages of a golden storybook, like being whisked away to the bygone once upon a time, a time that may or may not have existed... perhaps only once upon a dream.

Remembering Sleeping Beauty is a lot of fun from many variants of the fairytale story. From Brothers Grimm to Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky’s Ballet, the one about Talia is very different but dark. While the other is only for a wicked fairy that puts a curse on the Princess. The good fairies puts them all to sleep and puts a forest around for protection. While the Disney 1959 classic version and the 2014 version with Angelina Jolie was similar and different, it had some separate elements of the story. Of course, the animated version is where Maleficent was evil and cruel. What makes Maleficent the mistress of all evil, is that she has the ability to turn into a freakin dragon. The action where Prince Phillip fought with the aid of good fairies packs in a fitting music composed by George Bruns inside. With dazzling swordplay, gothic scenery, and good triumphing over evil. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cie5r81uM-c/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

WILL POPULIST UNDERDOG MARINE LE PEN COME OUT VICTORIOUS?
Right winged French populist leader Marine Le Pen is currently running for President in France. She is running against current president Emmanuel Macron as the front runner. Le Pen has held many former roles previously. She is a French lawyer, been a member of the National Assembly, ,been regional councilor of the FN, and apart of the Parliament. Her father, Jean-Marine Le Pen founded the political party, The National Front. Marine Le Pen has taken some steps in her fathers footsteps by taking over the party. However, she has considered changing the name to the National Rally due to her wanting to separate herself from her father. Le Pen ran in the last election and lost, coming in third place.
Since that election, she has created a new strategy to gain the trust of the people. Le Pen wants to soften and “de-demonize” the image of the National Front. Due to her father, the party has been associated with “far right nationalism, xenophobia, and anti-semitism”. Le Pen does not want to be associated with the hate her father brought. She has since expelled her father for his comments on the holocaust. She has also been more supportive of feminist issues, LGBTQ+ issues, dropped the opposition of dual citizenship, and more semi-progressive ideologies, which her father would not approve of. This has heavily helped her popularity. She is extremely popular for her party, winning the most percentage in the history of her party.
Marine Le Pen has a “Le Pen effect” when it comes to her populist ideology. Cas Mudde and Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser describe this as a difficulty “to establish whether support is based on loyalty to the party, support for the program or a charismatic bond with the leader” (Mudde & Kaltwasser, 67). Mudd and Kaltwasser describe how Le Pen has a “strong coterie charisma” because she “single-handedly kept an extremely heterogeneous coalition of far right groups together” (68). Recently, Le Pen has attempted to become more charismatic and less intense. Nineteen year old student Yohan Brun says “she has softened, she is more composed, calmer, more serene” because “she cares more about the French people that other candidates”. New York Times writers Normitsu Onoshi and Constant Meheut says she has, “abandoned certain ideas that had alienated mainstream voters” which Lawmaker of Emmanuels party Pierre Person says makes her “seem even more sympathetic than Emmanuel Macron”.
Le Pen is appealing to the people by learning what they want in a more approachable way, especially with the working class. She has also shown sympathy towards refugees fleeing Ukraine. In the past, it was very out of character for Le Pen to show sympathy to refugees. She is still strict against Muslim immigrants and Musilms in general but she seems to attempt to show that she is less Islamophobic than she used to be. Phillip Oliver, special advisor to Le Pen and also her brother-in law says she used to be seen as “aggressive” and “not very human”. She wasn't charismatic which did not help people trust her. She didn't talk about her family, especially her father because she was embarrassed of his past behavior. Now, she takes accountability and shows people why she is different. She's since done interviews showing off her friends and pets, been on entertainment shows and has shown lots of her personality. People began to like her which made her a stronger populist leader. However, her core political issues that she has previously fought for have not changed. The major issue she focuses on is immigration. She says that the French people want to preserve the French culture, so that's what she'll work for. She also publicly talks against the elite. In a press conference Le Pen says, “Dear patriotic friends, we need to continue to fight hard locally so that next December the [elites] caste will be severely punished. The illegitimacy of the elites becomes more and more visible every day. If we fight with honor and perseverance against the propagandist machinery…our victory will even be greater and reach historic proportions” (Stockemer & Barisone 106). By connecting with the people and listening to what they want along with separating herself from the elite, she is creating a strong vox populi. She is showing her supporters that she is one of them.
When it comes to the media, Le Pen understands how to use it to her advantage and what language to use to build trust between her audience. Within her language, Daniel Stockemer and Mauro Barisone note that “the new FN under Marine Le Pen has become more populist in its discourse. The new leaders make reference to ‘we’ almost twice as often as the old leaders. Even more tellingly, the old leader Jean Marie Le Pen uses the personal pronoun ‘me’ in most of his press releases, whereas Marine uses ‘us’ three times more often that she uses ‘me’ “ (Stockemer & Barisone, 105). They also dive into the number of “likes” she has compared to previous contenders in her party. They say, “On looking at the number of ‘Likes’, it is also evident that Marine Le Pen’s postings are by far the most popular. As the charismatic leader, she is the face and voice of the party, as well as the personification of the FN. As such, it is her postings and articles that receive that most attention” (Stockemer & Barisone, 110). She also uses social media to her advantage, mostly using Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. She understands that to communicate with her wide audience, social media is her friend. It is a way to access a multitude of people and help create that charismatic bond that she has been trying to cultivate.
As I am currently writing this, the French citizens are voting for President. Starting as an underdog, Le Pen is surprising people. Currently, she is only down in polls by about 3%. Macron is the front runner with 27.4% and Le Pen is right under him with 24%. This election could be anyone's game, and I think people may not be prepared for a potential underdog victory from Le Pen.

SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT
“They can’t tear down my memories,” Mary Woronov says at the end of Theodore Gershuny’s cult horror film SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT (1972). It’s a fitting epitaph for a picture that moves from pedestrian thriller to unforgettable nightmare vision within the space of just 81 minutes. Jeffrey Butler (James Patterson) is trying to sell the Massachusetts mansion he inherited from his grandfather. Or is he an escaped lunatic from a nearby mental hospital? He eventually wins over the mayor’s daughter (Woronov), even as bodies start piling up. The film starts out showing its low budget and saddled with a PSYCHO gimmick, with top-billed Patrick O’Neal as Patterson’s real estate representative who gets bumped off about 20 minutes into the film. But there are little touches that suggest something deeper: John Carardine as a mute newspaper editor who communicates by ringing a bell; a murder scene that seems to be lit by a flashlight on the victim’s face. The climactic flashback that reveals the secret behind the murders is as artful as the earlier scenes are artless. It’s shot in faded sepia tone and features cameos by Warhol superstars Candy Darling, Ondine, and Jack Smith among others (Darling and Ondine are the easiest to spot; I’m not sure where Smith is). The film’s sound is terrible, with almost all the dialog post-dubbed. As a result, Woronov comes off as a sleepwalker most of the time, and Patterson had to be voiced by another actor because he died before they finished post-production work. Phillip Bruns who plays a key role in the flashbacks and is really quite good, had his narration supplied by another actor.

Day 160/365 - Sleeping Beauty
By Erdman Penner and George Bruns
After many childless years, King Stefan and Queen Leah happily welcome the birth of their daughter, the Princess Aurora. They proclaim a holiday for their subjects to pay homage to the princess, and at the gathering for her christening she is betrothed to Prince Phillip, the young son of Stefan's friend King Hubert, so that their kingdoms will always be united.
Among the guests are three fairies, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, who have come to bless the child with gifts. Flora and Fauna give their gifts of beauty and song, respectively. Before Merryweather is able to give her blessing, the evil fairy Maleficent appears, only to be told that she was not invited. Maleficent turns to leave, but when Queen Leah asks if she's offended, the evil fairy curses the princess, proclaiming that Aurora will grow in grace and beauty, but before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she will use her finger to touch the spindle of a spinning wheel and die. King Stefan and Queen Leah are horrified and beg the fairies to break the curse. Unfortunately, they are not strong enough to break it, but Merryweather uses her blessing to soften the curse so that instead of dying, Aurora will fall into a deep sleep from which she can only be awakened by true love's kiss. King Stefan, still fearful for his daughter's life, orders all spinning wheels in the kingdom to be burned. The fairies do not believe that will be enough to keep Aurora safe, and so they spirit her away to a woodcutter's cottage in the forest until the day of her sixteenth birthday.
Years later, Aurora, renamed Briar Rose, has grown into a beautiful young woman. On the day of her sixteenth birthday, the three fairies ask Rose to gather berries in the forest so they can prepare a surprise party for her. Briar Rose befriends the animals of the forest and sings them a song, Once Upon a Dream. While singing in the forest, Briar Rose attracts the attention of Prince Phillip, now a handsome young man. He races to find the owner of the beautiful voice and is instantly struck by Rose's grace and beauty. Briar Rose at first is frightened at his sudden appearance, as she is not allowed to talk to strangers, but Philip soon puts her at ease. They instantly fall in love, unaware of being promised in marriage sixteen years ago. Briar Rose asks Phillip to come to her cottage that evening and meet her family.
Meanwhile, Flora and Merryweather argue over the color of Aurora's ballgown, which attracts the attention of Maleficent's raven, revealing the location of Aurora. Back at home, Briar Rose is thrilled to tell her guardians she met a man and fell in love. The fairies finally tell Aurora the truth about her royal heritage, that she is a princess and already betrothed at birth to a prince, and tell her she must never see the man she met again. Heartbroken, she leaves the room. Meanwhile, Phillip tells his father of a peasant girl he met and wishes to marry in spite of his prearranged marriage to Princess Aurora. King Hubert fails to convince him otherwise, leaving Hubert in equal disappointment.
Later that night, the fairies take Aurora back to the castle and leave her alone in a room to wait for her birthday celebrations where she will finally get to see her parents. Maleficent then appears and magically lures Aurora away from the fairies and tricks the princess into touching the spindle of an enchanted spinning wheel. Aurora pricks her finger, completing the curse. The good fairies place Aurora on a bed in the highest tower and place a powerful spell on all the people in the kingdom, causing them to fall asleep until the spell on their princess is broken. While doing so, they overhear a conversation between King Stefan and King Hubert. From King Hubert's conversation with King Stefan, the fairies realize that Prince Phillip is the man with whom Aurora has fallen in love. They rush to find him, but he is kidnapped by Maleficent who is waiting for him at the cottage in the woods. She shows Phillip the peasant girl he fell in love with is the now-sleeping princess. She tells him she plans to keep him locked away until he's an old man on the verge of death, then release him to meet his love, who will not have aged a single day.
The fairies find and release the prince, arming him with the magical Sword of Truth and the Shield of Virtue. Maleficent tries to stop Phillip by surrounding Aurora's castle with thorns, but fails. She then transforms into a gigantic dragon. Eventually, Phillip throws the sword, blessed by the fairies' magic, directly into Maleficent's heart, causing her to fall to her death.
Phillip awakens Aurora with a kiss, breaking the spell and thereby waking everyone in the palace. The royal couple descends to the ballroom, where Aurora is happily reunited with her parents, while King Hubert is confused of how the two young royals met. Flora and Merryweather resume their argument over the color of Aurora's ball gown, magically changing it from blue to pink while the happy couple waltzes. The last color to appear is pink. Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip live happily ever after.
Favourite Songs: Once Upon A Dream (I love this and I also love the Tchaikovsky melody it’s based on), I Wonder, An Unusual Prince and Wine.
Favourite Character: Merryweather
She’s stubborn and always seems a little shortchanged, but she is the most realistic of the fairies and manages to keep Aurora pretty much safe until the whole spinning wheel incident.
