Page 10. ---- Three Purses Lifted from Spectators at Dundalk Fair ---- DUNDALK, Oct. 2 - Pickpockets operated at Dundalk Fair here this week and relieved at least three individuals of their purses containing a total of close to $100. A woman jostled him, Mr. Priddle recalls, as he stood at the wicket purchasing his admission ticket to the grounds. "This warning may serve others in attendance at fairs in the province," Walter Carson, president of the local fair, stated, in expressing his regret that citizens had been mulcted of their funds.

On Friday, Ford caused quite a stir when a bee flew into his mouth and down his throat.

When the bee flew into his mouth, he was taking questions from reporters in Dundalk about the provincewide healthcare staff shortage and the possibility of privatization.

Audience members were heard expressing their concern for Ford.

Ford made light of the situation after taking a sip of water from a bottle, saying: "This is going to be played over and over again."

However, the premier's discomfort was palpable.

When a member of the audience inquired if he could continue, Ford replied: "I'm OK. It's alive and well in there."

Ford told reporters that he believes strongly in public health care, but that his administration will "get creative" in determining how it can be delivered.

When asked if Ontario is considering further privatization of the healthcare system, Ford said Friday that everything is on the table.

Ford responded that surgery at a private facility would be "100 percent" covered when asked if patients would be required to make any payments.

Sylvia Jones, the minister of health, earlier this week allayed concerns about further privatization by stating that the government is considering all options to improve the healthcare system.

This summer, several emergency rooms across the province had to close for hours or days because of a critical nurse shortage.

Ford claimed that his administration is consulting with healthcare professionals from all areas of the industry to find a solution to the staffing issue.

On Friday, the premier cited a private hernia surgery clinic that was granted a special exemption when the healthcare system went public as an illustration of how the private sector can be useful.

France Gélinas, a health critic for the NDP, criticized the notion of increased privatization.

Ford commented on the bee, who Friday stole the show: "This is a good one. I don't recall what we were discussing."

If the premier actually visited a hospital was not immediately apparent.

Later, he stated that the bee "is working hard building a hive down there."

For employers who mishandle them — or worse, propagate them — the consequences can be severe, too. … According to the ruling in a lawsuit filed by [Melanie] McGraw, the [Dundalk Fire D]epartment’s chief administrative officer, David Milliner, believed that she was affecting morale and conducted a so-called investigation. But he did so without even contacting, let alone interviewing, McGraw herself. For that matter, she was left unaware that her dismissal was even being contemplated.”

“Ontario Superior Court Justice Roger Chown, relying on the Supreme Court of Canada‘s decision in Matthews v Ocean, … found that an employer’s failure to allow an employee to respond to allegations of misconduct, even when fired without cause, can be a factor in determining whether ‘moral damages’ should be awarded. … ‘The defendants acted on unfounded, sexist allegations relating to conduct from years prior, without properly ascertaining the truth and without even asking her about the allegations. Mr. Milliner conducted an amateurish investigation. He conflated gossip with facts. Without justification, he accepted the allegations and assumed the worst of the fire department’s only two paid staff. He failed to recognize the patent gender-based discrimination directed (at Ms. McGraw),’ the judge wrote. On top of six months salary for wrongful dismissal (a modest amount given her position and income), she was awarded an additional $75,000 for moral damages, $35,000 more for gender-based discrimination and an additional $20,000 for defamation for the comments made by Milliner to city council.”

Page 4, c. 2. ---- Clarence White, who was arrested a week ago Friday as a suspect in connection with some recent Shelburne burglaries, escaped from Shelburn lock-up the same evening, turned up at his home at Dundalk, Monday night, and was brought to Shelburne by his parents and given into custody, appeared for hearing at Orangeville and was remanded until Monday of this week. On Monday, he was placed on trial, found guilty, and sentenced to three years at Kingston. This was not White’s first offence.

A sentence of three years was imposed for each offence, the terms to run concurrently. On a charge of breaking gaol, a sentence of two years was imposed, to run concurrently with the other terms. White, who created a local sensation a few years ago by scaling the wall and escaping from the Orangeville gaol yard, had three previous convictions chalked against him.

He was convict #2921 at Kingston Penitentiary, worked in the machine shop then the garage, had only three reports against him for violation of prison rules, and was released May 1935. He would be back in the penitentiary twice more in 1936 and 1940.]

Driver charged with impaired after crash in Southgate

A Dundalk man has been charged with impaired driving after a collision in Southgate sent one person to hospital early Friday evening.

Just before 7 p.m., Grey Bruce OPP were dispatched to a collision on Highway 10 near Southgate Rd. 24, where a black car that was southbound on the highway crossed the centre line and collided with a northbound grey car, police said in a news release.

The driver of the black car was not injured but the other involved driver was transported to hospital by ambulance with injuries that were not considered to be life threatening, the news release said.

The Southgate Fire Department and Dufferin County EMS assisted police at the scene.

After speaking with those involved, officers found the driver of the black car to be showing signs of impairment. The officers performed a field sobriety test at the scene, which the driver failed. He was arrested for impaired driving by drugs and was taken to the detachment for further tests, the release said.

As a result of the investigation, the 41-year-old man was charged with impaired driving, possession of methamphetamine, careless driving, and operating a vehicle without insurance.

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court in Owen Sound on Sept. 24.

“Shops Broken Into,” Shelburne Free Press & Enterprise. December 1, 1932. Page 4, c. 2. --- Different Shelburne business places have been reported as broken into during the night in the past few weeks, but last Thursday night was the cap sheaf - no less than four establishments having being entered - J. E. A. White’s, Hogg’s Service Station, T. J. O’Flynn’s, and H. Cowen’s. Money and goods were taken from the White store, and money from the service station, but no loss was reported from the other two places. Friday afternoon Provincial Officer Butler and Chief McCauley went by a home in Melanchton Township and placed Clarence White under arrest as a suspect and brought him to Shelburne and placed him in the lock-up, or rather in the cellar. They left him in his stocking feet, taking the boots with them to see if they fitted the marks in the snow at the rear of some of the entered business places. They were away longer than they had intended and when they returned the prisoner had disappeared, having squeezed himself through a pipe hole in the ceiling to a closet on the ground floor of the hall, and then made his way unobserved out of the building Monday night White went to the home of his parents in Dundalk and they promptly put him in a car and brought him to Shelburne and returned him to the authorities. He was taken to Orangeville Monday night.

Page 7, c. 3. --- Clarence White, a Dundalk young man, formerly a resident of Shelburne, will come before Magistrate Falconer on Monday next, Dec. 5th, for his preliminary hearing on three charges of unlawfully entering as many business places in Shelburne. White was arrested and placed in the Shelburne lock-up last week. It is said that after he was lodged in the coop, Provincial Officer Butler and Chief McCauley removed his boots to compare them with footprints in the snow leading to and from some of the places that had been entered. When the officers returned an hour later they found that the prisoner had removed a register from the ceiling of the lock-up and made his escape by squeezing through the aperture. It is reported that before leaving he fitted himself with a pair of fireman’s boots that were stored in another part of the building. White eluded the authorities until late Monday night when he was brought to town by his father who turned him over to Provincial Officer Butler. He will now be confronted with the added charge of escaping from lawful custody.
