“Police arrested a Queens man wanted in a deadly 2020 stabbing after the alleged killer was caught brazenly smoking a cigarette in the subway, police said Monday.”
I can't stop thinking about this story.
There's this narrative that Criminals are just like us—maybe separated by a bad day. Man if I'm on the lam for murder, I'm not going to smoke on the subway and draw a bunch of attention to myself like that (or do something else brazen like that since I'm not smoking on the subway in the first place).
It makes me think of nudge theory and how small changes to the environment can move aggregate outcomes in big ways, maybe not everyone changes behavior but enough do to have a real effect. This guy seems to be in the bottom decile of impulse control. Do we keep nudging everyone else because we aren't going to nudge him.
Am I over indexing on this one incident? Maybe but wouldn't you know it, they caught someone else wanted in a shooting smoking on a subway train just four months ago.

"NEARLY $100 GOT BY PICKPOCKETS," Owen Sound Sun-Times. October 2, 1942. Page 10. ---- Three Purses Lifted from Spectators at Dundalk Fair ---- DUNDALK, Oct. 2 - Pickpockets operated at Dundalk Fair here this week and relieved at least three individuals of their purses containing a total of close to $100. Geo. Dunn, residing a short distance west of town, was the heaviest loser, as his purse contained $57. Joseph Watson, Swinton Park district, had $20 and $10 bills in the purse he lost, John Henry Priddle of Dundalk said the purse he lost contained between six and seven dollars. A woman jostled him, Mr. Priddle recalls, as he stood at the wicket purchasing his admission ticket to the grounds. "This warning may serve others in attendance at fairs in the province," Walter Carson, president of the local fair, stated, in expressing his regret that citizens had been mulcted of their funds.

Traveling smart in today's world
Today, more people are traveling than ever before, and total numbers are expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels this year. Traveling always involves decision-making and at least a modicum of planning. If all goes well, it can be a joyful and exhilarating experience. Unfortunately, the reality is that travel isn’t always painless. Schedules go awry; tempers flare and complications arise even…

The Case of the Anvil
You may have seen some of this content in previous posts. Please forgive any repetition. I’m starting a new project and feel I should explain myself. *** As I’ve said before, I grew up in the small Central Texas farming community of Fentress. In the 1950s and ’60s, most of the residents were old–elderly would be the polite term–but these were old. And  interesting. They sat on porches and in…

NBC Hannibal is so funny cause Chilton came to Will’s house covered in blood pissing himself and shaking like “Your boyfriend framed me! They think I’m the cannibal, but I’m a vegetarian!! Please tell them I’m not the Ripper they won’t listen to me” and Will is just calmly sitting like “damn that’s crazy, anyways I called the FBI to arrest you”

love the thing paul does where he’ll pause an otherwise innocent song to add a random and incredibly suspect stanza about a failed relationship to it and then move on as if he didn’t just say All That. like was there something you wanted to share with the class buddy?

Bookery
Jason spent a couple of months as Red Hood before being able to remember his life as a ghost, and when he did he got so many answers to his questions that it was overwhelming, he also remembered his best friend during that time: The Ghost King, or just Phantom for friends.
Phantom was apparently bored with ruling the Realms and taking care of Amity Park at the same time, he was practically an adult! He wanted to do more than just be an eternal guard!
So, after listening to his complaints over the phone (and hearing his crying over "forgetting to call" for so long), Jason considered it and offered him something: open a bakery together.
After all, despite everything Red Hood did for Crime Alley, that wasn't enough: They needed a livelihood, a place that provided food at a low price and offered some jobs where they were not discriminated against, and having a legal identity never hurt, Jason knew Danny had some contacts (not bat related) for that.
So together they founded "Bookery" a bakery run by Jason & Danny, which was quickly supported by Red Hood, and well, Danny had some Infinite funds to spend to open the place and buy everything they needed.
Everyone was admitted to Bookery (except for Ghostbusters and Batman) so it quickly became neutral ground. Jason had fun cooking and Danny had fun being free, it was just a matter of time before they fell in love or something went wrong.

People were strange like that. Steal five dollars and you were a petty thief. Steal thousands of dollars and you were either a government or a hero.

“RECORDER'S COURT DISPLAYS ACTIVITY,” Montreal Gazette. January 11, 1933. Page 6. --- Long and Varied List of Crimes Shown on Day's Proceedings ---- Pity the Recorders of the district of Montreal!
Not that they ask for it, but a summary, such as listed below, gives a small idea of the work they do and the type of people they must, by the very nature of their calling, come in contact with nearly every day of tho year.
Yesterday, before Recorders Scrapie, Thouin, Morrison, and Leblanc, accused, charged with various crimes running the whole gamut from letting their dogs run loose without a licence to vagrancy, appeared, some being convicted, others acquitted, while a few cases were postponed.
A partial list of the crimes reproached those appearing yesterday follows: vagrancy; proprietors of gaming houses; being found in gaming houses; being found in disorderly houses; selling cigarettes to minors; closing establishments after the prescribed hour; keeping an unclean bakery; keeping a dirty soft drink factory; having the awning outside a shop too low; being in charge of a horse-drawn vehicle without a licence; conducting a theatre without the required licence; conducting a game of "bagatelle"; conducting a private hospital without a licence; conducting butcher's stalls, milk stands, tobacco counters and carpentry shops without licences; having committed simple and grave assaults; creating disturbances of all sorts; conducting a store without the proper sanitary appurtenances; peddling without a licence, and, allowing dogs to go roaming about the street without having the animals provided with the licence required by law.
All this, of course, is in addition to the hundreds of traffic cases that come up each day. It is not to be wondered at, therefore, that occasionally there is congestion in the Recorder's Court and that Director Fernand Dufresne is making every effort toward the establishment of an up-to-date system whereby the Recorders will be able to get a breathing spell every once in a while.
Mention of Director Dufresne brings to mind the fact that bis untiring work to clean up the city is bearing fruit. Figures have been compiled by which it is shown that since the first day of the new year there have been 520 arrests in connection with the operation of gaming and disorderly houses. These cases are now proceeding before the court.
